For women seeking complexion perfection, Dr. Nicholas Perricone is the name to know; actress Courteney Cox counts herself among his many devotees. In The Perricone Promise, he claims that his 28-day program will help stop and even reverse the aging process, making anyone who follows his advice "look and feel ten years younger." Perricone says the brain and the skin both start out as the same embryonic tissue, so it follows that any efforts aimed at improving one's complexion will also improve one's memory and overall sense of well-being.

To this end, he recommends a three-pronged approach: a very specific 28-day diet; supplements taken morning, noon, and night; and his own line of "topical" cosmetics, all aimed at boosting the body's levels of "peptides and neuropeptides." These substances, according to Perricone, are not only the building blocks of the skin's collagen, but an integral part of the functioning of the immune system, and may prevent inflammation in the body that's associated with such illnesses as arthritis and heart disease.

Perricone's diet sensibly includes a "rainbow" of fruits and vegetables and the liberal use of herbs and spices, and shuns any foods browned or cooked at high temperatures. But unfortunately, some of the food combinations sound less than appetizing (typical snack: "1-2 ounces sliced turkey or chicken breast, 3 olives, 3 strawberries, 8 ounces water"). His eponymous supplements and cosmetics are also pretty pricey, but as far as Perricone's fans are concerned, when it comes to putting the brakes on the aging process, you get what you pay for. --Erica Jorgensen

5 out of 5 stars Great Diet.......2007-08-01

I tried Perricone's diet and it makes me feel good and active. He has done his research and is aware of the new products available. I did not try the supplements. I felt they are over priced.

3 out of 5 stars Ok I guess.......2007-07-02

It has a lot of great detailed data and things like that...BUT in the end it is the same ole addage that we all know: Eat right, Sleep enough, Exercise, and be positive. LESS Alcohol, stress, bad carbs...

5 out of 5 stars The Smart-Aging Bible.......2007-06-10

Dr. Nicholas Perricone is perhaps the leading expert on "smart-aging" diet and nutritional supplements.

His advice on the best foods / beverages and the most scientifically-advanced nutritional supplements is FAR ahead of any other "expert" out there.

Being in the nutritional supplement industry, I can vouch that what he says about specific supplements is scientifically accurate.

I especially like what he says about the nutrients Alpha Lipoic Acid, Acetyl-L-Carnitine, Benfotiamine (fat-soluble vitamin B1) and Carnosine as being the most powerful "age-fighting" supplements avialable.

For those of you who can afford the supplements...and some of the foods he recommends, I can virtually guarantee you that you will see & feel results very fast.

For those of you that complain about how much the foods / supplements / cosmaceuticals cost..."don't shoot the messenger" (Dr. Perricone)...he doesn't set the prices on most of these products - especially the foods and supplements.

The alternative is to keep eating the typical "Standard American Diet" (ironically called SAD), so you can continue to look and feel like hell, and set yourself up for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, macular degeneration and all the "wonderful" things associated with getting older.

He is sharing the science of "smart-aging" with you, so you can make highly informed / educated decisions about what foods / supplements / skincare products to use to feel & look your absolute best.

Do your doctors share this information with you?

1 out of 5 stars His skin products don't work. His diet isn't new (and imperfect).......2006-08-10

It hasn't been clinically proven that Perricone skin products work. My mom (age 46) tried them anyway, and they didn't work.

His advice to stay away from grains (and whatever comes from them, of course) is great, but not new. Yes, farm-raised salmon is screwed up, eat the wild one, but again, I knew that already.

And I disagree with his complicated "system" of taking supplements. If you just eat normal food, like vegetables and fruit, NOT grains and soda, you won't need supplements. The only supplement you need is fish oil, since farm-raised animals that we eat lack necessary fatty acids.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for fine sewing!.......2007-03-21

I learned more in the first 15 pages of this book than I've learned about fine sewing in the last 35 years of experience! I highly recommend this book to those interested in learning and fine tuning their heirloom sewing skills.

5 out of 5 stars Great for linen and cotton sewing.......2007-03-17

Fine Machine Sewing turned out to be a lovely book. I expected it to cover a wider range of fabrics and finishings, but it realy only covers linen and cotton. If that is what you are looking for, it is hand's down a great book for finishing lightweight clothing. It revealed the mysteries of twin needle stiching, and points out many ways to put realy nice finishes on delicate items. There are lots of close up photos to guide you along.

