You'll remember the tips in this book, and they work too.......2007-09-23
I loved how the authors used their own "wow" experiences to relate to everyday situations.
The principles are easy to understand, and most importantly, easy to remember and follow. I tried out just one of the tips at first and found that I gained more composure in difficult situations, both at work and at home. The book is a quick read too.
I loaned my copy out to several friends (young professionals & 30-somethings) and they just kept passing it around to their friends. Apparently, everyone who read my copy went out and bought their own to keep. I finally got mine back.
An Executive Director at a private college even told me that she's recommending that "Leading From the Front" be added to the required reading list for a couple of courses.
A Great Book for Everyone!.......2007-06-26
I heard about this book from, "The Girls Guide to Being a Boss Without Being a Bitch" (which I also recommend). I decided to conduct one of the leadership workshops "Strive for Five" that Courtney and Angie recommend. You have a group of five women - in my case there are six of us - read the book and have weekly conference calls to discuss and share ideas. It has been such a valuable experience for all of us and we are enjoying the experience tremendously! I highly recommend this workshop idea to any and every manager out there. Not only that, but it really has great life lessons for everyone as we all need to be leaders in every aspect of our lives (not just at work).
Solid leadership basics, with good application in the workplace........2007-05-08
As female manager of people for the past 30 + years, I believe it is never too late to review basic leadership principles. While I feel I regularly subscribe to Angie and Courtney's thought processes, I enjoyed reading this book and was impressed with how it hit on parallels that apply to business and the armed forces. The only point I disagreed with was the negativity regarding crying at work. Many females (myself included) have cried at work when faced with frustrating circumstances. I tend to think this is not viewed as negative by others as it is simply a release of emotions that cannot always be controlled. At times, it is an outward communication of passion regarding the issue at hand. Other than this point, I thought the book was great and have recommended it to direct reports and peers - male and female!
Leadership for women.......2007-02-26
I bought this book for a number of women employees and managers that I work with - initial reactions were reserved but after reading the book all thanked me for the gift. The book does a great job of making it clear that women can lead just like men and can face and overcome the same challenges. The authors tell their personal stories and relate them to the leadership principles. In all, a great book for women 'hesitating' to lead or those seeking to understand the difference between management and leadership.
Amazing read -- relevant to every area of your life.......2006-05-05
I loved this book. I picked it up at the airport because I was curious of the subject matter -- I didn't know how Marine Corps leadership applied to my life. The book caught me from the beginning. I admire the authors' ability to tell their personal stories and relate them to the leadership principles. This in an important book for every woman on her quest for personal and professional achievement. Buy this book for your friends, family members and colleagues who want to be better leaders.

Tom.......2007-10-18
This product would be great if it wasn't based on 1994 data. A real waste of time and money.
A further education.......2007-01-11
About six months ago I was told that I had osteopenia and almost went into a panic. This book educated me on the possible ways that this condition could be reversed before more bone loss could occur. The book was clear and concise in discussing natural approaches, nutrition and scientific studies and how to apply them in everyday life to obtain possitive results.
Extremely helpful book.......2006-11-13
Even though this book was published in 1994 and thus doesn't include some of the latest research on osteoporosis, I found it incredibly helpful in understanding this disease as well as other health issues I face. Because it addresses other health issues, it helped me to understand how one problem may impact bone health, though it may not necessarily be the direct cause of osteoporosis. I was particularly impressed with the section on food allergies and want to try to implement his elimination diet in some way. I have long suspected that I have some other food allergies and wonder if they might be a contributing factor to the osteoporosis? Since I am also hypothyroid I appreciated his discussion of this issue, also the constant references to absorption and resorption.
It is one of the few health books I have read from cover to cover in the last few months. There is a lot of information in the book. I did occasionally find some of the explanations a bit technical for me, but it showed me that the writer has a good understanding of the topics he discusses, and I am sure they are helpful to other readers. I certainly would not let that stop me from highly recommending this book. I also appreciated his discussion of the medical profession's resistance to alternative healing.
Out of Date and Not Evidence Based.......2006-10-17
This book was published in 1995 (so of course was written in about 1993-94) so its information is very out of date. Since that time technology has introduced the BMD bone density scan, and the pharmaceutical industry has developed and promoted the use of bisphosphonates such as Fosamax and Evista. These two developments alone have rendered this book totally out of date and therefore not useful, in my opinion. Also, the information is not evidence-based, most of his recommendations are based on anecdotal and observed results, rather than on scientific studies. What he has to say is interesting, sometimes even fascinating, but is it accurate? For example, his recommendations on caffeine are based on the result of an "experiment" of giving three cups of coffee to five women. I don't consider that evidence-based medical protocol.
