This Kit Really Works.......2007-10-02
I cannot recommend this vocabulary building kit enough. Many many words can be found here. There are 9 cd's. As you go from cd to cd the words increase in difficulty, but it's up to you if you prefer to skip ahead of course. Personally I listened to each cd as a refresher. I was particularly impressed at the techniques used to help the words be retained. The light music. The transitions. This is a quality product. Word Master doesn't just throw words at you. The words are given in a systematic order to aid in your retention. There's a female and a male voice to give the words variety and be more memorable. I loaded the cd's on my flashplayer for a month and listened during my commute to and from work. With a pad and pen I jotted down the words for extra retention power.
Be prepared to listen to these cd's several times over. This pack was surely worth my money. A wise investment in my speaking, writing, business career or anyone who wants to amp up their potential.
Excellent and well thought out teaching tool .......2007-05-12
This is a simple but excellent way to add words to your vocabulary. The background music really aids in retaining the material. You can add 500 words to your arsenal in no time flat. Denis Waitley is hard to beat in instructing a student in a given area. He is the Gold Standard and really one of a kind. I reccommend this program for anyone of any age to add and retain new words. A wonderful set of Cd's at a great Amazon price.
Great language expansion tool.......2006-12-16
English is my second language. I was looking for an advanced course for a long time, particularly the audio course, to transfer the idle commuting time and low-absorbing job tasks into my own university in motion.
This one is perfect - the best one I found so far. The words are spelled, which is a tremendous help for a visually-oriented person like me. Some other courses (i.e."Verbal Success") don't spell words. The only downside is the awkward and outdated format. It takes approximately one evening to convert the CDs into MP3s, rename the tracks so they are played in a proper sequence, and copy on one's Ipod. The whole course takes total 142MB space at 32kbps bitrate, which produces acceptable voice quality. There is a free CD to MP3 converter available for download online.
Even, though I was already familiar with many words presented in this course, it helps to acquire proper accent by listening. It's money well spent. I used to pay the professional accent teacher $50 per hour.
I hope the authors will issue the next volumes with more vocabulary. I very much look forward to it.
This is the next-best audio tutor (after "Verbal Advantage") for enhancing your vocabulary........2006-12-04
With its smoothly alternating male/female narration and its soft, "suggestopedic" (classical) background music, Denis Waitley's "Word Master" audio tutor enjoyably introduces and explains 500 mostly well-chosen words. A tiny minority of the words in the initial unit might seem too commonplace to be included in such a tutor; on the whole, however, the range of vocabulary seems appropriate not only for advanced high school students or graduates but also many university graduates (especially those who weren't English majors).
Waitley states that mastering all the words in his program provides a degree of fluency achieved by only the upper five percent of the population. [Incidentally, the identical claim was likewise (previously) made by the author of the competing "Verbal Advantage" program.]
The "Word Master" vocabulary--though undeniably challenging and eminently beneficial for the majority of the educated adult population--is not fully as extensive or quite as advanced as that of the competing "Verbal Advantage" audio tutor by Charles Harrington Elster [note: I'm referring specifically to the complete (24-CD) "Success Edition" of Verbal Advantage]. "Verbal Advantage" not only touches on 3,000 synonyms and antonyms (corresponding to its core of 500 "keywords"), but its two most advanced levels of vocabulary generally surpass in difficulty the highest level of "Word Master"--the latter, in its own right, being already rather advanced by most benchmarks. [In fairness, it could be argued that some of the words in Verbal Advantage's uppermost level are too esoteric to be uttered by anybody but the "nerdiest" egghead. ;-)] Additionally, Elster's intermittent, fairly extensive "supplementary discussions" (generally significantly more linguistically pertinent and/or "in-depth" than Word Master's occasional, somewhat analogous digressions) are frequently extremely useful for highlighting the more complicated nuances of diction and related matters. Accordingly, "Verbal Advantage" is more appropriate than "Word Master" for some university graduates and language specialists. On the other hand, the regular price of the 24-CD "Verbal Advantage" is downright exorbitant, while the 9-CD "Word Master" can typically be had for less than twenty dollars.
