Book Description
A proven system for improving your own work and for working better in a team
Used by such organizations as the Walt Disney Company, Silicon Graphics, the Federal Reserve Bank, and the CIA, the Enneagram is a proven psychological system based on nine number types that helps people achieve self-awareness and develop strategic approaches to interpersonal interactions. In Bringing Out the Best in Yourself at Work, Enneagram teacher and business consultant Ginger Lapid-Bodga shows professionals how to apply this popular tool to their work as a way to improve their productivity and help them build positive relationships among coworkers. This practical guide explains how to use the Enneagram to:
- Communicate more effectively
- Provide constructive feedback
- Prevent and resolve conflict
- Bring out their strongest leadership skills
- Discover methods for professional development
- Work better in teams
Customer Reviews:
Finally..........2006-08-26
The genuine nugget in this book is its use of the Enneagram to move forward the original Center for Creative Leaderhip research about what derails successful professionals. Lapid-Bogna's gift is to communicate the most profound and deeply thoughtful insights with deceptively casual language. I agree it needs to be read twice: Once to understand the techniques it describes, and a second time to appreciate how she builds on her hard-earned understanding of what works and doesn't work in OD and career development. Then, consider reading it a third time to appreciate the Enneagram for the doors it opens to truly deep personal growth. Not just another book written as a practice-building marketing piece for the author. It contains enough material for at least two books.
The most practical enneagram book out there for business applications.......2005-10-03
I love this book. I am an executive coach and I find this very useful for helping my Enneagram-aware clients apply the model directly and quickly to work situations -- to help debug relationships, communications, conflilct, etc.
I especially like Lapid-Bogda's distinctions and examples around "Pinch" and "Crunch" for each of the types.
I don't know of any other books except Michael Goldberg's "The Nine Ways of Working" that fill this business-application niche quite so well.
Highly recommended for those who need a practical, hands-on way of using the Ennegram in day to day work interactions.
Betsy Siwula Brandt, Breakthrough Consulting, Santa Fe, NM .......2005-09-03
Finally a groundbreaking book on the 9 ways of working that can be handed to your HR director! Enneagram Personality System books started being published in the 1980's; not until now has there been one that systematically applies this system to organizations. As an organization development consultant, I have always found the enneagram to be essential to my executive coaching and development. Now, in a practical and most excellent way, Lapid-Bogda applies the system to all key areas of organization life-- including employee feedback, conflict in teams, leadership and team development, etc. You can take the applications and use them immediately on the change initiatives you already have underway in your orgaization-- such as your 360 degree feedback sessions.
Not only does Lapid-Bogda make it easy for you to apply this system, but once familiar with her book and work, the reader can order tailor made tools that go with each organization topic that will further assist your ease of application.
If you are "stuck" in your own personal career development or trying to lead others in theirs-- and looking for a breakthrough-- then buy this book!
A Life Changing Book.......2005-08-20
This book has helped me in ways that I never imagined. The information in this book has been extremely useful in my quest to better understand myself and others. "Bringing Out the Best in Yourself at Work" is very much a must read for anyone interested in improving their relationships at work and in life in general.
Personality Traits in the Business Environment.......2004-09-01
This is a book on using the Enneagram system specifically oriented to todays business environment. The Enneagram is not unlike other personality oriented systems. First an individual is asked to examine nine different personality types and to identify himself with one. Then the Enneagram, a diagram of the interaction of the various types can be used to predict behavior.
The book, however, reverses the normal trend in personality testing books where the book is organized around the personality type. Instead the book describes several common business situations and then describes how the various personality types react to the situation.

Excellent resume resource for those without a clue.......2007-08-25
This book will undoubtedly save time for those who are frustrated by the process of writing their own resume. Having reviewed more resumes than I can count at this point, I can fully appreciate the value in showing people how to scrutinize their own work. The trouble that I've found is that people are too close to their own histories to do a really good job of marketing themselves. They know too much. What this book shows as much as anything is that getting a professional review on a resume is worth the price.
Good Value.......2002-07-17
I found the book to be very helpful. It had some useful tips and sample resumes and cover letters. One of the best books of its type I've ever seen
Boring and a waste of time!.......2000-04-25
I bought this book based on all of the favorable review's and was greatly disappointed. As a recent college graduate in the humanities, I found it to be a big waste of time and money! If you are not interested in finding a job, buy this book!
Good Pick.......1999-12-28
My wife got me this book for Christmas through Amazon.com to follow up with my New Year's resolution to look for new opportunities in healthcare. This book is pretty good - it has a lot of varying kinds of resumes and good tips for overall job search, interviewing, and networking.

Customer Reviews:
some attractive options for your career search.......2001-10-17
Beginning with a definition of a nonprofit organization (it lies between government and business, it's typically about social change or improvement, it may be controversial, and it provides a service), this book ranks organizations which employ over 100 people, have an annual budget of over $1 million, has been in business at least three years, and whose culture is somehow linked to its mission.
From Amnesty to Cousteau, from the Nature Conservancy to Zoo Atlanta, here is a brief description of well-known or lesser-known organizations. You'll have a point of contact, a statement of philosophy, and some assistance in identifying your dream organizations. There are also some tips on job-hunting in the nonprofit world. It's fascinating reading!
Hooray for nonprofits!.......2000-07-07
Hamilton and Tragert give a decent survey of nonprofit organizations, rating their top 100. I was dissappointed that they included more corporate non-profits, like the NRA, and not very many localized charities, even if they're budgets are small. Also, the "potent quote" listed at the end of each entry is usually just a quote pulled from the organization's website, which shows lazy research, and can often lack potency

