Book Description

What does it take to turn ideas into action? What are the elements of a perfect pitch? How do you win the war for talent? How do you establish a brand without bucks? These are some of the issues everyone faces when starting or revitalizing any undertaking, and Guy Kawasaki, former marketing maven of Apple Computer, provides the answers.

The Art of the Start will give you the essential steps to launch great products, services, and companies—whether you are dreaming of starting the next Microsoft or a not-for-profit that's going to change the world. It also shows managers how to unleash entrepreneurial thinking at established companies, helping them foster the pluck and creativity that their businesses need to stay ahead of the pack. Kawasaki provides readers with GIST—Great Ideas for Starting Things—including his field-tested insider's techniques for bootstrapping, branding, networking, recruiting, pitching, rainmaking, and, most important in this fickle consumer climate, building buzz.

At Apple, Kawasaki helped turn ordinary customers into fanatics. As founder and CEO of Garage Technology Ventures, he has tested his iconoclastic ideas on real- world start- ups. And as an irrepressible columnist for Forbes, he has honed his best thinking about The Art of the Start.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the most useful book I've ever read.......2007-10-24

This is the most practical and inspirational business book I've ever read. It engages the reader with intuitively appealing and effective ways to create a meaningful and profitable venture. It's like having the world's best business coach on your team. Transforms the business planning process into an enjoyable and effective process.

4 out of 5 stars Good, basic.......2007-10-20

This book covers the process of starting a business and raising money. Good basic tips and lots of the boostrapper philosophy. I love Guy's work.

5 out of 5 stars The Art of the start.......2007-10-06

This book is great for getting anything started. Very easy to read and to the point. Anyone can use this book to start anything. Details to look for. I also liked that I could read the first chapter on line before purchasing it.

4 out of 5 stars Great check-list for anyone starting a company........2007-09-07

A great checklist and lots of advice for anyone thinking of starting a company.

Nothing revolutionary, perhaps nothing you wouldn't have thought of yourself, but there is great value in having a well thought-out, complete, list like this.

Only 4 stars because the book seems biased towards venture-funded companies.

5 out of 5 stars The Art of Living.......2007-08-30

Written like he was delivering a speech, Guy Kawasaki has made this an enjoyable and interesting read. All the time I was turning the pages, I kept feeling that much of what he wrote applied to life, and not just starting a business. When I got to the final chapter, "The Art of Being a Mensch", I discovered why I had gotten that feeling - much of Kawasaki's business approach emanates from his way of being in life. Read it for thoughts on how to live; read it for its humor, read it for advice - but do read it! Dennis DeWilde, Author of The Performance Connection.

5 out of 5 stars An accessible, all-around guide to setting up a business.......2003-08-30

Steven Rogers, a professor at the Kellogg School of Management, has put together a comprehensive handbook for aspiring entrepreneurs. Written in plain language that does not assume prior knowledge of business or economics, this guide covers all the major topics that entrepreneurs face in setting up and managing a business: writing up a business plan, compiling and understanding financial statements, making a company profitable, valuing a company, and raising money.

On the one hand, Professor Rogers has written a reference book that assembles much of the information that people intuitively know. In that sense, the guide can be useful to people who want to make sure they are "not forgetting something." On the other hand, though, this guide tackles many issues that quite a few entrepreneurs look down upon: for example, accounting. Professor Rogers not only explains how entrepreneurs should handle the mundane aspects of business like accounting, but also elucidates why entrepreneurs should pay attention to those aspects at all. In doing so, he alerts entrepreneurs about the kind of problems they may face and recommends action to prevent them.

Professor Rogers has compiled anecdotes, business quotations, industry data, and mathematical formulae (which he explains in detail), to write an accessible guide for aspiring business owners. This balance, between serious and humorous, and fact and theory makes the book both fun to read and very useful -- a definite read for those daunted by the prospect of starting their own business.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive guide to entrepreneurship.......2002-11-18

The thousands of budding entrepreneurs in the world share many common pitfalls. Among them is the need for adequate information regarding financing their dreams and a workable, usable, and meaningful plan of action. This book, by one of the country's leading professors of entrepreneurship, and others, is the definitive guide to mapping a viable and long-term plan of action for entrepreneurial success.

