Book Description
In 1939, hatred took root in South Africa, where the seeds of apartheid were newly sown. There a boy called Peekay was born. He spoke the wrong language–English. He was nursed by a woman of the wrong color–black. His childhood was marked by humiliation and abandonment. Yet he vowed to survive–he would become welterweight champion of the world, he would dream heroic dreams.
But his dreams were nothing compared to what awaited him. For he embarked on an epic journey, where he would learn the power of words, the power to transform lives, and the mystical power that would sustain him even when it appeared that villainy would rule the world: The Power of One.
Customer Reviews:
"First with the Head and Then With the Heart...".......2006-11-08
There are two versions of Bryce Courtney's "The Power of One"; the original version and this, the junior novelisation. The two are quite different so make sure that you double-check what publication you're getting before you order. I would suggest the older version for most readers, since this basically tells the same story in simplified form. However, in Australia and New Zealand, "The Power of One" has reached almost cult-status in terms of popularity, and some younger readers will leap at the chance to familiarise themselves with the story before they are ready to tackle the more complex and violent subject matter of the original. Furthermore, it is a perfect choice for school libraries and/or compulsory reading in classrooms.
Like the adult version, the junior novelisation is concerned with the life of Peekay, a young boy living in 1930's South Africa, coping with racism, tension between the various social groups of the time (the Boers, the English and the Africans) and the growing threat of World War II. This younger version begins in the same place as the adult one, with Peekay being sent to a boarding school in which he is urinated on by his fellow students - a clear sign that Courtney is not prepared to soften the harshness and cruelty of the original book for the benefit of a younger audience. In comparison this story ends after the famous concert at the prison, the moment in which the adult novel really begins.
The junior novel follows Peekay's journey from childhood into earlier adolescence and the beginnings of the adult world, told in significantly less detail and in more simplified language than the first "Power of One". On the way, he makes friends from every race and class, learning the most important truth of his life: to think with his head and then with his heart. In particular, he finds work in a jail, inventing an ingenious way to help the convicts communicate with their families on the outside, and discovers the sport of boxing along with the remarkable idea that you do not have to be the biggest in order to be the best.
Courtney's gift comes from finding the grey areas in each situation, showing us clearly that one race, one country, one ideology is never wholly righteous; goodness can only come from an individual. Near the beginning of the book Peekay is persecuted by Nazi-supporters; later a dear friend of his unfairly is jailed for being a German. Humanity's overwhelming desire to classify and then judge people based on these classifications is never more frustrating than it is here, and it is a lesson well worth learning.
Although this is a more-than-adequate introductory book for younger readers eager to tackle "The Power of One", I would recommend to anyone else over the age of twelve (or any confident reader under that age) that they simply pick up the first (and best) adult version.
growing strong.......2006-02-25
how you can feel with a little boy's hardship in a boarding school and how you hope for his stamina and how you love his intense friendships that bring him on his way.
You really live with that life and that is best a book can do.
A powerful story of courage and change.......2006-01-14
If Bryce Courtenay's The Power Of One sounds familiar, it's because this represents a young reader's condensed edition of a prior hard-hitter which became both an adult classic and an acclaimed movie of the same name. It's great to see such a powerful novel condensed with youth in mind: grades 8-12 will find compelling the story of 1930s South Africa and a boy who faces apartheid and prejudice in a country where his childhood is marked by loneliness and dreams of changing lives. A powerful story of courage and change evolves.
Great Novel - but CONDENSED.......2006-01-07
I have read the Power of One, the unedited version and it is brilliant, inspiring, and brutal - one of the best books I've read. However, this edition that is being sold here, is the Young Reader's edition, which isn't immediately obvious from Amazon's description or the picture. It does say so on the cover, but it's very small unless you enlarge the picture. So, my review gives it a 2 as it may be an unpleasant surprise for those who want to read the actual novel.
A Masterpiece.......2005-12-24
I read this book before the crap movie was ever released, and it's a good thing, too. Whoever says the novel is dead needs to take a look at this. Courtenay has written a brilliant bildungsroman that you literally can't put down. You might even end up re-reading certain passages over and over, such as the boxing match between the protagonist and a Goliath-like opponent. If you have a bright pre-teen, give him this, and I bet he'll enjoy it.

