You've got a hot idea for a new dot-com, and you're itching to join the folks who regularly show up on CNBC and at the Lexus dealerships in Silicon Valley. But you also know your odds of big-time success are about as long as Bill Gates's position in MSFT. What do you do? John Nesheim, an adjunct professor at Cornell's Johnson Graduate School of Management, who has personally structured over $300 million in new-venture deals, lays out the step-by-step skinny in High Tech Startup. Incorporating some two dozen case studies spanning the technology spectrum, he presents info specific to this industry that will help you get from concept to IPO. It begins with a 14-phase schedule itemizing time requirements, necessary assistance, typical participants, major costs, main risks, and desired results for each step. It then details all the critical stages (i.e., forming the company, preparing the business plan, assembling the team, dealing with venture capitalists and other funding sources). Nesheim focuses on practical strategies that should certainly improve your chances, but don't start prepping for that on-air interview with Mark Haines just yet: Only six out of 1 million high-tech ideas, he notes, ever become successful companies that go public. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
The phenomenal success of the initial public offerings (IPOs) of many new internet companies obscures the fact that fewer than six out of 1 million business plans submitted to venture capital firms will ever reach the IPO stage. Many fail, according to start-up expert John Nesheim, because the entrepreneurs did not have access to the invaluable lessons that come from studying the real-world venture experiences of successful companies. Now they do.
This revised and updated edition of Nesheim's underground Silicon Valley bestseller incorporates twenty-three case studies of successful start-ups, including tables of wealth showing how much money founders and investors realized from each venture. Acclaimed by entrepreneurs the world over, this practical handbook is filled with hard-to-find information and guidance covering every key phase of a start-up, from idea to IPO: how to create a winning business plan, how to value the firm, how venture capitalists work, how they make their money, where to find alternative sources of funding, how to select a good lawyer, and how to protect intellectual property. Nesheim aims to improve the odds of success for first-time high-tech entrepreneurs, and offers an insider's perspective from firsthand experience on one of the toughest challenges they face -- convincing venture capitalists or investment banks to provide financing.
This complete, classic reference tool is essential reading for first-time high-tech entrepreneurs, and entrepreneurs already involved in a start-up who want to increase their chances of success to rise to the top.
Download Description
Make no mistake: even with all their potential for meteoric success, high tech ventures are synonymous with high risk. Fewer than one out of every 47,000 Internet business plans submitted to venture capital firms ever reach the initial public offering (IPO) stage. Many fail because the entrepreneurs did not have access to the invaluable lessons that come from studying the real-world venture experiences of successful companies.
Now they do. The book C-Cube Microsystems President Bill O'Meara calls "a must read for all high tech entrepreneurs" has all the hard-to-find information that start-ups need to rise to the top. High Tech Start Up presents a classic, step-by-step strategy for making a solid plan and securing multi-round financing. Author John Nesheim -- a premier start-up veteran, having single-handedly structured over $300 million in new venture deals -- provides more than twenty-three case studies that reveal how readers can modify their strategies to fit their particular objectives.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for entrepreneurs considering a start-up!.......2007-09-06
Book gives a good overview of the process, timeline, and who is involved. Great insight into what venture capitalists look for, equity ownership and dilution, and how to select key advisors (i.e., attorney, banker) on the start-up team. It is an eye-opener to help you know what to expect in terms of how long it will take to get established and the likelihood of being bought out or reaching IPO. Definitely recommend.
A course on entrepreneurship .......2007-05-15
The book is slightly dated and was published at the height of the tech bubble, but don't let that detract you from picking it up - `High Tech Startup' has volumes of invaluable advice. John Nesheim covers the entire lifespan of a startup: from finding an attorney to start the company, to picking an investment banker to do an IPO. Of course, the scope of the work also limits the amount of information, but it gives you enough to find what you're missing and to continue your research. The case studies and suggestions from seasoned CEO's were especially useful - experience is cheapest second hand, and there is plenty of it in this book. `High Tech Startup' is a business course I should have taken years ago (and most school don't offer), highly recommended.
Full of information.......2007-03-23
I enjoyed this book, in face I have taken a lot of the information and put it into our business plan for a new start up. Though the information is dated it still holds... At the end of the day, business is business.
We are using it as our bible, and I will come back in a few months and tell you how our efforts go.

O verwhelming Info.......2007-01-13
The book is so informative, it so hard to stop reading when the book is fun and full of ah ha and hmm. The author give a precise info on how the start-up company can obtain VC funding. Most of the reviewer are right about their comment on this book, it should be the bible of start-up company.
Start Up Business Bible.......2006-01-30
I lead the technology center for an up and coming online payment services company. To say that High Tech Start Up has been very helpful in our growth is truly an understatement. My boss lugs around his copy of the book and constantly quotes from it, calling it his bible. The book has guided him in positioning the company in the market accordingly and has helped him in making informed decisions. I would recommend the book to anyone wanting to carve a niche in the high tech industry.

