5 out of 5 stars Still Cool.......2006-09-23

This is a great book. It's making my life a lot easier. It presents sound methodology if you are going to develop and build a commercial Web site. I am using it in school right now. It really defines terms in such a way that they are not just words that you toss around. By defining, describing and giving examples the terms become second nature and you actually understand in a logical fashion the integrated elements of designing and maintaining a commercial Web site.

1 out of 5 stars Boring, not up to date, and impossible to pick up..........2005-11-25

The Web Design department of the career college I am an instructor and program coordinator at have used this text for several years now as the primary text for a web project management class. The problem with this book is that it sets the bar too high from the beginning and only applies if one finds themseleves a project manager handling huge corporate website accounts. It is impossible to scale the tone of the book down to explain the process when dealing with individuals and small businesses when the book has you only "wearing one hat" when sometimes you have to wear them all. It's also terribly boring to read, which makes it impossible to gain any understanding from it.This is an old book, in great need of an update. There are much more current and interesting books out there now that handle the same topic, and do it well. This may have been the first book of its kind, but it's certainly not the greatest.

2 out of 5 stars REALLY short on specifics.......2005-11-18

Talks WAY too much in generalities and jargon, with almost no specifics. The website for the book says they can't give more specifics about, for example, project specification documents, because of confidentiality. That's a really lame excuse for not coming up with a sample, detailed project spec.

5 out of 5 stars A Web Developer Manager's Do All Book.......2005-01-08

Three points:

1. Anyone that buys this book with the understanding that they will learn how to project manage should not be in Project Management. One of the best is "The Portable MBA in Project Management" by Eric Verzuh.

2. I can't really add more to the many reviews below giving high ratings to this book. However, I will suggest this. Even if after reading the reviews listed below, you still find yourself not sure if this book is worth it, then "look inside the book" and the table of contents. If that doesn't sell you, then I think you're in the wrong industry.

3. This book is a must have for any project manager of commercial web development who wants to survive in a most competitive industry.

5 out of 5 stars Still a solid methodology for Web Project Management.......2004-02-14

It has been about four years since this book's last edition came out, and it continues to top the list of Web Project Management references, and with reason for it. Its proven methodology provides a solid framework that you can relate to once and again, with confidence and permanently reminding of potential pitfalls and obstacles. In short, Friedlein's book provides the closest thing to a recipe for success with managing web projects: of course, you can always put in a little too much salt yourself, can't you? ;)

5 out of 5 stars Exceeded my expectations.......2007-08-10

Ive been reading Tony Redmond's Exchange books since the one written for Exchange 4.0 Ive only just started reading the latest one for Exchange 2007 and so far this book has exceeded my expectations. The differences in Exchange 2007 from previous versions are vast, but Tony passes on this knowledge to the reader in a gentle, logical and very readable fashion. I had to smile when previous versions of Exchange were described as "...more like a monolithic messaging behemoth"!

3 out of 5 stars Good, but publicly available on the Web.......2007-03-27

I find this book a good mate for everyone who likes more reading on printed paper rather than a pc screen.
Through the pages you'll find plenty of examples and advices, expecially in the FAQ sections, but on the other side every single word is already available on the samba's official site.
Maybe, if this book was cheaper, people could buy it and place it on their desktop as a trusted fella.

5 out of 5 stars Long story shortened..........2007-02-17

This handy book takes common tasks and presents how to accomplish them, but it does more than that - it puts context around the dry reference material I usually end up using. That context makes a difference and ends up saving me time when I want to accomplish some task I don't do every day.

This book is a time and headache saver.

5 out of 5 stars Great Examples for Samba 3.......2005-12-23

The name says it all. This book is an excellent guide for the latest version of Samba. From small networks to enterprise level integration, Terpstra walks the user through examples.

I recommend this book not only for the great examples, but because it is great at instruction. In the first chapter it reviews network scanning and nessus as a way of troubleshooting and understanding the protocols. This kind of instruction is hard to find in most books.

