IDEO, the world's leading design firm, is the brain trust that's behind some of the more brilliant innovations of the past 20 years--from the Apple mouse, the Polaroid i-Zone instant camera, and the Palm V to the "fat" toothbrush for kids and a self-sealing water bottle for dirt bikers. Not surprisingly, companies all over the world have long wondered what they could learn from IDEO, to come up with better ideas for their own products, services, and operations. In this terrific book from IDEO general manager Tom Kelley (brother of founder David Kelley), IDEO finally delivers--but thankfully not in the step-by-step, flow-chart-filled "process speak" of most how-you-can-do-what-we-do business books. Sure, there are some good bulleted lists to be found here--such as the secrets of successful brainstorming, the qualities of "hot teams," and, toward the end, 10 key ingredients for "How to Create Great Products and Services," including "One Click Is Better Than Two" (the simpler, the better) and "Goof Proof" (no bugs).

But The Art of Innovation really teaches indirectly (not to mention enlightens and entertains) by telling great stories--mainly, of how the best ideas for creating or improving products or processes come not from laboriously organized focus groups, but from keen observations of how regular people work and play on a daily basis. On nearly every page, we learn the backstories of some now-well-established consumer goods, from recent inventions like the Palm Pilot and the in-car beverage holder to things we nearly take for granted--like Ivory soap (created when a P&G worker went to lunch without turning off his soap mixer, and returned to discover his batch overwhipped into 99.44 percent buoyancy) and Kleenex, which transcended its original purpose as a cosmetics remover when people started using the soft paper to wipe and blow their noses. Best of all, Kelley opens wide the doors to IDEO's vibrant, sometimes wacky office environment, and takes us on a vivid tour of how staffers tackle a design challenge: they start not with their ideas of what a new product should offer, but with the existing gaps of need, convenience, and pleasure with which people live on a daily basis, and that IDEO should fill. (Hence, a one-piece children's fishing rod that spares fathers the embarrassment of not knowing how to teach their kids to fish, or Crest toothpaste tubes that don't "gunk up" at the mouth.)

Granted, some of their ideas--like the crucial process of "prototyping," or incorporating dummy drafts of the actual product into the planning, to work out bugs as you go--lend themselves more easily to the making of actual things than to the more common organizational challenge of streamlining services or operations. But, if this big book of bright ideas doesn't get you thinking of how to build a better mousetrap for everything from your whole business process to your personal filing system, you probably deserve to be stuck with the mousetrap you already have. --Timothy Murphy

Book Description

IDEO, the widely admired, award-winning design and development firm that brought the world the Apple mouse, Polaroid's I-Zone instant camera, the Palm V, and hundreds of other cutting-edge products and services, reveals its secrets for fostering a culture and process of continuous innovation.

There isn't a business in America that doesn't want to be more creative in its thinking, products, and processes. At many companies, being first with a concept and first to market are critical just to survive. In The Art of Innovation, Tom Kelley, general manager of the Silicon Valley based design firm IDEO, takes readers behind the scenes of this wildly imaginative and energized company to reveal the strategies and secrets it uses to turn out hit after hit.

IDEO doesn't buy into the myth of the lone genius working away in isolation, waiting for great ideas to strike. Kelley believes everyone can be creative, and the goal at his firm is to tap into that wellspring of creativity in order to make innovation a way of life. How does it do that? IDEO fosters an atmosphere conducive to freely expressing ideas, breaking the rules, and freeing people to design their own work environments. IDEO's focus on teamwork generates countless breakthroughs, fueled by the constant give-and-take among people ready to share ideas and reap the benefits of the group process. IDEO has created an intense, quick-turnaround, brainstorm-and-build process dubbed "the Deep Dive."

In entertaining anecdotes, Kelley illustrates some of his firm's own successes (and joyful failures), as well as pioneering efforts at other leading companies. The book reveals how teams research and immerse themselves in every possible aspect of a new product or service, examining it from the perspective of clients, consumers, and other critical audiences.

