Few of us are natural-born leaders, according to John C. Maxwell, author of Developing the Leader Within You. Even the Table of Contents reads like a motivational poster.

Maxwell (The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader), who is the founder of INJOY, a Christian-based leadership program, debunks the myth that strong leaders must have big egos and spend all their time harnessing personal power. Instead, he elevates leadership to a spiritual act of service: "The growth and development of people is the highest calling of leadership." Maxwell relies on real-life anecdotes, short paragraphs, charts, and numerous lists to make his wisdom accessible. As a result, his writing often seems simplistic, with a self-help tone. This is one of the best books to read if you really want to learn how to be a leader in any walk of life. its not just for business. I used it in my personaly life. It works in all things it says and I highly recommend it.

Inspirational Book.......2007-06-30

I bought this book before starting my first job that would involve managing other people. I flipped through a few pages of it at the book store and was really impressed with how it was laid out. The book is organized into ten different attributes of leadership. Each chapter covers a thorough description and examples of the attribute. It also offers great ways to be effective in each area. I loved the anecdotal stories and poems that were included too. I finished this book in about two days and felt really inspired to go out and put it into action.

I read John Maxwell's Developing the Leader Within You as part of an assignment for a small group communication class. The book I chose to read for this assignment had to be of some interest to my career, and I chose this particular read because I figured that any person - no matter what profession - can benefit from leadership training. However, what I appreciated most about the book was that its principles can be applied to almost any situation in which a person wants to improve his or her overall effectiveness. The lessons taught in the text are good advice not just for becoming a better leader, but for everyday life as well. Even if you are at a point in your career where you are primarily a follower, you can still benefit from Maxwell's teachings and observations.

An example of a topic Maxwell covers that applies to most of us is prioritizing responsibilities and tasks. We all have duties and obligations that will continue to pile up unless we know which projects to take on and how to approach them. According to Maxwell, 20% of our priorities will give us 80% of our production. Therefore, our time and energy are best used if we channel them to our top priorities. Maxwell says that we can learn to prioritize by asking ourselves what is required of us (what we can do that no one else can), what gives us the greatest return for our effort, and what we find most rewarding.

I did enjoy many of the quotes from well-known individuals that Maxwell included in the text. My favorite was, "The water does not flow unless the faucet is turned on" (Louis L'Amour). Many of these quotes can be applied to everyday life, and not just leadership situations. Sometimes, however, I did feel that Maxwell threw in quotes "just for kicks" when they were not totally necessary. If he had elaborated on his points in his own words instead of someone else's, those points would have been stronger and clearer. Another irritation I experienced while reading the book was its occasional use of sexist language, both in the quotes Maxwell chose to incorporate and in his own words. Moreover, most, if not all, of the individuals he highlighted as displaying successful leadership were men. The only times he mentioned women's contributions were in reference to his wife, his personal assistant, or a woman who worked for him. In future books, Maxwell needs to focus on the sound leadership abilities of women as well as men.

In short, I would recommend this book if you want to improve your self-discipline, organizational skills, or people skills, even if you are not currently in a leadership position. Whether Maxwell realizes it or not, this book can be helpful to more people than just those who lead by profession.

Leaders, Read This One!.......2007-04-04

Dr. Maxwell gives the fundamentals of leadership. As a leader in leadership, you need to know the fundamentals. Maybe you have been leading naturally, that is good, but how about refining your skills. Take this book and eat it!

Maxwell does a great job of breaking down the essentials of Leadership without turning it into rocket science. While a bit wordy, it is still an easy read and easy application. My organization is now using this as the basis for leadership development with front-line supervisors.

Interesting, but doesn't match my physical and menthal condition. These excesises break the balance of tension and relaxation in my body, and I become more self-content and less of service to others. Secrets of Shamanism is an interesting and informative read with loads of meditation and journey ideas for the reader to enjoy. The authors have done an excellent job explaining how one can utilize shamanism as a wisdom tool and a means to stimulate personal insight.