A vastly better source of information is The Myth of Osteoporosis, by Gillian Sanson, published in 2003. Her book is exhaustively researched, she cites medical and research studies involving hundreds and thousands of subjects, she covers the newest technologies and medications. The only thing missing from her book (because it was published a few years ago) is the very latest information about the potential dangers of Fosamax and the class-action lawsuits about the death of bone in the jaw that has caused people to have their jaws removed. She provides excellent suggestions for improving bone health, including exercise, dietary changes, supplements, and other ways to beat osteoporosis. She doesn't say that osteoporosis is a myth, she just debunks some of the myths surrounding this condition. I highly recommend this book over the Gaby book.
A treasure.......2005-09-04
This book is excellent and has surpassed my expectations of information, not only on osteoporosis, but many other aspects of health care. In fact, I am so pleased with it that I have bought a total of 4 copies, 3 being for my children. Two of them are in health care, and the third will also benefit immensely from the knowledge this book provides. Thank you, Dr. Gaby, for writing this book and sharing your knowledge and research with those of us with osteoporosis, and those who can head off its devastating effects.

Change the church rather than having the church change us? Please........2007-09-17
I will not waste a second reading this book and encourage other readers to do the same. Rather, they should take a cue from following book review from the latest issue of The Catholic Answer:
"The Catholic Priesthood and Women -- a Guide to the Teaching of the Church"
In 1994, Pope John Paul II formally declared that the Church - lacks the authority to admit women to priestly ordination. In his "Apostolic Letter on Ordination and Women," he was simply confirming a tradition that has been observed since apostolic times.
Yet debate over the matter continues in some Catholic circles, despite the Magisterium's insistence that the question has been settled.
For several years Sister Sara Butler, now a professor of dogmatic theology at St. Joseph's Seminary in New York, supported the movement for women's ordination. "At the time," she recalls, "I regarded this as a litmus test that would show whether, or not there could be real equality between women and men in the Church." She chaired a task force of the Catholic Theological Society of America in 1978 that reached the same conclusion.
Nevertheless, further study ultimately changed her mind. Her conclusions: "The feminist analysis of sexual complementarity and the theology of the ministerial priesthood" on which the report of the task force was based "were both seriously deficient."
Sister Butler's work has issued in "The Catholic Priesthood and Women" a carefully reasoned, lucidly written volume. It shows how the question of women's ordination is actually concerned not with sexual roles but with the constitution of the Church and the sacramentality of the priesthood.
After examining the historical development of doctrine about the equality of women and men, Sister Butler tackles the most common objections to the Church's teaching. She argues that "the admission of women to the Catholic priesthood cannot constitute an authentic development" of Catholic doctrine. Such a change would instead require "a radical reconstruction or even denial of fundamental Catholic doctrines."
This is essential reading for anyone with a serious interest in the subject.
Good Catholic girls.......2007-01-22
This book, and the glimpse it provides into the lives of these strong women, gives hope to the Catholic Church and to the world. It is the women who have challenged the church, called it to task for not being all that it must be, and who have yet remained faithful to the church -- or at least to the call of the Spirit -- who are and will be the agents of change that is so deperately needed in our world today.
A Church we could be proud of..........2006-05-12
Angela continues to exacerbate the the polemics within the Catholic Church today. Her vision of a Church, and that same vision shared by Joan Chittister, Frances Kissling, Rosemary Reuther, et. al. exists. It is called The Episcopal Church. One can find within the Episcopal Church a framework and a theology that shares elements of the Catholic Church, including The Eucharist. Why do these women insist on trying to make the Catholic Church over in their own image? If a woman, or a man for that matter, is having problem with authority and the way it is exercised by our Holy Father in Rome, then please have the conviction to leave the Church and enter into a Church that offers everything you desire. Or is it that, like Satan herself, these women cannot stand anything beautiful and seek to destroy that which is beautiful and has stood the test of time? The Catholic Church has always championed the role of women. It is also obvious that the sexual revolution of the 1960's and widespread use of contraception has done nothing for women as a whole except perpetuate the myth that women are men's playthings. we must remember that in the 1500's, when Martin Luther was arguing that women should be barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen, the Catholic Church supported women in the role of Queens, teachers, nurses, doctors, and spiritual guides, among other vocations. If one wants our Catholic Church to become Episcopalian, then please enter that same Church, for one obviously has no desire to submit oneself to the authority of the Holy Father, who was given his authority by Christ Himself. Without the male only priesthood, we would cease to be Catholic, and we would cease to have access to the Real Presence of Christ in our Holy Eucharist.
