Book Description
In his best-selling The Cortisol Connection, Dr. Shawn Talbott explained how elevated levels of the cortisol hormone, when triggered by stress, will increase appetite, enhance fat storage, disrupt blood sugar control, and eventually lead to obesity that can cause diabetes and other serious conditions. This concise follow-up puts Talbott's cortisol control, diet, and exercise ideas into an accessible format.
The Cortisol Connection Diet shows beleaguered dieters how to eat for quality and for quantity at every meal. It focuses on the quality of carbs, fats, and proteins as well as the quantity, and explains how to use food, exercise, and dietary supplements to control cortisol and blood sugar. Most importantly, the book shows readers how to change their metabolic response to food and shed those seemingly impossible last 20 pounds. Included are a three-week log to chart diet, exercise, and supplements; and a sample regimen for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and supplements.
Customer Reviews:
The Cortisol Connection Diet - A "Must Read"!.......2004-12-08
If you have read any "diet" books from the past 10 years, and then attempted in vain to follow the advice in those books, you will really enjoy and appreciate reading the Cortisol Connection Diet. For starters, it's a very "easy read". It's as though you are listening to a casual conversation from a friend. The information is presented in a logical and easy to follow manner. I read the book cover to cover on a short plane ride. There were two particular aspects of the book that I thought were very unique and extremely helpful. First are the highlights at the end of each chapter. I have found myself on numerous occasions, going back to the book, reviewing the chapter highlights and quickly getting the information I was looking for. Secondly, the sample menu plans and daily logs at the end of the book were great! I would put this on anyone's "must read list"!
At last! The correct diet for stress symptoms!.......2004-12-04
I don't do stress well at all! After years as a first grade teacher and a stressful personal life, stress almost hospitalized me. Couldn't eat, couldn't sleep. I was running on a pure histamine. My adrenals were shot-no emergency energy! I was covered with rash, depressed when I could come down enough. My muscles were wasting away. Then my thyroid crashed and I could barely drag my legs around to walk. After the thyroid started up again, the doctors "blood type diet" didn't do much. Then I saw an article on Dr. Talbott in a magazine and followed the advice while I waited for the book to arrive. I've only been on the plan for 10 days and the depression is gone and, oh, yes the brain fog. I can do 30 minutes a day on my crosstrainer. I am sleeping better and feel more positive. All this after I had to quit work five years ago because this syndrome is so debilitating. Great book! Read it! Use it! It's for everyone since we're all living under stress. I'm into The Cortison Connection now. I fell like I'm giving myself a second chance at life and loving it.
If you're tired of starving to loose weight and want to eat to achieve a healthy body and spirit, this is the best. I don't have those awful sugar cravings anymore. Did I mention I was on heavy Prednisone for five years and had drug-induced hypoglycemia? Anyway, this food plan (it's not a diet because you're never hungry) is perfect. I was never able to get the weight to drop off and now it's coming off.
Thanks, Dr. Talbott. People like you come along far too infrequently. Penecillin and the polio vaccines for the 20th century. Obesity for the 21st! If anyone should question this books importance, open your eyes to how few fit people you see. We've been "digging our own graves with a spoon"! Examine the statistics. It makes perfect SENSE. It's soooo simple!
An excellent follow up with an easy to follow plan.......2004-12-01
I picked up The Cortisol Connection on a business trip a year ago and read it cover to cover on the flight home to Boston. It was an easy read that provided lots of information about the science behind stress and its affect on the body. As a salesperson doing lots of travel it really was an eye opener on what stress was doing to my body.
My wife (mother to 3 kids under 5 at the time) also found Dr. Talbott's book to be extremely informative. Having tried different diets and weight loss supplements, she appreciated finally having information about how stress was affecting her ability to "shed the pounds".
In his second book, The Cortisol Connection Diet, Dr. Talbott provides more useful information and concrete examples of how to use his "SENSE" program to lead to an overall healthier lifestyle. Both my wife and I enjoyed this book as much as the first (it was an even easier read!!!)and look forward to putting some of the additional "tidbits" on reducing stress and proper diet to use.
If you've read the first book, you'll find this an excellent follow up. If you haven't read the first book, this one definitely stands on its own, although I'd recommend both.
Solid easy to read information.......2004-11-30
The two books..the Cortisol Connection and The Cortisol Diet are a must read for anyone stressed from everyday life. Dr. Talbott offers recommendations on diet, lifestyle and supplements which are not only easy to follow, they make a profound difference to your health. You don't have to be overwheight to take advantage of this diet. Its a diet for anyone that is stressed from life.
Reader from DC.......2004-11-22
Excellent book! I have only recently heard about Cortisol and the roll it plays in weight gain, and Talbott does a good job of explaining how it works. I feel as though he were writing about me. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because I felt he could have explained more about eating on the plan itself, instead of just giving an example for one day of meals.

