5 out of 5 stars great office companion.......2007-07-15

this is not hard core yoga, but really who can do that at work anyway? this book has nice, effective yoga moves that can be done at work without changing clothes or drawing alot of attention to yourself. the book is small but hardcover, i have mine on my desk and it always grabs peoples attention. i've reached for this in stressful moments and was glad i had it. the book would make a nice gife. i also have the lovers' yoga and i really, really like that one!

5 out of 5 stars Office therapy.......2007-04-12

When do you need this book ? Got buried by hundreds of unread e-mails and a project deliverable deadline closing fast.
Just one simple pose, fold yourself down, you will feel "hope". That ! Is the greatest benefit from this book.
It works for me and my co-workers, it probably can work for you as well, as long as you mind your physical limitation, don't push too much or get hurt.

5 out of 5 stars Steve.......2007-01-04

Office Yoga is a wonderful book for just about anyone. If you sit at a desk, at home in front of the TV or fly I recommend this book to stretch your muscles and mind. The simple to follow techniques can be done anywhere and in a short period of time, and what a difference they make. I carry this book with me when I travel...its like having your own private yoga instructor!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for folks who spend time at their desks.......2002-09-23

Sometimes, I'll come across a little book that will
surprise you . . . such was the case with OFFICE YOGA by
Darrin Zeer . . . though only 93 pages (in a smallish 4.5 x 6
binding), it nevertheless contained many useful techniques that
make it the perfect desk accessory for busy professionals.

I also liked the accompanying illustrations by Michael
Klein . . . they made it easy to follow Zeer's advice.

Among the ideas that caught my attention were the following:
* Red Light Rejuvenation

This also works on planes and trains.

Sit back, relax, and gently roll your head in circles.

Shrug your shoulders up and down, breathing in rhythm as you do.

Become on with the traffic flow.

* Antidote for road rage

Stop-and-go traffic make you nuts? Loosen up your windpipes
and sing your favorite song. Imitate an opera singer and
come from your belly with the sound.

* E-mail meditation

While you are reading your e-mail, remember to breathe slowly
and focus your attention on your breath. Make the out-breath
two times longer than the in-breath. This will immediately calm you.

4 out of 5 stars You can do Yoga at work.......2002-02-05

This book is a great light introduction to Yoga. It breaks up activities for morning, work and after work. The work activities are not to difficult, time consuming or attention getting.

Product Description

If you feel the need to learn meditation but you find that the idea of finding 30 or 40 minutes to meditate is itself stressful, this CD is for you. Short "power meditations" such as these - between three and nine minutes in length - can be highly beneficial for busy people. Each practice teaches a specific and powerful technique for quickly transforming the mind, encouraging the rapid development of calmness, spaciousness, and relaxation. Additionally, by practicing these meditations you'll learn attitudes and skills that can be used throughout the day in any activity you're involved in, bringing more mindfulness and creativity into daily life. You'll notice benefits from repeated practice, and although daily practice is ideal, whatever you can manage will be of benefit. Doing even a small amount of meditation is better than doing none.

5 out of 5 stars Meditation for Busy 21st Century Americans.......2007-01-26

Who has time to meditate?

I thought I didn't until I bought this CD, along with Bodhipaksa's Guided Meditations for Stress Reduction. To tell you the truth, I listen to this CD more than the other. I bought both CDs for stress reduction but can only carve out small pockets of time that the meditations on this Guided Meditations for Busy People CD can fill.

Some meditations suit me better than others. I have meditated off and on for years and my practice is geared more toward breath meditation. So those meditations that move in that direction work well for my breathing meditation bias. There are others that seem to have a slight "New Age" bent to them, however within the meditation itself, Bodhipaksa grounds the technique in the psychology of the subconscious, making it believable.

His voice is warm and whispery, his delivery is relaxed and slow paced, and his Scottish accent is unobtrusive and unique, at once. This combination is quite conducive to turning quiet meditations into valuable and well spent relaxation time. It is really quite remarkable that you can give these guided meditations 8 - 10 minutes of your time and become truly transformed from the high-stress person you were before you began listening. Even the 3 minute meditation at the end of the CD can produce amazing results in so short a time.

If you are looking for a way to a high payoff in relaxation and meditation for a small investment of time and effort, this is your relaxation/meditation medication. (I'm sorry to bring such a Western angled practicality to the subtle art of meditation, but such is the world and age in which we live).

