Book Description

Hailed by Architectural Digest as one of the top 100 designers and architects today, Bill Stubbs has designed penthouses, vacation retreats, and country mansions around the globe from Acapulco to Moscow. In this lively, irreverent memoir, Stubbs recounts the extraordinary, exasperating, and often hilarious adventures in his stellar career.

Illustrated with more than 150 color photographs of the spaces Stubbs has transformed, the book details the activities and thought processes that went into some of his most spectacular projects. These include the metamorphosis of an abandoned country dacha into a baronial mansion in the Ukraine, the renovation of a 100-year-old schoolhouse into stylish apartments for senior citizens in Newport, Rhode Island, and the project that inspired the book's title, a Houston penthouse designed around the color red, which caused his impulsive client to fire him over the phone. (Of course, when the client saw the finished apartment, he loved it-to the point that Stubbs had trouble convincing him to abandon the color in subsequent renovations.) This entertaining volume is a rarity, a design book that people will actually read. AUTHOR BIO: William W. Stubbs, founder and head of his own Houston-based firm, designs interior spaces, both commercial and residential, all over the world. He has been named to "The AD 100," Architectural Digest's list of the world's top designers and architects. He lives in Houston, Texas.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing candor.......2006-11-10

This is such an entertaining read as well as a look at a wide variety of decorating styles. I first became interested in this decorator (the only one I know by name) in Architectural Digest. These wonderful projects kept coming up in different months and so I started reading the articles that went with the pictures in the projects and discovered Bill Stubbs! He has a fresh eye for every client. He really looks and really listens. How unusual in today's self absorbed world.

4 out of 5 stars Know your rights!, and use them........2005-12-27

Too many people are completely ignorant of their rights in general. Employment law is no different. This book is not about how to be a good employee and not get fired, it's not about office politics, it's not there to hold your hand through that tough time. It is a book about knowing and exercising your legal rights as an employee. Learn how to protect yourself at work before you even get the job. I highly reccomend this book.

3 out of 5 stars GOT RIPPED!.......2005-06-25

The book was a great read for employment law; but when you think you have a case based on what you read in this book and get to the office and are charged $250 for consultation (1/2 hour)as he takes calls while meeting you, you start to feel a bit ripped off. All the info in the book that I thought made a case meant absolutely nothing when I went to meet this lawyer at his office. Before you consult, buy and read a couple of other books and get as much free consul as you can if at all possible...

5 out of 5 stars A helpful book at the right time for my career..........2004-10-15

As a successful college football coordinator, I realize that my job is always under public scrutiny. Regardless of the fact that I, and the team, am highly successful and that we make our yearly trip to the Holiday Bowl, there is always the outside chance that people are not satisfied with my performance. With my ability to scheme. With my ability to adjust during a game. With my ability to develop talent. With my ability to utilize talent. But I digress.

The previous review noted that the book was only good if you are planning to sue. I don't see this as a negative. In fact, the threat of a lawsuit is certainly a reasonable way to maintain one's position. Also, I've discovered that it's very important to have photographs of one's superior in, shall we say, a "compromising position". I got that idea from the movie "The Firm", and it's allowed me to maintain a career track that is highly enviable.

I appreciate the advice in this book in response to getting fired, in particular the section dealing with "how to protect your pension". Why, just last year I gave my good friend Bull some advice on this very subject which turned out to be a huge help for him. He's now sitting out on his bass boat, fishing while collecting an amazing pension.

The part of this book that I disagree with is entitled "the right way to resign your position". There is no right way and no right time to do this. First, make them fire you. Screw them if they can't see your brilliance. Second, make sure you have those compromising photographs! These ensure that your boss complements you publicly, like "Greg is doing the best job in the country".

In all, this book was very helpful to me, and I plan to use many of these strategies to ensure proper compensation if I am fired. Oh, and I'll publish those pictures too. Which should serve as a reminder - never fall asleep in a strip club in Mexico if your friend has a camera! Ah ha ha ha ha ha!