Book Description
No cravings. No stress. No fatigue.
Finally, a diet you can feel good about!
Introducing The Feel-Good Diet, a scientific breakthrough in weight loss that will help you:
- Turn off your hunger
- Turn on your energy
- Tone up your body
- And "yo-yo" no more!
The Feel-Good Diet is a revolutionary weight-loss program that works with you, not against you. Cheryle Hart, M.D., and Mary Kay Grossman, RD, reveal that many other diets cut out essential carbs and pack on too much protein, which depletes your brain's neurotransmitters, especially serotonin. This "yo-yo brain" effect zaps your willpower and leaves you irritable, depressed, and carbo-craved.
The Feel-Good Diet helps you battle "yo-yo brain" and finally win your war with your weight. With a few simple guidelines and easy-to-prepare menus, you can eat delicious, healthy foods that actually boost your serotonin levels--so you can lose weight, end cravings, reduce stress . . . and feel good.

Feel Good.......2007-07-29
The authors take the yo-yo weight loss and weight gain syndrome out of the equation with a comprehensive look at hormone related stress factors and weight gain on the reader's body. With detailed explanation on why this occurs and how to prevent weight gain from repeating by balancing out your diet with proper foods.
The Feel Good Diet teaches the reader how to improve eating habits for a healthier, well balance eating lifestyle.
This time it was my husbands turn to lose weight...........2007-05-29
Everyone knows I am the biggest fan of Cheryle R. Hart and Mary Kay Grossman for writing The Insulin-Resistance Diet book which forever changed my life.
After losing 40+ pounds on my own and still having high cholesterol and still being 60 pounds overweight (not to mention feeling terrible) I needed answers. My OB/GYN found the problem and suggested The Insulin-Resistance Diet book by Hart and Grossman. I am now a total of 100 pounds lighter (50+ pounds thanks to the Insulin Resistance Diet), my cholesterol is normal and my Insulin levels are normal. I have kept the weight off for 2 years and couldn't love my life more.
My husband on the other hand had a much harder time over the Holidays and I decided The Feel Good Diet was what he needed to take off the weight. The two of us loved the book because it spoke to us from different angles. My husband is very analytical and likes to know how the clock works, I on the other hand, just want to know what time it is. The Feel Good Diet works because it gives you the "why" and "how" all in one book.
The biggest change for me was the quality of sleep I now enjoy after having my Evening Seretonin-Boosting Snack. The S'More Serotonin Snack is to die for or an evening watching a movie while snacking on popcorn made my husband very happy. The other significant change was our energy levels in the afternoon by incorporating the afternoon snack.
Cheryle Hart and Mary Kay Grossman not only wrote books which allowed me to lose weight and changed my life but they educated me about my body and empowered me to be able to keep the weight off. To be able to live a life where you control your weight instead of the food controlling your weight is AMAZING!!!!
Bottom Line, Does it Work? Yes it Does.......2007-04-28
People who have dieted as long as I have know about dieting. We've read the new books, tried new ways of dealing with our persistent problem.
Normal weight people must find this confusing if they think at all about our dilemma. Why can't we just -get- the basic principle that you eat less than you expend to lose weight. Simple. Unfortunately, not that simple in our nation. Not that simple for bodies out of whack.
It is mysterious to me how people can just eat to live and not think about it 24/7. How freeing it must be to spend no time planning meals, logging calories in and out, making weight goals, etc.etc. I may never reach that level of normalacy but the principles in this book and it's predecessor The Insulin Resistance DietThe Insulin-Resistance Diet : How to Turn Off Your Body's Fat-Making Machine, help me see what is possible.
As a dieter I want to know one thing before I put money out on a new diet book. Does it help, does it work? Is this book going to give me some vital piece of information that will help me change my life? The answer to those questions is yes, this book does help, work and give vital information. The authors encourage you to change by slowly changing one new behavior at a time until you've changed your habits even if this process takes months. We want what we want when we want it which is usually now, but that is a formula for failure in any major life change.
I didn't expect this book to be significantly different from Dr. Hart and Ms Grossman's first book, The Insulin Resistance Diet but it is. If possible, I really recommend buying both books and reading the Insulin Resistance Diet first. Although the Feel Good Diet continues and expounds upon the material in the Insulin Resistance Diet, both books stand on their own. The Feel Good Diet is better understood if you read the Insulin Resistance Diet first. If you don't want to buy the Insulin Resistance Diet, go to your public library. The IR Diet is the philosophical underpinning for the Feel Good Diet. When you eat the Insulin Resistance way, there is a calm that settles over you which makes your life and the changes you'll be making so much easier.
