Customer Reviews:
Good survey of Kirk and his writings.......2004-02-09
Russell Kirk (1918-1994) was a man of letters and a leader among traditional conservative writers and commentators. From his village home in Mecosta, Michigan he turned out scores of books, essays, articles and reviews on the history of political philosophy and on contemporary education, literary criticism, social/cultural criticism and economics. He even wrote short stories and novels in the gothic--ghost story genre. James E. Person, Jr., author of this volume, presents a brief biographical summary of Kirk's life and then discusses the various facets of Kirk's writings and philosophy. This volume should serve as an especially good introduction for those unfamiliar with Kirk. For those, such as myself, who have read
some of Kirk's books and other writings, it offers a good perspective on the entire Kirk canon. Those readers who are well acquainted with Kirk and his work can find here a helpful review. It includes a selected bibliography of Kirk's main writings and also a selected bibliography of other sources Person used in preparing this study of Kirk.
The Custodian of Western Civilization.......2003-06-28
Russell Kirk (1918-1994) was probably the premier conservative "man of letters" in 20th century America. He first gained national attention in 1953 with his publication of the CONSERVATIVE MIND. Kirk was the author of a large number of works, including history, literary criticism, cultural analysis, fiction, and even an economics textbook.
A central problem with understanding Kirk is the somewhat opaque nature of his writings. While it's easy to see what Kirk is against, it isn't always easy to see why, or what his solution to current political and cultural problems was. Perhaps because of this, Kirk is seldom quoted these days, and there hasn't been much in the way of secondary studies on his thought.
James Person has written a reliable overview of Kirk's thought (which also contains a modest biography of sorts). Person organizes this work thematically, hitting on the key areas of Kirk's thought (including discussions of his fiction, as well). My only gripe is that the book could have used a bit more editing. Sentences tend to drag on, and some of the writing is a bit "chatty" for a scholarly work. (Mr. Person hasn't heard of Orwell's rule about not using two words when one will do.)
In light of the current "conservative wars" I found portions of this book (published in 1999) quite interesting. I didn't know that Kirk's last foray into politics was in 1992 when he was chairman of Pat Buchanan's Michigan campaign. It's not surprising that Kirk is ignored by the neocon nitwits who run the conservative movement today. There is also an interesting story about how Kirk was attacked by certain Straussian neocons concerning his criticisms of Lincoln. Although Kirk disagreed with much of Lincoln's agenda, he called Lincoln a "conservative" and a "great man." Much to the consternation of the neocons, anything less than total support of King Abraham wasn't good enough.
A must read.......2000-05-01
Anyone who is interested in conservatism must read this biography of the man who articulated the conservative philosophy in post WWII America.
This book is well written, well researched and is a good read.

A compendium of practical strategies and applicable methods.......2005-02-04
Now in a newly revised and expanded second edition, Enhancing Teaching And Learning: A Leadership Guide For School Library Media Specialists by Jean Donham (Library Director, Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa) is focused upon helping school media specialists to become influential leaders and collaborators in elementary and high school libraries and media centers. All of the diverse elements of successful school library media programs are covered in specific detail, including benchmarks; emerging technologies; collaborative planning, scheduling; collections; literacy; information literacy; student assessment; evaluation; and leadership. Enhancing Teaching And Learning is a veritable compendium of practical strategies and applicable methods for achieving school library goals. All of the contemporary issues relevant to school library and media center operations are addressed including new formats in collections, reading, the Web, information literacy standards, state-mandated tests, data collection and analysis, benchmarking, and so much more. Ideal as a classroom text for Library Science students, and as a field guide for practicing school librarians and media center specialists, Enhancing Teaching And Learning is an indispensable addition to academic library reference collections and professional resource reading lists.
Excellent guide for media specialists and teachers!.......2000-05-25
Enhancing Teaching and Learning is a terrific guide for media specialists, teachers and school principals. Donham gives excellent, practical advice covering all aspects of managing a school library media center and attaining the level of a top-notch library media program that is integrated into the school's instructional program. The message is ably conveyed to the reader that one of the ultimate goals as media specialists and teachers is to enhance students learning. Donham expresses throughout the book the importance of leadership from the media specialist and collaboration between the media specialist and the teachers in order to attain this ultimate goal. Donham writes in a clear, concise, practical manner. Each chapter contains realistic examples to further enhance points being made. Also, each chapter culminates with "Action Strategies" that are broken into three components: learning and teaching, information access and delivery, and program administration. In addition to the impressive lists of references contained in each chapter, there is a "Further Reading" section at the end of the book that contains very pertinent resources divided into topic areas "for enriching the professional collection of the school library media center." As a current MLS student, I have found this book to be invaluable in my preparation to become a media specialist. I would recommend this book to new media specialists entering the field, to "seasoned" media specialists, and to teachers and principals alike. With numerous research citations to support her premise, Donham does an outstanding job of communicating the value and the impact in having a fully integrated library media program within the school's curriculum.