How to attract the venture capital needed to grow any business
Venture Capital teaches entrepreneurs and small business owners everything they need to know about finding the venture capital they need to grow their businesses. Based, in large part, upon in-depth interviews with major players in the venture capital arena--including money managers as well as entrepreneurs who have dealt with them successfully--it provides powerful pointers on how to make a business attractive to venture capitalists, how to protect yourself in negotiating an agreement, how to manage a relationship with venture capitalists once a deal is signed, and much more. Perhaps most importantly, the reader learns what makes venture capitalists tick and sees things through a venture capitalist's eyes.
Joel Cardis, Esq. (Blue Bell, PA), consults both Fortune 500 companies and small businesses on an array of venture and start-up issues. Hildy Richelson, PhD (Scarsdale, NY), is President of the Scarsdale Investment Group, Ltd.

2 out of 5 stars Comes Up Short.......2006-08-02

Sadly, this book is similar to most on venture capital in that it is based on interviews of VCs. The weakness behind this approach is that it provides unorganized content that lacks depth and utility. In short, while it doesprovide some important insight, these insights are neither unique or critical and can be found in other books that provide a much better resource to the entrepreneur.

5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2002-04-02

Finally! A practical, hands-on guide to raising venture capital. This step-by-step handbook gives an entrepreneur a clear, real-world roadmap to the fundraising process. I only wish I had a book like this when I started my company.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to start your own business.......2007-01-11

It is a complete guide to start your own business, specially when you are first time. It covers all the steps in the process from finding out what kind of business to complete a real business plan. It also analyse buying an existing business or a franchise. Excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for the New Entrepreneur.......2006-11-20

This book is a great starting point for the first-time entrepreneur; it is informative and motivating for one who has toyed with the idea of starting a business, but lacks the experience to know where to begin in his journey. Dr. Harper helps the reader to re-evaluate his or her plans to avoid failure in the future.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good intro to starting a business.......2005-12-27

This book is a good summary of the more technical aspects of starting a business. It doesn't dig into economics or financial issues too deeply so just reading this book isn't going to make you an expert. But, I think the general steps to starting a business are laid-out pretty well and that this book has a lot of value for someone looking for direction. One thing I would have liked to see in this book was a concise summary of all the steps involved so that when it is time to refer back to this book after reading it, you're not digging through the details and examples.

3 out of 5 stars So far it has been very informational........2005-09-11

I have not read the whole book yet but from what I have read it has been very informational. There are a lot of good tips and things that I had not even thought about. I think I got what I paid for.

5 out of 5 stars Eye Opening!.......2002-11-21

I would highly recommend picking up this book to anyone contemplating opening a small business or maybe struggling with an existing one. It is an easy read and reminds you of the common pitfalls, at the same time motivating for success...

According to Robert J. Robinson and Mark van Osnabrugge, so-called business angels--those generally unheralded private investors who usually specialize in high-growth fields and often involve themselves directly in the endeavors they fund--now provide 30 to 40 times more financing each year than their more famous counterparts, venture capitalists. In Angel Investing, Robinson and Van Osnabrugge use personal interviews, anecdotal evidence, and more than 300 research studies to show exactly who these financiers are, how they operate, and where they can be found. Robinson, an international management consultant, and Van Osnabrugge, an associate professor at Harvard Business School, also compare various financing options, explain precisely how angels and venture capitalists function differently, describe proven ways to attract them, and provide relevant resources. "The vast size and power of the business angel market in the United States is not well understood but is of incredible importance to our entrepreneurial sector and, indirectly, to maintaining our economic growth and standard of living," the authors write. They pack their book accordingly with valuable information for serious fund-seekers who have exhausted the traditional three F's (founder, family, and friends), as well as those who are considering entrepreneurial investments of their own. --Howard Rothman

Book Description

They deliver more capital to entrepreneurs than any other source. And they often receive an incredible return on their investments. They're angel investors, some of the most important--and least understood--players in business today. The United States has close to three million angels, whose investments in startups exceed $60 billion per year. Some of our most successful companies were funded by angels--companies like Ford, AOL, and Amazon.com. But until now, little has been written about these angels, due in part to their preference for anonymity. Angel Investors provides an inside look at who these angels are and how they operate. It also shows would-be angels and entrepreneurs how best to find each other.

5 out of 5 stars more than a Guide.......2003-11-11

I am the Founder & CEO of a business that within the next 8 to 12 months was seeking to raise between $2M and $5M to fund our expansion. I always thought of going straight to Venture Capital firms or Private Equity divisons of Invmt Banks that I have already been in touch with. This book, Angel Investing, was a truly priceless read to me. The education delivered by authors has helped me re-strategize my approach to inviting external investors and also the amount that I should try to raise and the schedule of funds. What I thought was most helpful was the detailed comparisons between Angel Investors and Venture Capitalist, as well as understanding the psychology behind their thinking and how an entrepreneur seeking outside funds should try to prepare every aspect of their presentation (themselves, their product and overall business plan). The book has given me tools to have most questions covered and more importantly has prepared me to become an angel myself in the years ahead.

