5 out of 5 stars Great book for those suffering from Paruresis.......2007-09-28

This is a great source of information for those who are afflicted with this life altering ailment. If you have paruresis buy the book. You can use it to gain knowledge about BBS, what treatments are out there, and even use it to educate your doctor about paruresis. However, you cannot rely on the author, psychiatrist Steven Soifer, for advise. He will not return E-mailed questions sent to him nor his web site. Other than that, the book is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars You are not alone.......2007-03-22

If your wondering about buying this book I recommend you do. Don't stress you can always hide it and you never know it may just help. As a sufferer it took a lot of courage to buy this book. When I read it I cryed and I now know I am not alone. It has even empowered me to seek professional help and talk about this demon to close family and friends. I know I can beat this and this book has helped me on my pathway to recovery

4 out of 5 stars A good book. Straight to the point........2007-03-13

Simply put: This book really does help those of us who suffer from this problem. Ill admit, this book didnt cure me, but then I didnt expect that anyway... What it did do, was allow me to fuction properly within the workforce, and enjoy a few drinks at the pub in the arvo.

If uve got this syndrome, give it a read, u cant go wrong.

4 out of 5 stars An important reference book.......2007-03-09

This book helped me substantially get over this secret condition. However it is not a substitute for getting to support groups and active work.
It is however the defining and original book on this topic, by educated authors who have been affected by the condition themselves.
My only criticism is that it is not totally comprehensive in the treatment side of it, if you are trying to recover on your own.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on Panic I Own.......2007-08-28

I have been plagued with panic attacks for 5 years. Despite medication and therapy, the anxiety of having another panic attack remains with me 24/7.
This book was recommended to me by my therapist, and it is truly excellent. Do not plan to breeze through it in a few evenings, though. It has questions to answer, things to ponder, and requires more involvement than "quick fix" books that you've probably already tried. You must truly commit to going through the book and doing the exercises - and making that commitment can be difficult.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever for Anxiety and Panic Disorders.......2005-11-10

It is working very well for me so far. I just recently got the book, (probably a week ago) and it has helped me significantly. I am now not experiencing any more panic attacks and I feel very good.

4 out of 5 stars A good empirically-based treatment workbook.......2002-02-24

This is a sound approach to treating panic and anxiety. The exercises are based on the clinical literature and the author's experience as a therapist. The book is in workbook format with large pages and very long lines of text across the page, which makes reading it difficult for some clients. In addition, the client has to be fairly well educated to benefit from the text. It would not be very useful to those who are not very good readers or those who have little formal education (e.g., high school dropouts with little interest in reading). Nonetheless, the ideas are useful for therapists who can incorporate them into their work without using the text per se.

5 out of 5 stars TRULY AN ACTIVE GUIDE IN OVERCOMING PANIC.......2001-09-11

I have read many books and seen many therapist over the last 8 years, and this book proves to place the reader in an active role in overcoming their anxiety. Not that other books were not helpful, but this one made the other books about anxiety all come together to reinforce what I was doing. The best advice is to have someone help you to be accountable and do what the book says because only practice will help you change.

5 out of 5 stars Real, workable solutions........2001-08-05

I've read many, many books on treating panic disorder, but this is the ONLY book that helped me overcome my panic disorder. I only wish I had read it years ago. Panic pretty much ... my life down a black hole -- I was so agoraphobic that for two years I rarely left my bedroom, even to go down the hall to the kitchen. A cognitive-behavioral therapist gave me a copy of this book and took me step by step thru it. It took 8 months of hard, scary work but today I can go anywhere, with or without anyone, and do anything, for as long as I want, whenever I want --not a medication in sight and not a twinge of inapropriate panic. Two years ago I couldn't even contemplate walking to the end of my driveway. I just can't recommend this book highly enough. It was the light at the end of my tunnel.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good but not the best.......2002-01-03

Although this book provides useful information about cognitive (thought) and relaxation strategies that help reduce anxiety, it is not the best available. A better self-help book is THE ANXIETY & PHOBIA WORKBOOK (3rd. Ed.) by Edmund Bourne. Bourne provides more detailed information about and a wider variety of relaxation techniques as well as more information about the rationale behind and research support for the techniques.

