If you're looking for a quick, easy, and fun guide to constantly cultivating from within your organization the talent to move up and fill positions left behind by others, don't look here. Written by a human resources expert who teaches at Penn State, Effective Succession Planning must surely be one of the driest books ever written on this topic, from its aggressively unsexy title and jacket to its college-textbook format and arsenal of supplementary checklists, flowcharts, and exercises.
Having said that, it's also probably one of the most thorough books on the topic (and a fine complement to The Leadership Pipeline), incorporating methodical and meticulous guidelines to preparing for and quickly filling crucial vacancies at all levels of the organization, from top management to sales, administrative, technical, and production positions. Not only does it lay out a plan for instituting a long-term succession planning program that includes everything from early action steps to ongoing evaluation and revision, it also shows how to develop, monitor, and evaluate talent and skills in individual employees in order to promote effectively from within (although it acknowledges that sometimes the best choices come from outside, and offers key steps for optimizing the outside-search process as well).
Everything is covered here, from the legal implications of hiring and firing and online and high-tech resources to major trends that will affect succession planning in the years ahead. And, thank god, the author has incorporated some case studies--both fictional/composite and those of several large real-life companies--to add some names and faces to a volume that's about as dry as the Sahara, and (for human-resource professionals, at least) potentially as welcome as a fresh supply of water if you happened to be stuck in such a place. --Timothy Murphy
Book Description
When key employees and executives move on -- whether expectedly or unexpectedly -- organizations had better have a good succession plan in place. The most comprehensive and authoritative book on the subject, Effective Succession Planning has helped countless companies develop strong succession programs and avoid major disruptions.
Thoroughly revised to reflect the latest trends and best practices, the book presents strategies for identifying competencies, clarifying values, assessing current and future needs, and creating a complete, systematic succession planning program. The third edition also features all-new material reflecting the author's surveys on:
* whole system transformation
* software support packages
* tapping retirees to manage succession crises
* the growing activism of boards in succession planning
* and more
The book includes a new diagnostic tool to assess specific succession needs, illuminating case studies, and a CD-ROM with worksheets, assessment tools, and training guides.
Customer Reviews:
Exceeded my expectations.......2007-09-28
Rothwell's book is one of the more comprehensive and well researched books covering this growing topic. It includes a wealth of information following all of the major steps of the Succession Planning process. The book contains useful worksheets and task process flows that allow a reader to rapidly introduce the core concepts into their organisation. A great resource.
excellent reference.......2007-06-20
easy to understand and absorb great intro reference
Like a lot of other things---it's only as good as you apply it.......2007-05-12
The need for succession planning is reaching crisis proportions, yet few organizations are willing to face the crisis and do something about it.
There's nothing magic here---just a realistic, comprehensvie, flexible approach to get the job done. The strenghts in this book:
- Finding the right devleopmental activity for the right level of management
- Design, gain support, and implement, and maintain your succession process.
- Lots of extras, including assessments and a plan to devleop a mentoring program.
A great value.
Extremely Helpful.......2005-08-29
Rothwell provides not only an excellent review of the current literature but countless worksheets for practice. If you are interested in succession planning issues this book is a must. I would also recommend "The Leadership Pipeline" by Charan, Drotter, & Noel. And buy a copy of "Strategic Organizational Learning" by Beitler. Beitler has several free articles on his website "[...]" that are also helpful.

Very good book,plus..........2003-06-19
This is a very good book. In addition to this, I would strongly recommend "Strategic Organizational Change" by Beitler. The two books make a powerful combination.

Succession Planning and Management: A Guide to Organizational Systems and Practices
ASIN: 1560523808 |
Book Description
Succession planning saves the cost and time of external personnel searches. It improves employee morale, lessens the effects of reengineering and downsizing, but most important, it creates a diverse talent pool within your organization. This book was written to guide you through the evaluation process of succession planning. It describes the guidelines for setting up a program, along with benchmarking procedures for ensuring the ongoing success of your plan.
Customer Reviews:
Difficult to See the Stairs thru all the Steps.......2006-07-06
This book was helpful and I believe it will be useful in consulting with organizations seeking help with succession planning. It contains many helpful graphics, worksheets, and checklists. It does not get bogged down in theory but stays, for the most part, at the "how to do it" level.
The book's focus appears to be on the corporate world, vs. non-profits. I believe some of it's suggestions will be difficult to implement in smaller organizations. It focuses on longer-term, ongoing planning rather than emergency succession planning or leadership transition management.
Although the book is generally clear, concise, well-written, and logically presented, at times the level of detail obscures the process being recommended. Steps are given for each stage of the planning process. Often these steps have sub-steps (and sometimes those sub-steps have further sub-steps, typically given in another part of the chapter or in another chapter). Several times I lost track of the logical flow of the overall process as I read through all the (genreally helpful) detail. A brief (1-4 page) summary outline at the end of the book would have helped tie the whole process together for me. I think readers can, with a little work, generate such an outline and that it would result in much useable material (and will serve as a key to unlocking other helpful info in the book).
The book contains some immediately useable (or easilty adaptable) practical tools. However, many of the worksheets were more helpful for the additional ideas that they generated upon further contemplation. At times the worksheets (as presented) were too brief and/or lacked much explanation of how they might be used or of the key concepts they were built upon or referenced.
I am confident that after giving the book a quick read and highlighting, I will be able to give organizations some helpful insights and tools for the important (and often mystifying) process of succession planning. The book was a good introduction, and the right price was right (compared to other brief books on this and similar topics). However, I am still looking for a better overview with more practical tips for non-profit organizations.
The book I read and am reviewing was of the same title and publication date, but was authored by Rebecca L. Wolfe.
Succession Planning.......2005-08-31
An easy, step-by-step guide to developing a succession plan for filling key organizational positions vacated by retirement or attrition. Filled with good examples and exercises that can be used in the workplace to develop the plan. I like books that have forms that I can adapt to my situation. I recommend for anyone tasked to do a plan who doesn't have time to read a lot of theory.
Good introduction to succession planning.......2000-08-30
Especially for the smaller business or the family firm, Wolfe's book provides a concise guide to establishing a succession management strategy. Her writing is free of jargon, and unlike many management books, isn't repetitive or especially boring. I recommend it for anyone contemplating whether a succession management strategy is needed for their business.

Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High
ASIN: 1577363523 |
Product Description
In todays competitive and sometimes cutthroat business world, the concept that a leader can and should govern based on spiritual principles might seem impractical or impossible. In Leading from Within, Thomas Beeman and Richard Glenn make the powerful case that having a spiritual frame of reference can actually benefit companies, but more important, nourish the leaders who shepherd them.
Using examples from their own careers and personal experiences, these two health-care executives outline twelve spiritual concepts that senior management in all industries can use to lead and live by.
Leading from Within speaks to CEOs, executives, senior managers, board members, and anyone seeking to direct an organization while staying focused on what really mattersfor themselves and for their companies.
Each chapter starts with an illustrative leadership challenge spotlighting a corporate issue. Beeman and Glenn then introduce the spiritual concept relating to that issue, why it matters to the corporation and individuals, and how it relates to leadership. Sections called Fireside Chats present conversations between the two authors in which they use examples from their own experiences to further demonstrate the importance of a spiritual perspective. Personal applications, journal opportunities, and daily spiritual practices for the reader round out the insightful, applicable chapters.

Most people see leadership as the act of leading someone else. Not Peter Urs Bender. For him, leadership begins with leading ourselves. His book describes the five key steps in leadership: know yourself; have vision and passion; take risks; communicate; check progress and results.
Customer Reviews:
Great Insights into life AND leadership.......2005-07-02
The author has outdone himself on this book. The leadership topic has been done thousands of times, but with this book we finally get a refreshing INTERNAL look at leadership and how it can be used and created.
A MUST have not only for business people, but also for anyone who would like to have a little more control of their own life.
A winner for sure.
A disaster.......2005-01-17
The book is a nightmare. The average length of each sentence is six words or thereabouts. I think Disney's speech bubbles are more complex than this. It reminds me of a bad TV preacher with dimples and I felt like exclaiming "halleluja" after each sentence. The man is completely incapable of putting a readable paragraph together. I read this book after devouring Charles Taylor's Modern Social Imaginaries and I did not manage to get past page 30, no matter how hard I tried. Horrible.
Leadership from within.......2002-07-14
Bender is doing an excellent job motivating key excecutives by maintaining high ethical standards. This book is a must for every leader who wants to be more successful.
A must read!.......2001-10-23
Peter Urs Bender writes in such a refreshing way that it's hard to stop reading his books once you start.
Leadership from Within is full of excellent ideas, interspersed with Peter's own enlightening perspectives and first class expertise.
Any business person (whether employed, or self-employed) can learn something by reading Leadership from Within - I work entirely alone and I even gained some incredibly valuable knowledge.
This is an excellent choice. buy it!
A great tome on leadership..........2001-07-16
Mr. Bender has written a fantastic little book on leadership style and approach. It isn't overwhelming, one can read a littler here and a little there, the topics are on the mark, the advice is solid and the package is interesting.
It's hard to make the topic of leadership something beyond informative, but Bender manages to make it interesting and fun. The author focuses on 'style' and how one can manage the various personalities that inevitably crop up in the professional world. What's particularly nice about the insight in this book is that it's in no way condescending. Like magnate Mike Hammer says, "the soft stuff is the hard stuff." Managing people is 'soft leadership' while managing process is 'hard leadership.' And it's the soft leadership that is the hardest to do well. Bender will set you well on your way to doing right and doing it well.
...I highly recommend Mr. Bender's works.

The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down
ASIN: 157524022X |
Book Description
The premise is that we are all leaders. When we care enough to want to create a better future in which to live and work, then we are ready to lead. Exploring the context of the passion which calls us to lead brings into focus our personal framework for leadership learning. As we learn, we discover, develop, and nourish the leader within. This book links together the why, the who, and the what of leadership in a personalized, but nonprescriptive format. Reflective questions and journaling suggestions assist the reader in a journey that is unique for each individual and in each context. Suggested resources and activities for learning leadership make this a useful tool in classroom or group settings as well as for an emerging leader. The book does not advocate any single theory or approach, but guides the reader to a personal understanding of leadership and its applications.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book, highly recommended.......2004-11-24
I took a leadership course that used this book and I must admit that I was very impressed with the simplicity but yet earthly manner which Nancy Huber (author) has spoken in, as she speaks directly to the heart. She calls forth to search for the leader within us: reasoning us with logic of what it means to be a true leader, encouraging, motivating, building a vision, desiring a change, building a community around us, to find the authentic side of us, and acting upon in "doing" leadership in all aspects in our lives rather than just "knowing" the technical aspects of it at work. It really helps to align one's life compass with one's life call, and I highly recommend it as you will never be the same after reading it. This book is for those who desire to be a true leader, enough to warrant for a true change. It contains pure andedote of truths that will only make you stronger in character and more in tune with your true self. Once you've started to "lead from within", you won't feel artificial or fake again at work, any place or anywhere else. Excellent book... highly recommended.
This is an excellent book about leadership!.......2000-04-06
This book really helped me to explore my own ideas concerning leadership! It provided wonderful exercises at the end of each chapter that solidified the material for me. It helped me to realize that we are all leaders and we can all develop our own philosiphies about leadership.
