Personal-finance author and lecturer Robert Kiyosaki developed his unique economic perspective through exposure to a pair of disparate influences: his own highly educated but fiscally unstable father, and the multimillionaire eighth-grade dropout father of his closest friend. The lifelong monetary problems experienced by his "poor dad" (whose weekly paychecks, while respectable, were never quite sufficient to meet family needs) pounded home the counterpoint communicated by his "rich dad" (that "the poor and the middle class work for money," but "the rich have money work for them"). Taking that message to heart, Kiyosaki was able to retire at 47. Rich Dad, Poor Dad, written with consultant and CPA Sharon L. Lechter, lays out his the philosophy behind his relationship with money. Although Kiyosaki can take a frustratingly long time to make his points, his book nonetheless compellingly advocates for the type of "financial literacy" that's never taught in schools. Based on the principle that income-generating assets always provide healthier bottom-line results than even the best of traditional jobs, it explains how those assets might be acquired so that the jobs can eventually be shed. --Howard Rothman

A #1 New York Times bestseller, 'Rich Dad, Poor Dad' is a true story on the lessons about money that Robert Kiyosaki learned from his two "dads." One dad, a Ph.D. and superintendent of education, never had enough money at the end of the month and died broke. His other dad dropped out of school at age 13 and went on to become one of the wealthiest men in Hawaii. 'Rich Dad, Poor Dad' will . . .· Explode the myth that you need to earn a high income to become rich · Challenge the belief that your house is an asset · Show parents why they can't rely on the school system to teach their kids about money
· Define once and for all an asset and a liability · Teach you what to teach your kids about money for their future financial success. In 'Rich Dad, Poor Dad', Robert Kiyosaki explains how to make your money work hard for you instead of you working hard for money.

EXCELLENT material! Recommend to everybody! The secret to becoming rich is actually no secret at all. It is available to anyone willing to work for it.

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful information !.......2007-10-21

This is a book I didn't like at first, and later on found it to be very valuable and useful. It truthfully tells you where you need to spend your time if you really want to become rich. To use these methods presented in the book, you will have to work really hard, take risks, study, plan, and take the subject matter presented seriously.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-10-20

I bought this book out of curiosity, to see for myself what the hype is all about.
I have to admit that the first part really drew my attention. Co-writer Sharon Lechter did a good job placing the story in the setting of two kids growing up. It makes the simple content digestible.
But then out of the blue Mr. Kiyosaki takes the word and it feels like the editor didn't have the time to finish her job. It is embarrassing to see K. showing off and telling us how he made his fortune being a real estate speculant.

Regards,
Norbert

5 out of 5 stars An Interesting Perspective.......2007-10-20

While it is difficult to imagine what new commentary one could add to the thousands of reviews of this fine book, I thought it would be beneficial to point out a significant characteristic that seems rarely touched by others. Namely, the testimony-like nature of the message.

While there are many business and investment books on the market worth the time to read, few are as adept as Robert Kiyosaki (and his actual writer, Sharon Lechter) at contextualizing his instruction. By giving the reader a "this is what happened to me, and this is what I learned from the experience" message, the author is essentially giving his own personal narrative of his life's journey into his present understanding of business and investments. By so doing, he offers the reader insight into the WAY a person of his economic stature thinks...and more importantly, WHY.

The autobiographical nature of the text adds tremendous flavor to the message this best-selling book conveys. In my opinion, Rich Dad, Poor Dad is a remarkable book that anyone interested in business and/or investments should consider a "must read" in their studies.

Moreover, to truly garner the key nuggets of the author's revelation, one should also immediately read the sequel, Cashflow Quadrant: Rich Dad's Guide to Financial Freedom. Nearly twice as thick, this second text is truly the finishing touch on the original work.

In conclusion, the few negative reviews I have read of Rich Dad, Poor Dad seemed to be written by those who expected something different than what was intended by the author. By logical extension, it appears obvious that they failed to read the sequel so that they could truly conceptualize the appeal of the author's message...an appeal that has made this not only a best-seller, but a true legend in the business non-fiction genre.

3 out of 5 stars Inspirational stories - but repetitive information.......2007-10-19

Robert Kiyosaki has shared a lot of his personal experiences of making money. I enjoyed reading the first few chapters. The rest, pretty much carried the same information. This book motivates you to become rich. The author recommends to develop and use your ingenuity to create wealth.