Kelley takes the reader through the IDEO problem-solving method:

>Carefully observing the behavior or "anthropology" of the people who will be using a product or service

>Brainstorming with high-energy sessions focused on tangible results

>Quickly prototyping ideas and designs at every step of the way

>Cross-pollinating to find solutions from other fields

>Taking risks, and failing your way to success

>Building a "Greenhouse" for innovation

IDEO has won more awards in the last ten years than any other firm of its kind, and a full half-hour Nightline presentation of its creative process received one of the show's highest ratings. The Art of Innovation will provide business leaders with the insights and tools they need to make their companies the leading-edge, top-rated stars of their industries.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Kudos to Ideos.......2007-08-28

Excellent book with good insights. If you are in the business of innovation, this is one book that you shouldn't miss. I also recommend EIGHTSTORM: 8-Step Brainstorming for Innovative Managers.

5 out of 5 stars Innovation for All.......2007-06-29

Through anecdotes, Kelley demonstrates how stumbling blocks to innovation can be overcome. He shows an appreciation for experimentation, momentum, and embraces failure as a true path to knowing. Failed prototypes are wonderful learning tools. Kelley's perspective keeps spirits high. He leaves much of the innovative process open ended - nearly encouraging innovation on innovating.

Interestingly, Kelley notes how medicine is becoming personalized and that the future can not be perfectly predicted. Still, he says we must aim at it. This was an important nugget of wisdom for me, a research coordinator at a think-tank-like public health research group, the Healthcare Innovation and Technology lab at Columbia University. On a daily basis we deal with innovation to improve healthcare and need to effectively innovate. Given that we tread a very specific territory - health and technology - and that Kelley's book could be so useful to us, it is obvious that he really has something to offer to everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Innovation and creativity "how-to" guide.......2007-06-07

The Art of Innovation explains many of IDEO's creative techniques and in so doing paints a picture of the physical context in which all that creativity occurs, namely IDEO's office, your average geek's idea of paradise brimming with high-tech prototypes, foam cubes, "tech box" caddies with giant Post-Its and coloring pens ... and yes, it does look more like a playschool than Dilbertesque gray cubicle-land. Teamwork, friendship and a shared passion for helping clients innovate is clearly what binds people together and stimulates their creativity, while a supportive and forgiving management structure doesn't just tolerate weirdness, it actively encourages it. IDEO seems to have taken Tom Peters' advice "If you want to do weird, hire weird people" to the next level. In IDEO-land, "normal" people would probably stand out a mile.

Two creative techniques - brainstorming and prototyping - are particularly well described, in a way that encourages the reader to try something different. I've learnt some new tricks and even started applying them since reading the book.

5 out of 5 stars El arte de innovar estilo IDEO.......2007-06-01

IDEO ha hecho de la innovación un arte, el cual es un proceso sistematizado, con pasos muy definidos, congruentes y faciles de llevar por las personas que conforman dentro sus empresas los equipos de innovacion y diseño.

3 out of 5 stars Skip it and go right to 10 Faces.......2007-03-19

I recently read both this book and the Ten Faces of Innovation. My recomendation is to skip this book. It is written more like an advertisement for IDEO and was left feeling like Tom has crossed the line into arrogance. If you read it as a stand alone book there is a lot of useful information. However most of the concepts are covered in Ten Faces. If you have time read both books but if time is of the essence then jump right into the Ten Faces, you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars My kid will love it.......2007-10-25

My 4.5 yr old son loves super heroes so when I ran across this at the store I had to get it for xmas. Flipping thru it I know I'll be spending endless nights reading it to him for story time before bed.
My only hope is he doesn't get too obsessed with it.

As for accuracy I have no idea, never got into reading comics as a kid except for those in the Sunday paper.

As for graphics layout etc they are all excellent.

3 out of 5 stars limited in its bio's.......2007-09-19

Though the book is imformative, the bios are very limited. There are no scales to properly determine strength and intelligence. Also there are a lot of typos, leading me to believe that they didn't care much when they created this. If you want a short overview on marvel characters then this book is for you, otherwise don't bother.

5 out of 5 stars Tons of good information!.......2007-08-06

Great book for anyone. Being an avid marvel fan I thought I knew most everything, but I have learned a lot from this book. It is a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars The Marvel Encyclopedia.......2007-06-11

The book is well illustrated and has exhaustive description of each character of Marvel Comic Books.

3 out of 5 stars so many errors!.......2007-06-07

Like any Marvel fan I was very excited about getting my hands on this encyclopedia, only to be sorely disappointed by the amount of errors found within it's pages. Error examples include: page 46, Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, an image of Nightcrawler is found under a listing for Black Tom Cassidy. Page 212 , an image of the Shiar imperial guardsman Nightside is shown under the character listing for Nightshade. Page 171 An image of the Asgardian character Lorelei is shown under the character listing for the Savage Land mutate of the same name. These are few example of the many errors throughout the book.

