Praise for The Peebles Principles
"Don Peebles is an example of what entrepreneurs are all about. In this engaging and witty book, Peebles shares insights from his own success in the world of high- powered real estate. What makes this book different is Peebles doesn't just focus on the positive, he discusses the failures too—something every entrepreneur can expect in his journey to success. Customer Reviews:
Basic reading for any Real Estate developer.......2007-10-11
I read this book in two days...it is amazing! I am a Real Estate developer (not so big as Mr Peebles, of course)and I did three projects in Miami Beach. Reading that book was like reading the story of my life! It is recomforting to read that bigger developers has the same struggles and experiences than the rest of us! It is very inspirational to see how he has coped with unfavorable situations, turning into positive ones. He is also a pro negotiating contracts and designing projects from scratch.
the most remarkable thing: not only he writes about his success projects, but also about his failed ones. He extracts his "Peebles principles" from the good and the bad ones.Gerat book, you cannot stop reading it (speacially when you have met several of the characters of these stories)
Should Be Required Reading!.......2007-09-24
I can't stop talking about this book! I first heard Mr. Peebles on the Steve Harvey morning show. I was impressed. Then, I had the pleasure of hearing him speak at a Michigan Minority Business Development Council/General Motors event. I was even more impressed. I took home my autographed copy of his book that day and began reading it. I was addicted! I could not put it down! Every spare moment I had, I was in this book! He literally becomes your mentor. This book is a practical application manual. He shares what went wrong and what went right, he names names and pulls no punches! Mr. Peebles has put to shame many other authors, claiming to want to teach us how to become rich in real estate or other industries, for holding out on us!
Must read for ANYONE aspiring to do big deals!.......2007-09-23
This is a very easy to read, step-by-step book of the anatomy of a deal. Often we say that we would like to be the lamp in the room of a big deal and Peebles puts us there time and time again! The candor and honesty expressed regarding the deal structure and his thoughts behind the decisions made was nothing short of generous! I have been in business for seven years. I could not figure out why my firm had not advanced to the next level... Now I understand! For a man, independently wealthy, he charitably gives the rest of us some insight to advancing our own goals and closing our own deals! I have recommended the book to at least 10 colleagues in two weeks!
I love the Peebles Principles.......2007-09-04
I read books all the time about very successful people, most happen to be in industries other than in the Real Estate industry that I am in. I have also read about a lot developers like Donald Trump, but until know this is one of the most successful Minority Developers I have the pleasure of studying. The ability to stand fast with no legs to stand on is a lesson in itself. You have to believe you are adding value in any relationship for all to feel a certain equality.
His vision and tenacity to follow through, seems to be a trait a lot of Entrepreneurs lack. This is a real How To Book, most will try to cafeteria style it, and do it there way, bit it will not work. From the moment I finished reading it,I started trying to build political contacts. I will be giving my first campaign donation this year. I never understood the importance of who you know, not what it is that you know, until I read The Peebles Principles. I would just like to congratulate Mr. Pebbles on his massive success.
It seems as if Mr. Peebles is unstoppable know, I just recently read that he is constructing the most expensive Minority Owned hotel in Las Vegas as we speak. This just gives the average person that does not have a Harvard Degree the confidence that you can do it if you want it bad enough. In closing I would recommend this book to anyone that has ever wanted to pursue a career as a Real Estate Investor. It gives you a different path to the promised land.