Lee J. Markowitz, Department of Psychology, University of Waterloo (Ontario, Canada)

4 out of 5 stars Noteworthy primer on addressing anxiety and phobias.......2001-05-26

This is a small book but it has all the essentials one needs to address anxiety and phobias. Babior and Goldman have done a fine job condensing necessary strategies and providing examples.

3 out of 5 stars Useful but not enough.......2001-05-17

While I liked what this book offered, it did not offer enough. I wanted something that gave me a great deal more information and insight and not just a few basics and exercises. What the authors do, however, they do well. I like how they write. After I read this book I read Diagonally Parked in a Parallel Universe which I found much more enlightening, insightful, personal and useful.

5 out of 5 stars Insurmountable Help.......2001-01-04

I read the book, and am fortunate enough to reside in the same town where Shirley Babior practices. I can't say enough about how she, and the advice in her book, have changed my life. I refer to the book very often because it is an ongoing process to overcome difficult Panic and Anxiety disorder. This book saved me from a future that was certain to be wracked with a lot of unnecessary worry, fear, phobia, and anxieties I thought would never end!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guidelines for people who suffer from phobias.......1999-08-27

It surprises me that there is such a detailed book which helps me cope with my social phobia. I feel much more confident now, after reading it. What is so special about the book is that it does not only help readers recover from fears but also help them find the root of the problem step by step. Besides, it explains clearly why people have anxiety problems. I highly recommend this book to those who find their fears very disturbing and want a complete recovery.

Book Description

In this groundbreaking book, self-help author Douglas Bloch shares his struggle with and ultimate recovery from a life-threatening depressive illness. Although the managed care mental health system failed to provide him with adequate treatment, Mr. Bloch devised a daily survival plan for living in hell which he adopted until the power of spirit, acting through a group of committed, loving people, brought about his recovery.

In addition to his compelling story, Mr. Bloch outlines a fourteen point brain maintenance programa holistic approach to the treatment of anxiety and depression that includes: diet; nutrition; exercise; stress-reduction; medication; vitamin, mineral and herbal supplements; and the importance of creating strong bonds of social support (social isolation is both a cause and consequence of depression).

The book also includes a comprehensive 130 page self-help section on treating depression, including a 10 page listing of Internet sites for on-line healing assistance.

Moreover, the narrative is complemented by paintings from historys great artists that visually depict the various states of mind that the author experienced. In receiving words and images that stimulate both sides of the brain, the reader is given a complete picture of the journey from depression to recovery.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on Depression & Anxiety.......2005-09-06

This book was very easy to read. It was helpful to know how the author felt during his depressive episodes and how he managed his symptoms. I learned a lot about the different Depressions (and its symptoms). And how to find help and support while I am battling my Major Depression and Anxiety. I feel that I am not the only one who suffers from Depression. The Depression and Anxiety rating chart is an excellent idea and it helps me track my moods on a daily basis.

5 out of 5 stars Thank God For This Book.......2005-06-13

Thank God for this book. I am going through hell with anxiety and clinical depression. This book has coping strategies. I think most readers know something about clinical depression. Yet it is the combination of clinical depression and anxiety that is so devestating. This book attacks the combination.

The hardest part is that one can't stop when in this sickness. The only solution is to keep going. Hence, the perfect title for this book which is "When Going Through Hell, Don't Stop." If one stops, then one drowns in the condition.

5 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive and compassionate.......2001-01-26

I appreciated his thoroughness. Lots of web sites to contact for all types of depression. Also a strong focus on spirituality. It gives everyday help.

5 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Resource.......2000-07-28

Since reading When Going Through Hell...Don't Stop I have put its coping strategies to use in helping a good friend recover from depression and anxiety. So far, there has been definite improvement in his depression. Everyone involved is thankful for Mr. Bloch's sound words of advice. This book has a wellspring of information to offer for anyone who is suffering from depression or their friends and caregivers.

5 out of 5 stars A powerful healing resource.......2000-01-21

When Going Through Hell...Don't Stop! is a monumental work. It offers a compelling story of one person's valiant struggle against a life-threatening depressive illness as well as a comprehensive self-help manual on treating depression. What I liked most is that the book is so accessible. It lays out practical coping strategies that a person suffering from depression or their caregiver can use on a daily basis. I also like that the author was healed by spiritual intervention, showing that alternatives do exist when drugs don't work. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with depression or anxiety, or to anyone who wants to give a loved one with a depressive disorder the gift of hope.