Another great feature of this book is the breadth of the subjects covered. From active directory to ldap to kerberos and security - I was impressed with just the table of contents.

Overall, you can find more in-depth coverage of any of the individual topics in the book, but no one source quite like this one. It is a great book both for novices and for experienced administrators newly faced with unix/windows integration with samba.

5 out of 5 stars Examples thgat Work.......2005-11-24

Most books either provide untested examples for how to do this sort of thing, and so can only be taken as illustrative, and/or they cover a very narrow range of tasks. Terpstra has done neither: he's provided examples that actually work, that have been tested in operational environments, and he has provided a broad range of examples, examples that are useable regardless of the network type in place.

Further, he has written this book in a very accessible way. While Samble-3 is targeted at Readers with experience in networking, this book is useable by newbies, as well. Although Terpstra provides some rationale for his setups, his step-by-step directions simply can be followed in cookbook fashion until experience teaches more broadly.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing like specific examples to see how to do something.......2005-09-17

Using Linux in a Windows desktop environment requires the use of Samba for file and print sharing via the Windows explorer. But Samba has grown up as a full-fledged package for communicating between Linux and Windows over the last few years. Installing Samba as a Primary Domain Controller, implementing ldap for easy directory integration, or just installing it as a file and print server are all easy to do with the help of this book. The author takes a much easier to follow approach than most other writers on this subject. Instead of trying to go through each of the features and discuss them in detail he organizes the book by the type of installation and then walks you through a correct setup for that situation. For example some of the sections are: No-frills Samba Servers, Small Office Networking, Secure Office Networking, The 500-User Office, A Distributed 2000-User Network, Migrating NT4 Domain to Samba-3, and Migrating Netware Server to Samba-3. For each one of these situations the author dissects the technical issues, discusses each one, and then walks the reader through the implementing. The author also includes sections on things like performance, reliability, LDAP, and updating Samba. Nothing is left unexplained but each time you are told to check something or do something the exact syntax for doing it is given. Even with only very little or no Linux experience you can walk through this book and install a correctly functioning Samba server. Samba-3 by Example is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book For Trainers.......2005-10-04

This book is wonderful, especially if you plan to get your CTT+ certification. I am reading it now for the second time. Too many other books on this subject cite rules and techniques without explanation. This book gives you the rules AND clear, actionable methods to follow them to achieve results in the classroom.

4 out of 5 stars Good Prep for CTT exam, but you still need much more.......2002-10-09

This is a very useful book to help prepare for the CTT exam; and considering the fact that it isn't that expensive - I recommend it. However, be aware that it is only a helpful tool and not anywhere close to a complete or comprehensive study guide - although, as far as I know, this is the best thing available. That is because there is almost nothing else available. You can go out to the Comptia site and through them get official materials - however, these materials are EXTREMELY VAGUE & EXTREMELY SUBJECTIVE. In my mind, they really aren't worth getting; and I've had both the Competencies Booklet and their nearly useless Videotape.
This book weighs in at close to 400 pages, but it is a really quick read - even for a slow-poke reader like me. And the 2 authors break the book down to analyze the competencies in real human terms, as opposed to the vague generalities that fill the official booklet. They also provide lots of very helpful & useful observations that will help you as an instructor - even if they don't relate directly to the exam.
There are 2 shortfalls with this book however.
ONE, they have quite a number of practice questions in the book. But these will not prepare you in the least, for the real CTT written exam. Their questions are quite good; but way too straight-forward. The CTT exam is the most insane, subjective exam I've ever seen; and as a bootcamp instructor for nearly 3 years; I've taken close to 100 certification exams from about 8 different vendors. Their questions are a good start, but you need to go out to google and search on "CTT practice". I found 2 practice exams when I took this... Both of these practice question sets were wild & flakey; but they got me in the right frame of mind for the insanity that is the: "CTT written exam" - it was much crazier. And without seeing those practice questions, I would not have even scored 25%, let alone pass. There is a certain type of wrong /insane answer that you need to learn how to recognize in order to pass that test.
THE SECOND SHORTFALL WITH THIS BOOK IS THAT IT SAYS NOTHING TO HELP YOU WITH THE VIDEOTAPE YOU MUST SUBMIT AS THE 2ND STEP TOWARDS THE CTT Certification. It does reprint the CTT handbook that was current when the book was published, and that does contain references to the videotape you must prepare - but it is again, extremely vague. The official videotape that you can get through COMPtia, is likewise, extremely vague, and in my opinion
nearly worthless.
...