Customer Reviews:
Very good book.......2007-06-06
I own the first book "Power of positive thinking". I can hardly wait to read the other two. At one point in my life I was covered with negative thinking and it drastically affected my actions and situations around me. However, using this book changed my life. I trust in God more now, have more faith in him, and I am much happier today. Also, more people started noticing and they liked the happier, more in control me. Praise God!!
Full of Stories, no real direction.......2007-03-27
The book teaches through others inspirational stories; there is no real teaching on how to have a positive attitude. I was expecting the book to give me steps on how to have a positive out look. It is also a religious book, which I didn't expect when I ordered it.
Excellent Boost!.......2007-01-05
This book is an excellent comprehensive boost for anyone who wants to welcome change and new ways of seeing their world and the issues they may have in relationships, wealth, success and life in general. I haven't finished reading it yet - but have found that even just one page a night before bed does wonders in slowly opening us up to change and positive ways of thinking. It's difficult to do in a world that bombards us at lightening speed with so many mixed positive and negative, draining messages. This is a great way to keep your feet on the ground, mind focused on the important things and even if you aren't religious to explore yourself and spirituality. Like a pocket psychotherapist ;-)
PEALE SOME OFF FOR ME!.......2006-11-18
STILL APPROPRIATE AFTER ALL THESE YEARS. I READ IT 30 YEARS AGO, NOW IT IS HELPING MY SON.
Buy it. NOW........2006-11-04
Easily the best book I've ever bought. If I could rate this book six stars, I would.
Six months ago, I decided to change my life and head for the military. I wanted to be the best and decided to try out for the Rangers, an especially ambitious goal considering my activity level was on par with most vegetables. My friends laughed at me, I bought this book.
Using this book as my motivational guide and Stew Smith's 12 Weeks to BUD/S as my exercise plan, my pushup/run/situp/swim scores absolutely shot through the roof. I have never felt motivation like I felt after reading through Norman Peale's book and if it wasn't for this purchase, I honestly believe I would have abandoned this goal and would still be miserable, sitting on my couch, and playing video games, not out getting in shape for the Rangers.
That was over six months ago now, and am heading off to basic pretty soon with my body ready and my mind motivated.
Thank you Mr. Peale even though you are probably dead, I am a very happy customer and have even bought a couple copies for my friends. The concepts in this book are the best things that have ever happened to me and have absolutely revolutionized my life.
They can revolutionize yours too. All you have to do is buy it and use it.

sick up for yourself.......2007-04-03
this is an important work. I've submitted it for consideration by the youth education faculty at my church.
Helping your child's Self Esteem.......2007-03-18
This is an excellent book. My son and I read a little bit of it at bedtime and keep a notebook to jot down our thoughts. It has improved his self-worth and it has helped me relearn social skills that I should be using in my own life.
Help during difficult times.......2007-02-22
My six year old son has been struggling with his father's military deployment. He needed some positive tools to help him communicate exactly what he is feeling and what he needed from the adults around him. I am so glad that I found this book and started reading it with him. We do the journaling together and I have also learned a lot. I have seen a big difference in his attitude and behavior. It really does give kids the power they need to feel secure. I have plans to buy several copies of this book and give them as gifts to my closest friends. It is a great book!
very useful book for the adult as well as children.......2007-02-22
Recently i read this book. Firstly i bought it for my little sister, but on reading i found that my mind has been healing gradually.
Generally speaking, it's fact that 'feeling' is ignored. Although our feeling is hurted, try to get away from it or calm down for oneself. But i realize that it may cause to be some problems for me. Hurted feelings absolutely have to be solved. someone who be same to me need to read this book.
Goals and Expectations........2006-11-05
I thought this would be a good book until I read the paragraph telling kids not the set goals too high and keep expectations realistic. I tossed it after that.
Shouldn't kids be settting high goals for themselves and working to achieve them? Even if the goals seem unrealistic, should anyone really tell a kid his expectations are too high?

Create Powerful Changes in Your Life, with the Energy of Your Own Self-Esteem
What is self-esteem? A type of confidence? Or something far greater? On Self-Esteem, Caroline Myss casts a new light on this often misunderstood subject, redefining self-esteem as an actual "core power" that is essential to our evolutionary progress. In fact, Myss teaches, your potential for success in life is determined by how greatly you "esteem" or value who you truly are. Beginning with a look at its roots in childhood, and branching into the real world of daily experience - including finances, relationships, and spirituality - Myss illustrates the incredible changes that come when we nourish this life-giving force. Building on her revolutionary bestsellers Anatomy of the Spirit and Sacred Contracts, Myss explores:
How your strong self-esteem threatens other people - and why you must strengthen it anyway
How your intuition, spiritual guidance, self-healing capacity, and your self-esteem all depend on each other
PLUS special guided exercises for cultivating healthy, vibrant self-esteem, available only on this audio session, and much more
"How would your life change if your self-esteem improved?" Myss asks. Now you can find out, with this "energetic template" for radiating the quiet power of your own Self-Esteem.