All 3 Got into Bronx Science!.......2007-03-07
My daughter and her two friends wanted to study and take the test for Bronx High School of Science. I researched the books on amazon.com and chose this one. They only had five weeks to study and they were very ambitious and got together four times a week until the test. When they finished the book, they had a few days before the test and then went through a little of the Kaplan book (the full-purple cover)and took the two tests in the Kaplan book.
I'm excited to say that they got their test scores back and all three of them got into Bronx Science.
Also, I should note that they all put Bronx Science as their 1st choice on the application--this gives you an advantage because the specialized schools go through the top scores of the students who put their school as number 1, and then if there are any slots left, they go to the students with top scores who put that school as their #2 choice.
I spoke to my daughter and she said that the Kaplan's Purple-Covered Book was even more informative than Baron's. She said that they only spent the last week on the Kaplan book but that during the drive to the test she learned some things in the Kaplan book that she had not learned from the Baron's. So if you go through both books, you'll be in great shape!
Good luck to you!

Book Description
This book is about change. It is about the change teachers create and experience as they move toward a more flexible, interpretive view of their roles. The articles were written by practicing teachers who have examined some of the uncertainties and problems they encountered when moving from a traditional to a holistic perspective in their teaching.
These teachers have written in order to share their questions, the conflicts they have undergone, and the change in beliefs that are part of becoming learner-directed teachers. The binding thread of the collection is the realization that teaching is a learning enterprise, and that teachers learn from their students, from each other, and ultimately from themselves.

Book Description
The Library of Alexandria was one of the greatest cultural adornments of the late ancient world, containing thousands of scrolls of Greek, Hebrew and Mesopotamian literature and art and artifacts of ancient Egypt. This book demonstrates that Alexandria became--through the contemporary reputation of its library--a point of confluence for Greek, Roman, Jewish and Syrian culture that drew scholars and statesmen from throughout the ancient world. It also explores the histories of Alexander the Great and of Alexandria itself, the greatest city of the ancient world. This new paperback edition offers general readers an accessible introduction to the history of this magnificent yet still mysterious institution from the time of its foundation up to its tragic destruction.
Customer Reviews:
Multiple Musings on the Library of Alexandria.......2006-07-09
This is a highly interesting book, collecting together a good assortment of different articles that (more or less) focus on the great Library of Alexandria. The articles are quite varied in approach: one is an imaginative tour of the city verging on the whimsical, another a dry detailed account of archaeological finds. One is an intriguing down-to-earth social history of scholar and student culture of the time, while another is a far-ranging exploration of the mystical beliefs and practices of the Neo-Platonists. This variety keeps the book fresh as one is reading it, and approaching the subject from multiple disciplinary angles in this manner keeps the presentation from becoming simplistic or one-dimensional. All of the articles are learned and scholarly in a good way, written so as to be accessible to the reasonably well-educated non-specialist (like me).
My one nitpick of this book would be that many of the articles seem only tangentially related to the Library of Alexandria itself. In fact, of the ten articles in the book (counting the Intro), only two seem really focused on the actual Library per se: the editor's introduction and article #3 (Barnes' "Cloistered Bookworms"). The others, while interesting in their own right and not utterly irrelevant to the title, seem to veer off more and more, until by the final article we are way off (a fun, nitpicky analysis of Eco's novel " Name of the Rose" in the light of what medieval libraries were really like). It is as if the editor was straining to get enough material to put together a book. Surely there is more to say about the actual library itself?--There's a whole book out there just on the Library's bibliographer, after all ("Kallimachos: The Alexandrian Library and the Origins of Bibliography" by Rudolf Blum).
Still, this is a fine book that I'd recommend to anyone interested in the Library of Alexandria (both in and of itself and phenomena tangential to it); as an utter layperson in this field I enjoyed it a lot, but my guess is that even the Classical expert will find something here worthwhile.
In case you're wondering, here are the articles:
"Introduction: Alexandria in History and Myth" by Roy MacLeod
1. "Before Alexandria: Libraries in the Ancient Near East" by D.T. Potts
2. "Alexandria: The Umbilicus of the Ancient World" by Wendy Brazil
3. "Cloistered Bookworms in the Chicken-Coop of the Muses: The Ancient Library of Alexandria" by Robert Barnes

