5 out of 5 stars A Combination of Motivational and Practical Advice.......2007-08-13

Much of the stress we experience comes not from the workplace but from our reactions to our workplace. Most of Carlson's little book focuses on how we need to change our attitudes in order to minimize stress. For instance, work should be seen as something that we get to do rather than something that we have to do. Enjoy life now--don't wait for retirement!

Problems should be seen as speed bumps to negotiate gracefully, not barriers to be resented. One should recognize that life is full of hassles, and that these should be handled in stride. One should lay off the ego, because constant comparison with others will only raise one's stress. Workplace meetings, instead of being stewed at as unnecessary or boring, should be seen as challenges to learn something new.

Carlson also gives some practical pointers for minimizing work-related stress. For instance, if we feel hurried in the morning, we should get up earlier to give us more time to get ready for work. Long commutes to work, instead of being hated as a waste of time, should be profitably spent listening to books on tape. To avoid the stress caused by constant phone calls, we should have a "no phone" time when we don't answer the phone. Voice mail should be used more often. To dissipate general stress, we should spend ten minutes each day doing absolutely nothing. And, since vacation trips themselves can be stressful, we should spend more of our vacations puttering around at home or visiting local events and places.

4 out of 5 stars Simple Advice.......2007-05-03

Some of the "advice" is a good, although it is presented in a very simplistic way. I guess the author wanted all audiences to understand the meaning.

Some of the advice is redundant, other is good.

I purchased this for myself to if I can learn how to reduce some of the stress at work, but now we are using it in the office.

I have to say that the chapters that really pertain to you get you a bit upset. (truth hurts I guess). I found that applies to more people than just me when we started reading in the office. :-)

If you are looking for a brake-through book this is not it. If you are looking for some simple self-improvement advice as it pertains to the work environment, you may find some guidance in here. Don't read too much or expect too much from this book. Although it is somewhat helpful if you accept it for what it is.

2 out of 5 stars Too Focused on an Office Enviroment.......2007-04-08

I've enjoyed the other Don't Sweat the Small Stuff Books and thought this book would be helpful in helping me to reduce some of my stress at work. I find that almost all of the suggestions assume an office type of atmosphere and aren't really well suited to my work enviroment - a high paced retail enviroment. Making use of break times is nice if you get breaks, i.e. I just found the book sort of narrowly targeted to a certain type of worker.

5 out of 5 stars Great Gift for Employees & Co-Workers.......2007-01-15

I gave this book for Christmas to give to my fellow supervisors at work. Since we are having issues at work (What company is NOT), the gift was well timed and was the perfect size for timely reading. I struggle to find gifts for my employees as well so this is what they are getting for Christmas this year!

3 out of 5 stars Not very deep, nor very helpful.......2006-11-24

This book would have worked much better as a wall poster or forwarded email: "150 Ways to Lighten Up at Work" or something like that. It's like a really, really dumbed-down, touchy-feely version of Baltasar Gracian's "The Art of Worldy Wisdom," and just made me realize I should re-read that book instead. (No offense meant to Gracian!)

Each chapter is skimmable in 30 seconds or less, and far too many chapters offer mediocre advice that makes you question whether the author has worked in a typical modern office in the past twenty years, instead of making you feel like you just received a fresh perspective on an old problem.

If the positive reviews for this book have left you thinking maybe it's worth a read, I strongly recommend you browse through it at a bookstore first. It's so lightly written that most people can scan it in 7-10 minutes at a store and save $12.

Books like these are what make me distrust self-help gurus and think that they're all con artists.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Concise.......2003-03-18

I've been on both sides of reorganizations, and this book does HELP. It was especially very good advice when I was younger and just beginning to experience the change that all organizations must go through. I held on to my copy and still look at it now and then to remind myself that I shouldn't fight change, but take it as it comes and make the most of it.

5 out of 5 stars Pragmatic Reality.......2003-01-31

I am an employee who appreciates reality. This book espouses the importance of personal accountability...for how we work, how we live, how we feel.

