In BEAUTY FOR ASHES, she outlines the major truths that brought healing to her life and describes how other victims of abuse can also experience this healing, including how to deal with the emotional pain of abuse, how to understand your responsibility to God for overcoming abuse, why victims of abuse often suffer from other addictive behaviors, how to grab hold of God's unconditional love, and the importance of God's timing in working through painful memories. By sharing her personal story, Joyce Meyer wants to help others find inner peace through their belief in God.

5 out of 5 stars Offers Real Answers.......2007-08-08

Having been a victim of abuse Joyce is able to speak to others who have been abused on their level, not just from observation or education. She doesn't just leave the reader in the place of accepting that they have things they need to work through, but she leads them through the same steps she took by God's hand to receive that healing. I have used this book to lead a women's study group and have been wonderfully blessed to witness the changes that have come out of their applying these truths to their lives.

5 out of 5 stars Healing .......2007-07-05

I have read the book twice and found it very refreshing. I got a new copy for a friend that was sexually abused.

5 out of 5 stars Beauty For Ashes: Receiving Emotional Healing.......2007-05-17

This book is a benefit to anyone regardless of their history. Personally, I have had a emotional, trama filled life until God got a hold of me, but this book helps tie in God's Word an apply it to real life situations.

4 out of 5 stars A place for healing to begin.......2007-05-10

Joyce tells her story in a manner that is bold, courageous, and transparent. She holds nothing back; both her strengths and her shortcomings are displayed on the pages of Beauty for Ashes. This book helped me take a good look at myself and to then focus on the nature and promises of God. It helped me at a time when I was very ill and had faced many losses. (Author, With Great Mercy.)

5 out of 5 stars Living Proof.......2007-04-12

God brought this book into my life at just the right time. In reading this book I've finally been able to face the abuse of my past and start the road to recovery and healing. The Holy Spirit has moved in my life in an amazing way as a result of Joyce Meyer's teachings. I've been able to come to terms with horrible emotional pain and am experiencing the freedom of forgiveness towards myself and others. Through the wisdom I've gained I've already broken off a dysfunctional relationship and am growing stronger everyday in Christ. I now realize that my pain is my past and doesn't have to dictate my life now or in the future. I am free, I am whole, I am God's precious child and I am loved unconditionally by my Heavenly Father.

Joyce Meyer is offers very practical information. No fancy words or super spiritual mumbo jumbo that makes you feel like you can't apply these principles in your life. She makes sense, and she's been through it too.

I recommend this book for ANYONE who has endured any type of abuse: sexual, physical, emotional or verbal. Those memories, feelings and thoughts don't have to hold you in bondage any longer. Shame, guilt, rejection, sadness, depression, lonliness....you can allow the Holy Spirit to break these strongholds over your life.

I know...because I am living proof.

A cautionary Cold War tale (first told by Dr. Seuss back in 1984), The Butter Battle Book still has a lot to teach about intolerance and how tit-for-tat violence can quickly get out of hand. Explaining the very serious differences between the Zooks and the Yooks, a Zook grandpa tells his grandchild the unspeakable truth: "It's high time that you knew of the terribly horrible thing that Zooks do. In every Zook house and every Zook town every Zook eats his bread with the butter side down!" He then recalls his days with the Zook-Watching Border Patrol, as he gave any Zook who dared come close "a twitch with my tough-tufted prickley Snick-Berry Switch." But when the Zooks fought back, the switches gave way to Triple-Sling Jiggers, then Jigger-Rock Snatchems--even a Kick-a-Poo Kid that was "loaded with powerful Poo-a-Doo Powder and ants' eggs and bees' legs and dried-fried clam chowder."

With lots of fun and more-than-fair digs at the runaway spending and one-upmanship of U.S.-Soviet days, The Butter Battle Book makes a chuckle-filled read whether you're old enough to get the historical references or not. (And with all the Bitsy Big-Boy Boomeroos still in service, this book's message is far from obsolete.) (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

This is not appropriate book for young children. It's a bit violent with too much political undercurrents. The rhythm and rhyme are off as well. Choose another Seuss book.

