Good Motivational Book.......2007-10-25
The concept of this book isn't new but it is well put together and definetly a good motivational book to keep your mind positive which definetly helps you achieve positive results. My friend recommended it to me and since then I have been recommending it to others as well.

Excellent!!!!.......2007-10-23
I purchased the book and the CD's together. I couldn't put the book down!Since I read it so fast, I feel the CD's are a reinforcement, plugging in the areas where the written word didn't impact me. I listen while driving, and find new things in the content all the time. What a delight to listen to. I'm finding things are coming to me,actually without that much effort on my part. I've NEVER been SO conscious in all my life! It's commanding that we live a full life in all areas, to evolve into our higher self. Definitly gives you the how and why and the ability to get into the flow and act on our instincts. I can't stop telling people about this!
This book has changed my life........2007-10-23
I've heard of this book from some friends few months ago, and I watched the first 20 minute of the Secret DVD on YouTube with them. I got so interested in this LoA, so I searched a lot of information on internet and watched many videos about it. But like many of readers here, I was very skeptical about this and it is just so commercial and I didn't believe in the LoA.
For the last few months while I didn't believe in the LoA, my life was suffering so much from depression and loneliness that come from being in a foreign country by myself. I desperately wanted to find way to change my life. Nothing ever worked. Then I came back to have interest in the Secret. I began to read this book from the bookshop nearby and then after I started to read this book, so much hope and belief came within me. I've never thought of buying this book, coz I thought that all this book was saying is that "Visualize what you want and you will have them." I was like how is it even possible? What kinda rubbish is that?
But as my last hope to desperately wanting to change my life, I purchased this book few days ago, and am determined to make this LoA work for me. And although I haven't manifested anything very amazing yet, a lot of changes are occuring within me. I realized how important it is to keep out my negative feelings and thoughts, and forcus on good things in my life and think about what I really want and feel good about it. As I try to really practice it, I have been monitoring most of my thoughts, and within these few days already my interpersonal relationships are improving and I don't feel that desperate loneliness and depression anymore.
I believe in the LoA, and I made my mindmovie and am watching twice everyday. For those who think this book is all rubbish, I recommend that maybe you should at least try this first, and then if it doesn't work for you, then complain. I don't think there is anything to really lose by applying what this book is teaching into real life. So what is the point of blaming this book and the author even before you really practice it?
Anyway, although the amazing magic this book is showing us doesn't manifest to us, it surely changed most of my negative thinking pattern and feelings, and even only for that, this money I invested for this book is so much worth it. I've read tons of self-help books and none of those books were anyway near to this book in changing my thinking patterns.

Ex-military cop Jack Reacher is the perfect antihero--tough as nails, but with a brain and a conscience to match. He's able to see what most miss and is willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done. Each book in Lee Child's smart, addictive series (The New York Times has referred to it as "pure escapist gold") follows the wandering warrior on a new adventure, making it easy to start with any book, including his latest gem, Bad Luck and Trouble. However, be forewarned...once you meet Jack Reacher, you'll be hooked, so be prepared to stock up on the series. --Daphne Durham