4 out of 5 stars Effective Preparation for Certified Technical Trainer Exam.......2001-08-09

Major computer hardware and software vendors such as Microsoft, Oracle, Sun, Cisco Systems, Adobe, Novell, and others demand competency in their instructors. Acceptable proof of competency is a Certified Technical Trainer (CTT) certification.

It's a multiple choice test, and as a holder of 2 Engineering degrees from the University of Illinois, extensive experience in Project Management, and being a Certified Toastmaster, I thought "How hard could this be?"

Frankly, its the toughest test I ever took. Whoever wrote it, was diabolical. And, I had prepared and prepared well. An essential --but not the only-- preparation was thoroughly reading this book and working ALL of the exercises twice.

The book is well organized, well written, includes good exercises, and clear instructions on how to apply for and take both the computer portion of the test, and the video tape submission. However, do not expect to pass the test after reading this book alone. Seek out practice exams, talk to others who have taken the test, and of course, actual class room experience should be part of your preparation.

I would have appreciated citations to additional preparation resources such as practice tests, and websites.

Book Description

"As chip size and complexity continues to grow exponentially, the challenges of functional verification are becoming a critical issue in the electronics industry. It is now commonly heard that logical errors missed during functional verification are the most common cause of chip re-spins, and that the costs associated with functional verification are now outweighing the costs of chip design. To cope with these challenges engineers are increasingly relying on new design and verification methodologies and languages. Transaction-based design and verification, constrained random stimulus generation, functional coverage analysis, and assertion-based verification are all techniques that advanced design and verification teams routinely use today. Engineers are also increasingly turning to design and verification models based on C/C++ and SystemC in order to build more abstract, higher performance hardware and software models and to escape the limitations of RTL HDLs. This new book, Advanced Verification Techniques, provides specific guidance for these advanced verification techniques. The book includes realistic examples and shows how SystemC and SCV can be applied to a variety of advanced design and verification tasks."

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2007-08-16

Anyone with any experience running simulation will not find anything in this book besides frustration. System C examples are woefully incomplete, without even one useful example. The authors attempt to describe semi advanced techniques without even laying out the basics of instantiating a complete test bench structure properly. About the only thing useful are flow charts of a proper testbench.

4 out of 5 stars practical examples.......2006-12-07

Practical book with some good examples we could use in our training. It will be more helpful if the examples are converted to latest versions of SystemC.

2 out of 5 stars A poorly written but comprehensive book.......2005-07-11

This book is very poorly written. I don't know how it got past editors, but it is full of grammatical errors (about 5-10 per page), and unfortunately the errors get in the way of reading the material. Explanations are also poor, and knowledge is assumed without prior explanation. They even describe files that are not in the book itself, but are only visible from a web site! Some sentences make no sense at all. The text sometimes refers to the wrong figures. However, they do try and be comprehensive, and cover a huge amount of practical material. It is short on theory or any justification for many of the assertions they make. Some almost throw-away comments indicate they know their stuff well, but this book is very much for advanced practitioners only. I can't help feeling that some of it was directly transcribed from notes they made to themselves when they were bored in meetings. They tried to use previous projects as real-world examples, but the examples are so complex that you can't follow them unless you have expertise in various areas already (e.g. OC-48, OC-192, ATM, etc).