5 out of 5 stars Review from a beginning heirloom sewer.......2005-07-20

Since I did not have any idea of what heirloom sewing involved, I was looking for a book that would be easy to understand and yet include everything needed to make it fun as well as easy. I found this book an excellent resource for products used and techniques. It was easy to understand and gave resources for the products if you cannot find them in local stores. I would recommend this book to anyone who is starting heirloom sewing.

5 out of 5 stars Loved It!.......2004-02-11

This is one of the few books that I actually learned something new. The pictures are fabulous. I have used the wing needle hemstitch techniques many times. A fabulous book for all levels.

"A room may be crammed with hideous furniture, be painted in shrieking shapes or have the sort of patterned carpet that makes you feel giddy, but you have to rise above this and see only the structure that lies underneath," says decorator Nina Campbell. In Nina Campbell's Decorating Secrets, the acclaimed British interior designer takes you through the most integral steps of home decorating, room by room.

Nina Campbell's signature design is "layering," which means every element--the furniture, wall coverings, carpet, lighting, accessories--should complement each other and the overall scheme of the room. She starts with the hall, the first impression of your home, then moves into the drawing and sitting rooms, the dining room, the kitchen, the study and library, the bedrooms, and then the bathrooms. Campbell uses her own home and other posh London residences as her examples, but you may not have this many rooms, the wallet, or the will to acquire them; however, you can still come away with ideas for your own home. The style she prefers is lush, rich, and elegant but some may find a Campbell-decorated home overstuffed and ornate. Whether or not you're a fan of chintz, you can still find inspiration from her thoughtful process, her emphasis on harmony between function and aesthetics, and her insistence on a comfortable home in which you can have both private retreats and areas for entertaining. "Your home is an extension of your personality," she says, "and it is this that you want to capture when putting your decorative scheme together." --Dana Van Nest

Book Description

Interior decoration has never been more popular, yet at the end of the day few people achieve the look they envision when they start a room. Now renowned English decorator Nina Campbell shares the secrets that have brought her world acclaim, offering a step-by-step design strategy that will help turn your original ideas into a beautiful reality.

Nina Campbell's Decorating Secrets is a practical decorating guide based on Nina's unique "layering" approach of combining the different elements in any given room -- from furniture and lighting to pictures and flowers -- to create a unified scheme. The first section covers such basics as determining what you want out of a room, how to assess a particular space with an eye toward natural light and existing architectural details, and why rooms need focal points and how to create one. Next, she walks you through the main rooms of a home and addresses the key decorating decisions for each one, such as choosing the right colors and fabrics to create a certain mood, deciding what to put on the walls and floors, and how to properly position the furniture. This is the heart of the book and where her "layering" philosophy really takes effect. Finally, the last section examines the all-important finishing touches, such as display items and soft furnishings, that add a personal feel to any room.

Lavishly illustrated with two hundred stunning full-color photographs and written in a lively anecdotal style, Nina Campbell's Decorating Secrets is an enjoyable and practical resource.

5 out of 5 stars best advice.......2003-06-24

I just started reading decorating books and so far this has been the best one. It gives advice on what you need to think about before decorating and the specific elementS a room needs to successfull. This book gives you the underlying principles that can be applied to many differnt styles.

5 out of 5 stars An essential reference for every decorator.......2002-10-31

English designer Nina Campbell has rewarded us with yet another piece de resistance. Brimming with sumptuous photographs (all of which left me salivating), this book has quickly become my perennial favorite. DECORATING SECRETS is robust in every area, not just a few, and seems to appeal to a wide audience.

This book is more than just tassels and fluff. Firstly, Nina makes it clear that she is a traditionalist. "...I am not advocating the minimalist approach - anyone who knows my look would realize how alien that is to me..." Secondly, her sage advice is for appropriate for every designer, regardless of budget limitations. If the photographs are not your speed, then pay strict attention to her words, you can adapt the ideas presented to a home of any size.

In essence, what makes this book stand out head and shoulders above the others is the combination of Nina's elegant writing, her down-to-earth presentation, inspiring ideas and -- the details, details, details! She deftly explains what a novice designer needs to know before tackling a project, and then walks through the process room by room. She also addresses small spaces, a topic usually covered under separate titles. Most of the photographs are close-ups, which enables readers to catch specific details and replicate the looks most inspiring to them.

If you are confused by the myriad of decorating books on the market today, and are looking for that one book that you can use over and over again as a quick reference guide, this is one I would recommend hands down. I also suggest that you check out Nina's other book entitled The Art of Decoration. My copy is two years old and very tattered.

