5 out of 5 stars Great Ideas!.......2007-03-12

Love this book! If you're in to modern storage solutions or want the best of the best products... this is your book! Great coffee table book.

3 out of 5 stars Happy but not impressed!.......2007-01-20

Being a 28yr. old woman, who is not very domestic, I love the book and learned a lot. I would describe the book as a personal/household, "how-to" book. The book features checklists for grocery, kitchenwares, chores, home and auto maintenance and cleaning. It tells the best way to remove stains from everywhere, to do laundry, to decorate, to paint. And they give some quick/easy recipes. However, I don't think experienced moms and dads would be that impressed with most of the info!

4 out of 5 stars the book is Real Simple - but don't let that deter you.......2005-12-23

This book reads extremely fast. The page layout is attractive (just like the magazine), but alas this arrangement includes a lot of white space. Many of the tips are too familiar, e.g., sprinkling lemon juice on your fruit salad to prevent browning, and some advice is applicable only to homeowners or parents (I am neither - yet).

Still, there is enough novel advice to make this volume worthwhile for a poor student who appreciates tips for organizing and entertaining. I recommend this for a housewarming gift.

note: book is hardcover.

5 out of 5 stars A Book To Make Life Easier.......2005-11-10

I'm a fan of Real Simple magazine, so this book hit the spot for me. It gives you ideas for reusing items. Now I know what to do with the stack of dryer sheets that I'd been saving. There are inexpensive tips and lots of how-to advice. Some may sound familiar, but there's bound to be some you had not thought of before.

4 out of 5 stars All kinds of tricks and tips from Real Simple Magazine.......2005-09-22

I like "Real Simple" magazine but I don't like saving the back issues. (I have enough clutter, believe me.) So the editors of this excellent magazine have compiled all kinds of tricks and ideas into this single volume. It's a lot of fun to read and has some very helpful stuff for keeping your home in order.

The chapters include:

1. Grooming
2. Getting Dressed
3. In the Kitchen
4. In the Office
5. Cleaning
6. Decorating
7. Entertaining
8. Celebrating

1. Grooming includes how to unclog your drain. I am going to go try this; my bathroom sink is not draining properly. Here, you dump a cup of baking soda down and add a gallon of boiling water..

Naturally, the grooming section is homemade recipes for face scrub, toothpaste (?) and fun ideas like freezing aloe vera gel for sunburn relief--if you KNOW you are just going to go get burnt, you might as well prepare.

2. Getting Dressed has hints on mending, washing dainty things,

3. In the Kitchen--not the best part of the book, I thought, some basic recipes and how to use a wine bottle as an emergency rolling pin.

4. In the Office; someone peeked in my desk drawer at work, because there is a suggestion for supplies like toothbrush and toothpast and a lint roller, plus some basic makeup. I have this. They didn't find the hair dryer and shampoo I keep in the office bathroom in case I get drenched or sweated out and have to do my hair over at work..hahah. Another suggestion, spare house keys! Good idea.

5. The cleaning section has a stain removal guide, probably worth the book for this alone.

6. Decorating, lots of tips, but most useful, how to paint a room.

7. The entertainment section has fun things like freezing berries to make colorful ice cubes for summer drinks, and how to buy for a cocktail party.

The book ends with all the marvelous things you can do with dental floss, aside from flossing between your teeth.

Good for the newly-wed or just-got-first apartment couple. This is a pretty volume that would make a welcome gift for just about anyone.

    Book Description

The Hegemony of Common Sense: Wisdom and Mystification in Everyday Life is a path-breaking synthesis, a unique contribution to the study of class and consciousness. Dean Wolfe Manders revisits a question posed by Sombart a century ago: "Why is there no socialism in the United States of America?" To probe this question, he initiates a multi-method study of capital and class as cultural realities. Class, he contends, is insinuated in the fabric of "everyday-historical" experience, which people process via often contradictory "common sense" categories. Artfully adapting themes from Gramsci, Marx, James, and Mead, Manders explores these categories from several angles. Particularly trenchant is his incisive inquiry into paroemiology, the study of popular sayings.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly labeled commercial or a fantastic piece of crap-writing, take your pick.......2007-09-24

Amusingly enough this book was shelved in the psychology section of my local mega-bookstore. It's amusing because what the author does is systematically tear down psychology, as well as systematically and excessively plug his own brand of philosophical counseling (which sounds little better than the most mediocre methods of psychological counseling). Admittedly there are wacky psychological practices out there, but most of the time the author builds up straw men, picking the most ridiculous examples as standard depictions of psychology. I appreciated the sprinkling of philosophical quotes throughout the book, but I found the writing poor and pedantic, I was also irritated that the case studies were frustratingly short and very airy. Oh, and of a 271 page book I only made it to page 163; I just don't have that much time to waste. Maybe it gets better after page 164, but I doubt it.

