5 out of 5 stars Don't go into court without this!.......2007-09-01

As a Pro Se Petitioner, I have found this book to be incredibly helpful! It explains all of the ins and outs of trial, how to organize a trial notebook, how to arrange your questioning, and how to cross examine among many other important facts. This book contains the inforation that lawyers know, that we need to know, but have not gone to many years of school. It is written in plain English, and is a MUST for anyone looking to go into or try to avoid going to trial!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic reference for the layperson.......2007-04-17

I was thoroughly impressed how well written and easy to understand this book is. Each step is completely explained, referenced and many documents have examples printed right in the book. There are great tips and tricks to deal with opposing counsel as well as warnings for what type of red flags and tricks to watch for from the other side. This book is an asset for the novice to the more experienced pro se litigator. Definitely a Five Star book.

5 out of 5 stars The best friend for pro se litigants in the strange land of law........2006-07-14

This is one of the best books I have read and enjoyed about pro se litigation. The large font, great white space, and properly displayed summary tables render the book easy to endure and utilize. The authors offer many proverbs and examples for lay people that alleviate the harshness of legal lingo. Moreover, they even translate the formal and non-technical English words into layman's language. For example, words such as "sanction, impeach, strike, motion, cross, re-cross, direct, and re-direct" are simplified to common readers to mean "punish, discredit, delete, request, and questioning of witnesses in different setting".

The authors realize the hardship of hiring a good and trustworthy lawyer and assist the readers in understanding their rights for self-representation. Not only you will learn how not to be a fool pro se, but also how to expose the foolishness of ill-prepared lawyers and how to feel home among busy birds of a feather different from yours.

The book dissects the court room like an anatomy specimen and shows the reader where everyone belongs. (In one of the traffic violation I attended, a defendant brought his 5-year old son to the courtroom, was not able to control his running between the judge's legs and messing up stacks of papers on the reporter's desk.) This book will familiarize you with the territory such that you will avoid acting childishly. Aside from running between the judge's legs, the pro se will learn how to seek permission to approach a witness, to admit exhibits, to strike evidence, and so on.

The paper work phase is explained in great details to remove the anxiety of the long and contentious process that follows. It offers assurance that anxiety and fear are natural reaction to performing on a stage of adversarial nature. Actors, teachers, lawyers go through what a pro se litigant goes through in laboring to defend his or her arguments. It offers forms for different filing purposes, describes exhibits and trial notebook, and explains how to respond to and make objections.

The trial dissection is also magnificent in describing in details the phases of paper work filing, subject and personal jurisdiction, statute of limitation, and the development of the trial process from filling answers, motions, pretrial material, discovery, and evidentiary issue.

The trial process is well described as well to entail opening statement, direct and cross examination, closing statement. It is preceded with extensive elaboration on how settlement, aberration, and mediation most of times cut the process short of a trial.

The elaborate description of informal and formal discovery process is very helpful to pro se litigants since it saves the exuberant amount of money spent on lawyers to gather documents, depose witness, and disclose evidence. The thorough details of the techniques of discovery are presented in bulleted subsections, each with its advantages and disadvantages.

The book extends it discussion to post-trail phases of appeals and judgment. It then delves into specialized areas such as divorce and bankruptcy. The coherence of the book topics serves the readers a great deal in enabling pro se to focus on pertinent legal claims, their elements, the facts that address each element, and the evidence required to prove the facts.

Three trivial problems are noticeable. One, pages are numbered according to chapters which forces the reader to remember two instead of one number when trying to memorize latest page read. Two, referencing to legal coach is excessively used while the book is intended to self-represented parties. Three, excessive branching of references for further reading are everywhere despite the good 24 healthy chapters of the book.

Very helpful, but I'm not too sure how up to date the information is. Although this book has some excellent sample activities, a much more succinct (and less expensive) work is "So, You Want to Become a National Board Certified Teacher?" (2006 edition).

Candidates might want to also sneak a peek at "Mentoring the NBPTS Candidate". While intended for mentors, NBPTS candidates may find some very helpful information in those pages also.

The author gives sample answers to prompts and allows you to see at least what kind of information you need to be including. When I started my entries I had no idea of how to start because they give you no specific directions. This book does! It is a must have!!