5 out of 5 stars Know Thy Style.......2001-11-15

I TRY to live like this. Part of the art of living beautifully is hiding and improving the not-so-beautiful. Nothing fancy about that. If you're as tired of pictures of spare, beige rooms as I am, this is a wonderful book, full of color and elegance and a variety of styles in an English context. There is a far wider scope of styles and accessories than in many design books, and the use of international motifs and accessories always fascinates me. If you like layers, color, and variety in a traditional to transitional style, this is a beautiful and educational read.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2001-10-27

With impeccable taste as always, Nina Campbell does it again! Full of fabulous examples of the best of British design, I loved this book. Buy it- you won't regret it.

1 out of 5 stars If you're over the top, you might like it!.......2001-08-03

I think if your decorating style is very "over the top" Brittish Proper, you may like this book. While I liked looking through this book one or two times, it is not one that I take off the shelf for inspiration very often. I didn't find any "secrets" on decorating in this book - except for putting fringe and tassles along the ceilings and in corners - YUCK! It is a book with pictures and tips you would expect to find in a five dollar magazine.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A New Look at Log Cabin Quilts by Flavin Glover.......2006-03-25

Log Cabin blocks are so versatile. This book introduces the reader to exciting ways of thinking outside the square. Production of animals, scenes and paletes of colour are examined and open the mind to so many possibilities. The block does not constrict you to sqaures, rather explores the sizes and shapes of the block, and the fabric strips along with the internal arrangement of colour to produce amazing effects. The magic of illusion and secondary patterns is evoked by the careful placement of blocks.

5 out of 5 stars Creative and Beautiful.......2005-07-08

When my copy of this book became due again at the library, I had to go out and buy it. This book is beautiful and inspiring -- Glover takes a traditional quilting style and completely transforms it. The pictures are great, the background text is interesting, and the patterns are definitely executable (though they're low on details and expect quilting experience). One word of caution -- this is not an intro to quilting or to piecing Log Cabin squares or to color theory, though she is obviously masterful in all three. Use it as inspiration, not as a project blueprint, especially if you are new to quilting.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Wellness Handbook.......2004-08-31

After reading a couple of similar books, I've got to say that this one is truly my favorite since the first time I gave it an overlook. The author smartly divides the book into sections that follow the logical order of a standard week day, from morning to bedtime. It's full of useful tips & tricks and also includes some healthy recipes that I've tried and found very delightful. This is one of the best books on living without stress and full of energy with simple & natural methods. Thank you Jane!

5 out of 5 stars Instant healing for busy people.......2002-01-15

I wrote this book because so many people said that, although they wanted to try different therapies, there were so many on offer it was tough to figure out which would be best. I have tried to give readers the chance to try aspects of each therapy out for yourself - so you get a really clear taster of what they entail.

The book is divided into sections covering each part of the day - from getting up through the average working day right up until bedtime. There should be something to please everyone (I hope) and I've included techniques from a wide variety of therapies - from shiatsu and yoga to Tibetan medicine and Reiki.
The tips given are all really simple yet extremely effective (I use them myself so I know they work)
I like to think this book is ideal for anyone living a hectic life and also makes a good present for stressed-out friends who might be a bit wary of jumping in the deep end with natural health.
I hope you like it.
Should I award myself 5 stars? It's a bit cheeky, I know - but I do think it's a good book (if I say so myself!).

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for today's world!.......2000-10-05

This book is perfect for people who want to better their lives but don't have the time to read a huge book on yoga, homeopathy and meditation. It mixes all aspects of natural, easy-to-follow (with great pictures) information for a healthier life. I really recommend it! (I actually buying two of them for as a gift.)

5 out of 5 stars Great alternative to Junie B!.......2007-07-28

My eight-year-old Asian-American daughter loves this book - Ruby Lu is a lot like her - spunky, likes magic, and is proud of her heritage. It's a plus that the setting is Seattle - where many of our relatives live.

5 out of 5 stars Treasured Memories.......2007-07-23

It is a joy to read Ruby Lu, Brave and True by Lenore Look. The author captures the characteristic and experiences of an eight year old child wonderfully.

This is an enjoyable book for both the young and the young at heart. It will bring a smile to your face as you read through the pages.

