You don't need it........2007-06-21
Limited. Almost useless. Didn't even answer the question of "Who/Whom usage" very clearly. The author wants you to follow her preferences in order to write better. Hey...thanks, but no thanks. I'll write my own way. And you should too. Forget the book.
Good reference.......2007-03-26
I keep this book on my desk for easy reference. Many times people have questions that can be found here in a jiffy. The basics are usually what trip people up. The book contains proper usage of often times miss-used words. Like "further and farther", "lie and lay" as well as verb tense and agreement. I recommend it for anyone who wants to use good grammer.
Something Most All of Us Could Use.......2007-02-15
I have both, Write Right! and Rewrite Right! in my essential writer's bookshelf, and use both often.
I love Jan Venolia's approach, info and style, and Lord knows we can nearly all use some help now and then with those pesky sentence fragments, spellings, and all the other horrors we confront daily in our quest to be not only read, but understood and enjoyed.
I've used Jan's sane advice in crafting both my books.
A Good Review for Good Writing.......2005-08-05
This is a simple, direct, concise review of basic grammar, indispensible for anyone with a short memory and a strong desire to write right. I purchased several copies so that I could give each member on my staff a copy for their desk with the instructions to read it and use it. It will be helpful to improve anyone's writing abilities. The contents are well organized and the examples are very helpful. This book is so good I sometimes use it for bedtime reading when I am preparing to write a special article so that I can do better.
Relief for Beginners.......2002-10-07
I'm just beginning to teach a freshman writing course at a local college for the first time. Although I have a master's degree in English, I should confess that I've used grammar by "feel." That is to say, I didn't know the rules, but I have read a lot, and I just wrote by instinct. I'm not defending this approach, just explaining!
So now I'm faced with the necessity of teaching grammar to my freshmen students. Alas! After a couple of embarrassing and week lectures, I went to the bookstore to get help. I spent about four hours looking for grammar books I could stand to read myself, and that would help me learn enough to teach my students. Most of the books were very technical and overly-detailed for me, and surely for my students as well. However, I found this book, along with a couple of others that were truly a relief in their clarity, fun approach, and pared down lessons.
So, for anyone else who's just starting out studying grammar, I highly recommend this book. It's simple, relevant, understandable, and whimsical. It's not scary, too technical, and too much information. I don't think you'll be disappointed, unless you really WANT to learn every detail.
Also, the other books I found that were helpful were Grammar for Smart People by Barry Tarshis, and The Everything Grammar and Style Book by Susan Thurman. There's another one called Woe is I that I didn't buy but am thinking about doing so. All of these even look fun, so I brought them in to show my students. I thought perhaps if they saw that grammar books don't have to be boring, boring, and more boring, they might someday possibly maybe consider thinking about buying one of them.

Writing, for Julia Cameron, is neither solely vocation nor avocation: it is a way of life. It comes first thing in the morning, while the horses are waiting to be fed; it happens at the kitchen counter, while the onions are sautéing; it takes place on "dates" at café tables shared with likeminded friends; it unfurls in the mind as the '65 pickup "bucks over the rutted dirt roads like a stiff-legged bronco." The more than 40 brief personal essays that make up The Right to Write are an unyielding affirmation of the writing life and a denigration of all that gets in the way: busy schedules, procrastination, insecurity, lack of writing space, a day job--you get the point. Cameron's commonsense advice is liberating to anyone who has felt hampered by making a big deal out of writing (this "tends to make writing difficult. Keeping writing casual tends to keep it possible"), by not having the time to write ("Get aggressive. Steal time"), or the like. If you find a spirit that compares writing to revelation, prayer, and Zen pursuits, that might just attribute misguided communication to Mercury retrograde simpatico, then you will find much to embrace here. And you will never, never again dream of waiting for that commitment-free sabbatical in the south of France to get your writing project under way. --Jane Steinberg