If Dilbert and Tom Peters ever attended the same party, they'd probably find themselves in opposite corners. The cynical cartoon character would have a hard time in Peters's upbeat, high-energy world of "Cool-Beyond-Belief." The Brand You50 is Peters's manifesto for today's knowledge workers. It joins his Reinventing Work series, which includes The Projects50 and The Professional Service Firm50.

In The Brand You50, Peters sees a new kind of corporate citizen who believes that surviving means not blending in but standing out. He believes that "90+ percent of White Collar Jobs will be totally reinvented/reconceived in the next decade" and that job security means developing marketable skills, making yourself distinct and memorable, and developing your network ability. His list-filled prescriptions cover everything; for example, "You are Your Rolodex I: BRAND YOU IS A TEAM" (no. 22), "Consider your 'product line'" (no. 25), "Work on your Optimism" (no. 35), "Sell. SELL. SELL!!!" (no. 47). While the book is overwhelming at times--its hyperactive typography pretty much shouts at you--any baby boomer thinking about his or her career will find much to consider. --Harry C. Edwards

Book Description

Michael Goldhaber, writing in Wired, said, "If there is nothing very special about your work, no matter how hard you apply yourself you won't get noticed and that increasingly means you won't get paid much either. In times past you could be obscure yet secure -- now that's much harder."

Again: the white collar job as now configured is doomed. Soon. ("Downsizing" in the nineties will look like small change.) So what's the trick? There's only one: distinction. Or as we call it, turning yourself into a brand . . . Brand You.

A brand is nothing more than a sign of distinction. Right? Nike. Starbucks. Martha Stewart. The point (again): that's not the way we've thought about white collar workers--ourselves--over the past century. The "bureaucrat" on the finance staff is de facto faceless, plugging away, passing papers.

But now, in our view, she is born again, transformed from bureaucrat to the new star. She works in a professional service firm and works on projects that she'll be able to brag about years from now.

I call her/him the New American Professional, CEO of Me Inc. (even if Me Inc. is currently on someone's payroll) and, of course, of Brand You.

Step #1 in the model was the organization . . .a department turned into PSF 1.0.  Step #2 is the individual . . .reborn as Brand You.

In 50 essential points, Tom Peters shows how to be committed to your craft, choose the right projects, how to improve networking, why you need to think fun is cool, and why it's important to piss some people off. He will enable you to turn yourself into an important and distinctive commodity. In short, he will show you how to turn yourself into . . . Brand You.

5 out of 5 stars What's your brand?.......2007-10-21

I love this book (and the other two Reinventing Work Series books: The Project 50 and The Professional Service Firm50).

The Brand You 50 is a tiny little book that's a very quick read. It's chunked up into really short chapters. EVERY chapter has a wealth of information.

Tom Peters brings his passion and wisdom to the concept of your own personal brand. Each of us really should have our own brand. None of his ideas are hard to understand. Many require courage. Most take a real investment of your self. Isn't this what we want though? Don't we want to be / deserve to be / the very best we can be?!?

Best of the Book: Chapter 4 which includes four very practical Brand You assessment tools. I personally love the practical stuff. Give me a theory and I'm happy. Help me understand how to apply it and I'm thrilled. Let me help someone else apply it and I'm ecstastic!

Pick up a copy of The Brand You 50 today! Order it and have it sent right to you or go to your local bookseller and buy a copy. I'm a big fan of the library but you're going to want to have a copy of this one on your own bookshelf.

I hope you use The Brand You 50 to start your own Brand You. I did.

2 out of 5 stars This is not "how to" book.......2007-09-26

"Talent" by T.P. is better. This book consist of 50 main bullet points and possibly 6-700 sub bullets - all together a long list of nice things to think about but this is not a "how to" book as expected.

3 out of 5 stars BE your OWN BRAND!!!!!!!!.......2007-08-31

A lot of the advice within this book is sound: Be proactive. Sell yourself. Define yourself. Network. Take responsibility for your career success. As a junior professional, it's very important for someone like me to realise how these elements support and leverage one's actual capabilities in the workplace.

