Book Description
This comprehensive and balanced look at literacy practice has long been one of the most popular reading methods books available. It begins by introducing seven principles for comprehensive reading instruction, and then explains the theoretical foundations of teaching reading. Part I builds on those foundations with specific methods in Part II, and then in Part III it describes how to create a variety of learning centers, and how to plan developmentally appropriate reading curriculum for students in both K-3 and 4-8 classrooms. Chapters 12 and 13 provide a continuum of knowledge by describing classroom organization and curriculum for grades 4-6 and 6-8.. For teachers and future elementary school teachers of reading.

The process of comprehending text.......2004-11-15
Reutzel and Cooter, Jr. discusses the process of comprehending text in four stages. It is based on the schema theory. The first stage is searching. By this, they mean that in the very beginning, the reader is trying to search for the meaning of the text by looking and searching at the given text or print. By searching the text, the reader is using their schemata to help them understand what the text is trying to tell them. The second stage is applying. Applying is when the reader uses what they already know from the first stage, searching, to understand the text. The third stage is selecting and evaluating. In this stage, the reader looks at the information they already know and starts to evaluate the information by either retaining or discarding the information. It is in this step, that the reader is trying to decide which information is important for him/her to remember. The last stage is composing. The reader is making up a new meaning for the text that he/she just read by using what he already knows from all the previous stages. The new meaning is a replica of what he/she just read, but in their own words. These four stages, as Reutzel and Cooter, Jr. illustrate it, is a cyclical process. By this they mean that it is a circular process, where the student needs to be continually Applying, Searching, Selecting and Evaluating and then Composing.
Reutzel and Cooter, Jr. also discusses the four major difficulties a student may have in comprehension. The first difficulty a student may have is not having the prior knowledge or schema about the given text. Because of the lack of prior knowledge, the student will not be able to understand what the text is trying to convey. Thus, not being able to comprehend the text. The next difficulty a student may encounter is having the prior knowledge and schema about the text, but the author does not give enough information or clues for the student to establish or decide on a given schema that he/she already has. Third, the student may have selected a schema ahead of time only to find out that it doesn't make sense as they read the text. And lastly, the student's cultural experiences greatly affect how he/she chooses a schema to understand the text. This may lead to "an understanding of the text but a misunderstanding of the author"
Teaching Children To Read: From Basals to Books.......2002-03-19
I found this book very useful in helping me pass the Excelsior / Regents College Exam. Also useful was Literacy by Cooper. Both are available along with Regents groups of reading forsale under jring 47 - used for 49. I am selling all three together. I studied these three books and did very well on the test - just last month.
A wonderfully practical reading/literacy text for teachers........1996-12-12
Teaching Children to Read is the finest textbook for teachers of children to come along in many years. It includes numerous practical suggestions for teaching reading and writing, while also helping one understand the basic theory and principles behind quality teaching. A must read for teachers of children from grades 1 through 8

The Design Puzzle: Putting the Pieces Together
Bobbie Schwartz
Manufacturer: Self
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Paperback
ASIN: 0971631719 |
Book Description
This book is a collection of essays written from thirty-five years of experience by a gardener/designer. The first section is about the principles of landscape design and how they can be manipulated with the elements of color, line, form and texture.
The second section discusses design tools such as the use of bulbs and herbs to prolong and vary color and texture in the garden, encouragement of butterfly visitors with appropriate planting, the use of stone to make new gardens look old, the use of containers and the use and placement of ornament.
The third sections focuses on plant material: new cultivars of well-known genera; ornnamental grasses; perennials to use for long bloom, low maintenance; as hedges and as edgers; foliage; and see-through plants. The notion of maintenance is also discussed.
Section four emphasizes site conditions and which plants will work well in the sunny wet garden, the sunny dry garden and the shady garden. The fall garden, frequently neglected, is highlighted with discussions of flowers, seedheads and foliage while the winter garden hones in on the "bones" of the garden, plant material and lighting.

