5 out of 5 stars Very useful self help book.......2007-01-13

I have read around 100 self-help books and would, unhesitatingly, count it as one of the best (if not the best). It gave me lots of food for thought. I think Jane should get onto the Oprah show. It merits that kind of attention.

5 out of 5 stars No more waiting.......2006-07-11

If you have thought to yourself or said out loud, "I just can't do this anymore" this engrossing, entertaining and practical approach to identifying the obstacles to living a vibrant and fufilling life is for you. Jane Straus provides tangible examples and exercises to help anyone who is really ready to address their 'endurance'. I have been acquainted with this author's work for many years and have seen impact in myself and others of her incisive and to-the-point remedies. She reveals her own inspiring story and those of many of her clients with compassion and humor, and invites the reader to undertake this exciting, and sometime painful path to a fuller, richer, more thriving life.

5 out of 5 stars An Inspiring, Powerful Read.......2005-11-30

5 out of 5 stars Practical advice that can help you impact your daily life immediately.......2005-11-28

I found this book very easy to read and, as strange as this might sound, I felt better immediately after reading it--like I really could change specific aspects of my life NOW if I was willing to see myself truthfully. The author uses personal experience, and the experiences of people she has coached in her professional life, to demonstrate how to stop enduring people, things, etc., in your life and start choosing to live a life that is aligned with your higher truth. While some books require extensive exercises and cumbersome companion workbooks, this book is much less threatening and provides thoughtful questions (she titles these "Time In") for your own consideration after she provides important "food for thought". One thing in particular that I appreciated about the author's approach is that living your life to the fullest is a process that can be started today, no matter what your situation. For example, one of her chapters is titled, "Daily Tonic for an Extraordinary Life" and she offers the following, "Living our truth cannot be for some future goal or noble end; our commitment to releasing judgment and limiting beliefs, practicing positive affirmation, honoring our emotions, and striving for win-win is the daily tonic for breaking free of our endurance." Wonderful stuff that I highly recommend to any reader!

5 out of 5 stars An empowering book that will take you in the direction of your dreams!.......2005-11-08

So all this time I've been "enduring," I could have been thriving! That's the lesson of "Enough is Enough!" by life coach and consulting expert Jane Straus, who tells us that just enduring life is no way to happiness.

In this powerful and truly empowering book, Straus shows how we let our fears, limitations and beliefs lead us into a life where we are just going through the motions. Until we break the bonds of just "enduring," we cannot get to that marvelous place where we aren't just surviving, we are truly thriving, and this book is chock full of tips, tools and techniques for getting us there.

Using plenty of personal experience, plus that of clients she's coached to happiness and success, Straus takes us on a journey that begins by identifying the symptoms of endurance, which include not believing you have enough talent or time, ignoring your feelings, hoping things will change someday, distracting yourself with food or busywork, and more. Once we know HOW we endure, we can then work to change our habits and live a life with more integrity and authenticity.

The chapters help us to find ways to drop our "acts" and find our real inner drives, how to let our heart be free to tell us what it wants, how to forgive ourselves and others so we can move past the past, how to think outside of our comfort zone, and how to constantly find inspiration around us to keep us going in the direction of our dreams.

The author's use of her own personal journey and those of her clients really add so much depth and insight, and reading about how others reached their "enough is enough" point is inspiring and motivating. This is a book that can change so many aspects of your life, as it focuses on getting out of the "just getting by" mode and into a more proactive and enthusiastic way of being in the world.

"Enough is Enough!" is a book that will change the way you look at the life you are now living, and help you shape it into the life you've always wanted to live.

Book Description

To many in the world, the Christian faith is a set of rules and regulations. But Jesus himself did not teach his followers in sets of dos and don'ts; he taught them foundational principles to live by. These life principles, Charles Stanley says, are the simple truths that act as a compass for our souls.