I couldn't still understand why "buying a house" couldn't be considered as a way of asset creation. Most of the author's examples are about real estates & investing in stocks.

If you want to get inspired about making money, this is the book to read.

Book Description

THE NATIONAL BESTSELLING BOOK THAT EVERY INVESTOR SHOULD OWN

Peter Lynch is America's number-one money manager. His mantra: Average investors can become experts in their own field and can pick winning stocks as effectively as Wall Street professionals by doing just a little research.

Now, in a new introduction written specifically for this edition of One Up on Wall Street, Lynch gives his take on the incredible rise of Internet stocks, as well as a list of twenty winning companies of high-tech '90s. That many of these winners are low-tech supports his thesis that amateur investors can continue to reap exceptional rewards from mundane, easy-to-understand companies they encounter in their daily lives.

Investment opportunities abound for the layperson, Lynch says. By simply observing business developments and taking notice of your immediate world -- from the mall to the workplace -- you can discover potentially successful companies before professional analysts do. This jump on the experts is what produces "tenbaggers," the stocks that appreciate tenfold or more and turn an average stock portfolio into a star performer.

The former star manager of Fidelity's multibillion-dollar Magellan Fund, Lynch reveals how he achieved his spectacular record. Writing with John Rothchild, Lynch offers easy-to-follow directions for sorting out the long shots from the no shots by reviewing a company's financial statements and by identifying which numbers really count. He explains how to stalk tenbaggers and lays out the guidelines for investing in cyclical, turnaround, and fast-growing companies.

Lynch promises that if you ignore the ups and downs of the market and the endless speculation about interest rates, in the long term (anywhere from five to fifteen years) your portfolio will reward you. This advice has proved to be timeless and has made One Up on Wall Street a number-one bestseller. And now this classic is as valuable in the new millennium as ever.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The most famous book from the legendary investor .......2007-10-16

This was the book that catapuled individual investing. He teaches you how to beat the market just by keeping your eyes and ears open.

Unfortunately, most investors don't follow his rules.

A reread for those who have questions about their returns.

This book is the Bible for investing!

5 out of 5 stars Teaching From a Master.......2007-10-12

(This is a review of the full-sized edition, not the ill-advised miniature that has garnered so much negative comment.)

Why listen to Peter Lynch? He's one of the greatest stock market investors of all time. From 1977 to 1990, Lynch managed the Magellan mutual fund for Fidelity Investments. The fund's assets increased more than 2,700%.

Is that a lot? It's like Barry Bonds hitting 200 home runs in a season. It's a staggering achievement, unlikely to ever be duplicated.

There is a small industry of financial advice out there from people with no documented success. Lucky for us, Lynch decided to share his methods.

One Up on Wall Street puts stock picking skill into the minds of everyday people. The book is written in a breezy, accessible style that non-financial types will appreciate. Lynch also gives a glimpse at his life at Fidelity during his tenure running Magellan.

Stock picking is an art. Lynch delves into the intuitive side of investing. It's not all about financial statements and balance sheets, although he gives you a quick rundown of those too (Chapter 13: Some Famous Numbers). The book has more ideas per page than any of the several stock market books that I have read.

Information overload can paralyze the mind of a stockpicker. If you're not a data type of person, stock research can make your head explode. Lynch spells out a way to find good investments without suffering brain damage.

To use a food analogy, he doesn't give you a recipe, he teaches you how to cook.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read for any new Investor.......2007-08-08

I've been looking for more information on how to invest into this stock market. This book was EXACTLY what I was looking for. Not only did it help me figure out what kinds of companies to keep my eye out for, it also gave me ways and formulas to check out to verify if the stock was a good buy or not. I highly recommend this book!

1 out of 5 stars THE SMALLEST BOOK EVER.......2007-07-31

This is a MINIATURE book. Literally. 3 inces x 3 inches, "95 pages" with 30 or 40 big words on each page. Ridiculous. I can't believe such a thing was manufactured.

5 out of 5 stars Good start for investing basics.......2007-07-15

Excellent primer for how to consider investments from a qualitative perspective, rather than the number crunching quantitive perspective put forth by so many other writers. Peter Lynch demonstrates how amateur investors can have an edge on Wall Street professionals through our day-to-day interactions with businesses.

Book Description

When it comes to money, are you controlled by fear? Do you live in financial chaos?Do you underestimate your worth? Are you ready to go to the next level, but can't seem to get there? If the answer is yes to these questions, you may be an underearner.