3 out of 5 stars disappointd.......2007-07-31

I bought this Seuss because it was rated as a number one with NewYork. I thought it was over the top Cold warish and it simplified the problem in a very trivial way. I would not recommend it to anyone and was quit disappionted in the strong political nature of this book. Thumbs down ):

5 out of 5 stars Another great allegory from the undisputed champion of children's writing.......2007-02-15

This book was written years after the Lorax, but it certainly has a lot in common with Suess' most controversial and perhaps powerful book. The book is essentially an allegory of the cold war. With two different ideologies battling it out in secret rooms with weapons that are never used.

Like the Lorax, this book is great for children and adults alike, because it discusses such an important subject in such an accessible and colorful way. Adults will see the parallel between the book and the conflict of the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. and children will see an allegory for themes such as racism , and other thoughtless ignorances.

This is a powerful book, and in my belief an essential part of anyone's libary. If you are the mother or father of a young child, my reccomendation goes much deeper. Use this book as a way to start a discussion on any conflict that doesn't make sense to the child. I highly recommend this book to anyone, especially as a teaching aid.

At the same time, dramatic changes have taken place regarding criminal justice and social work policies and practices applied to domestic violence intervention. And while the prevalence of domestic violence has declined slightly, national estimates still indicate that every year, approximately eight million women are abused, battered, stalked, or killed by their husbands, boyfriends, and other intimate partners. Featuring cutting-edge research and expert intervention strategies, the Handbook of Domestic Violence Intervention Strategies: Policies, Programs, and Legal Remedies is designed to prepare professionals to swiftly and compassionately meet the multiple needs of women and children who have suffered from domestic violence. It is a comprehensive guide to the latest research, public policies, and legal and criminal justice responses, covering federal and state legislation as well as trends in police and court responses to domestic violence. This is the first book to include court-based technology developments and new research related to the duration and intensity of woman battering. Highlighting actual cases and promising programs, the handbook also addresses important social work issues, including risk assessment protocols, a new five level continuum of woman battering, intervention methods, and treatment models. The book also examines the myriad legal issues and health problems facing the most neglected and vulnerable battered women. 5 out of 5 stars Family Violence.......2007-08-04

I really found this book helpful and full of information. I used it for a class that I was taking called family violence and abuse. Wallace does an excellent job outlining indicators of child abuse and he also provides different catergories of abuse such as elder abuse and alternative life style abuse. I often find myself struggling to use books assigned to each class because sometimes they are just not useful. I have spent lots of money on class texts that I have not opened once. THIS WAS NOT THE CASE WITH THIS BOOK. IT WAS VERY USEFUL.

    5 out of 5 stars Superb!!!.......1998-11-21

Harvey Wallace's text book, which is being used in my Seminar:Domestic Violence Course, is a wonderful source of information about all types of domestic abuse. The extensive coverage on the many forms of child abuse is an excellent source of information for all careers, especially social workers, teachers, school psychologists, and future or current parents. I am also very glad to see that Wallace includes Elder Abuse and Gay and Lesbian Abuse in his book, types of domestic violence which often go overlooked.

2005 ECPA Retailer's Choice Award winner for best biography/autobiography!
Steve Saint was five years old when his father, missionary pilot Nate Saint, was speared to death by a primitive Ecuadorian tribe. In adulthood, Steve, having left Ecuador for a successful business career in the United States, never imagined making the jungle his home again. But when that same tribe asks him to help them, Steve, his wife, and their teenage children move back to the jungle. There, Steve learns long-buried secrets about his father's murder, confronts difficult choices, and finds himself caught between two worlds. Soon to be a major motion picture (January 2006), End of the Spear brilliantly chronicles the continuing story that first captured the world's attention in the bestselling book, Through Gates of Splendor.

A fascinating account of true sacrifice for the benefit of others. Your thinking about what is important in life will forever be changed. This is the stuff of life transformation. Only read this book if you are serious about having your lifestyle challenged and your worldview reshaped.

4 out of 5 stars incredible and wonderfully affirming story.......2007-08-22

A wonderful story that jumps from tragic to comic throughout - this is the autobiographical tale of the son of a missionary who came to love the very man who ended the life of his father (at the end of the spear).

Life affirming and filled with views on social consequences and responsibilities to indigenous peoples.

    2 out of 5 stars Very Dull.......2007-06-14

This book had all of the markings of a good true story, but it was written more like a diary, and not a very interesting one at that. A lot of it did not ring true.