Book Description

By analyzing the present-day church and examining societal trends, Carl George presents a model that can mobilize your church for outreach.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Important Model for Church Growth and Vitality.......2001-01-25

Carl George wrote this book some time ago, but even today, it is a highly relevant and important book for many of today's churches. The concept of small groups is not exactly a new concept. Many churches have encouraged this for years. But few churches even now have turned the concept of small groups into a far reaching and fundamental tool of ministry, outreach, and caring that permeates the entire church mission. Even today, small groups tend to be a "back burner" concept among many churches.

This book tries to draw a direct relationship between small group ministry and church size. The theory is that a church can grow only so big and reach only so many people absent a vital and large emphasis on small groups. George cites a few megachurches as examples of the kind of ongoing growth and changed lives that occur when the church embraces small groups not with a recreational commitment, but with the kind of commitment that comes when something is considered a primary mission of the church.

The small group model for church growth is a model that works, not because George says so, but because several churches who have embraced this model are growing beyond many of the ceilings that the vast majority of churches who don't embrace this model can't seem to break through. Getting their people into small groups, when emphasized and encouraged, allows bigger churches to continue ministering to people and meeting their needs by allowing the congregation to minister to itself and not overtax the staff. This accomplishes the goal of the church not having to build up a huge staff of paid people to try and meet the needs of a big congregation. Therefore, allowing church funds to be spent not on an increased staff, but on more relevant activities that are more in line with the mission that God has imparted on the particular church. Further, small group multiplication allows the church to continue to grow and reach new people in the community in ways that are non threatening.

I did not give the book 5 stars only because the book does not appear to spend a lot of time discussing how a church can really establish a vital small group ministry and structure their staff in an effective way to cultivate it. Too often, growing churches want to do good things, but do not put the kind of infrastructure in place, whether people or facilities, to administer the programs with excellence. It's the classic problem of biting off more than we can chew. The motivations of the church are in the right place in these instances, but without a clear plan in place for administering a major small group ministry, George provides an incomplete strategy for implementing this approach. This may sound like a minor point, but it isn't. Ministries that are not undertaken with excellence are ministries that fail to fully fulfill the purpose for which the ministry was created. Having an administrative infrastructure in place that effectively manages a big small group ministry while also being an infrastructure that is frugal relative to church budgets is clearly one aspect of establishing a ministry with excellence. And this aspect is not easily addressable and thus, represents a significant challenge to George's model. It is solvable I believe, but George should have addressed this in more detail, in my view.

But clearly, George has hit on something that every church can benefit from if implemented correctly. At its core, Christianity needs to be about people. And in order to meet people's needs and transform people into fully devoted disciples of Christ, the church must place just as much a priority on meeting people's needs and providing care and support as it does on spreading the Gospel message. In fact, I would argue that those two things go hand in hand, and both are strengthened by the other. Having an active small group ministry that looks for small group solutions for a whole array of congregational concerns and interests is a proven model for church growth and evangelism, and something George describes very well. A good book, a good pastoral resource.

5 out of 5 stars Best reason for small groups.......2000-03-13

While some of the diagrams leave you wanting and wondering, the heart of the book solidifies the need for small groups. Especially in a era when there is so much demand on our time and so much stress in our lives. When George related the story of Jethro and his council to Moses, I knew our church HAD to get behind small groups in a big way. George shows how small groups are the key to a church family and how they are the true ministry of the church.

5 out of 5 stars Shows the way for vital churches in the 21st Century.......1999-09-13

Carl George's "Prepare Your Church for the Future" is a must-read for those who desire to approach ministry in fresh ways in the coming years. His emphasis on the keys for developing groups for meaningful relationships and growth are second to none!

5 out of 5 stars Must-read book for churches that want to grow........1998-11-18

Many churches have adopted small group ministry as a way to connect Christians and to provide support and growth for their members. George shows how small groups can become an engine for evangelism and leadership development and enable churches to break through barriers to growth. Essential reading for any church wanting to grow -- in both numbers and depth. I also recommend the follow-up book by George, "The Coming Church Revolution," which goes into greater depth and detail and provides examples of many churches from several denominations that have successfully used this model.

Book Description

As college deans and faculty are well aware, cheating and plagiarism have become an epidemic. Some students deliberately download papers, while others break rules they simply don't understand. Unfortunately, there have been no reliable guides to aid students, faculty, and teaching assistants in navigating these challenging issues. Now, there's help. Charles Lipson, a distinguished scholar and teacher who has coached thousands of students in the basics of honest work, provides clear, accessible, and often humorous advice on all aspects of college studies, from papers and exams to study groups and labs.

