5 out of 5 stars Succinct and practical.......2007-10-18

The beauty of this volume is that it takes a vast quantity of research on how people learn and organizes it in a way which is readable, practical and accessible for educators. The authors distill the findings of numerous studies into three key principles of learning: (1) Teachers must work with student preconceptions and prior knowledge, (2) Teachers must teach in depth, providing multiple examples of the same concept and (3) Teachers must help students develop metacognitive skills so that they can take control of their own learning. These principles are developed and expanded with numerous references to research and practical illustrations. It should be noted that the book is predominantly about conceptual understanding and does not spend a lot of time on how we learn skills such as playing a musical instrument or learning a language. That said, it is an extremely important contribution to discussions of pedagogy and if the advice contained in the book is heeded by teachers, curriculum writers and policy makers, it has the potential to transform many shallow classroom practices into powerful tools that will enable students to develop deep understanding. The accelerating pace of change in the 21st century means that the ability to transfer skills to unfamiliar situations as well as the skills of lifelong learning have become more important than ever. The principles contained in this book will help us prepare students for a changing world.

If you are going to be a teacher, this is a great book to read. Detailed and easy to read, it helps prepare you for what to expect and what will be expected of you as a teacher. It makes it easy to understand how children learn and what are the best teaching strategies to use to teach them as individuals.

5 out of 5 stars How People Learn.......2007-03-08

My academic advisor at the University of Washington's iSchool suggested I read this along with "Team-Based Learning". I never thought I could get so excited about a book on learning from the National Research Council! Highly recommended to anyone with an interest in research regarding neural processes, teaching /learning, psychology, and the natural desire to learn.

Thank you to the authors and contributors for this book! I can hardly wait to see what they find out next!

2 out of 5 stars Clear as mud.......2007-01-19

I am amazed at the high praise of this opauely written book. I find I have to read sentences over and over to figure out what the actual point of the sentence is. "Edu-talk" and a prolix writing style (by committee? a camel?) makes this anything but "reader-friendly." Good luck slogging through it.

5 out of 5 stars Great knowledge base for those who want to know "how people learn".......2006-11-05

I'm currently a 1st year student in an ed psych doctoral program. This is the main textbk for a class called "Cognition, Instruction, and the Design of Learning Environments: Introduction to the Learning Sciences." It's written to be more reader-friendly, which is nice --- especially since we are also assigned plenty of other academic journal articles that can be harder to wrap your head around!

Great book. The authors are all reputatable folks in the field. It's the perfect starting point for someone like me!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Kindergarten Resource.......2000-03-30

As a Kindergarten teacher, I have found the Starting Out Right book to be one of the best resources that I have ever used in my classroom. The text is very easy to read and very user friendly. The activities are great for any teacher making the changes in education. I only wish that I had found this book years ago. I would recommend this book for any teacher who is teaching reading strategies. In fact, my district is purchasing this book for ALL kindergarten teachers for our personal resource library.

      Book Description

Authoritative yet accessible, Neurons to Neighborhoods presents the newest evidence about early brain development and how children learn to speak, think, get along with others, and regulate their behavior. It examines the effect of the surrounding context-family, child care, community-within which the child grows.

Are the early years a time of vulnerability or resilience? To what extent are our future prospects constrained by how well we navigate them? How can we get all children off to a good start in life? When should we worry? The committee provides a framework for approaching such vital questions and explores how scientists know what they know about childhood development.

This timely release will be important to all those who care about children and their families: policy makers, educators, researchers, program administrators, advocates, journalists, caregivers, and parents.

      5 out of 5 stars super terrific.......2006-10-24

This book is a staple in the early childhood mental health field. It represents everything good in the promotion of social-emotional development in our society. Creating neurobiologically friendly environments for young children is a crossroad our society faces in an effort to have a positive impact on the mental health for our time. Implications for risk and resilience research contributions are included.

5 out of 5 stars Review of From Neurons to Neighbourhoods........2006-08-04

I purchased this book, because I am doing a Graduate Diploma in Maternal & Child Health in Australia. Many of our lecturers were taking quotes from this book and referring to Jack Schonkoff's remarks contained within, pertaining to new evidence on myelination and the importance of interaction and stimulation of small children and the relationship between this and brain growth. It is easy to read and I am confident that both the lay person and health professional alike will glean valuable insight. I find myself constantly referring to this book and know that this will have an effect on my future practice as a Maternal and Child Health Nurse.

      4 out of 5 stars Great resource!.......2006-03-27

An amazing breadth and depth of neuroscience and its implications for how we treat children. Must reading for anyone wishing to get beyond prejudice and rhetoric to the core of what needs to be done in public policy to protect and preserve childhood in modern America. Should be 5 stars, but now a little dated, although references are excellent and it's not hard to follow the themes into the most recent research.