The challenge is in doing something right that does not come naturally; proactive rather than reactive. This book made me feel good about how much control I actually do have.

Following the axioms presented will help you step over some tripwires in the minefield of a work-a-day world in the throes of change.

1 out of 5 stars Senior managers will love it, but employees will hate it.......2001-03-25

The tone and messages of the book are such that they will serve to demotivate, rather than inspire, employees. For example:

Message #1: You (the reader) are not senior management. Throughout the book, senior management is described as "the people at the top" and "they." The book immediately sets up a distinction between these two groups - top management, which is moving the company along in response to outside changes, and employees, who are resisting change at every turn.

Message #2: Change is scary, unrelenting, and you (the average person) are naturally not going to like it. And if you weren't scared about change going into the book, you will be after you read it. One of the opening paragraphs reads: "And if today's stress and tension aren't enough to create problems, all a person has to do is consider what the future holds. One close look at what's in store should be enough to worry anyone."

Message #3: You (the reader) are an idiot, and you will persistently resist change unless you wise up to the tips in this book. The book outlines 15 mistakes people usually make in dealing with change. It doesn't offer 15 good ideas for preventing stress due to change, but instead focuses on 15 things you'll probably do wrong unless, of course, you read this book.

On the whole, this book is too simplistic and supplies only minimal rationale for why an employee should change. If you want to get employees to be more open to change, to put their heart into their job, to be more supportive of the company's overall direction, then give them a book that will inspire them. Give them tips for how to be a happier person, both on the job and at home. Talk to them in a positive tone and not a negative one, as this book does. There are many books out there that can accomplish these goals, just not this one.

3 out of 5 stars Practical ways to become better at human relations.......2007-09-16

This book merely takes excerpts from Dale Carnegie's two earlier books: (1) How to stop worrying and start living and (2) How to win friends and influence people.

Rules excerpted from How to Stop Worrying and Start Living include

1. Be yourself, do not imitate others.

2. Work habits:
(a) keep your desk clean except for material related to the current problem at hand
(b) work on more important problems first
(c) when you encounter a problem, solve it right away if you have the necessary information rather than leave it lingering
(d) delegate effectively, you're still responsible for the results

3. Relax

4. Be enthusiastic

5. Count you blessings, not your troubles.

6. Remember that unjust criticism is often a disguised compliment.

7. Put in your best effort; don't let others' criticisms get to you

Rules from How to Win Friends and Influence People include

1. Don't criticize, complain

2. Give honest, sincere appreciation

3. Arouse enthusiasm through appreciation and encouragement.

4. Consider and articulate benefits to the other party in pursuing the proposed action

5. Become genuinely interested in other people

6. Make the other person feel important and do it sincerely.

7. Show respect for the other person's opinion.

8. Begin in a friendly way.

9. Get the other person to say successive "yes", "yes" immediately.

10. Let the other person take credit for the idea.

11. Appeal to the nobler motives.

12. Call attention to people's mistakes indirectly.

13. Talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person.

14. Ask questions instead of giving direct orders.

15. Let the other man save his face.

The habits are easy to understand and eminently practical. Reading the book will help you become better at human relations.

2 out of 5 stars Why they do this?.......2007-06-29

Why did they rehash old stuff into a new book? This book is really two books - How to win friends... and stop worrying, start living. I didn't know and I actually read both books already and I got suckered into buying this. You may say I should've read the fine print, but whatever, it's stupid.

2 out of 5 stars Product Description Was Inadequate.......2007-05-13

Dale Carnegie is an amazing author and the wisdom in this book is life-changing.

The real problem with this book is that the product description failed to mention that it is a **COMPILATION** of excerpts from 2 other books:

"How to Stop Worrying and Start Living", and
"How to Win Friends and Influence People".

I already had those two books and, so, wasted my money by buying this book.