You will learn:

Using examples from his own personal experiences, Biblical personalities, and case studies, Dr. Stanley demonstrates how these key life principles impact life in the 21st century-and how they make us, as Christians, different from those who live their lives according to preference, rather than principles.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Deborah's Review.......2007-09-26

Dr. Stanley is an excellent writer and this book is just as good as all his other books. It is a no-nonsense book about being a Christian and what is really involved. Satan is constantly pushing us to do things we shouldn't be doing and this book helps to recognize Satan's temptations and how to ignore those temptations. Dr. Stanley is truly a minister of God!

4 out of 5 stars When the enemy strike - Eph.6 .......2007-08-27

Recognize the assaults of the enemy. Negitive circumstances and troubles are not always from within -- there is a spiritual warfare -- the tactics used by Satan to taunt, confuse, slander and harm the Christian. The battle is unavoidable. Discernment is essential.

Ephesian 6:10 -17
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm, stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, AND HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, AND HAVING SHOD YOUR FEET WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE; in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take THE HELMET OF SALVATION, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

5 out of 5 stars When The Enemy Strikes by Dr. Charles Stanley.......2007-08-27

Into all lives storms will blow, Dr. Stanley uses his experience and wise counsel to explain the significance of these trials. How a change in our perspective can make all the difference, for a happier life.

3 out of 5 stars Resist the Devil, and He will Flee from You.......2007-08-26

People do judge books by their covers, and may even buy a book based on the cover, including the title. Therefore, one criterion I apply to writing book reviews is to consider whether the book fulfills what the title suggests the book is about. Charles Stanley's book WHEN THE ENEMY STRIKES is okay as far as the title goes: the enemy will strike the Christian, and the author makes that case convincingly enough. Where the author gets into trouble, however, is with the subtitle: "The Keys to Winning Your Spiritual Battles." Had he left out the word "The" then the subtitle would have been alright too, but as is, the title suggests a finality, completeness, that this book does not offer.

I find the following weaknesses in this book: 1) the author's theological, denominational bias is evident throughout, unnecessarily so; 2) scripture references are distressingly scant; 3) references to worldly ways of thinking (e.g. psychology) are distressingly plentiful; and 4) the author greatly underestimates the enemy, the wiles of the devil, rendering his advice potentially dangerous, particularly if taken as an end-all source of information on the topic.

I find the following strengths (some of which tend to counter-balance the weaknesses listed above, but not completely): 1) the premise of the book is that the enemy, the devil, *will* attack the Christian, and that is true; 2) there is purpose in God's allowing a Christian to be attacked; 3) there is no substitute for knowing the Bible, and the truth thereof, especially verbalizing it, is our best defense against the attacks of the devil; 4) the author emphasizes that we must not get into a debate with or argue with the devil about anything; 5) take everything to God in prayer, including asking Him for help in fighting against the devil; and 6) the Holy Spirit is alive and working within the Christian, to take them into an ever-deepening relationship with God.

On page 135 the author selectively quotes scripture regarding Samson's taking a Philistine wife, selecting only the scriptures that support his argument, but leaving out the truth in Judges 14:4 "But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the LORD, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines: for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel." Unfortunately, that omission tends to bring a shadow of doubt over the entirety of Charles Stanley's selection and use of scripture.

The book provides some sound foundational teachings about the topic based on scripture, but the reader should not stop with this book if he or she truly wants to understand and be prepared for spiritual warfare, both defensive and offensive strategies. By all means, do learn to deal with the Jezebel spirit, spirit of the apostate church in these last days, a major stronghold of Satan within the church itself, and one that this author does not even mention in passing.

I read a library copy of this book and was glad I had not invested in my own copy. Having said that, it was an easy (about one evening) and worthwhile enough read that I do not consider the time I spent in doing so to have been a total waste.

5 out of 5 stars Encouraging.......2007-05-12

Dr. Stanley is a very holy man who has obviously heard from the Lord about how to minister to us. This book has helped me more than words can say.

insightful and entertaining, this book got me thinking about the paths taken by so many people in my life, as well as my own.

