There are more high-salaried women in the workforce today than ever before, yet most females remain seriously underpaid when compared to their male counterparts. Motivational speaker and financial journalist Barbara Stanny decided to find out why by identifying the differences between those who draw the big bucks and those who don't. In Secrets of Six-Figure Women she reveals what makes the leading edge tick, as well as how others can use the information to boost their own paychecks and self-esteem. "For far too many women, financial limits have become a fact of life. The thought of making more is like climbing Mount Everest, a colossal, if not impossible task," writes Stanny. "That's exactly how I used to feel." By examining scores of top moneymakers, along with dozens of those earning below their potentials, Stanny discovered what works and what doesn't. After analyzing the subsequent lessons (i.e., you actually can boost your income without selling out, the requisite traits to do so can be developed by virtually anyone, money really can't buy happiness), she proposes specific strategies for maximizing their impact (intend from the start to succeed, stretch yourself, manage any payoff with care). Stanny professes throughout that she desires to offer "insight, hope and guidance to any of you who aspire to earn more." With this surprisingly practical and ultimately inspirational guidebook, she delivers. --Howard Rothman

Book Description

Quietly and steadily, the number of women making six figures or more is increasing and continues to rise at a rate faster than for men. From entrepreneurs to corporate executives, from white-collar professionals to freelancers and part-timers, women are forging careers with considerable financial success.

In Secrets of Six-Figure Women, Barbara Stanny, journalist, motivational speaker, and financial educator, identifies the seven key strategies of female highearners: A Profit Motive, Audacity, Resilience, Encouragement, Self-Awareness, Non-attachment, and Financial Know-How.

Based on extensive research and hundreds of interviews, including more than 150 women whose annual earnings range from $100,000 to $7 million, Barbara Stanny turns each of the six-figure traits into a specific strategy for upping earnings. By rigorously fine-tuning them, readers can, step-by-step, climb the income ladder.

5 out of 5 stars You'll read this book over and over.......2007-08-26

In Secrets of Six-Figure Women, Stanny takes you through a process of recognizing why so many women underearn and what we can do to earn what we are worth. From dealing with our fears about stepping out of our comfort zone and challenging longstanding beliefs to helping readers learn to develop a profit motive, this book will help you position yourself to prosper mentally, emotionally and physically.
On a personal note - as a female business owner, whenever I'm tempted to undercharge for my services or allow fear to impact my decisions, I re-read "Secrets of Six Figure Women," to help me stay on the six figure track and remind myself that I'm worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Great advice for any career woman.......2007-06-05

Even if you're already at $100k+, this is a great book for general career advice, and even financial planning. Liked it so much I bought two for friends. Reminds you to be assertive and have confidence and to ask for things; don't get left behind. Good insight into past decision making, too; prevent future mistakes.

5 out of 5 stars every woman should read this.......2007-04-12

It's going on my keeper shelf to be reread once a year.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the read!.......2007-03-15

Great book for all women that want to or have crossed the six-figure line to read. It has alot of inspirational stories of women who had the very same fears, yet got through it.
Definitely a book for all women to have in their book arsenal.

5 out of 5 stars the only page-turner of a self-help book I've ever read.......2007-01-21

This book is a genuinely fun read. I had trouble putting it down. Self-help books aren't supposed to page-turners, but this one is.

The point of the book is to outline the behaviors and thoughts that are common to all of the high-earning women who the author interviewed... But what makes it a fun read are all of the inspiring stories of high-earning women with diverse backgrounds and occupations. They are generally women who start off giving up their lives (and/or incomes) either for their loved ones, or for their charities, or for their boss, and then making various breakthroughs that made them start taking care of themselves first and foremost, while still caring for their friends and family as much as (if not more than) before, and of course making more money too. Their stories will leave you feeling optimistic about your own professional future, regardless of your field and rank. There are also stories about women who were always proud, positive-thinking, successful people, whose stories are equally as inspiring.

The "secrets" that the author outlines are so obviously essential to success, but so nebulous and elusive in our minds when we set personal goals, that it's invaluable that the author has pinpointed them, named them, described them, and turned them into strategies for success. And by showing the readers specific examples of how these behaviors were used in real people's lives, she gives the reader a concrete example to follow, to use as a starting point for the reader's own self-improvement.

(And a sidenote: This book is not just for women. The strategies the author outlines can be applied to anyone's life, male or female, and the stories are probably just as inspiring for a man as for a woman.)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Several lessons to be learned in here.......2007-06-06

Jack Chapman has several lessons in this book that we can all learn from. He starts by making you realize how quickly we move into talking about salary and settling on whatever happens to seem "safe" (so as to not "loose" the job opportunity in front of us), although this is perhaps one of the most important career decisions we can make at the moment.