A Note from Lee Child
Two years ago I was on a book tour, promoting that year's new Jack Reacher novel, One Shot. One particular night, the event was held in a small town outside of Chicago. The date was June 21st. As I was giving my talk and answering questions and signing books, that date was nagging away at the back of my mind. I knew it had some significance. I started panicking--had I forgotten my anniversary? No, that's in August. My wife's birthday? No, that's in January. My own birthday? No, that's in October.
Then suddenly I remembered--it was ten years to the day since I had been fired from my previous job. That was why and how I had become a writer. That night in Illinois was a ten-year anniversary of a different sort, somewhat bittersweet.
And ten is a nice round number. So I started thinking about my old colleagues. My workmates, my buddies. We had been through a lot together. I started to wonder where they all were now. What were they doing? Were they doing well, or struggling? Were they happy? What did they look like now? Pretty soon I was into full-on nostalgia mode. Ten-year anniversaries can do that to a person. I think we all share those kind of feelings, about high school, or college, or old jobs we've quit, or old towns we've moved away from.
So I decided to make this year's Jack Reacher book about a reunion. I decided to throw him back among a bunch of old colleagues that he hadn't seen for ten years, people that he loved fiercely and respected deeply. Regular Reacher readers will know that he's a pretty self-confident guy, but I wanted him to wobble just a little this time, to compare his choices with theirs, to measure himself against them.
The renewed get-together isn't Reacher's own choice, though. And it's not a standard-issue reunion, either. Something very bad has happened, and one of his old team-members from the army contacts him, by an ingenious method (it's hard to track Reacher down). She gives him the bad news, and asks him to do something about it. He says, "Of course I'll do something about it."
"No," his friend says. "I mean, I want you to put the old unit back together."
It's an irresistible invitation. Wouldn't we all like to do that, sometimes? --Lee Child
Secrets of the Series: A Q&A with Lee Child
Q: Why do you think readers keep coming back to your novels?
A: Two words: Jack Reacher. Reacher is a drifter and a loner with a strong sense of justice. He shows up, he acts, he moves on. He's the type of hero who has a long literary history. Robin Hood, the Lone Ranger, Aragorn from The Lord of the Rings, Jack Reacher--they're all part of the same heroic family. Reacher just ratchets it up a notch. Maybe more than a notch. Why is he so appealing? Most often people say to me it's his sense of justice; he will do the right thing. Even though there is no reward in it for him, even though there is often a high cost to be paid by him, he will always try to do the right thing and people find that reassuring in today's world when not too many people are doing the right thing.
Q: Jack Reacher gets compared to James Bond, Jack Bauer and Jason Bourne, each of whom now has a "face." In a movie, which actor do you think could fill Reacher's shoes?
A: That's the toughest question. The thing about Reacher is he's huge; he's 6'5" tall and about 250 pounds. There aren't any actors that size--actors tend to be small. So we aren't going to find a physical facsimile for Reacher because there aren't any. We have to find someone who is capable of looking big on the screen. Many people have said to me a young Clint Eastwood would have been perfect--we need someone like that who has the vibe of a big intimidating man. Hopefully there will be somebody available like that. It's also a question of finding somebody ready to sign up for more than one movie. They want to make a franchise, minimum of three, and that makes it a little bit harder.
Q: What research is involved in writing one of your stories?
A: My research is all kind of backwards. I don't go to the public library for three months and take notes in advance; instead my best research is by remembering and adapting. I read, travel, and talk to people just for the fun of it, filing away these interesting little snippets to the back of my mind and eventually they float to the surface and get used. The problem is, I approach writing the book with the same excitement and impatience that I hope the reader is going to feel about reading it. But even so, I need a certain measure of technical intrigue in the story. There is specific research I have to do as I go along, anything that's a small detail; a car, a gun, a type of bullet. I will check that out at the time. But, that's what I call the detail--the broad stuff is the stuff I already know.

Book Description
From a helicopter high above the empty California desert, a man is sent free-falling into the night…. In Chicago, a woman learns that an elite team of ex–army investigators is being hunted down one by one.... And on the streets of Portland, Jack Reacher—soldier, cop, hero—is pulled out of his wandering life by a code that few other people could understand. From the first shocking scenes in Lee Child’s explosive new novel, Jack Reacher is plunged like a knife into the heart of a conspiracy that is killing old friends…and is on its way to something even worse.
A decade postmilitary, Reacher has an ATM card and the clothes on his back—no phone, no ties, and no address. But now a woman from his old unit has done the impossible. From Chicago, Frances Neagley finds Reacher, using a signal only the eight members of their elite team of army investigators would know. She tells him a terrifying story—about the brutal death of a man they both served with. Soon Reacher is reuniting with the survivors of his old team, scrambling to raise the living, bury the dead, and connect the dots in a mystery that is growing darker by the day. The deeper they dig, the more they don’t know: about two other comrades who have suddenly gone missing—and a trail that leads into the neon of Vegas and the darkness of international terrorism.
For now, Reacher can only react. To every sound. Every suspicion. Every scent and every moment. Then Reacher will trust the people he once trusted with his life—and take this thing all the way to the end. Because in a world of bad luck and trouble, when someone targets Jack Reacher and his team, they’d better be ready for what comes right back at them…