I also suggest reading this book completely through before trying ANY of the suggestions. Don't go off half cocked, as I did. The apple cider vinegar Vinegar, Apple Cider, Unfiltered, Raw, Organic, 32 oz.works and works well. In my opinion, it doesn't taste bad either. You might add low glycemic agave nectarAgave Nectar Liquid Sweetener, Light, Squeeze Bottle, Organic, 8 oz., to sweeten rather than other, especially artificial, sweeteners. I don't use a sweetener. It's helpful to increase your intake of minerals before you start on the vinegar. The book lists natural sources of minerals. It is also good to increase the supplements you take as suggested in the book before you start taking the 5HTP.
The book talks about sublingual 5HTP in the form of craniyums. I have benefited from 5HTPSecrets of 5-HTP: Nature's Newest Super Supplement, it gives me time to make better food choices and drastically lowers my chocolate cravings. Although I do have some stomach upset when taking regular 5HTP I am still in the early stages of deciding whether craniyums are a better source of 5HTP. Not everyone has stomach problems with 5HTP. Most of the serotonin receptors in the body are in the gut area, the second brain, as Dr. OZ says.
This book has simple menus which help you reorganize your eating, it deals with acid, alkaline issues which are very important for overall health and it deals in detail with why we need increased serotonin and dopamine precursors to be successful at dieting. All of this is sanely given with an understanding that major changes do not happen overnight.
I found out that I suffer with Seasonal Affective Disorder about 10 years agoWinter Blues, Revised Edition: Everything You Need to Know to Beat Seasonal Affective Disorder. I know what low serotoin feels like but didn't connect it with insulin resistance until I read The Insulin Resistance Diet about a year ago. Most of the weight I've gained has happened in the winter of each year when my serotonin is extremely low. If you gain 10 lbs a year over a period of many years, you end up with a weight problem. If you use food to supply the brain chemicals you need to feel good, you end up with a weight problem. And weight problems eventually lead up to many, many other physical, mental, emotional and relational problems, as we all know.
So bottom line, yes I do recommend this book.

The Feel Good Diet by Hart MD and Grossman RD
by Dr. Joseph S. Maresca PhD
Overall, the book is well-researched. The findings make sense. There are good references cited from authoritative journals; namely,
- American J of Physiology
- Nutrition and American J of Clinical Nutrition
- European J of Pharmacology and Endocrinology
- J of Psychosomatic Research
- J of the American Dietetic Association
- J of Affective Disorders and J of Transmissions - Brain Research
- Exercise and Sports Science Reviews and many others
In the authors' next book, I would include some citations from The Lancet.
The book claims to assist in crafting a personal diet regimen that boosts serotonin, improves mood and maintains the weight loss into the future. Serotonin improves well being, controls cravings and contributes materially to the sense of well being.
The authors describe how serotonin is made via minerals and cofactor vitamins. Certain habits and foods contribute toward a neurotransmitter deficiency by the authors. These aspects include smoking, drinking, sugar, starch, chocolate, tobacco and carbs by late afternoon or evening. The thyroid and testosterone are the hormones of the metabolism. Testosterone can be measured via saliva or blood testing. DHEA or medications can be taken orally to increase the production of testosterone according to the authors. Calcium in the carbonate form is the preferred vitamin for weight loss together with stress control.
Plain or low fat yogurt has the highest calcium (Ca.) content according to
the authors. The low insulin spike foods are meats (low fat) , fish, poultry, eggs, low fat/sugar dairy, legumes, dried beans, nuts and seeds. There is an extensive section on sample foods. Omega 3 and 6 are the preferred "good fats". Super pH water is known to boost metabolism. More sample recipes are listed in Chapter 14.
After having had numerous medical encounters, I consolidated the advice of several physicians and my personal experience into a food/lifestyle profile which has helped me. This includes the following:
o frequent exercise (cardio and cycling)
o control over late day eating or eating after 8 PM
o bottled water, tea, caffeine-free coffee, occasional diet soda, low alcohol content white or red wine AS GOOD SUBSTITUTES for canned soda,
coffee with caffeine, higher content alcohol (> 10%)
o plantains, nuts and seeds as a substitute for potato chips and pop corn
o low triglyceride restaurant foods
o control over gluten consumption
o less protein to control proteinuria and protect the kidneys
o sugar free candies as a substitute for candy bars of all kinds and snack cravings
This regimen (by my own personal experience ) will take off 20-30 pounds permanently and improve blood chemistry in the area of glucose control, the SED RATE, the triglyceride totals and several other blood factors. It will help with the micro-crystalline measurements done by the Endocrinologist for pre-diabetic states. Long term application may help with the more chronic forms of progressive diabetes , pancreatic damage and
chronic diverticulitis which impacts everyone incrementally after age 40.
The book is recommended highly for anyone beginning the process of life-long weight management and/or more healthful eating. The acquisition is priced reasonably.
