    Book Description

Educators and social researchers spend considerable time and effort studying issues in multicultural/bilingual education, but have few opportunities to experience the subjective realities of the students themselves, this book compares these realities to a variety of viewpoints offered by high school teachers on matters of community, learning, race, culture, and school politics. The book transports aspiring teachers and others interested in race relations, educational sociology and anthropology, and Latino/Chicano studies into the daily school life of Latino high school students, revealing their feelings and often startling insights into the processes of American schooling. The book reveals shortcomings in the American educational system but offers new paths and paradigms for effective change. Sections of the text that highlight transcribed student interviews make it particularly useful as a reference for research and writing about multicultural education. For aspiring teachers and anyone interested in multicultural and multiethnic education.

      Book Description

Do you wish you could remember all the words to the childhood songs your grandmother taught you, so you could sing them to your children? Have you ever found yourself repeating the dichos, or proverbs, your parents used to lecture you with? If you are looking for a way to get back in touch with your culture, It's All in the Frijoles is the perfect start. A treasure trove of cherished folktales, lullabies, poems, and dichos, this rich collection of Latino wisdom includes inspiring recollections and anecdotes by well-known and beloved figures, both past and present -- from actor Edward James Olmos and author Isabel Allende to Nobel laureate Octavio Paz and Saint Teresa de Avila. It's All in the Frijoles is certain to evoke with fondness many a childhood memory of essential teachings learned from parents and grandparents, including:

      ***

El hombre debe ser feo, fuerte, y formal.

A man should be homely, hardy, and honorable.

El consejo de la mujer es poco y él que no lo agarra es loco.

The advice of a woman is very scarce and the person who does not heed it is crazy.

      Pueblo dividido, pueblo vencido.

A people divided, a people conquered.

      ***

It's All in the Frijoles captures and perpetuates the essence of Latino tradition and is destined to become a family treasure that is passed down from generation to generation. This legacy of wisdom provides food for thought not only for Latinos but also for people of all other ethnic backgrounds.

      5 out of 5 stars I love this book!!.......2006-01-14

This book is great, it tells many different stories from many different latinos. It also has some spanish childrens songs that even my mom knew! My favorite part of this book is the "Dichos", they have trancended generations from mexicanos to mexican americans....

      3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2003-06-07

To be honest, I expected more folktales and traditional stories from Mexico, but that's not what this is. There are about 100 contributors, each giving a personal story relating to the subject of a particular chapter. There are very few who did this for more than one chapter. This is the main component of the book. This is why I found it a hard book to read cover to cover. Since each chapter is dedicated to a particular virtue, and has a combination of "dichos," and personal stories, all of which are very short - no more than one to two pages long. While one of the reviewers found this to be a good thing, I found it distracting. Another problem is that the "dichos" are often translations of English/American sayings. While there are some sayings that seem to be universal - touch wood, for instance - I find it hard to believe that so many are.
What I was looking for was something to help me remember some of the "dichos" or stories that my mother and abuelita used, now that I have a son. I was hoping to keep some of the same sabor in our house that I grew up with. While I find this book a good additional to my library, it's not quite what I expected or hoped for and it's not better than what I expected.

5 out of 5 stars Useful and inspiring.......2002-12-10

I'm a college instructor (UCLA Extension, Loyola Marymount University Extension, The Art Institute of California - Los Angeles, and Brooks College).

In some classes, 40% of my students are Hispanic.

I read the stories in this book to them, and they find them very inspiring.

Given the short attention span of students nowadays, the fact that Nava's stories are short and to the point makes them that much more impactful.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Parents and Educators!!!.......2001-07-22

This book is great! I have been reading the stories to my middle school class of ESL students. They love it. The lessons on Respect, Honor, and Values hit home. We have posted dichos all over our room. I especially like that this book shows Hispanic people who keep thier values and culture can be rich, famous, and respected. Wonderful!!

5 out of 5 stars You don't have to be Hispanic.......2001-01-05

You don't have to be Hispanic to love this book. On these pages you will find insight and inspiration for everyone. It gives an Anglo like me an indepth view of a community filled with wisdom and bursting with great stories. I highly recommend it.

