2 out of 5 stars Disappointing and too expensive.......2007-01-10

I was very disappointed with this purchase because very few, if any, of the activities are unique. It's only advantage is that it collates a good number of activities together in one place. However, I don't feel that the price for this collection is worth it given that I found most of these activities on the internet, for free, and on more than one site.

4 out of 5 stars Is this book really worth its pricey tag?.......2002-08-26

After being greatly impressed by the size of the box that this work arrived in I was a little disappointed by the rather cheap looking folder that was contained within. Indoor/Outdoor Team building games for trainers by Harrison Snow is presented in a large triple ring folder that at first glance looks like a standard undergraduate dissertation. However the way the work is presented and the price tag are both justified in the copyright blurb on the very first page.
Indoor/Outdoor is a not just a reference book but a step by step course for those who want to instruct their own team building sessions. As a result the price tag (which is $$more than I am normally comfortable paying for a book) not only buys you the folder but also the right to make photocopies of relevant pages to distribute to those who attend your workshop, and what a workshop it'll be!
Having spent the summer working as an outdoor pursuits instructor I was glad to see many of the best warm ups and ice breakers that I had already learnt succinctly described in a manner that transfers the necessary fun within which all team-building sessions should be framed. There's enough problem solving exercises to keep even the most competent team busy for a least three days and each description is followed by a few generally excellent paragraphs on how to debrief after the exercise. Very few of the exercises need much preparation or investment in equipment and can be attempted by any able bodied person regardless of fitness.
Along with the individual tasks Snow has included a very readable section introducing a few management theories, the need for strong teams and the whole framework of trust, safety and fun within which good workshops must run. He concludes with some exercises that provide a review of the workshop and a few more management theories that are again very well presented.
Like most work on this subject Indoor/Outdoor can occasionally be a little "touchy feely" but never to a nauseating extent. Snow also occasionally makes the assumption that his audience is entirely from the US but although slightly annoying this in no way detracts from the overall excellent quality of his work. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in running their own sessions but also recommend that you either practice on your friends or shadow an experienced leader before instructing paying customers.

2 out of 5 stars Poor Value.......2002-01-11

A tremendous disappointment. One of the more expensive Team Building resource publications available and it does not deliver. In many respects, Mr. Snow has authored a well organized, adequately written resource BINDER. A three ring binder and 241 (mostly single sided) pages of information. Sadly, the liabilities completely outweigh the assets of this selection.

Almost every activity may be found in other, significantly less expensive books. Very few activities feature illustrations or diagrams. Even when included, the pictures may not be worth a thousand words. Those unfamiliar with an activity may have difficulty vizualizing some instructions. Which begs the question if you ARE familiar with the activities, why purchase the book?

The only justification I found for the seemingly disproportionate price was the permission granted by the publisher to photocopy the pages of the publication "for use by participants attending a training workshop conducted by the original purchaser." This might be a terrific value for those who provide training of trainer workshops or who have a large staff to train. If you primarily will be solo or co-facilitating team building sequences with various groups this may be of dubious benefit to you.

Bottom line: If Mr. Snow and/or McGraw-Hill republished the binder as a book (at a fraction of the cost), added more visual-aids and you were looking for a solid resource book, it might be a useful resource. In it's present form I'd recommend you keep searching. Karl Rohnke and several others have authored resource books that will provide you with much, much more for much, much less.

Keep searching. . .

5 out of 5 stars Great Hands on edition.......2000-03-29

This book is a wonderful collection of activities that will build and challenge your team. The books is spiral bound so it allows you to "take it with you" and use it wherever your team is. The activites are not just the typical version, they are challenging, exciting, and when used can help you establish a solid foundation. The book is easy to follow and does include some diverse games and activities. No two are alike.