5 out of 5 stars This book helped me tremendously.......2005-12-31

I realize that this book is simply an abridged compilation of HOW TO WIN FRIENDS AND INFLUENCE PEOPLE and one of Dale Carnegie's other famous books, the title of which eludes me for the moment. However, HOW TO ENJOY YOUR LIFE AND YOUR JOB is still a very important book on its own simply because it allows the reader the opportunity to learn these valuable lessons while concentrating on one central theme, not to mention a theme which is almost always on everone's mind with waking and sleeping: the workplace.

This book was easy to read and offered deep insight on how to work better and smarter. It's not a 12-step program or some kind of money-made-easy scheme. All the techniques in the book require practice, hard work, and a lot of patience. But by doing the best I can to employ these techniques in my workplace, I've become not only more proficient but also more relaxed, and more able to enjoy the job, even to the point at which it's no longer a drudge to have to go to work in the morning.

I highly recommend HOW TO ENJOY YOUR LIFE AND YOUR JOB.

3 out of 5 stars You'd do better to get the 2 books this book was extracted from.......2005-08-14

"How to Enjoy Your Life and Your Job" was created by taking excerpts from "How to Win Friends and Influence People" and "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living" - both excellent books. Buy those books separately or buy "Dale Carnegies Lifetime Plan for Success : The Great Bestselling Works Complete In One Volume" (ISBN: 1578660394) which contains both complete books. This way you get Carnegie's work in its complete form. I consider Carnegie to be one of the best self-help authors of all time, and that is reflected in these writings. Carnegie's work will help you improve your attitude, relationships, choices, and the results you achieve in life if you are willing to put his advice into practice. I only gave this book 3 stars because it is just a rehash of Carnegie's other books, with material cut out.

This was such a great book I bought one for me and one for my family. I only wish I had bought it sooner.

5 out of 5 stars Intended especially for the loved ones of police offers.......2007-04-12

Written by clinical psychologist Ellen Kirschman, Ph.D., whose specific area of expertise lies in helping police officers and their families, I Love a Cop: What Police Families Need To Know is a straightforward, "tell-the-facts" guide, now in a newly revised edition, written especially for the significant others, spouses, and family members of police officers. Being a cop is a demanding job, and sometimes the very skills required for competence - such as being able to suppress strong emotions like fear, anger, or even compassion - are harmful to officers' private and personal lives if carried over to the home. I Love a Cop gives practical, no-nonsense advice to what to expect from the demands of the job, coping with stress or trauma, and much more. Of especial value are the chapters about dealing with domestic abuse, threats of suicide, or other severe cases and problems - including how to recognize the warning signs and when there is no other option than to just get out. Though I Love a Cop is intended especially for the loved ones of police offers, its solid advice is also highly recommended for the loved ones of anyone in a high-stress, risky or demanding occupation. I Love a Cop is also highly recommended as supplemental reading for anyone considering a policing career, as there is also plenty of sage wisdom about what to expect on the job and how to balance demands of the job with those of family life.

Book Description

Human interaction is never flawless. Even the best relationships produce tension and at times, unpleasant emotions. Since organizations are comprised of people, all organizations generate emotional pain as part of the process of doing business: producing new products on tight deadlines, setting benchmarks for performance, creating budgets, crafting company policies, and so on. Getting the job done is rarely painless. But when emotional pain goes unmanaged or is poorly handled, it can negatively affect both employees and the bottom line—in essence, it becomes toxic. In Toxic Emotions at Work and What to Do About Them, Peter J. Frost argues that the way an organization responds to pain determines whether it remains toxic or becomes generative, whether it endures as a debilitating poison or is transformed into a force for healthy organizations.

According to Frost, when ignored, toxic emotions betray employees’ hopes, bruise their egos, reduce their enthusiasm for work, and diminish their sense of connectedness to their company’s community and goals. Compassionate responses to pain, on the other hand, encourage those who are suffering to effect constructive changes in their work lives. Despite their powerful role in employee performance, toxic emotions are rarely addressed by organizations. Instead, most companies respond to pain informally and unconsciously through self-selected individuals whom Frost calls “toxin handlers.” Typically a senior manager or someone with a high emotional intelligence capacity, toxin handlers soften the blow of emotional pain for others, but over the course of time, absorb much of the pain they handle to their own detriment. They are often unrecognized, unrewarded, and poorly supported by their organizations. And, while they often provide a temporary relief from the symptoms of toxic organizational pain, toxin handlers alone are unable to eradicate toxic emotions for the long-term.