      Book Description

“There is nothing that belief plus a burning desire cannot make real.”
      –Napoleon Hill

By applying the proven principles of preparation, competence, hard work, and sincerity devised by legendary motivational author Napoleon Hill, Lionel Sosa advanced from painting signs at $1.10 an hour to running the largest Hispanic ad agency in America. In this indispensable guide to prosperity, Sosa shares his inspiring story of achievement, as well as those of other respected members of the Latino community, including:

      • Alberto Gonzales, who rose from humble roots in San Antonio and Houston to become the first Hispanic attorney general of the United States
      • Linda Alvarado, who defied both racism and sexism to head the biggest construction company in America led by a woman
      • Jeff Valdez and Bruce Barshop, the team that created SiTV, the first and only twenty-four-hour English-language cable channel aimed at Latinos
      • Patricia Diaz Dennis, who triumphed over many obstacles and personal tragedy to serve as the first Latina chair of the Girl Scouts in the United States

In a clear and encouraging voice, Sosa reveals how Napoleon Hill’s positive, practical, and empowering ideas can help Latinos overcome self-esteem issues, thrive while embracing change, and map a clear-cut plan to achieve their goals and fulfill their dreams.

5 out of 5 stars A must for Hispanics living in the US.......2006-11-21

Short and to the point, this book offers tips and insight on the advantage of being Hispanic in the United States. Many Latinos, whether they speak Spanish or not, are often not aware that they do indeed have an added advantage that stems from their heritage and roots, and, if they are bilingual, the fact that they speak one of the most important languages in the world right now.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and Beyond The Expected.......2006-11-19

This book uses insightful commentary and context while providing actionable tools to really strengthen what i think we all know is inside, but sometimes lack the know-how to leverage. With sensitivity and understanding this brings the opportunity of the usa and the nuance of latin america together.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Latino Success Story.......2005-12-22

The author worked his way up from a poverty-stricken childhood in San Antonio to become an advertising executive in the upper echelons of the business world. Henry Cisneros felt the book "captures the essence of being Latino in the U.S. today. It is a book that will touch many people deeply".

      1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2002-07-03

The book follows the typical self-help recipes: positive attitude, self-appreciation, hard work, etc. But it starts flopping when it attempts to bind those recipes with sociocultural subjects.

For example: the Spanish spoken in certain regions is, according to Mr. Sosa, inherently servile (by the way, not so with English or Portuguese????).

Negative behaviors, he essays to explain through ... anthropology and anti-hispanist slogans.

The only real asset of the book is that, when you are done reading it, you are left totally determined to succeed in life, if for nothing else, to prove Mr. Sosa that renege one's cultural inheritance is not the way.

5 out of 5 stars Read it if you are a minority!!.......2000-12-05

Mr Sosa has a brilliant message. You can succeed even though you may belong to a minority or 'disadvantaged'. Although, he shares the Latinos' experiance and the Americano dream, his story is applicable to anyone who has persistence and determination to succeed. I live in a city state where most of us come from immigrant origins and have thrived. Mr Sosa's practical and sound advice in the book is something you can immediately put to use.

5 out of 5 stars The voyage begins here.......2000-08-08

When I started to read this book I knew right away that this man had the answers I was searching for. He is on target with what it takes to make it the present US economy. I not only gained knowledge, I gained pride in my culture. I highly recommend it.

          Book Description

Latinos have a history of risk taking: coming to the United States, often under uncertain conditions, to fulfill their dreams and create better lives for their families. Against the odds, Latinos living in the U.S. have gone beyond their original goals to achieve success and happiness. They've become multimillionaire business owners, leading political figures, Hollywood celebrities, or famous athletes.

How did they do it? Notable Latina journalist Cathy "Catalina" Areu asked 34 of today's most successful Latinos just that question, and each answer changed her life. Following their words of wisdom, Cathy was inspired to leave her low-paying writing jobs to create a successful media company.