1 out of 5 stars You can cure cancer this way too!.......2007-09-15

C'mon people, depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain. No good advice is going to magically change that. You wouldn't try to eliminate a brain tumor or diabetes through the power of positive thinking, would you? So why try it with depression? Drugs and psychotherapy have lots of evidence to back them up. This book (and so many others like it) sound too good to be true, and THEY ARE! Best of luck if you still wanna wish your depression away!

    3 out of 5 stars Socratic Method.......2006-08-16

If I follow the thesis then the ideal might be to stand up, go to the pine forest, drain the tree of sap, drink the hemlock and imitate the philosophy that advocated ultimate integrity.

Well I'm not so hard core you know? And I don't exercise quite like I suspect I ought that muscle that can help enormously in finding a way through life stresses. So I read this book quickly leaning against the counter(opps column) in the local library watching my kids check out books on "really great Greek and philosophical learnings"...well we had a Dickens in the pile too....and lots of good intentions. Myself, I'm pretty much convinced I need to stay out of Aristotelean constructs. So I check out general semantics.

Here's my take on this book. If books heal you, if intellectualizing, or reading, or writing of man and soul, if you are helped by Tolstoy and turned on by poetry and taken with Euripides..then I think it might be worthy to read and apply the text to your life and see if you feel any better. If the real issue is working too hard, being stressed, underpaid, needing love, bills, relationships, working for a boss or in a work structure stultifyingly oppressive with humans dying and ill and relatives straining at the bit to devalue you, maybe a bit fat and other kinds of inadequacies...say you have Puer Complex...well then you might consider it's a bit much to sort with text in hand. But it can't hurt to look inside yourself and make a few decisions.Get to the gym, decide you can live simply and happily, praise your mate more. Evaluate priorities. Use some structures intellectually, especially if Prozac came up recently at the doctor's office. If that seemed unhelpful. And after all most philosophies are very supportive of personal decision making based on logical processing. So just another book to help with a perspective. Nothing more. It was where the "philosophies came from", a note for my commenter below. The book, it was the book.

Me, I just visited a neurological doctor that recommended I remain in secrecy if taking Prozac, told me I was a "dog" (not like a dog) and if so if overweight and dealing with throwing up my food I'd get Prozac(not exactly my issue). He twice called it "your crazy pill" and held up a noose to his neck twice in a kind of signing death way to obliquely hint at suicide in depression and my not "being in that place". Thanks Dr. L. I'll delay that return visit until your personality is re-inserted. He also informed me that he "wasn't my father" or working for the drug company, called me fat, told me that in nerve pain brains can't get enough happy stuff in 10% of "kind of not quite made right people". So then. Time to use Prozac to get the good happy stuff. Well with information presented like that font of knowledge this self proclaimed "Man of Science" really gave me the concrete tools to make a decision.

Frankly I consider taking a med. like Cymbalta or Prozac with complete care. But not as a closed book.

If the ancients had had them, they'd have used them.
If you don't know that you don't get the Greeks(and their Latin brothers) at all. Physicians, prescription, elixir, hey medicate...look up the roots of some of the medical language, get back to me. Look only at what was used in these worlds, good grief.... Have some more wine Bacchus, okay. Anyway I have severe pain all the time except occasionally from a spinal problem and other issues, plus stresses anyway from the pain and weight gain the probability I'm slightly depressed-I own that.Yeah.

I do have my humor. And a match to light my way just like everyone else.

So I have to decide if I want to try what to use to address the issues of my unhappiness and pain. Perhaps application of ancient philosophies has a place in my decision tree which at the moment seems only to sprout two branches...no, and I don't like that.I'm looking for new buds.

