    5 out of 5 stars New Things.......2007-04-23

Carmen Butcher has done it again. In her newest book, "Hildegard of Bingen: a spiritual reader," not only has she once more rendered ancient medieval texts readable, enjoyable, and inspiring, but she has also provided a concise and interesting biography of Hildegard of Bingen. She has taken her gift for translation, as evident in "Incandescence: 365 readings with women mystics," and combined it with her penchant for breathing new life into long-gone characters, as in her biography, "Man of Blessing: A Life of St. Benedict." The introductions to each chapter are written in such a way that they are suited for, as Butcher writes, a "first-time Hildegard reader or long-time Hildegard friend" (xii). Each section gives the reader insight into another facet of the twelfth century abbess. As I read, I was continually surprised at the beauty and poetry Butcher maintained throughout her translations, whether it be a song, vision, or letter. This book is made to be read more than once. The first reading will be a delightful rushing from page to page, as you soak up Hildegard and her work. But the second reading will be a slow, meditative one, rendering spiritual nourishment and inspiration that seeps from Hildegard's wisdom and passion. Hildegard writes in one of her letters, "Always try to learn new things, then, because that's as necessary to wisdom as internal organs are to being healthy." Read "Hildegard of Bingen," and you will have learned new things.

Brilliant!! Hildegard comes alive in the pages of this wonderful book. Carmen Butcher truly captures the essence of this remarkable woman! This is a must read!!

5 out of 5 stars St. Hildegard of Bingen a future Doctor of the Church?.......2007-03-14

I had the privilege of seeing and reviewing the original manuscript of this book. Dr. Carmen Butcher has translated St. Hildegard's works into modern English that is very readable. Those familiar with St. Hildegard and her works will appreciate this reader and those new to her will have a great introduction to this wonderful saint and follower of the Rule of St. Benedict. Dr. Butcher in the introduction presents a short biography of St. Hildegard. In my original review I suggest that if Pope Benedict is looking for another woman to declare a Doctor of the Church, St. Hildegard would make a wonderful candidate. St. Hildegard was very influential in her time. She had the special permission of the Church to preach to clerics and lay alike. Pope Eugene III read some of her works at a synod he was attending and praised her. St. Bernard of Clairvaux also praised her as did many clerics and lay people of note. Many sought her advice and aid. Again this reader by Dr. Butcher is a great introduction to this holy saint of God, St. Hildegard.

    Book Description

This reader presents students with an alternative conceptual approach to gender in the workplace. This approach traces the alignment of commonly held assumptions about work and competence with idealized images of masculinity. The readings then illustrate how this alignment limits opportunities for all but a small narrowly defined segment of the workforce. These limitations not only affect the work experiences of women and men, but also restrict how work gets done, and therefore reduce organizational effectiveness. The contributors take stock of the most important recent work on gender and diversity in organizations and apply it to mainstream contemporary management. The result is a book that not only gives readers a deeper understanding of gender and diversity in organizations, but also provokes new ways of thinking about traditional topics, such as leadership, human resource management, negotiation, globalization and organizational change.

Excellent book for anyone interested in gender and work. The editors are aware of issues related to race, in addition to gender, which is an added bonus. Choose this book if you are serious about the topic. If you want something light and fluffy, go with a different book.

    5 out of 5 stars Erdrich's Work Needs and Deserves a Guide.......2005-08-06

I've been teaching Erdrich's fiction for a few years, and often have wished I could check my own sense of genealogy and character relationships. This guide does a good job of that, though it was published before THE LAST REPORT was published; we need an update to include that and subsequent works.

2 out of 5 stars Genealogy and character "tracking" vs. literary analysis.......2000-10-25

In an attempt to "solve" readers' problems, Beidler and Barton have simplified the structure of Louise Erdrich's interlocking series of narratives (Tracks, Bingo Palace, Tales of Burning Love, Love Medicine)-- almost to a fault. In a painstaking but somehow wrong-headed exercise, they have straightened out the intricate and mysterious convolutions of Native American ancestry in these novels and recharted them as Western pedigrees. With similar de-mystifying intent, they have dogged each major and minor character through the entire series of novels and then collected every scrap of information in all the books under single headings bearing that chracter's name. While the authors should be complimented on their tenacity, the linear vision that permeates their "guide" is likely to send readers of Erdrich and other Native American storytellers in the wrong direction. This reductive study obscures rather than illuminates the magical power of Erdrich's asynchornous narrative fragments that loop and twist out of the reach of clock time into the realm of spirit.