    5 out of 5 stars Awe Inspiring.......2007-03-13

If you ever wonder if one person can make a difference, then you need to read this book. It will make you delve deep into yourself and consider your priorities. This book creates the desire to truly make a difference in this world. It also is thought provoking on how we, as "educated people", are quite egotistical and think our way of life is the only way of life. A truly magnificent story!

5 out of 5 stars Girard at his most brilliant.......2003-02-11

Over the course of his long career, Girard has moved from literary criticism to anthropology to Biblical exegesis. This work of comparative religion sees him at his clearest and most brilliant as he compares the Gospel readings of violence to mythological interpretations that conceal the role mimetic desire plays in our conflicts. Especially revealing is a late chapter on "the concern for victims," the absolute value of modern culture. But it is in the book's final pages, where Girard finally postulates the existence of a power superior to violent contagion, that I See Satan Fall Like Lightning becomes truly great. This is a work of superb intelligence, among the most powerful and thought-provoking I have ever read.

    3 out of 5 stars Won't convince the skeptical.......2002-12-08

Overall, this is an interesting, concise presentation of the anthropological importance of the contents of biblical narratives as contrasted with the the other narratives close in proximity in the general sectarian milieu from which the Bible emerged. Though a certain way of thinking and approaching the texts is explored that is itself dynamic and inspiring, it fails to be more than merely rhetorically convincing. Strangly, Girard claims throughout his text that his observations and interpretations are neither apologetic or biased towards Christian interpretation but, rather, scientific. While it is plausible that the scientific side of his argument has been established in greater detail by those that endorse his theories about mimetic desire culminating violence in human societies and as the foundation of human society, it's not contained in these pages. Nonetheless, this still serves as an interesting introduction to Girard's ideas being both short and straightforward.

4 out of 5 stars French Egghead Knows His Stuff.......2001-06-18

Not an easy book to summarize. Girard is a French egghead and former Stanford professor who believes to understand human behavior, we must first understand something he terms*mimetic desire*. . .with mimetic desire meaning that people only desire what other people have or what other people desire. Simply put, people imitate the desires of other people (role models). Further, this imitation leads to conflict (Girard terms this conflict *scandal*) which turns violent. This violence threatens to tear apart communities, and is only remedied when all rivals of mimetic desire unite against a single victim, and sacrifice that victim (a *scapegoat*). Girard identifies Satan as both the instigator of scandals, which cause the disorder, and the sacrifices of the victims, which then restore order. Hence, Girard answers Christ's famous question "how can Satan cast out Satan?" Satan causes disorder in the world, and then restores order in the world, in order to remain in control of the world. Girard demonstrates in this amazing book that human sacrifice is the very foundation of civilization (similar to The J Man's own theories as outlined in The Cain Theory of Civilization). Of course, the greatest example of the *single victim mechanism* is the crucifixion of Jesus. Jerusalem is on the brink of riot, but the masses imitate the murderous desire of the Jewish hierarchy toward Christ. So powerful is the violent contagion of this mimetic desire, even Jesus' disciples become infected (Peter's denial of Christ being the most famous example). The crucifixion of Christ, sanctioned by the Roman governor Pontius Pilate, placates the mob and restores order. Hence, Satan believes once again his *single victim mechanism* will enable him to maintain control of the world, and also to defeat the Son of God. Satan, the Accuser, has accused Christ before the crowd, and the crowd has believed Satan's lie. They call for Christ to be put to death. Girard reveals Satan has used this tactic over and over again throughout human history. It is the cornerstone of the myths and false religions which hold the world in his bondage. But Christ defeats Satan at his own game, through the Resurrection. The Resurrection unmasks Satan as an impostor. Christ's innocence, revealed by the Resurrection, nails Satan's accusation to the cross, and publicly exposes it for the lie it is. Christ's resurrection frees His disciples from the violent contagion of mimetic desire, and they set about to take the Gospel to the world. As Paul wrote, it is the power of the cross "which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory" (I Corinthians 2:8). This is an academic text, not easy to read and not without its flaws (Girard is foggy on the exact nature of Satan, and is not a Bible literalist), but Girard's understanding of human behavior as the Bible reveals it, and Satan's ability to manipulate human behavior, make this an important book to read in an age when the violent contagion of mimetic desire unites the world again and again in near-planetary acts of *single victim mechanics* (Iraq, Serbia). . .with those acts seeming as test runs for the Apocalypse to come.