Raises Interesting Questions for Debate.......2006-01-23
In "Good Catholic Girls: How Women are Leading the Fight to Change the Church,"
Angela Bonavoglia provides profiles of many different women who are pushing to reform the Roman Catholic Church. Each of these women has her own agenda, her own "cause." None of them came to the decision to challenge the Church lightly. Rather, circumstances demanded it and they responded. Bonavoglia herself is one of the women pushing for change and this book is her contribution to that effort. She acknowledges that there are many Catholic women who see things differently and who support a "vision that maintains the Church's status quo." She states that "they are spirited and devoted, too. But they don't represent the future I want to see for the Church."
Bonavoglia provides a useful service in bringing a female face to the recent sex abuse scandal in the Church. While the media has focused primarily on the abuse of young boys, there are also many girls and women who have been taken advantage of by priests in power. In some cases, the abuse extended into the confessional, with women who worked up the courage to share their experience of abuse being told that *their* sins are forgiven! Obviously, there is no room for such abuse in the Church. Bonavoglia rightly condemns those in hte hierarchy who refused to take reports of abuse seriously and instead simply moved offenders from parish to parish. She makes the interesting contention that if women had a role in the hierarchy, they wouldn't have allowed this to happen - they would have protected the children.
Bonavoglia celebrates the work feminist theologians have contributed to the field. They have" reenvisioned God as not necessarily male or female, but male or female or neither." In addition, they have reexamined the role of women in the early Church. They have found "evidence that women in the early Christian Church were apostles, ministers, and deacons, that they served Mass and were called bishop, and that Jesus accepted them equally and whole-heartedly into the ranks of his disciples." Such work serves to illustrate how "hallow" the "theological arguments for women's ostracism from the Church's highest rung of sacramental authority" are.
The other issues Bonavoglia addresses are more controversial. She attacks the Church's ban on artificial contraception stating that most of the faithful choose to ignore it. While that certainly is the case, her depiction of the Church's position is faulty. She repeatedly refers to the natural family planning method allowed by the Church as the unreliable rhythm method. While that may have been true forty years ago, the natural family planning methods of today are highly scientific, easy to learn, and very reliable. She should have done more research in this area. This error does not undermine her thesis, however, that in this case the Church failed to listen to the sense of the faithful.
She also condemns the Church's position on divorce and considers the annulment process an unnecessary burden and intrusion into the lives of the faithful. Marriage is no doubt difficult and divorce painful. The Church does need to provide appropriate pastoral care and not ostracize people simply because their marriage did not last. Bonavoglia suggests that the Church get out of the marriage business all together. She puts forth an idea by Rosemary Radford Ruether that there instead be "'sexual friendship covenants for couples entering into a sexual relationship. These couples, not ready to have children or make a permanent commitment, would take temporary vows that can be evaluated or periodically renewed." There would be a second ceremony for entering into a "'lifelong effort' toward permanency," and lastly a ceremony similar to a baptism when children came in which both parents would promise to be faithful to the child whether or not their own union lasts. This idea borders on the ridiculous. As if life was ever that neat! People who are not ready to have children should not be having sex. Sex has consequences and no contraceptive method is foolproof. And to say that we will make an effort at permanency provides little incentive to do so when times get tough. Marriage has lasted since time began. The Church is right to promote and defend it.
Bonavoglia also profiles women working to promote equality of homosexuals in the Church, and women who have chosen to not wait for the Vatican to allow women's ordination but have taken that step themselves. By far, however, the most difficult subject is that of abortion. Even Bonavoglia acknowledges that this is a contentious issue, even among reformers. In her defense, she does present both sides of the issue. She interviews both Frances Kissling of Catholics for a Free Choice as well as Maria Coffey who staunchly holds the opposite opinion. She states that many Catholic women, especially young women fall somewhere in between, believing that "you can believe that a woman has a right to choose, and you can also believe that abortion should be the last possible option." That position is certainly understandable. I think almost any woman can relate to the fears of a pregnant woman in difficult circumstances. However, we are talking about a life. If we as a Church, as the people of God, a God who gave us life, don't defend it, who will?
"Good Catholic Girls" does make you think. Bonavoglia brings up almost every serious issue facing the Church today. This book is a good starting place for debate. The Church, contrary to what many think, is always in a state of flux and pushing for change can be a good thing. I agree with Bonavoglia that women need a greater role in the Church. I think that if the Church made every change that she wants, however, there would be very little left of the Church. The Church does need to follow Jesus' message of love and acceptance, but Jesus also taught us to follow the commandments. The Church should speak for God. It should provide a moral compass. Perhaps those morals are the ideal and not every one will live up to them, but that doesn't mean we should move the standards to the lowest common denominator. Instead, the Church, both the hierarchical and the people in the pews, need to be loving and encouraging and help all of us, men and women, to live the lives God wants of us.