"God is a lie, / and Faith is a lie, / And a tenfold lie is Love; / Life is a problem without a why, / And never a thing to prove."-Voltairine de Cleyre

Never as infamous as Emma Goldman, Voltairine de Cleyre distinguished herself as a leading intellectual, activist, speaker and writer with a tremendous impact on American anarchist, feminist and labor movements. Combined into a fully annotated volume are her classic works and writings that have not been widely available since her death in 1912. She reveals the scope and depth of her activism and study through her prose. Her poetry speaks powerfully of the issues closest to her heart.

"The most gifted and brilliant anarchist woman America ever produced."-Emma Goldman

5 out of 5 stars the voltairine de cleyre reader.......2006-05-13

Superb collection of one of the most brilliant anarchist writers. This book also contains some of her very tender, but powerful poetry. For those who think they may know something of anarchy, this may be the ideal place to begin a study in depth of a complicated subject.

She covers such diverse subjects as Zapata in the chapter on the Mexican Revolt to Anarchism and American Traditions.
This is one the important contributions Anarchist Press has made to the world by publishing works that have been frequently out of print.

      Outstanding

5 out of 5 stars An Individualist Anarchist/Libertarian.......2006-01-16

Few women possessed the courage to tackle social injustice and then later criticize the Constitution for its failure to realize it, as did Voltarine de Cleyre - not just in her century but from among women in ours as well. Driven by the injustice of being interred in a nunnery at a young age, she railed against arbitrary dominion of the powerful against the less powerful.

In this reader are collected some of her speeches that were later transcribed into essays and published. A December 16, 1893 speech was published in 1894 as "In Defense of Emma Goldman and the Right of Expropriation": "Miss Goldmann [sic] is a communist; I am an individualist. She wishes to destroy the right of property, I wish to assert it. I make war upon privilege and authority whereby the right of property, the true right of the individual, is annihilated". In this essay, she showed herself to a libertarian and wisely saw that free enterprise makes it difficult for one to amass wealth at the expense of the many; only the interventionist power of the State can create monopoly [or even a corporation for that matter].

In her 1909 essay "Anarchism and American Traditions", she wrote: "Anarchism declares that private enterprise, whether individual or cooperative, is equal to all the undertakings of society. And it quotes the particular two instances, Education and Commerce, which the governments of the States and of the United States have undertaken to manage and regulate, as the very two which in operation have done more to destroy American freedom and equality, to warp and distort American tradition, to make of government a mighty engine of tyranny".

After the Haymarket labor leaders were hanged in 1887 after a corrupted trial, she became an anti-Constitutionalist because of its inability to protect individuals' rights. Apparently she had never read or heard of the Cherokee Nation's Supreme Court win and subsequent Trail of Tears at the hands of President Andy Jackson in violation of the U.S. Constitution and Supreme Court ruling. Because if she had, she would not have been shocked to learn that the Constitution really is a sham. It protects individuals' rights only when the government allows it to; otherwise it's just words on paper.

A student of Benjamin Tucker, Voltairine de Cleyre should be read not only for her ideas on liberty but for her historical impact in the growth of early libertarian thought.

5 out of 5 stars proof independent scholars exist.......2004-08-08

Excellent. This is the book you should purchase if you're wanting to know more about de Cleyre. Brigati resurrects her for the popular reader.

        Book Description

This unique collection of writings by the great social reformer-edited by the author of Jane Addams and the Dream of American Democracy-reveals the essential Jane Addams.

Jane Addams was a prolific and elegant writer. Her twelve books consist largely of published essays, but to appreciate her life work one must also read her previously uncollected speeches and editorials. This artfully compiled collection begins with Addams's youthful Junior Class Oration on women as "Breadgivers," features thoughtful examinations of topics as diverse as "Tolstoy and Gandhi" and "The Public School and the Immigrant Child," and even includes popular essays on "The Subtle Problems of Charity," from The Atlantic Monthly, and "Need a Woman Over Fifty Feel Old?" from Ladies' Home Journal. Along with the writings themselves, Elshtain's insightful commentary offers powerful evidence of Addams's remarkable ability to frame social problems in an ethical context, her unwillingness to succumb to ideological dogma, her political courage, and her lifelong devotion to civic and moral life.