Underearners are self-saboteurs who never live up to their earnings potential, says Barbara Stanny, a financial educator, motivational speaker, former journalist, and career counselor. Underearners tend to live paycheck to paycheck. They rarely balance their checkbooks and are often in debt. Ironically, many work incredibly hard. Yet they are ashamed to admit that money matters to them. They all have a high tolerance for low pay.

The good news is that underearning is often self-imposed. By focusing on overcoming underearning, you will not only earn what you deserve, but you can live up to your full potential. With techniques and exercises that have helped thousands of people who have participated in her Overcoming Underearning™ workshops, Stanny teaches you five essential steps to financial independence. Once you understand these steps, you will be confident asking for a raise, increasing your prices, or getting a better job. "Now I'm making more than my friends, all because I had the guts to dream and ask for more," says one Stanny fan.

First, Tell the Truth: be honest about your financial situation and figure out your attitudes toward money. Second, Make a Decision: decide that you want to make more money. Third, Stretch: take action, face your fears, and be willing to be uncomfortable. Fourth, Create Community by finding supporters and asking for help. Fifth, Respect and Appreciate Money: learn to save and invest.

Overcoming Underearning is filled with inspiring, real-life stories of underearners who turned their lives around. Stanny brings a message of empowerment and hope to all those who chronically undervalue themselves. "I'm making more, working less, feeling healthier, have more energy, and I'm so much happier," concludes another Stanny believer.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Valuable Content.......2006-06-30

If you are frustrated by a sense that you're selling yourself short in business situations due to a lack of the right tools or right self-concept, this book deftly addresses these challenges and gives excellent exercises to help you improve these areas.

I picked this up at the library, but expect I will purchase it for permanent use. I wasn't particularly drawn during my scan of the book (table of contents, recommendations etc.), but somehow would get a pang when I replaced it on the library shelf. So, checked it out and stayed up till 3 a.m. reading it! Still have about 1/4 of the book to go, but I really got a lot out of it.
I consider myself pretty tough in my evaluations of self-help type literature, I have read my share of it. I want it to say something new, offer substance and make sense. There's a lot of rigorous and innovative thought behind what Ms. Stanny says, and it is presented in a way that reached me.

Her resource/additional reading section at the end is concise and seems carefully considered, and she explains why she has chosen each resource well. I especially found helpful her list comparing the differences between "dawdlers" and "doers".

5 out of 5 stars The Most Powerful Book On Money Out There!.......2006-06-28

A friend recommended Barbara Stanny's books to me...and they have changed how I look at money and my comfort level with it. The book is SO completely readable (as all of hers are) that you feel like you are curled up with a girlfriend chatting about one of the most important topics we MUST talk about - money. The exercises in the book are invaluable and create real breakthroughs that help women get smart about their money and earn what they are worth once and for all. If you get the chance to see Barbara in person, do it - barbarastanny.com is a great resource, too. Do yourself a HUGE favor that will have a lasting impact on your financial future - get this book...and then get copies for all your girlfriends!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Childish.......2006-01-10

I was expecting to learn stuff like the most effective way to train people, how to structure training programs, how people learn etc. Instead, this book covers stuff that's very elementary and anyone who's a manager and got a grain of sense should know. It has a condecending tone towards managers--as in, your people need training because you're a moron. For example, "there probably isn't one worker in a thousand who can clearly describe the results (or accomplishments) they are expected to achieve." or "It's not uncommon for people to be expected to do things that they haven't been given permission to do." I only got to about page 50 and the tone and quality were consistant with these quotes.

Look elsewhere if you have a brain.

4 out of 5 stars Good book. Typical Mager - easy to read, lots of good stuff.......1999-07-29

Valuable book, well worth the reading time. Good for Managers, Training Managers and developers.

5 out of 5 stars Get results, save money: apply this book........1999-06-15

In his typical clear, jargon-free style, Bob Mager explains what training is, and what it's not. "Training" won't fix a problem unless the problem stems from a lack of skill or knowledge.

Mager explains why you can't train your way out of badly designed jobs, or idiotic incentive systems, or a lack of resources. He also shows ways to deal with those barriers to accomplishment.

And that's the heart of the matter. In the world of training and development, we talk about performance improvement -- focusing first on the results you want to get, and then examining possible reasons why you're not getting those results. Mager's book demystifies that focus and that examination.