5 out of 5 stars SW review.......2006-07-26

The CDs by Bodhipaksa are all good, his voice and manner are the most soothing I've found-and I've listened to lots of relaxation and meditation CDs. The Guided Meditations for Busy People CD is particularly useful, providing a way to create a quick mindfulness exercise when you haven't got a lot of time and may otherwise just skip it. It has encouraged me to stop for a moment during the day to restore calmness and peace and then get on with my busy schedule.

1 out of 5 stars Not at all what I thought ..........2006-04-11

I was very disappointed with this CD. The voice on the CD is distracting and I had a hard time understanding what was being said. The quality of sound on the CD was very poor. I had originally been very excited about this CD hoping that it would be relaxing and allow me to incorporate meditation into my workday like while on lunch or before my drive home ... but the words sound mumbled and after trying to listen to the CD several times, I gave up. I own several meditation CDs (some are spectacular and some are just ok) but this is the only one that I refuse to listen to again.

4 out of 5 stars Relaxing.......2006-02-23

This cd is exactly what it says it is. Meditaion for busy people. It really taught me to slow down and take some time for my self. In only about 20 minutes a day to relive stress.

5 out of 5 stars New to Meditation? Short on Time?.......2005-11-14

Anyone who is interested in trying meditation, but believes he/she does not have time should give this CD a try. The meditations are less then 10 minutes, but leave you with the sense that you have had a worthwhile practice. Meditation can provide you with great rewards, but you have to do it. More may be better, but some is definitely better than none.

Chapters are short. Nice read before bed. Good and thoughtful information. Worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Let There Be Peace.......2007-05-06

As a big believer in the need for personal peace to achieve our life purpose and a huge fan of Dr. Joan Borysenko's wisdom, I treasure this book!

Who among us in this high speed world isn't stressed by the environment in which we operate? And, who among us hasn't seen that our health and performance is better when we have inner peace? The challenge is to maintain our inner peace in this busy world. And, this book provides 52 thoughtful strategies and tactics for doing so.

Other reviewers have done a fine job of summarizing the contents of this gem. So instead of replicating that which they have summarized, let me share how I use this book. This is one of a handful of books that are my life guides (Cheryl Richardson's Unmistakable Touch of Grace, Judith Orloff's Positive Energy, Rick Warren's Purpose Driven Life). I reread these books frequently. Each also stands as a powerful tangible reminder of that which I believe I must practice. And, each has directly contributed to profound, positive changes in my life.

Beyond the personal benefits of this book, I am just enough of an idealist to believe that the best anecdote to the absence of peace in this world is for each of us to become more peaceful. To be a beacon of peace, and a practioner of kindness. This is as good a guidebook as you will find in setting forth a holistic approach to personal inner peace.

5 out of 5 stars A practical and life changing guide.......2005-05-30

Joan Borysenko's book, Inner Peace For Busy People, is an intelligently written, thought provoking read. She has demonstrated a deep understanding of those things that create familiar feelings of being overwhelmed and stressed to the max, and better yet, she gives practical solutions on ways to cope with that stress. The chapters in this book are short, one page or a little more. I found that the best way to read this book was to read a chapter a week and attempt to instill these lessons gradually. I can honestly say that it helped me to find new ways to relax and enjoy life, in spite of feeling at times as though I am "crazy busy" as the author discusses. I highly recommend this book. Unlike other self-help books, this guide doesn't overgeneralize, or have within it's pages unrealistic expectations that people would have difficulty implementing in their own lives. I found it to be incredibly practical and life-changing. I feel more rested and relaxed than I have in a very long time.

4 out of 5 stars An Application of "Peace in Every Step" (Thich Nhat Han).......2005-01-03

I had heard of this author for a long time and never read any of her work, so it was with careful reflection and consideration that I opened this book - attracted by the "Peace" and "Busy People" of the title.

The book is divided into 52 chapters (almost chapterettes) that include ideas for application of the principle discussed. Borysenko writes with a friend-like, compassionate voice as she guides the reader into a more centered life style.

The strategies discussed won't be new for those "experienced" at Personal Development AND the presentation makes it worth the investment. Each idea is narrowed down so succinctly and at the same time, the resulting "a-ha's" have the possibility of being substantial for those who take the principles and put them into practice.

