The Questions
Arrogant, self-centered, stubborn, and insecure -- words that most people associate with ego. But in this original, eye-opening work, authors David Marcum and Steven Smith argue that the upside of ego is as powerful as the downside and answer questions about ego that have been a mystery to most people.
In his landmark book, Good to Great, Jim Collins showed that one of two key traits defined leaders who transformed organizations from good to great: humility. But if humility is so powerful, why don't more of us have it? Why does ego allow us to reach good results but never great ones, unless balanced by humility? Why do we need ego to personally succeed, while having it often interferes with the success we pursue?
The Answers
Using five years of exhaustive research, Marcum and Smith provide compelling evidence and matter-of-fact answers on striking the balance between ego and humility to reach the next level of leadership. The authors include case studies to illustrate how ego subtly interferes with success but also how ego sparks the drive to achieve, the nerve to try something new, and the tenacity to conquer adversity.
The Early Warning Signs
We all have moments when ego costs us everything from an honest conversation to a job or promotion. Through cross-disciplinary research, egonomics reveals how to detect four early warning signs that ego is becoming a liability, including how:
being too competitive makes you less competitive
defending ideas turns into defending yourself
winning ideas can be halted by the creator's own intelligence and talent
desiring respect and recognition can interfere with success
The Keys to Egonomic Health
Three key principles keep ego healthy:
humility: striking the crucial balance between too much ego and not enough
curiosity: blending free thinking and discipline without bias
veracity: removing fear of giving or getting feedback to produce water-cooler honesty
With a clear focus on elevating the way you do business, egonomics is a liberating approach to becoming a rare and respected leader.

Be Careful!.......2007-10-08
A word of caution: if you don't want your relationships with those who live and work around you to change for the better, stay away from this book! Marcum and Smith have shared some clear-headed thinking about how we tend to interact with others in a way that will be understandable to even the most analytical among us. Nurturing traits of veracity, humility and curiosity will likely lead us to more productive, enjoyable lives, but will certainly enhance the lives of those around us!
A must read!.......2007-09-17
This is the kind of book that can have a profound impact on your personal and professional life if you really take the concepts to heart and are open to self-improvement. I've seen great changes in myself and others who have really focused and become aware of the "early warning signs" of an unbalanced ego.
Marcum and Smith take the concept of ego and show how it can have impact in everyday personal and business situations. I found the book to-the-point, entertaining, memorable, and one that I'm constantly quoting from. While it's a quick read, the impact of it will last a lifetime!

Grab it now, read it now, and begin to transform your team to levels of brilliant innovation heretofore not experienced. I highly recommend this book.......2007-09-12
Life is made up of moments, and how we handle each of those moments, especially when we are under stress, is what becomes the definition of who we are in the minds of others. This book spoke directly to the challenges and opportunities I struggle with, especially during those stressful moments when the positive characteristics of ego turn into their negative manifestations. With every turn of the page, Egonomics provides clear, personal, tanglible examples and suggestions about how to minimize the negative effects of ego and recognize when those negative traits are surfacing. I cannot recommend this book enough.
A must read for leaders at any level.......2007-09-09
What Jim Collins identified in Level Five Leaders in Good to Great, Egonomics investigates, dissects, and ultimately provides strategies to develop the leadership traits that make or break teams and organizations. The early chapters provide the warning signs of unhealthy ego - either too much or not enough. Later chapters explore humility and that it is actually the product of an ego in balance. And that when humility is combined with veracity and curiosity, leadership moves from mediocre to effective, from effective to extraordinary.
Egonomics is very readable guide that provides steps that can improve the effectiveness of leaders, team members, individual contributors and ultimately organizations. It will be a required read for everyone on my team.
Book Description
Part vocational pep rally, part how-to book, What Makes the Great Great elaborates on the inspiring message bestselling author Dennis Kimbro put forth in his first book Think and Grow Rich--A Black Choice. In What Makes the Great Great, the author explores the strategies and thought processes of successful African-Americans. Through dozens of interviews and the inspirational stories of people like John H. Johnson, Publisher of Ebony magazine, Condoleeza Rice, Provost of Stanford University, and Ann Fudge, President of Maxwell House Coffee, Dr. Kimbro outlines the nine strategies that determine success.
According to Dr. Kimbro, being great depends on a commitment to making dreams come true: "All high achievers make choices, not excuses." He believes we all have the seeds of greatness in us, and his book gives readers the tools to discover and nurture those seeds, showing hem how to motivate themselves to master every aspect of their lives.