Cameron's instruction and examples include the details of the writing processes she uses to create her own bestselling books. She makes writing a playful and realistic as well as a reflective event. Customer Reviews:
Offers some great kick-in-the-pants tips.......2007-10-18
I haven't been able to get into Julia's other books. I often feel very uncreative when I try to work through them. But I like this book as it seems to be telling me just what I need to hear right now. The chapter on Bad Writing and The Time Lie were especially helpful in getting me going. I like that the chapters are short and when I'm done I feel like writing. I don't do the activities in the book and instead go straight to the projects I'm working on.
Another good resource with similar tips and inspiration is Heather Seller's books Page by Page and Chapter by Chapter.
Indulge yourself.......2007-08-13
Julia Cameron's work is always engaging and this book is no exception. `The Right to Write' is written with beauty and eloquence and would make the perfect companion for any would be writer who struggles with making a start or trusting in their own abilities to bring their work to completion.
With many years as a published writer, Julia's experience and candour gives the reader insights into her own writing life that are inspiring and profound. She takes the budding writer by the hand, and through carefully selected exercises, guides her to overcome resistance and start producing results. Julia turns the experience into something to be cherished, not feared, and the results can be extremely gratifying. If you are in love with the idea of writing and desire to deepen your relationship even more, then this book is for you. Indulge yourself!
here's a book to buy and not borrow..........2007-06-05
...because the writing exercises are good and wonderful to do over and over again. This is not Julia Cameron's best-known book, but it is one of my favorites. As in many of her other books, her style is engaging and intensely readable. But what really stands out to me in this book are the wonderful writing exercises. When I first read the book, I was in a habit of reading about writing, and not in a writing habit. But I turned the corners down on the pages that had writing exercises. Now I go back to those pages and do the exercises, which are fun and useful. There is one that talks about how any mood is a good mood for writing, and encourages exploration of different moods. Another exercise describes the physicality and rhythm of writing and encourages the process of combining walking into the writing life. I recommend this book highly. Inspiration is an overused word, but this book is inspirational.
Best Writing Inspiration Book.......2007-05-15
I have read this book several times and just pulled it off my shelf again yesterday. This is a great inspiration book for writing. When I'm dragging in my work, or having a long bout of feeling uninspired and useless as a writer, I open this book.
Sometimes it's easy to get off track, to write only with the consideration of what others are going to think, or only to get published. For me, that's a death knell to my inspiration. This book has never failed to lift my spirits and remind me of the joys and benefits for *me* that come from what I write and the writing process itself.
Wonderful.......2007-02-15
I completely love Julia Cameron's approach to creativity. She is so practical and helpful in conveying spiritual principles in the most down to earth and usable ways. It is beautiful and fascinating to me that her techniques are equally applicable to every form of creativity. I particularly enjoy the exercises she suggests that mean you not only read about improved expression but you get to experience it directly.
If you have any aspirations to be a writer then this book is a must.
Book Description
Now that medical science can keep people alive almost indefinitely, frequently at an exorbitant cost, every person should consider having a living will. If you are in a life or death situation and are unable to communicate, your family could be forced to decide if they should continue or stop life support measures. This simple document could be the only way your family and doctors will know of your desires regarding your medical treatment. Without a living will, doctors and hospitals may feel compelled to give you useless medical treatment that you would not want, and your spouse or family members may become strapped with extensive and long-term medical bills. This book will show you how to write your own living will, without the expense of a lawyer. It covers all aspects of living wills, answering questions such as: What is a living will? Why does everyone need one? Do you need a lawyer to draft one? How is a living will used? How do you cancel a living will if you change your mind? Are there other basic legal forms everyone should have? In addition to explaining the law, this book also includes a reference guide to the laws and forms for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Using Self Help Law Books

Customer Reviews:
To those who it helps this is a good book .......2004-12-22
To those who it helps this is a good book. There is a lot of positive advice that can help people write, and perhaps feel better about themselves and their lives. This is good.
But I have been a writer for many many writers , and writing it seems to me is a far more painful, difficult, problematic activity than this book suggests. Writing involves coming to terms in some way with what one cannot do as a writer. It involves dealing with one's own failures and one's effort to overcome those failings. My writing life begins in suffering, warding off madness. It continues in trying to understanding the suffering of others I loved, and what such suffering can mean. Writing is so so many different things that I do not wish to generalize or make my own experience the model for anyone. I just would say ' simple formulas help sometimes' but for many writers the search for the truth in writing does not necessarily lead to some world of happiness or greater hope.
Writing has kept me going, helped give meaning to my life, and as with Kafka has been a kind of prayer.
I hope this review does not discourage any reader of this little book. And I also hope my few words have indicated to you what you probably already know, writing can be not so simple and so easy.
NOT ONLY YOUR RIGHT BUT YOUR DUTY.......2004-01-14
THE RIGHT TO WRITE was my first introduction into Ms. Cameron's wonderful spiritual world of God and writing. She always has something wonderful to say. This is the BEST inspiration into writing which I have ever read. (If only I could take a class from her!!!) The necessity of writing which can release yourself into a new and wonderful world is so creative and liberating any one who loves life itself should read this book.

