Digital Capitalism: Networking the Global Market System

One of the great early claims of cyberculture was that the Net constituted a realm distinct from the "real world," with a life and laws all its own. This book argues strongly to the contrary. Not only is cyberspace an integral part of the real world, Dan Schiller insists, but it exists primarily to serve powerful real-world economic interests--none of which are necessarily aligned with the principles of individual freedom and equal access commonly touted as the Internet's defining values. In Schiller's reckoning, it was neither Al Gore, the Pentagon bureaucracy, nor a subculture of long-haired hackers that brought digital networks into being. Rather, it was large corporations in the '40s and '50s that were looking to expand operations across national borders. Through big business's economic demand for sophisticated networking tools, and more importantly, through its direct political demands for deregulated digital telecommunications, these corporate interests carved out the technosocial realm we now know as cyberspace. The Internet thus stands as both symptom and fulcrum of the broader trend toward globalization that is the hallmark of the political economy of the late 20th century.
In Schiller's view, that trend is a decidedly bad thing, and he spends much of the book outlining what he sees as its deleterious effects on economic equality, media culture, and higher education. These are unabashedly anticapitalist sentiments, but whether or not you agree with them, Schiller's account of the relationship between corporations and cyberspace demands to be reckoned with. --Julian Dibbell
Book Description
The networks that comprise cyberspace were originally created at the behest of government agencies, military contractors, and allied educational institutions. Over the past generation or so, however, a growing number of these networks began to serve primarily corporate users. Under the sway of an expansionary market logic, the Internet began a political-economic transition toward what Dan Schiller calls "digital capitalism."Customer Reviews:

Bridging the Global Digital Divide
Jeffrey James Manufacturer: Edward Elgar Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1843762064 |
Book Description
According to many observers, the global digital divide - the extent to which information technology is benefiting developed as opposed to developing countries - has already established itself as the single most pervasive theme of the twenty-first century. The purpose of this book is to explore some of the ways in which this divide can be overcome both within and between nations. Employing a rigorous analytical framework, the author bases his analysis on the concept of international technological dualism. He argues that one possible solution to the problem is the availability of affordable technologies, such as low-cost computers, which are specifically designed for the income levels and socio-economic conditions of developing countries. He also emphasizes that the most important aim of any policy measure should be to provide universal access to information technologies, rather than individual ownership. Depending on whether or not this divide can be bridged will, to a large degree, determine whether developing countries are able to attain higher levels of productivity, prosperity and global integration.Development economists, international policymakers and NGOs will all welcome the book's emphasis on various low cost technologies and their application in communal settings in the developing world. The non-technical nature of this volume will also make it accessible to a broader audience who wishes to understand ways of alleviating this critical problem which has the potential to become even more acute as new and ever more complex technologies emerge.

More global marketing than "digital marketing".......1998-07-30
The book helps somewhat with what to consider - having some good rankings of countries and their relative abilities to accept/use the internet and internet based purchasing. However, the book doesn't really tell me how to sell; fulfill orders, manage exports/imports at the nitty-gritty level that I need.
I know there are many anecdotal accounts of the buying habits of individuals in different countries that might help me avoid some pitfalls in marketing to them. I found very few of those in this text.
The text is at a very high level. It provides a framework for thinking about marketing globally. However, aside from the country rankings, I found the actual content to be somewhat superficial.
Another book that takes a more nuts and bolts approach is "How to build a Successful International Web Site" by ! Mark Bishop. However, that is at a very rudimentary level as well. Another text designed to help you sell on the internet is "Selling on the Internet" by Gonyea and Gonyea. This has a helpful "Storefront Planning Worksheet" that helps organize the development.
I still have not seen an overwhelmingly impressive book on the subject. Most texts just help you get foot on the first rung of a ladder but you still have to climb the rest of the way yourself.