Sometimes all one needs to finally "get" a concept is to hear it reworded in a friendly, less technical way. Top Web designer Slocombe (urban75.org) demystifies the entire Web site production process with a fun, slang-filled text in Max Hits: Building and Promoting Successful Websites. He makes ideas that novices often find confusing, like XML, SVG, and CSS, seem easy and points the way to further reading and useful applications. Not strictly a how-to manual, the book is rich with screen shots and bite-size blocks of text, with a hip layout by Bark Design that makes it more entertaining than most technical books.

Slocombe dispenses a lot of hard-earned wisdom. Rather than teaching all of HTML, he gives a simple tutorial that gets across the main idea of how tags work and then sends the reader off to look at source code, consult online resources, and/or use an HTML editor like Homesite. When discussing how wide a site should be, he gets right to the crux of the problem: should a Web designer worry about how the site looks on every monitor from plasma to PDA? What are the pros and cons of specifying the table tag width at 100 percent? Again, he points the way to places online where readers can check how their site displays in different browsers and resolutions.

Pros and cons come into play in most Web site design decisions. For example, developers must weigh design versus download time or latest technology versus browser compatibility. These decisions are unique to each site and Slocombe helps readers make knowledgeable choices. His advice can be as simple as hitting the auto button on the levels panel in Photoshop to clear up a muddy photograph or as complex as delivering appropriate content to your audience.

This is a hip book that looks at all the details involved in making a Web site. It's well written, well designed, well coded, and gets lots of attention from search bots. And it clues readers in to some of the coolest sites existing on the Web today. It may just be the pat on the fanny you need to get off to a good start with your own Web site. --Angelynn Grant

Book Description

With the emphasis firmly on creativity and individualism, Max Hits aims to encourage readers to be experimental and bold in order to produce an original and compelling website that will keep visitors coming back for more.

Debunking many of the myths and obstacles surrounding web design, Max Hits proves that you don?t need big budgets or the latest technology to produce a successful site. Readers can discover how to benefit from research and planning, and learn the practical processes of design, navigation and content management. Key issues such as accessibility, usability and information architecture are discussed and analyzed with case studies and examples. But successful web sites aren?t just built: they have to be actively promoted and marketed. Max Hits shows you how to construct and deliver an effective on-line marketing strategy, how to provide "sticky" content, and how to bump your site up the search engine rankings.

1 out of 5 stars Totally Worthless.......2006-07-29

This book gets 1 star because it has nice pictures of web sites and therefore might make a good coffee table book. It has little or no content of use for any person who has even gotten on to the internet. For example, the chapter discussing Drop Down Menus says "These can be an effective tool for presenting multiple choices in a small space." Duh! It then gives a few links to sites where you can supposedly download free drop down menu scripts.

I bought the book because of the two 5 star reviews. I now believe that the author himself wrote those reviews. I can't believe that a non-biased reviewer would ever give this book more than 1 star.

I also bought "Small Websites, Great Results" by Doug Addison. That book is not perfect (mainly because he references live web sites as examples and of course they are always changing), but I got more useful information from 5 pages of his book than I got out of the entire "Max Hits" book.

Save your money!

5 out of 5 stars This should be on every designer's bookshelf!.......2002-10-14

An intern brought in a copy of this book into the office and before I knew it, all the designers were demanding they got a copy too!

It's a great book that deals with the stuff that's often forgotten when building a site - like explaining the benefits of good planning from the outset and then getting the thing ranked highly on search engines!

5 out of 5 stars I love it!.......2002-02-12

Got the book yesterday and didn't put it down till I read the whole thing from cover to cover! This is great book for anyone wanting to learn the best way to plan, prepare and promote a website and the author's succinct and witty style doesn't make it feel like a class lecture! The in-depth guides about search engines and information architecture means I've learnt how to get my next site right from the start and there's some great inspirational illustrations in there too.

What does it feel like to create a major commercial Web site? And what do you have to do to make it succeed? David Siegel's new Secrets of Successful Web Sites gives us a close look at 15 high-profile projects and extracts the hard lessons that they can teach. Anyone embarking on a big development project, whether as a designer, producer, or client, will do well to consider them.