I think one place to start is getting a good handle on figuring out what you want, what's something you can take, what risks are involved, what your hang ups are about it, what others might do. We used to do this in therapy talking but ok..anyway...now we blink lights and you get a seizure possibly or waves realign. This book might help you give it all a good think. So go Greek. Not to trivialize. It matters. I found the book not a tremendous boon.

And I hope it all gets better but whatever you chose don't forget that if the philosophers really had it all together they might not have been asking so many questions....so you are in good company trying to find your way. That alone is reassuring for me.

    3 out of 5 stars not bad.......2006-05-02

this book is not nearly as bad as some here seem to think, and it's not nearly as good as some others think. It's okay, presents a fairly interesting thesis, even if it's forced and formulaic, it still jarred my thinking at least a little.

1 out of 5 stars Lou: a very arrogant man.......2006-04-25

Another glaring example of a book about depression by someone who has obviously never been depressed in his life.

As another reviewer has commented, the title says it all here. The author is a know-it-all with no real insight into the lives of the people he is writing about, and his ideas are (again, as another reviewer has said), flat-out dangerous.

I've read every philosopher this man has read (sometimes he seems merely to have read a list of "important quotes" from these philosophers) and have probably studied twice as much literature. And that ain't where I've found my happiness, folks.
Lou likes to toss around quotes--a good sign that he's no more than a dilettante in the intellectual world; "quoters" are nearly always poor, amateur intellectuals.

The only people this book can hope to sit comfortably with are the kinds who don't really need it. It will appeal to folks who, like Lou, like to gloat (without really realizing that what they are doing amounts to gloating) over how much more correct their form of living is than the form of certain folks around them. Lou and his crowd should all be ashamed of themselves--but of course they never will be, for such people are rarely capable of legitimate self criticism of this type. Leave the serious scholarship to the depressed people, folks! We know how to think for real. Instead, go out there and do what you're actually good at--have fun, play in the pretty sand!

If you are depressed, this book will do nothing but tick you off--save your money.

Everyday wisdom—in the form of inspirational quotes and observations—from best-selling author Wayne W. Dyer is just the thing to make your days more joyous and meaningful!

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Literary gem.......2007-05-22

After finding this book while on vacation in one of those little beach town bookstores, I immediately read it and 4 years later, I am still finding that the wisdoms continue to apply and deepen in meaning. Instead of a book, I think of it rather as daily affirmations- each one different for whatever it is that I am experiencing on that particular day.

I recommend this book for everyone and anyone. What I enjoy most about this book is its spiritual undertones, which can be applied to any religion or spiritual background.

    5 out of 5 stars Everday Wisdon.......2007-01-12

This little book is replete with uplifting thoughts for everyone, for so many of the challenges we are faced with at any given moment. Whatever is not applicable today, may be so at another time in our lives. It's simple without being trite or preachy.

Wayne Dyer definitely writes his books with intention. And this one is intended to remind you of everyday wisdom. I loved it and you will too. A must have.

    5 out of 5 stars Bite-Size Chunks Of Dyer's Wit And Wisdom.......2005-03-26

"I fill myself with love, and I send that out into the world. How others treat me is their path; how I react is mine." --Wayne Dyer

Every so often, I would visit Wayne Dyer's website because of its neat random quote generator. Sometimes a hoot, but always thought-provoking, Dyer's pithy quotes are a treat to read and digest.

Now, Dyer's wonderful insights are available in the 301-page book Everyday Wisdom-a collection of 300 sayings by the beloved self-development teacher. These quotes address topics such as love, forgiveness, the power of thoughts, internal and external peace, intuition, empowerment, authenticity, attitude, death, abundance, and much more. Here are few samples of Dyer's wit and wisdom featured in this book:

*You're already complete and whole, and nothing external to yourself in the physical world can make your more complete.

*No one can create anger or stress within you. Only you can do that by virtue of how you process your world.

*What you think about expands. If your thoughts are centered on what's missing, then what's missing, by definition, will have to expand.

*Go beyond the ideas of succeeding and failing--these are the judgments. Stay in the process and allow the universe to handle the details.

*Our beliefs are the invisible ingredients in all our activities.

*Once you've learned how to enter your inner kingdom, you have a special retreat within that's always available to you.

*So many people are expecting a miracle instead of being a miracle.

*No one knows enough to be a pessimist.