This work is a true "Diamond in the rough"..Caroline is right on about self esteem,it is our core power! If you want to change your life and take control of your life rather than allowing others to do it for you than get this incredibly awesome self help CD set. After listening to this program my young daughters(upon hearing it while I was listening) asked to borrow it and out of the mouths of babe~~This is a program that should be required in schools!
Your life will not change overnight, you must do the work upon recognizing patterns...but,It's so easy to do and Very Empowering!
A must have...I highly recommend this program to all.Very satisfied here.Thank you Caroline.
Truly Helpful.......2007-07-30
"Self Esteem" has real potential to guide and teach anyone who is interested in improving their self esteem and potentially improving their lives generally. This should be taught to every teenager on the planet. It does require you to be very honest with yourself and even make a couple of minor adjustments to your physical life, nothing impossible though. I think this CD and with the support of prayer anyone could improve their lives. I really do wish this kind of knowledge was available in schools, maybe one day.
What a CD Set, one of the BEST by Caroline Myss.......2007-07-24
This CD set not only explains of how Caroline Myss views Self-Esteem, it gives insight into personal healing and emotional healing. This CD has worked in giving me inspiration on taking care of my body, mind and spirit! And each time I listen to it, it hits on what I need at the time. Then, I let it sink in and then listen to what my inner voice says about it. It has made a big difference in my life! If you only buy ONE of Caroline Myss CD sets, this should be the one.
Worthless.......2007-07-20
This was without a doubt the worst "Self-Help" book I have ever read. It
rambles and has no point and gets no where near anything telling you how to develop self-esteem. I will not purchase any additional items by this author.
Well worth the money.......2007-07-13
An excellent overview of the whole self esteem issue. Gets rid of many myths and sets up where low self esteem comes from and what you can do to make it better. Myss has made a very important contribution to the world.
Book Description
Phyllis Mindell, an acclaimed expert on professional communications, shows women how to transform themselves by transforming their language; shed weak words, phrases, and gestures; empower themselves to win attention and respect; and get their ideas across with confidence and power.
Perhaps the best teacher of how the power of language can transform is an unexpected one: Charlotte the spider of E.B. White's, Charlotte's Web. Mindell demonstrates how Charlotte communicated messages that gained national attention and saved a friend's life. As a model, she combines female strengths of wisdom and compassion with the determination and power to make a difference.
As part of Prentice Hall Press's highly successful How to Say It tm series, How to Say It tm for Women is packed with practical tips, techniques, and examples that arm women to grapple with every communication issue, from choosing the right word or sentence to speaking, reading, writing, leading, dressing, and interviewing effectively. Readers will learn how to: shun words that weaken messages and make women invisible; sail through interviews; assess and develop leadership skills; say NO, kindly but firmly; respond appropriately to slurs, insults, and harassment; say the one winning word that gets people to follow directions.
True stories about women in every field, along with quotes from Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Carla Hills, Amelia Earhart, Elizabeth Dole and others, enable women to tap the power of words to persuade, motivate, establish authority, and make a difference-- without sacrificing their integrity, their compassion, or their femininity.
Customer Reviews:
What every woman should know!.......2006-03-09
I read about this book - actually, I consider it a textbook - when searching for tools on expanding my career. I usually wouldn't buy something like this, and instead look for similar information from free 'Net sources. But on a whim, I bought it, and am so glad I did. I'm not even halfway through and what I've learned already has helped me to speak and express myself in a way that gets people's attention, and has improved my professional image. One of the best tips, which comes early in the book, is catching myself using the "I think/like/don't like" phrase when I want to discuss facts. I do it, so I don't look like a know-it-all. Dr. Mindell, however, shows several ways to express facts without appearing as though I have all the answers.
The author also cites common grammar and language mistakes that keep women in the background, and prevent us from asserting our strengths and skills. The concept of Weak Language is especially intriguing; in reviewing the examples, I saw myself in almost every one. Her solutions are very attainable, but she strongly recommends practicing this new language with another woman. I have, and my women friends were amazed at how powerful this "new" language sounds.
These are hard habits to break, but with the tips and examples in this book, I'm getting better at it. And I can see the difference in how others treat me; more importantly, I feel different about myself. The book is really a life-changing experience, for someone who has never really put much thought into my "image" but is continually frustrated at not getting the positive attention for my work success as I believe I deserve. Thank you Dr. Mindell!
Review by the Business Librarians of the Carnegie Library, Pittsburgh.......2005-07-17
The lights go down. The speaker strides confidently towards the podium, pauses and makes eye contact with the audience. And from the very first moment you know, instinctively, that it's going to be an excellent presentation. An experience like this reinforces your desire to create your own unique aura of self-confidence. What can you do to make this happen?
One thing you can do, right away, is to get a copy of Dr. Phyllis Mindell's book, How to Say It for Executives: The Complete Guide to Communication for Leaders. It's an excellent guide for acquiring and practicing the communication skills you'll need to get ahead and stay there, complete with exercises, charts, lists, examples, and a simple format that makes it all easy to digest.
Primary among those skills is something obvious but often overlooked: listening. When you pay close attention when others are talking, instead of interrupting or jumping to conclusions without hearing the entire story, it will be noticed and appreciated. Of course, a favorite chapter for us here at the library is "Reading Like a Leader," in which the author doesn't tell what to read, but rather how to read - both speedily and deeply - in ways that will build skills in analysis, synthesis, and argument. A chapter on nonverbal leadership breaks down the powerful code spoken by gesture, dress, and body placement.
Preparing a presentation is the centerpiece of How To Say It For Executives, and Dr. Mindell meticulously lays out each step of the process. Before you begin, gather some information about the audience. The speech should be written out, using an absolute minimum of sentences that begin with "I", and rehearsed. The most objective way to find out how you really look and sound in front of an audience is to videotape the speech. After viewing it, turn off the sound and watch it again. Now that you know where improvement is needed, complete the assignments in each chapter that target problems commonly faced by public speakers.
You never know when hostile or difficult people will be in the audience. One individual can spoil an entire presentation by monopolizing the floor or asking inappropriate questions. The author offers several techniques for tactfully handling a variety of problems and disruptions that can occur in an open forum.
Perhaps the most valuable lesson in How to Say It for Executives is this: Make a concerted effort to stop using weak words like "I feel", "sort of", "I guess" and "I think" in everyday conversations as well as presentations. Instead of coming across as tentative and unsure, practice substituting phrases that will make your sentences strong and persuasive. Although the advice in this book is directed primarily to those in leadership positions, anyone but a hermit will find life is made much easier by becoming a better communicator
Not Helpful.......2005-04-25
I bought this book at a womens' leadership conference a couple of years ago. I read it cover-to-cover and decided to try the skills covered when communicating in my office. My supervisors' opinions of me changed drastically - they began to view me as surly and defiant. I didn't think any of the verbage alternatives were rude, but in the organization where I was working, the higher-ups expected you to consider them omnipotent and not have an opinion of your own. Ultimately one should consider their audience and adjust their language accordingly.
Great basis for coursework.......2005-04-05
I am using this book as a reference for my students in a business english course in Japan. Although the students find reading it cover to cover a bit too much (lower intermediate English level) when I point out specific points and pages I want them to read and understand, they really get a lot out of it. The book is written well and ideas are developed and backed up clearly. I would recommend this to any teachers of women students.
A valuable resource for aspiring women leaders.......2004-07-30
I can't recommend this book highly enough. As a leadership coach in Silicon valley I often help women managers and executives to become better leaders, and this book speaks directly to two of the biggest roadblocks to women's advancement: communication and confidence. These women are shocked at how closely Mindell understands their work challenges. The book takes highly volatile, challenging workplace situations and offers suggestions that immediately actionable.

