Book Description
Previous editions of this book have helped over 100,000 students and professionals write effective proposals for dissertations and grants. Covering all aspects of the proposal process, from the most basic questions about form and style to the task of seeking funding,
Proposals That Work offers clear advice backed up with excellent examples. In the new edition, the authors have integrated a discussion of the effects of new technologies and the Internet on the proposal process with URLs listed where appropriate. In addition, there is a new chapter on funding for student research and a completely written chapter on qualitative research. As always, the authors have included a number of specimen proposals, two that are completely new to this edition, to help shed light on the important issues surrounding the writing of proposals.
Clear, straightforward, and reader-friendly,
Proposals That Work is a must-own for anyone considering writing a proposal for a thesis, a dissertation, or a grant.

The Only Proposal Guide You Need.......2002-12-30
As any graduate student will tell you acceptance onto a Ph.D program is largely based on submitting a successful proposal. Thereafter, as long as the researcher adheres to the proposal, graduation is virtually guaranteed. I am a Ph.D student who used the book to construct my proposal, which was summarily accepted by the research committee with minor changes. This appears to be contrary to what many Ph.D hopefuls experience. The book is expensive however I would highly recommend it. The proposal hurdle is well worth overcoming professionally.

Customer Reviews:
EXCELLENT - a must have at this price.......2002-12-13
I am an intellectual property attorney and law professor. I frequently have the opportunity to talk to entrepreneurs and individuals interested in start up advise. I ALWAYS recommend this book to people who are new to business plans. The book has some sample business plans in the back. Truthfully these sample plans are not all that good, but do provide some idea of the proper layout and format of a business plan. The reason I like this book so much is because of the detailed questions it forces readers to ask themselves. The majority of the book is set up like a workbook, and asks highly detailed questions that must be answered before writing can begin. These questions will also force the would be entrepreneur to think of and address a series of questions that many first timers would forget or not even know to ask or consider. This book is probably not for people who have been through the process, but for those who are doing it themselves and/or doing it for the first time buying this book is money well spent!
Not great.......2001-07-11
This book is far from complete. It has some very basic information about creating a business plan, asks you pertinent questions regarding creating your plan, and has 11 pretty poor examples.
I originally bought the book for a Business Plan Writing Class. It was a new book for the instructor and he abandon using it after the second week. It does not provide details in any area of business planning, and though it asks you questions to get you thinking in the correct way, does not provide guidance on how to answer the questions or what areas are important for different types of plans. Furthermore, the questions are not structured in a way that actually helps you formulate a useable business plan. The “101 questions” remind me to a employment application or high school written exam.
One of the reasons the instructor selected the book was for the examples. Upon closer examination however, they are really bad business plans that do not provide the depth required in the "real world." The plans are very simplistic. They might pass for someone getting an SBA loan or for internal management use, but a VC or other sophisticated financier would immediately throw any of these plans away. Even the formatting of the plans are bad; they look like they were written on a typewriter twenty years ago!
The book offers little to no advice on how to write your plan for different target audiences, what elements are important for different types of businesses, and because its examples are so incomplete, they give someone without prior exposure to business plans a false idea of what your financier is really looking for. ...
Interesting Book.......2000-02-12
It has been a life saviour and taught me to write a Business Plan in a very easy and lucid manner.
The best "how to" manual on business planning.......1999-06-15
I have read dozens of books on business planning and this is by far the best. I have encouraged all of my clients to read this book and they have all benefited from the information. Hazelgren writes clearly and with great business sense. Covello's financial examples are also helpful.
Excellent book for any size of company.......1999-03-22
We used this book by Hazelgren and Covello to spark new planning processes for our company with 66 branches nationwide. Excellent material!

Customer Reviews:
Great for the Entepreneur.......2007-08-13
This book is exactly what the title describes itself as: a theory and method of creating a one page proposal. It's best suited for the entepreneur pitching venture capitalists. I got some ideas from it, but wasn't as helpful as I'd hoped for what I needed. One thing I'd have liked would have been a job aid/chart with the section titles and brief highlight of what to include.
Cut through the clutter. Get you proposal noticed and read........2007-08-07
It took just 2 hours hours to read. The instructions are simple (not simplistic) and easy to follow. The prescription will help you get your thinking clear. The one pager will get your message read and noticed. Decision makers - who are normally inundated with unstructured requests for their attention and support - will appreciate the format.
A range of examples show you how the concept has worked for the author and others.
A perfect solution .......2007-03-02
I stumbled upon this at the Chicago Public Library. After reading it and returning it I didn't think much of it. For some reason, however, it stuck with me.
After Amazon delivered it I remembered why it stuck with me: the concept is perfect for putting down just the parts of an idea or project you need to remember and those you need to convey. It is perfect in its simplicity.
I use this format extensively and find that it helps both me and the reader stay focused on the key points. I highly recommend both the method and the book. This, Tom Sant's Persuasive Business Proposals and Powerful Proposals by David G. Pugh and Terry R. Bacon may be the only books on proposal anyone needs!
Professional Proposals in One Concise Page!.......2006-12-12
Well, I'm done writing 10-15 page proposals that are just glanced thru. The One-Page Proposal provides a methodology to concisely present your complete proposal on one page. It saves you time in the proposal process and provides your potential client with a very focused proposal. I rate this one a winner and am now using this exclusively for client proposals. It works and it saves time!
The 1-page concept is good, but this book is not so good..........2006-11-10
...unless you have very little business writing experience. The 1-page concept is valid, but this book and its examples are unimpressive (and sometimes dull, naive and self congratulating). Still, it might be worth a quick read for some of you, which is why I'll give it 3 stars. Note: I probably should have given it 2 stars since some of these other reviews are so over the top positive that to me they are not credible (I almost think they were written by shills).