Lose your weight, not your mind.......2007-02-01
Cheryle Hart, M.D. writes a very compelling book. The part that really speaks to me is the part about how while on Atkins I may have lost weight, but I also felt a little off, even a little depressed. Now I know that because I did not have enough Carbs, I lost serotonin, and like she said I lost my mind. While the book seems to be aimed towards women, it has been very helpful to me, too. Now I have two ways to increase my serotonin. One way is to eat my serotonin raising snacks and if that is not enought, I can get neurotransmitter precursors like 5-HTP and tyrosine. Thank you Dr. Hart.

Book Description
Complementary medicine nutritionist and Ayurveda instructor Jennifer Workman's new and sensible approach to dieting has helped countless people to understand and work with their natural cravings to achieve and maintain their ideal weight. As the first Western nutritionist to make the ancient Ayurvedic principles practical and applicable, Workman explains why certain foods, including simple spices and culinary herbs like cinnamon, cocoa, cardamom, turmeric, cumin, basil, ginger, and wasabi can have a beneficial effect on weight-loss efforts, digestion, and health. In Stop Your Cravings Workman shows how eating the right combination of foods and flavors for certain body types and lifestyles, along with yoga and exercise, can diminish cravings to the point that food is no longer an issue of stress and worry.
Using a weight-loss and management program enlightened by the basic principles of Ayurveda, the five-thousand-year-old Eastern medical system, Workman guides readers in restoring the body's natural balance to improve overall health. By understanding the basic components of Ayurveda, which Workman introduces through simple examples, charts, and a self-test, readers will learn how their food choices (even the ones they thought were "healthy") can exacerbate health problems, including gastrointestinal disturbances, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, weight gain, arthritis, acne, headaches, menopausal symptoms, and PMS.
Most experts now agree that not everyone should eat the same thing or do the same type of activity because each person's metabolism and genetic makeup are different. Using the Stop Your Cravings self-test, readers can identify their own body and personality type and learn to understand what their body needs and how it responds to food, to the weather, and to everyday events in their lives. The Balanced Approach is a personalized nutrition/eating program of "clean" proteins, "good" fats, and non-gluten carbohydrates that emphasizes the sensuality of spices and flavors that add taste without adding calories.
A wise and sustainable program that improves health and longevity, Stop Your Cravings is ahead of the curve as more and more of us turn to holistic approaches to living.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome book.......2002-09-27
I've been looking for something that goes beyond traditional Western nutrition--the dogma of the macronutrient wars that we're all so familiar with (high carb/no fat, low-carb, etc...) and focuses on my individual needs, which can change. I checked out this book by chance, and was pleasantly surprised--it really just made sense of everything.
This is truly an East meets West approach to healthy eating--it combines the best of both approaches and makes the more unfamiliar Eastern approach very accesible. I think that the title "Stop Your Cravings" may not catch enough people's attention--it goes way beyond that. Don't be put off that this has an Ayurvedic slant--the menus and recipes span the globe from Indian and Asian to Mediterranean and even American cuisine. It's refreshing to see a diet book acknowledge that everyone is different and that some people (such as myself) will thrive on a lower carb/higher protein diet while others do better on a higher carb diet... dairy is fine for some but congestive and mucus forming for others... and high-gluten grains (which include the overrated "whole wheat" products) should be reduced for most people (not completely avoided) and low-gluten grains (rice, millet, quinoa) are favored.
I also like the exercise recommendatioins based on your Ayurvedic type--it really helped steer me in a direction where I now feel like I'm getting the right exercise for me. The fact that one of the most respected people in strength training endorsed the book (see Charles Poliquin's comments on the back cover) really made me give this book a serious look--and I'm glad I did.
Basically this book ackowledges (even celebrates) individuality and doesn't prescribe a rigid "one size fits all" regimen of diet or exercise. It's WAY beyond the typical diet and exercise book--it gives you the information to make choices that will help you achieve lasting health and weight loss based on your preferences and constitution.
I can't recommend it highly enough.
Finally! Someone puts it all together in 1 book.......2002-04-16
This one is a keeper! Take it from someone who has read 20+ books lately on diet and nutrition and holistic healing. Jennifer Workman puts it all together in one volume. This is a comprehensive approach to your total health; mind, body & spirit.
Her dietary recommendations around sugar and highly refined carbohydrates are in agreement with many others - don't eat them except in very small quantities. There is a quiz to determine your Ayurvedic type - Vata, Pitta or Kapha, with specific recommendations for each type from food to exercise.
Cravings are a GOOD thing!.......2002-01-09
It's the new year. Time for those annoying resolutions - the `fridge at work is jammed with co-workers' lunches who have decided to eat healthy, the fitness club is jammed with new people lifting weights and trotting on treadmills. And the bookstores are jammed with "new you" diet books, everybody claiming to have the ANSWER that we need. Don't make the mistake of lumping Jennifer Workman's book in with the others; it simply stands alone in its own special category. At its heart is Ayurveda, a 5000-year old Indian medical practice. You can't go wrong with something so timely. Combine that with a solid fitness and nutritional background, and you have someone who can help us make it in the modern world.