Customer Reviews:
looking in a mirror.......2007-06-14
I didn't like the book at first. But that is characteristic of anyone seeing something in themselves that needs to be changed. After going through the book 3 times and using it as a practical guide I am remembering how to like myself again. My "what if's" don't have to rule my life.
Best Self-Help Book Ever.......2007-05-12
This will probably be the only self-help book you ever need if you follow the Self-coaching techniques the author recommends. Logical, practical advice without fluff aids in identification, understanding, and most importantly, fixing of many problems that may have previously seemed beyond your ability to resolve.
Self-Coaching To The Rescue.......2007-04-08
This is an original and powerful book by the guru of self-coaching, Dr. Joseph Luciani. If you are looking for a detailed step by step approach to feel as mentally healthy as possible, this is the book for you. It will not only markedly reduce your anxiety and depression, it will teach you the principles of carving out a life that is joyful and meaningful for you.
Easy to read and digest with many helpful examples from his own life as well as his patient's lives. Highly recommended.
Read This Book!.......2007-03-20
I'm pushing sixty. I've been in and out of therapy and have been reading self-help books all my life. I ordered this (the CD version) with little hope. Not much seems new anymore.
Surprise! I was almost immediately engrossed. Luciani is wonderful. Using plain talk and simple analogies, he sums up what all the niche-marketers and long-winded "experts" are currently trying to sell us as "new." There's nothing new here. But Luciani's approach is refreshing, smart, and absolutely sane.
If you want to make a change (or changes) in your life, "The Power Of Self Coaching" will absolutely make a difference in your approach and give you information and activities that will not only show you how to change, but will inspire you to change.
How can anyone not love an author who wants his epitaph to read "I'd Rather Be Reading This"?
excellent book.......2007-03-12