In the first part of the book, Lipson outlines three core principles of academic honesty and explores how these principles inform all aspects of college work. He discusses plagiarism in detail, outlining an ingenious note-taking system and offering guidelines for quoting and paraphrasing. Careful attention is paid to online research, including the perils of "dragging and dropping" text without proper citation. These chapters include numerous tips, all highlighted for students, on how to work honestly and study effectively.

The second part of the book gives a full account of citation styles in the humanities, social sciences, and physical and biological sciences, as well as in pre-professional studies. Filled with examples, these chapters show students exactly how to cite books, journals, edited volumes, Web sites, online publications, and much more—in every citation style imaginable.

By clearly communicating the basic principles of academic honesty and exploring these principles in action, Doing Honest Work in College promotes genuine learning and academic success. This must-have reference empowers faculty and students to address questions about academic honesty before problems arise. It will be the book students turn to for advice from their first class to their final exam.

4 out of 5 stars An opportunity to shift hackneyed conversations about plagiarism.......2007-08-16

I require this book of my university writing students and recommend it to others. Like Rayne's students, mine find the author's tone off putting at times. Tone aside, students have told me they find the information itself accessible and valuable for the short (i.e., my class) and long term (i.e., their other courses), prompting me to keep this book on my syllabus each term.

Many of my students confide they've been taught the MLA citation as the best--or only--citation style for ALL of their papers. Therefore, to learn about a range of citation styles and to have a brief introduction to each has helped my students understand that ACADEMIA--not just English teachers--values and encourages writers to credit their sources. My science and engineering students have been particularly vocal in saying the book's discussions beyond MLA and APA citations help them feel validated in the writing they produce.

While my students like the fact that they now have one book that contains a snapshot of eight citation styles, I like that the book starts from the point that all writers in the academy cite sources as a way of entering, building upon, and continuing the conversations of our respective fields. Consequently, as Rayne observes, the book is not about punishment (as so many discussions on citations are or become); rather, it's a call for students to cite their sources in order to engage authentically in the work of the academy.

Certainly there are limits to the book (e.g., citation samples, being brief, oversimplify some styles), but DOING HONEST WORK offers a springboard for further conversations and/or readings about one of the most fundamental principles of academic work.

4 out of 5 stars No wagging fingers--just practical talk.......2006-09-01

I required this of my first-year college writing students. Some were a little put off by the repetition and the "I'm just one of you" tone of the author, but most felt the information was valuable, and, for some, it was brand new. It's one of the few books that speaks to plagiarism in terms of the value of honesty instead of the threat of punishment. I'm glad my students have it, and I'm encouraging them to hold on to it for its help with other courses, since it gives great info about study groups, lab work, take-home exams, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Great aid for professor.......2005-08-08

This book is great guidance for any professor who wants to educate, warn or correct students in their academic behavior. I plan to list the book as recommended reading in all my classes this fall. Every college library should have a copy.

Even ethically-challenged students will be able to understand the clear and easy-to-read explanations of academic honesty.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer for College Freshman.......2004-12-01

I teach online college freshman level in the social sciences, and often struggle with the issue of plagiarism and lack of knowledge of the student upon entering college of the various academic research writing styles. I am also doing post graduate work in the education field and am currently involved in a research project on this problem in education. I found the book a valuable resource, and easy to understand. The book gives a basic broad view of the different styles of writing for the various disciplines, as well as basic information on proper citations and the meaning of plagiarism. Great book for a college freshman just starting out, or academic that works with various styles of writing.

5 out of 5 stars All You'll Need.......2004-11-08

I cannot say enough about how invaluable this book is! As a high school English teacher, I have recommended this book to students and colleagues alike. It is a practical, clear, and comprehensive look at citation from a number of different styles. Not only do I use it in my classroom, but I have also shared it with members of my graduate courses. Everyone can benefit from some portion of the book; I have had it out on display in my classroom for the past week and have had numerous students pick it up and say things like "Wow, this actually makes it [citation] so much easier." A handful of them have actually gone out and purchased the book as well- that in itself speaks volumes!

5 out of 5 stars You CAN represent yourself in court!.......2007-02-20

I used a few books including this one and You Don't Need a Lawyer. I did represent myself in court and was proud of that. If you have logical mind and believe in what you are doing you can win in court without expensive lawyer.