Everyday Wisdom is great to thumb through for inspiration and to aid in personal growth. You could even choose a quote and meditate on it throughout the day-as well as consider how you might apply its wisdom. Or, if you're in need of guidance, ask a questions and turn to a page at random for sage advice.

Not only is this book a wonderful addition to any library, but it would also make a meaningful gift for others.

5 out of 5 stars A Single Quote Can Transform Your Life.......2004-02-07

"Each time you send love in response to hate, you diffuse the hate." ~Wayne Dyer

It seems amazing to think about how words can destroy or enliven our lives. One sentence can inspire a new direction and a phrase can transform your existence. When we are struggling with decisions it is often the wise words of a friend that saves us from making the wrong choice.

Dr. Wayne W. Dyer's thoughts have always been an inspiration to me and I see them as meaningful messages for a hurting planet. There is so much pain in life, but there is also the possibility of living in pure joy.

I still love thinking about this quote: "You are not a human being having a spiritual experience. You are a spiritual being having a human experience."

    What an empowering thought.

This book is filled with inspiring ideas that refocus your attention on how things actually are instead of how you thought they originally should be. On the surface we may feel that we are drowning in life's challenges, but when you think of yourself as an eternal soul, problems melt away and you view your life from an eternal perspective. This doesn't mean that you don't deal with anguish and sorrow, but you deal with it from a new perspective. Life becomes a blink of the eye in the light of an eternal existence.

I love how Dr. Dyer explains forgiveness as an act of self-love because when you forgive you simply don't have to carry the problem around with you.

Dr. Dyer is really stating what our souls already know to be true. He just says everything so brilliantly. Lately, I've been contemplating his advice about loving those who are difficult to love. I am thinking about his statement about loving and his statement about "the more you give away, the more you get back."

A few of the quotes in this book made me laugh out loud. Dr. Dyer is not always serious and can actually be rather playful in his use of words.

Words can be used as powerful weapons to destroy or they can bring great beauty to our lives. I see beauty in Dr. Wayne Dyer's revelation of inner wisdom. I seem to think about his words at least once a day, especially when I start to think negatively. I am just a soul trying to live in this body that ties me to the earth. One day I won't live here anymore and it is empowering to think of myself as an eternal being temporarily in this school of life.

"You create your thoughts, your thoughts create your intentions, and your intentions create your reality." ~Dr. Wayne W. Dyer

I'm working on this one! However lately I've noticed that my "invisible and silent" thoughts are being heard loud and clear. Although I still think our lives benefit from the power of the positive choice. Some thoughts magically transform your life without the addition of action, and some thoughts grow inside you and propel you forward into action.

If you think about it, spiritual teachers have been giving us the secret keys to inner wisdom throughout time. I think of quotes as keys. I can use them to open up new and unexplored territory in the areas of thought and spirituality.

Dr. Dyer has a lot of keys to free you from the prison of negativity.

3 out of 5 stars the good the bad and the ugly.......2006-07-20

I originally gave this book one star because I felt that quite a bit of the interpretations were very negative. So I went back and re-read through parts of it because I thought, "Could it have been that bad?"

Here is what I liked. There were some good observances of the cards pictorial aspects and relation to some real world experiences. There was a good contrast with the Kabbala. Ther were interpretations that gave both positive and negative aspects of cards.

Here is what I didn't like. Reversals were only lightly mentioned here and there. There seemed to be an over abundance of negative interpretations. I don't like relating tarot to psychobabble. The esotaric meanings interpretations should not be mixed in with psychological interpreations. They are two separate worlds. That's why I don't like Jungian interpretations. Interpretations were ambiguous and vague at times.

That said, it was just ok for me but you might enjoy it. Read the 8 of swords and you'll get a good idea about how the writing goes. She gets on these self help and women's second class citizenship tyraids and just doesn't seem to be able to let go. There's a lot of pushing of support groups, I think maybe she thinks anyone into tarot needs mental help or something.

    4 out of 5 stars i like it!.......2005-08-09

i have been reading tarot cards for 15 years and oftentimes have found myself bored by the minors, hoping to pick majors instead. after taking some time off from tarot, i realized i needed help appreciating the entire deck. for me, this book did that. i enjoyed isabel's personal stories about her experience reading with the cards. i found her to be very aware and delving. she recommends spending time with the court cards to feel which ones resonate and which ones don't - a refreshing idea. i also had little experience with the kabbalah and tarot connection, and this was a nice intro. a warning: some may find her personality irritating, she can tend to go on, but i forgive this as just genuine enthusiam for the cards and kabbalah.