The book does focus on food but it's more than that - understanding why we grab certain foods, why some foods may not work well in some situations (cayenne aggravates someone like me in the dead heat of summer while a good friend thinks it's just fine), and why certain kinds of exercise don't get the weight off and why yoga does help a lot. The food is all do-able --- from the ginger, lemon, and honey-laced green tea (OK, I gave up coffee as the first thing to my lips in the morning) to kale sauteed with garlic and onions. What we don't want to give up is taste and Workman beautifully explains how to integrate the basic principles into daily eating. Nobody looks at my lunches and exclaims, "Oh yuck! WHAT are you eating now???" It's easy to move in and out of restaurants making interesting yet delicious choices based on my metabolism and genetic makeup without even thinking about it. Yes, chocolate is part of the plan! No guilt. Just good food.
The book takes on new meaning with all the stress inflicted upon us after September 11. How do we make everything stay in balance without stressing out and gaining a few tons? Jennifer's program isn't just about eating - it is about whole life, encompassing the mental, emotional and spiritual parts, too. Everything truly does work together. Lofty? Not really. It makes sense that at the end, she addresses the big picture and world hunger. How many diet books are concerned about that? Better hang onto this one.

Part II, Bring in the Beautiful to Create a Harmonious Environment and Self, includes a chapter on Earth-based spirituality and a fascinating look at the Four Elements (Earth, Fire, Air and Water) and the Medicine Wheel. The core of Hartie s philosophy blossoms in Chapter Seven, Applying Harmonious AdjustmentsTM: Using Feng Shui and Other Techniques for Powerful Results. Unlike other Feng Shui authors, Hartie has experience as a designer and her skills are apparent in this chapter and the following two. She has combined principles of Feng Shui, the Four Elements, color, energy, Vastu, and good design principles that create a unique and eclectic approach to home decorating. Finally, Hartie provides guidance on how to manifest personal or professional desires. In Part III, Putting the Pieces Together, Hartie skillfully integrates the many subjects of the book into a unified and cohesive whole. At its cover price of $19.95, Harmonious Environment is a value alone for the comprehensive green living product suppliers in the Resources section. What makes this book so truly ambitious, however, is what lies beneath the surface. In a sense, this book is only marginal
Customer Reviews:
Transform Your Home into a Peaceful Sanctuary.......2007-04-10
"The energy from flowers is so bright and strong that they can be put anywhere in the home and they will enhance your life." ~ pg. 217
Norma Lehmeier Hartie is a design consultant and Harmonious Adjustment practitioner who enjoys gardening and cooking. She created the practice of Harmonious Adjustments to give her clients the chance to reconnect with nature and to manifest their personal and professional dreams. Through her book she introduces ideas for detoxing and decluttering your home environment.
If you want a happier, healthier lifestyle that is more in harmony with nature, then Norma Lehmeier Hartie's book has a world of information to make this possible. She can help you:
Remove toxic products from your home and garage
Clean and organize your home
Buy environmentally friendly cleaning products
Organize your home for more peace and harmony
Find healthy personal care products
Grow plants that help to control pollution - A list of the Fifty Best Houseplants
Find the best choices in flooring
Figure out how to recycle larger items like a refrigerator
Cook more safely and use kitchen scraps for your garden
Formulate a plan to keep your house clean
Organize every room in the house
Decorate with Confidence
Reading through the list of harmful products gives you an idea of the ingredients to avoid in cleaners and how they can affect your health. For an antibacterial spray, the author suggests water and essential oils and for cleaning silver she also suggests more natural solutions like baking soda and vinegar. Using Borax and water is less dangerous than chlorine bleach fumes and you may want to try this in your shower. You may enjoy products by Seventh Generation.
Chapter three felt a little out of my personal range of expertise, although we know that thoughts can affect our environment and life and can move our life in a positive or negative direction. This chapter deals more with spiritual practices. Chapter 6 also delves into a deeper connection with nature, personality types and elemental powers. The list of Yin and Yang is helpful to create a balance of the two in your home. An entire chapter is also dedicated to plants, gemstones and crystals.
"If you are the average American woman, you expose yourself to over two hundred synthetic chemicals that are found in the products you use as you prepare yourself for the day. These products do not simply sit on your skin; approximately sixty percent of these ingredients get absorbed into your bloodstream." ~ pg. 91
Chapter four is especially informative and essential if you are trying to be healthier and want to find organic alternatives to products filled with synthetic chemicals. Why should you avoid petroleum and talc? Why is there lead in hair dye?