He borrows from successful negotiation techniques at large and applies them with laser-sharp focus on negotiating the best possible salary with all parts winning. Included in the book is a discussion of elements such as evaluating stock option packages and helping the interviewee shape the job s/he is applying for, by having the interview be paced differently.

Not groundbreaking, but very useful for those planning to make a career move.

5 out of 5 stars Worth thousands.......2007-05-30

I'm a career coach and my clients have utilized the strategies in this book with great success. Last week a client suggested that the title should be, "How To Make $2000 A Minute" because by taking two minutes to ask a recruiter if her starting salary could be increased, she received $4000 more in base pay. Other clients have negotiated even more. This book is definitely worth the small investment to purchase it as there is a good chance that the reader can recover the cost of the book many times over.

5 out of 5 stars Good Buy.......2006-03-23

This book works! I used it to help negotiate a recent job offer last week. Using the techniques in this book I was able to secure an expense account (moderate size) and a pay increase of $3,000. I am sure this is entry level progress. However, for my first effort in negotiating I am quite proud of the results.

This book is an easy read and straight to the point. The tactics recommended are simple to follow and will set you on a trail to free thinking as to how to maximize your monetary worth.

1 out of 5 stars Save your $12.95...better info on the net.......2006-02-13

This book could have been a pamphlet of about 5-10 pages instead of a book, and it should have been given free of charge. Although there are many very positive reviews on this book, this book doesn't tell you what you need to do to get a raise, but leaves you, the reader, to decide what steps you could take that might lead to a raise (or might lead to you getting terminated), with each having a different positive or negative result. This was just another attempt by a no-name author to try and make a buck off of the general public. What a waste of $13.

4 out of 5 stars Informative.......2006-01-06

I received this book as a gift, but it is well worth its money. This is an easy-to-read book on the do's and don'ts of the salary negotiations during the interviewing process. The author answers questions about telling salary rates to temp. agencies as well as corporate agencies. He explains the pitfalls of asking too early and not getting the amount deserved. He explains when to ask, what to ask, and even better...what should you research before you speak on the topic of salary. The only reason the book didn't get five stars is because I'm still a little hesitant as to why he concentrated his research with the job seekers instead of the companies. Many of the things that the seekers are told to say, I'm not convinced the employer would be that thrilled about. He mentions how some may not be happy and/or lose out on the seeker's worth, but I wish there was a more concentrated fine line where both can feel comfortable during the interview(s). Other than that, great book.

UPDATE:
I just recently got a full-time, permanent Copyediting job (a job I've been trying to get forever!) and when the question about salary was asked, not only did I remember what I read from this book, but I used it word-for-word and got the job with a bigger salary than they initially wanted to give me. I'm forever grateful to this author!

5 out of 5 stars I use these techniques ALL the time!.......2004-04-22

I purchased the pdf version of this book online in 2000. It is not the complete version of the book this one is and has only 142 pages of text, but it may have been the wisest purchase I I've ever made! Unlike the last reviewer, I believe Proven Resumes is worth every single penny and much more!

I would like to note that I am in a career field that does, in fact, require a chronological resume, and yet I use the wonderful self-selling techniques Ms. Pontow shares on my own resumes consistently, and it has truly paid off, not only financially, but in my belief in my own abilities. In just the four years since applying this system, my income has increased by half, paying me back a thousand fold, yearly, of my initial purchase price!

I have also used Proven Resumes to help other people with their resumes, and MOST of them have used the skills-based format, and MOST of them have achieved their employment objectives with these resumes. For instance:

A part-time teacher aide with teaching credentials but no professional teaching experience is now a full-time kindergarten teacher. A grocery store cashier obtained a position as a paralegal secretary. Another grocery store cashier, who had worked at the same store for 20 years and had never written a resume before, is now happily settled in a full-time bank teller position. A veterinarian friend who was applying for a year-long leadership training project was rejected the first year she applied, but the second year, after I re-wrote her resume using Proven Resume techniques, she was accepted. Oh, yeah, and I helped my teenage son with his skills-based resume, and he is now working as a website technician / reporter... an incredibly amazing first job!