4 out of 5 stars Review on: Ruby Lu, Brave and True by Lenore Look.......2006-08-09

Hello, all you folks out there! You can call me StoryMaker (notice the capital M) and, well...I usually just start my reviews with "Hi, you can call me StoryMaker" or something but that dosen't matter. Onto the review already. The book Ruby Lu, Brave and True by Lenore Look is, well...great! We checked it out from the library and I didn't want to read it because I heard that Ruby drove a car even though she's, like...maybe not even 8 years old! But my mom made me, and I'm sure glad she did! Ruby Lu lives on 20th Avenue South, and she has a baby brother named Oscar. As the story proggresses, new characters will appear - very interesting characters indeed, that make the story really interesting! Lots of new characters are added when Ruby goes to Chinese school, suggested by her mom so she can understand her grandparents who only speak the languages of China. Ruby dosen't want to - she hears really nasty things about Chinese school! But soon she does, and she meets lots of cool people! Other people are also met, and the story just keeps getting better! Here's some lists to give you more info:

Little flip-book sort of in right-page corners (if you flip pages quickly)
Cool guide about pernounciation & definitions at back

CONS / Bad things:
Some of the illustrations could be better
The right-page corners isn't the best place for a flip-book
A little too quick-moving (Some problems are solved too quickly)

Well, that's about it...if I thought I could come up with a more descriptive review, probably...but overall, get Ruby Lu, Brave and True! Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!"

4 out of 5 stars Let's all ride in the car car, let's all ride in the... car?.......2005-12-13

My library is divided into five different reading levels. In the first are the baby books, next come picture books, and after that easy readers for kids who are just beginning to read on their own. After that come the young reader books (early chapter books in laymen's terms) and finally full-out chapter books. The younger readers contain the widest assortment of reading levels. All of them are for kids who are past "Cat In the Hat" but aren't yet reading, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince". Writing early chapter titles is therefore a monumental and infinitely difficult task. The so-so writers come out with countless sci-fi spooky books and the like. The better writers are able to synthesize their writing into a delicate balance between real life issues and situations that kids are going to find interesting. Paul Danzinger's, "Amber Brown" books do this brilliantly. And now "Ruby Lu, Brave and True" does too.

Ruby Lu likes her life. Who wouldn't? She has lots of friends, a teacher who's a magician, and now a brand new baby brother, Oscar. Ruby has problems too, though. She gets into a competition with her friend Emma. Emma has a little brother named Sam, and she and Lily constantly compare their brother's developmental processes. Then there's the fact that Lily's going to Chinese school to learn her family's language and she doesn't pick it up immediately. There's Christina, the mean girl on the street who makes fun of everyone for wearing Lily's dad's knitting. And then there was that time that Lily parked the family car in the principal's parking spot... Well, it just adds up to a lot of a problems but also a lot of fine fine solutions too. In the end, Lily meets her cousin from China, Flying Duck, and the book finishes off with a highly satisfactory (not to mention touching) ending.

Recently I was at a meeting where some librarians were discussing books for an upcoming Summer Reading Program. We needed to make a list of titles. Because "Ruby Lu, Brave and True" is now in paperback, someone thought it might make a good choice. Across from me a librarian commented, "It's a great book. But then there's that scene where Ruby drives her little baby brother to school...". This is "Ruby Lu"'s unfortunate and almost fatal flaw. For reasons that only Lenore Look herself could explain, there's a car driving sequence in this book that is jaw-droppingly bad. Not "bad" as in "badly written". It's written beautifully. No, I mean "bad" as in "thoughtless, irresponsible, and completely unnecessary". Here's the scoop: Lily gets to sit on her grandpa's lap to drive after watching her grandmother learn on the same car. Later, she puts her little brother in his carseat and drives the two of them to Chinese school. The chapter actually offers step-by-step instructions on how to get away with this. "The way to start a car is this: Get the car keys...Open the garage door...Put your baby brother in his car seat and buckle his belt fast...Move the driver's seat all the way forward...Move the steering wheel all the way down...Check your lipstick...Buckle seat belt...Insert key...Vroom!". About the time the instructions say, "Can't reach the gas pedal? Use a snow shovel", this otherwise fine book had lost me. I've left out the amusing side-comments that come between the instructions, but I think you get the general gist here. Now I'm not so naïve as to think that hundreds of little kids are going to follow Ruby's lead and start driving their parents' cars hither and thither. But let's look at the consequences of Ruby's actions. She's caught when she parks in the school principal's parking spot. Her punishment? Her father yells briefly and Ruby cries. So she gets a big hug and is asked if she learned her lesson. " `I learned,' she whispered, her voice slipping into dreams, `never to park in the principal's space'".