Nothing Like It!.......2007-04-27
Mr. Kimbro has detailed the steps towards success in this book. The glass is half full in "What Makes the Great Great". Looking beyond ones circumstances and activating your subconsious mind to pursue and achieve your dreams is the foundation for what I got out of it. It makes sense, is easy to understand and has practical steps that work!
Not just another change your thoughts/change your life book!.......2007-04-26
I love books like this! This book is not only inspiring, but it gives the reader clear examples and instructions on how to achieve your own greatness.
When I first picked this up, I wasn't sure how this book would stand out among all the others I've read that are along the same lines as this. I've read numerous books by Napoleon Hill, Og Mandino, Dale Carnegie, Neville, etc. So, I was wondering if this was just another off-shoot of those, and I was wondering if my time might be better spent re-reading the classics that I mentioned above. I was pleasantly surprised when I started reading and discovered that not only is this book a reinforcement of the above mentioned favorites of mine, but the style is highly appealing to me. This is not just another 'change your thoughts, change your life' type book. This is not a book of quotes, but there are a plethora of really good statements/examples of acheivement and quotes throughout, that I believe can be extrememly beneficial. I love quotes that inspire, motivate and resonate with me. There are many, many really good things to write down and review often from this book.
I was impressed when I read the part about the author meeting with Clement Stone personally and how Mr. Kimbro accepted the project challenge even though Mr. stone decided against offering any financial inducement. -Because Mr. Stone felt it was important for Dennis to experience the very thing he was trying to convey to the audience. That made me realize that this man can truly write about this stuff. He didn't just get a bunch of books/materials together and come up with his own translation -he experienced the journey himself.
"Success in any area of life isn't something you do; rather it's something to see. Success is an understanding, not an activity." -from the book.
Great book. I hope you will read it, love it, and use it in your own life!
Great for anyone.......2007-01-21
Dr. Kimbro relates stories of Black Americans for this book, but the message holds true for everyone! Just look past color and recognize that the messages here will work for all. Dr. Kimbro uses stories to support his concepts and he does a nice job of it. I got it from the library, but enjoyed it so much and wanted to reference it that I bought it! Good writing, well layed out, good message. To simplify so that you can get the main points you might want to summarize and condense the "meat". The stories are great, but the main points can really help anyone be successful if they chose. Read it!
Waist of TIME.......2006-07-12
The book is pointless. Do not read it if you already have some sense of self worth.
Read this book - even if you are not African-American!!!.......2004-08-10
I picked up this book thinking that it would perhaps be a series of small bios of famous persons who had succeeded. To my delight, this book is so much more. I am not black, I am not even American, but I highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking to come to terms with their purpose and place in this world. Dr. Kimbro is a wonderful writer and has a way of helping you to look at your life that I have not come across before (and I have read Covey etc). Like other reviewers, I wish this book was on CD so I could listen to his words time and again and really integrate them into my life. As it is, my copy of his book is now covered in stickies, comments, and various scraps of paper with my own notes on. I can give no higher praise than to say this book has led me to my own life's true purpose and I am now actively on the path to a happy and energetic life. Thanks Dr. Kimbro!
Book Description
For better or worse, museums are changing from forbidding bastions of rare art into audience-friendly institutions that often specialize in “blockbuster” exhibitions designed to draw crowds. But in the midst of this sea change, one largely unanswered question stands out: “What makes a great exhibition?” Some of the world’s leading curators and art historians try to answer this question here, as they examine the elements of a museum exhibition from every angle.
What Makes a Great Exhibition? investigates the challenges facing American and European contemporary art in particular, exploring such issues as group exhibitions, video and craft, and the ways that architecture influences the nature of the exhibitions under its roof. The distinguished contributors address diverse topics, including Studio Museum in Harlem director Thelma Golden’s examination of ethnically-focused exhibitions; and Robert Storr, director of the 2007 Venice Biennale and formerly of the Museum of Modern Art, on the meaning of “exhibition and “exhibitionmaker.”
A thought-provoking volume on the practice of curatorial work and the mission of modern museums, What Makes A Great Exhibition? will be indispensable reading for all art professionals and scholars working today.

Book Description
"Good workplaces are worth examining if for no other reason than that they enrich the lives of the people working there. Everyone, after all, would prefer working in a pleasant environment to an unpleasant one. Since most of us spend the greater part of our waking hours at work, this is no small matter."
With this idea in mind, Robert Levering decided to depart from the usual approach - looking at what's wrong with bad workplaces and how to fix it - and instead sought to discover what is right with truly great workplaces. To do so, Levering interviewed employees and managers at every level of "the best of the best" - the top 20 from his best-selling book, The 100 Best Companies to Work for in America.
In this groundbreaking book, Levering uses interviews and anecdotes from the best employers to:
- Show why the most essential ingredient of a great place to work is trust between employees and management
- Explain why conventional management practices make it difficult to create a good workplace environment
- Provide case studies of positive and negative transformations of workplaces
The inspiring message of this book is that any company can become a great place to work. A Great Place to Work helps employees interpret daily experiences at work and determine what it is possible to expect. But it also informs well-meaning employers with ideas and tips about how to improve the quality of a working environment.

Excellent insights into what makes a great employer.......2000-03-06
Although some of the examples used are a bit dated, the insights and conclusions about what makes a good or bad employers are still valid. This is a well-written book that shows how some employers actively strive to generate trust between the company and employees. If you don't like the company for which you work, this book will illustrate some of the practices of companies that truly value employees as their most important resource instead of just paying lip service.

Contents: what is art? what is beauty; style and manner in art; abstraction vs. representation; conception in art; composition in art; expressions in art; drawing in art; color in art; technique; analysis of works of art; deformation of form; gospel of ugliness; independence in art; examples of noble works of art by Americans; conclusion.
Customer Reviews:
A great book.......2007-03-15
Ruckstull was a well-known and respected sculptor in the early twentieth century, but his star was eclipsed by a modern-art movement he detested, especially Rodin. Ruckstull deserves recognition both for his own sculptures and for his writings.
This book is a remarkable achievement, a collection of Ruckstull's essays on the elements to analyze when evaluating a work of plastic art. It constitutes one of the most thorough systems of art evaluation ever assembled. He treats conception, composition, technique, manner, style, and a host of other aspects in considerable detail.
The skeptic washed in the waters of modernism would say this is a dated relic, perceiving that insights the reader gains will threaten modernism's hegemony. I see universal validity here.
Art Rectification.......2006-04-29
This book can guide you back on the right path of ART. Mr. Ruckstull is a great artist with great character
