Good wireless programing book; ok treatment of other topics.......2001-10-06
"Wireless Internet & Mobile Business How to Program" contains a good discussion of the various elements of programming for wireless devices. The reader will come away from the programming chapters with a solid understanding of how to implement simple structures. The chapter that introduces algorithms is clear and concise; the chapter that introduces control structures is easy to understand (if somewhat odd in its ordering). The chapter that introduces Object Oriented Programming provides a clear introduction to objects. This approach, using several real-world examples, is a good way to orient the non OO-minded to the use of objects. It covers the different aspects of objects in the abstract well. However, it could use a clearer explanation of why developers should use objects instead of the regular, top-down structured programming they've (possibly just) learned. For those new to programming, this is essential.
The book is not really just a "How to Program" manual, as are some of Deitel & Deitel's other similarly named texts. (Their excellent C++ and Java books come to mind.) Some of the chapters, like the one on employment opportunities, are in danger of becoming obsolete quickly. However, overall this is a solid text with good treatment of wireless programming and other loosely related topics.

Solid introduction to the technology and how to employ it.......2002-05-22
This book is not overly technical. It's written to provide a basic, but complete, introduction to mobile commerce from a business strategy point of view. It helps you answer some fundamental questions, such as:
Does mobile commerce make sense as a part of our business strategy?
What does it take to implement it?
What have other done to be successful?
From the above the most suitable audience consists of upper management on the business side, marketing and IT/IS management. Upper levels of business management who are exploring how to integrate mobile commerce into the value chain, or develop a strategy for competitive advantage that taps into the proliferation of mobile devices (cell phones and PDAs) are going to benefit most from the following chapters: (2) Partnerships-the way to Success in the Mobile Era and (4) Corporate Applications: Aligning Mobile Commerce with your Business Goals.
Marketing will get the most from chapters (3) Consumer Mobile Commerce-Mass Market Solutions with Segmentation and (6) Portals-A Single Plate for Various Dishes. Another book that will serve marketing well is "The Mobile Internet: How Japan Dialled up and the West Disconnected" by Jeffrey Lee Funk because it provides deep insights into marketing issues, as well as how Japan's NTT DoCoMo became an international success story.
Both business managers and marketing will also gain keen insights from the case studies and scenarios that are used throughout the book to illustrate key points and show how others have successfully employed m-commerce solutions for strategic advantage or as service offerings.
IT/IS management will get a high level overview of the technical underpinnings, issues and factors associated with developing, deploying and maintaining m-commerce systems. The technical details are not deep, but are sufficient to gain a rough understanding of the scope and complexity of implementing and supporting m-commerce enabled systems.
If you are seeking in-depth technical details you will be disappointed. However, if you are among the target audience or have the goals I cited above you'll find this book to be one of the best in its genre for introducing the business and strategic issues surrounding mobile commerce.

Customer Reviews:
not a book for veterans.......2006-05-26
This book combined an exciting title with quite disappointing content to me. This is definitely not a book for those looking for solid analysis of the future of markeing and advertising, but just a laundry list of all exciting eye-catching gimmicks using wireless technologies. It looks like a cursory pachworks of materials from newspaper columns rather than a condensed book.
One of the Best Marketing Books of the Year.......2005-11-06
What does the usage of PDAs, cell phones, and the wireless Internet have in common? Not only are they becoming the preferred method of communication among young people but advertisers are desperately trying to find a way to reach them with their products and services without annoying them like spammers. In Rick Mathieson's new book "Branding Unbound," the author explains the technology revolution and what it means to marketers looking to capitalize on reaching this audience.
In "Branding Unbound," the author gives readers a glimpse into the future (and the present) state of wireless technology. The technology ranges from sound waves that will beam down to potential customer's ears, to grocery stores that use electronic shopping carts to enhance the shopping experience, to third-party services that will store your personal information to make your online shopping experience more convenient.
Mathieson explains that the entertainment industry is already taking advantage of the trend. Entertainers like Madonna and Justin Timberlake have already hired advertising agencies that specialize in wireless marketing and taken advantage of its audience. Now the more traditional advertisers like Cadillac and Absolut Vodka are finding ways to make their brands stand out to the young, buying audience.
"Branding Unbound" is a must read for advertisers looking to steal a glimpse into what could be the future of advertising. Though the author admits that m-marketing does have its share of problems like privacy issues, technology glitches, and a relatively small audience thus far, it would still make a lot of sense for marketers to run out, get this book, and get ready for the coming revolution. Rick Mathieson is a gifted and talented writer, and "Branding Unbound" at its outstanding best does for wireless what the Cluetrain Manifesto did for the Internet. Geeks and marketing execs alike will love this book, which is by far one of the best marketing books of the year.

