You can't go wrong with ANY of his book. Don't look further, don't settle for less.
Unbelievable thing has happened to me -- I followed the advise in the book and received the promotion I wanted. Funny thing is that Roger warned that this method DOES work, and I didn't think it would work, but decided to give it a try.
Have YOU ever dreamt of getting a promotion shortly after starting a new job ??? I haven't, but it happened to me.

Wow. That's all I have to say. I'm halfway through this book, looking to finish it today (lol dreaming to), and I'm absolutely amazed. I have a hobby of studying books on psychology and sociology, and I've came across some good ones and some absolute rip-offs. Some of the bad ones go over some persuasion techniques that are very cliche and you have probably already heard of, and also don't offer much in the realm of content. In this book, however, every page has something to offer, and and it's all unique. What I expected out of this book was either a complete rip-off or that only a small bit of it would be useful, but I was very surprised at how satisfied I was with it. Among all the techniques in there I've found a lot that can be used in every day life, and I can actually imagine them working. It explains a lot about persuasion techniques you've came across but didn't recognize as such, and opens your eyes to an entirely new world of persuasion altogether. I'm actually planning on reading this book two or three times, and I think after that I might actually be a better persuader than I was before I bought it. All in all, this book is very professional and offers tons and tons of content. The authors life, which he uses ocassionally for examples in his techniques, shows how amazingly successful he is without it seeming like he's bragging. He has rented yaghts, probably went to every country in the world, has hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars, climbs mountains, crazy. Anyway, if you're into persusasion I highly recommend this book. You will not be disappointed.

Some of the topics in this book are just common-sense, some have been widely covered elsewhere and at much greater length (e.g. Cialdini's books on Influence), but all in all this is a lovely selection of the principles of persuasion and some case stories are very entertaining to read.

This book is information-rich, but there is still more you may want to learn to enhance your persuasive skills, such as Neuro-Linguistic Programming and Hypnotic Language Patterns.

Wow! I'm impressed! This is one of the best-researched, most thorough books on persuasion that I've had the pleasure of reading. Best of all - it's not just theory. The author, Roger Dawson adds tons of practical examples and applications for each technique. That means you can use this stuff immediately. By far one the best business books I've read in some time.

The book is easy to read and a diversified literary and historical background allow you to appreciate the subtle points that really demonstrate expertise in persuasion.

    Does he break down some interesting aspects of the concept of persuasion? Yes. Is this an entertaining book? Yes. Will it make you more stupid? Yes!

    The WSJ thought this book was interesting, so I picked it up. This book uses real world examples to illustrate it's points, along with personal anectdotes to describe marketing techniques and the forces behind them. However, I found many of his statements not only wrong, but STUPID. Take for example, page 28, "It's like an evolving war between viruses and antibiotics-" ok, that's just wrong, antibiotics not fight viruses, they fight bacteria. I can pull up at least 5 other examples of major stupidity before half the book is even done. I decided to close it's pages at that point, imagining people sharing his "factoids" at cocktail parties. Good golly that would be just terrible because everyone else will think you are an idiot but really it wouldn't be your fault, it would be Mr. Levine's fault. I sure hope no classes use this as part of the curriculum because it's riddled with factual and logistical errors.

    Take away from it what you will, it can still be an amusing bathroom read.

    If you like books on influence that have a strong academic foundation and plenty of real world examples, you'll like this one. And I loved reading it.

    Just before starting to write this review, I saw something that illustrates how each of us often sees certain things differently. Another reviewer believed the book's example of a car dealer's sales process lacks the details a reader needs to design a sales process. That example is precisely the one I'd decided to mention to you.

    Levine uses ten pages to detail this nine-step process. It's a terrific, practical example of getting the customer to make a series of small commitments that greatly increase the likelihood of a sale. You'll get enough info about each step and the overall process to adapt to your sales system to the extent you want. Most of us will choose to borrow parts of this and other processes you read about. One reason is that this particular process included unsavory steps.

    Sure, it will take some work and thinking on your part to improve your sales process. That's part of customizing sales systems so they work best for you.

    Interestingly, the book gives the real name (Mike Gasio of Fresno, CA) of the super-slick salesman...and notes that he left the auto sales business and became a teacher and counselor for at-risk young people. Mike now uses the same process of gradually increasing commitments to help these troubled youngsters make healthy changes in their lives. What a great story. And illustration of how we can effectively adapt persuasion tools to create either sleazy or healthy results. Once we have the information...the choice is ours.