3 out of 5 stars Not my Bag, Baby.......2003-06-30

Only useful if you're planning to sue. Very depressing if you're searching for emotional support/help only. Do not recommend it overall. Too negative.

5 out of 5 stars Emotional strength during a tough job crisis.......2001-07-20

During a restructuring phase at my company, i had the heavy feeling of not knowing if I was going to be next on the ax list. I stumbled across this book at a bookstore, not really looking for it. Reading the title, I said to myself that this is what I need right now. Very good solid stable advice from a seasoned pro in this field. Knowledge is power and this book gives you an extra kick of power.

4 out of 5 stars Hands-on advice on how to deal with being fired.......2007-04-16

If you're in danger of losing your job, Richard C. Busse provides advice about how to turn things around and improve your relationships at work. If you do lose your job, he explains how to cope with termination, negotiate the best settlement and understand your rights. He answers many questions about U.S. employment laws and how they differ from state to state. We recommend this book to anyone who fears he or she may be "fired, laid-off or forced out" of a job, now or in the future. Managers, supervisors and human resource professionals will also find useful tips about legal issues and conducting performance evaluations properly, so they can avoid the risk of wrongful termination lawsuits.

Everyone should have read this, just in case you run into one of those weight thowing around bosses. I hadn't read it when my inccident happened but i called in my Union President, after paying for 4 years worth of dues they better do something. It said to do this in the book, so i was right on it. But, there is alot of other stuff in it, that is just good to know

5 out of 5 stars Anyone working should read this book.......2006-12-15

Regardless of your current employment status, one must read this book. It is excellent guide on what to do to protect one's best interests when it comes to salary negotiation for the new job, or severance negotiation when a job is lost. If you are in the rush and want to just skim the book read the tips at the end of the each chapter and that will have to determine if you need to read all of it or some of it. My advice however would be read the book cover to cover because you could only wish to have Richard Busse is your employment lawyer. If you are 40 or older you definitely want to read this book and better yet, keep it in your library for a refresher reads in the future.

4 out of 5 stars From "bummer" to "I'm back!".......2007-03-24

This is good guide for handling a career set back and positioning yourself to move forward with confidence. A mix of no-nonsense advice and practicle exercises, I found that Richardson's method added value to my situation. I STRONGLY recommend doing the exercises, especially in the chapter on moving forward. Some of it can seem a little odd (like writing a scathing letter to folks in your past job, then burning it as a form of release from the past) but they actually do help. Finding yourself in the job hunt, especially with little or no notice, is an unpleasant thing, and Richardson helps you look at the many facets of this situation and then develop your plan for moving forward to your next position.

4 out of 5 stars Good place to start.......2006-02-15

As a career consultant, I'm on the lookout for books to recommend to my clients. Career Comeback passes the test.

One preliminary note: The cover refers to failed business ventures, but this topic does not appear to be covered. Publishers, not authors, usually write cover copy, so we can't fault Richardson. I believe you'd have to make major adaptations to these 8 steps if your business goes south.

The most valuable information comes in the first half of the book: dealing with being fired. I agree with just about everything Richardson says. He's one of the few authors to recommend sitting down with a financial planner right after you talk to your family. His advice on dealing with an employer after being fired is very sound. And many will find the exercises useful: Review what went wrong -- in and out of your control.

So mostly I like Steps 1-4 of Richardson's 8-step program.

Step 5 ("Find out what matters to you") is a good start, but I think Richardson underestimates the degree to which we identify with our professions. "You're still the same person" strikes me as one of those irritating, useless bromides. Many of us will be branded as an "ex" for a long time and will have difficulty losing that identity, no matter how hard we try. And the experience of losing a career we love can change us in deep ways.

"One role is temporarily diminished while another moves into its place..." won't help those who identify strongly with a profession. And your other roles will be affected by job loss. Friends view you differently. You may not be able to afford the activities you enjoyed with your friends and family. Some arts organizations actually encourage high-level volunteers to resign when they no longer hold jobs.