The section on an Eco-Friendly Kitchen is interesting and the chapter on natural and organic foods also gives ideas on how to save time in the kitchen. A few recipes are included:
Vegetarian Pasta Primavera
Fajitas
Risotto with Scallops or Shrimp
Lemon Rice
Grilled Vegetables
An extensive list of resources and a very handy index complete this well-researched and extremely helpful book. If you enjoy Feng Shui or decorating and organizing your home, there is a lot to enjoy and you may find the information in this book can also help with fatigue, anxiety and sleeping problems.
~The Rebecca Review
Detox Your Life.......2007-04-04
No matter what your goals are, this book has the starting point for you. Learn how to make your life less toxic and get a better relationship with Mother Earth.
Declutter, paint and detoxify.......2007-04-02
Using the principles of Feng Shui, you can create a harmonious home environment with this book as a guide.
Author Lehmeier-Hartie has you choose colors, elements and design based on your birthday. If you suffer from problems feeling disorganized or headachey at home, it could be your home is not organized properly or the flow of energy is impeded.
The author extends this tranquility to finding the right job and the right mate. Whether or not it is the alignment of elements in the home, focusing on clearing clutter in your life can only have positive effects. A very pretty book.
Life-changing ideas.......2007-02-02
Worried about what your family is being exposed to? Are you hoping to increase your wealth or find love this year? Trying to decide on the best color to paint your walls? If you answered "yes!" to any of these questions, then Harmonious Environment is a must read.
The goal of this book is to create positive energy both in your home and your life and to be kinder to the earth. Hertie is a design consultant, chef, gardener, and healer. She shares her professional and personal experiences with the readers, i.e., homemade earth-friendly cleaning products, tasty recipes for carnivores and vegetarians, etc. She recommends that after reading this book, you apply the process in the following order:
1. Remove toxic products from your home and garage
2. Clean, declutter, clear and organize your home
3. Buy/use environmentally friendly products
4. Learn how to use place objects (furniture, mirrors, etc.) to manifest change in your life
The relationship between people and the Earth is an important part of Harmonious Environments. To remind ourselves of this interconnection, Hertie recommends bringing the natural world into your home. Some ways to do this include displaying rocks and minerals and using houseplants as pollution busters.
Hertie uses Harmonious Adjustments (TM) that combines "the best principles of Feng Shui, the application of the Four Elements based on your birth date, color, Vastu, energy work and good design." I've read a few Feng Shui books in the past, but the author's clear instructions and enthusiasm has given me the confidence to actually try this at home.
I liked how the author reminded me to use this book as a guideline but to also trust my intuition. Do what looks and feels right for you. I also liked how the Resource section listed all the suppliers, organizations and further readings mentioned throughout the book.
Even if you aren't interested in Feng Shui, this book has valuable information about becoming an informed consumer and living a more eco-friendly life.
Armchair Interviews says read Harmonious Environment and get ready to change your life!
Fantastic book with tons of information.......2007-01-18
I got this wonderful book as we are moving our place of business, and wanted to make smart choices. From the first page, Ms. Lehmeier-Hartie shares her expertise in an organized, thoughtful way. The day after I got the book, I negotiated a much more logical and healthier ventilation system, and the section on colors was far and away the most organized and logical explanation I have ever seen.
Some aspects of our project are beyond our control, but I became a much more active participant. We anxiously await our new space, and know that the suggestions made here will add to the beauty and functionality of our space. I wish I could have rated this 10 stars!

Customer Reviews:
good place to start.......2003-06-19
I thought that it was a volume 2 to "walking for pleasure exercise" but it is really a revision of it. So either one is sufficent, no need for both books by this author. Covers the topics needed to get a good start on exercise walking, a little bit more on diet than the earlier book.
Informative, straightforward, no surprises nor bad advice, a worthy start to any walking library.
A good choice for beginners.......2002-01-16
Malkin's book is excellent for the beginner. I can say that because I am one.
All Malkin wants is for people to reap the benefits of exercise, all their lives, and enjoy it at the same time. His program is so hassle-free that you think it's under-acheiving, but it works.
With the facts, and a sense of humor, Dr. Malkin shows that walking is the ultimate win-win exercise, with lasting benefits.
He gives you all the basics you need, plus refined techniques, to integrate walking into your life effortlessly. Not only that, you don't have to do it every day, if you don't want to...
Thoroughly informative!.......2002-01-05
Dr. Mort Malkin is one of the nation's leading authorities on aerobic walking. He has developed clinics, programs, seminars across the states. Also, check out his other best seller, "Walking, The Pleasure Exercise."
Malkin's first attempt to persuade you to walk aerobically us by convincing you how good you will look. He will focus on the fundamentals of the whole esthetic picture, your weight, shape, posture, presence and grace, yes, grace; he believes the conveniences of modern civilization have made us into sitters instead of walkers. The computer world alone has us sitting more than ever. As for presence, Dr. Malkin says aerobic walking will bestow a more youthful appearance.