Ron David isn't so audacious as to actually try to explain Toni Morrison. Like a great novel, a complex individual is beyond factual explanation. His "explanation" of Morrison is more an attempt to provide readers with enough information and insight so they can explain Toni Morrison to themselves. For starters, David writes the kind of introduction to an author that he says he would like to read: "creative, provocative, irreverent, passionate, funny, spontaneous, and real." Add "unpretentious" to the list and you get a fair idea of the sort of tone David strives for--and achieves. His stated goals: to get people to read Morrison's books, and once read, to provoke folks to rethink the standard interpretations. David also embraces honesty and humor. He writes, "Toni Morrison is in grave danger of being treated like a sacred cow. I have done my best to protect her from that cruel fate."

But above all, David's book is shaped by his belief in spoken language, that the best way to engage readers in lit crit is to write the way you speak, "you and I, hanging out over coffee, talking like real people." Engaging and readable as his writing is, however, David's prose is more astute and poetic than most coffee clutch conversations. One rarely overhears small talk of "wordmusic" and "Literary Hedonism" while passing Starbucks. There's no harm done, however, by his flair for expression. His folksy, just-us-chatting tone renders his sharp insights and commentary all the more penetrating. The focus of his commentary is on Morrison's books--the beauty of her language, the subtext of her novels. Her biographical story plays second fiddle--a scant one third of the book-wherein he tells the tale of her life in the context of her fascination with her ancestors (both African and American). David doesn't linger over Morrison's life, but he does cover all her published works and provides a good sketch of her most formative moments and experiences.

Though he congratulates himself a tad too often on just how nonpedantic he is, Ron David accomplishes what he sets out to do: educate the world about Toni Morrison and the beautiful literature she has created, encourage novices to read and enjoy her writing, and challenge academia to reread her works and interpret them in new ways. And he does so in a familiar, comfortable, entertaining tone that keeps you reading lit crit, even when it hasn't been assigned and there's no paper due. --Stephanie Gold

If you're planning to teach Morrison, don't bother purchasing this book; for lit instructors, it isn't going to provide profound insights. "Approaches to Teaching the Novels of Toni Morrison" was far more helpful in my experience.

5 out of 5 stars toni morrison explained at last--in plain language!.......2002-04-20

It's wonderful to read analyses of Morrison's extremely complicated novels written by a real person, in real language that isn't phony, confusing, or pretentious. Ron David writes as a real person would talk, something that I found extremely enjoyable (although I can see where some would find it annoying). I love that, while he praises Morrison as the finest author of our time, he is not afraid to point out and openly criticize much of her writing, particularly THE BLUEST EYE. I thoroughly enjoyed what he had to say about JAZZ; if anything, he makes you feel better about not understanding all of her writings. David's admittance that he doesn't understand what the hell JAZZ was all about is enough to make us all feel better about not understanding it, either. His style is wonderfully intimate, friendly, and easily readable. This book is highly reccommended to anyone who has struggled with Morrison. It also made me feel proud to discover that many readers are never even able to finish her books--and I've read four.

1 out of 5 stars Save your money!.......2001-11-12

In this book one will find information about Morrison's novels which is universally known. It is a kind of anthology of bit and pieces of reviews and critiques; it is bereft of anything original. What is missing is any attempt by the author to analyze subtextually any of the novels. I found the chapter on "Jazz" woefully inadequate and chatty. If, according to the author's admission, he did not understand "Jazz," why on earth did he assay an attempt to "analyze" it. I think Oprah could have done a better job!!!

5 out of 5 stars Well Thought and Explained . ........2001-02-06

This is definitely my recommendation for a "one-stop" analysis of Morrison's fiction. I do not agree with all of David's opinions - we all have them. However, like an archeologist excavating a buried treasure, he meticulously unravels the meaning behind the language, the naming of the characters, the technique behind the delivery. He further demonstrates how Morrison makes use of biblical doctrine, musical structure and myth in her work. The analysis of Paradise is by far the most intelligent, well-written critique I've read to date. Toni Morrison Explained provides a range of possible interpretations for the reader to ponder and ultimately integrate with our own experience of the Nobel novelist writings. Kudos to David for doing the work required to experience Morrison's fiction on a whole `nother level.

4 out of 5 stars Explained is as Explained does.......2000-08-02

Even if you have never read any of Toni Morrison's work, reading this commentary and explication is such an enjoyable experience, you might put aside that other book that you haven't yet finished. David has a technique and style of drawing you into his unique approach to literary criticism--which this is not--and to chatty and healthy conversation about what Toni Morrison did or did not do, and what her books really mean. Eye-opening and quite entertaining, this work will likely be consulted by many a student in many a literature course, and by many a fan of Morrison. It jusy might open the door to a whole new school of interpretation!