Bad Luck and Trouble.......2007-10-19
Jack Reacher is allmost invisible, when someone deposites money in his bank account. Reacher relises its a disstress code, and soon Reacher is off. One of the Special Investigators has been killed, and now Reacher is going to work with a team, and kill every one who went against them.
Bad luck for the reader.......2007-10-16
This was my first (and last) Jack Reacher story. The guy is an arrested adolescent, with 1960's ideas about living a life unencumbered by possessions, taking idiotic chances in implausible situations. He leads a band of cohorts who are said to be the best and brightest, but who show total devotion to their leader, the dimmest of losers.
The narrative is divided into short chapters, each meant to leave the reader panting to find out what happens next. What does happen next is another tedious description of Los Angeles traffic and highways: much of it has all the excitement of your car's GPS guidance system.
When we get to the action parts, we descend to cartoon adventure. For example, a secure, fortress-like installation is built with fences low enough and close enough that the hero can assault it with homemade Molotov cocktails.
This is the sort of book we end up reading while waiting for Nelson DeMille to produce more of the real thing.
An Open Letter To Lee Child.......2007-10-16
First of all, presuming of course that you are reading this Mr. Child, let me start by saying that I loved this book more than any other Reacher novel yet, which is saying a lot. Something about the build up, the foot work, the set up for the final few chapters---it really and truly worked. But want to know why I really liked it?
Because FINALLY, the punishment fit the crime.
And this is a lament I've had with a few of your other novels (most notably Die Trying and The Hard Way). When the bad guy finally goes down, it's not nearly satisfying enough. The villains you create are so truly despicable, so awful and vile, that the reader WANTS to see them pay. We WANT repercussion to be SIGNIFICANT. Yet too many times the punishment passes by in the blink of an eye, when it should be the crowning point of the book instead. It's something we want to SAVOR!
And that's why this book is different. The ending was stupendous! All that pent up anger and frustration I felt was appropriately relieved. Please keep this up. I've almost put your books away for good, several times, after being let down by your endings (especially after such FABULOUS beginnings and middles!). This, however, was a much needed step in the right direction.
Thank you!
My First Reacher Novel, Probably My Last.......2007-10-06
I picked up Bad Luck and Trouble because it sounded like an interesting book. I must say, though, that it was not my cup of tea. I, on the whole, enjoy crime novels and spy thrillers in the vein of Vince Flynn and David Baldacci. Lee Child most likely fits here nicely.
The story is about Jack Reacher, a former military policeman. He receives a call for help from one of his former teammates. It seems that several members of the unit have disappeared and Reacher needs to find out why. Interesting premise, but it quickly devolves into a revenge novel with a little bit of "let's stop the terrorist" thrown in to make the story timely.
I have no problem with the writing of the book. Mr. Child is a very talented writer. I just did not enjoy the story. Revenge for the sake of revenge is not my idea of a good time.
disappointing.......2007-09-27
Unfortunately, in my opinion, this book cannot be compared the The Hard Way. That one was taut, thrilling and extremely gripping. This one was drowning in minutiae, far too many 'filler' details. It took 250 pages to even know what the characters were trying to stop. From then on, you just knew Reacher would get the bad guys and the climax was pretty standard 'shoot 'em up', no surprises or twists at all. I expected so much more. Pass this one by.

If there's anyone qualified to write a self-help book on success, it's Jack Canfield, who's worked his way from scraping by as a teacher to holding a Guinness world record for having seven books simultaneously on The New York Times® Best Sellers list.
As a coauthor of the Chicken Soup for the Soul® series, he's sold more than 80 million books, and now lives "in a beautiful California estate" with his days of dining on spaghetti and tomato paste long behind him. "All you have to do is decide what it is you want, believe you deserve it, and practice the principles in this book," he says, and success is yours.
His advice is straightforward (examples: "reject rejection" and "surround yourself with successful people"), but rather derivative, with quotes from the likes of JFK, Colin Powell, Aldous Huxley, and fellow motivation author Napoleon Hill.Canfield's definition of success is primarily monetary, and he includes plenty of anecdotes depicting average folks who saved themselves from the brink of bankruptcy after following his principles. He could tone down the braggadocio; readers don't need to know that he's stayed in resorts in Hawaii, Italy, Australia, and Morocco. Despite those gripes, his cheerleader-caliber enthusiasm should benefit anyone looking to improve their lot in life. --Erica Jorgensen