Skeptical? I've been in the training business for over 20 years. For people who want a quick, cogent, useful understanding of both training and performance improvement, there's no better place to start than with "What Every Manager Should Know."

I enjoyed this book and definitely learned things I did not know about optimizing page layouts and ad styles on web pages. The author also provides a lot of links and information about tools that can be used to manage and monitor your adSense account. The only slightly negative thing to say is the author spends quite a bit of time advertising his own products, but hey we live in a capitalist system. This book was worth the money.

Too many children think their parents have an endless supply of money for them to tap into. When denied a purchase, they think the parent is being mean. Setting up a structure and helping your child understand and respect money is a chore, but it will pay off in the long run.

5 out of 5 stars What a parent needs to know to help their kids understand money.......2005-09-17

With each generation the children seem to have more money available to them than their parents. With this should come responsibility and learning how to spend or save wisely. The problem is that most just learn to spend as soon as they get it, get it by begging parents or an allowance with no responsibilities involved or similar. Enter Janet Bodnar, deputy-editor of Kiplinger's Personal Finance, mother of three, and writer of the Money Smart Kids column in Kiplinger Magazine. This is not a collection of hard and fast rules to force good finance habits onto kids but a framework within which parents can use good common sense to handle any situation. The book starts with a quiz to test your money smarts. This quiz is excellent and presents most of the potential situations you are likely to encounter with children and money. The author even includes examples of questions kids ask and how to answer them. One of the insightful sections is one on how kids think about money and how to deal with these concepts from preschool to teenager. Ms. Bodnar even includes a fascinating chapter on questions and answers about money's history, composition, and dozens of other miscellaneous facts. Prepare your children to know how to deal with money when they are grown. Raising Money Smart Kids is highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Very Funny book, but didn't agree with all advice! .......2007-10-17

I haven't quite read all of this book yet, but what I have read so far is that this author is funny and it is a good read for any bride to be! It will still be something to read after you are married too. I did not like the author assuming that all women have sex before marriage--I am a virgin and plan to be until my wedding day. That was so ridiculous! So, her advice on sex was a little off to me. Anyway, the rest of the book had some good things on switching from being single to married and how to keep up with friends, etc. I will read those parts again to know where to go. Also, I didn't exactly like her part about starting a family. I am Christian/Catholic and we just believe God is part of the say on starting a family. Sometimes your will isn't his and vice versa. I don't believe in any "birth control" and I think the author was on verge of saying this is OK--it is not according to my belief system and I was offended.

All for now.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Read.......2007-08-28

It's an interesting read, but it's definitely geared towards a specific demographic of brides. Any bride that hasn't lived as a single woman on her own for a good amount of time will find this book interesting but not extremely helpful. Still, the author is witty and the book is an easy read.

3 out of 5 stars Tedious and biased.......2007-07-23

I hate to be the lone dissenter, but this book really didn't help me sort out my pre-wedding thoughts. A few months before my wedding, I began to feel somewhat nervous about leaving my single life behind and "becoming another person." I bought this book hoping that it would offer advice and some reassurance that my feelings were shared by other brides.

While it did indeed indicate that my sudden identity concerns were common, I found that most of Stark's advice was based on her own marriage, with a few tidbits thrown in from a few interviews she had done with several young brides--although most of it is common sense. I found myself often thinking that I was reading Stark's autobiography.

That said, it does have some good pointers and a few good stories that a lot of brides can relate to.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book !.......2007-04-04

I am a 40ish bride-to-be and I learned a lot from this book. It's not only advice about weddings, etc., but a really deep look at some serious issues that arise in relationship. Thanks Marg.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent advice and a must-read for newlyweds.......2006-10-24

Someone once said that "When the Wedding March fades and the cake is in crumbs, what you have left is a marriage." There are plenty of books out there for how to plan a wedding, but few to help on the morning after. This practical advice for beginning your marriage and surviving the transition to spouse is both entertaining AND informative. Would make a great gift for a newlywed, or good class reading for those in premarital counseling.

This book was very helpful with starting soap making
The delivery was on time. "thank you"

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource For Beginners.......2006-12-20

In this book there are tips for making hand-milled soap, melt and pour soap and cold-pressed soap. It contains 19 soap recipes, some of which are illustrated in the middle of the book and look just like desserts - and no wonder with names like Chocolate and Coffee Lover's Temptation, Fresh As A Cucumber, Nancy Bee's Honey, Ron's Refreshing Raspberry, etc.

