5 out of 5 stars A breeze to read and very informative!.......2005-04-04

This book offers a very clear and concise explanation of the SBA loan process. It really helped me understand the fundamentals of SBA lending in a way that allowed me to use this knowledge in my practice. To be fair to the author and publisher, I giving it the full five star rating, even though some of the information in the book is out of date by now.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent. Delivers what it promises........2003-06-04

WORD OF WARNING: I haven't actually put into practice the advice in this book, so I can't say whether the information is correct.

It is, however, presented in a VERY clear and understandable and logical manner. The book strikes an excellent balance between keeping it simple but NOT talking down. It assumes the reader is an intelligent adult (not a "dummy", if you know what I mean) who doesn't know much about the SBA or getting money from same. It then goes about giving you all the steps needed to understand what the SBA is, does and how you can take advantage. It doesn't make it sound "easy" but it does make it sound doable. The book is very detailed, which you want in such a book, but doesn't read like a textbook. It combines down-to-earth advice and experience, with some hard and fast rules and steps to success.

Although I haven't read every book on the subject, it's hard to imagine there is a better one out there. Highly recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars The SBA Loan Book by Charles H. Green.......2000-06-25

Charles H. Green has taken the mystery out of commercial loan financing. With millions of dollars of SBA financing under his belt, he has converted that experience into an easy to understand, logical resource text in the SBA Loan Book. As a small business planning and development adviser, I find this publication as the best hands-on guide to the maze of commercial financing. Praises to publisher Adams Media Corporation for their ability to see the need of small business owners every where and for investing the time and money to produce this outstanding publication. Every Entrepreneur should own this book as should every new SBA loan officer involved in the process.

5 out of 5 stars A Review For All Cycles.......2000-02-12

Just as life has clearly defined cycles, so does a small business enterprise and the SBA book by Charles H.Green depicts it clearly. Whether it's the start-up or expansion cycle, his book will show you how to plan for the loan, how to go through the document review, and how to enjoy the award of a loan. It walks you through the long and frightening process of getting a loan with sound advice and forms that inform and educate.

What if turned down? It shows the applicant why it happened and how to repair any damages to their business' ego. It very smartly says, "it's not personal it's business."

As antrepreneur dealing with capital formation on a regular basis, I recommend this book to all who know the trials and tribulations of "getting the money." You will find an answer to your situation, guaranteed.

1 out of 5 stars This one is not a winner.......2004-09-25

I have to give the company that compiled it a thumbs up for the packaging, anything beyond that gets a 1 out of 5.This item is basically a CD with internet websites on it that you have to spend weeks and months researching it yourself, no real research was ever done on their part other than provide internet sites to the government agencies that provide financial assistance. I recommend this product for people who don?t have access to the internet.

1 out of 5 stars not worth the money .......2004-08-24

This disk is very broad and really doesn't give insite to receiving grant money. It also wasn't very easy to navigate though. I have found way more useful information from simply searching on the internet.

1 out of 5 stars Not as useful as it could be ..........2004-07-10

Ive been writing grants for some years now and thought that I could make my life easier by purchasing the CD set. When I recieved the 2004 Guide to Federal Grants, I was immensely disappointed. Instead of creating a useful, cross referenced CD, they simply took webpages and their links and transferred them directly into PDF format. I could have done the exact same thing using Google and Adobe Acrobat. There are no cross-references, no additional information into grants, and tabs were not even written into the PDF to assist with nagivation. Instead, they recommend that you use the "search" feature available with Adobe Reader. It is NOT worth paying their asking price, go to your local NonProfit Resource Center instead or just do a Google search for Federal NonProfit Grant Sites.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good general overview.......2007-05-09

If you know nothing about financing a small business, this book is a good place to start to understand the basics of business finance. It's broken down into several basic sections:

    1. Choosing the Form of Your Business
    2. Business Plans
    3. Equity Financing
    4. Debt Financing
    5. Securities Law
    6. Licensing and Franchising
    7. Friends, Angels, and Venture Capital Sources
    8. Presentations
    9. Corporate Governance
    10. How to Choose Professionals

If you've been to business school or even started a business before, you're probably not going to learn anything new here. Financing a startup pretty much mean using your own money (borrowing or savings) or getting somebody that knows you personally to lend you the money or buy into the business as a partner in some way. Of course the business plan is important and you might be able to raise money from venture capitalists or angels, but this book doesn't go into many specifics on that or any of the other topics in the outline.