Can this genius possibly have more fun?.......2007-08-01
Read this book. It will force you to completely rethink just how you can operate within the free-market business world. My once forgotten career dreams of yesteryear have been rediscovered and are now being fulfilled with a renewed vigor. Mr. Peebles has an astute business mind coupled with a tireless desire to succeed with his ethics intact.
Book Description
This practical, step-by-step guide to operating a small farm in the new millennium examines 20 alternative farming enterprises. Readers will learn how to target niche markets and sustain a farm's biological and economic health.
Customer Reviews:
Good advice for serious beginners.......2007-06-15
There are lots of books written about how to grow things, how to raise animals, organics, etc. However, this is one of few on the subject of small farming that actually puts the whole picture together in terms of creating/sustaining a business and a lifestyle. The author expects that the reader is serious about surviving and thriving from his/her farming activities and shares information specific to the "business" of farming in a sensitive and ethical manner. It shouldn't be a secret that the small farmer needs to take advantage of every asset on the property year round, in addition to wearing every hat in a small business: Planning, marketing, sales, accounting, production, maintnenance, networking, etc. Excellent general information and many specifics, too. Well worth the read if you are serious about learnting to farm for profit.
It's about business, the business of farming. .......2007-03-01
This book is about the business of farming. It is not about how to produce a specific crop or livestock. There are many other books out there that cover these subjects. Some people rated this book poorly because their expectations for the book conflicted with what the book's subject is.
If you want to know about the buying equipment, how many hours of your time and how much capital you'll need to expend on various livestock or crops and how much you can expect to profit by those efforts, this is the book that will help you.
A Wise Investment for the Inquisitive, Curious Beginner.......2004-03-21
First, let me begin by saying what this book is not. This book gives zero advice to practicing small or large farmers on how to turn a profit. This book is not a how-to guide for those starting out. Nor is it a step-by-step method on how to get rich by working the land. If that were the case, then every small farmer in America would have read the book and gotten wealthy, instead of banks and other creditors foreclosing on family farms and putting them on the auctioning block.
Now, let me elaborate on what this book really is. This book is a very polite warning by two very seasoned, jaded individuals who are aware of the escapist notions and romantic fantasies many people have about farming. They have been around long enough to have become intimately familiar with the Back to the Land Movement, a Return to Simplicity, and Environmental Sustainability/Sustainable Agriculture- aka The New Improved Agriculture. It took me a while to realize this (three readings in fact!) and understand the dangers associated with one pernicious stereotype about farming.
Many of us on the sidelines believe that anyone can farm, and all it takes is a willingness to work hard (the trite saying about hard-working ditch diggers getting rich comes readily to mind). When we think of the farmer, we often have one (malicious) stereotype in mind- that of the dumb country boy with a 'gee aw shucks' outlook on farming and life. Basically, we really do not think it takes brains in order to farm successfully. I mean, after all, you take some seeds, toss in a little fertilizer of your choice, water them and come back in a few months to collect your crop and get your pesos (almost literally)- just how hard could that be?
Well, speaking as someone who is thoroughly new to farming, never once has farmed, and is inquisitive about the practice of agriculture, after considerable investigation I can tell you the prospective reader that no matter how hard they work, dumb people will not be able to stay on the farm for long. We on the sidelines do not think farming is difficult because we do not think about the Practice of Farming and the Business of Farming. If your experience of farming up to this point is shopping at your local natural foods co-op, perusing the stalls at the local weekly farmer's market, or wandering the aisles at some trendy, eco-hip retailer like Whole Foods or Wilds Oats (who have skillfully co-opted environmentalism as a path to insane riches), and you are considering going into farming as a vocation, then I do not think you will hear the polite warning contained in this book. If you are someone stuck in a dead-end or high-paying but otherwise unfulfilling career (like this reviewer), and you are seeking an out, a means of escape (what we politely but laughingly call a 'transition'), then you just might catch the polite warning consistently stated throughout this book.