Toxic Emotions at Work and What to Do About Them suggebeststhat handling toxic emotions effectively is an important, though unrecognized set of competencies that must be understood and embraced—not only by toxin handlers, but by leaders, managers, and the organization as a whole. Through rich examples of how individuals and organizations have managed emotional pain successfully, Frost describes the key skills necessary to cope with emotional pain and to manage it effectively, and offers concrete courses of action for organizations to institutionalize compassion in the face of emotional pain.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent look at "toxic handlers"..........2007-07-01

Have you ever read a book that caused you to view your work environment in a whole new light? This book did it for me... Toxic Emotions at Work and What You Can Do About Them by Peter J. Frost. I now understand a bit more about the role I play, as well as how to support others who play that role to a far greater degree than I do...

Contents: Emotional Pain in Organizations; Sources of Toxicity in Organizations; The Work of the Toxic Handler; The Toll on Toxin Handlers; Healing the Healers; At the Interface - What Handlers and Their Organizations Can Do; Leaders Handling Pain; The Compassionate Company - Architecting Responses to Pain; Looking through the Lens of Pain; Notes; Index; About the Author

The premise of this book is that every organization has toxicity in it when it comes to emotions and interactions between employees and management. While that's to be expected, the real problem comes in with the people who unofficially deal with that toxicity. Frost calls them "toxic handlers", and they are critical to the functioning of a company. These people are the ones that soak up the irrational and emotional behavior of those above them, and then filter out the toxins in order to pass along the message to those who need to do the work. Likewise, they are also the "go-to" people when others are having emotional difficulties and need someone to talk to. The problem lies in how the handlers deal with the constant barrage of garbage that comes at them. If they internalize and take on the pain of others, there's a very good chance that they will end up frustrated and burnt-out. Then when they leave, everything crumbles down as there's no one to absorb that pain any longer, as their function was not recognized. But by following many of the steps and suggestions offered here, it's possible to successfully play that role and still not end up as a victim yourself. Frost also covers how organizations need to recognize the people who play these roles, understand the stress and pressure they're under, and give them the assistance they need to not become a casualty.

Having worked at Enron nearly up to the end, I can readily identify with everything in this book. And in a number of areas, I tend to be a minor toxic handler, in that I'm concerned about the well-being of others in any particular structure I'm part of. I also can now see a number of people who I've worked for who are major toxic handlers, and I think I have a better idea on how best to help them do their job better...

An excellent read, and one that could change the way you view your official (and unofficial) org chart...

Listing a number of across-the-board statistics, Dr. Rediger presents the problem of the "Clergy Killer," the person who is on a search & destroy mission for the pastor and all who might align themselves to him. In all my years of church work, I've only come across a single individual within the church who even began to manifest a small portion of the traits that are described in this book. May the Lord in His graciousness allow my naivety to continue. On the other hand, I have seen a number of such individuals outside of the church and in the working world. I can speak from experience that their targets are not confined to pastors, but are set on anyone who is perceived to be in authority.

A number of case studies are cited to support the generally stated mythos of the "clergy killer." This is not someone who is merely at odds or even openly antagonistic to pastoral authority, but one who is willing to go to any lengths, both immoral and unethical, to bring a pastor down. Though a minority, the book also dealt with clergy killers from among the pastorate.

The strengths of this book are seen in its documenting what seems to be a persistent problem within the church and in seeking for various strategies to overcome the "clergy killer." The theological stance of the author seems to be so broadly based as to apply these principles to any religion or any opposition in any walk of life. Interestingly, the book makes little or no mention of the various adversaries faced in the New Testament and the Biblical strategies provided to deal with them.