Still, if you don't know anything about these basics, the book is a good read. If you do, you might want to look elsewhere for more specific information.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Introductory Book for Financing a Business.......2005-01-17

This is a good introductory book valuable for people who need financing when starting or running a small business. It covers important topics for obtaining financing in a very readable manner. It provides good advice, such as, "Keep your options open until the deal is done and do not forget to plan an exit strategy...." and then lists several exit strategies. The authors give advice on when to have a limited liability company run by its members or run by a board of managers, what one of the purposes of writing a business plan is (hint: it's not just for running the business), and also provides a business start-up checklist. There is a sample business plan and sample formation documents for a corporation and for a limited liability company. The authors discuss how to offset any lack of depth on the management team. The chapter on Equity Financing tells the business owner what the potential investor will be looking for in deciding whether to invest. Advice is given on debt financing, and includes website addresses of various government sources. The Securities Law chapter covers a complicated area broadly without getting too deep for the reader. The book concisely explains the difference between licensing a product and franchising a business. The authors describe eight different types of angel investors, how to target them for the current needs of the business, and lists what factors angel investors and venture capital firms may use in evaluating a business.

The book is not a substitute for having the advice of an attorney during start-up and during financing, but it contains very useful information that will make the reader more knowledgeable in growing the company. This book would also be a very good gift for someone who is considering whether to start a business.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive book.......2004-11-15

This is the most complete and comprehensive book I've ever read on the subject of financing a small business. Not only does it cover some real funding alternatives (with pros and cons) but it tells you how to do it as well. It's a must read for every small business person

I especially like the way the book is organized so I can find what I need and refer back to it easily. It should be part of every entrepreneur's reference library.

While there are a limited number of programs offering direct loans to individuals, most programs provide funds to state and local governments or other organization to manage the distribution of assistance according to local needs. For example, a VA or FHA loan comes from a financial institution such as a bank, credit union, or mortgage company, not directly from the Federal Government." e Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) Please see the Table of Contents tab for a complete list of the agencies with programs included on this CD-ROM.

Vast archives of important public domain government information that might otherwise remain inaccessible are available for instant review no matter where you are. This book-on-a-disc makes a great reference work and educational tool. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, comprehensive, thoroughly researched, and portable - everything you need to know, from the federal sources you trust.

      1 out of 5 stars Pointless.......2004-07-10

Save yourself a lot of money and time ... just visit your local NonProfit Resource Center. These CD's are direct burns from government websites with a cheap case and covers. I got them and returned them the same day.

1 out of 5 stars do not buy.......2004-07-07

It is not from government. Useless disk and don't waste your time and money. Search else where.

      1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-08-13

The CDROM is essentially a dump of the information found on government websites such as SBA, SEC, etc.

The information is voluminous so if you have a slow modem, there may be some value in purchasing the info on the CDROM for the sake of having it consolidated in one place. You will learn little new if you have already been to the websites.

Also, some of the links on the CDROM do not work properly. You open the page in Adobe Acrobat and receive and error message saying the page has to be opened in a browser. You open the page in a browser and you get a message saying the page has to be opened in Adobe Acrobat.

That kind of foolishness more or less sums up the value of the CDROM from my perspective.