Farming attracts many people not because of its business or financial aspects but because of the lifestyle many people associate with farming. If you are an MD, then you are in the business of healthcare. Your business and your lifestyle are completely different. In fact, whether your business is highly successful or modestly successful, your lifestyle could be lavish, it could be modest, or it could be parsimonious- it's up to you and your personal preferences. If you don't like your current situation, from where you work, to who you work for (read HMOs) to your clientele base, you can make a change without changing your lifestyle- too much that is.
Now here is the polite warning: if you are drawn to farming because of the lifestyle, and you turn this lifestyle into a business, then it behooves you to make damn certain that your business can pay for itself, because after all, your business is your lifestyle and your lifestyle is your business. The lifestyle will not work out if the business end does not pay. In fact, the business end may place quite severe limitations on the lifestyle you can reasonably expect to achieve, which in many cases will be well below what you are currently accustomed to. Unlike a 9 to 5 gig with some godless multinational, you can not simply just pack up and leave (this assumes implicitly that the heartless .......... have not fired you in the latest round of restructurings), and if the business end does not work out, you lose not only your lifestyle, but also your home.
For me, the true heart of the book and the real message of the text were contained in the Foreword by Budd Kerr Jr and Part I- Getting Started. In terms of content, the book contains little on the techniques of farming, and has eleven chapters divided into four parts- Getting Started, Farming, Planning and Marketing, and Management, with a handy appendix chock full of useful resources on the Business and Practice of Farming. The text is specifically pitched at a level that almost anyone can understand, and there is a noticeable bias towards the environmentally minded reader.
That said, the true purpose of this book is to get you, the prospective reader who may be thinking of getting into farming, to start thinking about the Practice of Farming and the Business of Farming, all romanticism and eco-hip verbiage aside. This book is of no use to someone who is already farming, and in need of help. The best time to read this book is before you get into farming whole hog as they say down on the farm.
Even though it took me three passes to finally get the message, I am glad that I did read it before taking any action.
Read this book several times BEFORE you venture into farming, not during or after.
Where's the beef?.......2004-02-19
I kept reading and reading looking for the exciting practical information promised by all these reviews. Then the book ended. Then I looked back at the reviews to see what I'd missed that (mis)lead me to believe there was practical information in it. They use words like 'overview' to indicate that there ain't much in the way of real meat in this book. I can sum it up in one sentence: Find yourself a niche market locally and grow what they want. If you need details about producing the product, this is not the book you're looking for.
For extensive, detailed, practical information about making money by pasturing mixed species of livestock, look at books by Joel Salatin. But even he could still bring in more complementary planting for winter forage. Greg Judy has a detailed book about making money with livestock without owning the land or the livestock.
Being a Farmer does not mean living in Poverty.......2004-01-07
I enjoyed Mr. Macher book. His realistic examples and stories on how to get started have convinced me to leave writing software and become a business man who's products are farm products.
The appendicies are great with current information about where to get more information.
His true stories boxes let you know that he understands what beginging farms needed in the way of encouragement and information to help them make the decision to farm.
He is correct when he writes "to survive as a farmer you must have a market before you start to grow and you must provide a quality product with even better customer service."
Worth the money and a pleasant read for anyone thinking about starting a business or farming.

