Trying to find Work from Home Jobs-Don't Use this Book.......2006-09-19
My best friend bought this book for me in hopes that I could find a work from home job, as I am totally disabled and cannot
work outside my home. I went thru each page carefully, sent emails to companies that only had emails, never receiving one single response, I visited websites that were listed and found that they no longer existed or were for sale and then I sent via
US Mail letters of interest to companies that only had street addresses listed, and every one of them (15 in all) came back to
me 'address unknown'. If you really, seriously need to find a job or a business to work from home, this is NOT the book for you.
All you need to know is probably in here.......2006-03-31
This book contains valuable information and gives great ideas that make you think outside the box. I didn't realise how many options I have to find a satisfying job that I can run from my home on flexible time. The Work-from-home Sourcebook has been very helpful. I'd highly recommend it!
The only work-at-home "list" I recommend.......2005-05-17
Many who want to work-at-home are looking for "The List" of companies to which they can sign up and get paid. These lists are often full of scams and if they aren't, are usually worthless because these companies may not be hiring. But, for the person who is determined to get a list, Lynie Arden's Work-At-Home Sourcebook is the best. It provides companies with business opportunities and home employment programs. Companies can be searched by type and location (many only hire locally). Compared to the questionable "lists" this is the most thorough and researched compilation of work-at-home programs. It also provides some information on working at home and telecommuting. Its a good resource for the work-at-home wannabe but don't be surprised if you don't find a job. Many jobs have specific requirement and simply because a company uses home workers doesn't mean its currently hiring.

Work -At-Home Directory full of scams.......2007-08-16
I ordered this book hoping for legitimate work ideas. I mailed in for information from 15 companies listed in the directory. Every one of them sent me an unprofessional brochure filled with typos, misspellings, and printing errors and each requested money ($30-$60) in order to get more information. Many were extremely vague about what it was I would receive for this money. A few said the money would get me information on how to find companies that need people to work at home! Isn't that what this directory was supposed to do? This book is a waste of money and utilizing it is a waste of time, stamps and SASE envelopes.
Wonderful Guide.......2003-03-14
I can't wait to get the 2003 publication. I found last years (2002) guide for at home work a real life saver. Keep up the GREAT work.
You Get What You Pay For!.......2001-12-31
This 30-page rag is filled with the usual Work-At-Home fluff that you will find just about anywhere. From envelope stuffing and home assembly to distributorships, this publication is a great example of the opportunities you should absolutely avoid!
While the content is undeniably stale, [price]is small price to pay to learn about what YOU SHOULD NOT PURSUE if you are looking to start a business of your own.
Work At Home Directory.......2001-12-03
I bought and used this book and found all the opportunities I tried were nothing more than money down the toilet! The book states that the printers have checked out the businesses listed in it and found them reputable but there is no way this is possible! Out of five that I tried there was only one I didn't prove to be bogus and the reason for that is because it would have cost at least a hundred dollars to do so and I was not throwing away any more money!
waste of time and money!!.......2001-11-29
I know it was only [price] but it's not worth 1 cent so I returned it. I didn't want anyone to be making money off of this! It is just a scam!!