Book Description
At the height of the Cold War, dozens of radical and progressive writers, illustrators, editors, librarians, booksellers, and teachers cooperated to create and disseminate children's books that challenged the status quo. Learning from the Left provides the first historic overview of their work. Spanning from the 1920s, when both children's book publishing and American Communism were becoming significant on the American scene, to the late 1960s, when youth who had been raised on many of the books in this study unequivocally rejected the values of the Cold War, Learning from the Left shows how "radical" values and ideas that have now become mainstream (including cooperation, interracial friendship, critical thinking, the dignity of labor, feminism, and the history of marginalized people), were communicated to children in repressive times. A range of popular and critically acclaimed children's books, many by former teachers and others who had been blacklisted because of their political beliefs, made commonplace the ideas that McCarthyism tended to call "subversive." These books, about history, science, and contemporary social conditions-as well as imaginative works, science fiction, and popular girls' mystery series-were readily available to children: most could be found in public and school libraries, and some could even be purchased in classrooms through book clubs that catered to educational audiences. Drawing upon extensive interviews, archival research, and hundreds of children's books published from the 1920s through the 1970s, Learning from the Left offers a history of the children's book in light of the history of the history of the Left, and a new perspective on the links between the Old Left of the 1930s and the New Left of the 1960s.

Book Description
This title, Brain Friendly School Libraries, gives concrete practical examples of how to align school library programs and instructional practice with the six key concepts of brain-compatible learning: increasing input to the brain; increasing experiential data; multiple source feedback; reducing threat; involving students in learning decision making; and interdisciplinary unit planning. It includes chapters that summarize the current brain research and current thinking about its implication for instructional practice in the school library media center as well as discusses the work of Ellen Langer (mindful learning), Geoffrey and Renette Caine, Bob Sylwester and other major proponents of teaching with the "brain in mind."
Customer Reviews:
Good, but different for U.S. School Libraries, & No Pics.......2007-06-21
Just started the book and looks good! However, the author repeatedly uses the term "teacher-librarian", while the fact is that "teacher-librarians" are used less and less in the U.S., except High School level. I am assuming that since the author is Canadian she simply didn't know this.
In many states, such as mine, you find "library media paraprofessionals", "library assistants", etc. working totally independently in their schools. We do everything with a LOT of training, just for a lot less money. This is the wave of the future, nationally, with continued budget cuts. Some school districts are even going to 1/2 time library staff, the other 1/2 time is student or volunteer staffed. I would have like to have seen some PHOTOS of some of her projects, ideas, displays, etc. And how about some free or budget-friendly ideas, as some things in the book would be WAY out of our budget...