    4 out of 5 stars Good intro to psychology of persuation, NOT a guide book on how to persuade........2006-01-12

    A very intersting introduction to the psychology of persuation, how everything from car salesman, education, religion, through to cults manipulate their victims. The book has certainly made me curious to find out more about the subject and I intend to read guidebooks on how to apply these principles in everyday life.

    In other words this is an intro to the psychology, but not a guide on how to apply it. For example the book talks in general terms about the process that car dealerships design for persuading a customer to commit to a sale, but gives not enough detail to how to design such a sales process.

    Easy to read. Lots of new material. Doesn't have a sales focus but is still a must for every salesperson.

    An academic who doesn't try and impress you with who he is. This is a fine book. Along with Hogan's The Psychology of Persuasion, this is one of the best.

    This should be a book that every consumer should read. What I find very interesting was that many of the techniques employed by sales people or con artist that was used on me was discribed step by step in this book. Though I didn't fall for them back then, it was eye opening to see 'their' textbook on persuading you.

    Most of the information and studies in this book are quite old. But nonetheless it is still revelant today. This most fascinating part for me was how retail stores and supermarkets showcases their merchandise. Or how simply by putting a more expensive item next to the cheaper item will generate more sales on the cheaper item. Sounds simple, but it isn't, that is why companies spend so much money on marketing and research.

    More rational people will generally not fall for tricks illustrated in this book. But unfortunately, these tricks do work because there are enough irrational people out there that are susceptible to them.

    This book is OK but not special. If you are a student of selling and prospecting is a big part of your job it is a decent addition to your library but something less than a must have title. If you own it you may find a nugget or two that will help you.

    The best book on getting heard on a favorable basis high up the food chain in B2B sales is: "Value Forward Selling."

    That being said this book will have some value for you.

    Let's cut to the chase...

    Get this book for only ONE reason -- the method WORKS because of the way executives THINK + ACT.

    They only do that which is most likely to SAVE THEIR OWN SKIN.

    They don't care about being right -- but they are PETRIFIED of being wrong.

    It is much safer for them to say NO to incoming new ideas (read: YOU).

    They can never be wrong if they simply zap all incoming new ideas (you).

    This method turns all that around!!!

    The so-called Circle of Leverage involves letting SEVERAL execs (in the company you are targeting) know that you have an incoming new idea.

    AND letting each of those execs know that you have also notified the OTHER execs (in that same company).

    AND telling all of them about all the OTHER companies you are ALSO notifying.

    Now you are playing on each exec's FEARS about being WRONG.

    Now each exec CANNOT ignore you, because, if they do, and they are WRONG for ignoring you (your incoming new idea is a winner), they KNOW that every OTHER exec will ALSO know about their MISTAKE.

    Also, what if ANOTHER company grabs your new incoming idea? -- That also could make them WRONG for ignoring you.

    This method changes their response from "I must NOT respond" to "I MUST respond!"

    I used it recently to send a proposal to all the big pharma companies. I did get turned down -- but.... here's the thing -- the rejections all came 6 weeks later. Not immediate, form-letter rejections (as would normally be the case).

    I'm convinced that, by using this method, the execs HAD to take the time to seriously consider my proposal before responding.

    They could not RISK just ignoring my proposal!

    Again, execs are not concerned with being right -- they only act out of FEAR of being WRONG.

    You just got access to your dream opportunity. You made it. You just popped open the door with your own "Open Sesame" secret (though you're no thief). Do you shudder to think what life would be like if you hadn't gotten in?

    Believe it-getting the access you need really is that important. At some point (many points) in your career(s), you're going to need to get in front of that person, group, etc. That's the point from which all your skills, knowledge, and brilliant ideas will germinate. If you can't get the access you need, none of that other stuff will matter.

    That's why this book is so valuable.

    Michael presents a detailed, methodical approach to getting the audience you need: The Circle of Leverage. It's a step-by-step approach that relies on risk-taking and perseverance. The results might be magical, but the process is real. He shows you why you've been shut out in the past (Section One), why you need to take a top-down approach (pp. 45-52), and a realistic discussion of things you can and can't control (pp. 114-122).