Effective Communication with Others.......2007-01-10
If you have a history of being involved in problems with others, you need this book! Have you been fired? Have you had people turn against you? Have you had experiences of being stabed in the back? Get this book, study it and apply it's principals. I have used this information to help clients turn their business relationships around. It has improved the quality of my own relationships and opened doors of opportunity. It can do the same for you.
A self-improvement classic!.......2006-09-06
If your career or volunteer activities require you to interact with lots of different types of people and, more specifically, to get them to do what you want them to do, read this book! Lest there be any confusion, Giblin does not suggest that his readers manipulate, badger or cojole people into doing things; rather, he teaches how to change oneself so that people will want to see things your way. H.t.H.C.a.P.i.D.w.P preaches self-improvement, not strong-arming.
No matter what you do in life, the principles taught in this book, if applied, will make you a more likeable, more pleasant, more relatable person. With the confidence you will gain from applying the principles you will learn to like yourself, the necessary first step in winning the confidence of others.
If it were up to me, I'd make this book mandatory reading for every high school student in America.
Old but relevant.......2006-06-26
This book was written some years ago, but it is relevant even for today.
I haven't read all of the book as of yet, but it is very good and useful so far.
A genuine classic! Very helpful indeed!.......2006-05-07
Not after I finished it and started to write the review I didnt realize this book was first published in 1956. That means two things. First, human nature doest change. Second, it's so good that it can stand the test of time and become a classic.

J.C. Staehle, after analyzing many surveye, found that the prinicpal causes of unrest among workers were the following, listed in the order of their importance:-
1. Failure to give credit for suggestions
2. Failure to correct grievances
3. Failure to encourage
4. Criticizing employees in front of other people
5. Failure to ask employees of their opinion
6. Failure to inform employees of their progress
7. Favoritism pg 24
Remember, human beings are innately selfish beings. They are first, last and always interested in themselves, in their job, their family, their home town, their ideas. Even a question like, "Where are you from?" shos that you are interested in the other person, and consequently gets him interested in you. pg 89
Use "Happy Talk" as much as possible. Nobody likes a Gloomy Gus. Nobody likes to sit and listen to a prophet of doom. People dont like to hear bad news. pg 91
When a would be policitician asked Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes for advice on how to get elected to office, Justice Holmes wrote him: To be able to listen to others in a sympathetic and understanding manner is perhaps the most effective mechanism in the world for getting along with people and tying up their friendship for good. Too few people practice the "white magic" of being good listeners. pg 94
Most of us want the other fellow to think we are clever, intelligent, "smart". But the person who goes around always making "smart remarks", always knocking himself out to be "clever," is not voted in by the other fellow as a "clever person". Instead he gets elected to the classification of "smart-aleck," "blow-hard", or "egotist." pg 95
These three Yale psychologists found the best way to get ideas accepted is to use a low-pressure technique, one of calmly presenting facts, and leaving out threats or attempts at using force. pg 106
Two rules for administering praise. 1. It must be sincere. 2. Praise the act or the attribute, rather than the person. pg 135

The Nibble Theory if Right On!.......2000-04-29
I first came across this book an a student years ago and found it very insightful. That feeling has not changed and I strongly recomment this book for anyone that deals with people. You gain a firsthand look into what makes people run, and understand why some people behave the way they do! Tell everyone you know to read this book-it will make the world a nicer place.
This book changed the way I think..........2000-01-11
I bought this book eight years ago for a leadership class at the University of Michigan and it changed the way I think and work. It's made me a much more successful leader in business and life.
The concepts it contains are hard for many people to understand, but the book explains it in the easiest language. It's all about how people need to deal with others: by working together instead of competing, we all win. If we all listened to the advice in this book, the world would be a much more productive, better place to live.