Excellent cases.......2006-04-27
As an MBA student, I deeply value a book that explains concepts clearly and has useful cases. Well, this book is it. It has about 30 cases at the end of it, which is much more than other books offer. Also, considering the topic, which unfortunately doesn't get much respect in B-Schools anymore, this book does a great job of explaining the e-biz concepts. Overall, I recommend this book to MBA students in MIS/Ebiz/Ecommerce.
Learn all you need in 10 days!.......2005-01-24
Jelassi's book, just like his class, divided in two main parts. One third of the book (about 200 pages) covers introducing the key terminology and evolution of e-business, the e-business strategy framework and a road map for e-business strategy formulation with in 10 chapters. The rest contains case studies on e-business.
Strategies for e-Business is a very useful textbook for three kinds of readers:
First instructors, because of containing 28 real-world in-depth case studies which they cover spans from the grassroots of e-commerce, to the rise of the internet and burst of the bubble in 2000 until present. About 10 of these cases referred as examples in the concept part for several times. Also PowerPoint slides of figures and tables from the book and teaching notes for the case studies are available at companion website.
Second students, participants enrolled in MBA and Masters programmes. As an intentional student point of view I strongly suggest this book because of the ease of English literature that the authors used in writing the book. With having IELTS 6 or TOFEL 550, you can easily read the concept parts with in 10 days. Also there are lots of figures and artwork that is very useful.
Third senior managers, as it is starting from the first step you do not need to have any pervious academic knowledge about marketing or e-commerce, every thing you need is inside the book. It is something like a marketing book with the focus of e-commerce. Also there are lots of Financial Times articles provided in side of the concept part that beside of offering the reader comment from the business press to complement the academic debate it would not makes you bored, as if you are reading your favorite magazine.
Mehdi Ghazisaeedi,
MSc. student in Marketing and e-Commerce.

Fantastic Overview and well documented.......2005-11-11
Superb read, I especially like the 2 chapter Wireless Network overview and the Wirelesee Value for explaining complex issues in a straightforward manner. This book brings you up to speed on the industry, business value and corporate interest in the mobility space. A must buy!!
Good first few chapters.......2005-09-26
My objective was to gain a better understanding of the potential business value of wireless mobility. I am in Sales and new to the wireless mobility space. The technology primer chapters were pretty good with the exception of some Microsoft bias (one of the authors is a Microsoft employee). The book proceeded to go into CGE&Y's approach to gaining business value. Perhaps this book is better suited to an executive who is grappling with understanding how to quantify the value and is interested in purchasing CGE&Y's approach. I did not care for the bias.
Easy Read!!!.......2005-07-22
I enjoyed this book very much. Having a technology background, I knew about this topic before I read the book but I did a learn some new things. It's also a good tool to learn how to explain mobile technologies in simple terms to non-techies and business people. Easy and quick read!!!
Comprehensive, Must-Have Guide to Mobile Technologies.......2005-01-17
This book is super informative, nicely written, and easy to understand. I would recommend it highly to large enterprises interested in mobile technologies and to individuals who are interested in learning more about the burgeoning filed of mobile computing. Highly recommended!
A Must Read.......2005-01-15
This book is an excellent insight into Mobility and Wireless. Good for both newcomers and those inside the industry, I look forward to the next one from these authors.