Write It Right: The Ground Rules for Self-Editing Like the Pros.......2007-07-16
One of the most overlooked parts of writing is editing. Often, once ideas are paper, the only editing done by an individual is a simple spell check. Unfortunately, spell check is very limited in its editing ability. This automated system does not recognise words used in improper contexts, proper organization of sentences within paragraphs, appropriate tone, verb agreement, or the presence of repetition. The only real way to assure that a paper or piece of writing is free of such errors is to take time to look over the work and edit as required.
Write It Right: The Ground Rules for Editing Like the Pros sets out guidelines for editing. Exercises within the book allow the reader to evaluate his or her own writing for problem editing areas. The reader can then use this information to tailor his or her editing process to suit his or her specific problem areas reducing overall editing time while increasing the effectiveness of the editing process. Moreover, the tips and techniques set out in this book will be of use not only to students and writers but will be equally helpful to anyone who needs to write reports, newsletters, or proposals in his or her job.
Jam-packed little book of writing advice.......2007-05-17
As the second book in the Ground Rules series, Write It Right continues the solid, succinct advice presented in its predecessor, Putting It On Paper. Dawn Josephson is joined this time around by Lauren Hidden, and, together, they walk you through all the whys and hows of self-editing your writing to make it as good as it can be.
Josephson and Hidden understand that there's more to self editing than the mechanics. Many writers will have a hard time accepting the idea that self-editing is something they should even be doing. We all make mistakes in our writing. Even editors make mistakes.
If you're still not convinced once you've read the Introduction--which includes "The Case for Self-Editing"--I urge you to keep reading anyway. You won't be sorry.
For such a slim volume--as the Ground Rules series tends to be--this book is jam-packed with useful exercises to help you identify and correct your writing weaknesses.
And don't overlook the many appendices at the back. These pages constitute a big chunk of pages overall and could be the most valuable part of the whole book. "How To Sabotage Your Self-Editing Efforts" and "The Ground Rules of [Grammar] and Usage" are especially useful.
My one real quibble with the process promoted and taught in Write It Right is that it seems more practical when applied to shorter works. I cannot imagine undergoing the same lengthy process for a book-length manuscript. How many times can you reread your manuscript before the words blur and you see what you want or expect to see?
Also, while I don't doubt the lessons could be applied readily to creative writing, the focus here seems to be on non-fiction, specifically business writing. That distinction might deter some writers from giving this book a try.
In general, I think Write It Right deserves a spot on every writer's bookshelf. You don't just read this book. You open yourself up to a learning experience taught as much by you as by the authors.
Ground Rules Produce Definite Results.......2006-05-15
Numerous jobs require strong writing skills, yet studies reveal that many members of the American workforce lack the writing essentials. Basics like proper spelling, grammar and punctuation come to mind when people discuss writing. However, well-chosen words, clear-cut thinking and strong structure also compose important aspects of written communication.
Often, those who write fail to develop the important self-editing skills needed to perfect their work. Whether writing comprises one aspect of a person's job or is the main component, taking time to polish the writing is essential.
"Write It Right" serves as a handy self-improvement tool for writers. The authors begin by helping self-editors identify their weak spots by evaluating problem areas. The next phase of the book assists writers with switching gears from writing to editing. Writers need to relinquish ownership of their work and don the editor's hat, refining the material. Like other books on self-editing, this handy guide reminds self-editors to compile an editing checklist, build in time for the editing phase, and edit on paper, not the screen-essential steps to prepare the editor.
Section three walks self-editors through the editing process and dispels any illusions that one time through the document will catch everything. The fourth portion teaches how to use teamwork for better success at editing. The fifth section encourages continued refinement of, and building confidence in, the newly-acquired editing skills.
The book's real-life samples identify organization and transition problems, passive sentences, spelling errors and more. The Frequently Asked Questions segments anticipate readers' questions and provide valuable answers. The appendices also supply important information on editing under pressure, avoiding self-sabotage, knowing grammar rules and usage, and using handy forms and checklists to simplify the process.
As a professor of writing, I found this handy guide to be thorough in covering the basics. I believe it would assist workers whose job description includes writing, college writing majors early in their training, other college students who want an edge when joining the workforce, and high school students who desire stronger writing and editing skills when they leave for college. For those who don't want to immerse themselves in the Chicago Manual of Style or other tools used by professional editors, applying the "Write It Right" ground rules will produce definite benefits.