4 out of 5 stars A Pleasent Surprise and an Inspiration.......2007-02-21

Never heard of this guy but saw the book in the store and after reading over it bought it and am happy I did.It is written in readable chapters with a focus on what the Author learned from the individual. I dont know of the guys radio show but it is centered around interesting people he met and is an easy, fun and inspirational read. If you like reading about interesting people and how they overcame their challenges then this is worth the read. Nice style and nice read.

5 out of 5 stars This is what everyone should be reading.......2006-12-16

I didn't know what to expect from the book or the author.

I saw the subtitle about lessons from 21 extraordinary people and feared it might be some exercise in genuflecting to celebrity. That is a most subversive notion in this day and age of conformity where aspiring to wealth seems the highest goal.

John St. Augustine's name didn't mean much to me either. I'm an east coast guy and though he was a succesful radio talk show host that was mostly in the middle of the country - plus, I'm not much of a talk show guy. I find the radio stuff so jarring and controversial that it leaves me uncomfortable. Would that his show had been on everywhere.

Then I cracked the spine. What a book. It is bold - it respects its readers and doesn't try and sell them on three ways to achieve success or 2.5 ways to live a get thin and achieve a lasting tan - because it challenges readers not to go to the comfortable wings (left or right) but to dig down deeply in their own lives. The book challenges our humanity and confronts us with the reality of our mortality and does with passion and enthusiasm and gusto because John St.Augustine looks at life and shouts, "YES!" It can be a bit intimidating because it is so radical.

At various points I found myself reading and thinking to myself that I could live the kind of rich, full life he writes about here -punctuated with stories of famous (and anonymous) people he has known - and wanting to live that kind of life but realizing that to do so I had to follow his most serious lesson...that living takes work and determination but that it is so worth that work.

I could go on and on in writing but frankly I am more interested in now going back through some of the chapters - like the one in which he talks about learning the power of living in the moment through the late Chicago Bears star Walter Payton - to learn what I have already forgotten.

I've never written an Amazon review before and perhaps I haven't done the best job - my enthusiasm may be getting in the way of my writing - but don't hold that again this uncommon book. It is remarkable and must, must, must be read.

5 out of 5 stars An inherently engaging, unusually candid, and occasionally inspiring, and highly recommended read!.......2006-11-05

At the lowest point in his life the John St. Augustine began a walk across the country, embark on some thousand miles from northern Michigan to Chicago and back, which allowed him to reinvent himself and embark on a new career in radio. Best known for his 'power thoughts' vignettes, "Living an Uncommon Life" covers more than his experiences and awakening: it includes patterns form other exceptional personalities he's met along the way, and reveals how these personalities uncovered strength from adversity. "Living an Uncommon Life" is an inherently engaging, unusually candid, and occasionally inspiring, and highly recommended read!

Book Description

Life today is plagued by failed relationships, financial pressure, frustrated goals, and dashed dreams. Everybody wants “the good life,” but we’re constantly frustrated by our inability to experience it–even when we energetically pursue all the best-selling methods for achieving success.

There must be a better way to live. Yet it seems even those who appear “successful” aren’t truly satisfied. What’s the true secret to genuine success? Once again, God has the answers. And you’ll find them in The Solomon Secrets. Thousands of years ago the wisest, wealthiest, and most powerful man of his day compiled a book filled with practical insights for success in every area of life: parenting, marriage, vocation, relationships, self-control, and money management, just to mention a few. Yet Solomon’s collection of Proverbs remains one of the must neglected books in the Bible.

To a modern reader, these simple directions might seem illogical. But God’s wisdom as articulated by Solomon is “uncommon sense for extraordinary success.” This ancient wisdom holds the key to achieving and enjoying the things we want most in life.

Good, easy-to-read, back-to-basics reimnder of few basic principles that have survived the test of time. Just wish the adapt-to-now part was expanded a bit more.

5 out of 5 stars Uncommon sense.......2003-07-07

A very readable book whose treasure is the ancient but timeless wisdom of King Solomon. If a jerk is always giving you advice, should you listen? Is fear of God a good thing? You have been treated unfairly and are angry, what should you do? This book applies biblical principles to answer these and many other questions relevant in today's world.