Steps 6 and 7 - "Find your next move" and "Find your next job" -- are necessarily oversimplified because they're single chapters on topics deserving a whole book. "Go back to an old job" is possible but not likely, and you'll be in a one-down position. And downshifting to a smaller company probably won't hurt your career - but it might.

I disagree most strongly with the author's sections on testing. If you're unemployed and money is tight, skip the tests. Some of my clients have paid hundreds of dollars for tests that proved useless. At mid-career, they'll almost always show you're best qualified for the job you have. And most career tests are so unreliable they shouldn't be used for guidance. Read Annie Paul's book, The Cult of Personality, before taking out your checkbook.

The section on hiring coaches and counselors needs to be expanded. Counselors typically are trained in counseling processes and tests, not careers. Many "career coaches" have little experience with careers, except their own. Some offer expertise; others have "training" in asking questions and helping you "find the answers within you." And you have to decide if you agree with value systems like "law of attraction."

The fee range quoted for coaches and counselors is low. I think you should expect to pay a minimum of $125 - $250 for a single session, which often includes follow-ups. I do know of some coaches and counselors who offer lower fees and frankly, you get what you pay for. Packages cost less and (as the author correctly says) are more helpful.

And to choose a consultant, I would not follow Richardson's suggestion to rely on credentials. Instead, I recommend reviewing websites, brochures and other writing. Invest a few bucks in an e-book before signing up. Coaching organizations do not "verify skills" or enforce any quality control. I once tried to report an "accredited" coach's blatant unethical conduct. Both the coaching school and the ICF refused to get involved, let alone take the coach's name off their "recommended" lists.

Step 8, "back on track," is quite good, especially sections on buyer's remorse and admitting you made a mistake. I would add that a return to work, following a long break or layoff, could be the perfect time to start working with a career coach. Learn from experience and make a good first start.

Finally, I don't think we ever make a "complete comeback." We simply make progress. And, as I noted earlier, we're different. And we should always keep a safety net ready.

Despite these quibbles, I'd recommend this book to clients and website visitors who need to go from Setback to Comeback. You could do a lot worse.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource for anyone seeking a new position.......2004-09-01

Perhaps you were downsized out of your last job. Maybe your previous employer went belly up. Or it could be that you were in business for yourself and your company failed due to unanticipated market changes. Whatever the reason, you find yourself in the unenviable position of seeking a new way to earn a living. You may have been living paycheck to paycheck and need to find a new gig immediately. Or you may be fortunate enough to have saved a few bucks for a rainy day so you have a little time and space to work with here.
Whatever your situation, Bradley Richardson has written a book that absolutely deserves your consideration. "Career Comeback" was really the end result of the author going through just such a crisis himself. I have read a few of these books over the years and let me assure you this is clearly the best of the bunch. This book is a cornucopia of ideas and useful advice. He points out many of the useful resources all around you (family, friends, church, agencies etc.) and encourages you to make use of them. I was particularly pleased with the dozens of websites that Richardson recommends that are sure to aid the diligent job seeker in his/her search for that elusive "ideal" situation. Whether you are looking for work in the manufacturing or retail sector or are a seasoned executive who was a victim of "downsizing" this book will prove invaluable in your job search. I will be integrating much of what I have learned here into my own job search. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely on target!.......2004-01-22

Richardson's advice hits home for those impacted by the severe downturn in the economy. Not a sugar coated job search guide to writing a resume, etc., etc., but a roadmap to get on with your life and manage the emotional impact of putting your career back together successfully!

5 out of 5 stars Career Comeback.......2004-01-22

How refreshing to find a book that deals with how being laid off effects your entire life and the lives of those around you. So often you are led to feel that it is your fault that you were laid off, that there was something you should have done to prevent it. This book helps you to see that even though bad things happen sometimes to good people there are ways to get back on your feet through self motivation and the support of your friends and family. I highly recommend this book if you have been laid off or know of someone who is considering a new start.

