5 out of 5 stars Entrepreneur Magazine's Ultimate Small Business Marketing Guide.......2007-07-17

Ultimate Small Business Marketing Guide boasts over 1500 marketing tips and tricks. This helpful information is divided into sections related to everything from research and planning through dealing with employees and improving customer service to advertising and creative selling. Each tip is also labelled with symbols that indicate approximately how much money it would take to implement this plan, if you can do the work yourself, if professional services are available in this particular area, as well as additional online or print resources that may help in this regard.

This book is thick and quite complete with ideas that are explained in good detail. The information is extremely well organized and easy to understand, flowing naturally from planning through sales. There are also lots of good checklists and surveys to help keep the entrepreneur organized and focused. Most of the information provided focuses on brick and mortar businesses. Nonetheless, a good deal of these notions can easily be modified for virtually any business brick and mortar or online.

4 out of 5 stars Plenty of Good Ideas.......2006-03-10

This book is not a cover-to-cover book about marketing theory, but rather a large series of examples that cover many marketing categories and topics. While I can't say I use a lot of these ideas everyday, many are good and for me, the best benefit is reading a wide variety of ideas in general. Marketing is more creativity than science in my opinion (once you identify a real market with some measure of certainty), so reading such a varied collection gets my mind thinking in new directions. That alone made the book worth it for my money. YMMV.

5 out of 5 stars Sales 101,201,301,401.......2006-03-04

Very comprehensive from a topic standpoint! May not completely discuss a topic, but it covers them all. It also provides a tremendous amount of great ideas, which was what I purchased the book for.

4 out of 5 stars Great source of marketing ideas for any organization!.......2006-02-24

I originally checked out a copy of this book from my local library. However after reading it cover to cover, I wanted to purchase my own copy. The author comes up with some really good and practical marketing ideas. I used some of the ideas in the book to come up with a couple of marketing pieces for the local non-profit organization that I am currently volunteering with. The book does a good job of telling the reader what to do, but it falls a little short in telling how to do it. Overall, it is a good book to have in my business library.

5 out of 5 stars Entrepreneur's Ultimate Startup Directory by Stephenson.......2005-12-01

The directory teaches how to begin a start-up business. The basic steps are as follows:
- get started and avoid analysis paralysis
- decide on a title for the company
- start-up planning and implementation
- decide on whether or not it is home-based
- deal with legal dimensions
- do franchise research
- research the market

Sample businesses cited by the author are as follows:
- mobile computer training
- online wedding consultant
- 800 call center
- proposal writer
- used computer sales
- computer upgrades
- virtual tours
- leatherassociation.com
- second hand clothing store
- used wedding gowns
- education day care centers

The acquisition is well worth the price for the information content provided. The presentation is well-organized and easy
to read.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Useful.......2006-03-31

My father recommended this book to me as he has been a small business owner for over 20 years. I set a pack of flags next to me when I first started reading this book to mark any information that I could actually apply, as I went through the process of opening my own law office. There are so many flags sticking out of this book, that it looks like a beautiful bird's tail! I learned things about small business loans, free resources such as how to sign up for trade publications, and much more. The entrepreneur profiles were inspiring, and helped me to stay grounded and enthusiastic through both the exciting times and the struggles of opening my own business.

1 out of 5 stars useless.......2006-02-26

I really don't understand why there are so many positive ratings on this book. It is useless to me. Full of high level superficial suggestions, lack of knowledgeable insights. I don't think I need someone to tell me that it is important to research the market, and to know your competitors. A lot of places in the book says "talk to your account for this and that...", or "go to www.somewebsite.com...". If I have to refer to somebody else or go somewhere else for any in-depth topic, what do I buy this book for???

5 out of 5 stars A REAL Guide to Real Estate Investment.......2007-06-11

This has to be the best overall guide to real estate investment I have read yet. Brad Sugars puts concepts into place that seem (and are) simple compared to many other books of this type. Through his explanation of Wealth Wheels, Brad makes sense out of many of the other books you might read on Real Estate Investment. Use this book to craft your investment strategy, and the techniques described by other writers will become much clearer. A must read for any current or potential investor!