Great foundation book for individual and group development........1999-08-18
Kaleel uses easy language and pictures to convery the foundation tenets of personal development and boundaries. The kernel part is a great way of looking at how our values, talents, apptitudes and attitudes are the core of who we are. And how these intangibles combine to create our effectiveness at certain tasks/jobs- and also transcend our entire history of employment.
The nibble part converyed, for me, how we let the 'voices of others' keep us from achieving our TRUE potential AS WE DEFINITE IT! Not as ours want us to be. And to keep us as they want us to be they, either consciously or unconsciouly, NIBBLE us to stop us from growing.
I share this with my employees so that they understand why I value the fact that they learn quickly and take initiative more than the number of databases they can name/use. And that when I give feedback it is not a NIBBLE, it is "invitation" to grow!
And Kaleel does all this in 74 pages using a circle in various pictures to make reading easier. Buy this book for your employees by all means, but most importantly, BUY IT FOR YOUR CHILDREN!
A powerful tool for self knowledge.......1999-01-06
I have used this book for years in a variety of contexts. The Nibble Theory gives readers a new way to think about how they deal with others, and starts the process of replacing Power Over with Power With. The process for finding your Kernel of Power is deceptively simple: it takes a lifetime to complete.

Oprah life makeover maven Cheryl Richardson wants you to start rocking the boat. Stand Up for Your Life urges readers to stop playing it safe by putting their needs and priorities aside. Her premise: by spending less time listening to others and more time strengthening your relationship with yourself, you can learn to govern your own life and influence others.
A personal coach and the bestselling author of Take Time for Your Life, Richardson promises readers "self-honoring strategies to transform your fear and doubt into self-trust and power." Drawing on self-quizzes, examples from her coaching clients, and her own experiences, she explores key issues for developing this inner authority. The book focuses on creating boundaries, developing "courage muscles," resolving conflict phobia, clarifying purpose, honing self-discipline, stating intentions, and graceful truth-telling.
At times, her clarity is compromised by pop-psych speak and references to her earlier books. Richardson is at her best when she is specific--for example, the well-targeted exercises and self-assessments or an insightful list of behaviors that prevent people from leading their own lives. Readers who follow her lead can expect an attitude adjustment and increased ability to leverage self-knowledge into a purposeful life. --Barbara Mackoff

In her most provocative work to date, Cheryl Richardson, the New York Times bestselling author of Take Time for Your Life and Life Makeovers, challenges readers to begin an interactive training program that will transform internal obstacles such as self-doubt, conflict phobia, and a fear of what others think, into a new foundation of courage, confidence, and self-esteem. By investing in their personal and spiritual development, readers will build a strong character that allows them to create a larger vision for their lives -- a vision of service and contribution to themselves and the world. Part mentor/part best friend, Cheryl Richardson picks up where her two earlier books leave off, by offering new "inner life skills" to readers who are ready to stop hiding their power and start living according to their Divine assignment. Using real life stories and examples (including her own), she offers a practical, step-by-step plan to: Build self-trust and inner confidence by strengthening your relationship with yourself and your inner life. Identify and eliminate the thoughts, words, and actions that rob you of power and self-esteem. Face "conflict phobia" head-on by telling the truth with grace and love. Use fear as an ally to build your courage muscles. Pass up good for great by centering your life around your values. As readers work through each phase of the program, they will find that they have not only the power and vision to fulfill their greatest potential but the ability to help others do the same. Stand Up for Your Life is a practical, hands-on guide that will inspire readers to own (and use) their talents and gifts so they can lead passionate, more fulfilling lives.