Very useful.......2004-05-30
I highly recommend this book. If you have had a reputation for being disorganized in the past, by following the instructions here you can really clean up your act. This book includes chapters on how to arrange tickler systems, how to keep your hard drive orderly and high-functioning, and hundreds of tips on how to trim minutes off tasks. The arrangement of the book is effective and clear, and the presentation of concepts is well-written too. This book isn't just for office managers--as a professional I find it extremely useful.
As practical and applicable as it is "reader friendly".......2001-02-09
Now in an updated and expanded fourth edition, Susan Silver's Organized To Be Your Best!: Simplify And Improve How You Work continues to be an indispensable instruction manual enabling the reader to control multiple, ever-changing projects and priorities, intense workloads and information overload. Readers will learn to manage email, voice, fax, and other instant communications, devise a time and information management system tailored to their needs, work more effectively with others, master a messy desk and "piles of files", maximize the work space (including alternative, virtual, and home offices), and get the most from the computer and the Internet. Very highly recommended, Organized To Be Your Best! is as practical and applicable as it is "reader friendly" and workplace productivity improving.
Contains all the tips for organizing your life at work.......2001-02-03
Wow! Dubbed "The Bible of Organization" by the media, the latest edition (4th, to be exact) is not a disappointment. The author (Susan Silver) has included all the tips you need for organizing your life at work, from time management to streamlining your workspace and all the points in between.
Whether you are looking for tips on managing projects or trying to create an organized workspace, Organized To Be Your Best! is the one guide you need for balancing it all.
Organized to be the Best-No office should be without it.......2000-12-07
I have had this book for years and have used it in many work/office situations. It has served me well as a reference book whenever I have had a need to keep myself and my work organized. It's also great to read through the entire book to get practical tips and information. Most of the ideas presented are very simple but it's those simple ideas which can make your life easier and save you loads of time and stress. I have found this book to be well worth the money spent and I believe that you will agree. If you want to be more organized in your work and your life - this book will help you achieve that goal!

Good Leads for On-Going Data Sources About Jobs.......2001-01-01
No perspective written about the job market at one point in time can hope to be accurate for very long. This book offsets that inherent weakness by providing you with lots of places to get up-to-the-minute information. This book will be of most value to those thinking about what programs to follow for vocational training, college, and graduate school. It will also be of some help to younger people in the job market who are thinking about changing careers. The book's main weakness is in placing almost no focus on becoming your own boss by starting a business of your own.
Here is the design of this book, including some of the contents of the major sections:
Chapter 1: Are You Ready for the 21st Century? -- "Whatever you're doing today will most certainly be history ten years from now." Be "fast on your feet and entrepreneurial." "[D]o what you really love." The chapter also has a quiz to help you test how well you understand the future job environment as described in the book.
Chapter 2: Preparation for Turbulence and New Opportunities -- You will require marketable skills, have to change careers, use new career tools and change your focus, and relocate into new areas with better economic growth. Seven key changes are outlined. For example, jobs will be both rapidly created and eliminated (through downsizing and starting of new businesses). The change described about boom or bust growth in new jobs I find questionable. Job growth should be robust for at least the next 8 years due to demographics.
Chapter 3: Preparation for 33 Coming Changes -- These focus on where shortages will occur. An example is a forecast of unemployment ranging between 4 and 9 percent, and suggesting that you be wary about periods of high unemployment. As I mentioned above, this is unlikely to occur until after 2008. This is the most interesting part of the book. Most of the observations hold water to me, such as the idea that many skilled and high-technology jobs will move off shore where employment costs are much lower.
Chapter 4: Identify the Best Jobs for Tomorrow -- The fastest growing areas are in science, engineering, computer technology and health services. Job satisfaction is highest for sociologists, biologists, and dental hygienists (there's no explanation of why this is true). Many other lists are included to stimulate your imagination.
Chapter 5: Best Paying Jobs and Salary Ranges -- 229 occupations are briefly profiled with thumbnail sketches.
Chapter 6: Best Places to Live and Work -- The accuracy of thiis information very much depends on what your objectives and preferences are. So take this information with a big dose of skepticism.
Chapter 7: Medical and Health Care Careers
Chapter 8: Computer and Internet Careers
Chapter 9: Science and Engineering Careers
Chapter 10: Business and Finance Careers
Chapter 11: Education, Government and Legal Careers
Chapter 12: Art, Media, and Entertainment Careers
Chapter 13: Travel and Hospitality Careers
Chapter 14: Resolution, Personal Services, and Transportation Careers
Chapters 7-14 are basic overviews of these job areas. These will be helpful only to those who have essentially no knowledge now in a particular area. You get basic descriptions of the work, salaries, and special issues. It isn't made clear how hard it is to qualify for these jobs.
Chapter 15: Finding the Best Job for the Future -- This chapter is about places to get more and more up-to-date information.
As you can see, this is a resource book more than a "how to" book. It gives you almost no help in figuring out how to fit your career and personal life together, how to understand how a type of job will fit your personality and specific interests, and how to go about testing the potential "fit" before moving into a job or career path.
On the other hand, it is the most complete resource book I have seen. So it can play a useful role in your life planning.
After you have studied this book, I suggest that you take a psychological test to help you narrow down potential fields by how well their activities relate to your mental and emotional preferences. Then, this book will be much more helpful to you.
I also encourage you to read "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" to get another perspective on how to organize your life, especially about establishing a business and becoming an investor.
Choose a beautiful life for you and those you love! Good luck!
A valuable resource for creative job seekers.......2000-08-02
This is an excellent book. The author has done a great job in pulling together the elements which spell success in the quest for employment. I recommend it.