This book typifies just about everything that is wrong with contemporary Tarot scholarship. It's not really the author's fault, she's only a product of what's become the New Age blight on Tarot -- during the last three decades -- a sort of Tabla Rosa situation where everyone and anyone projects endlessly (their childlike, magical thinking) onto the Tarot. The opportunity was truly grand here, to actually take a step-by-step inquiry into how the various sefirah correspond to the numbered suits of the Minor Arcana. Of course this has already been done, cogently, and succinctly, by (one of Quest Book's favorite author's) Aleister Crowley in his Book of Thoth. Read his section on the Naples Arrangement -- and prepare to have your mind challenged AND inspired -- search Google for a taste. Crowley details the way numbers, moving from 1 to 10, complicate and thicken in their descent into matter, finally colliding, piling and melting into a problematic, paradoxic heap when they reach the 10 spot. You'll be huanted by his description and, perhaps, driven to hunker down and explore and study and learn. Kliegman's book takes one of the most profound aspects of the Tarot and denudes it (with her clunky attempts at colloquial-styled writing) into a guazy, New Agey, cotton candy-ish, plattiude-riddled froth. Yet another book showing that when it comes to the Tarot -- the carnival STILL hasn't left town.

    5 out of 5 stars Truly inspiring............2003-05-06

In TAROT AND THE TREE OF LIFE, Isabel Kliegman-who apparently believes you have to give it away to keep it-shares some of the knowledge and insight she has acquired through years of studying and working with the Tarot. Many authors have written about the Tarot and most have something useful to say to the reader. However, the majority of these experts have linked the cards of the major arcana with various aspects of psychology, religion, and/or literature and ignored the cards of the minor arcana. Kliegman focuses her examination on the cards of the minor arcana because she says: 1) the minor cards are often treated as secondary but she believes they contain much relevant information; 2) the imagery in the minor cards is more accessible (unlike the major arcana which depict `archetypes', the cards in the minor arcana show "real" people doing more or less "real" things; 3) studying the minor arcana can illuminate the different gifts of the two decks.

Kliegman teaches English and comparative religion and it is evident from her writing that her background has contributed to the formation of some unique and inspired ideas about the links between Jewish mysticism and the Tarot. Although her primary purpose, as indicated by the title of her book, is to link the Jewish `Tree of Life' with the Tarot, she infuses her work with other religious material and connections as well as a bit of Jungian psychology. The most unusual aspect of this book-for which she makes a compelling case-is the notion that swords are symbolic of fire (and the thinking function) while wands are associated with air (intuition function and inspiration). Whether you agree with her ideas or not, you will want to read this book to expand your awareness. She is a provocative writer and her book complements Rachel Pollack's work on the major arcana and the minor arcana. Kliegman lives and works in California, where she writes and consults on the Tarot.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome & Enlightening.......2003-03-18

This book is awesome, and oh, so enlightening. So far, it's my favorite book on the Tarot, bar none. I love the explanation of the symbolism of the minor arcana cards, the history, the Kabbalah connections and the mythological connections. It's amazing how much easier it is to learn (and step into) the cards when you have some historical perspective to draw upon. I memorized the suit of Swords and the suit of Cups this weekend after reading the chapters on each of them. If you're new to Tarot and desire a deeper knowledge of the minor arcana, then this book is a must-have for your Tarot library.

      Book Description

Humorous animal photos are captioned with witty one-liners that touch on virtually every aspect of our lives. The threefold purpose of this clever little gift book is to provoke a smile, remind the reader of typical human foibles, and inspire readers to recognize something of themselves in the humorous phrases. For instance, a typical photo shows a family of lazy walruses lounging at the seashore, and the accompanying caption reads: “Exercise is a dirty word. Every time I hear it, I wash my mouth out with chocolate.” Close-up, black-and-white photos appear on every two-page spread, and each cleverly-captioned picture reminds us that animals and human beings have more in common than we sometimes like to admit.