Now kids do all sorts of irresponsible things in books. Pippi Longstocking, for example, single-handedly defeats armed robbers. But Pippi is a fantasy character. Ruby Lu is a very realistic character in a very realistic (if fun) book. This chapter has her place herself and her little sibling in very real danger, get yelled at a little (the yelling consists entirely of her father informing Ruby that a car is not a magic trick), and then doesn't learn ANYTHING after all. So what's the result? The result is that when librarians around the country consider adding "Ruby Lu" to their summer reading lists, their recommended reads, and their favorite book catalogs, they'll remember this scene in the book and think twice about recommending it to ANYONE. I was so happy when I saw this book because I constantly get requests from parents saying that they want a book for their children about a "real" little girl. Do I recommend Ruby or not? How damaging is this chapter?

The truth of the matter is that this book is still remarkable in many ways. The writing is superb. As an author, Look has a dry wit that both kids and parents will adore. When, for example, Oscar fails to produce his first word for his beloved older sister, "Ruby felt her love for him getting thin around the edges". Knitters will adore the sections that talk of how Ruby's father was adept at the garter stitch, the cable stitch, the fisherman's knot, the basket weave and, "He even created his own stitch: the tofu block". Then let's consider the fact that much of this book is how small kids deal with their own cultural heritage. Ruby's Chinese background is so seamlessly woven into this story that it adds a great deal to the already amusing stories. Finally, there's the book's ending. I don't tear up reading books and I CERTAINLY don't tear up during young reader titles. Sure, I may have sniffled a little during, "Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse", but "Ruby Lu" completely won me over with Ruby's meeting with her cousin Flying Duck. I will give nothing away except to say that it's so well done it almost makes me forget the ar-cay.

But not completely. I do recommend, "Ruby Lu" and I do recommend it to my library patrons. It's just painful to read such a nice book with such a jagged jarring flaw stuck smack dab in its middle. My dearest wish is that right now Leonore Look is working and slaving over a "Ruby Lu" sequel. One that has all the genius of its predecessor and none of its juvenile driving sequences. I apologize for getting all fuddy-duddy on you here and I still think this is a wonderful addition to any library. Just don't get surprised by irate parents who clutch their car keys just a little tighter to their chests when the kiddies are about.

4 out of 5 stars I couldn't ask for a finer early chapter book. .......2005-08-09

Ah, Ruby Lu! Where have you been?

Ruby Lu fills so many gaps in my public library's collection. She is an Asian-American heroine who is not a supergenius, and God knows we don't have enough of those to satisfy my huge faction of East-Asian immigrant patrons. She stars in a short chapter book that most first graders would be able to read, so I can finally start recommending something other than Junie B. and The Magic Treehouse.

Finally, her author, Lenore Look, has not sacrificed style (or wit!) in order to achieve brevity. Instead, like the authors of the classic easy readers (e.g., Frog and Toad), she has seized upon the limitations of the form and turned them into an opportunity to trim her language down to its essential components. Ruby Lu reads like good poetry - spare, lyrical, and immensely appealing to children.

2 out of 5 stars not a good books for digital photo, but goob for adobe.......2004-05-27

This books is more focus in how to edit your photos with adobe photoshop, that how to take a picture. the author do not cover the diferents techniques, nor he explain how to improve the shot with you camera or before you take the picture, basilly the books has 4 or 6 chapters on the difirent features in the camera and then goes on in how to edit the photos in you computer. not a good book if you want to improve you technique on taking pictures

3 out of 5 stars Milburn talks the talk, but can't walk the walk.......2004-04-18

This is a useful book for beginning to intermediate digital photographers. The writing is mostly clear and concise (though a more thorough editing job would have caught a few typos and more than a few awkward sentences), and Milburn does a fine job avoiding geekspeak without talking down to his readers.

The cheesy-looking cover is a turn-off though, and a foreshadowing of the lack of visual sophistication throughout. The print quality of the black and white example photos strewn through the book is somewhere between mediocre and atrocious; there seems to have been little effort on the part of the publisher to ensure print quality and a modicum of contrast (all the b/w pics look washed out).