One of the best ways to defend a clergy killer is to avoid inadvertently manufacturing one in the first place. The author points out that members who are bored, floundering, under used and under recognized are potential candidates for being turned into clergy killers (Page 55).

"We get sick when we forget how to be well" (Page 183). The author utilizes this quote several times, indicating its importance to his overall theme. This is essentially a book about sick church members who seek to handle their sickness by attacking their perceived enemy - the clergy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent holistic treatment of a vital church issue.......2006-03-15

Lloyd Rediger is a speaker and consultant on church dynamics and leadership issues; in "Clergy Killers," he addresses a shocking, yet growing phenomenon. Pastors and priests are being increasingly attacked by their own congregation members; this is more than mere differences of principled opinions, personality conflicts, or poor communication-rather the conflict involves persistent and deliberate attacks that stem from mental illness or a conscious choice on the part of a person to embrace evil. The results of these attacks are devastating: the pastor's overall health is strongly, adversely affected as is the health of the pastor's family, the health of the church leaders, their families, and the congregation itself. To further compound the issue, pastors are often neither trained nor prepared to confront abnormal conflict, most seminaries don't train in conflict management, and denominational leaders are neither equipped nor motivated to assist pastors under attack.

For this important problem, Rediger presents a number of helpful suggestion to avoid serious attacks. These include recognizing the existence of mental illness and evil (both in the world and in the church), the deliberate cultivation of relationships ("Relationships! Relationships! Relationships!"), a purposeful focus on health-physical, mental, and spiritual-for both the pastor and the congregation at large, and the identification of support systems.

Rediger is strong on the identification and analysis of the danger posed by "clergy killers." Weaker is his sections on solutions-not because they seem unworkable, but because they are not presented as clearly as they might have been and because the connections between proposed solution and the original problem tends to be ambiguous. Nevertheless, this reflects his holistic and systematic approach to issues (which is appreciated and tends to compliment Kenneth Haugk's "Antagonists in the Church" well). Other weaknesses in this otherwise excellent book include his well-intentioned treatment on worship/prayer (which tended to tear down traditional Western forms of worship in order to build up his favored Eastern forms) and the closing bibliography. Rediger cites a number of helpful books in the narrative yet the closing bibliography does not reflect these citations.

In all, these criticisms do not detract from the overall high quality of the book. As one formerly under attack by a clergy killer, the book is dead-right in many places and has helped to prepare me should similar issues arise in the future. It (along with Haugk's book) should be required reading for pastors and lay leaders.

5 out of 5 stars A Reality Check for Churches.......2002-09-13

This is one of the most insightful, and truth-telling books on the subject of church life and ministry that I have ever read! Dr. Rediger seeks to deal with a tragic,, but growing trend in our day, which is the tendecy of some powerbrokers in some churches to target, abuse, and fire pastor after pastor. I realize that some pastors have some real problems, but how is it that some churches mistreat pastor after pastor? Is it believeable that several pastors in a row could make the same mistakes in the same church? Perhaps we should ask ourselves what are the common denominators such as the unresolved personality disorders that exist in churches. It is time for congregations to wake up and realize what these "Clergy Killers" are doing not only to ministers and their families, but also to people in the church who befriend and support the minister, maybe even YOU. In addition, we need to ask what is this doing to the cause of the Risen Lord Jesus Christ? Is this what Jesus died to accomplish? I do not think so!
Dr. Rediger has given us a wonderful analysis of the problem and how congregations must accept the responsibility which is theirs and STOP FOLLOWING CLERGY KILLERS! STOP ELECTING THEM TO LEADERSHIP POSITIONS AND STOP HINDERING THE WORK OF CHRIST. DO THINGS WHICH WILL LEAD THEM TO THERAPY WHERE THEY CAN EXAMINE WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND COME TO SEE BETTER, HEALTHIER WAYS OF LIVING AND RELATING! THE FUTURE OF THE CHURCH AND ITS MINISTERS DEPENDS IN LARGE PART ON HOW WE RESPOND TO THIS PROBLEM NOW AND NOT DECADES DOWN THE ROAD. LET'S NOT CREATE A SITUTATION THAT DRIVES MANY TALENTED AND GOD-CALLED PEOPLE OUT OF THE MINISTRY!THIS IS MUST READING FOR EVERY CHRISTIAN AND ESPECIALLY EVERY MINISTER OR ANYONE WHO CARES ABOUT MINISTERS!