Catholic Women's History.......2005-12-12
This book was so eye opening for me.
As a Catholic I have gone to the same parish almost my entire life and have only known what happens within my parish and what is commonly said about the Catholic church by the media... and WOW! I would have never dreamed there were so many women fighting to be seen within the church, fighting to be equally a part of the Catholic tradition, and fighting to change the church from within. If you are an American Catholic woman and/or a feminist and want to know more of your history read this book! Then go on to read the books that Bonavoglia mentions throughout the book.

God's Leading Lady by T.D. Jakes.......2007-02-07
I loaned this to my friend who proceeded to highlight every page and, in general, make it appear dog-eared after only a few days. She still hasn't returned it, as she takes it every where she goes. I have to order another copy for myself because she keeps telling me that God will bless me "big-time" for giving her this book!
GRAND.......2006-09-13
This book expresses how we(women) should choose to live our lives and not let 'outsiders' steer us in the wrong direction. This book gives you the resources, as well as the courage to live your life as productively as you can.
GOD'S LEADING LADY.......2005-09-27
I really enjoyed the book God's Leading Lady. The reason I really enjoyed the book is because it is a self help book. It also showed women how to take center stage in their life. Iwould reccomend this book to all females. If they read God's Leading Lady it will help them to become one of God' Leading Lady.
A Platitude on Every Page.......2004-09-13
I have loved listening to Bishop Jakes preach since he was still in his little church in West Virginia. I've watched his programs and listened to his tapes. I bought this book on his name alone. What a disappointment. God's Leading Lady is like one continuous pep rally. Rah! Rah! Rah! Sister, you can do it. Go! Go! Go! "Step out of the shadows and into the light". "Don't believe that you are alone no matter how desolate and bare your life's theater feels". "You must move beyond the Potter's shelf into the fire of greatness". "It is time you soar". "All the world is your stage--step up and allow yourself to shine".
I agree wholeheartedly with the message of this book. As women, we do put shackles on ourselves or allow others to do so. I don't think the author did enough to explain how to soar, just to have faith and do it. I couldn't get into the message or the point of the book because I was exhausted from wading through paragraph after paragraph of rhetoric and tedium. The book did get better as it went along, but not enough to warrant the money spent.
Discovering ourselves as leading ladies.......2004-01-09
I believe that this book is a wonderful book and the a great work. I felt as though this book was designed for me for the emotional period that I was facing in my life and it gave me a new perspective as a Christian women. T.D. Jakes was able to explain how a lot of women feel today: striving for success but never really reaching it or feeling as though it was in vain because it feels as though they have a mediocre lifestyle. I have taken his advice in the book and formed some new year resolutions that I intend to follow for this year and years to come.

Customer Reviews:
There are better books out there.......2007-10-02
There are definitely better books on pregnancy out there. I got this one for free from my OB, but if I had paid for it, I would have been sorely disappointed. It's got very brief information on a lot of topics around pregnancy & birth, but it's very cut and dry. It truly is like reading a longer pamphlet.
Comprehensive review.......2007-09-22
This book is a great reference book for pregnant woman that want a scientific and straight forward approach to the steps throughout pregnancy, labor and birth. Another reviewer mentioned that it doesn't talk about midwife or alternative birthing centers other than main stream. Well, what do you expect? This book is by the American College of Obstetrician and Gynecologists not by the American Association of Midwifes. It is my understanding in reading the book that ACOG has enough scientific evidence to believe that alternative birthing centers are not always safe and not for everyone so it would be unfair to have them do a general review on something that needs a specific, case by case basis consideration. And I do believe that if something goes wrong, you have a lower chance of success having a midwife assisting your birth rather than a gynecologist that has gone through 10 years of training in the subject matter.
If only there were a "no stars" choice..........2007-07-10
I think this is by far the worst pregnancy book I have ever read. Not only does it not even discuss the option of using a professional or lay midwife, but it even goes so far as saying a freestanding birth center birth (and although it does not even give it the respect of a mention, probably a homebirth) is unsafe. Please! Anyone with two brain cells and the ability to read scientific studies knows that an out-of-hospital birth is a totally safe place for low-risk healthy moms to give birth.