Here's how "Word Master" basically works:
Each word is pronounced, spelled, defined, and used in at least two sentences. Then the current word is again pronounced, spelled, and defined before the next word is introduced and explained in like fashion.
Brief "review" sessions (after the presentation of each unit's "group of five" words) are likewise provided. During each such review, the listener is enabled to supply (vocally or mentally) an appropriate definition for each given word.
The two (male/female) narrators are first-rate. The alternation of their voices makes for a pleasing delivery of the program content.
Whereas the competing "Verbal Advantage" employs (essentially) strictly "vocal-narrative" content, "Word Master" adds soft, "classical" (late-baroque period) background music, which reportedly/supposedly boosts the listener's absorption of the vocabulary. While I'm slightly skeptical regarding any claim that such music ensures better assimilation of language, I myself appreciate the melodious ambiance--in fact, I feel it pleasingly distinguishes "Word Master" from competing products; but a small minority of consumers might not react so positively to such (or any) background music.
Though I believe that reading challenging literature will always be the ultimate means of enhancing linguistic dexterity, I do strongly appreciate the "Word Master" program's virtues. While the still larger vocabulary range of the expensive "Success Edition" of "Verbal Advantage" makes the latter product the champion in this marketplace niche, the very affordable and pleasing "Word Master" can, in its own right, typically provide some reasonably considerable coverage of "new" vocabulary (or, at very least, much worthwhile review and clarification of "partially acquired"--i.e., "passive"--vocabulary). And its agreeable background music incidentally makes "Word Master" a gratifying bedtime soporific, not to mention a soothing audio for those middle-of-the-night junctures when you're having trouble getting back to sleep.
I highly recommend this inexpensive, well-produced "coach in a box"!
***
P.S.: I also enjoy the "Word Smart" series of CD-ROMs (compatible with both Windows and Macintosh computers).
Wordmaster: Improve Your Word Power (Your Coach in a Box).......2006-08-30
This learning toolkit is absolutely fantastic. I played it in the car with my husband and we both learnt a lot in the 45 minute drive. I would recommend to get the most benefit that you sit down at a set time with the CD, pen and paper and get learning. Great facility.

TEACHING ENGLISH OVERSEAS: A GUIDE FOR AMERICANS/CANADIANS.......2007-09-09
After reading the book, I found it very informative and would suggest the reading to any prospective ESL teachers that want to be informed of the industry. The only thing I didn't particularly care for was the author was rather biased when it came to the CELTA program. He never mentioned the actual names of other teacher training courses. Since I am taking the CELTA anyways, I still give this author an A+++++ since he is an experiened TEFL professional who seems to be quite knowledgeable and notable individual in the industry. Thumbs up!!!
The bible of overseas English jobs: job hunting, EFL training, and numerous practical considerations.......2006-01-20
I'm currently finishing up a master's degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), and checked out "Teaching English Overseas" to aid me in my job quest. It is absolutely loaded with helpful information, from choosing a TEFL certificate/TESOL program, to how to market yourself overseas(including a step-by-step guide to creating an ESL resume), preparing for interviews, researching your potential employers, where to find jobs, and what to expect.
In addition, there are sections devoted to job outlooks by region (very few opportunities in EU countries for those without an EU passport, although thousands of North Americans teach illegally, limited jobs in parts of Africa and the Middle East). Your best bet is to try for former Eastern Bloc countries (Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Croatia, etc.) and Asia (Japan, China, Taiwan, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam). Mexico is also a good source for those looking for something closer to home.
"Teaching English Overseas" also includes sections devoted to legalities, practicalities, and health concerns, dealing with culture shock, your first weeks overseas, and a very thorough appendix that covers TEFL certificate programs in Canada, the USA, and abroad, along with TEFL books, lists of overseas employers (with email and addresses), TEFL job websites, international programs and employers, and a "test your knowledge of English" section to give you an idea of what grammar points employers expect you to be able to explain.