4 out of 5 stars Good Starting Book.......2006-08-09

An easy read with several key tips for the novice investor and many tips and principles are in bold text for you if you if would like to recall at a later date. I would definitely recommend reading this book.

I gave 4 stars because I would have liked more explanation or analysis with financial discussions, especially since getting the financial analysis right is key. For instance, there are tax rules associated with property investing and it's not clear what some of these inherent rules are which were used in financial analysis. For instance on page 35, it calculated a $1,615 after tax cash flow. I guess one must assume that even though you don't pay any federal income taxes on your investment property you can actually get a refund back from the government. If this is true, it's a pretty important point and should be considered being clarified and highlighted.

In addition on page 35 it says "let's assume it grows at just 5 percent". Then the lower table used an analysis of 6%. I think this might be a typo, but if not this too is not clear to the reader why there is a difference between the figures.

Also, he mentions to buy income producing properties with an interest only loan. However, it's not clear if one should do this all the time. For instance when you know the rates are going up do you still keep it in an interest only loan? When do you pay it off or refinance to a fixed, if ever?

Also, the financial cost of real estate agent fees were not calculated, and I suspect may make a difference between a buy, hold, or sell decision. There might be a reason for this but again it's not clear.

Overall it's a great book for beginners such as myself, and I would recommend this book along with a follow-on book which can go into detail on the financial aspects of real estate investing.

4 out of 5 stars Sound Principles for a Beginer in Real Estate.......2006-06-26

The Real Estate Coach: A Story of Real Estate Investing Success, by Bradley J. Sugars

"Remember this fact: How happy would you be if your grandmother had bought 10 properties 80 years ago in downtown Los Angeles, London, Sydney or Tokyo?"

"Investing is about your future- your family's future- it's not about tomorrow. Making money tomorrow is what your job or business is for; investing is about 3, 5 or even 10 years from now."

"Keep this one principle in mind: you don't have to be rich to invest, but you have to invest to be rich."

This book will give someone who is thinking about investing in real estate the push they need. It's a cute - quick story about a middle aged couple who are seemingly well off, yet want to build assets and net worth for their future and happen to be introduced to a real estate "coach" or mentor who explains the benefits and strategies involved with investing in real estate.

A particularly interesting concept was the "Property Wealth Wheel" which is simply a way of looking at or bunching different types of properties together so the quick profit from a flip will fund further property purchases and the cash flow from some properties will help cover others that don't have cash flow but are expected to appreciate at a faster rate.

By Kevin Kingston, Author of, A 20,000% Gain in Real Estate: A True Story...

5 out of 5 stars A must read book.......2006-06-21

Reading the Real Estate Coach is a MUST if you are thinking of investing in Real Estate.

It is so easy to read and contains very useful strategies to help you make smart investments.

I definitely recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading.......2006-06-19

Why didn't I read this book before I purchased my first property...I would have saved thousands.

Brad's simple to understand yet powerful property negotiation and development techniques are benefitial to both the novice and professional developer.

You will learn powerful techniques to buy the right properties at the best possible prices in any market.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great tool to get you started!.......2007-01-09

This book is a great rescource for anyone who is looking to start a professional pet sitting service. It's easy to read and has lot's of good information.

5 out of 5 stars pet sitting business.......2006-11-04

I thought the book was excellent. I loved her style, not too dry, very humorous. It was a very quick easy read, and had great ideas for starting a new business. Lots of help and references. The best book I've read on the topic. I'm brand new in the business and I based my business planning on her book. I also had the opportunity to meet the author, and she is a great person, very helpful. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Pet Sitting for Profit.......2006-07-22

This is the Third Edition of an excellent book on the business aspects of pet sitting. Author Patti Moran is one of the pioneers in this field and she provides a wealth of useful information. Be aware that this information is primarily for business aspects of pet sitting - guiding you through everything from phone lines to forms. It does NOT provide information on pet care - assuming that you are already somewhat competent since you are itnerested in this field.
Filled with "real life" experience, Ms Moran covers office procedures, insurance, advertising and marketing.
The chapter on Getting Started will be extremely useful for someone starting up a pet sitting business with a work force of one - namely you :) Much of the rest of the book is geared for the pet sitting business that has expanded to multiple employees. Still, that is an area where many dog businesses fail - right when they expand.
This book is an excellent resource for anyone with a dog business. Much of the businees savvy advice could apply to any dog themed business.
This book is well worth its price for the budding entrepeneur