Book Description

“Fusing academic prose with vividly rendered memories, Gaunt's journey is refreshing. . . . Gaunt successfully lifts ignored girls from obscurity to center stage. . . . With The Games Black Girls Play, Gaunt has created a necessary space for translating black girls' joy in a society that typically overlooks it. Hopefully, others will take their turn and jump in to keep the games going.”
—Bitch

"In thoughtful and affectionate prose, Gaunt makes plain how the schoolyard syncopations of body and voice are both oral-kinetic play and improvised lessons in socializing girls into the unique social practices of black urban life. . . . The Games Black Girls Play is a smart, delightful and witty polemic of attributions; a cultural benchmark of the complex web of history, race and gender to suggest a `gendered musical blackness' and an `ethnographic truth' linking the `intergenerational cultures of black musical expression' as embodied in the infectious playfulness of black girls."
—Black Issues Book Review

"Very informative and insightful. . . . A valuable source to add to one's collection."
—AllHipHop.com

"By placing black girls at the center of her analysis, Kyra Gaunt challenges us to be ever mindful of the importance of gender, the body, and the everyday in our discussions of black music. The Games Black Girls Play is an exciting and original work that should forever transform the way we think about the sources of black, indeed American, popular music. This is a bold, brilliant, and beautifully written book."
—Farah Jasmine Griffin, Columbia University

" The Games Black Girls Play not only makes the point that black girls matter, but that the games, thoughts, and passions of black girls matter in a world that regularly renders black girls invisible and silent. Gaunt brilliantly argues that the culture of black girls is a critical influence on contemporary black popular culture."
— Mark Anthony Neal, author of New Black Man: Rethinking Black Masculinity

"A particular strength of Gaunt's text is the ethnographic dimension of her discussions. The reader is privy to the personal musical and cultural experiences of African American females of varying ages (including Gaunt herself)."
—New Black Man Book Review

”It is written in an accessible style and the inclusion of personal musical and cultural experiences and histories of a variety of women, including the author, adds to the appeal. The infectious playfulness of the topic and Gaunt's own personal style and passion shine though.”
—Journal of Folklore Research

When we think of African American popular music, our first thought is probably not of double-dutch: girls bouncing between two twirling ropes, keeping time to the tick-tat under their toes. But this book argues that the games black girls play —handclapping songs, cheers, and double-dutch jump rope—both reflect and inspire the principles of black popular musicmaking.

The Games Black Girls Play illustrates how black musical styles are incorporated into the earliest games African American girls learn—how, in effect, these games contain the DNA of black music. Drawing on interviews, recordings of handclapping games and cheers, and her own observation and memories of gameplaying, Kyra D. Gaunt argues that black girls' games are connected to long traditions of African and African American musicmaking, and that they teach vital musical and social lessons that are carried into adulthood. In this celebration of playground poetry and childhood choreography, she uncovers the surprisingly rich contributions of girls' play to black popular culture.

4 out of 5 stars Great Older Readers, but Not an Ideal Alphabet Book.......2006-05-14

The format of this book is consistent for each letter of the alphabet. The letter being featured on the page is large and in color. The text length and layout is also consistent page to page. Also, the repeated structure for each letter helps the reader anticipate the same rhythm for each page.
This is an entertaining book but not one that would be appropriate for a very young child. It would be more appropriate for children that are five years or older. On each page, there is a lot of activity. Not only are there two characters, a place, item being sold, and two animals, the illustrations also convey confusion or chaos. For example, the W page says, "W my name is Winifred and my husband's name is William. We come from Wales and we sell whistles. Winifred is a WOLF. William is a WEASEL." The illustration shows the wolf and weasel blowing whistles as seven other animals fly through the air and cover their ears. There is also a clock shattering and two signs with fine print. With so much commotion on each page, it would be difficult for a child to focus on the intended words that showcase the letter for that page.
Another reason this book would not be a good choice for a very young child is that Bayer frequently uses animals, names, and places that might be unfamiliar to the child. For instance, "C my name is Clara and my husband's name is Claude. We come from Calcutta and we sell cakes. Clara is a COW. Claude is a CONDOR." On this page, the author could have chosen more well-known names (Catherine or Carl), place (Cleveland or California), and animals (cat or cougar). However, the author does include notes at the back of the book about some of the less familiar creatures.
All of the reasons that this would not be a good book for a child just learning the alphabet are the reasons as to why it would be extremely fun and entertaining for any child or adult past that developmental stage. The unusual words can provide an instant vocabulary lesson. The illustrations help support the text by clarifying any words that would be unknown to the reader.