Excellent.......2007-10-19
This book is awesome. I wasn't expecting it to be this good and I haven't been able to put it down. I've read hundreds of these types of books and this one is definitely in my top 10. I bought a copy for a family member and it has changed her life.
Fantastic Book!.......2007-10-18
This book is just fantastic. It gives you the steps you need to take and the mindset to accomplish any goals in life.
I have already purchased 4 copies as gifts to friends and family!
A Landmark.......2007-10-11
This is the thickest self help book I ever read, 435 pages of content. However, it's a real page turner. I finished it within two days and learned a lot. I like the detailed breakdown (64 principles/chapters), the good stories and quotes supporting each principle, and the excellent writing skill of the author. It's no exaggeration to describe this as the shortcut/summary/spirit of the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series. I had read over 50 self help books and I seldom rate one five star. But this book and the book Understanding: Train of Thought, are the only two that deserve it.
Apply Jack's Principles to Your Presentations.......2007-10-08
Jack emphasizes the point that the human brain only understands pictures and positive statements. I was excited to read this because that is what I coach my clients to do--create pictures of what you want your audiences to do and get away from dry statistics and graphs and tables on slide after slide. When you generate a visual in the minds of your audiences, they will remember you and your message. And that will go a long way towards achieveing the success you are reading this book for.
Are you ready to change your life?.......2007-10-05
Then get this book. This book is a big book, and worth the read. In my opinion, it's the bible for success. I believe in it so much, I now follow Jack's format to coach my clients because it's logical and concise. If you want success in your personal growth, then read the book, and after you have finished, reread it. Good luck in your journey!

Good book, it fills some gaps for me, setting goals for example I never knew the detail that was required. At $11.oo worth it!
Excellent read - with great explanations..........2007-10-13
If you are new to life planning, dont miss this book. I had done over 80% of the things indicated in the book, yet I found the book very enjoyable.
The thing I liked most was that the book lets you interact with it. There is plenty of space for you to do the exercises and write down your answers. Dont worry about right or wrong.
If you are serious about making the book work for you, you must follow the instructions. After reading the book, skim through it again; if your handwriting does not show on at least 30% of the pages, you have not done what you were supposed to do. In that case you will derive only a fraction of the true benefits it has to offer.
Learn, enjoy, and succeed - who knows what you will be in the next

I have not completed the book yet but what I have read so far has been excellent and I have put into practice the ideas presented. I especially like the interactive study questions in each chapter. I would highly recommend this book for everyone who has their own business or is thinking about starting their own business
Great book for entrepreneurs.......2007-08-09
The creators of the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series, Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen, have teamed up with top performance coach Les Hewitt to create The Power of Focus, a step-by-step guide to making your dreams become reality and creating the life you want.
In order to get the most out of the information in this book, one must first realize this: "Success takes effort and consistent, focused activity." (quoted directly from the book)
In a nutshell, that's essentially what the book is all about, and it is only worth reading if one understands and agrees with that statement and is willing to put it into action. The "Power of Focus" is not something to just read and then think about; it is a set of instructions for doing the things necessary to achieve your goals
Each chapter describes specific strategies and techniques, and includes motivating stories about real people who have implemented and succeeded with those techniques. At the end of the chapter is a set of Action Steps, which condenses the strategies into an easy-to-follow instructional format. In addition to a well laid action plan for success, the book also provides loads of suggestions for additional reading to help keep one motivated and continuously learning. All in all, "The Power of Focus" is easy to read and understand, and is quite motivational as well.
While the book seems to be geared toward self-starters, business owners, entrepreneurs and the like, there is something of value in it for everyone. Most, if not all, of the techniques described in this book could be used with respect to any goal, be it business, financial, or personal. For someone who is stuck in any aspect of life and not sure how to effect change, reading and implementing the techniques defined in "The Power of Focus" could definitely help.