But Milburn mostly has himself to blame for the unappealing-looking photography. The guy just isn't that good a lensman. So while he knows his stuff, his pictures are only moderately competent -- and wholly uninspiring. A 16-page color section in the heart of his book is meant to show off his work to its advantage, illustrating different techniques. These pictures are well-printed for change, but their mostly compositional flaws shows that Milburn just can't practice what he preaches. The best example is his picture of a roller coaster, a photo whose surprisingly dreary colors are accentuated by what looks to be a mudfield occupying the whole bottom third of the image. Ugh.

Nevertheless, this is a solid and suprisingly exhaustive primer on digital photography. It could have been a great book if Milburn had had the modesty to use high-quality third-party pictures (even stock images would have worked fine), instead of uninspiring samples from his own ho-hum portfolio.

3 out of 5 stars One of best teachers for cameras; but imaging falls short........2003-12-11

This book would have rated 5 stars, if only a CD with digital images were provided for the part II "Digital Darkroom" techniques. An excellent text for easily learning a lot about digital cameras - and worth the $20 for that part alone. But talking about digital image processing, supported only by poorly reproduced black-and-white shots on greyish paper, doesn't hack it. Had the author provided a CD with practice images to support his well-done imaging tips, it would have been masterful. But words alone are incapble of giving you the "feel" for fine-tuning options and sliders in PhotoShop Elements or similar programs. The author does provide a website address that perhaps will have the missing pictures? But no, I receive a puzzling message of "account unavaiable; contact your support rep". Huh? Anyhow, even if the images could be downloaded, it would be an inexcusable waste of the reader's time, and once again no substitute for an included CD. Ken Milburn is an excellent teacher - let's hope a 2nd edition of this potential winner will address these issues.

5 out of 5 stars I don't know about Pro but.......2003-04-08

this is a great book to expand your horizons with your digital camera. I like the layout and a digital camera makes it so easy and inexpensive to experiment with all the ideas laid out in this great book.

If you have a good background in photography, some of the concepts will not be new to you, but its a great gift for someone starting out with a new digital camera.

5 out of 5 stars The best book I've found!.......2003-01-23

This is the book on digital photography for which I've been searching since first immersing myself in this hobby. Every question that I've been trying to get answered is here. It's like the author wrote this book just for me.

Book Description

50 easy decorative furniture-painting projects.

Most decorative painting books on the market are oriented toward the crafter rather than the home decorating enthusiast. This book is designed to appeal to the home improvement audience as well. The approach for each project is not to create art on furniture, but to create decorative furniture for the home and does not require the artistic skill and daunting materials that more craft-oriented furniture painting techniques require. Complete, step-by-step photography for 50 unique and easy decorative paint techniques, faux finishes, and surface embellishments make this the most comprehensive reference available for the DIY-inclined decorator. Techniques are illustrated on a range of types of common furniture including chests, chairs, shelves and tables as well as unfinished furniture, flea-market finds and the inexpensive furniture now sold in mass-market retailers, craft stores, and home improvement centers. With 50 distinct techniques, this book offers something for everybody. Painted furniture can look rustic or elegant, whimsical or sophisticated. Provides techniques to make new furniture look like a fabulous antique, and techniques to make well-used furniture look better than new. All projects use tools and paints commonly available and sold in home-improvement stores as well as embellishments and materials sold in craft stores. There will be an extensive basics section about painting furniture including types of paint, painting tools, preparing the furniture, and basic painting and staining.

3 out of 5 stars Great for ideas, okay for technique.......2007-09-09

This book gave me lots of ideas for painting furniture without a lot of artistic talent. A+ there. However, many of the techniques list one type & color of paint with no discussion of why or possible substitutions. Some discussions at my local painting store gave me more insight.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding book for overweight teen-aged girls........2006-08-14

I have been in bariatric medicine for 39 years and this is the first book for teen-aged girls that makes sense. This is partly because of Dr. Bartell's advisory panel of a dozen girls and partly because of her extensive knowledge of behavioral management of obesity. The book is easy to read and understand and is practical in her choice of subjects to cover. Healthy eating, understanding of eating disorders, exercise and management of family interactions that could ruin a diet are covered extensively and intelligently. This book is comparable to the one for smaller children written by Leonard Epstein (The Stoplight Diet) that is out of print now. Parents with overweight teenagers need to get this book and share it with their daughters.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended especially for any girl concerned by the rampant obesity epidemic in America.......2006-06-12

Dr. Susan's Girls-Only Weight Loss Guide: The Easy, Fun Way to Look and Feel Good! is a guide written especially for female teens that does not promote a fad diet, but rather permanent lifestyle changes to help one stay in better health. From avoiding family patterns that predispose one to fat, to breaking the control that emotions have over one's eating, to easy and fun exercises that are good for the body and easy to get into using as a routine, Dr. Susan's Girls-Only Weight Loss Guide presents basic, solid advice broken down point-by-point for easy absorption. Highly recommended especially for any girl concerned by the rampant obesity epidemic in America.