However the author seems hard pressed to develop these into 50 distinct points. It becomes repetitive, which is why I would recommend dipping into the book as opposed to reading it cover to cover.

The written style and tone becomes irritating. As other reviewers have noted, it's full of PHRASING like THIS!!!! HYPERBOLE!! INSPIRATIONAL CLICHES!! I wish instead of 5 word sentences the author had also offered more explanation and insight into the issues he raises.

4 out of 5 stars Some great ideas; in need of editing.......2007-08-28

Many, if not most, business books began their life as a set of PowerPoint charts that the creator presented to seminars, conferences and the like, and that were subsequently converted into book form. As a result, most business books are chock full of filler - anecdotes of questionable relevance, endless repetition, and other low-value material.

In contrast, "Brand You 50" eschews surplusage. It reads like a conference presentation, for better and worse. On the plus side, this book is a fast read, and it includes dozens of ideas for improving your performance, your skills and your marketability. Which ideas you choose to embrace and implement will depend on your job, your goals and your personality; this book provides a huge buffet of ideas from which to choose. "Brand You 50" has no filler at all, which I appreciated. On the minus side, the book is formatted horribly. Peters crows that he designed it himself. I appreciate the thought, but some editing of punctuation, font, and the like would have helped immensely. It literally reads like a transcript of a motivational speaker, complete with a plethora of exclamation points. Indeed, this may be the first book in the English language with more exclamation points than periods.

However, after you get past the awkward formatting, "Brand You 50" provides a wealth of practical ideas for building your personal brand. It's at least worth checking out from the library.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read, OK stuff, but not WOW!.......2007-08-09

Well, I read it in 4 hours... It's interesting, it does good to your self-esteem and contains fairly practical advice. However, I wouldn't consider it too seriously for crafting a new life course on the basis of its advice. It also needs significant updates where it refers to new media and the Internet.

5 out of 5 stars World Traveler.......2007-07-30

The book is in excellent condition and has been most helpful in planning a trip to Prague, Krakow, and Budapest. Most of the suggested middle-range hotels had already booked which is a good indication that the guide book had good selections.

5 out of 5 stars A top quality guide for business and pleasure travelers alike........2007-07-09

Eastern Europe is Lonely Planet's comprehensive travel guide compiled by thirteen authors who spent 4732 combined hours of on-the-road research, covering the nations of Albania, Belarus, Bosnia & Hercegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Ukraine. Each nation's section features maps, festivals and events, specific dangers and annoyances for travelers, a concise mini-history, recommended places to sleep, eat, and see, and much more. "Bulgarians shake their head 'yes' and nod their head 'no'... If in doubt, ask 'da ili ne?' (yes or no?)." At nearly one thousand pages in length, Eastern Europe strives to squeeze in everything a world tourist absolutely needs to know about a staggering diversity of nations, cultures, and customs, and is a top quality guide for business and pleasure travelers alike.

4 out of 5 stars USEFULL RESUME.......2007-06-08

You won't find the whole information of those countries, but it has an excelent synthesis.

I'm happy with my purchase.

5 out of 5 stars 2007 Edition: Well Updated & Comprehensive!.......2007-03-27

Not all Lonely Planet guides are equal, but I found this one to be very good!
It covers pretty much all the former socialist countries westwards from Russia, including the Baltic states, Central Europe, the Balkans, Ukraine, and even obscure, very rarely visited Belarus and Moldova.
It already has a separate country chapter for Montenegro, which only became independent in the summer of 2006!
Inside, you will find all the details that can be expected from this series: in addition to the usual background info on history and culture as well as listings of recommended sights and activities, LP does provide useful practical details like prices and contact details of accomodation options as well as fares and journey times for public transport. These seemed pretty accurate to me, though are bound to change within the lifespan of this book.
The detail provided about each country described of course can't compete with single-country guides, but is probably sufficient for most people planning to visit several countries in one trip. As a rule, there are enough places described to fill at least 2 weeks in each country. In comparision to LP's Europe on a Shoestring which covers the whole continent but goes into more detail about the more visited Western European countries, this one has about 3 times more info on Eastern European ones.
I would highly recommend this book for both those who are still in the planning stages and need info to decide which countries in the region to visit, and for actual use on the road to those planning to visit several countries on one trip.
Of course, if you only want to concentrate on 2-3 countries only, you may find individual country guides more detailed - though right now quite possibly less up to date! LP and Rough Guides both publish such guides to the more popular countries in this region, while Bradt covers even the more obscure ones like Albania, Belarus, Bosnia, Macedonia, Serbia or Slovakia as separate titles.
For the region as a whole, this book is the one to get for sure though!