It's worth having as it is but it's not the classic that it might have been. A hardcover edition with the prayers in Hebrew with transliteration, as well as the fine English translation contained in this book, would have been made this book a classic. To my knowledge the book I describe does not exist but it should. We need it! Publishers take note!

These are a collection of beautiful prayers in English. I would look forward to a Hebrew with transliteration version in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Prayers from and for old souls.......2006-10-06

A well-written book of prayers, especially one meant to be carried on one's person, is worth its weight in gold. Unfortunately, all too many of them are about as inspirational as a dime store greeting card. Either that or they're so sectarian as to be of limited use generally.

It was with some lack of expectation, therefore, that I purchased a copy of THE GENTLE WEAPON. Much to my surprise it was the one book of prayers that succeeded at being intelligent, inspiring, and -- while unabashedly theistic -- theologically sophisticated.

I found only one prayer to be questionable: "...everything that happens to me... is an expression of Your everlasting love, and Your concern for my ultimate good." I prefer Reb Noson's prayer: "You send hidden messages to each person, in every situation, to bring him or her closer to Your service, in accordance with the place, the time, and the individual." So when I read "an expression of" I substitute: "embraced by."

I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for meaningful and compelling language for personal prayer.

5 out of 5 stars Prayers for everyone who needs to pray .......2005-01-30

This little collection is a selection of prayers from one of the great teachers of Hasidut Rebbe Nachman of Breslov. Rebbe Nachman said " When you pray, hold nothing back from God. Pour out your heart with honest openness as if you were speaking to your very best friend. "
The element of non- fixed prayer of what is called hiboddedut of being alone with God for part of each day was practiced and perfected by Rebbe Nahman.
Each of the prayers is a kind of meditation which can help the person think about their own situation and relation to God. And this when the Hebrew word ( tefilah) has in it the meaning of self- reflection and examination in moving closer to God.
I believe that these prayers can inspire and help in many different situations .There are prayers on ' loss' and on' arrogance' and on 'living to the fullest ' and on ' joy' and on ' healing ' and on ' crying and sighing' and on ' true nourishment' and on ' giving' and on much much more.
A wonderful little book to take with one everywhere, and from time to time dip in, for inspiration and spiritual strengthening.

5 out of 5 stars A Lovely Prayer Book for All.......2001-06-29

Though I was raised in a Prostestant church, until quite recently, I had no belief in a God or a Higher Power. When I finally came to this belief, I came empty-handed, with nothing but the Lord's Prayer and the Serenity Prayer to pray. I searched for a non-denominational prayer book and finally found this wonderful little book. I use it daily, as a meditation book, and I use it as a source for particular prayers, as needed. This is truly an excellent gift to people like me, those just coming to faith and learning to pray.

      5 out of 5 stars I can't go any higher than 5 Stars???.......2007-05-21

What an experience reading about these two delightful sisters who were winners in every area of life...Back when Black people weren't accepted by most white people the one sister became a dentist of all things...Here she was Negro, a woman on top of it and going against all odds she didn't let that stop her! During the depression years they made candy and sold it at dept. stores. and survived without any kind of welfare. Never had a phone in their house. "if people wanted to talk with us they could come see us" was their motto..

The time they moved the refrigerator downstairs from an upper floor because the man they had hired kept putting them off day after day....and they were near 100 yrs old! Forget the exact age but they never let anything stop them if they needed to do it.

They did their yoga exercises and shows pictures of them. Also some simple recipes they used over the years. They never bought detergent or dishwashing liquid...made their own and the recipe is included. They even include a recipe for Rose Wine and their hot yeast rolls. The candy recipe is included also.

This book is my all-time favorite and I have ended up buying it 3 times since I am in the health care business and work with seniors and try to encourage and give them the joy and hope of this wonderful book.