5 out of 5 stars A Mom's Double Thumbs Up.......2006-05-15

As the mother of a 15 year old ninth grader, I was relieved that my daughter embraced Dr. Susan's Weight Loss Guide. Of course, I would like to say that my daughter devoured this book, and then stopped devouring everything in sight. It hasn't been quite that easy, but this Guide has made a significant difference in the way my daughter views her body, her image, and her relationship with food.

The book's format is fun and easy to read, filled with clever hooks that grab a teenage girl's fleeting attention. Lots of quizzes and self-ratings allow girls to be honest with themselves as they evaluate their thoughts about why and what they eat, and their food/friends/family issues.

I especially appreciated reading the thoughts and feelings of Dr.Susan's group of young teenage girls with their own real issues. Learning that my daughter is not alone in the teenage whirlwind of body image and popularity made me (and my daughter) take it all in stride.

This book is a must for all teenage girls, whether or not they are battling weight issues, since at its core, this Guide offers the roadmap to a healthy lifestyle.

5 out of 5 stars Oh man did this thing help!!! .......2006-05-15

As a teenager, I could really relate to this book! It supplied me with terrific tips and easy guidlines to follow! Its self-accessing quizzes and answers were clear enough for me to understand what I've been going through, what's right for MY body type, and what I had to do in order to create a healthier lifestyle for myself. Dr. Susan did most of the writing, but she was advised by a panel of 12 teenage girls. These girls contributed some of their personal weight-battle stories and they told of ways they changed themselves and their views. I found that these stories gave me incredible advise because they were things I could directly relate to!!!

One of the most important things in this book were the eating and exercising/activity tips and tricks. Using this book, I was able to figure out ways to incorporate healthier meals and snacks into my everyday hectic schedules. I also learned the consequences of binge-eating, and how to control my portions of snacks and meals. I was exposed to several new stretches and exercises from diagrams and descriptions, and I learned how I could make exercising into an enjoyable activity - rather than one to loate.

Despite how useful these things were, I found that the MOST helpful thing for ME was when I learned that DIETS DON'T WORK! I had been trying different diets on a constant basis. Dr. Susan taught me that the only way people can lose weight is if they PERMANENTLY change their lifestyle.

If you want to know the 411 on how to change your life, your self esteem, and your apperance, look no farther than Dr. Susan's "Girls-Only Weight Loss Guide" !!!

5 out of 5 stars Light touch on a heavy topic that leaves teens feeling satisfied.......2006-03-27

Dr. Susan provides the best practical advice in an easy-to-read, easy to swallow format. Light reading for parents and kids, this will leave you feeling quite full, and happy with your choice.

The girls advisory board is a unique and creative way to let teens share their views. I believe this allows all girls to identify with the characters in the book...girls whose voices ring true.

This book should be in all pediatricians' offices!

Read this book and stop eating your feelings

5 out of 5 stars The best fashion book I've found!.......2006-08-10

This little book is the absolute best fashion book I've found, and I've looked at alot of them. This book helped me, a non-fashion type person, figure out what I look good in and redo my wardrobe. Now, I only see clothes I use and like in my closet, and I have plenty of clothes! Pretty great news for a non-fashion, short and not slim person! :)

3 out of 5 stars Simple IS easy, after reading this book........2005-08-05

Since I was curious after reading all the great reviews, I borrowed this book from the library. It is a pretty good book, but not worth the high prices they're asking on the used market unless it's autographed.

Good Points: Empasizes paring down your closet so that every piece you have works; lets you know it's okay to have a favorite outfit in more than one color or fabric (i.e. a "uniform" so to speak). Comes down on the fashion industry as part of the reason women don't look as good as they could in clothing (wouldn't be surprised at all if this is the reason the book is out of print). Emphasizes putting together "outfits" in your closet, as opposed to hanging your separates in sections (although if you do this paring down right, thinking of your entire closet as a travel wardrobe, then everything should go with everything, regardless of what you pull out). Great section on how to take care of your clothes.