2 out of 5 stars An okay guide -- but not the ONLY one to have in your arsenal.......2006-02-27

First, a full disclosure -- I run my own pet-sitting business and I'm a happy, paid member of Patti's organization, Pet Sitters Internaitonal (PSI). She's a good business woman who had the sense to get out of the industry and create alliances to help those in the industry. Second disclosure, I run an organization geared directly toward helping petsitters start and run a successful business so that they can enjoy their life, work with great clients and retire happy.

Now, onto the review. I bought this book about 6 months after I started sitting full-time. I had already bought, read and devoured Lori and Scott Mangold's book.

This book was a disappointment to me -- it had been touted for so long by so many that I know and respect as THE BIBLE of pet-sitting. So, I guess I was expecting fireworks and drumrolls. None of that is here.

It's basic. It's not quite a how-to and definitely not the Complete Manual for Professional Success. But then, a complete manual would need to be much larger and more expensive.

There are alot of ambiguities as noted by other reviewers and I really wish there was a more extensive Appendix listing places to get information regarding licensing, insurance, employees vs ICs etc. for each state.

But, there's still a good overview of the business here. So it's worth having in your library -- I just wouldn't depend on this as my sole guide to starting and running a successful pet-care business.

3 out of 5 stars No longer the GURU of pet sitting - many others now........2005-09-10

I get the impression that Patti wrote her book and her information after being in business for many years. She is knowledgeable about the business. But her materials are often based on the premise that you have lots of start-up funds (and plan to afford an accountant, web site designers, trademarking, S-Corp designation, etc) and LOTS of employees. The fact is most pet sitters just don't use these things in the beginning, and having a reasonable budget is important the first year. And for those of us in the business now, computers are a HUGE factor in streamlining our business. She doesn't say much about these in the copy I have.

The average sitters doesn't start up with a trademark or employees, and most start as sole proprioterships (much less paperwork). Her Pet Sitting For Profit book does mention that most of these things are optional so that's good.

Other info can be rather ambiguous. For example, under "Business Licenses" it says "check to see if you need a business license". It would be nice if she could specify why and the details (some states require you to be licensed for particular industries, and others don't. Others require registration of your busines name by city, or state. Others require you to get a sales tax #. All this is important, and you should understand it in detail) and more info on where to go.

Other debateable topics (like magnets on your cars or advertising on t-shirts) aren't listed as something you need to think about in depth (for instance, magnets on your cars can be a deterrent to some clients who don't want it highlighted that they may not be home). I couldn't find discussions on the big questions, like should I collect payment before or after the sit (maybe I just missed it??? Have it in front of my but still can't find anything about payments?).

So if you are looking for a book that will help you get thinking about the right topics and you plan to have lots of employees, maybe start here. The book is very affordable.

And you have to kind of breeze past all her advertisements for her other availabe items. General consensus from us sitters already in the biz is that they are overpriced.

I recommend "The Professional Pet Sitter" by Lori & Scott Mangold. It's geared more towards beginners, and I really like the organization much better. Their form samples are limited, but can get you thinking in the right direction.

Then check out forms and other info available on Ebay for "Pet Sitting". You can find great, complete form packs as low as $5, and full startup kits for under $40. Try searching Google also - some great stuff out there that can be VERY helpful. Always see a sample of forms before you buy - and check out feedback to be sure you are getting something good.

Edited 2006 to add: The version of this book that I have is fairly old. There is a new version coming out 5/2006 that will hopefully be more current. (?)

3 out of 5 stars Too much "renter" not enough "expenses" space...could be improved.......2007-09-21

I bought this book along with "How to rent Vacation properties by Owner".....THAT book is great, but for me, I was hoping for a better organizer. My main disappointment is simply not enough pages for expenses, but like over 50 pages, (thats over 200 renters) for your renters. Perhaps that is OK for those who rent nightly or weekly, but for me, who rent my vacation home for one month minimum, and usually for 3 month at a time, this was off balance.
I have many expenses that I need to keep track of, utilities, mowing, cleaning,etc,etc......for me, I need WAY more then the 6 pages they give for expenses.....I would think any owner would. Pockets and tabs would have been nice, but the main thing is it needs WAY more pages for expenses.....6 pages is not enough.