2 out of 5 stars Unsound logic.......2002-08-03

Like Kenneth Haugkýs book, Antagonists in the Church, G. Lloyd Rediger promotes an approach to church conflict which will invariably result in individuals being unfairly labeled as ýclergy killersý or ýantagonistsý which then is used to justify limiting their involvement in church communities. Dr. Rediger defines levels of conflict based on the histories of those involved. He therefore labels as abnormal any conflict when one or more of the persons involved have a psychiatric history especially a history of being abused. This is not a useful or valid approach. If you follow his reasoning to its logical conclusion, he is advocating that 25% of women (the estimated rate of sexual abuse in this country) be excluded from church leadership positions because they were victimized as children. His line of reasoning results in his labeling a business tycoonýs abuse of power as ýnormal conflictý since there is no known history of prior emotional disturbance. He also advocates that any lay person making a complaint against a minister be investigated to determine their psychiatric history. The ethics of his approach are never considered. Rather than label conflict as normal or abnormal based on individual personal histories, a fairer and more ethical approach would be to examine specific behaviors and find effective ways to promote positive outcomes for the majority of individuals involved. It is possible to reach consensus even when individuals are being ýdifficult.ý Despite these serious limitations, Dr. Rediger does promote a healthier lifestyle for pastors and advocates that an effective grievance process be in place in all church communities.

Book Description

Today's workforce is experiencing job burnout in epidemic proportions. Workers at all levels, both white- and blue-collar, feel stressed out, insecure, misunderstood, undervalued, and alienated at their workplace. This original and important book debunks the common myth that when workers suffer job burnout they are solely responsible for their fatigue, anger, and don't give a damn attitude. The book clearly shows where the accountability often belongs. . . .squarely on the shoulders of the organization.

4 out of 5 stars A useful framework to address burnout........2006-11-06

"The Truth about Burnout" was written a decade ago, but its analysis and recommendations may be more valid today than they were when the book was published. The first couple of chapters are a bit tedious, but the book takes off once the authors start digging into causes of burnout and laying out ways to overcome burnout.

The authors describe the causes of burnout in terms of six mismatches between people and their jobs: "work overload, lack of control, insufficient reward, breakdown in community, absence of fairness, and conflicting values." These six mismatches provide a framework for developing interventions to address burnout and build employee engagement.

For me, the most encouraging feature of the book is the authors' suggestion that the intervention can be bottom up as well as top down. The authors provide roadmaps for both kinds of intervention.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books on a Pervasive Problem.......2006-02-21

Christina Maslach is well-known in psychology as the person who has championed the problem of burnout over more than two decades. For quite a time she was something of a lone voice.

Burnout is a prolonged response to chronic physical, emotional and interpersonal stressors at work, leading to exhaustion, cynicism and inefficacy. In a memorable term the authors describe it as erosion of the soul.

Burnout has to be seen in the larger organizational context of people's relationship with their work: it's usually the job and the organization rather than the individual, although there are clearly differences in individuals' resilience to burnout.

There are many symptoms of burnout, including trouble sleeping, constantly worrying, feeling unappreciated or "used" at work and feeling less effective or competent. Many people find that they easily becoming angry or irritated and altogether too many start drinking or abusing other substances.

Burnout is immensly costly, not just for individuals, but also for organizations. I agree with another reviewer who lamented the paucity of data on just how costly burnout is to a company's bottom line. But judging by the number of corporations now asking epxerts to go in and help them deal with the burnout problem, I think that the message is getting through.