This was the first book I have read by Robert Jeffress. I am now looking forward to reading some of his other books.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary on many levels!.......2006-04-03

There are many extraordinary aspects to this book. The first is that I felt like I was right in the company of these remarkable women as they talked about their lives. Much more than interviews, they are true conversations, and I felt I had been invited to sit in on them, able to see and hear on many levels the depth of what was being shared. Wolff is a master at what she does! Each one of the fourteen women came alive as she generously shared her spirituality with a groundedness that has no room for pretense. Their stories are not about dogma and doctrine; it is about their innermost lives--real and touching.
I was also captivated by the story behind the story: The author determined to write the book following a serious car accident which left her with profound, permanent brain damage, unable even to construct a sentence. By refusing to accept that fate, and working relentlessly to regain brain function, she ended up not only with an insightful book about others' lives, she recreated her own brain from the rubble, re-grooving and rewiring it to superb capacity.
Incidentally, it was a man who first told me about the book. I knew he did not have time for fluff, so I bought the book, and after reading it, bought four more copies to give to both men and women friends. It is an extraordinary treasure on many levels!

5 out of 5 stars Inspring Journeys.......2006-04-02

Margaret Wolf's interviews with these accomplished and insightful women about spiritual life demonstrate the many ways women have found both connections and comfort through their spritual journeys. Through mainstream religions, personal issues, cultural traditions and thoughtul meditations, these women share with Margaret their own pathways to spiritual places and to finding greater meaning in their lives. Inspirational, comforting, compelling, interesting, delightful and connecting, this is a book for anyone who is on his or her own journey. Margaret's gentle and respectful tone of writing and interviewing made me feel I was right there, listening to them talk to me. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars A Life-Changing Read.......2006-03-18

I read In Sweet Company as part of a summer reading group two years ago sponsored by a friend's church. There were usually 10-15 women plus the leader,a young female minister. We met in a coffee shop. As we progressed, reading two chapters a week, I realized that I was reading a life-changing book. The spiritual journeys of each woman were so different and so much the same. Age, religion, and ethnic backgrounds were really not the most important factors in their spiritual experiences. As we discussed the chapters each week we each found something important to use in our lives. In my case, it was the discussion of meditation labyrinths. Not all of the authors were well-known names to me, such as Olympa Dukakis and Sister Helen Prejean; however, each of the women has made a tremendous impact on those around them.I will reread this book at least once a year. The result of our reading group two summers ago was to invite author Margaret Wolff to our city for a women's retreat called "Embrace" that allowed women from all backgrounds, religions and races to learn more about spirituality. The retreat was a great success. We have talked about repeating it.I believe that Margaret has compiled interviews with women whose life experiences strike a chord with other women of all ages. She is an amazing woman herself.

5 out of 5 stars Quote from Jackie Nelson, Columnist and photo-journalist with Knight-Ridder, The Sun News, Myrtle Beach, S.C........2006-03-18

"In Sweet Company" introduces readers to several beautiful and well known women of varying faith traditions who share spiritual journeys and life happenings with author Margaret Wolff. The book is a thrill to read and discover that, although faith traditions may vary, spiritual journeys can be quite similiar.

5 out of 5 stars In Sweet Company.......2006-03-13

A beautiful and inspiring book. As these extraordinary women share their stories of courage and wisdom and their spiritual life they make this a spiritually uplifting experience for the reader. I loved it!

Really neat book. It covers topics from worship to contentment to careers to health. Each section includes a small devotional type thing on the subject, a story from scripture, quotes and verses about the topic, a top 10 list of some sorts, a small bio of someone about the topic and a page with book, music, website and "do it" recommendations. It's for any age group, not just younger people.

Book Description

Ridiculous Faith takes the search for faith beyond clichés and formulas. The Bible doesn't give us formulas-it gives us stories of real people with real doubts and real shortcomings and, most important, a real God who delivers on real promises. This book examines these real people and the way God worked in their lives.