5 out of 5 stars World Ventures, Dream Trips, Vacations.......2007-03-01

This book was very thorough and easy to read. If you're looking for a dream vacation also check out, "World Ventures, Wayne Nugent".

5 out of 5 stars Must-have for anyone renting "by owner".......2007-01-16

This organizer, along with it's companion book "How to Rent Vacation Properties By Owner" are indispensible. I used to rent my vacation home through an agency. Last year they got me 2 rentals for the entire winter season for my ski home! Plus they took almost 30% for commissions! Thanks to these 2 books I'm doing the renting myself, and I couldn't be happier! I've had every weekend booked so far this season. And I've already earned enough to cover 80% of my expenses for my home for the entire year. My home pays for itself thanks to Christine's books, and yours can too, with a little effort! Don't waste any more money on an agency - do it yourself with these ingenious books.

3 out of 5 stars Vacation rental Organizer.......2007-01-04

I do think that she could have explained how to organize it in a clearer
manner.
Also, the the examples in the explanation page are not in large enough print.
I do use it but I need another book to put my leases and calendars.
It could use "at a glance" monthly and yearly calendar

5 out of 5 stars This Book Got Me On Track!.......2006-05-17

First I bought "How to Rent Vacation Properties By Owner". This gave me the confidence to self-manage our own beach house. The rental organizer was just what I needed to keep track of the various stages of the life of a rental period from inquiry to deposit return. The only thing I have added is an item under check list for "changed availability calendar". This book goes everywhere with me.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Place to Start.......2002-04-19

I used the acid test for considering how well written a technical book is about my business - I gave it to my wife when she asked me some questions one day.

I have had this book on my shelf for several months and found it extremely valuable in doing some quick general research and in exploring a variety of concepts dealing with planned giving. Written for the small shop (in my opinion) that needs to develop a planned giving program, this is a well-written and easily read book covering A to Z.

Topics start with what is planned giving, move through defining and discussing philanthropy, setting up a planned giving program (first steps), pitfalls to avoid, marketing planned giving and even sample gift instruments. These are but a few of the chapters in what I think is an excellent starting point for someone new to planned gifts and how to promote them (or even a pro looking for some fresh ideas).

Ah yes, my wife. For her, this was a bit of a liberating experience - she now has a good grasp of what I do. She can converse with friends about the business of planned giving very comfortably with a much better understanding of the basics.

2 out of 5 stars Pricey Book! Save Your Money and Time!!.......2006-02-26

This book was a complete waste of money and time. I've been in the direct marketing/mail business for 13 years and I'm always looking for new angles to better my business. This guy doesn't seem to know what he is talking about and it makes me wonder if he really has any experience in the mail order business at all.

Here's the deal: If you are serious about making money in mail order or direct response, don't get any of these waste-of-time books that "claim" to show you the business. The ONLY book that I've ever read that can (almost) exactly mirror exactly what I do for my $7-million per year business is a book by Vincent James called The 12-Month Millionaire which you can get on eBay (or type in on a search engine) since it's not a regular published book. The only thing I wouldn't follow in that book is the low priced items he recommends selling like wrinkle creams and weight loss pills (stick with information courses of $199+ with mail order as a RULE, ALWAYS). Lower end products of $99 or less will cause you to lose money in mail order EVERY TIME!!

2 out of 5 stars Outdated.......2003-02-02

This book is outdated for the 21st century. The basics are there and in great detail but most of the information is useless for today.

3 out of 5 stars Good, if old fashioned, basics.......2001-12-28

Whilst the core business ideas of this book are very sound and there is a lot of very useful and specific information I can't help feeling that it's a bit dated. It needs a big revamp to include the whole Internet world. I also felt that the copywriting examples, whilst they probably still work, are representative of the 50s and 60s rather than the 21st century.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT book for entrepreneurs and beginners alike.......2000-03-21

This book gives you an exact idea of what you can do to expand your business, if you an entrepreneur or give enough information to a fresh person to start his/her own business. This is a must buy book for people thinking of becoming self employed or those who have been in business for a long time and need to know the trends of the business world.