I love how personable Joan comes across - in the section on perfectionism she describes how she still deals with it in her life through a story from a recent holiday dinner. Her chapter on "Breath" is so simple and yes, so powerful. These happen to be my favorites, but each lesson has gold to be mined.

For those folks who don't want to do the lessons "one-a-week", the book could easily be opened to any page, read and applied in that moment. The chapterettes can literally be read while waiting in line at the grocery store so there is no reason NOT to live more peacefully now -

There - see how effortless that was? *Smile* Reading and using this book is even easier than reading this review.... Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A Book for the Times.......2004-04-26

The events of the past few years have intensified our stress levels. The economy, the impact of 9/11, war, political rhetoric, unemployment, uncertainty, and just the pressure to do more with less has presented untold challenges. Everyone is so busy that balancing all the things on the to-do list has become nearly impossible. "Stop the merry-go-round! I want to get off!"

Is there no serenity anymore? Is there no way to get away from all the noise...even if that noise is in our heads? Reading this book, and thinking about its messages, will move you to a different space...if even for a brief time.

I started reading the 52 chapters at the rate of one each evening before bedtime. 52 chapters = 52 weeks. The more I got into the book, the more I accelerated my reading. I gained something from each brief chapter. Sometimes I learned a new idea, a new approach, a new way of looking at something. In other cases, I was gaining some new knowledge and insight-things I hadn't really thought about before.

Joan Borysenko is an expert in stress, spirituality, and mind-body connection. As a no-nonsense businessman, I've avoided the spirituality and mind-body stuff...until recently. Maybe I'm getting older; maybe I'm becoming more sensitive; maybe I can benefit from these approaches more than I thought I could. This Inner Peace book makes the process comfortable; I don't feel discomfort at all in reading it. No "woo-woo" alarms sounding.
This is good stuff.

You'll find Borysenko's writing easy to work with and absorb. Her personal stories engage the reader with the perspectives and advice she shares. Whether you read a chapter a week or read straight through, this is a book with value for you, personally.

5 out of 5 stars more than a beginners book.......2004-02-12

This book got me off my tush and back on my tush, so to speak. I've been meditating for a while but got out of the habit and forgot why it was important. This book really made a difference in my practice. I highly recommend it. Very readable, simple, but not simplistic. Good stuff for people who don't have time to read a million books on the subject.

4 out of 5 stars Great for beginners and procrastinators!.......2001-06-16

This is a wonderful book for those who feel "too rushed to meditate". It introduces a simple and easy method of meditation that is practical and inspiring... leaving no room for excuses! The author writes in a friendly and approachable style, and shows us how we can benefit in all kinds of brief and tiny ways, from even sporadic meditating. Exceptionally practical and inspiring - particularly good for novice meditators who would like to "kick start" their practice

    4 out of 5 stars Simple Guide.......2000-12-07

Meditation is new to me. I've been kind of doing my own thing and meditating the way I imagined you should do it without any direction (I had in mind that the point was to get away from direction!). I ran across this small book at Whole Foods and am happy to say that I would recommend it as a straightforward guide to what meditation is and different ways to practice it. Within the first 20 pages or so you'll get the basics and be ready to get going.

    Book Description

Offering serious information with a light touch, author Dawn Groves shows that by starting with a few simple changes, anyone can find a few minutes each day to take care of their bodies with exercise, sleep, and good food; their souls with meditation and prayer; and their minds with pursuits that challenge and please. Techniques such as “reframing” and “facts not stories” will help readers understand how to use thoughts to reinterpret events and issues for healthier emotional responses. She demonstrates how a few choices can change old, bad habits into new, good ones and how parents can not only cope with children but also help them become part of the lower-stress solution. Sections include What to Do in a Crisis (move your body, narrow your field, and take action), Mindfulness Tools, and Gratitude as a Resource.

This is a really cool book. It is easy but not stupid. Funny but not cliche. Not preachy. I bought it for some folks I manage and it helped them a lot. I heard Dawn speak and decided to buy a couple of her books. Both are great. I'm starting to meditate and thanks to Stress Reduction, I finally got what living stressed-out is doing to me. I want to keep my brain so I'm getting busy being less busy. Being smarter about it.

5 out of 5 stars From avoiding worries to accepting a complicated world.......2004-05-03

In Stress Reduction For Busy People, Dawn Groves showcases steps to alleviating stress and offers over-stressed folks a host of effective, "user friendly" coping mechanisms each of which require no extra daily effort to deploy. From avoiding worries to accepting a complicated world with the least stress, Stress Reduction For Busy People provides a strongly recommended guide to attitude enhancements which can in themselves reduce stress.