This is an absolute necessity for anyone considering teaching English abroad, whether you have no TEFL experience or you already have an advanced TESOL degree.
This book will save you a lot of work.......2005-06-21
Like most nonfiction books, much of this book's content could be gained from other sources. But you know how long it can take to find information on the Internet, and how unreliable much of that info is. Reading this book will save you many, many hours of web surfing -- and you can be sure that the advice in the book is from someone who is a very experienced and respected figure in the field of teaching English.
I first used the book about three years ago, when I was just thinking about teaching abroad. I found it really helpful: It answered my questions, it directed me to a good TESOL certificate program, and it led me to a good job in Mexico. After I got back to the US, I used the book again to help me find and secure a good job in China.
So I give the book five stars and think it's well worth the money.
I want to give it NO STARS .......2005-06-08
If you want someone to publish your PRIVATE email address WITHOUT permission and to give false information about you, buy this book. I recently found out why for the last 2 years I have been getting resumes from people wanting to work in Korea sent to me. My email address was published in this book and I was listed as a recruiter for Korea which is not at all true. If the author had contacted me by email, he would have found this out, but NO, he had to do SHODDY work and also NEVER contacted me before deciding it was okay to publish my email address without checking the facts.. Maybe he published my email as a contact to make it look like he knew recruiters and was a good source of information about Korea. If this information is false, it makes me wonder how many more of these so called contacts/recruiters listed in the book really are recruiters. Don't buy this book and support him... Thanks to him, now my private email is publically published and who knows how many more years i will have to deal with people contacting me about jobs in Korea.
A decent resource, but not indespensible.......2005-04-01
After getting this book, I must admit I was somewhat dissapointed. I thought that based off of the other reviews, it would be better than it was. It does offer good advice, however nothing that you can't find off of reading the boards on Dave's ESL Cafe, TESALL, or a similar web resource. I guess if you don't have access to the web it would be good.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Haircolor Book for Beginners.......2006-07-19
I am a cosmetology educator and I use this book to help me teach my students. Excellent for cosmetology students or some one who has been out of the business and wants to brush up on coloring . A little to basic for advanced professionals.
Great book.......2005-12-07
By far the best book on hair coloring that I ever came across. Covers theory and formulating in depth. It has a lot of practical examples, explains many problem situations and remedies.
The only possible drawback is that this book frequently has to refer to your color manufacturer's documentation - and it is not so easy to find good technical product documentation that is level with the high quality of this book.
a reader from Georgia.......2004-04-27
This book is brilliantly written and researched. It can be read at all levels of background. I highly recommend it for the colorist that wants to be knowledgeable. I picked it up and couldn't put it down.
Boring !!.......2000-08-23
Not a very modern approach. Most of the ideas in this book would be appropriate for the 70's and 80's but not for today. The techniques used are all things any colorist should know coming out of beauty school.
Detailed, Fascinating.......2000-08-06
Excellent presentation of info for the professional hairdresser. Good for any level of expertise. How to of hair color and the WHY behind it. I loved the details...(for example, they explain WHY and HOW chlorine turns hair brittle and green, not just a boring statement of the fact that it does and some ways to reverse that.)
Nice photos, well laid out, a little pricey but LOTS cheaper than a class.

Customer Reviews:
Amazing.......2006-02-24
I am a writer. I have written many letters for all sorts of reasons, so I thought, "How could someone write letters for me?" And then I opened the book. It was as if I had written the words on the pages. Amazing, truly amazing. I now have in my library a book that will save me hours in thinking up my own original version, and because letters now require much less time, I will be more likely to the send one that may otherwise have been put off. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Buy Dianna's book. Letters get action far more than phone calls or emails.
