Book Description
Have you ever wondered why you didn't get a job offer after an important interview?
People interviewing for jobs today often fail because they are using yesterday's strategies. They haven't realized that the best employers have changed the way interviews are done, and it now takes a different strategy to succeed.
Competency-Based Interviews shows today's candidates a new, more targeted way to prepare for the tough interviews based on the competencies that the most sophisticated employers are looking for.
Competency-Based Interviews offers you a new and more effective way to handle the tough new interviews so that you will emphasize the knowledge, skills and abilities that you have and that employers need. Most sophisticated U.S. and international employers are using competency-based systems to recruit, interview and select employees. Corporations such as American Express, Anheuser Busch, BP, Coca-Cola, Energizer, Federal Express, IBM, and Pfizer are all looking for specific competencies.
Preparing for a competency-based interview will give you the strategy you need to:
Be selected for the most competitive positions.
Win the best job at a new organization.
Get a great first job or internship.
Be chosen for that critical promotion in your current organization.
Take control of your career path.
Increase your salary.
Get more interesting assignments and more interesting work
Most interviewees don't know how to be successful when they are being interviewed by an organization looking for key competencies. Few candidates answer questions so they demonstrate their own critical competencies.
Competency-Based Interviews will teach you what you need to master this tough new interview style and give the interviewers the answers that will win you the job.

Competency-Based Interviews.......2007-09-21
I am out on the job market after a 25 year career at GM. While I interviewed and hired employees, there is nothing quite the same as your own job interview. This book is a must for anyone wanting to brush up on their interviewing skills.
A Must for Targeted Selection/Compentecy-Based Interviews.......2007-06-28
This book is a must if you have a targeted selection or competency-based interview in the near future or if you are planning to change jobs in the near future. In fact, even if you don't plan on searching for a new job within a year, I still recommend this book due to the planning advice it gives.
This is by far the best all-in-one book for targeted selection or competency-based interviews. Ms. Kessler is an excellent author and she breaks down the process on how to prepare, how to perform during the interview, and how to follow up after the interview.
Great for landing interviews.......2007-06-16
After re-writing my resume using the competency format, the interviews started pouring in! Good examples and guidelines. Have organized all my competencies and interviews are much easier.
Also recommend the full book on writing interviews.
Excellent book with very useful advice.......2007-04-07
I loaned my copy to two friends going to interviews for big jobs.
Both of them raved about how this book put them in to a fame of mind that made them very comfortable going into and during their actual interviews. It makes you think about questions and areas of your past work expereinces that you should and should not talk about and how to talk about them. Great buy.
Effective, simple and to the point.......2007-04-06
The author carefully gives you the information to help you prepare for your next interview, even if the employer is not conducting a competency based interview. I have had three interviews in the last two weeks and two of three employers used competency based interviewing techniques. I was fully prepared and unsurprised. The book is also simple to read and provides you with summaries that help bring it all together. Additionally, the book gets to the point. I was examining my competencies in the first chapter. The book is also helpful in that it provides case studies that help improve your responses.