If you judge books by their covers, Jack Welch's Winning certainly grabs your attention. Testimonials on the back come from none other than Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, Rudy Giuliani, and Tom Brokaw, and other praise comes from Fortune, Business Week, and Financial Times. As the legendary retired CEO of General Electric, Welch has won many friends and admirers in high places. In this latest book, he strives to show why. Winning describes the management wisdom that Welch built up through four and a half decades of work at GE, as he transformed the industrial giant from a sleepy "Old Economy" company with a market capitalization of $4 billion to a dynamic new one worth nearly half a trillion dollars.
Welch's first book, Jack: Straight from the Gut, was structured more as a conventional CEO memoir, with stories of early career adventures, deals won and lost, boardroom encounters, and Welch's process and philosophy that helped propel his success as a manager. In Winning, Welch focuses on his actual management techniques. He starts with an overview of cultural values such as candor, differentiation among employees, and inclusion of all voices in decision-making. In the second section he covers issues around one's own company or organization: the importance of hiring, firing, the people management in between, and a few other juicy topics like crisis management. From there, Welch moves into a discussion of competition, and the external factors that can influence a company's success: strategy, budgeting, and mergers and acquisitions. Welch takes a more personal turn later with a focus on individual career issues--how to find the right job, get promoted, and deal with a bad boss--and then a final section on what he calls "Tying Up Loose Ends." Those interested in the human side of great leaders will find this last section especially appealing. In it, Welch answers the most interesting questions that he's received in the last several years while traveling the globe addressing audiences of executives and business-school students. Perhaps the funniest question in this section comes at the very end, posed originally by a businessman in Frankfurt, who queried Welch on whether he thought he'd go to heaven (we won't give away the ending).
While different from the steadier stream of war stories and real-life examples of Welch's first book, Winning is a very worthwhile addition to any management bookshelf. It's not often that a CEO described as the century's best retires, and then chooses to expound on such a wide range of management topics. Also, aside from the commentary on always-relevant issues like employee performance reviews and quality control, Welch suffuses this book with his pugnacious spirit. The Massachusetts native who fought his way to the top of the world's most valuable company was in many ways the embodiment of "Winning," and this spirit alone will provide readers an enjoyable read. --Peter Han

The next section of the book is about managing your career—from finding the right job to achieving work-life balance.
Welch's optimistic, no excuses, get-it-done mind-set is riveting. Packed with personal anecdotes and written in Jack's distinctive no b.s. voice, Winning offers deep insights, original thinking, and solutions to nuts-and-bolts problems that will change the way people think about work.

The second section looks outside, at the competition, with chapters on strategy, mergers, and Six Sigma, to name just three. The next section of the book is about managing your career -- from finding the right job to achieving work-life balance.
Welch's optimistic, no excuses, get-it-done mind-set is riveting. Packed with personal anecdotes and written in Jack's distinctive no b.s. voice,
Winning offers deep insights, original thinking, and solutions to nuts-and-bolts problems that will change the way people think about work.

Winning = Winner.......2007-10-17
Not only do I think every person with any form of staff management in their job makeup should read this book... I also think anyone who works with anyone else (yes I mean you & him & all of them) should read the chapter on candor. Brilliant stuff.

Disappointed in the end.......2007-10-10
Excellent book until I finished the work-life balance chapter... Please correct me if I am wrong, but what I read was, it is okay to lie to your people or trick them into coming to work for you... and that everyone knows company literature is not based on real culture, facts and beliefs...
Winning Recipe.......2007-09-16
Jack Welch gives a comprehensive guide to winning in business. He provides practical advice on a broad array of topics to include: Leadership, people management, change management, setting strategy, crisis management, and budgeting. He gets personal too, giving tips on how to find the right job and how to find the proper work life balance.
Jack's approach to budgeting is enlightening. He advocates setting targets, but compensating based on performance against last year and against the competition. This ensures energy is not wasted on efforts to come up with magic numbers and playing the common budgeting games. Rather, the focus is on finding opportunities for growth and eliminating obstacles. Wouldn't it be nice if your company followed a similar process?
There is much to learn in this one.

Guru to the MBAs, false prophet to the working grunt.......2007-09-16
He has his bits of general good advise, but nothing really wildly new except his enthusiam in regurgitating it. However, many of his philosophies seem like simplitic generalizations from the executive 30,000ft level. It's easy to come off like a fearless leader, full of direction, when it's other 'human resources' below you're squeezing like lemons for the needed juice of 'change', 'cost reductions', etc. He doesn't get into details of actually getting it done too much, which is typical of these high-power executive types. Doesn't sound like somebody who's really acquainted with the bloody, dirty nuts-and-bolts details of the low-level grunt world. His piece on dealing with Communist China is exemplary of this: why, we'll just re-invent ourselves perpetually to always be ahead of them... right! His point of view is that of Julius Cesar high up in his emperor's stand, whereas life looks a lot different if you're one of the gladiators or christians down in the sand waiting for his thumb signal!