5 out of 5 stars A My Name is Alice.......2005-09-24

I am a Pre-Kindergarten Readiness teacher in my school district for 5 year olds. This book was listed in my Fountas & Pinnell kindergarten phonics text to assist students in learning to read their names in print. I used this story to highlight my students names as we placed them on the word wall in my classroom. I found the text enjoyable and a great learning tool.

5 out of 5 stars Clever ABC Book.......2005-08-17

This is a great ABC book. It is different from the usual format so it really gets kid's imaginations going. As a teacher I love to have a book that expands vocabulary. This book is good as a model for a class book. I also use it as a part of a first grade maps unit. We find all of these interesting places!

5 out of 5 stars can't get enough.......2005-08-16

I had this book for a very long time, and I loved it! It's a cute book that teaches children the alphabet and it's a cute game that I used to play when I was younger. I still have this book, and I have a reason to: When I become a mother and have kids of my own, I'll be able to read it to them! : )

The introduction to Learning the Ropes begins, "S/M has long been a much misunderstood style of erotic play." Race Bannon provides some much-appreciated accurate information in this honest and straightforward basic guide to S/M. He explodes prevalent myths about S/M and replaces them with a playground of erotic fantasy and an emphasis on consensuality. The fantasy visualization exercises and the examples of scenes and negotiation provide rich fodder for crafting new experiences, and regardless of your gender, orientation, or skill level, you'll find that the advice sprinkled throughout the book is useful. Possibly the most important trait of this book, though, is that it's delightfully devoid of the "This is the One True Way" trap evident in too many sexuality manuals.

Learning the Ropes provides delightful examples of questions and issues that commonly come up during negotiation, useful for both the novice just learning to say yes, and the more experienced hand who has met a new partner. The chapter on "S/M Technique" includes good basic safety and sensation information. The real gem, however, is next chapter, "The Playground of the Mind." Here, Bannon shows how the mind--using fantasy, suggestion, voice, and roles--can play an important part in S/M. He also includes sections on S/M gear and how to create an inexpensive toy collection, safety, finding partners, a recommended reading list, and a glossary. --Cheryl Trooskin

Book Description

This brief volume explains how partners can explore their dominant and submissive S/M fantasies in a safe and fun manner. Negative myths are dispelled and replaced with the truth about the kind of S/M erotic play that so many adults enjoy. You'll learn what S/M is, how to do it safely, and much, much more.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It needs to be reprinted!.......2001-11-20

This is one of those introductory books that I highly recommend to people who think they may be interested in BDSM -- the other is "Sensuous Magic" by Pat Califia which I see is being reprinted this year. Race Bannon, you have to wonder if he chose this as a penname or if its his real name, has done a great job on be concise and yet clear in describing a type of sexuality and initmacy that some people enjoy. It also does a good job of being realistic, not making SM too romantic or simple so that everyone wants to run out and try it because frankly BDSM is not for everyone and should not be attempted by everyone. Publishers out there, I think it is time to reprint this book and make it more widely available. In an age of increasing media attention on the kinky, it would be a great way to make people's sex lives and relationships a bit safer and a bit more rewarding.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Brief Introduction.......2000-12-16

"How To Do SM" books seem to come in three sizes, small booklets, mid-sized books and large textbooks.

"Learning The Ropes" is an excellent small booklet on SM. You can read the whole thing in about an hour and it will get you on the right track. The author is a very experienced leatherman who is well known in his community and knows what he is talking about. There are also a number of examples of SM play that are good to read and they involved various genders and roles.

All in all, this book puts an accurate and human face on SM. I highly recommend it.

Other small booklets on SM include "The Sexually Dominant Woman" and "Consensual Sadomasochism". Good mid-sized books are "The Loving Dominant" and "The Master's Manual". For textbook-sized books, read "Screw The Roses Send Me The Thorns" and "SM 101".

4 out of 5 stars Very, very good for novices and the expereinced.......1997-10-09

the writing style is a bit stilted and strained at times, but the content is worth the worse than average writing style. Both the novice and the experienced will benefit from this book - it has a little bit for everyone. Especially enjoyed the "couples" aspect of it.