2 out of 5 stars Commonsense advice, but author's heros sell dubious products.......1998-07-25

If you believe Cohen, all the people who ever hit it big in "mail-order" did it selling some sort of "how-to" books (Hmmmmmm . . . . .). There is some useful information here, but it is not a guide to becoming the next L.L. Bean or Amazon.com. If you have studied marketing and business in general, you don't need this.

4 out of 5 stars Southern Bus Boy.......2006-06-13

I have been wanting to open a restaurant for several years now. I work in a seafood restaurant in a northern Mississippi town, and I don't know, I guess serving people is just in my blood.

I am a big Howard Cannon fan. I do wish that the book was a little more detailed, but I believe he really loves the business. If you want to open a restaurant, buy this book.

I'd also recommend Running a Restaurant for Dummies.

5 out of 5 stars A must for new and veteran restaurant operators.......2005-08-07

Mr. Cannon covered all issues necessary to help with any suprises in the restaurant business. I continue to use it whenever problems arise.

5 out of 5 stars Readable book with common-sense and valuable expertise.......2005-07-17

I have no links of any kind to any party involved in producing or selling this book. I came to this book with only low-level restaurant work knowledge, but with the idea I might set one up. So far it's only an idea. Though I have run businesses, the management and ownership side of the restaurant business is new to me.

I know that if I go into restaurants I will be competing with experienced operators. I will need to try and catch up quickly (or lose money and make errors). One important lesson my business experience has taught me is that advice from those in the know is pure gold.

So, considering a restaurant business, I bought this book.
In my opinion it is first-class. It's well-written, clear, comprehensive, quite entertaining, and the points he makes are good solid management points. It's just what I was looking for.

3 out of 5 stars Basic Knowledge.......2005-03-31

I was expecting a little more detail than what this book delivered. It mostly goes through basic business information that can be found on the internet. I thought the timeline, forms, and employee scheduling sections were useful. However, I guess since it is a "Complete Idiot's Guide," I should not have expected it to be more than basic.

3 out of 5 stars Just the Basics.......2003-09-05

For someone coming in with no knowledge at all of the restaurant business, this is not a bad general guide.
I was a little disapointed however at the terse treatment the author gave to money processing in the restaurant.
There are many types of restaurant computer systems(POS) and lots of systems to accept checks and credit cards. Since in most restaurants these payment forms far outdistance cash, it would be helpful to include some of the basic credit card processing provisions and information about terminals. Merchants are misguided and ripped off all the time on check and credit cards sytems that are not proper for the specific restaurant. The topic deserves a chapter, not just a few paragraphs.

Book Description

Many fine books exist that explain to authors how to self-publish. Make Money Self-Publishing shows them how to make money doing it. Readers are introduced to the publishing world and its jargon in Chapter One, Self-Publishing 101. Then the following chapters introduce readers to a variety of small publishers. They range in age, marital status, physical location, subject matter, and favorite marketing approaches, but they are all profitable. Readers will discover how to start their business on a shoestring if necessary (Chapter Seven), sell tens of thousands of cookbooks (Chapter Three), or plunge into the world of e-books (Chapter Fifteen). The appendices supply contact information for printer and self-publisher associations across the country, recommended books, useful web sites, and more. Particular topics can be found easily and quickly by referencing the comprehensive index.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars pep talk by a self-publisher.......2007-04-11

This book lacks the details of publishing. No how-tos, no business aspects of publishing, or what to publish. It's a compilation of talks with minor writers.
And as you guess, the author herself is a self-publisher.

Better read "Complete Guide to Self Publishing" by Tom Ross and Marilyn Ross. You get much more with less money.

Technical note: For those who are not familiar with publishing industry, books without discount at Amazon are usually not commercially worth to publish. They include small quanity and self-published books. Commercially worth means publisher can commit because they think they can sell minimum print run of 3,000 copies which is industry standard.