This is an excellent overview of the problem nearly ten years ago. If anything, the situation is becoming worse, and Maslach, and now an expanding band of other psychologists has continued to do empirical research on the problem, and have been coming up with ever more sophisticated solutions.

But even with the passage of time, this book remains highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars VERY VALIDATING.......2005-10-04

tretise on what most of us already know about bureauracracies. I've not finished reading the "what to do about it." yet, but already know my first questions when contemplating a new job will be "How many people were fired or quit in the past 6-9 months?"

4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2004-03-02

Christina Maslach and Michael P. Leiter's groundbreaking book debunks myths about burnout and holds organizations accountable for this epidemic, which has swept the work world. The authors detail how organizations can treat and prevent burnout, and take a critical look at its deep-rooted causes, including lack of engagement and conflict between employees' values and their jobs. Conversationally and with great impact, the authors support their points and suggestions. We recommend this book to executives, managers and employees. Now go home and get some rest.

5 out of 5 stars A REAL CURE FOR A MODERN DAY PYCHOLOGICAL EPEDEMIC.......2003-06-02

In the Truth About Burnout Drs. Maslach and Leiter propose the first real cure for burnout and the key to releasing peak potential in the workforce.

Much of the past advice on the topic of burnout focuses on how to help people cope with burnout. These techniques are useful and come in handy, but unfortunately they do not position or fortify people to reach higher levels of performance. Simply treating the symptoms of burnout is like giving someone a medicine that provides temporary relief from external signs that they have a cold. After the medication wears off, they still have a virus raging through their body that's slowing them down. Likewise the "virus" that causes burnout is disengagement with work and no matter what temporary relief solution we provide to ease the pain, in the form of workshops on how to cope and "employee assistance programs" at the end of the day the "virus of disengagement" is still alive and well and impairing performance.

This book is for anyone manager or individual contributor who has decided to stop coping and "sugar-coating" and instead seek a real and practical solution to burnout. I highly recommend it.

Book Description

Have you ever fantasized about taking time away from your overworked life? Nights uninterrupted by email? Days to pursue set-aside dreams? Do you promise yourself that “someday” you will get a break?

Mary Lou Quinlan had those “someday” thoughts. But her hard-earned job as CEO of a New York advertising agency claimed most of her waking hours. Exhausted and losing motivation, she was so desperate she perversely imagined breaking her leg to get some time alone. Then, she declared a brief timeout. During her time off, she slept late, took walks, danced the salsa, kept a journal and ultimately, uncovered the roots of a new business. In the process, she rediscovered herself.

Time Off for Good Behavior is the result of listening to women like her, who realized enough was enough. Quinlan tells the stories of dozens of women who sacrificed their health, relationships, their good humor and a good night’s sleep until they found the courage to ask themselves if they were happy with the life they were living and made the decisions to take a life-saving break.

Mary Lou Quinlan explores the factors that compel you to work so hard and examines how to take back control of your life. She explores our unwillingness to give ourselves permission to rest so that we can re-imagine our futures. And she shows the powerful, self-fulfilling changes that can occur when we do decide to take that rest.

Whether you contemplate leaving a career that took years to build or just need a long vacation to assess what you want next, you’ll find practical tools and bolstering advice throughout. Each chapter ends with provocative questions to help you plan your good behavior reprieve. Specific exercises on financial planning, advice for negotiating time off, and tools to uncover your passions make this a must-read for women who are ready for “someday.”

Time off for Good Behavior ultimately shows that stepping away from everything—even for a short while—often means ending up with so much more.

5 out of 5 stars Mary Lou Quinlan Is a Dynamo.......2005-04-19

As a man, I got a lot out of reading Time Off for Good Behavior. Mary Lou showed me how I can get more out of life and work by being smarter, better AND by taking it easy occasionally. I could relate to many of her experiences and I felt I learned from how she coped. Anyone, male or female who wants to have a rich professional and personal life will gain by reading Mary Lou's insights.