Don't Buy it!.......2007-06-09
I was extremely disappointed with this book. This book is full of Mr. Kennedy's and his buddies adventures in business but has very little for a person starting up a business. Don't waste your money on this book. I found better information on the internet.
Invaluable advice for the entrepreneur.......2007-05-16
This is an excellent book that gives practical, invaluable and enlightening advice to entrepreneurs. It covers a wide range of relevant topics including such areas as the start-up process, marketing the business on a small budget, cash-flow forecasting, resource gathering, business plans, legal entities, financing, e-commerce/e-business and insurance and it does so in a simple and remarkably engaging manner.
Joe Kennedy's life as a `successful entrepreneur is fascinating and inspiring, and his first class education coupled with his wealth of entrepreneurial success, give his advice and insights the maximum credibility. He reinforces his message with interesting, witty and enlightening stories. The book is an invaluable resource to any person who is either currently involved or thinking about getting involved in any type of new venture.
The book is an excellent companion that contains a wealth of useful and helpful information and ideas on starting a small business and ensuring that it is viable and successful that is well worth having.
Solid Entrepreneurial Manual.......2005-09-11
When I signed up with an Internet company they sent me a copy of this book
as some kind of promotion but it's well worth the full retail price.
Sometimes "sign up" gifts turn out to be not so good but I do get a lot of
mileage out of Kennedy's new book. Many entrepreneurs (like me!) are very
good in one particular area, say e-commerce, but are not so aware of the
many other facets of running a business - and that's why this book is great.
I am an Internet kind of guy but "The Small Business Owner's Manual" or
"TSBOM" as they call it has a lot of relevant info on building and promoting
web sites and e-stores, however there are also has several chapters of very
solid material in the other dimensions of running a business - like forming
the entity and "hiring and firing" and minimizing taxes and my favorite part
is when the book explains a businesses' "unique selling proposition."
I keep it on the shelf just behind my desk and whenever something comes up
this is often the first place I look. Even though I am happy to jump to the
Internet, this book is better and faster than most searches, since it's
focused on small business owners and not on selling something and it is
solid information and not a lot of obvious things you already knew.
PS The book also has an Internet site, [...], where you can ask the author questions - which he does answer - and there are free downloads of most commonly used business documents and agreements.
It's nice to get a coffee cup as a promotional gift but this book is about
operating a serious business. If Kennedy ever writes a new version I'll buy
it.
EXCELLENT REFERENCE BOOK.......2005-07-15
The Small Business Owners Manual is a practical addition to any office. I didn't have to read the whole book and map it out to make it useful. Using the Contents page and the bold face paragraph titles, I can go quickly to the subject of interest and get crisp, meaningful information. It's the best I've seen - not bulked up with wasted words. You can order it with a few keystrokes and put it to use within minutes after receiving it.
Great How-to Book for Guys Like Me.......2005-07-01
I operate a media-related business and let's just say I like dealing with
people more than some of the nitty-gritty details of running a business.
Since my business is growing I needed advice in many different areas like
hiring employees or contractors, getting my accounting finished, finding an
attorney/partner and all of the different taxes that must be reported and
paid. Believe me all of this can be a headache to those who just want to
concentrate on a business they are passionate about, so I like this book
because it gets down to details without going through a lot of obvious or
useless information. The author (Joe Kennedy) also provides a lot of
comments on how these things really manifest in the real-world. For example
he explains about how some taxes should be reported and paid exactly on time
to avoid problems, but he gives examples of others where business owners can
fudge a little. This alone can pay for the book many times over.
I also like how the information is organized. Everything is explained in
macro terms as each section begins, but then heavy-duty details follow. So
you can open up to just about any section (for example payroll taxes or
medical savings accounts) and get right into it. Finally get ready because
the book is thick with information but the writing style makes it easy to
follow. I recommend reading one chapter per day over two weeks and this
will allow time to think about all of the new information overnight.
The only problem I saw with the book is that the chapters on Hiring/Firing
and Taxes were maybe a bit too long but who can complain for getting too
much information? This is not one of those "feel-good" cheerleader type
business books, but instead offers lots and lots of practical information
that you will need every day.
The web site [...] is also useful especially
as they add more and more documents to the document downloads section.
Readers get free access to the goodies on this site.

The Ultimate Training Workshop.......2007-01-26
This book has everything one needs to lead successful workshops and training programs, from agendas to evaluations. It gives strategies for designing workshops to meet the needs of the learners. It reviews models and theories of best practices. If you are in the business of providng workshops or training this book is an excellent resource. It has everything you need.
A mixed blessing.......2001-04-13
This is the most useful Training book I've come across in a long time. I find myself referring to it often. However, it is in desperate need of editing. It could easily be cut down by 1/3 - and that would make it much better.
Did anyone edit this book?.......2001-01-06
It is tragic to find wonderful research compiled into a book wrought with spelling, grammatical, and sentence structure errors. Unnecessary comments by the author makes reading even more tedious. A new edition with a good editor would make this book priceless.