4 out of 5 stars Good on average, but lacking in some respects.......2005-08-25

The guide is up to LP's usual standard, which is good, with good information regarding the backgrounds of countries, cities and regions. Also, almost every town mentioned has maps and plenty of accomodation and restaurant suggestions.

However, it is incomplete or simply incorrect in some areas:
- the costs of accomodations and places to eat are noted in euro's, and, as the exchange rates have changed since the time of writing, there are quite significant increases in costs (in euro's). This can be a setback when counting on this financially
- some maps are somewhat incorrect; I came across this twice when walking from a train station to the centre of town (real distance was much greater than the distance mentioned on the map)
- when buying train tickets in Eastern Europe, the procedure for seat reservations differs from country to country. This wasn't mentioned for instance in the case of Bulgaria: there you have to buy a train ticket AND pay for a supplement for a seat reservation (regular tickets only buy transport, no seating)
- train connections were displayed differently when comparing one country to another; in some information would be in the city chapters, in others it would be in the country directory. Also, the amount of information displayed varies greatly.
- Often people will travel to Istanbul as well as lots of countries mentioned in this guide, or maybe Greece as well (I went from Istanbul through Northern Greece to Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Hungary, Austria and Slovakia), and nothing in those countries is covered. Perhaps omitting Greece is logical, but at least a couple of pages on Istanbul (geographically in Europe) would benifit the traveller.

And, my big disagreement with practically any LP guide is that makes judgments about destinations, instead of merely describing what is there. These judgments may fall into the liking of the mainstream traveller, but are not a success for everyone.

To wrap it up: this guide is great value if you're travelling to or through Eastern Europe, but especially in the transport area: ask around and don't rely solely on this guide.

4 out of 5 stars Great Review Book.......2007-01-25

I've been using this book for the past few weeks in conjunction with the new MKSAP 14 questions. Thus far just about everything the MKSAP has tested can be found in the book. Its very easy to read, high yield and very well priced. The only complaint is the index. Like all the rest of the First Aid series, its horrible. That aside, this book is a great find.

2 out of 5 stars Excellent quick review.......2006-12-27

This is an extraordinary board preparation material as it basically includes the core of the requirements posted by ABIM. It is easy to read; with very affordable tables and images. I highly recommend it to be read through residency as it highlights important core concepts that you can go and research further for a deeper insight in other kind of textbooks or resources. Is very complementary to MKSAP and MedStudy as it let you round and define the important core material. This book provides a nice balance in terms of thoroughness, readability and ability to pinpoint to the high yield material.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful.......2006-07-22

This book contains a lot of excellent tables, algorithms and summaries that I could not find in any other review book. It seems to be a great companion while doing review questions. I also found this book to be an outstanding source when I prepared for work rounds to teach the interns and students. I can highly recommend this book to all residents. I wish I had it when I started my residency.

5 out of 5 stars Review by 3rd year resident.......2005-11-28

I've been using the First Aid for the Internal Medicine Boards to review IM material during my 3rd year, and I would say that it is very complete. It is more concise than other review books out there coming in over just 600 pages and is very much more affordable. Most review books out there cost hundreds of dollars and are just too long to read more than once. First Aid for IM review is organized by disease system and then is broken down signs/symptoms, differential, diagnosis and treatment. There are many pictures for the diseases it covers with color glossies in the back of the book. The book is full of easy to review charts and mnemonics. There are notes in the margins to highlight must memorize facts. The key to using this book is to study the charts which have high yield facts useful for answering questions and also memorizing the algorithms which can be applied to many different types of questions. When combined with the question book of your choice, First Aid for IM boards provides effective review. This book is short enough, as opposed to other review books, that it can be reviewed several times before you take the boards. When do we ever really remember anything when only reading it once? I recommend this book to anyone that wants a complete IM review in the shortest time possible with high yield facts that helps you answer more questions correctly.