Easy to understand.......2006-02-25
This text book is very self-explanatory. Makes learning the information easy and helpful. All books should be written like this one.
Food & Beverage Cost Control.......2002-06-12
As a culinary educator, I find this book both informative and user-friendly. The Excel spreadsheets and "Fun on the Web" exercises add interesting and useful technological components. The text gets to the point on all issues without belaboring the theoretical aspects of food and beverage cost controls. The book covers junior and senior level concepts in a readable format suitable for freshmen and sophomores. It is a book for all levels with real life examples. I would recommend it to anyone, be it from education or industry.
An excellent edition!.......2001-06-19
This book is a must-read for any foodservice manager who is interested in an accurate, to the point, and technologically advanced review of food and beverage cost control methods. Controlling labor and food costs have never been more important than in today's environment. Those managers who master control procedures will succeed, and this book helps them to do just that.
The author's use of Excel spreadsheets really helps learning, as does the large number of realistic industry examples. Even the Internet plays a part in the book's usefulness when the authors refer readers to applicable web sites. Best of all, the concepts (especially those related to labor control) that are presented are useful to the managers I work with regardless of their culture or even the continent in which they work.
I recommend the book to all hospitality managers, and I would recommend it to any serious student of hospitality.

A scatterbrained book........2007-07-16
While I only took Texas Government as it is required to graduate, my professor required me buy this book, ostensibly as a favor to his friend, the author.
This is not a good textbook. While I did learn about Texas government, the materials for the chapters are interspersed and requires a great deal of searching to find. Additionally, much of the information presented in this book is irrelevant to the section title. In many of the sections, for example, the one in the Executive Branch chapter, attorney general section, most of the paragraph simply talks about attorney generals who have recently won elections in Texas. A more generalized overview on the Attorney General's powers and responsibilities was more lightly covered. Because of the lack of substantive material in this book, a good third of the text could be excluded and it would retain its effectiveness.
Book Description
This classic text features comprehensive guidance, combined with a user-friendly systematic presentation and numerous full color illustrations. Translated into eight languages, it is an essential textbook, an accessible reference, and a bestselling text worldwide.

Customer Reviews:
Good content, needs a better editor.......2007-10-13
The PM content in this book is really great, but I can not rate it as 5-star quality because the editor to overlooked important corrections that were needed to the the Excel formulas and examples provided, thereby lessening their effectiveness. The problems following the learning content in each chapter are challenging, but some seem to be worded in a manner that is designed to intentionally confuse or trip up the reader rather than to reinforce learning.
It was great to get the trial copies of Crystal Ball and MS Project with the book. Overall it is a good value, just be aware that some sloppy editing detracts from the quality of the book.
Lots of Detail.......2007-10-10
I ordered this book for a class and so far the material has been very comprehensive of Project Management knowledge. However, the chapters are VERY long and sometimes lead to Information Overload. Also, the included CDs do not support Office 2007 and you will need to work with the software company to get a version that is compatible. I would recommend this book, but I am only giving it 4 stars because of the two minor cons.
Just ok.......2007-06-24
I bought this text book and the PMP CD-ROM. I found out PMP CD-ROM is a lot easier to understand project managemnet framework. This text book is pretty difficult to understand.
Surprisingly Entertaining.......2007-03-28
Even though the topics are inevitably dense reads, the authors manage to entertain the reader with funny insights, jokes here and there, and a sarcastic comment or two. Too bad the whole book doesn't read like that because then I'd actually go through the whole thing for the first time in my educational life...but then again it wouldn't be a textbook...