Terrific resource.......2006-01-28
Dianna Booher has compiled an exhaustive collection of sample letters. From the busy person who just needs some help getting started, to those who find themselves in a situation where they know something in writing is warranted but just can't seem to find the right words, this book is a tremendous help; the letters are long, detailed, and anticipate many different possible situations you might be facing. Even if you think you are already a good letter writer, you will find good ideas galore. A very good reference book for anyone's bookshelf.

This book is an excellent source to have handy. In my profession, it is expected of me to formulate all types of letters. Book Description
Based on the Nobel Prize winning strategies of Modern Portfolio Theory and the thrift and sensible savings ethic that made America great - finally, an easy-to-read book on investments and retirement that cuts through all the noise and provides simple answers to the questions you need to be asking.
Customer Reviews:
Must-read book for any investor.......2007-04-18
Lays out the basics of modern portfolio theory in very concise fashion. Makes the case for indexing crystal-clear. Provides a useful guide to asset allocation and relevant asset classes.
My only quibble is that if everyone followed the asset allocation suggested in the book, which is heavily skewed towards small-cap value stocks, imbalances would be created that would eliminate the gains to be had from them.
A great retirement investing guid.......2006-08-26
I am recently retired, and an avid investor. This is the absolute best retirement planning and basic investing book I have found. It distills complex topics, such as modern portfolio theory, into easy to follow, easy to read chapters. I have bought a half dozen copies I have given to my kids and friends, and plan to buy more. This is a must read for people from college age through well into retirement age.
This book is so good ..........2006-04-21
... and provides such solid, convincing, factual evidence and research to support Mr. Davis' "Buy index funds only" advice that I'm afraid eventually everyone will discover it and stop buying any individual stocks altogether. Would that screw things up? I dunno, maybe not.
In any case ... Mr. Davis lays out a portfolio of index mutual funds for the reader in Chapters 30 & 31 that should optimize anybody's individual investment situation.
I've got a pretty decent savings now - But, I will say that I've gone back and compared what I actually invested in (since my I started investing in 1996) to how I would've done had I had this book in 1996 - I'd have much more than twice as much money, mainly because it would have eliminated my large losses/ mistakes. This just about makes me cry!
I wish Mr. Davis would establish a website where readers could ask questions or advice that may not pertain to everyone, like the advice in this book does.
Retire Early Sleep Well.......2006-03-24
Great book. This book represents the "Cliff's Notes" of 20 other books on individual investing. It strongly makes the case for a portfolio of index funds, with minimum expense ratios, and gives practical lists of how to implement such a strategy. Don't establish your personal portfolio without reading this book.
Excellent book.......2005-08-12
I have been an avid investor since I was 12 years old (I am now 53) and have read numerous books on investing. This is one of the best if not the best I have read on this subject. Steve Davis has written an outstanding book that presents very clearly and concisely the best advice out there for individual investors. He explains modern portfolio theory and shows how to apply it in a very practical manner that anyone could follow. I have recommended and given this book to many friends. I refer to his book frequently as I am preparing for my own retirement. I only wish this book had been available 30 years ago.

Even for a lawyer who does not practice in this area of law, this book is a must-see to help you get through the often times confusing area of probate. The book is well suited to the law in any state, and is especially helpful if you are the family member who gets handed the ball after a death in your family

The modern conundrum: while the art of letter writing is fast extinguishing, the need for expressive, impressive, appropriate letters is as great as ever. The result? A mortifying amount of miserable missives that sadly miss the mark. E-mail informality is all very well for one's sister in Toledo or one's colleague three cubicles down, but when one needs to promote a product or raise funds, seek a job or request a favor, effectively complain, apologize, or reprimand, or send a letter of condolence, the typically confident and competent achiever gets noodly in the knees. Write a thank-you letter? The prospective correspondent is suddenly busy cleaning his or her desk and organizing the office files.