4 out of 5 stars So you want to be an Internist?.......2005-10-10

Good overall general review of internal medicine. A little too basic for serious IM board review, however. Would probably be most appropriate for a busy first year resident/intern in internal medicine or family practice. Might even be just right for a bright fourth year medical student aspiring to join the ranks of IM.
I would STRONGLY recommend the Internal Medicine Medstudy books as the backbone of your review prior to taking the ABIM certifying or recertifying exam!!! The Medstudy DVDs compliment the books as well. Worked great for me. Mayo Review and MKSAP are decent, also.

5 out of 5 stars Re-imagine yourself. .......2007-09-04

Re-imagine! Can you imagine a world where things didn't change? Where you didn't have to re-invent yourself to stay in the game? Tom Peters' book "Re-imagine!" will help you look at yourself and your company in a different light. We all have to come to grips with the fact that the rules of business have changed and will continue to change. "Re-imagine!" helps you develop a mindset that engages change. If you keep doing the same things you have always done you will soon go the way of the dinosaur. Why not re-invent yourself today before someone else does it for you.
I love the attitude of the book that we must "Relish the Mess". It's time to get our hands dirty, to go out and "play" as hard as we can in order to find out just how we can "put a dent in the world". To many individuals and companies are comfortable with incremental improvement from year to year. "Re-imagine!" shows us that nothing truly remarkable comes from playing it safe and making only incremental improvements. "Re-imagine!" is about putting yourself at risk, working incredibly hard, failing fast and finding your unique way to change the world. After all, if you're not out to change the world, why bother?
Read this book! Then "Re-imagine!" yourself and your company.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have, High-Spirited Addition to your Management Books .......2007-02-02

I love Tom Peters. I love his enthusiasm, his positive outlook, and his motivating ideas on how to excel in our dynamic, ever changing workplace.

This book is pure Tom, wonderfully insightful and covering most of his current themes. Once you get into (or past) his slightly frantic magazine-like format you'll be well rewarded as he hip-hops from topic to topic covering everything White-Collar Cataclysm (and how to survive it) to bringing Weird and Wow to the workplace.

If you're going to be in the workplace for the next 10+ years, I strongly recommend you pick it up!

Some of my favorite quips from the book:

* Innovation comes from pissed off people.
* Embrace failure! We avoid failures but we must embrace it. We must glory in the murk and muss that yields true innovation.
* It's easier to kill then change. It's easier to make Walmart then change Sears.
* "Good" management was the most powerful reason that leading firms failed to stay atop their industries.
* For 2 decades we have outsourced blue-collar jobs, now comes white-collar jobs.
* Culture isn't just 1 aspect of the game - it is the game! (Lou Gerstner)
* Design is the #1 determinant on whether a product-service-experience stands out, or not.
* Engage your folks. Make things that are cool and that work. Stick your neck out.
* No body gives you power. You just take it. Obeying the rules is obeying their rules. Astonish me. Build something great. Make it immortal.
* Getting Things done is ultimately not about power or rank. It's about passion and imagination and persistence.
* Never accept an assignment as it is given. You are never so powerful as when you're "powerless".
* Every "small" project contains the DNA of the entire enterprise.
* Fail, Forward, Fast. Fail sooner, succeed sooner.
* Find Heroes. Do Demos. Tell Stories.
* Know Your Product - Have true, deep knowledge of your product.
* Success = Sales Success! Everywhere. Period. We're All in Sales. All the Time.
* Blame No One! Expect Nothing! Do Something! (NY Jets Locker Room by then-coach Bill Parcells)
* Meet the New Boss: Women Rule!
* Think Weird: The High Value-Added Bedrock
* Be Performance oriented - to a fault. Collect the Best Dammed Group Of Talent possible and then convince them to go where they never imagined they could

3 out of 5 stars a magazine book.......2007-01-28

I admire Tom Peters, but it seems like a magazine and doesn't has a clear purpose.

3 out of 5 stars Meet Tom at the Bar for best results.......2006-11-14

Tom Peters blasts into his book Re-Imagine with gusto, touting the power of pissed off people like him to change the world! However, in spewing forth his rhetoric and ideas, the medium of prose does not seem quite sufficient in bandwidth, so the book has side bars, parenthetical remarks, and jumps topics mid-sentence. For best results, bring a glass of wine to your reading chair, and don't try to drink in every word, just listen to the jist of it. You're meeting Tom Peters at the bar, so it's best to be on the same grounds as him.