4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2002-10-29

This book starts off slowly but when it gets rolling it is very helpful ,giving good infromation where and when you need it.

5 out of 5 stars Good guide for entrepreneurs who need funding.......2002-08-28

If you are planning to go after Angel funding, this book is a must-read. The book contains interviews with a broad spectrum of Angels, who discuss their investment experience, the thinking they go through, and key things they look for, when evaluating an opportunity. This book would serve as an excellent reference for anyone preparing to be in front of Angels.

5 out of 5 stars Good Overview of Angel Investing.......2002-07-22

"Angel Investing" by Mark Van Osnabrugge and Robert J. Robinson gives useful information about angel investors and venture capitalists.

Van Osnabrugge and Robinson estimate that angel investors--wealthy individuals who invest their own money into start-up companies--invest three to five times more money than venture capitalists and back thirty to forty times more ventures, making angel investors the primary source of external capital for entrepreneurs.

But, how do you meet and present your business idea to an angel investor? What factors do angel investors give the most weight to when debating whether or not to fund a venture? How do angel investors differ from venture capitalists when valuing a start-up company?

"Angel Investing" answers these questions and many more. It is stuffed with studies, interviews, and solid advice. "Angel Investing" can be divided into three main categories:

* General background about angel investors and venture capitalists and their relationship and importance to business and the economy.

* Practical advice for entrepreneurs seeking start-up funds from angel investors or venture capitalists.

* Practical advice for individuals considering becoming angel investors and making investments in small companies.

Each topic in "Angel Investing" is well documented. It's a rather formal book, actually. Robinson is a professor at the Harvard Business School and Van Osnabrugge is a former fellow of the Harvard Business School.

I found the section about successful angel investment deals a bit too rich for my taste. For example, we learn that one angel investor who backed amazon.com got a 260 times return on his initial investment of $100,000 making him $26 million. Another angel who invested in the Body Shop received 10,500 times his initial investment. As a new angel investor, don't get overly excited about the prospects! Remember, many angel investments fail dismally. As the authors point out, you must only invest money you can afford to lose!

If you are already a financially successful entrepreneur who considers becoming an angel investor, you might want to read "Angel Investing" to help improve the chances of making successful angel investments. However, the book is not a complete analysis of the due diligence process.

And, of course, from an entrepreneur's standpoint, reading a book won't automatically put you in contact with serious angel investors, and much of the real work in financing a new venture involves finding personal contacts to introduce you to appropriate angel investors. Van Osnabrugge and Robinson note that most funded ventures involve personal introductions.

Maybe, if you're ready to invest $50,000 per company or more (and ready to lose $50,000 or more per investment!), you're tired of investing in public companies (with mystic accounting and lack of reportability to the investor), and you want to add value to your investment by contributing information and contacts to your investment, this might be a good book to help get you started. On the downside, you'll probably have no diversification and poor liquidity with angel investments.

The most important tip from "Angel Investing": Do adequate research before investing in a company. And, it's best if you know the industry and know business.

Peter Hupalo, Author of "Thinking Like An Entrepreneur."

5 out of 5 stars Place this in your shopping cart now!.......2002-05-31

This book is one of THE BEST books on this subject matter that I have read in recent years. Having been in the venture capital industry for many years I was very interested to read what van Osnabrugge and Robinson had to say. I'll be the first to admit that I was a bit skeptical because the book was written by academics. However, after a careful read it became clear that these authors have done their homework and know what they are talking about. This book is an enjoyable read that has some of the most useful information I have found to date. I urge anyone interested in entrepreneurship and investing to read this book. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Entrepreneur Magazine's Ultimate Small Business Marketing Guide.......2007-07-17

Ultimate Small Business Marketing Guide boasts over 1500 marketing tips and tricks. This helpful information is divided into sections related to everything from research and planning through dealing with employees and improving customer service to advertising and creative selling. Each tip is also labelled with symbols that indicate approximately how much money it would take to implement this plan, if you can do the work yourself, if professional services are available in this particular area, as well as additional online or print resources that may help in this regard.

This book is thick and quite complete with ideas that are explained in good detail. The information is extremely well organized and easy to understand, flowing naturally from planning through sales. There are also lots of good checklists and surveys to help keep the entrepreneur organized and focused. Most of the information provided focuses on brick and mortar businesses. Nonetheless, a good deal of these notions can easily be modified for virtually any business brick and mortar or online.