I was personally more interested in the first part of the book, but for those who'd like to make soap for profit, the second part of the book deals with business aspects, as in how and where to sell your soap, what to charge for it, how to go about promoting it and it covers possible legalities that is good to be aware of.

5 out of 5 stars For me, an excellent book for beginners........2006-09-29

I am a beginner with soapmaking and purchased several soapmaking books prior to starting the craft. Of all the books read, this one was the simplest for me to follow. It was straight forward and provided one of the easiest and quickest methods for calculating sodium hydroxide and water. For the new soapmaker, I believe this is definitely one soapmaking book that you should read.

2 out of 5 stars Not For Old-Time Soapmaking.......2005-08-28

This book is good for those who prefer to use the "modern" way to make soap, which is cold-processing. Why make soap in the first place if you are going to do it the simple way?

True soapmaking is done by cooking soap, and this book has no information on that process. The book does give helpful hints about specifics on oils and herbs to use, as well as other soapmaking knowledge - but don't get it if you want specific information on making soap the traditional way. James Herschberger is the soap GURU when it comes to classic soapmaking.

1 out of 5 stars I'm so disappoint ........2005-08-05

Not a soap maker book.

Just saying common things that everybody knows.

1 out of 5 stars what is this book really about??????.......2007-05-13

This book harps on a persons' upbringing and if there was enough encouragement, enthusiam and confidence given as a child... The author feels based on the manner in which the person was raised is relevant to their success...I kept reading ( painfully ) because I was sure somewhere there would be something relevant to the title. Reading this book was like a therapy session , that I did not request..

2 out of 5 stars Misleading title.......2007-04-16

I gave this book two stars not because of the writing, but because the title is misleading. If you're looking for courage to quit your high-paying but soulless job for more soulful work--and maintain your standard of living--this book won't deliver.

Perhaps a better title would be DO WHAT YOU LOVE, THE MONEY WON'T MATTER. That would set a reader's expectations more in line with the book's message. The cases in the book were not monetarily successful. However, they show that if you follow your heart, the money won't matter. The things that money can buy when working a soulless career, such as vacations, clothes, cars, and so on lose their appeal as a reward, because what you DO is the reward. You no longer need what money can buy because you have what money can't buy: love.

5 out of 5 stars More than just a Career book!.......2007-02-20

I simply loved this book! It motivated me greatly on a daily basis and I couldn't wait to continue reading it. I felt so positive and good about my quest.

Even though it was written a while ago, it still has much relevance today. If you think this is just another career book, you are severely mistaken.

There is so much psychology packed into it, in an accessable language. It truly is "food for thought" and makes you think about what your priorities in life are.

Highly recommended. Feel good factor!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-01-09

This is an inspirational and motivating book. Highly recommended for anyone considering a career change or to revitalize your career goals.

5 out of 5 stars Essential book to have.......2006-08-27

This book WILL absolutely help any person find their way. It gives career advice and great life advice. It is a wonderful gift for anyone who feels stuck in their current job and anyone who is ready to branch out. EXCELLENT BOOK! EXCELLENT AUTHOR!

4 out of 5 stars The easiest to read, most comprehensive debt book ever.......2007-05-07

I bought three debt books the last time I was at Amazon. They were all good, but this was the most comprehensive in easy to read format and sentences that it made things easy to develop a plan from this book. I already passed it on to two other people.

5 out of 5 stars great information - but use with caution.......2006-12-14

This book is full of great information on high to prioritize your financial life in terms of debt reduction, retirement saving and other saving. But the advice assumes the reader has a fair amount of discipline (i.e., ability to budget and constrain extraneous spending). The book goes into great detail on how to balance debt reduction with maintaining financial flexibility, maintaining good FICO scores, etc. But far too many people who are deeply in debt (and seeking help from books like this) have a spending habit that needs more drastic surgery than this book gives. So, I would say this book gives outstanding advice, but only for a subset of the public who have the right discipline. For many folks, the more drastic "surgery" advocated by cheerleaders like Dave Ramsey will be more effective.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough unbaised advice.......2006-02-03

I have known Liz Weston for years as a journalist and have always found her to be very thorough and no-nonsense. This book is no exception. It's well researched with unbaised and sensible strategies for dealing with debt. I had the opportunity to interview Liz on my internet radio show EverydayWealthRadio recently about the book and she clearly has great advice on this topic. She addresses things like 401k loan, pros and cons of different types of debt, and the common questions I hear from consumers,