With the number of mobile phone users fast approaching the one billion mark, it is clear that mobile e-commerce (a.k.a. "m-commerce") is the next business frontier. Authored by a recognized international authority in the field, this book describes the brave new world of m-commerce for technical and business managers alike. Readers learn about the driving forces behind m-commerce, the impact of WAP, 3G, mobile payment, and emerging location-sensitive and context-aware technologies. A comprehensive look at emerging m-commerce services and business models, as well as the changing role of mobile network operators, content providers, and other key players. The author concludes with informed predictions about the future of m-commerce.
Customer Reviews:
Thorough, insightful, and clear.......2003-11-14
This book serves as an excellent introduction to the field of m-commerce. It thoroughly covers the field in an insightful and clear manner. It has served me well as the foundation and starting point for web based retrievals of standard documents and white papers.
Excellent analysis.......2003-03-13
The book is a definitive source for someone who has little knowledge about the field of mobile commerce. The beauty of the text lies in the way the topics transition from a novice level to an advanced user level. The author has covered both the technological and the business aspects of mobile applications. One part that definitely needs to be mentioned here is the description of public and private keys for secure communication that was incredible. Nowhere had i read such a lucid description of the public-private key concept. The book is an easy read but extremely insightful. A must buy for those of you who want to keep up with the latest in technology.
A complete reference book for m-Commerce.......2002-11-17
I picked up M-Commerce as I was curious where the mobile computing market was going. From where I was standing, I see a lot of hype and was not particularly impressed with the early WAP based services. Although relatively brief, Dr. Sadeh have managed to provide a good overall description of the mobile computing market, past, present and future as well as presented simply and clearly the technologies involved, the problems that need to be overcome and the successful business models that have been employed. As a guide to mobile commerce and it's potential for profitable business growth, I would recommend it highly to executives and other interested parties who are either thinking of jumping on the bandwagon or figuring out how increase competitiveness by leveraging on it.
Good overview of M-Commerce technologies and service.......2002-10-22
Sadeh's "M-Commerce: Technologies, Services and Business Models" is an outstanding introduction to this, the next step in the e-business revolution.
Sadeh's writing style is very simple to understand and follow and he does an outstanding job of relating the material to everyday life through good, real-life examples. He cites current m-commerce usage in Japan and Europe and relates how it could be used here at home. Among his prime examples are NTTDoComo's I-mode, Nordea's WAP as well as vendors such as Ericsson, Nokia, and AT&T. You also get a good grounding in the technology and history of the mobile industry as well as best practice business tips that industry innovators have used to gain their competitive advantage. Overall, this is a great look at the technologies behind m-commerce and the various types of services it can afford.
Here is the listing of topics Sadeh addresses:
1. The Buzz Behind M-Commerce: Proliferation of mobile devices, personalized and location-sensitive services, new usage scenarios, etc
2. The M-Commerce Value Chain: Business models, content providers, aggregators, software vendors, equipment vendors, network operators
3. The Transition to 3G: 2G technologies, 2.5G technologies, wireless architecture
4. The Mobile Internet: TCP/IP on wired and mobile Internet, WAP architecture, WAP protocols
5. Mobile Security and Payment: Cryptography, digital signature, certificate authorities, public and private key encryption
6. M-Commerce Services: Information services, directory services, banking and trading, e-tailing, e-ticketing, entertainment, business applications
7. Next-Gen M-Commerce: Personalized services, location-sensitive services, global positioning services
Overall, this book is extremely easy to read and more importantly, a good learning tool. This book was used as the text for an m-commerce course I took during the fall of 2002. Whether you are studying this subject independently or whether you are an instructor looking to use this book for your course, you cannot go wrong with Sadeh's "M-Commerce: Technologies, Services and Business Models."
Highly Recommended
Structured, principle-based, & balanced between tech. & biz.......2002-09-15
I have been following recent mobile commerce developments from both business model and technical perspectives and found that this Carnegie Mellon professor's book provides an excellent introduction to m-commerce, including recent developments in Korea and Japan.
The main goodness of this book is that it is structured (not messy) and principle-based (not superficial).
In addition, the way of explanation of this book is reliable and balanced, so I expect the life of this book is longer than some other messy books on 'mobile' stuffs.
I believe this book is also perfect as a textbook on m-commerce or supplement on e-commerce.

Book Description
Recently, the emergence of wireless and mobile networks has made possible the admission of electronic commerce to a new application and research subject: mobile commerce, defined as the exchange or buying and selling of commodities, services, or information on the Internet through the use of mobile handheld devices. In just a few years, mobile commerce has emerged from nowhere to become the hottest new trend in business transactions. However, the prosperity and popularity of mobile commerce will be brought to a higher level only if information is securely and safely exchanged among end systems (mobile users and content providers). Advances in Security and Payment Methods for Mobile Commerce includes high-quality research papers and industrial and practice articles in the areas of mobile commerce security and payment from academics and industrialists. It covers research and development results of lasting significance in the theory, design, implementation, analysis, and application of mobile commerce security and payment.
Customer Reviews:
study the chapters on fraud.......2005-11-28
If mobile commerce is to take off, many issues of micropayments and antifraud need to be addressed. Hu edited this collection of papers which addresses these and other issues. These give a timely discussion about what might be the most pertinent topics facing hardware and software vendors wanting to deploy an application.
Overwhelmingly, the mobile commerce platform appears to be the cellphone, given the sheer prevalence, as compared to PDAs or mobile laptops.
The chapters on possible types of fraud attacks and what countermeasures could be implemented might be the most important sections of the book. As with other types of electronic interactions, like email and web browsing, fraud is likely to surface as a peril if mobile commerce becomes pervasive.