The only book you'll ever need!.......2007-10-18
As an M.B.A with a Marketing specialization, and having read tons of books on Selling and Marketing, I would recommend this book hands down for any one wanting to learn the basics, as well as to brush up their skills and become adept at selling their product or service. I am starting out on my own and this one book has proved very handy. The Edwards truly understand the nuances and difficulties of selling, especially for those on their own and and have analyzed some of the problems that typically inhibit people from succeeding even with the right plan.
If you work from home, definitely get the Working from Home book by the same authors, and read them both. I have recommended this book to many friends.
Particular points of interest for me was the repeated emphasis to specialize, to choose a niche, and avoid the trap of being a Jack of all trades.......too many options make most of us decide we could do several different things - b'cos we are good at many things or b'cos we want more options for revenue. The authors spell out how this would be very much like shooting ourselves in the foot, and help you shape your strategy and reason things out for yourself.
To summarize, this books not only helps you get business, it also helps you choose your strategies, from a clever business name to finding a niche. Get this book now!
Rubbish.......2007-10-12
Lots of talk about impractical business ideas and promotion methods. Hundreds of pages of empty talk.
Marketing essentials for your small business........2007-09-13
Another great book for a small business looking to establish themselves and learn the essentials of marketing. Getting Business to Come to You focuses your attention on the most effective, low-cost methods of marketing and also gives very useful technical details on the process of creating your own marketing materials.
The four most effective, low-cost marketing methods are
1. Word of mouth. To have a business thrive and grow with only word of mouth marketing should be the goal of every entrepreneur. Not that you can't give it a kick with some other methods when you want, but what sweet bliss it is to have your customers and new ones beating a path to your door with no effort on your part except your great reputation and service. The key is to get yourself into the mind of the people that matter...your customers. Focus your efforts on those people that will buy from you and get them to give you referrals. Everything else you do is in order to reach this goal.
2. Public relations. PR is your ticket to being established as a leader in your industry. Create a publicity kit and get the media's attention. Use your publicity to get others to recognize your name and know that you are the expert in your field.
3. Direct marketing. Use it to control how often your business enters into the mind of your customer. A monthly newsletter or a quarterly sale or discount, that they are alerted to via direct mail or email, will keep you in their minds and keep them telling their friends about you.
4. Inventive advertising. New customers will be attracted to your business if you are effective at advertising. Being inventive is the key. Your copy has to stand out from the rest and you have to be creative. Experiment with different media such as bulletin boards, radio and TV shows, yellow pages, trade directories, etc.
This book has helpful lists of when a particular marketing technique is right for your business and when you're just wasting money. It helps you tailor your marketing campaign to your needs. I especially enjoyed the technical details on such topics as building a publicity kit and writing and designing advertising copy that sells. Other topics were detailed as well, but these stood out as the most important for my business at this time. Read the book and see which ones stand out for you!
While reading Getting Business to Come to You I often found myself putting the book down to implement some of the things I had learned before moving on.

A wealth of information .......2007-08-07
This has got to be one of the best marketing books out there for small businesses. The authors really have a good understanding of what it's like to be starting out, and the mistakes that can be made -- and how to do it RIGHT instead!
My only complaint is it is a bit wordy at times. One good example serves the purpose, and we are given 5. So skim on once you get the point. There is a ton of meat here. Great great stuff. Well worth the money spent.
Getting Business to Come to You.......2007-02-10