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting especially for people already publishing.......2006-03-15

Very good real-world stories from small independent publishers. In most cases, the publisher saw a need for a book -- on touring New Jersey, or hiking, or buying a horse, or serving educational niches -- and began with the premise of wanting to provide information and ideas not already "out there." What inevitably follows is a collision with the reality of a crowded and brutal marketplace, and "Make Money Self-Publishing" shows the creative ways each publisher pursued to create a livelihood.

An earlier reviewer found the book depressing -- I found it inspiring. I would say to anyone with a pipe dream of making a fortune from their book to take a good look at this and other books on self-publishing, learn that it is a battle royal even to break even, and to instead pursue publishing as a way of spreading new ideas. Hopefully Suzanne's book will demonstrate that this may lead to you making a livelihood as well, but only if you go into this field with your eyes wide open.

3 out of 5 stars Not really a "learn how" book.......2005-12-28

If you are considering self publiching then this is a nice book to have, especially if you are a fan of real life stories. The 14 author/publishers all tell their stories without hype. Most took a very long time to receive a return on their investment and explain but also show that after years they are now all getting paid regularly without having to do an awful lot. I like that the book is realistic in this sense.

Certainly, there are a few tips and pointers throughout but this really isn't a "how to" book. It is a collection of real life stories that you may be able to pick some pearls of wisdom from.

1 out of 5 stars Don't read this book if you don't want to be discouraged!.......2004-04-16

I thought this book was going to be inspirational with tips and Do's and Don't from other self-publishers. This book made me rethink me self-employment and self-publishing dreams.
Almost every one didn't make any money for years and the book was depressing and boring.
It show the reality of working for yourself, which will cause some people not to take risk.
Read it and refund it.

4 out of 5 stars Fourteen Real-world Examples........2004-01-09

Despite the somewhat pedestrian title Make Money Self-Publishing has significant impact on the reader. Foutreen successful self-publishers tell us their stories--their failures as well as their successes--what worked and what didn't. For those interested in the self-publishing field this is fascinating reading.

The stories are varied. One author updates and reissues a single title year after year; others have extensive backlists. Some publish only their own work, others have parlayed their success into publishing the work of others. The abiding lessons are: there is no single formula for success, rules are made to be broken, and often the key element for success is discovered by accident.

Prefacing the fourteen tales is a chapter called "Self-Publishing 101" which outlines succinctly much of the material told in greater detail in the other books reviewed in this collection.

Ironically it is the tale written by an E-book publsher that highlights the continuing need for paper books. Through that story we found an Ebook publisher well-suited to our needs. Internet searches had not come up with this information.

We are very high on this book. Libraries should order one.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for ideas, good insight to businesses.......2007-04-10

This book has some great summaries, about 6 pages in length each for a variety of businesses. Discussions center around best-case scenarios and the author offers bits of interviews from those successful owners and how you can apply it to starting your business. A suprisingly realistic view of quite a few different business options.

I really would like to see an updated version of this book since it was published in 2000 and the market has changed for many small businesses.

5 out of 5 stars New edition fully updated.......2000-10-20

I saw that the first two reviews listed here are for the old edition of this book! The new edition, just released last month, is completely updated. Here are just some examples covering virtually every established and emerging field, including the Internet: Internet marketing, designing web pages, ecotourism, gourmet food shop or producer, take-out restaurateur, adult day services provider, play gym operator, home health care provider, personal chef, dating service provider, B&B innkeeper, craft wholesaler, "whodunit" producer, party planner, and the list goes on and on. Each entry gives a complete behind the scenes look and relays success stories from real entrepreneurs, with verbatim comments and must-know secrets about every aspect of running the business. The introductory chapter gives you all the nuts and bolts information about how to succeed as an entrepreneur with topics like the positive character traits of entrepreneurs, and info about generating capital, business plans, finding lawyers and bookkeepers and bankers, marketing, working from home, finding and keeping employees, and more.

2 out of 5 stars Published in 1992, this book is outdated........1998-12-18

While the author has some good ideas for start-up businesses, she is behind the times. Keep in mind it was most recently published 6 years ago. Read it to get ideas, but don't count on it to reflect current trends. According to the author, typing, word processing, old school computer languages, and pagers are all in hot demand.