    The Circle of Leverage uses ten preparation steps (each of which is discussed in a detailed chapter in Section Three) and five execution steps (a detailed chapter on each in Section Four). The remaining two sections take you beyond the meat-and-potatoes (which are very impressive in their own rights). Chapter 33 gives you guidance on what to do once you're in, and Chapter 34 provides real-world context with sample scenarios and case histories.

    I highly recommend this book to anyone who sells, because we can all benefit from learning and applying The Circle of Leverage.

    Michael has put some common thoughts on paper, but has drilled down to their importance inthe sales process. If you go into this with the intention of gaining a leson to add to you collection of resources, you will find this very helpful. If you are looking for the golden egg, sorry but look again.

    There is no silver lining in the sales process, but with some sound advice you can dramatically increase your effectiveness which equalls more closed deals. This book gives some very sound advise as to some of the obsticle we as salespeople all face and a means of overcoming them.

    I highly recomend this for anyone interested in improving their chances of closing that next deal.

    I am a VP Sales for a technology firm and I only recently read this book. I was so impressed with the innovative material I flew to MN to meet the author! Despite what the negative reviewers have said, this book is NOT a sales manual. It IS a manual for obtaining access. It is an excellent precursor to an existing sales process, but the sales process already needs to be in place. The author uses the term "bolt-on" addition which is a very good visual depiction of how this tool should be used.

    Any good executive can tell you how difficult it is to be seen at the appropriate levels. More and more, callers and visitors are sloughed off to the next lower level, and if the caller doesn't have a compelling reason to stay at the executive level, they will invariably continue to be pushed down lower and lower until they are speaking with the lowliest of the non-decision makers, a "recommender." Horrors!

    Don't sell this book short. "Getting In" is a master treatise on how to develop and keep access at the C-level. I highly recommend it.

    Encountered it first as an audio book and then decided to buy it as a print book. The book is small in size but has an impactful message. How to be assertive and cooperative at the same time.     I found this book to be different than the typical management book. Rather than filled with the usual platitudes, it contains some real world advice on how to deal with and capitalize on situations that occur in a corporate environment. The book starts a bit slow, but it gets moving once it gets into the 10 strategies. The author has a nice conversational, straight-talking style of writing. The exercises and advice at the end of each chapter are excellent. I would recommend this book for new graduates starting in management and for seasoned veterans.

    This is a must read for anyone that wants to move further faster in the business world -- especially those who are fledglings in Corporate America! Marshall writes with clarity and good humor spiced with pithy observations and examples. This is more than a pie-in-the-sky, ethereal how-to book. She backs up her advice with practical, easy to implement ACTIONS to integrate the strategies into all areas of interactions with others. And her "excercises" are more than informative and effective: they're fun to boot!

    Marshall has written an exceptional book, a smart and practical book that reflects a very intelligent and perceptive grasp of business action and the people who are the action-eers. People run businesses and businesses are only as good as the people that run them. "How To Grow A Backbone" is at once very revealing and very familiar. We will all find ourselves somewhere in this book...for better or worse. We may smile or grimace at the unerring precision with which Marshall cuts straight to the bone, through all the usual fat, and shows us how much backbone we really have, I really have, you really have. Most important, she shows us how to grow what we're missing. Every CEO should read this book and then issue it to his staff, to everyone on the staff including the mail boy and the sweeper. If that CEO is big enough, smart enough (and secure enough) to encourage, to allow, to require, to inspire, his people to grow backbone, that boss will have one hell of a spinning business.     Whether you're new in sales or a seasoned veteran, this book is a treasure. The publisher had to use smaller print just to fit it all in! It's amazing how much information is here-the traditional stuff that you find in most sales books, plus a lot more. And it's all focused on helping you make the sale; the title of Part VII is You Must Close the Sale in Order to Go to the Bank. The message can't be any more clear!

    Let's start at the beginning. There are three sections at the start of the book that caught my attention right away. You know there's something special going on when you see sections titled "Why You Need This Book," "Why You Will Love This Book," and "Why an Intelligent, Sophisticated Person Like You Will Appreciate a Simple Book Like This." Simple book? In the fundamental principles that are presented, yes. In the depth and strength of the material, I wouldn't call this book simple. Sales professionals will spend extra time with each section to draw out all the value for themselves. It's just that kind of a book . . . the kind of tool that can be used for reference as well as straight-on learning.