All you really need is a template to show you the way, and that's where Harold Meyer's Lifetime Encyclopedia of Letters excels. There are 981 letters covering most every business or personal occasion, organized in 600 categories, and followed by a comprehensive index. From Declining Requests (subdivided into "Invitations," "Applications for Credit," and "Donations," among others) and Requesting Favors to Sympathy, Apology, and Thank-You notes, Meyer shows an array of approaches, discusses effective techniques for various intended results, and instructs you on which tone to pursue, depending on whom the letter is going to and what you're trying to achieve. The encyclopedia won't actually write the letter for you or affix the stamp, but it provides proven formats to help structure your thoughts, and smooth starter and closer sentences--typically the hardest to write--to jump-start your communication and end with style. --Stephanie Gold

Lifetime Encyclopedia Of Letters.......2006-12-24
I am a proud owner of this book and recently ordered one second hand on Amazon for a girlfriend of mine, whom I got tired of writing letters for. I have recommended it to many friends who assume I'am a certified paralegal because of my letter writing skills. this book is a must have for anyone who needs to learn how to formulate a letter correctly.
Mediocre.......2005-03-06
This book is mediocre. I'd expect a book on "letter writing" to provide examples of unusual and creative letters; letters that would catch and leave a fresh impression on the reader, but it's not the case.
The professional section is OK, even though the letters are boring, dull, and predictable. The personal section is simply dreadful: tactless and unimaginative. Letters of sympathy and condolences are some of the worse ones.
I'd not have bought it if I'd have taken a closer look at it.
If you're already a good letter-writer, then this book is a good tool to provoke your OWN writing. If you're not, look for another guide.
For a small business owner not the average consumer..........2003-11-27
I purchased this book thinking that the author provided a voice to capture my thoughts when dealing with merchants. Why I ever doubted my ability to write my experience with a product or services, I do not know.
I agree that this book provides a template. If you use a Wordprocessing software application it already comes with one.
I would not recommed this as a purchase for the average consumer.
This book is written more for the small business owner, who for example, is attempting to collect bad debts or negotiating for better pricing on business services.
As a template, THE BOOK is very useful.......2003-06-26
The Lifetime Encyclopedia of Letters has come in handy for me on several occasions (both business and personal). The book itself is broken down into categories, and within these are outlines, models, indexes, open/closing sentences, and example letters for each category.
The "How To Do It" outline provides you with a step-by-step process for each letter. This helps to keep your letter focused. The explanations in the outline is brief, and somewhat vague, but if you follow through with the model letter, you can see what direction your letter would take.
There are also suggestions for opening and closing sentences. This will help jog your inspiration. I never used any of the suggested sentences, but it did give me a clear idea of how I should open and close my letters. Many times, hesitation has been a result of not knowing how to start... this book helped solve that problem for me.
The best feature of this book is the variety of letters. Some are more aggressive than others, and this can be tailored to what you are trying to "sell" or say. The contrasts in letter presentation gives you a chance to choose the most appropriate letter for those who will read it.
The personal letter section is useful for the more "delicate" correspondence (compliments, reprimand, gifts, etc...). This book guided me with proper etiquette through some very nerve-wracking letters. It also provided me with the confidence to write more letters for appropriate situations. I have actually received compliments from letter receivers!
This book is meant to be used throughout your lifetime, for business and personal uses. My copy is pretty old, and I still use it. The letters I write using the encyclopedia are absolutely my own. Because I view this book as a template of standards, I merely adapt it to suit my own personal style and needs. I recommend it to anyone who needs to write a letter and wants to do it right with the best results.
A Good Reference Item.......2001-12-14
I'm confused by the previous reviews. It seems like the objections are to the CD-ROM...our copy didn't come with one. I work in a library, and when I have trouble writing a letter or more often coming up with wording for a condolence card (I'm hopeless at this) I run to the stacks for this book! I find it most useful for appropriate ideas not necessarily a complete letter. If I don't find the subject matter I need I plunder other letters for the right words...sometimes just a sentence can get me started. I've recommended this book to other staff members who have found useful information in it. I just ordered a copy for our professional reference collection!!! This book is a great resource, but perhaps not the answer to ALL letter writing ills.