Customer Reviews:
AWESOME! A must have for any working woman!!.......2007-07-06
This book is wonderful and a must have for any woman that works outside of the home or runs her own business. Mikelann gives very thoughtful and insightful stories to help the reader understand the concepts. It is very easy to understand. This book makes you take a deep look at yourself and how you might be sabotaging your own earning power. I have used the book and already gotten a 10% higher salary with a new job offer.
A trip.......2007-01-12
First heard this talked about on the radio. I only caught the last few minutes-- but had to call the radio station to find out it's name. This is a book every woman should read. It will give you the shaking that your mother should have. I bought a copy for my daughter and another for my neice. It is one of those books that you read-- then put down, and recover for a while-- then read some more. I will make sure every woman I know hears about it then reads it!
Noble Poverty... me?.......2004-06-25
I must admit when I came to the chapter about Noble Poverty I thought... "Well that's soooo not me! I don't see money in a negative way. As a matter of fact, I like it quite a lot." But then Mikelann went through the different types of Noble Poverty and I started to register how I emotionally relate to my personal worth in financial terms. Such as over extending my volunteer projects, under bidding projects, or even giving away free service to be seen as "nice." How I would accept the "thank you" over a competitive rate. **Note, thank you should be said but not in place of paying your bills.**
Mikelann gives a clear, balanced, and usable plan to rethink and retool your financial wellbeing. I highly recommend this book for those looking for emotional connection or need a usable workbook (yes it's a workbook too!) to take full control of their worth.
An Action Guide to Stop Underearning.......2004-05-27
I inadvertently came across Mikelann's site while surfing the internet. She used a term "underearning" which I had never seen before. When I read the description, I thought she had a pipeline into my life, and wanted to break the cycle I was in.
When I heard that she was publishing this book, I couldn't wait to read it. In each chapter, she dispels the myths, pulls you out of "The Money Fog" and gives action steps to break the insidiousness of underearning.
I refer to her book every day. It is an absolute good fit whether you decide to use the steps in the book, go on to professional consultation (financial as well as psychological - and she gives helpful hints to work with those professionals) or with groups such as Debtors Anonymous.
If you want to turn your relationship with money around, this is the book to get!!!
Waking up Sleeping Beauty!.......2004-04-17
I don't want to deal with finances. Even though I'm not happy with my paycheck, I'd rather sigh on my way to the bank, then take action. How did this happen -- I had a different plan for myself. Why do I let it go on?
The description above is me, and why I got intrigued when my girlfriend told me about this book. WOW -- what a mind opener -- between 'Waiting for Prince Charming' and 'Giving Myself, My Talents, and My Earnings Away" (two psychological traps Ms. Valterra writes about), I have been asleep when it comes to my money situation. This book has served as a great wake-up call and my attitude has already shifted.
Part two of the book gets very practical, and helped me know what to do next -- I hated budgets, but 'spending plan' put a different emphasis on managing money, so I'm trying it out.
Because of this book -- simply written, easy to read, and "real", I am awake and ready to take control. Thanks Ms. Valterra, you've done me a huge favor...(and thanks Lisa, for giving me the nudge to buy it.)

Yes, you can make money from home.......2007-05-07
This is a great book for those who want to look at various options of making money from home. Very sound advice with samples and guidance to various career options. I highly recommend this book.
This is the one book that will really help.......2007-04-19
This book is great. I am a new mom that has been looking for a way to stay home and bring in some income at the same time. This book told me everything I needed to know. From a guide on how to start a business to managing your family and home. There are also many different profiles of moms who have their own business. How they got started, what they needed, how much money they make and how they manage their business and kids. This book was worth every penny.
Want to start your own business???.......2007-03-09
well this is the one for you...with or with out being a mom, i am a mom, but not to a child...i have 2 dogs and a cat. and i am seriously thinking i want to build a business from home so that if the time comes that i am pregnant or have a child that i can be there for him or her...
this book will help you find the job you want, then find ways to market it, make it legal and give you ideas to make it better/more productful. it also gives you different peoples stories of what they started and how it has worked for them.
You have to check it out!
Real life wahms.......2006-02-15
When I first wanted to work at home, I remember finding Liz's website Bizymoms. The first edition of her book hadn't yet been published (1998) but already she had a list of viable home business ideas with real-life stories to back them up. For me, reading about real moms who had found a way to work-at-home was a huge help. It brought the theory from "how to" books into the real world. Liz offers other great tips but for me the real life stories and ideas were the most valuable part of the book. Now I know working at home does happen...I've been a wahm since 1998!
Way Too Vague to Be Beneficial.......2005-10-27
The profiles contained within this book are enjoyable reads, but the information is simply not comprehensive enough to be of real value.
For instance, a proofreader is profiled - she proofreads manuscripts for major publishing houses, including bestsellers. The odds of landing this type of work, unless you have an "in" (you used to be in publishing, for instance) are nearly impossible. While it's understandable that the author wants to sound optimistic, the simplicity of some of her advice is misleading.
Another woman profiled is an attorney, who obviously has the contacts from her working days that bring her work to do at home, as well as the ability to offer a service that is in demand. The average SAHM doesn't have a law degree, and can't just run out and get one.
The truth is, if you don't have work experience or a formidable skill that somehow make you in-demand, this book will do you no good. If you do have the experience or skill, then what you need is a book on marketing your services...simply posting flyers, as suggested in the book, is not going to lead you to 30,50, 80K a year!
If you just want to make money while you're home with your child, but have no real skills or experience, then try selling on ebay or having merchandise parties in your home. If it were so easy for people to make tens of thousands out of their homes every year, everybody would be doing it.
Average customer rating:
- Know your rights!, and use them.
- GOT RIPPED!
- A helpful book at the right time for my career...
- Not my Bag, Baby
- Emotional strength during a tough job crisis