This book is a guide to the key elements of successful fund raising, explaining the profession's major principles, concepts, and techniques.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for everyone involved in fund raising.......1999-09-25
The late Henry Rosso, one of fund raising's all time great teachers and practitioners, gets to the heart and soul of fund raising as he clearly presents the basic techniques. His love for philanthropy and his respect and admiration for donors is infectious.
Very good. Inspiring and practical guide for set up........1999-05-26
Rosso and Associates have created a book to inspire those who find themselves in a relatively undefined fundraising position. The book provides a conceptual framework from which to view fundraising as, aside from the mission, the most vital aspect of a not-for-profit organisation. You can approach this book from an absolute beginner level or from an experienced fundraising background looking for a little inspiration and back-up. The book is, understandably, quite grounded in American law and culture so its direct application to other countries is limited.

The understanding of why any business or organization will prevail........2007-03-09
Absolutely Druckers best! This is one of three Books that are fundamentally important for existing in business. This is the understanding necessary for helping leaders, management and future leaders make decisions. This should be a text book for anyone starting a business, all business schools, all business decision makers,or anyone that wants(or has)to make decisions in any enterprise. You will BE better for reading this book. Take your time, because it is all here.
I fully concur: 1st book to present innovation & entrepreneurship as a purposeful & systematic discipline!.......2006-10-02
I am very gratified to note that this wonderful book is still around & is being re-released as a new print. I read it when it was first published in the mid-80s. I remember that I had reread it during the early 90's when I had just started my own consultancy business.
I fully concur that this book is the first book to present innovation & entrepreneurship as a purposeful & systematic discipline. The book concists of three major parts:
- Part I: The Practice of Innovation;
- Part II: The Practice of Entrepreneurship;
- Part III: Entrepreneurial Strategies;
According to the author, entrepreneurial strategies are as important as purposeful innovation & entrepreneurial management. Together, they make up innovation & entrepreneurship.
What I like most about the book is the author's clear definition & concise elaboration of innovation as a disciplined business practice. He makes a very clear distinction: "Business, because of its purpose, has just two functions, & only two: MARKETING & INNOVATION. Marketing & Innovation make money. Everything else is a cost."
Best of all, he also provides some general guidelines for identifying innovative opportunities.
As a matter of fact, in Part I of the book, he describes the seven sources for innovative opportunities. Each of these seven sources are systematically covered in a specific chapter. For all entrepreneur-wannabes out there, understanding these 'innovative secrets of success' alone is worth the price of the entire book.
The breakthrough book On Disruption.......2006-08-27
Drucker coined the term "entrepreneurial judo" in one of the final chapters of this book, back in 1984, to explain the unexpected success of new entrants that cracked mature markets by introducing lower quality products or services, often aimed at marginal market segments.
Companies like Sony, with the first transistor radio, or Citibank's German expansion or MCI's launch.
This proved to be the early catalyst for Clayton Christensen's detailed examination of disruptive innovation more than 10 years later.
As Drucker points out, the success could be summarized in the motto of a civil war general: "Hit them where they ain't."
Drucker's book, as all his works, is clearly grounded in customer-focused, down-to-earth views of business. He includes a helpful list of Do's and Dont's for innovation that any entrepreneur should know and embrace.
A must for any budding entrepreneur.......2006-05-27
Ok, so you want to start your own business but do not have a business degree? Don't know the rules of the game? Then do buy this book and read it thoroughly. I still use it as a guide in my little internet startup that I formed a few years ago. A must have for anyone with no business background but still wants to make it big :)
Maureen Hull - Review.......2005-09-09
Outstanding book and content. Has helped me make over $2 million dollars in my businesses. I was told to include that in the review. Anyway... We like to be positive, be successful. Maureen Hull.

OK but trendy and shallow.......2003-10-06
Good for a basic understanding and easy to read but tends to emphasize research and science less, and trendy, faddish aspecdts of group dynamics more. Still pretty well balanced overall though their choices in what to cover are sometimes odd, with important but not trendy issues dropped in favor of current fashion and popular jargon / instruments.

provides methods to assess uncertainties and intangibles.......2007-03-07
Feldman offers practical advice in the tricky task of valuing a firm that has no publicly traded stock. There are many intangibles. But the book gives methodologies to systematically assess in a rational manner what these might be.
Take trying to find the beta. How to do so for a private firm? The book clearly sets out the steps of - 1. estimating the beta for the firm's industry. 2. tweaking this for time lag effects. 3. change the beta to account for the firm's size. 4. ditto, but now for the firm's capital structure.
Granted, steps 2, 3 and 4 can still be quite involved. And you might well have to still do subjective assessments within each. But the overall procedure is at least conceptually clear.
The book has many other procedures that you should find useful.

Not everything you need to know for massage boards but a good start.......2007-09-21
Nice start for the budding massage enthusiast or short 500 hour program text. Only covers Western Modalities aka Swedish style massage. Very brief intro to anatomy and movement. Very little about pathology. On the plus side it is a very easy read and the break down of muscle attatchement and origins is very clear and clean. You could make flash cards out of the info on them! Nice. There is far too little information on the cultural variations interpretations of touch experience. For just one text get the Mosby's. But if you add Trail Guide to the Body and one solid book on Oriental medicine that includes meridians and theory and a good color book with lots of muscles in it, take a year of Qigong and find you can listen to a quiet cd without falling asleep - you will be ready to start massage school. Trust me, staying awake while listening to relaxing music is a skill!