5 out of 5 stars Simple timeless wisdom for eternity.......2007-04-01

This is one of the most special books in my collection because it was a present from Rabbi Chaim Adelman of the Chabad House at UMass-Amherst in May of 2002. (In addition to being a great person and really funny, Rabbi Adelman was also quite possibly my favorite rabbi I've ever had.) There was a little party one night for those of us who were about to graduate, and towards the end he gave each of us this book (the commemorative edition that was printed that year in honor of what would have been the Rebbe's 100th birthday) and wrote lovely personalised inscriptions in them for us. This is the type of present that can last a lifetime instead of only being read once and then put aside, or maybe reread once in awhile. It's a book like the Tao Te Ching; it can be read and reread over and over again and always give the reader new profound insights. This simple timeless wisdom doesn't even have to be read from cover to cover; one can just go through it day by day, or whenever one wants to, and digest these meditations, sayings, quotes, and stories slowly, or as one needs to. It's divided into categories such as "Children," "All the World Is My Teacher," "Science and Technology," "The Blueprint of Creation," "Days Are Coming," "Making a Living," and "From Despair to Joy." Whatever one's problem, question, issue, or concern, advice or an answer is bound to be found here. Many of these tidbits of wisdom might also pleasantly surprise those who have a view of Hassidim as having a very pre-modern view of the world or of being dour, joyless, and very authoritarian and triumphalist. One doesn't even need to be Jewish to enjoy and benefit from this wonderful book.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Every Home.......2005-09-25

This book is uplifting and inspiring and will have you nodding in agreement and renewed awareness again and again. It is a must for every home.

5 out of 5 stars Bite sized gems of wisdom from the Rebbe.......2004-05-28

In a format accessible to readers of every background, Rabbi Tzvi Freeman has culled through over four decades of writings, letters, ma'amarim (Chasidic discourses), sichos (talks), farbrengens (Chasidic gatherings), yechidus'en (private audiences), and stories of the Lubavitcher Rebbe to present bite sized gems of wisdom applicable to the reader's practical everyday life and emotional/spiritual/material well being. With the exception of Rabbi Simon Jacobson's Toward A Meaningful Life, I doubt if there are any other English works besides Freeman's that so enable the reader of ANY background to integrate the Rebbe's wisdom into his own life. In his foreword, Freeman advises, "Take it little by little, day by day. When you need an answer, look here. When you need to come up for air, find it in the Rebbe's words. When life is getting tough and confusing, open up just anywhere and see what the Rebbe has to say. If you find heaven, bring it down to earth." Indeed, without being hyperbolic, this book can potentially change your life.

        5 out of 5 stars ~Very informative.....Very intuitive~.......2002-12-31

This is an awesome and informative book. I use it as an oracle and find it to be amazingly insightful and informative. Uncannily so. I think of a question, then open the book and read the passage where my finger is. Tzvi put his heart and soul into this book and it absolutely shows. It's an amazing book to have on anyone's bookshelf as it's such a fascinating read including many anecdotes about the Rebbe. I highly recommend this book to spiritual people of all faiths as you will find yourself going back to it again and again through the years.

5 out of 5 stars Dancing With The Rebbe.......2001-12-13

I was an early casualty of the faith of my parents. Not particularly religious themselves, they left me with a sense of the form of our religion, but no picture whatever of it's content. This wasn't their fault, it was simply very much the way we were in the 50's and 60's. My own spiritual needs left unmet by my faith of origin, I drifted from the time I entered college, first as an atheist, and then as almost every kind of theist one can imagine.

Eventually I found a place that suits me spiritually, in which I can dwell and feel no need to convert the unfaithful. From within this place, I have rediscovered a desire to spend some time reaping the wisdom of the religion I always took for granted, the one I was born into. This is not necessarily a comfortable journey for me but one it has been time to make for a while.

One of the things I had never come to understand about Judaism until well into college was the tremendous mystical richness of Judaism. What makes this mysticism special is its refusal to abandon the world in which we make our way. From Jewish mystics and rebbes we expect practical advice as well as inspiration. Rebbe Menachem Schneerson was for many years the premier spokesman for the Lubavitcher tradition of mystical Judaism. A man who valued humility, wisdom, affection, humor and a deep abiding faith.

Tzvi Freeman has taken the time to compile the essence of Rebbe Schneerson's meditations and teachings. This is simple, direct writing that would touch anyone, Jewish or not. Short sections that can be read a paragraph at a time and meditated upon at will. We are invited to take our beliefs out of the ivory tower and apply them in the world. The first recommendation for the spiritual treatment of illness is 'find a good doctor and follow his instructions.' The fourth is 'Increase your study of the inner light of the Torah.'

This kind of wisdom is good for all to use. I would recommend "Bringing Heaven Down to Earth" not just to crabby old men such as I, but to anyone who finds themselves sometimes a seeker or wishes to understand more of the depths of Judaism.