Customer Reviews:
Know your rights!, and use them........2005-12-27
Too many people are completely ignorant of their rights in general. Employment law is no different. This book is not about how to be a good employee and not get fired, it's not about office politics, it's not there to hold your hand through that tough time. It is a book about knowing and exercising your legal rights as an employee. Learn how to protect yourself at work before you even get the job. I highly reccomend this book.
GOT RIPPED!.......2005-06-25
The book was a great read for employment law; but when you think you have a case based on what you read in this book and get to the office and are charged $250 for consultation (1/2 hour)as he takes calls while meeting you, you start to feel a bit ripped off. All the info in the book that I thought made a case meant absolutely nothing when I went to meet this lawyer at his office. Before you consult, buy and read a couple of other books and get as much free consul as you can if at all possible...
A helpful book at the right time for my career..........2004-10-15
As a successful college football coordinator, I realize that my job is always under public scrutiny. Regardless of the fact that I, and the team, am highly successful and that we make our yearly trip to the Holiday Bowl, there is always the outside chance that people are not satisfied with my performance. With my ability to scheme. With my ability to adjust during a game. With my ability to develop talent. With my ability to utilize talent. But I digress.
The previous review noted that the book was only good if you are planning to sue. I don't see this as a negative. In fact, the threat of a lawsuit is certainly a reasonable way to maintain one's position. Also, I've discovered that it's very important to have photographs of one's superior in, shall we say, a "compromising position". I got that idea from the movie "The Firm", and it's allowed me to maintain a career track that is highly enviable.
I appreciate the advice in this book in response to getting fired, in particular the section dealing with "how to protect your pension". Why, just last year I gave my good friend Bull some advice on this very subject which turned out to be a huge help for him. He's now sitting out on his bass boat, fishing while collecting an amazing pension.
The part of this book that I disagree with is entitled "the right way to resign your position". There is no right way and no right time to do this. First, make them fire you. Screw them if they can't see your brilliance. Second, make sure you have those compromising photographs! These ensure that your boss complements you publicly, like "Greg is doing the best job in the country".
In all, this book was very helpful to me, and I plan to use many of these strategies to ensure proper compensation if I am fired. Oh, and I'll publish those pictures too. Which should serve as a reminder - never fall asleep in a strip club in Mexico if your friend has a camera! Ah ha ha ha ha ha!
Not my Bag, Baby.......2003-06-30
Only useful if you're planning to sue. Very depressing if you're searching for emotional support/help only. Do not recommend it overall. Too negative.
Emotional strength during a tough job crisis.......2001-07-20
During a restructuring phase at my company, i had the heavy feeling of not knowing if I was going to be next on the ax list. I stumbled across this book at a bookstore, not really looking for it. Reading the title, I said to myself that this is what I need right now. Very good solid stable advice from a seasoned pro in this field. Knowledge is power and this book gives you an extra kick of power.

Too shallow.......1999-07-29
I bought this book cos I am planing to start up an internet business. The author should take out the remark at the back cover of the book that says ".....Learn from the pros how to start your own profitable Net venture, ......" This book doesn't mentioned a single word about the technology, tools or setup used by those successful site.
You will not start your business after reading this........1999-06-24
The book is entertaining but you might not know what business to start at the end of the book any better. It is certainly not a "how to" book, rather a collection of often interesting stories of big (Borders books) and small companies with prior existence going into the Internet market. I enjoyed reading it and at least it is not yet dated (give it a few more weeks though).

the BEST on the family side of family business.......2001-08-15
This is one of two "required reading" texts for my clients and the transactional advisors who assist me in my own family busines practice. I've not found anything else as informative, insightful and helpful regarding "working with the ones you love." Great exercises that are readily accepted even by the more skeptical family members. Family businesses have told me they've found this helpful even when for fee or geographic reasons--my practice is limited to the Central Valley--I've referred them to this book in lieu of meeting with them personally.