5 out of 5 stars Muito Bom.......2006-11-10

O Tom Peters escreve de uma forma que torna a inovação um tema acessível a todos. O livro é muito bem formatado e graficamente atraente. Recomendo a quem busca uma leitura agradavel e atual.

5 out of 5 stars Leadership Wisdom.......2006-06-11

Tom Peters, born in 1942, is a well known American writer and expert on business management practices. His is best-known for co-authoring the classic book, "In Search of Excellence" with Robert Waterman. He is also co-authored "A Passion for Excellence" both of which are well worth reading. He is a gifted public speaker and holds scores of seminars annually as well as starring in some outstanding corporate films.

Peters is a very educated man with a Batchelor's and Masters degree in Civil Engineering and an MBA and PhD from Stanford University. He also has a wide professional and working background having served in the American Navy and worked at the Pentagon and the White House in the 1960s and early1970s. From 1974 to 1981, he worked as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company and finally set up his own consultancy practice in 1981.

"Leadership" is one of the lesser known books by Peters, although it is also packed with the wisdom that people have grown accustomed to receiving from this truly management guru. This is a delightful little book written simply in an easily understandable manner.

So, instead of attending his seminars which can cost up to USD 1000, buying and reading this book is a cost effective way of capturing the high quality advice and guidance for all those who are or aspire to leadership positions.

5 out of 5 stars Peters Does it Again.......2005-09-14

Always on top of things, Peters has definitely identified two top trends that American business seems to be ignoring. Useful, impacting information that needs to be taken seriously. And, done in a great, concise, easy-to-read format. Great little book.

5 out of 5 stars a new series by DK, purely TP.......2005-06-19

Tom Peters is my mentor, even that i have never met him, yet he is my mentor, to see life and business in a different sprakling way. So, i am biased, and i owned all of TP books, and i visited his website very often.

I belive DK and TP is a good combination. This books is so colorful it felt like a traveling guide, but this is a guide for the new Leader in the new millenium...

The size is small, in the similar way as of TP "Brand You trilogy series", but with the color of Re-Imagine. Some materials are from TP older books, and some are new. But all are wonderfully energizing and refreshing.

A lot of materials was taken from Re-Imagine, so if you only want to own ONE TP book, get Re-Imagine. ;-)

TP is a different type of writer, with followers and critics on both sides. he is not "common" or "neutral", he is an extremist, he is a player.

To attend his one day public seminar in Singapore you have to pay about 1000 USD per person. So this book (all his books!!! and get Re-Imagine if you have not got one) is a real bargain.

If you download his powerpoint files from his website www.tompeters.com, and did not understand some of the slides, you can read it in his books.

This is a small books full of RANTS, strong talks, and opinionated LISTs, combine with pictures, colors, and graphics.

I enjoyed this chrunchy delicious books very much and read it over the weekend.... I love Tom Peters!

5 out of 5 stars Why there's a Battle of the Sexes.......2007-07-16

I work in Account Planning for an ad agency and also lead a Men's Ministry for my church and I found this book extremely helpful in showing why men and women disagree on how to approach things. It's especially good when combined with David Murrow's "Why Men Don't Go To Church". When I showed a group of blue collar, non-Marketing educated, men the info in both books, I got nothing but agreement. I didn't find the info in Peters and Barletta's book stereotypical at all. I do agree that the type size could be bigger, but I didn't have a hard time reading any of it. I thought the Contrasts - which shorthand how men and women differ in thinking - was very helpful and I defy anyone to show the graph of how men shop vs. women (page 73) to either sex and not get a knowing laugh.

1 out of 5 stars Trends (Tom Peters Essentials).......2007-01-10

We have not received our Trends book which we ordered on the 19th November 2006. We expected it between 7th and 19th December but because it was around Christmas we thought the mail may be running late and left it to the new year. Now we are back from Holiday's, we have still not received the book.

Could you please look into this and get back to me ASAP.

Thank you!

I have tried to contact you, looking on your website site for an email address and could not find one, I have tried to reply to your emails that Amazon have sent me but they dont' alow me too. Could someone please look into this ASAP.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time and $$.......2006-10-10

I bought the book because I thought it would be about 'Trends' and might give guidance into products and services that could be marketed. After 10 pages I realized it was nothing of the sort. It seems to be a soap box designed to show the superiority of females in all things. I am not a chauvenist by any means, but I was offended by Martha Barletta's portrayal of men. And often her take on men vs women was just not accurate. That men care what people think of them more than women? Come on now..all her information is anecdotal - no statistics. Just ranting and denigrating men. WASTE of $$$. This booklet wouldn't have sold 100 copies if Tom Peters' - who happens to be a man -name wasn't on it.