For the past 4 years working in an Investment Bank I've read many business plans.
Don't expect too much from this reading. I'll recommend it just to beginners.
Highly Recommended.......1998-12-31
A very consise and well written guide. An excellent reference to have at your side while writing a business plan. I find it extremely useful. My only complaint is on the poor graphics in the book, especially since the author repeatedly stresses the importance of graphics in a business plan.
A good book for a novice starter.......1998-03-15

Customer Reviews:
Shipley Proposal Guide Review.......2007-05-11
The Shipley Proposal Guide was handed out at all of the Shipley workshops I attended in DC: Writing Winning Proposals, Managing Winning Proposals, and Capture Management. Bob Winslow (recently retired from Shipley) was the presenter for the workshops I attended; he is one of the most experienced proposal professionals in the country. Bob was involved with the development of the latest version of the Proposal Guide.
The Shipley method stresses the use of "systems" for new business development and their philosophy carries over into the Proposal Guide. The firm has helped hundreds of their clients write proposals during the past 15 or so years. They took the systems approach and developed the guide.
Overall, the Proposal Guide is EXCELLENT. I use it not only when I'm writing or managing proposals for clients, but also as a resource when preparing sales and marketing presentations, press releases, and newsletters. You won't be dissatisfied. The guide is worth much more than the asking price.

Models of Proposal Planning & Writing illustrates, in intimate detail previously unpublished, an integrated process of planning and writing persuasive proposals. The grantseeker will see the questions that the authors asked of themselves and those asked of sponsors before they developed a complete grant application. Grantseekers will read the actual proposals the authors submitted to private and public sponsors, including paragraph-by-paragraph analyses of the key features that made them persuasive. The authors provide the reader with a verbatim examination of reviewer comments and grant award notification letters they received back from the sponsors. As a whole, these annotated models serve as a springboard from which grantseekers can begin to develop their own fundable proposals.

Solid Info for Grantwriters!.......2005-07-27
This book offers specific examples, models, and step-by-step instructions on how to write all kinds of grants, from local and federal government programs to grants from private foundations and corporations. More than 300 Web sites are described, as is the use of search engines to develop better proposals. The authors also present scores of concrete writing examples and time-saving tips from successful grantseekers. (summary by South Texas Library System)
The author, Miner, has an online newsletter (Grantseeker Tips) as well, that I've subscribed to for years. Her advice is very practical and to the point. You can't go wrong with this book to guide you.
The one to get for foundation and NIH grants.......2005-07-02
The general advice provided in this book is invaluable. After reading it cover to cover, I still revisit the main sections every time before writing an important grant. There are key bits of knowledge provided that will serve you well, and like EB White's "Elements of Style," Miner and Miner can be recommended without hesitation. Finally, this book is much more useful than both the "Dummies" grant writing book and "Foundation Center" guide.

Among these outstanding writers/presenters are: Don Kracke, an advertising and marketing executive whose private sector proposals have resulted in millions of dollars of business from more than 30 major U.S. corporations Carol Geisbauer, who runs a tiny, community-based local organization and gets more than 20 out of every 25 public grants funded each year simply by following her "technical/political" format in approaching RFPs Jay Abraham, one of the few proposal writers who specializes in cold calling and selling with "proposal/letters" In this book, these three proposal writers and 16 others show you that writing a proposal is more than just answering a request. It is obtaining insight into what the prospective client/company/government agency really wants. You'll learn: The advantage of the "laundry list" approach in private sector proposals How to get decision makers on your side before the decision The inside approach to the two most common proposals submitted to government agenciesRFPs (Request for Proposal) and RFQs (Request for Quotation) How to plan and prepare the graphics, format, style, and language of a written proposal The ideal length and content for a verbal proposal and when you should make one The psychology, format, and language for internal/external proposals