You will be inspired to follow your dreams, and create new ones, when you see the motivating stories from stars which include:

          >> Attorney General Alberto Gonzales >> Comedian/Actor Cheech Marin >> Actress Daisy Fuentes >> Comedian/Actor John Leguizamo >> Actress Rosie Perez >> Sesame Street's Sonia Manzano >> NFL Player Shaun Cody >> Actress America Ferrera

Latino Wisdom is an ideal read for everyone looking to recharge their mind, body, and soul - including you.

5 out of 5 stars Latino Wisdom Celebrates the Human Spirit.......2006-10-17

Latino Wisdom offers more than wisdom from high profile celebrities and newsmakers. It celebrates the human spirit through stories about resilience and reflection, passion and conviction, purpose and creativity. As a writer & journalist, I appreciate Cathy Areu's journalistic style in capturing the essence of successful and driven Latinos. Latino Wisdom is a treasury of inspirational stories that I'll be able to read over and over again.

          5 out of 5 stars You Don't Need A Silver Spoon.......2006-10-12

You do not have to be Latino to be inspired by Latino Wisdom. In her introduction, Cathy Areu states the most important, fundamental theme of her book--Believe In Yourself. It's a theme that can apply to anyone, whether you're born with a silver spoon in your mouth or not. This theme crops up time and again in Areu's interviews with a variety of self-made successful people, everyone from actresses and singers to politicians, football players, and business men and women. Areu, herself, is a shining example of this principle. Her story, told in her inimitable, breezy style, is every bit as inspirational as those of the people she highlights. As she says, she wasn't born with a silver spoon in her mouth, but, applying the believe-in-yourself principles that are the theme of her book, today she's a successful author, magazine publisher--and much more.
Areu's writing is warm and conversational. In her interviews she conveys a sense of ease with her subjects so that their personalities-and hers-come across the page very naturally. Latino Wisdom isn't only inspirational; it's interesting and fun to read!

5 out of 5 stars Nothing Worthwhile is Ever Easy!.......2006-07-18

In a thoughtful series of interviews with famous Latinos and her own views on their varied accomplishments, Ms. Areu does a wonderful job of showing how true it is that success is in large part due to hard work and believing in yourself. From well-known celebrities to politicians to Ms. Areu herself, you are inspired by stories of how all of these people pursued their dreams and found success. A worthwhile read that will challenge you to reach for your own dreams!

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration that guides you to be more.......2006-06-21

I love books that make me want to be a better person -- books that offer inspiration by giving examples of what success looks like. LATINO WISDOM is one of those books. Ms. Areu has interviewed people that most of us think of as special, and showed that they are really like us. Successful people aren't that different, though the author identifies specific qualities that the interviewees share. These are qualities that most of us possess to some degree. So, by reading the tips and wisdom of others, those of us who are still seeking success now have many voices telling us that we can do it. This is a book I know I will read again and again any time I want to be inspired, or on days when I think I want to give up.

          5 out of 5 stars Totally Inspirational!.......2006-06-16

Latino Wisdom gave me great info and insight into the lives of successful people and how they became successful. Each chapter has inspirational nuggets, in the successful people's words, that I can use. And Cathy Areu's chapter introductions perfectly set the tone. I think this book is a great read for everyone looking to feel recharged.

5 out of 5 stars Finding Success in Your Career.......2005-12-22

Latino CEOs and executives reveal career secrets that helped them overcome obstacles. The book is available in Spanish with the title Exito Latino.
My public library catalog decribes it this way: "The candid, inspiring stories in this book reveal the secrets that have helped Latinos make it to the top in a variety of businesses and industries. Readers will discover how to manage people, prepare and set goals, and deal with racism or sexism in the workplace."

          5 out of 5 stars Latino Success.......2001-07-04

A great book that shows one does not have to negate who they are in order to be successful. In fact, it even helps understand how to proudly embrace a Latino background as part of one's identity. I would recommend this book for Latinos looking to enter the business world in the US, anyone interested in the Latino experience in the US, and anyone that has experienced the embarrasing moment of standing in front of a large group of clients having said something that sounded "dirty" because of accent inflections - yes, there is still success after that (check out the story of the executive that prefers to use the word "bedding" instead of sheets). I believe the authors' met their goal by compiling great stories that offer lessons learned and successes along the way to the top. Truly inspiring!