    Stewart starts his substance with Position Yourself for Success presented in six chapters. The last chapter of the section is focused on closing. Part II: Develop Rapport and Build Relationships of Trust and Confidence: four chapters ending with emphasis on closing more sales. Continue through sections on pre-call planning, prospect involvement, discovery, presentations, and handling objections. Want more? A good resource section and an index complement the powerful content.

    In one form or another, every one of us is selling--ideas, services, products, maybe a combination of those three. If you want to read a book that presents, in simple language, the contemporary approach to selling, then I recommend CLOSE MORE SALES. The author: Mike Stewart, an international speaker, professional sales trainer and consultant, based in Atlanta.

    Far from being an armchair advisor, Mike Stewart spent many years learning salesmanship as a professional sales person. Additionally, he works with a variety of clients, training their sales professionals.

    In the preface, he laments that "Almost never are effective selling skills being taught." With this book, he addresses that problem. The book has the approval of the American Management Association, his publisher. I recommend that you get a copy. . .and close more sales.

    This book has a rather unusual, somewhat low-key approach toward sales expertise, but it is couched in such logical, practical, useful terms that it brings a different perspective to selling. Granted, it does emphasize the fact that one should like, or feel good, about whatever one sells, as though it was a joy and privilege to offer people something useful and desirable. The book offers specific guidance to this end. Lee Milteer, author of the previously well-received "Success is an Inside Job," makes a strong case for merging the spiritual aspects of one's life with a professional career.         The author claims that if you start the bid at $.99 with no reserve, that no matter what the item is, that you'll get more for it than you thought you'd get for it.

        i don't know if that's true. I've seen many auctions on eBay where the seller got ripped off because only one person bid on an item, and the bid was for $.99.

        While years ago the author sold his Viper using the suggestions in his book and made a profit on it, I don't think that in today's market that would happen. Even with his suggestions, things don't work that way anymore, at least from what I've seen happening.

        It isn't a bad ebook. The suggestions are pretty good if you're auctioning stuff that isn't expensive and you could afford to lose money on. However, if it is something that really is valuable, you shouldn't necessarily count on selling it for what it is worth if you follow his suggestions.

        The copyright on this may be 2004, but if you are just getting started selling on eBay this little gem is invaluable. I followed the advice, and with literally thousands of other products comparable to mine, I was one of the few who actually received bids and sold my items. I attribute everything to the sound principles in this ebook.
        It's fun to read, packed with good tips, and worth the price just for the sample email letters included! I encountered a "Troll" with my first auction, but thanks to this ebook I knew exactly what was happening and what to do.
        There may be other books that provide all the technical aspects, but this is the FIRST one you should read if you're a newbie.

        ...you're looking for good advice for selling a few items on eBay. It has very good advice for maximizing your bids, writing your ad, etc. However, if you're looking for something to guide you in starting an ongoing eBay business at a high level, this is not the choice to make. In addition, if you are already using eBay to run your "virtual garage sales", you're not going to find much here that you don't already know. So I suppose my 1 star rating is based as much on my expectations and goals as it is the book itself.

        I've just finished this ebook and I am quite pleased. I've read a few books of this sort and they are usually just useless fluff, and none really answer the question of what to sell on ebay. This book does do that, and gives pros and cons of different ways to purchase products.

        There are a few issues with the book. Its a bit out of date, it was publised in 2004, so some of the information is no longer valid. Also the author doesnt seem to be above slightly shady practices, like misrepresentation(which someone else explained in a previous post), or padding shipping(which everyone clearly does, but still its a bit shady).

        I was able to get this from my library's electronic resources, but I would recommend buying it if you cant do that. Its targeted to fairly new ebayers who have sold a few items and have a feedback of atleast 5 but preferably 10, and are looking to start at least a part-time business.

        This ebook describes the eBay of yesteryear. Today, when it comes to pricing your items, this ebook's mandate to start every auction at $.99 or less is a prescription for disaster. It's a buyers market on eBay and unless you know the demand for your item you may well be giving it away. That might be fine if you're just clearing out the closet but not if your buying merchandise to resell.

        There's some good basic info in here but nothing you couldn't find at eBay and its many forums for free.

        If your going to buy and resell product on eBay skip this book and read "eBay Strategies : 10 Proven Methods to Maximize Your eBay Business" buy Scott Wingo. It explains what sells and what doesn't sell well on eBay.