1 out of 5 stars When will the next edition appear?.......2006-01-15

This reference work is invaluable in finding mystery series by woman up to 1999 or so, when I bought my copy. However, it is now very much out-of-date and of little use on newer series/authors/titles. I keep checking to see if there's a Detecting Women 4, and can still hope, but possibly this one is the end of the line. What a shame!

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Resource for Mystery Readers!.......2004-04-04

This book is an outstanding resource for readers who devour mysteries. Heising's multiple ways of listing books (geographical, by profession, etc.) provides a wealth of information for the reader who is always on the lookout for a new author. I just wish there was a new edition! I wouldn't part with this one, though. It's always a good way to start on a new author.

5 out of 5 stars Watching The Detectives.......2002-03-04

        Watching the Detectives
How far has Sue Grafton gotten in her alphabet mystery series? What's the first book in Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta series? Who are writing books featuring bed & breakfasts?

As those who love reading mystery series know, it's difficult to keep track of the hundreds of writers past and present who have contributed to the mystery genre, which is why reading sleuths will love "Detecting Women," a guidebook to the distaff side of mysteries.

This handsome, large paper bound book lists more than 600 series and 3,400 books written by women. Each entry contains a biographical introduction with the title and year of each book, and notes if the book has been nominated for any awards. Editor Wiletta Heising has done an exceptional job of breaking down the information, providing extensive lists that break down series by year, occupation, geographic location and even pseudonym.

The brief biographies are gold mines of fascinating information that invites lengthy browsing. Here is where you can learn that Grafton's fictional P.I. Kinsey Millhone will celebrate her 40th birthday once "`Z' is for Zero" appears in 2009 (when Grafton will be 69); that Agatha Christie wrote 35 novels featuring Hercule Poirot, and 12 about Jane Marple; and that the largely forgotten Anne Katherine Green is considered the "mother of the detective story," and was a best-selling author nine years before Arthur Conan Doyle put pen to paper.

Purple Moon also publishes a pocket guide to help mystery fans track of their favorite series, and comes with a notepad useful for noting suspects, clues, and books desired. "Detecting Women" provides a welcome overview of the rapidly expanding mystery field, and can reintroduce readers to now-forgotten and obscure writers. It is nothing less than required, fascinating reading for mystery fans.

5 out of 5 stars Taking the Mystery Out of Series Characters.......2000-09-01

How many times have you discovered a new author and tried to unravel the sequence of the series? Publishers sometimes list previous books - provided they published those previous books. Or the author's work is neatly cited in alphabetical order. Great if you've picked up Sue Grafton, not so good if the author is Martha Grimes. Or only the books still in print appear.

I edit two mystery newsletters, one for a general bookstore. My readers want to know series order. Short of tracking all the mystery writers yourself (good luck!), DETECTING WOMEN-3rd Ed. is the very best thing. Willetta Heising also includes bibliographies to catch the fancy of the most fanatic fan - settings, characters, types, historical venue, pseudonyms, and award nominees/winners. The master list even has blank spaces to accommodate future titles.

There has never been a more comprehensive listing. I wouldn't/couldn't prepare a newsletter without it. This is definitely a keeper -- until DETECTING WOMEN 4 comes along!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for the Mystery Connoisseur!.......2000-07-04

This is a wonderful tool to keep track of all those mystery books on your shelves. This book offers a comprehensive listing of women's fiction mysteries. Books are listed by author and title. It is great way to see the order of books written in a series. There is also a check list where you can check off the book once you purchase it, and then check it after you read it. I like to make notations next to the books once I finish the book. Books that have been nominated or received awards are designated with a star by the title.

          Book Description

From some of the great philosophers of the Western tradition:

"The Devils gateway"--Tertullian "A misbegotten male"--Aquinas "Big children their whole life long"--Schopenhauer

The roots of philosophical misogyny in the writings of thinkers from the ancient Greeks through the modern age are exposed and explored in this collection. Beverley Clack questions whether the wisdom of these philosophers can be separated from the misogyny, and whether feminists should seek an alternative to the Western philosophical canon.

This collection offers chronological evidence of how the great male thinkers debated the question of woman, provides and introduction of each thinker. The philosophers included are: Plato, Aristotle, Tertullian, Augustine, Aquinas, Kramer, Sprenger, Descartes, Hobbes, Locke, Hume, Kant, Rousseau, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Freud, Weininger, Spengler and Lucas.