The Girl's Guide to Loving Yourself: A Book Abot Falling in Love With the One Person Who Matters Most..You
ASIN: 0883966689 |
Book Description
THE SCENARIO: We will call them Boy and Girl, because the pain, the heartache, the insanity, and the ultimate survival (believe it or not) ARE universal.
Boy breaks up with Girl. Girl is very sad. Boy is sad that Girl is sad, but not that sad. Girl contemplates hibernation, the possible move to another country, pitching a tent outside his house, and calling his mother to have her intervene. In the mass of this confusion, somewhere in between the words "It's not you, it's me..." and "I'd really like to still be friends...," all the options seem sane to Girl. To Boy... not so much.
THE SOLUTION: Girl's life has changed drastically. She has taken on the role of a single female, and though this idea seems frightening at first, with the help of THE BREAKUP BOOK, Girl will soon be on her way to a new beginning.
This book offers the reassurance of an old friend, the consolation of a bowl of chocolate fudge swirl, and the comfort of flannel pajamas, all in one package. From the very first moments of shock to the final stages of acceptance, Girl will experience the advice and guidance needed to get on with her life. And in the end, Girl will find herself single and loving it -- a lone goddess in complete control of her kingdom. She will have no one to thank but Boy for breaking her heart and giving her the chance to put the pieces back together... better than before.

A big help........2003-01-08
My mom gave me this book after I broke up with my boyfriend. At first I didn't want to read it -- I didn't feel like taking any advice at the time -- but she kept asking me if I'd liked it. I finally read it and am so glad I did! It got me laughing again and looking past all that I was going through. The author is really funny, and you can tell she is giving advice from her heart, which is so helpful when you need someone to relate to. I'd recommend this book to anyone who needs to get back on track after a breakup.
Breaking up is hard to do...NOT.......2003-01-08
This book really helped me through a ridiculous rough spot in my life. You wouldn't think a tiny little book could do that...but the advice is priceless and empowering. Frickin' amazing. I've lent it to all my chicas...like twice. As long as there are stoopid boyz...i am keeping this book around...so i guess i am like keeping it foreva!
thank you diane..........2003-01-08
i am in high school. when my boyfriend of three years broke up with me a few months ago i was devestated. i thought my world was over. i felt like a part of me was empty and dead. my mom bought me this book (and a lot of ice cream)...and somehow now i feel better. everyone kept giving me advice, but it wasn't working. the fact that there is a book out there like this is wonderful. it really helped me a lot. things like this take a while and i am not completely over it, but soon i will be.
laughter and tears all the way.......2002-12-20
My best friend sent this book to me when my ex and I broke up. It was exactly what I needed to hear. I laughed, I cried. I felt so empowered and ready to move on with my life. I recommend this book to anyone experiencing a broken heart. It was a light and great read, and I really enjoyed it.
if you are a girl...........2002-12-20
if you are a girl you will really appreciate this book. it was given to me right after my boyfriend of 3 years decided to dump me. it made me laugh when i felt like crying. such a sweet gift to give to someone when you know they are going through a hard time.

What has 16 divisions, unlimited pieces, becomes more wonderful the longer you work on it, and isn't finished until the day you die?
Your Life Puzzle!
We're all Life Puzzles under construction. And while our Life Puzzles are all made of the same 16 primary sections, the many different pieces that each of us put into our Life Puzzle makes each and every one of us unique.
Unfortunately, few of us have been taught how to create a healthy Life Puzzle, but all that can change with "Life Puzzle; Putting the pieces together."
Learn to stop puzzle jamming! Most of us were raised to believe we should have ourselves together by the age of 21. That's why we rush our lives and "jam" pieces together until we wake up one day to discover that were living a life we don't want to be a part of anymore.
"Life Puzzle; Putting the pieces together" shows everyone how to "unjam" and start building a Life Puzzle worth living in, while for others it will show how to avoid getting into puzzle jamming in the first place!
Avoid the quick fix! Learn to make your Life Puzzle while discovering the joy of creating yourself; piece by piece, with knowledge and fun.
Customer Reviews:
Life Changing!.......2003-03-28
I found this to be a book that is changing the way I look at and live my life! Just as the book points out, I was living my life in a reactive, passive, status quo existence. Kramer took me from this, to a place where I (pro)actively make choices of how I live my life made up of 16 life-puzzle pieces ... nutrition, thinking, sexuality, community and environment, play and recreation, etc. The book is a friendly, upbeat read, not at all complex ... but profoundly insightful once you 'get it'.
Using this book was a puzzle!.......1999-10-24
I was very disappointed after buying this book. Author Kramer has "patched" together her view of making life fit...but in a harried fashion which does not lead to "action" for the average reader. On page 7 she admits that only HALF of the puzzle pieces will be covered in this book!!! And of those pieces covered there is sketchy coverage at best. Nutrition has 54 pages devoted to it, while WORK has 12 pages and Finances only around 10 pages!!! She also gives an incomplete explanation of the Myers-Briggs personaility test, which should be administered by a professional anyway. Plus, there are many TYPOS throughout the book. Good idea for a book, poor execution.
Ground breaking! She should be on Oprah!.......1999-09-15
This book breaks new ground in balancing your life! We ARE all brought to life with our own puzzle....and no instruction guide on how to build a complete, balanced life. Ann's book explains how to fix your life such that you take SELF Responsibility and choose to fit your life puzzle together--rather than how we all usually jam the pieces in and hope for the best. A MUST READ!