Book Description
Here is an ESL book that concentrates on homonyms and shows students how they must rely on sentence context to comprehend exact word meaning. The book offers word lists, exercises, drills, and worksheets for classroom use or homework.
Customer Reviews:
Ya-hoooooo for a great book to teach homonyms!.......2004-10-04
I applaud Barron's Educational Publishing for coming up with such a great book! This isn't a general grammar book, but cuts to the chase re: homonyms.
It's touted as an ESL Homonym Workbook, but I've used it in my first grade classroom. This does not mean it looks down on the non-English speaker, but it is a universal text for people of all ages who are looking to master English as a language.
The set-up of each page is simple in design and allows a teacher to isolate words. For example, "pail" and "pale" are listed. Below the heading of words, each is listed with its definition, as well as 3 sentences to show how the word should be used. Below that, practice exercises are listed. These include 5 sentences with a blank in each. The student reads the sentence and determines which homonym is best suited for the sentence. Below that there are 2-3 lines to allow students to write their own sentences. At the very bottom of the page and upside down, answers to the first exercise are listed.
If any words used on the page were previously used in another exercise, there is a box on the right saying "Previously Used Words."
I think this is a great teaching tool, and it has allowed me to work one-on-one with students. Where there was once confusion, these exercises have allowed my students to grasp the concept.
Write English Right.......2003-02-21
As an ESL/ELL Teacher, I found this book to be great with struggling writers. The book format presents the objectives very clear, and if delivered the right way, kids will be hooked on the book and how quickly they can comrehend and utilize such homonyms in story, book reviews, and any other type of writing.
I would also recomend this book to English teachers in the regular curriculum, for a lot of Anglo students have problems with homonyms as well.
Product Description

In 2003, a self-described "sedate and white-haired Italian economist" decided to volunteer in a Palestinian refugee camp. What followed were repeated trips, documented in these letters, to Aida Camp in the West Bank to support and experience the lives of Palestinians young and old.

Making a difference.......2006-11-06
This book takes you through the writers journey as he learns of the situation in Palestine and the lives of the children in a refugee camp. Honest and open and keen to communicate his feelings on his experiences, Fabrizio gives the reader and flavour of his time in Bethlehem. A good introduction to the conflict and some ideas for how people can get involved.
Review by New York Times best-selling author Ellen Tanner Marsh. .......2006-08-05
Review by New York Times best-selling author Ellen Tanner Marsh.
One of the great tragedies of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict is that there are no real winners on either side. While much news is focused on Hamas and the actions of terrorists, not enough attention targets the desperate struggle of the Palestinian people who feel they are living in exile. Since August 2003, economist and author Fabrizio Galimberti spent time volunteering in a Palestinian refugee camp. While there, he chronicled his experiences, e-mailing them home to his grown children, as if he were "watching history through a keyhole." And now, at their urging, he has collected these experiences into a shocking, stirring, and heartbreaking book.
Through Galimberti's eyes, we see and hear and experience the grief, joy and unquenchable life force that is Palestine. He takes us to the Aida Camp, which currently holds over 4,000 people, and to the Old City of Hebron, the only place in Palestine where Israelis and Palestinians live side by side, and where suffering and injustice are rampant. Here, Galimberti reports, the Palestinians do not dare to go out at night and their children must be accompanied to school to ensure they are not attacked by settlers' kids. Galimberti believes that this is a deliberate attempt to make living so uncomfortable for the Palestinians that they will leave. But where, he wonders, can they go?
With the addition of powerful and often heartbreaking photographs, Galimberti provides an intimate look into a terrible situation. All royalties from his work will be donated to the Lajee Center of Aida Camp in Bethlehem. Meanwhile, Letters From Palestine is a brave and moving historical record of a people living with incessant flare-ups of violence and with the terrible slow trampling of their spirit.