Shades of Carlos Casteneda. It brings the priceless Don Juan-type of knowledge to our level so that we can interpret and use the concepts to increase our power. It is fascinating and a real page-turner.

I first read this book over a year ago. I picked it up again recently and was struck by how many of the ideas and insights had stayed with me and worked a sometimes subtle, sometimes profound change in my life. If you want to take control of your life and need a place to start, this book will set you on the path.

Horse Sense for the Leader Within.......2004-11-23

This is a fantastic book by a gifted teacher and horse person. If you are looking to learn more about yourself and how to develop clarity and intention in your life, this is a great read. The author gives a thorough education about the natural instincts of horses and humans and how those instincts affect our behaviors and outlook on life. Learning to recognize how we can work with these instincts to enhance our experience of ourselves and improve our interactions with others is the core gift of this book and of the workshops that the author teaches at her ranch. I recommned both very highly.

This book profiles several outstanding individuals who touched
the life of Mr. Danzig. The life stories are uplifting.
People from all walks of life, unsung heroes who "do the right
thing" who make life better for us all because of the choices
they've made. People who make their dreams come true, who
overcome their handicaps and environment, whose lives challenge
us all to break out of our lives of comfort and routine.

I had the privilege of hearing Mr. Danzig speak at the
California Club on March 2nd, 2006 and I was very affected
by the experience. I read Mr. Danzig's book cover to cover
in one session.

Autobiographical, biographical, inspirational, instructive.......2001-12-03

Bob Danzig was the senior corporate executive in charge of the Hearst Newspaper Group for two decades. During that time-and through his career leading up to that point, he met movers and shakers and a lot of "ordinary" people who made a difference in one way or another. In this book, he's tried to capture a wide range of experiences and perspectives-almost too much-to make his points about leadership.

The autobiographical thread starts at the beginning of the book and continues all the way through. If you're interested in selected aspects of the life of a highly involved newspaper man, this book will provide you with one historical anecdote after another. Danzig shares many of his experiences with people of significance and, well, other people of a different kind of significance. His professional life story weaves through the book-in disjointed pieces. I found myself wanting a stronger stream of consciousness, a more connected flow of this man's life. He is obviously a key player kind of person, but the reader never gets a full story of Danzig, the man.

To present and illustrate his nine powers of leadership, Danzig shares the stories of men and women who exemplify the powers he enumerates. He provides evidence for his points, describing how each role model lived the power he describes. Then a third person's comments are inserted to validate Danzig's points by lauding the celebrity. Some of these role models are well-known. Others are not as familiar to us, if known at all. As one example follows another in a well-designed flow, they help Danzig make his powerful points about the role of leadership.

Readers will learn about 9 Powers: Quality, Innovation, Inspiration, Perseverance, Passion, Character, Charisma, Energy and Enthusiasm. The instructional thread can be followed, interwoven with the autobiographical and biographical threads. While sharing some of the experiences of an important newspaper man, you'll gain from the knowledge and perspective he learned from the people he met and quoted in this book.

Women are leaders too, and all women have leadership potential and abilities. This is the message of this new book by Joan Eleanor Gustafson.

Some Leaders are Born Women tells the stories of 37 female leaders from different walks of life - so the book is easy to read, interesting and down-to-earth. It tells you how these women got their feet wet! and rose to the challenges within each of their lives, communities, businesses and families. The stories of these women ar wonderful and truly inspiring.

Joan outlines the seven essential characteristics shared by women leaders in the world today and outlines the ways in which each of us can become more effective in our lives by building and developing the leader that already lives within us. Readers who enjoy self help strategies will find the advice here helpful and relevant.

Although most of the stories are about American women, some come from other countries. I enjoyed discovering the commonalities in the stories despite the diversity of occupation and location.

It is clear to me, from reading this book, the Joan Eleanor Gustafson is herself a dynamic leader and has a lot that is interesting to say about a topic that is still difficult for women to grapple with, acknowledge and own - that some leaders are born women!