      Book Description

"The Program Evaluation Standards is a 'must-have' book for anyone responsible for reviewing evaluation proposals, planning and conducting evaluations, managing evaluation projects, or judging the merit and worth of evaluations once completed. For experienced practitioners, it provides a set of values and principles by which to guide successful practice, that is, a set of criteria that determines whether educational evaluations are trustworthy and fair. The Standards sets expectations of the design and implementation of educational evaluation for all practitioners in all types of educational arenas, even those involved in social programming endeavors. For newcomers and those less experienced who may be responsible for commissioning and using evaluations, the Standards supplies a useful framework of generating a list of questions to raise about any evaluation plan or final report in an effort to assess its pros and cons. The book is an invaluable 'how-to' resource for graduate students venturing out into the field, and it instills a sense of what it means to be a responsible evaluator. For clients or consumers, the book offers advice on what they should expect of an evaluation. In my work setting, all new hires entering our evaluation unit are immediately given a copy of the book, a practice that I would recommend to any group that provides evaluation services. "Each standard is explained in just a few pages using a format that makes the book easy to read and navigate through. It is crisply written with user-friendly language. . . . The extra examples provide a greater range of applicability, thereby strengthening the book. . . . There are newly added navigational and cuing devices that improve the ability of the reader to scan and move through the book more effectively. . . . The Standards will continue to be an important sourcebook for scholars, practitioners, and administrators working in educational program evaluation. "The second edition provides evaluators and users of evaluation with practical guidelines for planning, implementing, and judging evaluations in educational and social programming. This new edition is further strengthened by more diverse illustrative cases, a supporting bibliography, and guidelines that reflect some of the changes that have occurred in evaluation over the past decade. Its wide appeal for seasoned practitioners, as well as for those less experienced, suggests that the second edition will continue to make a significant contribution to the preparation and practice of evaluators and administrators working in educational and social program evaluation." --Journal of Educational Measurement "Although they were developed primarily for the field of education, these standards can be applied to a broader range of evaluation settings. . . . The Program Evaluation Standards offer a pragmatic, 'how-to,' user-friendly guide to program evaluation. . . . We found that simply reading the standards for evaluation is an excellent training exercise for legislative program evaluators. Basing formal staff training on the evaluation standards may be more effective. Actual implementation of the standards in ongoing projects would constitute a sound basis for ensuring quality and uniformity of program evaluations. We strongly encourage you to at least explore these standards for use in your organization." --Linda Triplett and Kathleen Sullivan in NLPES News Aimed at providing a guide for evaluating educational and training programs, projects, and materials in a variety of settings, these 30 standards were compiled by the Joint Committee from knowledge gained from the professional literature as well as from years of experience by educators and evaluation specialists. The 30 standards are categorized into four groups corresponding to the four attributes of sound and fair program evaluation: utility, feasibility, propriety, and accuracy. Each standard is accompanied by an overview of intent, guidelines for application, common errors, and one or more case illustrations of the standard's application. The book also includes information on how to use the standards in terms of the major tasks of a program evaluation: deciding whether to evaluate; designing an evaluation; collecting information; analyzing information; and reporting, budgeting, contracting, managing, and staffing an evaluation. Anyone who commissions or conducts an evaluation, or who uses evaluation results to improve education and training in schools, universities, medical and health care fields, the military, business and industry, the government, and law will find these NEW standards a "must-have" tool. Sponsored by The Joint Committee on Standards for Educational Evaluation consisting of: American Association of School Administrators American Educational Research Association American Evaluation Association American Federation of Teachers American Psychological Association Association for Assessment in Counseling Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development Canadian Evaluation Society Canadian Society for the Study of Education Council of Chief State School Officers Council on Postsecondary Accreditation National Association of Elementary School Principals National Association of Secondary School Principals National Council on Measurement in Education National Education Association National School Boards Association

5 out of 5 stars All the evaluation standards in a nutshell.......2007-01-04

This was a required text for a graduate course I was taking, and it will make an good addition to my professional library. The authors have compiled a concise review of each evaluation standard with the rationale behind each standard into one tool. It is not an in-depth analysis of evaluation standards or the history of the development of the standards. This book's strength is in its layout and brevity; I can find exactly what I am looking for when I need it.

      Book Description

How do people learn? Exciting new evidence from many branches of science has significantly added to our understanding of what it means to know, from the neural processes that occur during learning to the influence of culture on what people see and absorb. This book examines these findings and their implications for what we teach, how we teach it, and how we assess what children-and adults--learn.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Teachers should know how people learn.......2002-04-12

Perhaps this may be preaching to the choir, but the people who are reading this book probably already know how people learn. The people who need to read this book are the bad, burned out teachers who fail in their role as educators. With that in mind, I believe that this book has a lot to say to many. Unfortunately, what it said, I already knew. Research done by John Dewey and Howard Gardner demonstrated a lot of what this research has to say already.

Perhaps the most interesting part of this book dealt with misconceptions. Every students that walks into a classroom, walks into the room with misconceptions. Teachers give the students facts that dispute these misconceptions, but rarely replace the misconceptions. It is only when teachers make students active in disproving a misconception that the students actually internalize the truth. This is where the American educational system fails miserably. For example, most teenagers still believe impeachment means removal from office. When you prove Bill Clinton was never removed from office, they can actually see evidence that disputes their misconception. How else could we have proven the Earth was not flat before space travel? Demonstrating through learning which required thinking to prove a misconception wrong.

      Book Description

Project Sponsorship—which includes case studies, checklists, and action plans—shows how project sponsors and project managers can develop the skills they need to manage successful projects. Randall L. Englund and Alfonso Bucero—experts in the field of project management—have written the definitive guide for educating all stakeholders in the nature of project sponsorship. They describe in detail the responsibilities of the project sponsor, from communications and liaison, selection and training, problem solving, mentoring, and feedback, to the review of project execution. The project sponsor and manager learn how to negotiate effectively with each other and the project team to achieve their commitments.

This book explains well what project sponsorship is all about. It covers general project sponsorship concepts based on PMBoK, and also introduces sponsorship concepts for client-based projects.

I really like about the book that it is written for both the experienced project manager and the curious novice project manager. It is easy to comprehend without sounding trivial. 5 out of 5 stars superb book.......2000-04-02

This book gave a comprehensive overview of the issues facing national science standards. Not only did it go over the history of standards, but it delved into the complex issues of teacher participation, community support, and school support equipment. I really enjoyed the organization of the book. it was divided into very coherent and logical arrangement, which enabled easy understanding of the complex issues even to a first-timer like me!