5 out of 5 stars Ridiculous Faith is Astonishing Faith.......2007-10-07

In a culture where so many long for relationship and so many more long to hear a Word from God - `Ridiculous Faith' provides both.

Shundrawn takes biblical principles, roots them in the reality of `daily life,' and, shows the reader how to connect and interact with our amazing King of Kings. The author's objective is strengthening the reader's walk of faith and it's an objective that is impressively accomplished. If you desire to build Christ-like character and rock-solid faith, you will not find a better enabler.

5 out of 5 stars More than you expect - Much more than you hoped for.......2007-03-16

An absolutely fabulous book on faith. This book goes beyond pop thinking, prosperity messages, and traditional sunday school notions of faith. Personally I think it introduces a whole new level of understanding of faith as illustrated by the personalities of the Bible. I think this book is destined to be a classic. One caution - do not let the easy reading style and succint summaries of Bible narrative cause you to miss the supernatural insights packed into this book. I read this book 3 times and now everytime I read the gospel narratives and old testament passages I think again on many of the insights that this book first gave. The opening discussion of David's faith is amazing considering I have heard this story over a 100 times without seeing what Shundrawn Thomas saw. Life changing faith in Christ is the most important concept in Christianity - read this book, have God change your life through a new understanding of His Word and then buy copies to give to your friends. This book will lead you to more than you expected and much more than you hoped for . . .but then again that's exactly what real faith in Christ should do!

5 out of 5 stars Faith Journey.......2006-08-25

In "Ridiculous Faith" Shundrawn Thomas presents our faith in a very exciting and accessible way. Firmly rooted in Scripture - including short but powerful selections from several Bible translations - Mr. Thomas offers Scripture as guideposts to how we can get more out of life. I enjoyed the book immensely and recommend it to anyone interested in developing a richer Faith journey.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring & Insightful Book.......2006-07-15

Ridiculous Faith is a powerful book in which Shundrawn Thomas brings fresh insight to the Word of God. Bible stories and passages you may have heard a million times before take on a new meaning in this book. Ridiculous Faith opened my eyes to what it means to really step out in faith and follow God. The book is very well written and an enjoyable read. A true encouragement to all believers as we go through the highs and lows of living out our faith on a daily basis.

5 out of 5 stars surprisingly obvious.......2006-08-14

I was delightfully surprised by this book. It's small, a very straightforward read and surprisingly obvious. I'm embarassed to say that I've fallen victim enought times to this hectic pace our world provides. This book is a calm and focused wakeup call. It's something I'll bet you'd agree you needed, too.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth your time to read..........2006-08-12

This book clearly provides direction that each one of us need and should want in our life. The principles are things we sub-consciously think about in our daily life, but do not always execute. The principles, tools, and real life experiences these authors provide are outstanding. Not only can you use the tools in your personal life, but you can also utilize them in your professional life.

The Abundance Principle is a very easy and quick book to read. Well worth your time!

4 out of 5 stars Well worth the price..........2006-08-12

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2007-09-07

I loved reading this book! Every chapter is written by a different author and all not only give in depth Biblical knowledge, but also practical knowledge that will touch the heart of any woman. I learned so much and enjoyed the read! This is a great gift for any wife, daughter, aunt or girlfriend. A must read!

3 out of 5 stars "A Woman and Her God" Falls Short.......2007-05-13

I was mildly frustrated when reading this book. While it touched on some good topics, it is often too broad to be really helpful and it seems poorly edited at times including some redundancies between chapters. We used it in a Sunday School Class setting. There were no discussion questions. The book has a strong focus on married women (to the point where I felt the title should have been called "The Married Woman and Her God"). While this was helpful to those of us who were married, it was somewhat alienating to our single women.

5 out of 5 stars A Woman and Her God:Life-Enriching Messages.......2007-01-16

It has been my discovery that whatever Beth Moore puts her name and efforts to is going to edify me...