Wonderful.......2004-06-09
This is the best book I've found on Amazon that has all a person needs to know about starting massage. There's information on table heights, contraindications, business practices and everything else. I would recommend this to anyone interested in taking a massage course, or starting in the profession.
Good reference for national board massage exam.......2003-05-21
I used this book for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodwork. It is useful as good knowledge source for the massage techniques parts of the exam. It is also listed as a reference by the National Certification Board of Massage and Bodywork for the NCETMB. I also used the following books which were very good:

Despite the rapid growth, the success of business incubators has been mixed at best. Growing New Ventures, Creating New Jobs provides sponsors, boards, and the management teams of business incubation programs with proven strategies for enhancing the creation and development of new ventures and ensuring the success of programs that support business growth and development. Business creation experts Jana B. Matthews and Mark P. Rice explain the three key principles of successful business incubation; the 10 best practices for starting, developing, and managing a business incubation program; ways to attract high-quality entrepreneurs; the litmus test to determine an incubator's feasibility; and many hands-on examples from the directors of some of the country's top business incubators. Incubators have helped to create more than 82,000 new jobs in communities throughout the United States, and they foster the entrepreneurial spirit that is the lifeblood of the economy. Growing New Ventures, Creating New Jobs gives business, university, and government leaders a blueprint incubator program for invigorating the regional economy.

Seattle, the corporate coffeehouse capitol of the world, is the setting for Beans, a smart fable about a real ten foot coffee counter with long lines in rain or shine. Using the plot device of a business crisis at the "El Espresso," Authors Yerkes and Decker spend time with owner Jack Hartman. They help him define success in terms of "the eye of intention."
Being successful in bad times means remembering how you got the business the first time. As the very insightful Jack reflects, the authors organize his approach with four P's: Passion (experience and sustain passion about work), People (create enduring staff relationships), Personal (building a community of regulars), and Product (sustaining product excellence). These "Ps" are prosaic in name only. They are used to illustrate nuanced connections. For example, the link between employee loyalty and customer loyalty and the synergy between an employee's pride in their product and their devotion to it.
While some readers may find the storyline contrived, the success and the charm of the El and its owner--both renamed to protect the regulars--provide engaging and stimulating ideas about how to nourish a business. --Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
Beans is the story of The El Espresso, a legend in its own time in Seattle and a coffee company that has prospered by intentionally staying small, inspiring fanatical customer loyalty in the process. Told over the span of a single day, it follows The El's founder, Jack Hartman, through a business crisis that will challenge him and make him clear on why he does what he does. Unsure of whether he has lost the passion needed to sustain his business, Jack hires a consultant who flies to Seattle to "help" him but in reality bears witness to the secrets of good business, whether it's a company of 20 employees or 20,000. In the process, Jack learns about "the Four Ps" and how applying these universal principles can reenergize his employees, his customers, and even himself.
Though fictionalized, this is a true story in the best sense of the word. It arrives at a time when people are yearning to return to honest ways of doing business—before corporate dominance, inflated executive salaries, accounting trickery, and outright greed became so much a part of our everyday business headlines. It is the story of how a pushcart David up against the corporate Goliaths succeeded by focusing on what is core to good business and a good life: honoring customers, trusting employees, building passion around a product, and turning an honest profit.