Good book if you've never seen or read a self help book on the subject. Good coverage of drug choices to use when consulting doctors.

4 out of 5 stars Review from a "Bipole".......2004-03-22

This is a fabulous resource. I've had depression, mania and anxiety (as well as panic attacks) for the past at least four years, and I've read A LOT of books that aim to help you understand your diagnosis, symptoms, and struggles, and many have been very helpful. This one takes the cake. While not all of the information was new to me, a lot of it was, and the format was perfect for truly helping me understand. The only reason I gave it a 4 instead of 5 is because I wish there were a newer edition that could update some of the information on medications.

2 out of 5 stars Very Basic.......2002-04-10

I was disappointed with this one. Everyone else liked it. I just thought it was very plain, and became bored with it quickly. If you suffer from anxiety check out "Embracing the Fear"...

5 out of 5 stars easy to read and understand.......2000-04-21

I found the book to be very useful in understanding some of the problems my Grandmother faces on a day to day basis and how I might be able to help her.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a Doctor who talks to us and not AT us!.......2000-03-11

As a businessman doing business in the always hostile Russian Far East, I am constantly put into severe situations of a dangerous and stressful nature. In seeking advice on handling the anxiety and stress that come with such situations, it was such a refreshing change to read a book that is written from a perspective of understanding and compassion. No "down talking" lectures, but straight talking help for everyone dealing with anxiety, depression or stress. Many of the business partners and friends I have in Russia suffer from severe depression due to the heavy use of alcohol and their living environment. Understanding their needs and situation will certainly help in my work and friendships. Having a Medical Doctor affirm the status of gay and lesbians and the depression that often effects our lives is also a great help to us all! Thank You Dr. Gardner!

Book Description

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Stands out!.......2006-11-10

When I started to experience severe panic & anxiety attacks 3 years ago I went and bought myself a dozen of books on this topic (anxiety, panic attacks, PTSD) and through the years they all helped me in one way or another, but two stand out and I honestly think I could not do without them. They are Overcoming Anxiety, by Reneau and The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook, by Edmund J. Bourne. As other reviewer mentioned, this book focuses inclusively on cognitive-behavioral treatment of anxiety disorders, which is a highly effective method for medium- to long- term recovery but it does not address the short- term control of anxiety symptoms in as much depth as Bourne's does. Still, I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Finding Long Term recovery.......2000-09-04

This is the perfect companion volume to Peurifoy's previous book: "Anxiety, Phobias and Panic". This book deals with achieving long term recovery, which does not mean the complete absence of anxiety symptoms but the successful management of them. The concern is not just temporary relief or superficial "band-aid" solutions. It describes anxiety as being a "messenger", telling you that you have a problem or life issue that needs to be resolved. The focus is entirely on cognitive-behavioral therapy, NOT medication. It details three levels of recovery: Level 1: Basic Symptom Control, Level 2: Advanced Symptom Control, Level 3: Long Term Recovery. By examining childhood issues and the "roots" of the highly anxious personality, one develops their answer for "why" they suffer from the disorder. The book then guides you through a program for developing skills to manage distressing bodily symptoms, changing distorted thinking patterns which contribute to anxious feelings, progressive desensitzation for phobic sitautions, and changing and enhancing self-image. Attention is given to the detours and setbacks that are often a part of the road to recovery. This approach to the treatment of anxiety is not new, but the book is very well mapped out and provides a comprehensive program that can be utilized by individuals, therapists or groups. It is one of the best books on the cognitive-behavioral treatment of anxiety disorders that I have encountered.

Book Description

"A well-written, fascinating book that is a delight to read. With the development of EMDR, Francine Shapiro has made a profound contribution to psychotherapy and to our knowledge of wisdom and healing."
-- David A. Console, M.D., director of the Trauma Recovery Program, The Menninger Clinic

Hailed as the most important method to emerge in psychotherapy in decades, EMDR has successfully treated complex psychological illnesses and problems--from depression, phobias and recurrent nightmares to post-traumatic stress disorder and long-standing grief--in more than one million sufferers world wide with a rapidity that almost defies belief. In this remarkable new book, Dr. Francine Shapiro, the originator and developer of EMDR, explains how she created her groundbreaking therapy--Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), how it works, and how it can help those who feel stuck in negative reactions and behaviors.