5 out of 5 stars A Keeper for the Bookshelf!.......2004-09-08

A WOMAN AND HER GOD is collection of encouraging messages from well-known authors and speakers (Beth Moore, Jill Briscoe, Sandra D. Wilson, Kathleen Hart, Dr, David Hager, Thelma Wells, Bevery LaHaye, and Lori LaHaye Scheck). The goal of each message is to convey to the reader her "extraordinary" purpose. The messages are for married and single women as well as for the young and mature.

Some of the messages that were tremendously enjoyed by this reviewer were:

A WOMAN AND HER GOD:
Popular bible study teacher, Beth Moore begins the series of messages with "A Woman and Her God." Beth's down to earth style may be familiar to others and warmly received by new readers. While reading Beth's passionate message, readers may find themselves underlining or highlighting certain statements that really touch them.

"We were meant to utterly devote ourselves to Him."

"One thing that is so incredible about allowing our Father to meet our needs first thing in the day is that if our husband or friend showers us with love later on, our cup overflows. But it's not their job to intially meet the needs of our soul."

AS JESUS CARED FOR WOMEN:
"It only takes a quick study of Scripture to discover that Jesus broke all the cultural codes of his time in terms of His treatment toward women." The only male writer in the group, David Hager, M.D., provides a wonderful look at how Jesus interacted with women and fulfilled their needs. Dr. Hager points out several lessons that can be found in the Scripture such as respect (Luke 7:36-38) and love ( Mark 5:35-43).

BEING A GODLY WOMAN THROUGH EVERY STAGE OF LIFE:
Kathleen Hart says, "Choose to be satisfied with Jesus and have His peace in this moment." Kathleen encourages the reader to explore where she is at right now in her life with six poignant questions.

The other writers cover such topics as a woman's role, self-concept, the spirit of unity and trusting God. This is a book you might want to keep as a copy or purchase as a gift for friends. The messages are definitely encouraging and worth reading again and again.

I am always impressed with Beth Moore but not only do you get Beth in this book but several other phenomenal Christian writers as well. This book really ministers to a woman's needs and gives incredible insight to the seasons of a woman's life and application of God's word. I would highly recommend this book!

Customer Reviews:

Robert White's book should be issued as standard equipment as you exit the womb and referenced every day for the rest of your life.

We tend to think that living an extraordinary life must be complicated and difficult - but it's easy. It's far easier than living a difficult and mundane life. It's all about perception. I wish I had learned his lessons long ago.

"Living an Extraordinary Life" was written to help you find happiness and fulfillment within your life. It is written around a framework of three concepts that need to be worked on in order for us to achieve our goals. These concepts are: Awareness, Responsibility and Communication. White teaches you how to apply these concepts into your life so that you can find your true purpose and achieve your goals. White uses eye catching chapter titles, lists of the differences between ordinary people and extraordinary
people, and meaningful quotes to get you thinking about what is coming in the chapter. White also points out behaviors and thought patterns that we tend to have that keep us just "ordinary" and not very happy. He discusses what extraordinary people do to keep themselves at that higher level. A lot has to do with how we deal with a situation. An extraordinary person can be going through a rough time, like us, but how they process what they are going through tends to be very different from what we are processing.

Everything that he writes makes so much sense. This is the type of book that will take you some time to read. It is also a good to time to be journaling what you are thinking and feeling. I know that this book has changed my life. It is up to me to continue to
work on what I need to, so that I stay at this higher level.

"Living an Extraordinary Life" is a keeper, do not let this book out of your hands. You will want to read it again at many points in your life. If you want a friend to read it, which you will, buy them a copy and hold on to yours!

I loved this book because of the real-people stories. This book is a down-to-earth guide on how to live in the moment and what it takes to live responsibly--and, therefore, successfully. Thanks to Robert White for sharing so much of his expereince and lessons.

5 out of 5 stars The Master Accountablitly Teacher of our time.......2006-03-15

This is the most powerful book I have ever read about accepting responsibility for every thing in your life and the power that it has to change your attitude in so many ways. I was impressed with Robert White's no nonsense style and the ability he had to cut through all of my distorted thinking habits.