    Book Description

A half-century of psychotherapy research has shown that the quality of the therapeutic alliance is the most robust predictor of treatment success. This unique book provides a systematic framework for negotiating ruptures and strains in the therapeutic alliance and transforming them into therapeutic breakthroughs. Cutting-edge developments in psychoanalysis and other modalities are synthesized with original research and clinical wisdom gleaned from years of work in the field. The result is a practical and highly sophisticated guide that spells out clear principles of intervention while at the same time inspiring therapists toward greater creativity.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a real gem!.......2006-06-15

This book is a real gem! The authors, who are both highly respected clinicians and researchers have produced something truly unique here. At one level it's a systematic guide to dealing with therapeutic impasses. Any therapist concerned with issues such as patient resistance, transference and countertransference, working with hard to reach patients, patient anger and hostility, and so on, will find this book invaluable. At another level, this book provides a remarkable review of cutting-edge developments in contemporary psychoanalysis and spells out their clinical implications in a clear and precise fashion. Anyone who is interested in finding out what's happening in relational psychoanalysis (perhaps the most important development in psychoanalytic theory and practice to emerge in this generation), will find this to be one of the clearest and most coherent expositions available. And finally, this is the only book I know of that focuses extensively on the role of MINDFULNESS PRACTICE in the training of therapists.

Readers who appreciate this book will also be interested in the authors' training DVD "RESOLVING THERAPEUTIC IMPASSES" which is available on Amazon.com.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best "how-to books" on what works in therapy!.......2005-01-29

I am a practising pshychologist and I've read numerous books on "transference", "counter transference" and the "therapeutic alliance" (everything from Freud to modern theorists) but nothing comes close to this book: It's very informative, higly structured and precise. It has tremendous practical value for all therapists (regardless of theraputic orientation, though it might even be of "extra value" to the CBT-therapist) especially if you "get stuck" when treating a patient or if you're treating "personality disordered" patients. Good balance between theory and case examples. Also of great help if you're a therapy supervisor!

      Book Description

Since empirical research on domestic violence began in the 1970s, it has become clear that without intervention, significant percentages of domestic violence cases escalate into more serious incidents. However, with the exception of cases resulting in homicides, there are no reliable criminal justice statistics that document the rates of serious domestic violence incidents. What, then, are the most effective means--in terms of safety and cost--of protecting victims? Featuring writings from noted contributors, Do Arrests and Restraining Orders Work? grapples with the markedly different results of research and analyses on the effectiveness of arrests and restraining orders. This probing volume examines the proper role of arrest and the degree to which the criminal justice system can rely on restraining orders to prevent domestic and other kinds of violence. Representing a wide array of research methods, the chapters include a variety of perspectives, including those from police, prosecutors, the judiciary, and probation officers. Timely and provocative, Do Arrests and Restraining Orders Work? asks the challenging questions that will help the criminal justice system move toward effective solutions. This volume is an excellent resource for students as well as researchers and academics in criminology and for a wide array of criminal justice professionals, including police management personnel, attorneys, and policymakers.

      Book Description

In over 40 years of mediating conflicts—between parents and children, husbands and wives, management and workers, police and communities, and warring groups around the world—Marshall Rosenberg has learned it is possible to resolve conflicts peacefully, and to everyone's satisfaction. It's not compromise—it's a caring and respectful quality of connection between the parties in conflict that meets everyone's needs.

Get to the Heart of the Matter—Most of us lack the vocabulary to express what we're feeling or needing, but we are well trained at pointing fingers at others as the "cause" of our pain. When people trust that their feelings and needs are valued - and heard - it immediately helps reduce tension and hostility, opening the door for peaceful resolution. Applying Dr. Rosenberg's Nonviolent Communication (NVC) process inspires genuine cooperation by focusing on the unmet needs behind the conflict. Whether you're a professional mediator or wishing to resolve a conflict with your spouse, child or colleague, NVC offers practical, usable technique to get to the heart of the issue.