5 out of 5 stars THANKS NOLO for putting this book out! JUST what I needed!.......2005-10-25

I LOVE this book! Very thorough, endless hints and tips. I am no longer afraid or to bring my own case and feel informed and competent. This book tells you with frank honesty what to expect, where you may encounter trouble and helps you handle almost any situation. I recommend it to EVERYONE.

5 out of 5 stars Legal Information You Can Bank On!.......2004-07-22

In my capacity of monitoring the information desk for Chicago's main library, the Harold Washington Library, I come in contact with numerous people who are embroiled in legal battles and who need some accurate guidance in plain English. This book, "Represent Yourself In Court," is one of the books I recommend the most for those who have minor legal issues and can't afford (or choose not) to hire an attorney. It walks you through a whole range of legal proceedings from start to finish. It also presents questions for you to ponder before you decide to initiate legal action. It's written for civil litigation, not criminal. It also gives information about settling a matter, and gives pointers on how to decide if yu need professional help.

One woman who I'd recommended the book to used it to guide her through the divorce proceedings pertaining to her 20-year marriage. The next time she saw me, she couldn't thank me enough for recommending the book. She talked about how the chapter dealing with depositions saved her hundreds of dollars. She also told me that since then one of the authors, Paul Bergman, has put out another book, "Nolo's Deposition Handbook," and she has found it equally useful. I decided to check that book out too, to see if it's another resource I could recommend to folk. It is! I'm equally impressed with its thoroughness and the soundness of its information. In fact, so much so that I've also written a review for it on Amazon's web site. So if your matter involves giving a deposition, also check out my review of that book.

4 out of 5 stars A Good, but necessarily limited, intro to the legal system.......2003-06-01

Overall, I'd give this a positive rating, but since it's written for all 50 states, it is so broad in its coverage that it makes it difficult to learn about how to pursue your lawsuit in your particular state.

I'd suggest reading this book and trying to fill out forms as you go. Pick up the 'local rules' from your own court, and study them for what Bergman doesn't tell you.

One thing I will say, though, is that one bit of advice was invaluable...on visiting the court before your motion or case is heard. I did this, and it took a lot of the mystery out of the whole process.

By doing this, by the way, I was completely surprised that (in the motion hearings) that most of what took place was pretty much on a par with small claims court, with a few legal latin phrases peppering the give-and-take. Most of the motions I heard consisted of two things: Why one or the other party failed to meet deadlines, and trying to get the other guy's case thrown out before everyone went to trial.

One other thing that was also surprising...the opposing lawyers where pretty buddy-buddy with each other. I guess the hostility and animosity that one would associate with a lawsuit pretty much reside only in the parties to the suit themselves.

In my appearance, I took it very cool and did not act emotional at all. Let's face it...the court doesn't want to hear it. They just want to get done so they can go to lunch.

5 out of 5 stars Represent Yourself in Court.......2003-01-26

This book gives an understandable rendition of the various legal
procedures involved in bringing a major lawsuit into the Court
system. It is most helpful in assisting litigants with case
organization and presentation. The work explains how to document
a case throughout the various phases of a lawsuit with particular
emphasis on presentation of exhibits for trial. The work is
written in a belles lettres style. It could be read by anyone
wanting to understand the litigation process, as well as
law students taking courses in Civil Litigation. The book could
be useful in organizing a case so that a lawyer could pick it
up at a later time. Very often, the details of a claim may not
be fully known until the deposition process has been completed.
I would supplement this book with the purchase of a Civil
Procedure book if the intention is to complete the entire process
right through to trial. This work focuses on the documentation
you will need to develop in order to prove a case at trial.
The work has a good coverage of negotiation strategies.
Ultimately, it is in your interest to deal with a lawyer during
a formal negotiation in order to ascertain that you've secured
a fair deal.It pays to become familiar with a local legal
library as a supplement to this text. In addition, you should
utilize the internet in order to review similar cases
in the various Court jurisdictions relating to your case.
Sometimes it pays to talk to a lawyer who has completed a similar
case in order to gain perspective on the intricacies of the
whole process. This text gives you a good start.
It would be most helpful in organizing the type of case
that only develops after the deposition process is complete.
Early in the litigation, you should do some research in order
to identify cases similar to yours that have been decided.
The past precedent or stare decisis is very critical to
presenting a claim because it encapsules your case into
a similar fact pattern consistent with other cases that have
been decided by the Courts. It is to your benefit to do legal
research in identifying similar cases to your own either by
going into the legal libraries yourself, researching the
internet or paying a small fee for a legal research firm
to identify similar cases as the one you are filing.