This book told us long ago that managment in the United States must change and such changes recommended in the book have not taken place. Author Ewing tried to tell us that management based on fear and expendibility and power will fail. Now there is growing research to tell us this is so. Ewing's book was way ahead of its time.

      4 out of 5 stars Mom, You're Fired.......2007-09-07

Tina is embarrassed by her mother's actions and clothes. Tina wishes her mom was like her friend's mom. A new girl moves into the neighborhood, and Tina tells her that her mother is really her babysitter! One lie leads to another. Tina finally goes too far and a mother/ daughter discussion takes place. A great book for parents and children.

      5 out of 5 stars Mom, You're Fired.......2006-05-05

Cute, and hardly a brain bender, Mom, You're Fired is a good title for the 9-12 age group (more 9 than 12). Every one of us will recognize ourselves in Tina and some of us will recognize ourselves in her mom.

Tina's mom is so embarrassing. She doesn't dress as nicely as Melissa's mother. And she sings - in public! Tina's lunches even embarrass her. So when she meets a new girl, she tells her that her mother is her babysitter and Tina begins a trail of lies she has to struggle to maintain. How it unravels is fairly predictable, but it's worthwhile.

Nice message without being too soap-box-ish. Robinson does an excellent job of telling a story with a moral without beating the reader about the head with it. This is the first book I've read by her, and I look forward to finding more.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining and insightful.......2005-03-14

This was a big hit with me when I was a boy, showing that it can reach across gender lines to appeal to boys and girls who can empathize with the idea of being embarrassed by one's parents.

The action follows the misadventures of Tina Steele, who is so ashamed of her sometimes-wacky mom that she tells her visiting friend that the woman in her home is actually her babysitter. This and a handful of embarrassments lead to a climax that teach Tina that lying to her friends is not a solution, and that her mother has feelings, too.

The writing is straightforward, and the encounters have a certain amount of humor in them, but are not played up for big laughs. This is mostly a novel that will help children to think of their parents in a new way, without coming off as preachy.

      4 out of 5 stars Mom, You're Fired!.......2002-03-07

The book, Mom, You're Fired!, by Nancy K. Robinson, is an exciting book about the relationship between Tina and her mother. A lot of children go through embarrassing mothers and this book tells about how Tina deals with it.

Weather it's at home, at the grocery store, at a parent-teacher conference, or even when a friend is over, Tina's mother has ways of embarrassing her. She dresses weird, she sings in public, and does all other kinds of typical embarrassing-mother-things. I think that Tina can be selfish at times, and cares too much about what other people think. Her mother is the opposite. She'll do anything for Tina and couldn't care less about what people think of her. I think her mother is a very caring mother but at the same time does her own thing. Tina's best friend Melissa, is rude, selfish, and stuck up. I didn't like her at all. Tina has some problems with her friends, and her mother is always there for her. What I liked best about the book was how Tina dealt with they way her friends treated her. I didn't like how Tina treated her mother though. It was really rude. This book teaches a lot about treating your parents with respect. The ending was typical but I liked it.

The does a good job with keeping the reader interested and not giving too many details. The book was fairly easy to understand and didn't have big words at all. Because of the plot, this book is great for ages 10-16. I would recommend this book because so many kids can relate to it.

From the author: Being fired as a physician executive is the dark side of burgeoning opportunities for health care leadership. The risk of termination is 20 to 40 times higher than for clinicians. Several approaches to calculating and predicting the probability of being fired are presented, based on a recent survey of American College of Physician Executives members and the author's professional observations. The survey identified several factors that are associated with a higher risk of being fired. These include structural conditions like organizational type and position, as well as factors ranging from being the first person in a new or unclear job to working for an entity with two or mare years of significant financial losses. Persistent conflict with a boss or board member--concerning personal style or organizational strategy--is another commonly present danger signal. Additional predictive variables include recent termination or departure of a bass, recent merger, and widespread organizational downsizing or re-engineeri ng. This article suggests strategies to better predict high-risk situations, to prevent termination, and to increase the likelihood of your professional and personal well-being when termination becomes inevitable.