A good "idea" book, but short on local job availabilities.......2004-04-24
If you are in dire straits and are hoping and dreaming that this book solve you financial situation, I urge you to borrow it from the library first so that you at least can read it for free the first time.
If you like it only then buy it. There is some good info. in it, but except for some survey work (which I declined because they required a two--or three-day training period out of state) I certainly never found any local jobs with it. And most featured in the book did require a certain degree of education and experience, or you already had to be employed by the company, like 3M or similar, and then go about getting the job internally. The last ones are probably never advertised.
And the "opportunities" to "work at home" and get "easy pay" that you see in the local rag, stapled to electrical poles, in the classifieds and the multi-level marketing schemes inflicted upon you by people you know are only opportunities to make others rich and you poorer.
I should know. I looked and looked and looked on my late elderly mother's behalf, and I wasted a lot of time & money on her behalf too.The people responsible for such misrepresentation are the scum of the earth, for they give false hope to those who already feel hopeless and afraid.
I'd suggest looking up the company name at Rickross.com and also the Better Business Bureau before investing your time or money. You'll never get the former back, and probably not the latter either in my experience.
If your state or local government has an official Job Service chances are there have far better jobs listed at their website and a lot more of them as well. Speaking from personal experience, if you can put together a well-crafted resume, (our job service will do it for you for free) or even if you simply use the template for one in MS Works or similar, it will put you head and shoulders above the masses. And there are even occasional work-at-home ones listed there too.
I guess if you're really hard up for money and can get away for a while, there's always crab fishing in the Bering sea off of Dutch Harbor, Alaska. Just keep in mind that even though you might make 30K for five days' work, there's a reason it's considered the most dangerous job in the world
Great Information.......2002-07-26
Frankly, I am surpirsed by the negative comments. It's like people buying a lottery ticket and complaining when they don't win.
I think that this is the most comprehensive book on the subject. Sure, there are not going to be work-at-home jobs in every area of the country -- they are not that easy to come by! And yes, it will probably be somewhat outdated, even before it hits the store shelves. That is the nature of business -- and books!
But all in all, I found the information credible and up to date. Plus it was full of ideas that give you jumping points from which you can start, even if there is not a job available in your area.
I bought the book for my brother who is disabled, and unable to get a "regular" job. I read it before I sent it to him, to be sure I was sending him something worthwhile. I thought the book had some great information, and yes! He was able to find a work-at-home job.
Be forewarned, work-at-home jobs are not always easy to come by. You (gulp!) actually have to qualify (!!) for the position, and in many cases, you must live near the company. If you ACTUALLY think that you can make money from home stuffing envelopes (or some other "easy" sounding job) from home, and send off [some] bucks to get the "position" be prepared to be out [money]. On the other hand, if you're looking for a real work-at-home job, and not some scheme, this book is a great starting point.
Had some useful information and ideas.......2001-10-05
I did not actually contact any of the companies listed in the book, but the book was helpful for me in my work at home solution. It gave me several ideas on different things that can actually be done from home. Some of the actual businesses listed in the book do only hire local residents and unfortunately they were not in my state. It did give me some encouragement and ideas in my search. I did think that the book was helpful for me.
Not What I Expected.......2001-08-22
I was looking for a book to give me some sort of a list of companies that would hire home-based workers and thought I had found it in this book. When I finally recieved the book, it was completely NOT what I was looking for. Sure it had a list of companies, but the positions I qualified for were in far away places where I had to become a 'local resident'. Then when I did find that "one in a million" company that you could be located anywhere, the company was either out of buisness or no longer hiring homeworkers. I am so glad that I was able to buy this book where I could return it instead of through these [...] websites where I'd have to get a lawyer just to get my [money] back. I am extremely dissappointed in this book and hope others don't make the same mistake that I did in purchasing it.
Outdated Information.......2001-05-21
It seems that every edition of this book has contained seriuosly outdated information. I guess they are selling copies since they keep cranking out new editions. Very Disappointing.

"Without Leaving Home" ? This book was absolute GARBAGE !!!.......2001-07-05
Did the authors realize that over 80% of the Colleges they put in this book require some "on-campus" requirements? Suppose I live in New Jersey and attend a school in California, and I'm required to be on-campus 2 times a year for a week each time, HOW is that considered "Without leaving home" ? Some Schools in THIS VERY BOOK require students to attend weekend seminars 3 to 4 times a year!!! Can Somebody do us all a favor and recommend a book that has Distance Education with "100% NO ON-CAMPUS requirements" ? Please Change the TITLE of the Book. Going from Maine to Arizona DOES indeed require travel.
I found this book the most accurate and trustworthy........1999-11-06
I was led to this book as a subscriber of the free Virtual University Gazette. The Gazette is published online each month by Vicky Phillips, and lists new distance learning programs as they come online each month. By combining this book and the free listings in the Gazette I got the most accurate idea of where to attend graduate school online. See the Gazette at http://www.geteducated.com. The book and the Gazette are a god-send. Unlike other guides this one only lists a) accredited degree programs; b) programs that truly can be completed from the comfort of your home.
We purchased 3 distance learning books; only kept this one........1999-11-04
I was going crazy with all the hype I'd read online about distance learning. Bought 3 books to determine where and how I could earn a master's in human services. Best Distance Learning Graduate Schools is the book I found the most useful and accurate. Returned Peterson's Guide and Bear's book. I especially liked the introductory chapters on how to design your own degree and accreditation. Phillips and Yager are real pros.
This book did not even include programs I knew about........1999-09-14
This book appeared to review a random sample of programs. It did not even include two programs from leading Universitites that I already knew about. The book was worse than worthless.
Good reference, but inaccurate........1999-08-11
I bought this book while searching for a distance graduate degree in Biology. The book indicated that there was one University that offered such. However after contacting that University, I found that there was no such offering, nor had there ever been.
Though it seems that there are plenty of other schools to choose from in other subject areas.

Good household advice c. 1827.......1998-05-23
The author, a black freeman and a prominent figure in Boston Abolitionist politics, published this remarkable work in 1827 not only as a handbook for servants but as a guide for proper behavior by masters toward their employees.
The recipes given are practical and detailed, and the editor believes "still useful today", but some ingredients may prove inconvenient, (bullock's gall) or downright dangerous (mercury) and adding live eels to a master's libations to discourage intoxication seems more a prescription for brief employment than a useful intervention.
Quibbles aside, Robert's work stands as a readable and useful view into an era little known to most Americans today.