Strong Medicine for Victims of Firing.......2000-03-25
Jodie-Beth Galos and Sandy McIntosh have written an extremely useful book for those who have been unjustly fired or "downsized." The authors provide a comprehensive plan for deciding what the terminated (or soon to be terminated) employee wishes to accomplish, what s/he can, in fact, accomplish, how, precisely, to enter into negotiations and pursue and monitor each phase of the process, how to reach a satisfactory settlement, and, finally, how to manage money while out of work. This clearly and elegantly written book features a balance of realistic stories about firing and negotiation processes and appropriately technical and involved legal and financial information.
Save your money.......1999-12-10
This book is terrible. The "real life situations" used to convey points are so contrived they are obviously made up.This book is written on a sixth grade level and would only apply to your situation if you live in a sitcom.Very poor and possibly financially dangerous advice.Seek information elsewhere.
Puts you in the driver's seat when they're driving you out.......1999-04-24
This book takes the reader from a position of helplessness in the firing process to that of equals negotiating the best transition out of a work situation. While nothing will ever make the process of losing your job pleasant, this book covers all of the ins and outs of making sure that you get the best exit deal that you can, and that you don't fall apart in the time between jobs. Covering the time from before you lose your job (Yes, Virginia, there may be signs that it is coming) through the process of negotiating your exit, and what to do after it's all over, this book gives a solid, sensible approach to handling yourself in the one crisis few of us anticipate. This book tells you what to do, and more importantly, what not to do when you are being fired. Most people don't think about being fired until it's all over. Get the book and be prepared. It can happen to you.
"Firing Back" is a must for a financial planner's library........1997-06-26
When a client faces a daunting task of pulling his
life together after being fired, usually the last
thing he wants to do is "deal" with the ex-employer.
This book effeciently steps the employee through
the maze of beaurocratic nightmares that must be
addressed.

I found this book very inspiring and motivating, especially the second chapter on finding a business to start. It is better to start with a mediocre product than never to get going. .. the continued search for the perfect venture can turn into mere procrastination... Make the decision that you are an entrepreneur. If your plan doesn't work...you are that much closer to ultimate success. This is worth having in your library so you can re-read periodically
The Startup Entrepreneur.......2000-06-21
"The Startup Entrepreneur - How you can succeed in building your own company". It provides you with all the insight into running of a business from startup stage right through to corporation size from the entrepreneur's point of view.
Reading advice; can sometimes be a tedious task, but this book is backed up by James Cook's real life examples of the trials that he went through as an entrepreneur. Right from starting small, in a service-based business then growing to a large corporation this book missed nothing. Its inspirational, advice driven, with plenty of information on what to do in given situations.
Another interesting topic this book covered was the background information given about many of the "famous" entrepreneurs that came out of the American economy. It is a study in the entrepreneur and their habits and common traits. Commonalties were usually that they didn't care a hell of a lot of what people thought of them, they weren't overly greedy, had the need for control, and also had the need for anonymity.
Chapters in the book include starting, developing, success in starting, winning ways to keep you going, and how to diversify your growing enterprise. It finishes with exit strategies, i.e. stepping down, and/or selling your company. It then has a section on one of the crucial topics for all decision makers in a company - tips on marketing and sales. There was even an interesting section on running a sales team.
This is a well-written book with much of the theory based on James Cook's interesting and extremely varied life in business, both in success and on the brink of failure. Motivational for the young and old entrepreneur, I give it an nine out of ten.