I really enjoyed it , i could'nt put it down, and i am really excited about getting my hands on my next one in the series, i really liked normally i will not sit down and read a book , this one i could'nt put it down! this i recommend!

3 out of 5 stars An OK book.......2002-12-29

In my opinion, this book was OK, and kind of boring because it wasn't really exciting. I did like some parts, however. This book was basicly about how Lucy goes to Washington with her clasmates, and she is willing to meet the senator to tell her about the Habitat of Humanity organization. My favorite part was when Lucy went to the ball and danced with the senator's politition.

A "must have" for any professional. I have passed it on to colleagues and professionals, only to hear rave reviews. Well written with many very effective anecdotes that are incredibly relevant to today's workplace. It certainly helps build success - I have witnessed it!

5 out of 5 stars A Manifesto for Destroying the Competition at Work.......2005-06-13

If you're serious about your career, but might not get the rules of the game, this book spells them out for you clearly.

This book has got loads of useful information. It covers all the basics like communication skills and politics but it's also got some more in-depth information and strategic advice that's good for people who are really serious about moving up the food chain. In my opinion, this book should be required reading for anyone freshly-graduated from college. I'm actually going to give my copy to a friend of mine who's having issues at work.

The one bad thing I have to say about this book is that after you read it you'll have no excuse for failing. If you do, it's all on you.

It's pragmatic, smart, informative and well-written - and thankfully, it's also entertaining without being insulting to your intelligence. I'd highly recommend this book to career-minded professionals who are looking to get ahead, get a raise, deal with a tough boss, or figure out how to market themselves in their work environment. I've put many of the skills in this book to good use in my day-to-day life (not just work!), particularly the chapter on communication skills, and I've had great results.

One of the most beautiful children's stories I've ever read, coupled with magnificent illustrations, I bought in the big book size...its like seeing a movie on big screen as opposed to at home.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite book.......2007-02-07

Although this is a children's book & I am an adult, I have bought it many times as a gift for my friends. I read it when I need to revive my spirit. It is an absolutely beautiful book-- the words & the paintings.

Imagine a book in which Grandfather is a rabbi, Grandson is an alterboy, and they are described as "of the Quaker faith." You would still not be as far from the truth as this book. Sure it's a "heart-warming" tale. Many cultural inaccuracies are conveyed through heart-warming stories. For more detailed reference on the problems with this book, see:

5 out of 5 stars Tell me the story again, Grandfather..........2002-08-05

An Indian boy asks his Grandfather to tell him about the night he was born, and the Grandfather ties another knot in the counting rope. The night was windy, and when the boy was born, they thought he might die. The Grandfather took him outside and two blue horses came by and gave him their strength. The boy lived, but lives in darkness. He begs for a promise that his Grandfather will always be with him, to which the Grandfather replies, "I love you, boy; that is better than a promise!" A gentle story of love and blindness, with lovely illustrations make for a memorable book.

This book is a terrible representation of the Navajo Indians. None of the information that is in this book is a valid representation of their traditions. The information that we are teaching to our children from this book is false and very stereotypical. It should be taken out of every school.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific book.......2006-12-08

If you can find the hardcove of this, buy it for your toddler/crawler. The pictures are great, colorful, full of detail. The expressions on the faces will delight parentes as they read this over and over to their child.

I recommend the hardcover, because both my 1-5 year olds banged this around for nearly 7 years; the softcovers won't hold up to that kind of use. But, if that's all you can find, get it anyway. Both you and your children will love it.

5 out of 5 stars Fun book for kids to read along to.......2004-03-31

Children learn to read by recognizing (memorizing) increasingly large numbers of words on sight (developing a reading vocabulary). A book like this is one that progresses in a cadence (is singable) and thus, easy to memorize. A great book for new readers, because as they memorize while looking at the book, they begin to recognize and add new words to their reading vocabularies. They don't even realize they are doing it. How do I know this? Well, I am in my mid twenties, and I can remember almost all of this book, though I haven't seen it for about 20 years. I remember reading it over and over. It was one of the first books that I learned to read. Just the other day, I woke up reciting the opening line from the book, and decided to try to find it. I would highly recommend this book for parents trying to interest their kids in reading. It is one that you won't get tired of, even though you might read it about a thousand times!!