I would like to make one more plug: These techniques can be used for more than just job resumes. I write up a skills/project based "annual report," if you will, for my annual reviews, so that I can prove to my boss that my skills are growing, and I'm consistenly making the workplace better (You don't stop selling yourself just because you've landed a job). I've used the quantifying and qualifying techniques to write persuasive proposals. And I used a skills-based resume to apply for, and obtain, a position on a state-wide board of directors. It's not just about GETTING a job!

For just a few dollars more, this book has nearly twice as much information as the still-available-online version. It's a bargain!

1 out of 5 stars Be prepared to re-write.......2003-04-16

I purchased this book about a year ago to assist in a job search I was doing. Initially, I was very excited; I felt the strategies made sense and the results were positive changes in my resume.

Unfortunately, the recruiting industry may not be ready for this radical change in resume strategies. Nearly 100% of the people who responded to my resume submissions said "You have a great skill set, but I really need this resume re-done in a traditional, chronological style." Who knows how many never bothered to respond?

Some of the information in the book is valuable, especially the keyword mapping items, but it certainly is not worth the price tag.

5 out of 5 stars These strategies work ..........2002-01-14

Once I made the decision to move on I needed a little help in repacking my experience. This book not only helped me rethink my skill set but also expanded my horizons. I was able to make a substantial jump using some of Pontow's recommendations. I passed the book onto others looking to make a move. Well worth the $ ... and I'm happily on a new career path!

5 out of 5 stars This is it!.......2000-08-04

Regina Pontow has to be the undisputed goddess of resume examples, interview strategies, and heroine of the entire career imbroglio. Read it, flip through it, cut and paste to your heart's content. She has the POWER to drive your words.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A must-read for a great interview.......2004-03-06

Whenever I am job hunting or campaigning for a promotion, I grab this book and brush up on my skills. The "Two-Minute Pitch" outlined in part two is the key to having a great interview. Only once have I gone into an interview without flipping through this book first and I really regretted it. A job seeker can probably have a good interview without reading this book, but he or she will have a GREAT interview after reading it.

1 out of 5 stars Like reading an advertisement.......2002-07-05

I bought this book along with three others that included tips on getting an interview, job offer, and then negotiating salary. This one was wordy and interspersed with advertisements for The Five O'Clock Club. It was also a bit heavy on worksheets and self-assessment tools. I found myself skipping over large sections at a time.

I give the book one star because it does have good tips on salary negotiation, but I think there are other books out there that "have it all," including the salary neg. tips. My personal fave is "60 seconds & You're Hired" by Robin Ryan. I've read it before a few job interviews and have felt prepared and confident. 5 O'clock Club, on the other hand, feels like a big homework assignment I just don't want to face.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - easily worth the money!.......1999-12-05

This book was obviously written by someone with good sense and a lot of experience in the subject.

It provides an effective, concise series of steps for getting and surviving interviews, getting offers, and negotiating the perks. Real-world cases demonstrate each of the steps and how to (and not to) execute them.

For job seekers and consultants alike, the author highlights the not-so-obvious fact that job descriptions are usually very flexible. By helping the hiring manager customize the role to fit your strengths and demonstrate your value, you can justify higher pay, yield a job you'll be happier with, and become more valuable than your competitors.

The chapters on salary negotiation are particularly good, especially sections on properly timing the salary negotiation (i.e., after you've shown the hiring manager the value of your particular skills) and handling objections during the process.

This book seems to be part of a series by the Five O'Clock Club. Their title on "Targeting the Job You Want" sounds like it might also be an excellent accompanyment, helping Job Seekers first define the kind of role they should be seeking.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Must read for every woman.......2006-12-25

If you are working woman seeking a new job, or a housewife going back to the market, this is a must read book. It is the only book I came across that indicates the way men perceive women during the job interview and salary negotiations. The psychology part of the book has made me even more gutsy when it comes to job search interview techniques and the way of presenting myself to a potential employer. There are some smart answers one can use when in an interview with biased or sexist interviewer. Sameples of thank you letters and career woman organizations are very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars A study guide for interviews.......2005-01-29

I bombed an interview a few years ago. I did everything wrong, and I was not prepaired at all. A friend loaned me this book, saying it had helped her out and that it was geared towards women. Reading it felt like I cramming for a huge test.
Ms. King puts things in such a clear and understandable way. This is the perfect book for people like me, who didn't know the first thing about interveiwing and salary negotiation. It is also good for people who just want to brush up on their skills.
After 'studying' this book, I went for another interveiw with the same company a few months down the line. Before I knew it, I had the job and a better salary than I expected. I know I couldn't have done it without this book! It was a huge help, and I know it will help you!