You will learn plenty on the aerobic diet guide for reducing, he informs us on carbs, proteins, fats, water, vitamins, fiber, foods with grains, salad vegetables, green and yellow vegetables, starches, dairy, fruits, etc.,
In the chapter called "How Far, How Fast, How Often", he discusses an 8-week program that is simply increasing your pace from 15 minutes at a gentle pace, every other day to 45 minutes at a very brisk pace every other day. That's all that is in the 8-week program, a doable increase in pace and time.
Included is plenty of info on preventing injuries. This is an excellent book...MzRizz
For the motivated or advanced walker.......2000-06-13
This book was fairly easy to read although it can be technical at times. The book is a good second or third step to walking for fitness but tends to leave out the beginning walker and does little to help motivate the couch potato. The book does give good advice on the importance of warming up and cooling down. Overall a good book, but not for beginners.

Reducing Stress.......2004-01-25
As the other reviewer said this book is for everyone and as the writer himself says this book wont make your stress disappear from your life it can only help you minimize it. And when I bought this book it sure did minimize my work-related stress that affected everything in my life but it still remained there.
The more I minimized it the more it grew. I never were more confused until I re-read the book only to find the line I thought I've read and there it was saying "Stress is infectious".
Soon after, I said bad-bye to the job of my dreams which shocked
the world around me when they knew how madly in love I was with that workplace. Then as I have felt it in the beginning it turned
up to be that I was drowning and that if I didn't quit that job I would have refused myself the lifejacket So my advice to all of you who deal with stupid stress generator people is :
BE BLIND, DEAF and ignore them IF YOU are that strong,
or If you're weak like "I was" create a lifejacket for yourself,
grab it, swim to some other place. And as you know it the biggest
city on earth which must have billions of work positions available is not even bigger than your smallest nail - when you look at it in the globe and an usual globe is bigger than thousands of nails put together :) Think about it!
Something else that may help you too is Charlie Chaplin's saying
"Life is a tragedy when you look at it in close up but a Comedy in long shot".
Emotional despair? Reduce Stress!.......2003-12-08
How Stressed Are You? This is the first question arising in today's Tech times. World Health Organization has predicted that by 2020, depression will be the greatest burden of ill health in the developing world and will be the second largest cause of death and disability!!!! One wonders but sure this book has a great indepth dose of Reducing Stress pills of info with analysis Quiz on Page 16 that actually lets one recognize existence of stress and later reducing it. In Analyzing the causes of Stress, society, the working world and daily life have changed almost beyond recognition in the past 50 years and these changes have contributed to a major increase in stress, says the author. Many factors add fuel to blown minds as we deal coping with daily life. The book has cool tips on Getting Organized in life itself, manage time, check the attitudinal traits, taking out time to relax, understanding personality types, building better relationships and check Health. Emotional despair is a major health disorder and so, before it's late, check those Stress flaws and learn to use mind power through Tim Hindle's book on 'Reducing Stress' - a Good Pick.
This could help anyone in the workplace!.......2001-05-08
Some of these manager books are not just for managers. They could be read and enjoyed by all employees. Of all the books I have read, this one seems to be the most wide ranging and could help everyone in your office.
Let's admit it. Work and life in general can be stressful. How we cope with stress can be a key to our success. This book will show you how to reorganize your work practices. It also explains how thinking positively can reduce stress.
"Make sure your home office is separate from your living space." -pg 25
Well, I fail that one.
"Start each day stress-free by straightening up the night before." -pg. 40
This works!
Learning to say no is something I really have to work on. Some people do find it difficult to say no because they are afraid of causing offense. Sometimes you just have to be assertive, after all, it is your life!
There is a section on making a time to relax. there are exercises and relaxation techniques you can use and this makes the book very practical. Deep breaths, deep breaths....there, see you feel so much better now. If anything helps, breathing will!

Book Description
Based on Dr. Judith Wurtman's fifteen years of groundbreaking research at M.I.T.,
The Serotonin Solution is the first book to promote weight loss and eating control through serotonin, the neurotransmitter responsible for calmness and emotional well-being. Through Wurtman's patented Serotonin Seeker's Diet, we can boost the brain's natural appetite suppressant simply by eating carbohydrates in the right amounts in combination with other foods to put an end to stress-driven emotional overeating as we lose weight.
Along with her basic diet program, Wurtman provides the optimal diet plan to use with the new FDA-approved weight-loss drug Redux -- the first new diet drug in twenty-two years!
Customer Reviews:
In answer to "What is true?".......2007-07-13
Tryptophan (a serotonin precursor) is a large amino acid not easily absorbed; carbohydrates improve tryptophan absorbtion. Fat would slow the action of the carbohydrates, so turkey on rice is better than turkey on rice with gravy for absorbing tryptophan. However, high carbohydrates trigger the release of serotonin. If it is night and you are going to bed, that might be good. If it is in the middle of the day and you are trying to build your serotonin reserves (or curb your appetite), high carbs in the absence of tryptophan are bad. Carbs must be used wisely and with purpose.