Excellent resource for preparedness.......2007-10-01
I found this book to be extremeley helpful in its content and uses. It was the most informative book out there and was very detailed. There were many ideas presented that I hadn't even thought of, and I found that it was easily readable. I am so much more prepared in my home for any emergency and I am so much safer after reading this book. This book presents a step by step guide that saves you from hours of research and headache. I wish I had found this book sooner.
Interesting book, but unconvincing and poorly written.......2007-09-27
I hate to be too critical of this book, because I did enjoy reading it and I think it is well worth the money, but I hope Spigarelli reads the customer reviews and hires a good editor before turning out his second edition. There are many, many careless errors in the book that make me believe that some of the instructions may be just as careless. For instance, "approximate" and "proximate" are not interchangeable. The information regarding food storage, particularly the sources of information (e.g., researchers at BYU) reveal the Mormon origins of much of the information. The medical information seems to me (as a layman) to be just plain absurd. For instance, he recommends storing 200 Phenergan tablets (that's a lot of nausea), but only 100 tablets of "acetamine" (??), a couple vials of Pitocin (I suppose we'll be inducing labor at home) and 50 Valium tablets (including two vials of the stuff for injection). I could imagine going to my doctor and asking for a prescription for all those little goodies. My guess is that he'd prescribe something else for me (i.e., a good anti-psychotic). Of course, there's also a recommended arsenal of various types of guns and thousands of rounds of ammo (probably for guarding all the prescription drugs...). Nope, maybe I should be giving it two stars instead.
Great Book.......2007-09-25
I thought the book gave a lot of excellent information. I am an old Boy Scout so there is a lot of information in there. I have supplimented the book with a Survival training book that talks about plants, shelters, general survival type of information.
I liked the book.
Disorganized and unrealistic.......2007-09-01
I bought this book on the strenght of other reviews, and that was a mistake. It is disorganized and unrealistic.
Realistically speaking, we should all aim to prepare for a Katrina-type disaster: one that affects a wide region, with the severe effects of total lack of services lasting 2-4 weeks. This book wants me to prepare a year's worth of stored food. To fulfill this plan, I'd have to move to a farm so I could grow food, raise animals, and have enough room to store the amount he reccomends. It sure isn't going to work in my one-bedroom aparment.
The overall organization of the book is awful - no planning involved in the order of chapters. The first 2/3 of the book are food storage and preparation. If you really want to learn how to grow crops, raise animals, grind your own flour, make your own leather, can/pickle/smoke/preserve your own food - you're better off buying books on those specific subjects. This one goes over them in enough detail (and bad writing) to be boring, but not enough to actually teach you how. Even more ridiculous, he details so many preparations that require electricity. If we have roads and electricity and whatnto, probably I'm not living off my stored foods anyway - and how many of us can set up our own solar power grid sufficient to run the freezer, household appliances, water heater, well pump, whatever?
And then the final 1/3 glosses over preparations for a 2-4 week disaster when it should be focusing on them. If we have a Katrina-type problem, I need to be able to take care of myself until services are reasonably restored enough to either live reasonably, or get out of the area. And if the disaster affects the whole country and there is nowhere to go.... Aside from buying your own farm/ranch in the wilds, living off solar power, etc, you're out of luck.
So, long story short, if you're like me - if you want to be prepared for an act of terrorism, a flood, a fire, a hurricane or tornado, that sort of thing, buy the books below instead.

Overall Good: Beware the Dietary Advise!.......2007-08-02
Spigarelli has put together a great how-to book and I recommend it highly. Where he falls short is supporting an out-dated food pyramid. A healthy diet becomes even more important after a catastrophe.
As a master's degree candidate in nutrition, I found glaringly inaccurate statements regarding animal proteins (meat and dairy) as they relate to a "proper diet". The book has been updated since its original date of publish, but the chapters on food choices seem to have been left untouched. I recommend tweaking his recommendations away from the large amounts of animal proteins and plus up the grains/legumes/vegetables and enhance the supplementation to boost B12 and D. The Standard American Diet (SAD) is leading us to death/disease/discomfort/ailments at very young ages so why continue that diet after a crisis when you may very well have no access to medical assistance? That simply does not compute.
I shared the dietary chapters with doctors, teachers and colleagues and they reacted just as I did. "What year was THAT written?" was said quite a bit. One of the many roads that have brought us to the precipice of crisis is the misuse of land and water toward keeping animals and the pollution derived therefrom, not to mention the negative effect of animal proteins to the human body. Even after a crisis, I cannot imagine the giving of precious land and water over to livestock when crops will sustain us.
Again, this is a very good book and Spigarelli should be commended on a job well done. I would just like to stress the fact that you should inspect the food recommendations more closely as the "conventional wisdom" regarding the food pyramid over the years is off base.