Book Description

Getting a good score on the Miller Analogies Test is often a prerequisite for academic postgraduate study, or for high-level placement in some prominent business firms. It is a 100-question, 50-minute exam that presents verbal analogies in the form of multiple-choice questions in a way that measures both the test taker's analytical skills and his or her general knowledge of history, culture, and world events. This newly updated manual presents a diagnostic pretest and 10 complete practice MAT exams with answers explained plus approximately 1100 additional practice questions with answers. There is also extensive advice on solving analogy problems, short-entry definitions of terms that often appear on the MAT, and tips on coping with test anxiety.

This book proved to be an excellent study guide to help prepare for the MAT's. The test questions along with Historical, Literature and Grammar reviews helped me to prepare for the MAT.

Excellent book. Easy to use. Helps prepare to take the test.

5 out of 5 stars Sternberg's book worked for me!.......2006-11-28

In early 1990, I used Sternberg's book to prepare for the Miller's Analogy Test. The most valuable part of my effort was taking all ten tests using a stop watch. In February of 1990, I took the test at Syracuse University in New York and I finished the test in just half the allowed time. My score was 98 out of a 100. I repeat that the book worked for me. It might work for you too! However, there are some caveats that I'm offering. The MAT's analogies presuppose a reasonable knowledge of our culture at some level and they cover many areas of knowledge. Unless you have years to spend boning up on them, it's a waste of time making a short term effort unless you have a photographic memory. I don't have that kind of memory and I was not a liberal arts major in college but I had enough general knowledge to cope with the test using the information provided in the test questions. When I took the exam, there were a few people in the room who spoke about their intensive test preparation. Not only did they have trouble finishing the test in the allowed time but they were clearly confused by it. The best way to prepare for the test using whatever knowledge you have is to do the practice tests with a clock. Don't dwell upon questions that trouble you. Move on and do quickly the analogies you understand. When you're done, return to the undone questions and try them again but still be wary of spending too much time on a single question. Rule one here is to actually do tests. As stock market buffs often say (ala Warren B.), rule two is not to forget rule 1. Also remember that you don't have to ace this test. A score of 66% will get you into MENSA. Finally I believe that a review of the book by Sternberg or any other prep manual is only valid if the review author has actually taken the test.

3 out of 5 stars Good tests, Sloppy Study Tips.......2006-09-27

There are two parts of this book, one entirely dissapointing, the other only slightly so.

The test prep advice is almost entirely unhelpful and unoriginal. I flagged three pages with good advice on them, but most of the advice is not worth reading.

The book does include a pretest and 10 practice tests, plus good vocab lists. The experience of taking and grading the tests in this book has definitely helped me prep for the test. However, the answer 'explanations' given after each test have virtually no explanatory power. I have had to look up explanation myself to almost every question I answered wrong.

Also there are a few typos and some plain wrong answers given as right that make it hard to have faith in this book.

I haven't taken the real test yet, and I'll update this review when I do to see if the guide was actually helpful. But I suggest buying another book with 10 practice tests, and maybe with better test prep advice.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2005-09-08

I used this guide exclusively to prepare for the MAT and I placed in the 99th percentile!! As a previous reveiwer stated, there isn't much evidence that I'm a genius and I haven't been a college student in many years so I have to credit this guide. I took each of the practice tests in the book and found that the questions on my MAT were very similar...no surprises, no curveballs. Don't forget to brush up on simple geometry, roman numerals, gods and godesses, negative exponents, and famous historical philosophers, scientists, etc. Good luck!

re If you are a Bencifiary, Executor of a trust, and a Trustee, or, any combination thereof.

THIS BOOK WILL SAVE YOU ALOT OF FRUSTRATION, time, and money with attorneys. Because this book, tells you what they "Attorney's" ( and in this case I mean 'ALL' Attorney's) won't tell you. It also gives good references to follow up resources.

Get a current "Compact Edition of Trust Law" for your state Probate, at the same time you get this book. It will be the best way to know your states probate proceedings specifics.