I thought i read all I wanted to about stress. then I heard her on the radio and liked her perspective. this book takes a different look at stress reduction. a bigger view. practical and almost poetic, all at the same time. you can read it in an hour. I bought some for office gifts. I especially liked chapter 4 about goalsetting. Dawn doesnt bog you down, but she is also motivating. I liked her other books in the busy people series, but this hits the nail on the head for me.

    Book Description

Simple strategies to reduce tension, minimize chronic stress, and quickly relax and unwind Nobody needs meditation more than people who are so busy that they have no time to meditate. These busy people may have tried meditation but given up, as it seems so difficult to integrate into a hectic lifestyle. Most traditional meditation techniques were developed thousands of years ago for people living a very different lifestyle than today. As Osho points out, few people today find it easy to just sit down and 'relax.' Silence at the Center of the Cyclone is filled with methods that can actually be integrated into everyday life. A morning commute becomes a centering exercise, and the street noises outside an apartment window in the city become an aid rather than a distraction to finding the silent space within. Both active and passive meditation techniques are covered, and the aim of all the techniques is to teach the practitioner how to find the stillness in the storm of everyday life. Many methods are specially designed to be integrated into the reader's everyday routines, so that they soon can tackle even the most hectic day with an attitude of relaxed calm and playfulness.

Once again, Osho offers pin-point insight which simultaneously arouses both discomfort and relief in the reader. This man could be the closest thing to a genuinely great mystic of our times. His expression continues to amaze in its fluid simplicity and profound revelation. All written with uncompromising compassion and unrelenting wisdom. A book for the times!

"Build the Life You Want and Still Have Time to Enjoy It!" was co-written by the father/daughter duo of Jim Claitor and Colleen Contreras. Both authors use their expertise to teach us "how to transform how you feel about yourself, your time and your life." In it we learn our personal styles and how to best work with them.

This book is divided into three main sections:
    1. How to make time your friend.
    2. Monitoring the E-Factor with six key steps.
    3. Clean Desk/Messy Desk - A Personalized Solution for Mastering Your Work Load. This includes key steps 7-9.

In the appendix, the book includes two valuable assessments. The first one is "The Personalized Style Assessment" and the second one is "The E-Factor Self-Assessment: Gauging the Impact of the Emotional Elements." I took these assessments first so that I knew where I fit in to the areas being addressed in the reading. There are two main types of people--creative types and linear types. Workable solutions are offered to help each type. A lot of the valuable information doesn't rely on a specific type of person; it applies to most of us. For example, if we get our emotional factors under control and use the organizational tools that work consistently, we all can succeed.

The authors incorporate humor and compassion into "Build the Life You Want." The problem is referred to as "The Monster." Fun yet meaningful cartoons are included to show the Monster in action and how it affects us. They also offer a lot of simple questions that promote self-reflection and offer steps to take that are manageable. Useful charts are included that help sum up what is being said.

I really found this book to be helpful. It made me aware of where a lot of my stress comes from and how I personally contribute to it. I am really good at getting caught up in my emotions and see how that slows me down. I also discovered that I am a "Sticky Tab" addict. That will be a hard addiction to conquer! I plan on discussing it on my next team retreat for work.

I think that "Building the Life You Want and Still Have Time to Enjoy It!" would make a great gift for someone that you know who is overwhelmed by having a lack of time. It is less than 150 pages so it will not take up too much of their time! It is also a great gift to give to oneself.

      Book Description

Inner Peace for Busy People, abridged from Joan Borysenko's best-selling book of the same name, is perfect for anyone who feels overwhelmed by the pressures of work, finances, children, and other modern-day stressors.

Slaves to phones, beepers, e-mails, faxes, piles of snail mail, congested traffic, and pushy telemarketers who call during dinner, many of us are trying to cope with the demands of family, finances, and career. As a result, we often feel squeezed out of our own lives, unable to extend sufficient kindness and care to our loved ones. The bottom line: We have very little peace of mind.

To help rectify this situation, Joan has created a wealth of inspirational yet practical information that will help you develop and maintain a sense of inner peace. Through stories encompassing spirituality, science, and humor, you'll be given easy-to-learn skills to help you change your attitude and regain a sense of balance and harmony!