4 out of 5 stars Plenty of Good Ideas.......2006-03-10

This book is not a cover-to-cover book about marketing theory, but rather a large series of examples that cover many marketing categories and topics. While I can't say I use a lot of these ideas everyday, many are good and for me, the best benefit is reading a wide variety of ideas in general. Marketing is more creativity than science in my opinion (once you identify a real market with some measure of certainty), so reading such a varied collection gets my mind thinking in new directions. That alone made the book worth it for my money. YMMV.

5 out of 5 stars Sales 101,201,301,401.......2006-03-04

Very comprehensive from a topic standpoint! May not completely discuss a topic, but it covers them all. It also provides a tremendous amount of great ideas, which was what I purchased the book for.

4 out of 5 stars Great source of marketing ideas for any organization!.......2006-02-24

I originally checked out a copy of this book from my local library. However after reading it cover to cover, I wanted to purchase my own copy. The author comes up with some really good and practical marketing ideas. I used some of the ideas in the book to come up with a couple of marketing pieces for the local non-profit organization that I am currently volunteering with. The book does a good job of telling the reader what to do, but it falls a little short in telling how to do it. Overall, it is a good book to have in my business library.

Book Description

Every year, hundreds of thousands of students in the U.S. enter college totally clueless as to their choice of a major, and even less sure about what they will do with the rest of their lives. But for a growing number of students, the financial pressures of college are far more taxing than the academic rigors of campus life. As a result, many students rely heavily on financial aid, loans, part-time jobs, strict budgets, and whatever money their parents can afford to send them. Many students take dead-end jobs with no relevance to their college programs, while others even work on a full-time basis—sacrificing grades for dollars—and unwittingly setting themselves up to become college drop-outs.

However, students don’t have to suffer through a penniless college existence, nor must they wait until after graduation to find a career and make money. Instead, they can generate income by launching their own businesses while on campus, taking advantage of the period in their lives during which any number of once-in-a-lifetime perks and resources are readily available to them. The Campus CEO walks any would-be entrepreneur through all the necessary steps to launching a profitable, campus-based business, while simultaneously achieving academic success. Regardless of major, background, or area of interest, readers of The Campus CEO will learn how to turn their academic and professional dreams into reality.

Features:

How to develop a successful business plan, secure funding, maintain a healthy balance between work and school, and manage a successful endeavor How and where to find the many perks hidden away on college campuses How to achieve both entrepreneurial and academic success

5 out of 5 stars inspiring and good introduction to entrepreneurship.......2007-07-16

I found this book to be a relatively fast and easy read. First and foremost, Pinkett does a great job of instilling entreprenurial confidence in his student readers. Beyond that, the author ties in his own past experiences well with each chapter. This real world dialog greatly aids in the books overall credibility. While the book does not provide all answers, it does not attempt to. Pinkett gives just enough information to get the reader's wheels turning. From there, the entrepreneur within is supposed to take over. While the contents of the book apply to all business enterprises, the author does a good job of really hammering home the unique opportunities young student entrepreneurs hold (particularly in the later chapters). For aspiring campus start-ups, I would recommend a combination of both Campus CEO and a more comprehensive entreprenurial MBA style of book.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for students.......2007-07-08

This book is FABULOUS! I am just starting my first business and this book is full of suggestions and strategies on how to make your business a success. He speaks a lot about his own venture, which he started in college, and it got to be the multi-million dollar business it is today. I think the best part about the book is that he gives links and references on where you can put some of his suggestions into action, like finding a mentor, or applying for grants. Of course the book does give info specifcally for students, ie. expanding your business by leveraging one's professors. Overall, the book was great, highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs.......2007-05-29

As an entrepreneur and teacher of entrepreneurship at the college level, I'm constantly on the lookout for quality materials for students. This book is exceptional. First, it's well written and easy to follow. Second, it's full of practical advice from someone who clearly has an intuitive understanding of the subject matter, as well as the experience of having done it himself. Finally, as noted by other reviewers, Dr. Pinkett's book is inspirational. Campus CEO is a winner and well worth the investment.

5 out of 5 stars Not Just for Students!.......2007-05-02

It's been 13 years since I graduated college - so I'm definitely past the typical "Campus CEO" age - still, Dr. Pinkett's book taught me so much. I've had a small, side business in addition to my full-time job for almost a decade, however I've never really taken the time to write a full business plan, research how to obtain investors or other funding, hire other employees, etc.
"Campus CEO" has taught me about all of those things, and more.
One of the greatest things about "Campus CEO" is its user-friendly approach and candid, conversational tone. I bought an extra copy to share with my children and recommend others do the same. Dr. Pinkett's book is inspiring and a must-read for anyone - not just those on campus - interested in learning more about starting a business.