Very Helpful.......2006-08-31
This book came to me at a time when I was discovering ways to overcome depression. It helped me to realize that one of the causes of my depression was that I had ignored and repressed my own needs in order to take care of everyone else. Eventually, if you take care of everyone except yourself, you will run out of things to give. It's like overdrawing your bank account. You can't keep writing checks without replenishing the supply. Cheryl Richardson will always be a hero in my eyes for sharing information that helped me in creating a life I love living.
GREAT BOOK!.......2005-12-05
I found this book to be a great read. Anything that will make you stretch to raise your own expectations of yourself or help yourself is always worth the money.
Get a taste of life coaching.......2005-11-14
Although the subtitle reads: "Develop the Courage, Confidence and Character to Fulfill Your Greatest Potential," the book is not necessarily designed for confidence seekers who struggle with anxiety and fear.
However, reading and participating in the exercises of this book can be a great way to experience life coaching.
If you are hungry for deeper meaning and abundance in your life, you will find the coaching questions helpful for clarifying what you really stand for and what you want in your life. The questions can connect you with the dormant inspiration awaiting you beneath an everyday layer of doldrums and demands. Using this book can nurture a weary soul and might be a gateway to the inspiration you seek.
However, if you are seeking tools to overcome a strong resistance and fear of moving out of your comfort zone, you may not find what you need here. In order for the exercises to be really effective for confidence building, it is better if the reader already has a healthy edge over internal anxiety, fear and resistance.
Either way, if you do the exercises, they will experience results that have at least a subtle effect in your experience of the life and beauty around you.
Very Helpful.......2005-05-28
This book gives a lot of insight on building a better you. It gives a lot of information that you can relate to and then gives you the tips, exercises, and tools you will need to live a more positive life. If you read this book and follow along with the exercises and techniques the author gives, you will start to notice a difference in your attitude fairly quickly. I reccomend this book to anyone who wants to get a start on building self-confidence and a positive attitude change.
A Solid Effort!.......2004-03-02
If you want to run your own life - and who doesn't? - Cheryl Richardson will tell you how. The first step in her program is getting a clear sense of who you are and what you want. Then, tap into your inner power to develop the courage and confidence to move ahead. Richardson's examples from her personal life and from her clients' stories add lively human interest, and her comprehensive step-by-step program might intrigue many readers, particularly those who have just started reading self-help literature. Otherwise, this is a repeat of a frequently taught lesson about how to decide what you want and take steps to get it. Her exercises can help you clarify your goals as well as find and destroy any emotional barriers standing in your way. We recommend this book to readers, particularly women, who haven't already been down this path and absorbed this message; you will find that Richardson is an encouraging cheerleader.

relaxing.......2007-03-27
I found this book to be just what I needed it to be. Feeling trapped and depressed it bought me back to life and made me realize I am the one in control of my happiness and in how others treat me and in who I allow in my life. Once again I have to hand it to Sylvia, just the fact that positive things are happening to me now, proves to me whatever powers she possesses, she has the power to make me feel good about myself.!!! Isn't that the most important thing in life? Highly recommended reading
Never too many lessons for life?.......2007-01-10
My daughter in law mentioned this book in 2005 to me mentioning how much she would love it, no she is not subtle. So I bought it for myself. It was quite good but not bragging I am beyond alot of what was in the book. But I did give it 4 stars because I bought it this year and sent it to her and my son and hopefully they will learn something out of it. So far don't think so since they are ruder and even more unapreciative than before. Sylvia is excellent and I have many other of her books.
waste of time.......2006-07-31
I think when Silvia first started writing she was good but I'm sorry her last few books including this one are sarcastic and weak. The depth is not there and the joke cracking is out of line. I learned nothing here like I did in her earlier books Waste of money.
Good but not great..........2006-07-17
I believe you are referring to Deu 18:10 - 12. I make more typos than most..lol. Anyway, this chapter is addressing the Levites (Tribe of Levi) only. We should not pick and choose phrases and use them out of context.
Also, if you really want to understand the "Old Testament", read some good research books from the Jewish Publication Society or the Jewish Lights Publishers.
Her books are good, not great. Nothing new inside but it is a good way to bring Gnosticism and Spiritism to lay people. Allan Kardec stated most of what is contained in her books in his works.
This particular little book is good mainly for the CDRom.
Let Go of pains and move forward.......2006-05-27
This is yet another self help book and yet another Sylvia Browne book and together is it one of the best books I have ever read. Sylvias gift comes through in her writings and she gives you step by step weekly instructions on helping and healing yourself