5 out of 5 stars A Validating Must-Read!.......2005-03-23

Mary Lou Quinlan really knows what she's talking about. As a thirtysomething single woman, reading "Time Off for Good Behavior" was extremely validating. Her own story and the stories of other women captured in this book are truly rivoting, and made me realize I am not alone. Amazing that the book summarizes how I've felt all of my working life(and even before then). A serious page-turner; you feel like you're having an initimate chat, rather than reading non-fiction.

5 out of 5 stars A Potentially Life Changing Book.......2005-02-28

If you are a hard-charging, hard-working professional woman who takes her laptop to the beach, you will recognize yourself in Time Off for Good Behavior. I could identify with many of the Type A "good girl" women Quinlan describes. She's right on target. She makes you think about your daily life in a whole new way. And, afterall, this is first step in making a change.

5 out of 5 stars Sometimes we need know it's o.k. to cry "uncle.".......2005-02-18

As I was reading this book, I felt like I had met my soul mate. I, too, am a Type-A "good girl." ("You need this report by Friday, would Thursday be better?") Fortunately for me, I was forced into a sabbatical before I really knew that I needed one (and then, of course, spent the next two years struggling with the fact that I had my entire identity wrapped up in my job/career, that only now am I beginning to enjoy life). I was floored when Mary Lou wrote about being so tired that incurring enough injuries to require a stay in the hospital (without being life-threatening) seemed an attractive way to take a break from the craziness. That thought had crossed my mind more times than I would like to admit. If you're thinking about taking time off, or are so tired that you can't even think, then you might want to pick this book up. Even if you can't financially swing a sabbatical, it's helpful to understand that you are not alone in feeling overwhelmed with your life.

5 out of 5 stars Balancing Act .......2005-02-16

I recently read Mary Lou Quinlan's book and enjoyed it because at times, Women Can't Do It All! Being a mother, a spouse, taking care of the house and managing a career doesn't always provide women with the time to take a break and consider what we want for ourselves. This Sunday's NYTimes (business section) interview with Mary Lou Quinlan made me realize that this is a much bigger issue.

We need to slow down, take charge of our lives and start
LIVING, rather than racing.

Book Description

How empathy can jeopardize a therapist's well-being.

Therapist burnout is a pressing issue, and self-care is possible only when therapists actively help themselves. The authors examine the literature from neurobiology, social psychology, and folk psychology in order to explain how therapists suffer from an excess of empathy for their clients, and then they present strategies for dealing with burnout and stress.

this is an excellent resource book both for personal as well as professional reasons. i wish this book was available 30 + years ago when I started my journey of helping others. this book should be included into the required reading of any psych/counseling curriculum.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you! This book will help many helping professionals........2006-03-22

I read Help for the Helper cover to cover as soon as it arrived and all I can say is WOW and THANK YOU!! This is a book that addresses the needs of helping professionals--all sorts! Babette Rothschild begins the book with a preface on "Common Sense;" something we all need for taking care of ourselves (and our clients, for that matter). She's become a kind of champion of Common Sense in psychology and I'm glad to see her apply this important life-tool to the self-care of professionals. Her three central chapters begin with theory of neurophysiology: on Empathy, Arousal and Clear Thinking. She then goes on to outline things we can easily do to combat the consequences of our work and avoid burnout, vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue. Though the book examples are pointed to psychotherapists, the theory and the exercises will be useful to anyone (like me) in the helping professions. One thing that stands out is that she underscores us each finding the tools that help us best. She offers expert advice without having to be "the" expert. Consistent with her advocacy of common sense, she knows that each professional has to find his or her optimal combination of resources. For those who are interested in neurophysiology, this book covers cutting edge theories and research, including the recent discovery of mirror neurons. For the psychotherapist, sections on countertransference and projective identification offer a fresh view on these core concepts. I believe that anyone in the helping professions, including those who pitch in following disasters, will find this book to be a huge help for their own well-being.