5 out of 5 stars Presentation is awesome!.......2007-04-23

This book reads more like a cross between a guide and an inspiration story. Dr. Pickett, kudos to you. This book will inspire not only college students, but anyone with aspirations or thoughts of being an entrepreneur.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good book on incorporating your business.......2003-12-01

How to Incorporate is an excellent book to show the average guy how to incorporate. It is an easy read and packed with good information.

Some other books you will want to read are Form Your Own Corporation and Launch a Business In Any State by J.W. Dicks, Inc. Yourself by Judith McQuown and Incorporating Your Business for Dummies by The Company Corporation. For more information on S-Corporations, How To Form A S-Corporation by Robert Cooke is the best book that I have found and the one most recommended by successfult business people.

4 out of 5 stars Technical and Well Rounded.......2001-03-16

This book is basically a textbook, as it contains a lot of the details that are common to incorporation in any state. While the authors have stayed general enough to remain in an interstate appeal, they have still covered almost every legal aspect of incorporating, WITHOUT giving advice as to what you should do. Also covered are: sole proprietorships and limited liability coporations/partnerships and more. Good buy if you want a good cursory understanding of business vehicles. I recommend it. Please vote if this did help you.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent addition to any entrepreneurýs library.......2000-07-06

This book is excellent! I have a Ph.D. and an MBA and have taken a lot of courses and read lots of books, business and otherwise. This text summarizes a lot of important information into a small book. This is not for simpletons, rather it gives important information for anyone wishing to incorporate.

4 out of 5 stars Covers important topics, a little confusingly written.......1999-04-15

It's really helpful in that it covers a bunch of the basic points. Ironically, I wish it focused on the tax implications of losses (to be expected in startups) as much profits :). I also found some of the writing confusing -- like in covering LLCs, it compares some facets of them to other corporate before really explaining how they work. But I liked the book, thinking it basically helps me have a more informed conversation with a lawyer, which I think is essential (since regulations change so fast, and can be state-specific).

4 out of 5 stars Gave me some basic ideas on incorporating our small business.......1997-06-04

It answered a lot of questions I had about incorporating our small business. However, it would be an even better book had there been a chapter dedicated to what can be written off along with what percentage of the total cost or value of things. This always seems to be a gray area. Overall, it was a very informative book

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice Guide for Beginners.......2007-06-16

The author writes a nice overview of the entrepreneurial process. It's basically for novices but it does a good job for this audience. The only problem I have with this book is that it is too basic and is therefore non-unique because it is so low-level. Regardless, I must say that for the right audience, it does a fine job over giving the big picture.

If you are advanced or aspire to become advanced, I would recommend "The Startup Company Bible for Entrepreneurs" but only for high-tech entrepreneurs. Even this author has recommended it.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Entrepreneurs.......2007-05-14

Steven gives great illustrations to drive home his insightful advice for entrepreneurs. As he's "been there, done that," we can take his advice to heart in the hopes of becoming a success like him!

5 out of 5 stars Exellent Book.......2007-05-11

Great book for getting ready to open a new business. Would refer to anyone thinking about opening a business.

5 out of 5 stars Brief and to the point.......2007-04-27

This is a delightful little book that contains a wealth of useful and helpful information and ideas on starting a small business and ensuring that it is viable and succesful. The book is well written and easy to follow and interesting to read.

This is a must read for entrepreneurs, particularly budding ones as the information the book provides is very practical and can help you avoid making costly errors. The book covers a wide range of topics including the start-up process, marketing the business on a small budget, cash-flow forecasting, among other things.

The book is an excellent companion for the entrepreneur that is well worth having.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable advice for the budding entrepreneur.......2007-03-04

This book does a terrific job of presenting some of the most important issues entrepreneurs face when embarking on new ventures, touching on topics such as the business plan, funding, team building, and cash flows. Using simple, yet stunningly accurate models of the entrepreneurial process, Steven Gold distills complex subjects into simple, practical, take-away messages. The classification of entrepreneurial personalities (professionals, pragmatists, and inventors) is something I think we can all relate to. I find the metaphor which compares building a new company to making "stone soup" equally compelling. There are countless books out there for budding entrepreneurs, but this one is no fluff. It gets right down to the nuts and bolts so you can concentrate on your business.