The story of EMDR began one day when Shapiro was strolling through a park. As disturbing thoughts flashed through her mind, she moved her eyes from side to side and noticed that her negative feelings immediately dissipated. Building on this finding, she spent the next decade creating a breakthrough therapy that has been acclaimed by clinicians, lauded by crisis intervention organizations, and endorsed by academicians. As one of the most extensively researched and supported methods for treating trauma, EMDR is now practiced around the world.

Today there are more than 20,000 trained EMDR therapists in the United States alone. To illustrate the astounding transformations made possible by EMDR therapy, Dr. Shapiro offers here some of the many compelling case studies to emerge from their work. In these flashbacks, who is able to pull his life together; a young boy, plagued with nightmares after gaining consciousness in the middle of surgery, who begins to sleep peacefully; a rape victim, paralyzed by her fear of leaving the house, who is able to put her trauma behind her; and many more.

EMDR's benefits are not limited to the effects of obvious trauma. This therapy has also been used extensively for those who suffer form the aftereffects of what Dr. Shapiro calls "small t" trauma, the more common, often unsuspected, disturbing past experiences that are also responsible for present debilitating behaviors, anxiety, and stress.

Just as Prozac has changed the face of psychotherapy, EMDR is radically altering psychiatrists' ideas about how the mind works and how the psyche heals. From Oklahoma City to Bosnia, in therapists' offices across the land, EMDR is offering hope, at last, for the millions who suffer.

"EMDR is the most revolutionary important method to emerge in psychotherapy in decades."
--Herbert Fensterheim, Ph.D., Cornell University, author of Don't Say Yes When You Want to Say No

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Great Explanation of EMDR.......2007-05-17

This book is not particularly useful for clinicians. Laypeople who want a clear overview of EMDR will find it in this book by the "discoverer" of the techniques.

4 out of 5 stars Good overview but perhaps a little out of date.......2006-11-12

This book is good for having an overview of EMDR and its history. It is not, however, the most current book out there and is also more appropriate for clinicians than for the layman.

5 out of 5 stars Very convincing.......2006-11-04

This book provides an excellent study of the effectiveness of EMDR--eye movement desensitization and reprocessing--for prospective patients and their families, alike.

No question, the book is very well written, and, as one other reviewer noted, a page turner. As a result, we were seriously considering this method for our child. And we may well consider the idea again in the future.

For the moment, we are pursuing neurobiofeedback, which seems to treat injured portions of the brain very effectively, promoting calm, stability and mood elevation. But in nations and regions where neurobiofeedback is not yet available, EMDR may well provide the next best thing.

My only concern is a report of possible brain injury as a result of this therapy. I have not seen any medical corroboration of that report, however. And it seems that EMDR is now a medically accepted method of treatment, particularly in cases of post-traumatic stress disorder.

This book provides a great introduction to the concepts, and frequently positive results, of such treatment.

4 out of 5 stars Very useful and well written.......2006-08-23

Very useful and understandable, practical tool and method. It is welcomed as an assett to the counseling profession

5 out of 5 stars This is a case examples book, not a text........2005-10-09

I read the criticisms from other readers and felt that they didn't understand the intention of the book. They wanted an explanation of how to do EMDR, and this is a casebook of examples not a text. If you want to understand how to do EMDR, you have to read the textbook by Dr. Shapiro that explains the procedures and protocols. If you want to actually do EMDR, you have to take the class. I did last year, and because I haven't practiced I am taking it again. It's not something you want to try on your own.

So, if you want examples of cases, read this book. If you want to know the protocols, get the textbook. They are both good. Some of the cases are somewhat graphic in detail, but you get a better idea of "how" EMDR is used. It is a good companion to the text.

I'm not sure I'd want a client to read this book, unless I'd carefully thought about how it would impact them. These are not your run of the mill cases. The majority of cases have suffered extremely horrific traumas to better illustrate how well EMDR can work.

5 out of 5 stars correction.......2004-07-09

This is not a review. I am the main author of OVERCOMING ANXIETY AT WORK, but only my wife Jane, who is the secondary author, is listed.

Please make a correction and list my name first.

(Your listing for our other book, MOTIVATION AT WORK, is correct--Jane is the main author of that work, and I am the secondary author.)