A must for people in the workshop business!.......1999-03-05
"Ultimate" and "comprehensive" are the key words in the title that set this handbook apart from the others. They say it all - over 600 pages of checklists, diagrams, models, and examples covering every topic of the workshop business. And you are given permission to copy pages for personal workshop use! When paging through the book I began to play a game - he must have missed something! Well, whatever it is, I'm still looking...

Excellent book!.......2004-02-05
This was an excellent book to get a high-level overview of what it takes to start a business. This book wasn't written to be a one source guide. It was written to give you all of the important details and procedures of starting a businees, without all of the fluff. If you want to start a business, but have no knowledge of how to do it, then I recommend this as your first book on the subject.
Don't buy this book.......2002-04-06
This book is useless and a big waste of my $... that I paid for it. While the book is some two hundred pages, the last hundred consist of appendix which could be summarized in less than twenty. The first hundred pages is so completely elementary in nature that I cannot conceive of anyone actually benefiting from its content.
Was interesting,not enough details.......1999-01-29
The book could have more focus on specific jobs instead of a vast variety

Customer Reviews:
Review of a review.......2000-11-20
I recently started a very successful business. This handbook was invaluable to me in getting started. Therefore, I would like to reccommend this book to others and correct a statement made by Mr. Doty in his review on this page. Mr. Doty objects to the sparse style, and he is entitled to that opinion. However, as his example he unfairly implies that the section on The Business Plan consists only of four sentences, when in reality that section is five pages. With that statement he denigrates the whole book.
The term "handbook" in the title connotes brevity and lack of great detail. Clearly it was not intended to be a textbook. As a handbook, it gives what it promises.
Mr. Doty would be well advised to read more carefully, and not to make misleading statements in online reviews based on a cursory perusal.
Clear and Concise.......2000-09-28
This may not be the textbook for the seasoned entrepreneur, but, for the novice considering starting a business for the first time, it is an easy-reading guide to the important issues that need to be addressed if the venture is going to be successful. Congratulations to the author on a clear and concise approach to a complicated subject!
Very little meat, no potatoes.......2000-08-22
A "handbook" this isn't. Scanning the Table of Contents one would expect a plethora of fresh insight and guidelines on starting a business. Unfortunately the content is sparse at best. Ninety percent of the subjects are confined to one page of large double-spaced print and several consisted of only four ludicrously common-sense sentences. For example, the section entitled "Why a Business Plan?" consists of four sentences with the last one being "Do not neglect this important step." The only redeeming value is that the chapters titled "Insurance" and "Company Policies" remind the reader of a couple of important issues that are often missed by other "handbooks". Sorry, but this book is not for the serious start-up entrepreneur.
Excellent resource!.......1999-07-08
Thanks for demystifying the often scary process of starting a business, Mr. Sundt! Practical common-sense advice based on years of personal experience, a quick worthwhile read for entrepreneurs of all types.

I bought the 2nd edition of this book and found it to be absolutely priceless. Book Description
As we move into the 21st century, many of the old rules no longer apply. In today's challenging business world, the person who runs his company by the seat of his pants often winds up on the seat of his pants. Today, while many companies are struggling just to keep afloat, savvy business owners are quietly experiencing explosive growth. They are successful because they are following a specific set of prioritized procedures.
Few entrepreneurs seem to grasp the disarmingly simple premise - that, all too often, failure is the result of not having developed and executed a fully integrated strategic plan. Without a clear marketing strategy, even the best ideas in the world are doomed to failure. Most would-be entrepreneurs start their businesses for all the wrong reasons. They go about it in a disorganized and unsystematic fashion. By impulsively hopping from one opportunity to another, they blame their lack of success on circumstances beyond their control. They don't have a clue! They fail to understand that their odds of being successful would greatly improve if they would only take the time to follow a specific well-defined blueprint. The Solution!
You don't need a lot of theories. What you do need is a specific step-by-step blueprint to operate your new business for maximum profit at minimum risk. "The Only Business Start-Up Guide You Will Ever Need" contains the most profitable and valuable strategies ever developed. It will create a paradigm shift that will change your belief systems forever.
Hundreds of the most successful marketing techniques ever conceived have been compiled into over 400 pages of extraordinary strategies. You will be amazed by the volume of inside information contained in this exclusive guide.

Customer Reviews:
Gives very general info ... not worth the money!.......2006-10-17
This book gave the most basic and general information about opening a child care service. It claims to cover both centers and family day care, but really only discusses centers in any depth. This is NOT the book for anyone looking to open a family day care. It covers information that people should already know anyway (except that it does write about how many mops and trash cans centers should have). Please don't waste your money on this one. Steelsmith's book is MUCH better - you will get a lot more out of that one!