Encyclopedic and full of information.......2001-12-26
Covers the full spectrum of component-based software engineering, from the basics to legal aspects. Contains one of the most authoritative collections of essays and whitepapers on the subject between two covers. I have used this book as a basis for component-based development, and have also used it as the foundation for a SQA initiative because the material also addresses quality. Many of the essays support a software reuse strategy, which is an added bonus. Another use of this outstanding book is as a resource for in-house training in many aspects of software engineering outside of the component-based domain. It's that comprehensive and complete. I recommend using this book with Successful Software Development as the two primary references in mature development organizations.
A definitive reference on the subject.......2001-09-11
This 818 page collection of 42 papers and articles is a definitive work on component-based software engineering. Regardless of your area(s) of interest, there is probably a chapter that addresses it. More importantly, each chapter is written by a top expert in their subspecialty.
Instead of giving a chapter-by-chapter description, I am going to cover the chapters that I found useful. To begin, Part II, chapters 1 through 3 gave me a quick primer in software components and highlighted the need to think in a different frame when dealing with component-based development. If you are new to CBSW then the 48 pages devoted to the basics are worthwhile reading.
Part II's five chapters on making a business and technical case for components is outstanding and the authors cover every facet. I found Part III, which covers software engineering practices, particularly useful. The value to me was the status of CBSW engineering on a global scale because I am currently providing consulting services to an India-based company that specializes in components. For this reason I also found Part IV's eight chapters on managing component-based software systems especially valuable.
The real eye-opener [for me], however, was in Part VIII, which devotes four interesting chapters on aspects of legal and regulatory issues as they related to software development as a discipline, and component-based software engineering specifically. In particular, chapter 38 on software component standards and certification was enlightening. I was also enlightened by chapter 39's fascinating discussion on commercial law applicable to component-based software, and the effects of the Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act (UCITA) on component-based software development and marketing.
This is an excellent book that covers the entire landscape of component-based software engineering and, although is a weighty 818 pages, is not difficult to read through. Each chapter is really a paper or article, so each is standalone. If you are dealing with off-shore development in any way, the book is especially valuable, and if you are doing CBSW in-house, the key differences between this approach and other development approaches are highlighted and will give you sufficient information with which to approach CBSW intelligently and effectively.
Excellent Anthology.......2001-07-30
This book is an excellent collection of articles describing all of the important issues surrounding the construction of component-based software systems. Each chapter describes a different aspect of the question of how to build a system using reusable components. Although each of these chapters is written by a different author or authors, they have been edited so that they read as a continuous whole. It is interesting that the editors were able to get some of the biggest names in the field to write articles on their specialties. A look at the author biographies show that they include industry practitioners, academics, industrial researchers, and independent consultants. Together they have a very impressive amount of experience and varied expertise. Perhaps my only complaint is that because so many different topics are covered, and each article is rather brief, some of the articles just touch the surface of the issues. But they do provide a balanced picture of these issues which then allow you to go out and do further in-depth reading on salient topics using the included list of references.

Book Description
Want to see what do-it-yourself filmmaking is all about? Benjamin Morgan did, so he made the low-budget, scraped together film Quality of Life. Shot on location in San Francisco's Mission District, the movie sheds light on a clandestine graffiti subculture, telling an authentic and gripping story of two young graffiti writers whose friendship and lives unravel after they get arrested. Morgan's book delves into how he and his crew were able to build their movie out of nothing, get it screened to sold-out audiences at film festivals nationwide, and even take home a couple awards. Both a compelling story and an intriguing behind-the-scenes look at underground film, Putting the Pieces Together explores a burgeoning field in the evolving world of cinema.