      1 out of 5 stars big time-waster.......2003-05-11

Not only is all of this info available online, but the CD gives you a collection of non-indexed, gigantically HUGE Acrobat PDF files, some about 100MB in size. Navigating a 5MB text PDF is painfully slow - try 100 MB. Finding what you're seeking is practically impossible, and navigating PDFs of that size takes an eternity. Even a fast machine takes a couple minutes just to load the files into Acrobat, never mind doing searches, etc.

If they had broken up the files and named them logically (instead of titles like A1, B1, etc.), and provided some kind of indexing application or document that would point you to specifically what you wanted, then, yes, it might be handy to have. Otherwise, go online, and find answers 100 times more quickly. This is a ridiculously poorly done CD-ROM in this day and age. Big waste of $, in my opinion. If you have a slower/older computer without much memory, you'd REALLY want to avoid this thing like the plague.

1 out of 5 stars You can get this on line for free.......2003-05-05

This disc contains pdf files downloaded from government web pages. Save yourself the money and go to the SBA, GSA, SEC web pages yourself and look up the information that is relevant to you.

        Book Description

This set of two CD-ROMs, newly revised and expanded for mid-2004, contains an amazing collection of the finest federal documents and resources on government grants plus assistance programs for small businesses, along with an entirely new section on obtaining files and records from government agencies through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and the Privacy Act! This mid-2004 edition has 10 additional federal agency grant files and eleven new files devoted to information requests.

There is individual coverage of hundreds of federal agencies and departments, along with tips and resources for grant proposal writing. In addition, next-generation search technology allows complete cross-file indexing and makes all files on each disc fully searchable! The depth and breadth of the coverage of federal grants and small business programs is truly awesome.

FEDERAL GRANTS - We go far beyond just the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (with its nearly 17,000 pages of loans, grants, surplus equipment, and training from 1883 agency and department programs worth $300 billion). The two CD-ROM discs have over 70 unique sections devoted to specific agencies or topics, with over 115,000 pages of material! Our new FOIA and Privacy Act coverage has information on contacting every government agency, with guides to writing your FOIA request and a full reproduction of the FOIA law, the Privacy Act, and related topics.

There is specific information on each of 15 types of assistance: Formula Grants, Project Grants, Direct Payments for Specified Use, Direct Payments with Unrestricted Use, Direct Loans, Guaranteed and Insured Loans, Insurance, Sale/Exchange/Donation of Property and Goods, Use of Property, Facilities, and Equipment, Advisory Services and Counseling, Dissemination of Technical Information, Training, Investigation of Complaints, and Federal Employment. Categories of service provided include: Agriculture, Arts, Business and Commerce, Community Development, Consumer Protection, Disaster Prevention and Relief, Education, Employment, Labor, and Training, Energy, Environmental Quality, Food and Nutrition, Health, Housing, Humanities, Information and Statistics, Law/Justice/Legal Services, Natural Resources, Regional Development, Science and Technology, Social Services and Income Security, and Transportation. Our reproduction of the CFDA alone would be substantially less expensive than the printed version offered by the Government Printing Office at $63. As the catalog itself says, "Get started today exploring the amazing world of grants and loans provided by the Federal Government!" Our new document collection, however, goes far beyond just the CFDA - by nearly 100,000 pages!

SMALL BUSINESS ASSISTANCE - There is comprehensive information for entrepreneurs with documents, forms, and materials from the Small Business Administration, General Services Administration, and Securities and Exchange Commission. It includes the complete SBA contents from our SBA CD-ROM: library of documents, forms, startup kit for small business, information about loan programs and financing, laws and regulations, small business research reports, success stories, training workbooks, disaster and terrorist relief loans and aid, franchising information, international trade assistance, listings and directories, and SBA standard operating procedures. A full set of "frequently asked questions" (FAQs) provides a wealth of information about how the SBA can assist small business owners. The SEC material includes questions and answers, rules and pending rules that apply to small businesses, small business forms and associated regulations, and other information from the Office of Small Business Policy.