Bad: No pictures, unless you count caricatures of the authors. No real descriptions on how to dress to cover figure flaws, just an occasional mention of some of the camouflage dressing of the authors.

It's a small, mass-market paperback and almost half of the book is repetition and/or fluff. One example is when they say that one reason to shop is to replace a proven (i.e. "workhorse") wardrobe item. An entire paragraph is spent explaining why one of the authors replaced a black turtleneck with a cashmere one after being dissatisfied with cheaper ones. Who cares?

Even though this book talks about personal style, as do other books, the authors seem to think that everyone is passionate about style--believe me, not everyone is. Some of us want to look good, but have better things to do with our time and money than spend it on clothing. Some things like comfort and ease of care are important to us.

Bottom line: 95% of what is in this book (including "capsule" or outfit dressing" is in other books, although this one does a decent job of condensing it into a compact form (but it could be smaller and then even more useful). I think the title is a misnomer, because none of their exercises is difficult to do. Get it from your library, if you can.

Until this book is back in print, I would suggest the following books:

Does This Make Me Look Fat? by Leah Feldon
Brenda's Wardrobe Companion by Brenda Kinsel
I Don't Have a Thing to Wear by Judie Taggart, Jackie Walker
Ready to Wear by Mary Lou Andre

and if you need color pictures:

The Lucky Shopping Manual by Andrea Linett

5 out of 5 stars Dying does not devalue your work! .......2005-03-11

This wonderful book is not likely to be reprinted, unfortunately, after the death in 2004 of co-author Olivia Goldsmith (which was the writer name of Justine Rendal, born Randy Goldfield), who died of a reaction to anesthesia during cosmetic surgery. That doesn't discount her as a fashion consultant, now, does it? She changed her name to suit her purposes, and she reassures us that girls who think their bodies are too big can change their style and look great in their clothes--we've got the power if we've got the nerve! If she wanted surgery and had the means to afford it, I say go for it, and don't let fear stop you. Better dead than afraid to go for what you want, and the people who criticize her for it can hole up in their apartments and tell the rest of us what not to do with our lives, eh?

Goldsmith and co-author Amy Fine Collins have written an empowering, witty, and even spiritual book in Simple Isn't Easy, which I got through interlibrary loan. Much of their advice sounds Zen: you can do more with less, and being a consumer won't fill your internal holes. I wouldn't have thought it, but I would be happy to pay $25 or $30 for this little paperback on the secondary (used) market. The strategy for weeding out one's closet is practical, and the concept of finding a personal "uniform," whatever it is, lends one a truly distinctive style. This was one of the better self-help books I've read. These women hold your hand and walk you through it, and you laugh and roll your eyes at yourself all the way.

This book gets only 3 stars because one of the authors had the audacity to die young, which frightens people. No, wait, it's still a wonderful book, isn't it?? So how about we give it the FIVE STARS it deserves!

4 out of 5 stars A COLLECTOR'S ITEM NOW, WHY?.......2004-05-20

I've heard so much about this book from adqaintances yet none of them have a copy. It seems they've all lent their copies out and never got them back. Everything I've heard is very positive and inspiring. BUT, REALLY, $64.37 (STARTING PRICE) FOR A USED MASS MARKET PAPERBACK? What on earth is so special about this book? Do you truly believe that someone is going to pay such a rediculous price for a used soft cover book? Come on now, this is NOT A RARE FIRST EDITION!!! There probably wasn't even a hard cover edition. I understand that the author died in the O.R. while having plastic surgery recently. Well, Dr. Robert Atkins also met an untimely death last year, but his books haven't sored to a such a ridiculous price! If there are so many women clamoring to get their hands on a copy, perhaps the publisher may be enticed into reprinting it.

5 out of 5 stars It works........2004-03-22

Almost ten years have passed since I read this book. What I leaned from this book stayed with me since then. I naturally started following after the rules and it became my habit. Now, I never have to be late for work, trying to find which one to wear. What a relief. It took me almost ten years to follow the rules completely. It takes time to know which style you are most comfortable with, to know at stores which items you are going to wear for many years to come and which ones you won't before you buy them , and to be able to dicard the items you like but do not wear anymore. Recently, I found out that it is even more time-saving to have a tailor to duplicate my favorite suits or dresses. (They are not that expensive, considering I wear them twice a week for at least 4 seasons.)
When I moved out NYC, I left the book to the trash can with my other things, not knowing it is such a valuable book. I only read one time, but it is lasting in my mind forever. This is such a book.