If you are hesitant to spend money for this book, just do a Search Inside, and go to Chapter 3, Page 2-4, Be Aware of Covetous Attorneys. <--- Read this twice. YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS.

You need to know why attorney's are creating a situation to support coaxing you to believe, you need a Trust Officer, Co-Trustee.

This book will tell you, that attorneys' know the statue allows them to receive payment of 2% of the trust/estate every year when it is over 1 million dollars.

This book will tell you, having an outside trust accountant is not infallible. And YOU, as Trustee, are still held accountable, if your co-trustee, or trust official handling the court accounting, or finances, invesments, or yearly accounting makes errors, or absconds with funds.

Often, attorney's will look for the smallest reason to talk trustees in to hiring a professional co-trustee/trust official, and to bring this suggestion before guardianship court to fill their bank accounts, yet they will tell you this is the only way to satisfy your disgruntled relatives. All the while
they are attached to all the management of the trust gonig forward.

Because of disgruntled relatives, you will really need to contact your state bar association and Read the Compact Edition of Trust Law, like you breathe air .... daily.

FINALLY if you are a visual person, you will want to check out the contents and several pages of your interests of the following booK, as it is equally a TEN STAR BOOK ----> The Trustee's Guide An Essential Handbook for Trustees, Beneficiaries, and Advisors (Paperback) by Howard I. Gross (Author)

You need to remember the Attorney is not the boss of your relatives Trust.

If you are the Trustee, you need to let acquisitive attorney's know you are not willing to expense the estate friviously and understand, you and you alone are accountable, without throughly exploring the disadvantages before giving a written approval.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful Resource .......2007-10-09

I purchased this book in April in preparation for an early August GRE. The Barron's book was my main source of preparation. I created a study schedule up to the date of the test, based on the material in this book. I did EVERY practice exercise. The book is very thorough. I found all sections to be helpful. My personal weakness was/is Math so I did get the Ultimate Math Refresher the last 2 1/2 weeks before the test. I highly recommend that also. I also purchased the GRE Official Guide so I could get some extra Math practice in. I worked with the GRE Powerprep as well. Still, Barron's was my primary source. The Barron's writing section was very helpful in my opinion, but writing is probably one of my better suits. If it's not yours, you may want to try a supplement to the Barron's book. I DID study all 50 of the vocab. lists in the Barron's book. I'd say that's pretty important. So, how did I do on the exam? I scored 670 in Math, 700 in Verbal, and 5.5 on the writing. Good luck to you!

3 out of 5 stars Pretty comprehensive review.......2007-10-04

I couldn't decide between this book and the Princeton Review book (Cracking the GRE, 2007 Edition (Graduate Test Prep)), so I ended up buying & using both. Clearly, Barron's has an extensive vocabulary list. I must admit that, in the end, I wasn't able to study all the words (there's so many!), but there's a high-frequency word list that helps you prioritize which words you should be sure to learn. In comparison to the PR book, Barron's had a lot more exercises; there's a group of exercises at the end of each section. That gave me a lot of practice in applying concepts that I had just reviewed. Also, the book has 5 model tests, which means you have a lot of chances to practice. However, since these are paper-based tests, they're different from the CAT test that you'll actually be taking, and they don't really reflect what your actual scores will be. The CD that comes with this edition of the book simply didn't compare to the online supplement to the PR book. Of interest on the CD are a diagnostic test and a CAT practice test. However, the practice test on the CD recycles all the questions you see in the 5 tests in the book. I took all the tests in the book before I took the one on the CD, and let's just say my score was a little higher than expected because I had remembered the answers to a lot of the questions. I think Barron's gave a pretty good review of the material that shows up on the GRE, but I'd recommend the PR book if you want to get a better idea of how you'll actually do on the GRE.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent GRE prep.. with a couple of caveats.......2007-09-28

I tend to over-research everything, so before embarking on my GRE prep I spent the better part of a day in my neighborhood B&N looking at the plethora (that's a GRE word right there) of prep books available for purchase. My eventual conclusion was that Barron's approach appears to differ substantially from all the other guides, in that it does not place much emphasis on "hacking" the GRE. Instead, it gives you well-thought out guidance and practice opportunities, all with the bare minimum of fluff (I am looking at you, Kaplan). In any case, I gradually became convinced that Barron's would be best suited for my studying style and goals, and it was therefore the only guide that I've used in the course of my GRE prep, along with some freely available ETS materials that I'll touch on in a bit.