Repeat after Me: Be the Best You Can! Be the Best You Can!.......2006-09-12
I usually like business fables. This one was unfortunately well below par . . . and not because the business described was uninteresting. The business was very interesting.
But the book spent too much time going away from talking about the fable and into attempting to be an elementary class on how to run a very small business. I admit it. The unending repetition of the 4 P's (Passion, People, Personal and Product) got to me.
Is there anyone on the planet who doesn't know that good products sell better than less good ones? Are there any small business people who don't know that your people make a difference? Have you ever been annoyed if people gave you more personal service? Do you enjoy buying from passionate people?
If you know those things, you can skip this book. You've already passed this course.
I liked that the book was based on a real business where anyone would want to buy their coffee. I also liked that the advice was to give great service and products.
But aside from describing how they run their coffee business, this book was pretty boring and simplistic. For me the upside of the book was the description of peddling to work by bicycle trailed by cookies you've baked yourself and enjoying a half-hour ferry ride in between. That sounded very great indeed!
Beans.......2006-03-22
This is not a great book. It is short and sweet but general knowledge. It can serve as a great reminder but unless it is in the clearance bin don't bother.
OBVIOUS VALUE BECAUSE IT'S CONCISE.......2005-04-05
Although there are literally tens of business cases presented in short book if not parable form for popular audiences, BEANS, recommends itself as one of the best ones by virtue of its usefulness for both managers and employees.
It tells a compelling story that presents real world challenges and realistic solutions. It presents a scale of business almost everyone should be able to relate to since it isn't about the sometimes otherworldly power plays the Captains of Industry like to write about. For the rest of us, the human-sized, daily dilemmas of making one's vision work while surviving to make them work, is sensibly and warmly expressed in BEANS.
BEANS is the kind of book that could pay for itself, if a saavy entrepreneur who resonates with its commonsense, promoted its message in their own enterprise.
Worthless.......2005-01-10
This book is so poorly written it is laughable. This is a fable for yuppies who are fascinated by Seattle and expensive coffee drinks. The points it tries to make are so obvious (treat customers well, etc) that anyone who still needs to learn them has no place in the business world.
The author keeps inserting street names and places in Seattle as if to say "I know Seattle, isn't that cool?", but the writing is so bad and the points so obvious it could be condensed to a three or four page pamphlet.
I read the author's bio, and apart from working at Amazon (that's in Seattle!) he does not appear to have any real world experience. This is a bad book written by two "consultants" looking to cash in on the self help business book boom.
Leaf through it in a book store sometime and you will see what I mean.
Utter crap. Don't waste your money.
profound principles.......2004-08-27
A short easy to read book with profound principles. The ideas are common sense, but achieving the correct mix and right balance may be difficult to implement.
Moreover, I like the fact that this book has a "discussion forum" via the internet. A useful read for people studying marketing / management.
On second thought, a MUST read for all (employers + employees) on how to improve the enjoyability of their working lives!

Customer Reviews:
Great Inspiration for Anyone.......2007-01-04
It's been a couple months since I read this book, but one thing I remember from it was a quote from Melaleuca's Frank Vandersloot--it went something like "The magic...is in helping others achieve their goals, not in trying to reach our own goals." I think that in itself is a fantastic goal to have and I know that we can all agree now that the world would be a lot different if more people internalized this perspective.
I didn't know what to expect of this book and I'm so glad I read it now (it just takes one sitting). While this book does have parts that are targeted to specific audiences, this book is a required quick read for anyone who is thinking of starting their own business for extra income or anyone willing to do what it takes to move to a higher level in life. It was less than $10 and much more inspiring than books I've read for 3 times the cost.
informative and inspiring.......2001-06-03
The history and background helped me understand that so much is acheivable with the right amount of perserverance. I read this cover to cover in three sessions. Frank's committment to success through the mission statement "Enhancing the lives of those we touch, by helping people reach their goals" is very inspirational. Thank you so much!
A good read for those involved in the company.......2000-03-23
If you are involved in the Melaleuca company as either a customer or a marketing executive, you should take a look as this book. It is a lot of rah-rah about the company and it's policies, but I felt good about knowing how the company was formed and how it works.
It would be good for those getting involved to read it, and get a lot of information about the company that you might not know.