5 out of 5 stars Worked for me.......2004-05-12

This book worked for me. I read the interview chapters just before an interview and I "rocked"! Then that night I used the salary negotiation techniques and they worked! I just followed her instructions and was able to raise my starting salary by 25%.

3 out of 5 stars Not for seasoned professionals.......2003-08-12

While this book may be helpful, presenting new information to those new to the job market, I found most of the information to be trite. Also, I found no significant salary negotiation information, which is why I picked this title. A big disappointer, this book is. But luckily I just borrowed it from the local library so I'm not out any precious cash.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed Job Hunter.......2001-04-14

After reading such rave reviews, I was quite excited to order this book. Unfortunately, I was sorely disappointed. As I flipped through the pages - I quickly discovered outdated advice. For example, the book warns its women readers of discrimination and sexism and states that women make far less than men in similar positions. Most of its statements are supported by 1995 reports; the same year this book was published.

On the flip side - this book does offer helpful information - although it is somewhat elementary. I bought the book in search of salary negotiation tactics. This book covers advice on interviewing about 90% and 10% on salary negotiating.

5 out of 5 stars Put Your Best Foot Forward.......2005-12-22

Interviewing potential employees feels like a cross between a treasure hunt and a business transaction. The boss is looking for someone with energy, enthusiasm, job skills, and who fits with the current team. Far too many candidates have no idea of the image they project. Slumped in a chair while mumbling answers is not likely to impress an employer.

5 out of 5 stars Get what you deserve!.......2004-03-08

This is a fantastic book about salary negotiation and more. Not only does Chapman discuss salary negotiation (both at time of hire and subsequently), but he discusses why and how people should be paid what they are worth. He shows how both company and employee win when an employee is paid fairly, and how both lose when an employee is paid unfairly. Please be aware that this book does not advocate getting "more" unless you are not being paid or offered what you are worth.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book on Salary Negotiations.......2003-03-17

Describes how to negotiate salary by taking employers through three stages of thinking about your salary: 1) budget- this is the range. I will go no further; 2) fudge it--OK, I see this person's value, let's see what I can do; and 3)judge it- I jusge this is what we need. Now, how can I pay them enough? The section on research is exceptional. In addition, there are many excellent phrases to memorize for sticky negotiating points.

5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2002-10-06

This book or audiobook is a must have. I used these techniques to successfully negotiate a salary increase of 30% one year and a $10,000 bonus the following year.

This book breaks it down step by step and gives you lines to say. It was amazing! Everything the book said the employer would bring up did come up and I was ready with a counter-aurguement. Marvelous!

Don't go into another salary negotiation or performance review without reading this book or listening to the audio-tape. The ROI on this investment has been more than 1000% for me!

5 out of 5 stars a profitable read.......2000-11-30

This was a fast and (hopefully) profitable read for me. His techniques are simple and forward. No magic or miracles promised, just some old-fashioned horse-sense for understanding the salary negotiating game and how and why to develop your own negotiating strategies beforehand. The mind-opening section for me was the "budget-fudgit-judgit" stages in Chapter Three "Salary-Making Rule 1: When to Discuss Money". Also good strategies to use to get a raise or at salary review time.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC! Chapman's a "negotiating Guru" without equal........2000-05-27

YOU GOTTA GET IT! "Negotiating Your Salary" is, without question, the best investment any working individual - or entrepreneur - can make! And what a bargain - if anyone knew what was between the covers, and what an incredible impact it would have on them financially, they would gladly spent ten times the cover price. I am an independent career consultant working with several major outplacement and career coaching entities. As a recognized authority on the subject of job search, I have copyrighted my own program and book on the topic. But when it comes to negotiating techniques, I bow to the Master. I highly recommend "Negotiating Your Salary" to everyone who wants to improve their financial position! I have "sold" this book to every single person I counsel, including a business client who drastically needed to learn how to stop being shy about asking for what she was worth. My copy of "Negotiating Your Salary" is already dog-eared because I read it over and over again. It's my "negotiating bible."

This tiny little 3"x3" book may have a couple of somewhat obvious ideas but overall there are much better books out there with real ideas and strategies for getting a raise or negotiating salary. Try Jack Chapman's "How to Make $1000 a Minute"

1 out of 5 stars Poor choice.......2007-03-11

I probably did not know that this book is not what it is meant for. I bought it thinking it would help me in writing a contract for an associate of mine and that it would have different formulas for production based compensation. It does not. I am not sure what this book is written for, to be honest. After reading it, I do not believe that I learned anything at all!