4 out of 5 stars Trends by Tom Peters and Martha Barletta.......2006-06-19

This book was on target. Repetiveness is obviously important since it appears the top Fortune 100 still don't get the value of marketing to women, women-owned businesses and the Prime Time group. The book format afforded the reader the opportunity to creatively identify how it would respond as a consumer or a business owner (large or small). I recommend that every CEO who wants to increase its bottomline to read it over and over until their companies demonstrate this change management.

2 out of 5 stars Annoying text- impossible to read, cause serious headache.......2006-06-10

I'm not so sure of the content, beyond Peters and Barletta repeating what any trendster or most any person in business knows -- women and seniors are IT. But was impossible for me to read much of the text. I tried hard to read the black on hot pink background on one page, then black on lime green the next, and black text on deep angry red on the next. My eyes were fatigued by page 12 - seriously. I skipped to later chapters in the book, and found text in such teeny font that I was unable to read (to the publisher, should you care: examples: pp. 102-103, 132, 147 and many more.)

And Mr. Peters says seniors are the big trend? Does he know that even for the youngsters with strong eyes, this book was so impossible [for me] to read that I returned it to the bookstore same day. Seriously - headache from the strain of adjusting my eyes to the sharp colors and teeny tiny print. And I rarely have head pain. Gosh, don't buy it. Find something else that's readable, legible on trends, and needn't hide it's thin, shallow content with funky colors, many phrases with annoying ALL CAPS, and paragraphs including DIFFERENT FONT SIZES and FONTS throughout.

The worst pages were those with the ten "To-Dos" at beginning of chapters. Background was faded from sharp red to near white; couldn't read a complete sentence without eye strain. And then the "cool friends" segments ...light blue print on all black background...

If there's great content, all this cheesy, goofy, I'm-trying-to-be-so-hip-and-cool, off-putting act will be completely unnecessary.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A good source of pretty pictures for your lecture presentation...........2005-12-22

I used Wolpert's text for an undergrad developmental course. Given that the test assumes previous coursework in genetics/biochemistry, the content of the book could've been more in depth, especially in the chapters on vertebrates. Sometimes extra detail makes the big picture easier to understand; this book leaves a little too much to mystery and results in a confused reader. The glossary and index leave much to be desired. On a more positive note, the illustrations and photographs are as good as you'll find in any textbook. However, I suggest Gilbert's text.

1 out of 5 stars CAUTION: not a good intro to development.......2003-09-23

I am currently using this text for my 300 level developmental biology class. You know the saying, "a picture is worth a thousand words", well, this book is a thousand words without the pictures. It is very cumbersome to read. You know there is a problem when a book makes more sense when read in reverse. I am being very serious. FOr example, the author will be overly vague in introducing a topic, but still use specific terms without any prior introdution. Vital details necessary to understanding the text are given when needed. Throughout, terms are used before definitions are given, which makes the reader go nuts trying to figure out the meanings of more than half of the sentences.
Seriously, i do not understand the "excellent" reviews that others have given it.
I think it may be true that this book is VERY Comprehensive, but as far as clarity, theres none for students trying to understand the basics and a little more. If you are a professor, and know the material, then this book is probably a pleasure to read.
If you are like me, and just want to have a thorough understanding of the basics of developement, it would be in your best interest to look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Textbook.......2000-01-25

Wolpert's developmental biology textbook is evidently an excellent text in its field. The authors are all well recognized in thier research areas. The organization of the text is also very well written. The summary of the concept presented at the end of each chapter is helpful. The figures presented througout the text are clear and the language used to explain them is simple but very understandable. Compared with the well-known Gilbert's text, this text may be less in dept but you can get the concept from this book for only half of the time reading Gilbert's. It is a nice book to have both for the new beginner in the field and for just a quick reference.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest revolution of text in development.......1999-02-01

@I read this book for 2 months. Chapters of regeneration is more impressive than any other chapters. Moreover, I impressed that this bppk is best for beginners and students. Composition is also excellent.