So, a month later, with the test finally behind me and having scored in the high 700s on both sections, I still feel that Barron's is a quality product. Firstly, the word lists are excellent; there were at least 3 words on the actual test that I wouldn't have known if it wasn't for Barron's "Essential" list. The ginormous 3500 word list is also quite useful, although I found the word selection to be a little arbitrary -- there are some weirdly specialized terms (tessellated?), and a couple of words felt antiquated (benison? really now). I did like how Barron's went the extra mile with the example sentences -- some were unexpectedly clever and good for a chuckle. Having said that, Barron's also appears to place too much importance on distinguishing fine shades of meaning -- some of the analogies are almost guaranteed to give you a headache, and I thought that the Powerprep and the real GRE were considerably less anal-retentive on that front. Also, the Analytical Writing section is quite short; it won't help you much if your writing skills aren't already reasonably up to par. On the plus side, it has some valuable tips about adapting your writing to the GRE format; the information about structuring your essay was well thought out and matched up with the guidelines on the ETS website. So kudos on the verbal -- the actual test held no surprises on that front, with the level of question difficulty about equal to that of Barron's.

Now on to the math, which is a bit of a mixed bag. On the positive side, the math review is excellent, takes a while to get through, and has some pretty good exercises that get the brain cells firing. In fact, there were a couple of questions on the actual exam that contained "traps" that I was able to recognize quickly due to having seen them in Barron's earlier. However, the test experience on the Q section was very different from Barron's; the time constraints were intense, after the first few questions the level of difficulty increased substantially past anything I've seen in the book, and didn't let up until the very end. I think this may also be why reviewers tend to disagree about whether or not the actual test is more difficult than the material contained in the book. This is probably due to the way the CAT works; it'll give you questions tailored to your level of knowledge. Thus, it's possible that some reviewers had questions that were easier than the book, and some whose questions were more difficult. Having said that, my GRE score were higher on the actual exam than on any of the practice tests from Barron's..

Impressively, the book appears to be almost completely error free. My copy had some typesetting issues with a couple of Quantitative Comparison questions on the sample tests (one or both of the values were missing), but that wasn't overly bothersome. Unfortunately, the Barron's CD is essentially worthless -- it repeats questions from the paper exams, and the actual test experience has a much different feel. Make sure to download the PowerPrep software from the ETS website, but be careful -- if you are taking a PowerPrep practice test at night and your computer's clock rolls over to 12:00am, the software will inform you that you have just ran out of time and kick you out of your current section.

Anyway, that's my take -- hope someone finds this useful..

5 out of 5 stars Barrons is what you need.......2007-09-25

First off let me say I am not good in math and I had not heard ALOT of these words prior to ordering this book. After taking the exam Barrons certainly helped alot because all the words I ever encountered on any practice test were in this book. I used this book, GRE Bible, Powerpre, and the Ultimate Math Refresher. This book teaches you the mechanics of the GRE and offers an abundance of words. I went through the most frequent word list, made flash cards of those words, and made flash cards of any word I encountered on any other practice exam. Instead of reading barrons all night long I just took practice test after practice test which allowed me to get in the flow of taking the exam. The reading comprehension was a bit dense at first but after reading several passages I get use to it. The key is to take multiple tests. GRE bible has 15 tests. Keep taking tests and using this book.

BEWARE. POWERPREP is the only software that gives scores close to the actual GRE exam. GRE Bible is WAYYYYY harder than the actual exam.

4 out of 5 stars Too much great info!.......2007-09-03

I bought this book after reading all the reviews on Amazon. And yes, the 3000 word list is a bit daunting, but I focused my attention on the ones that they hi-lighted as being the high-frequency words to appear on the GRE. That helped ease the anxiety of having to learn 3000 vocab words. I loved that Barron's provided example sentences following their definitions b/c it helped jog my memory as I was studying. Compared to Kaplan, I also loved Barron's approach to the analytical writing portion...it's very straightforward and helpful in the way they instruct you to formulate your essays. I scored pretty high marks on that portion and I primarily used the tips provided by Barron's. As for the math portion, well, I'm entering a social science field, so I just glazed over that part. Overall, I would recommend coupling this purchase with the Princeton GRE prep b/c both offer unique techniques to tackling the GRE.