I Don't Binge Anymore!.......2001-12-20
This book has completely turned my life around. I thought my bingeing on carbs was simply a matter of willpower. After reading this book, I now understand the biological reason for it. My body was screaming for Seritonin. This book explains how to enable your body to create more seritonin without bingeing. With more seritonin, i no longer have the desire to binge. The author Judith Wurtman does an excellent job of explaining why we get uncontrollable cravings and how to qual them. She also does a great job in explaining why the 'Low Carb Diets' only make you crave carbs more. Thank God for this book. It's helped me understand how your body works and why it craves certain things at different times. Buy it, you won't regret it.
What is true?.......2000-03-20
I have read many serotonin-related books and I am quite confused. In his book "Beyond Prozac" Michael J. Norden, an eminent Psychiatrist, states that the much-publicized high-carbohydrate diet may actually make you depressed and overweight. In "Potatoes not Prozac" a high-carb plus protein diet is advocated. Dr. Joel Robertson in his "Natural Prozac" states that protein is a dopamine booster. Who should one believe? What is true and what is not? Should one accept Dr. Wurtman's approach as correct? O.K. she is an M.I.T. professor but the other authors have impressive academic credentials as well.
Finally...a system that works!.......1999-11-02
I have been using this book's recommendations religiously since August, and I've lost thirteen pounds. This is the only diet I've ever been on that has enabled me to exercise at the same time, and not become terribly depressed. The only other way I could lose weight was with diet pills, and then I couldn't exercise because I didn't have the energy. It fits my eating patterns perfectly, and I have not had any near-fainting episodes from low blood sugar in months. I also have suffered from mild obsessive-compulsiveness in the past; I believe that this diet helps control that, too. I take vitamins, fatty acids, and kava kava in addition to this diet, and I am telling everyone I know about it. Thanks so much for all your research. I would like to see a sequel with a maintenance diet plan.

Book Description
Mastering Cortisol explains why the fat that collects around the middle of the body can't simply be blamed on eating too much or not exercising enough. The real cause is stress, which triggers an imbalance of the hormone cortisol that in turn tricks the body into creating unnecessary belly fat. It's all part of the fight-or-flight response dating back to the caveman that tells the body to store up fat in times of peril.
But the cycle can be stopped: Mastering Cortisol details specific ways to counter the cortisol with a tailor-made exercise plan that will slim the belly. Based on breakthrough genetic tests, the program also recommends specific vitamins and minerals and explains which foods will work best for the reader.
Customer Reviews:
It Left Me Questioning My Medical Condition(s).......2007-09-19
There is plenty of well-displayed information about cortisol in this book. The author knows the subject and is extremely readable. But if you're suffering from a raft of vague symptoms and have read about copper overdose, chronic fatigue, vitamin B12 deficieny, adrenal fatigue, clinical depression, hypothyroidism, hormone issues, and a number of other syndromes/diseases, this book will further confuse you.
Since I started "feeling like this," I've read at least two dozen books on as many subjects. Now I know about cortisol. My doctors don't know why I feel like this and the symptoms related to cortisol are nearly identical to too many other problems.
I do have "a bit" too much copper in my system. Suggested solution? Zinc and B vitamins. I am in adrenal fatigue. Suggested solution? Less stress and B vitamins. I'm post-menopausal. Suggested solution? Contradictory. Being a vegan I have a B12 deficieny. Suggested solution? B12. I had the tests and didn't feel any better. In fact, I got depressed to the point of needing therapy. Suggested solution? Either anti-depressants (no thanks) or B12 injections. The list goes on.
My husband watched me go from a happy, active, productive human being to a depressed, sedentary, disinterested wreck. My self-help medical books are now in a box in the garage. I added a few nutritional supplements to my diet, got off my butt and started moving around again, and now look and feel one hundred percent better.
If you're wrapped up in the "could THIS be what's wrong with me" mess, try adding B12 and (for a cortisol problem) zinc citrate to your diet, read Larry Winget's "Shut Up, Stop Whining, and Get A Life," and I guarantee you'll change your health (and point of view).
I don't want to put down this book, but it really is vague and sounds like too many other "syndrome" books.
I hope this review helps someone out there . . . .

Customer Reviews:
a lovely little book .......2007-02-13
I can't imagine going wrong with any of Rosemary's books. I'm an aromatherapist and herbalist [...] and make all of my own products- and I have hundreds of books on herbs. This little book is a wonderful value for someone who would like to learn more about herbs and make their own herbal remedies. Her tea and tincture recipes are great. I prefer using essential oils to using infusions of herbs in the bath personally, but her formulas are very good- as always. If you want a more general book I would suggest her Family Herbal- which is really a wonderful, simple, treasure of a book for herbalists of all levels!