Siegel's premise is that commercial Web design is an exciting and noble undertaking, but one that is fraught with pitfalls. His goal is to help both designers and their clients understand what they are getting into, what each side needs to bring to the table, and what both sides must do to communicate effectively. He also addresses the practical realities that make or break a project, figuring out what a particular Web site is supposed to do, how long will it take to build, what it will cost, and how it will be maintained.

The first half of the book consists of case studies of the creation--often painful--of successful Web sites. The hurdles these developers faced include hopelessly unrealistic schedules, flaky subcontractors, confused clients, and the immaturity of Web technology itself. Each study showcases the particular problems that the designers faced, how they managed to overcome them, and how you can avoid finding yourself in the same spot. The second half of the book is a systematic exposition of the ropes: What the market realities are, how designers and clients find each other, how to put together a proposal and bid on a job, and how to manage a project using Web technology. Siegel also takes you through the creation of content and design, staffing the fledgling site, testing it, and finally getting it online.

Organizational nitty-gritty of this sort is the less glamorous side of building a site, but Siegel injects it with the same excitement that made his Creating Killer Web Sites a smash bestseller. Anyone involved in creating a real Web site will find excellent practical orientation and a lot of much-needed debunking in Secrets of Successful Web Sites.

    Book Description

Much of the book consists of visual case studies that give information that most sites won't give out- what worked for them, why and exactly how. Readers learn the insider secrets of successful business planning, budgeting, and collaboration. Each case study explores both the client and developer point of view, so readers can see for themselves what works and what doesn't. This book gives clients everything they need to guarantee a successful site and gives Web developers everything they need to guarantee a successful Web business.

2 out of 5 stars Treats project management as a graphic design process.......2005-10-05

I had high hopes for this book when I started reading it. After all, David Seigel is highly regarded around Internet circles as a web design guru. Unfortunately, Siegel's graphic design background permeates his company's project management philosophy for building web sites. Basically, he advocates managing the process of building web sites like you would manage a graphic design project. Whether you agree with this or not (personally I don't), this book only contains about one-tenth of the project management depth of Steve McConnell's 'Software Project Survival Guide'.

    4 out of 5 stars Oldie but a Goodie.......2004-11-16

This book along with "Creating Killer Websites" should be a must have for any web designer. Yes, the books are getting a little old now and date them selves in regards to discussions about technology. But the books hold up over time with their common sense approach to project managment and design theory. These books are well worth the read.

1 out of 5 stars Pretentious waste of time.......2002-07-14

... This book is aimed at graphic designers, marketing agencies and the like who put together nice marketing oriented sites, whose sole job is marketing the company. For people such as myself who implement lage scale ebusiness websites, intranets, corporate portals etc there is nothing. The concept of dynakic database driven sites isn't even mentioned.

These projects are a cross between an IT project (with all the traditional skills and techniques that implies) and a maketing project (such as a TV campaign). There are multiple wildly different and largely incompatibel skillsets at work and these have to be welded together to promoite efficiency, while not destroying the motivation and qualities of the diverse people involved.

Traditional IT managemnt skills have to blend with the world of the graphic designer and the business analyst. This book doesn't even start to cover that. An utter waste of time.

Added to this I personally find david siegel's designs immensely overrated.

5 out of 5 stars Walking Your Web Talk.......2002-03-07

David Siegel's Secrets... is probably the only book you'll need for creating effective web projects. Good for beginners and pros! The best place I've seen for working with the entire project, small or large, not just the web site! The format of the book is exciting and sensible. The pages of the book are colorful and enticing! The language is fun and professional! I especially appreciate that there is a web site to accompany the book. The Sidebars are helpful hints and summaries, reinforcing the text and bulleting quick info.
I have highlighted, earmarked, bookmarked, circled and scribbled in this book. It's a book lover's dream and a web designer's partner! Great price here, too! Thanks for the fun learning experience in a ponderous realm, David!

4 out of 5 stars Great lessons learned.......2001-10-17

This book is great for its lessons learned with the projects discussed in the first part. The second part on project management contains less new information for anyone who has any project management experience.