Additionally, this is the only preg. book I have ever seen that lists the various rare abnormalities your baby may have. Do moms REALLY need to be reading about that stuff when it is highly unlikely to happen to them?
This book gives an extremely medicalized view of pregnancy and birth. If you don't want to particiapte in active labor, don't believe your are capable of having a normal, healthy pregnancy and birth, and belive your pregnancy is something to be "managed" by a "professional" then this might be the book for you. Not surprising it is put out by the American COllege of Obstetrics!
The most authoritative source on pregnancy and birth.......2007-06-08
If you have the time to read just one book on pregnancy, then this is it. This book is probably the most under-rated in all the pregnancy books and unfairly so. Perhaps this is because it does not have a catchy name of other pregnancy books or the folksy feel of the "What to expect" series or the wacky humor of some other books. We came to possess and read this book only because the Doctor gave it in a goody bag. It is unfortunate that so many people in Amazon are missing out on this valuable book.
This book has the required information in a concise and clear manner. It covers the key aspects of a healthy pregnancy - the stages and changes, prenatal care, nutrition and exercise. It also covers birth, possible complications and post-partum care for mother and baby. Though it is written by experts (OB-GYNs) from ACOG (American college of Gynecologists), the narrative is easy to read, precise and non-patronizing. The numerous photos and figures clarify many aspects of pregnancy.
For readers who like doctors' brochures.......2007-04-16
This book gives a mainstream account of current medical advice in the U.S. for childbirth. Instead of discussing risks and advantages of the choices made during labor and delivery, this book tries to prepare readers for whatever most U.S. obstetricians will recommend.
Walking an inoffensive middle path, the book fails to describe the experience of labor in physical terms that a woman will relate to. Mothers are portrayed as patients rather than active participants in the delivery room.
In comparison to other books, this one manages to avoid the alarmist hand-wringing of WTEWYAE ("What to Expect..."), but it also fails to arm a woman with the information she needs to feel confident about labor and her own medical preferences. I recommend Sheila Kitzinger's "The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth."
Book Description
Women with savoir faire and verve, women who inform and inspire, women who know how to get what they want out of a room-Designing Women takes a fresh look at sixteen contemporary trendsetters. The exclusive group includes Muriel Brandolini, Mariette Hines Gomez, Tricia Guild, Victoria Hagan, Holly Hunt, Charlotte Moss, and Catherine Memmi-innovators whose highly individual styles have strongly influenced the direction of design. In this inspirational book, these icons of interior decoration lead by example: Striking portraits of their personal surroundings reveal how they bring their professional philosophies home. Showcasing the designers' own homes, author Margaret Russell outlines a variety of design approaches to particular rooms, taking into account such elements as scale, fabrics and furnishings, and color and texture. A resource list provides contact information for the designers' favorite sources.

Show me the inspiration!.......2002-12-10
Lovely to look at, lovely to hold.... but that is about it! Whereas the photographs are masterful, there is little beyond the pictures, not even a rudimentary, cursory, or trifling insight or inspiration. One does expect something after all from a living room tome. It is truly the book that doesn't even begin to give. I am glad I purchased this book used as I would have felt used and abused to have paid full price for this creativity bypass and abyss.
No WOW factor, but still nice to look at.......2002-04-27
The designers showcased have marvelous taste, but there is nothing here that was impressive. The book is beautifully photographed, but that's about it. My suggestion-Wait until it's on clearance or borrow it from the library. C+
Ho-Hum- Another coffee table book.......2002-02-22
As someone who was looking for exciting new design and especially from a woman's perspective, I was not wowed by this book. Instead I got good pictures but little depth. I can pick up any magazine today and see the same thing. Not very interesting or inspiring.
A fabulous book - and useful to boot!.......2001-08-28
i love design books, but truthfully, some are way too far out there for my tastes - and then some are ho-hum and uninformative. this is a really, really great book - not only are the designers extremely interesting individuals - but their personal tastes are actually out there for the taking. i might not have loved each of their homes - but i loved the fact that THEY loved them! also great about this book - and maybe my favorite part (aside from the TERRIFIC photos - wow) are the super great hints each designer gives at the end of her segment - they are actual USEABLE and DOABLE!
Designing Women.......2001-08-06
As an architect dealing with spectacular spaces and inspirational forms & materials designing my own home, the 5 stars on this lead me to say, "OK, let's get to interior design". I have to add my evaluation to prevent others from thinking this is fabulous. I found it so ordinary and uninspiring I was flabergated by the reviews I had read. I am glad there are women out there designing, and each to her own taste, but I found little here. It is the first book I have ever returned to Amazon.
