Customer Reviews:
Manish Ajmani.......2004-03-17
A must for every Entrepreneur or anyone who inspires to be one. Easy to read with examples from real life situations. The book walks through all necessary steps for either starting or acquiring a business with all the help to avoid any pitfalls.
The book not only details on the financial side (wealth creation)of the entrepreneurship but also stresses on the social obligations of job creations.
It scores 11 out of 10.
The Entrepreneur's Guide to Finance & Business: Wealth Creat.......2003-09-26
The book is easy to read and understand. It is couched in a manner where the average individual can easily understand the various financial issues along with the 'why to use' the financial steps along with the pitfalls which will be avoided by using the recommended financial steps.
A book to buy for or by anyone running their own small busines!
The only thing better than reading this book, is to listen to him speak in class.
An accessible, all-around guide to setting up a business.......2003-08-30
Steven Rogers, a professor at the Kellogg School of Management, has put together a comprehensive handbook for aspiring entrepreneurs. Written in plain language that does not assume prior knowledge of business or economics, this guide covers all the major topics that entrepreneurs face in setting up and managing a business: writing up a business plan, compiling and understanding financial statements, making a company profitable, valuing a company, and raising money.
On the one hand, Professor Rogers has written a reference book that assembles much of the information that people intuitively know. In that sense, the guide can be useful to people who want to make sure they are "not forgetting something." On the other hand, though, this guide tackles many issues that quite a few entrepreneurs look down upon: for example, accounting. Professor Rogers not only explains how entrepreneurs should handle the mundane aspects of business like accounting, but also elucidates why entrepreneurs should pay attention to those aspects at all. In doing so, he alerts entrepreneurs about the kind of problems they may face and recommends action to prevent them.
Professor Rogers has compiled anecdotes, business quotations, industry data, and mathematical formulae (which he explains in detail), to write an accessible guide for aspiring business owners. This balance, between serious and humorous, and fact and theory makes the book both fun to read and very useful -- a definite read for those daunted by the prospect of starting their own business.
The definitive guide to entrepreneurship.......2002-11-18
The thousands of budding entrepreneurs in the world share many common pitfalls. Among them is the need for adequate information regarding financing their dreams and a workable, usable, and meaningful plan of action. This book, by one of the country's leading professors of entrepreneurship, and others, is the definitive guide to mapping a viable and long-term plan of action for entrepreneurial success.

Customer Reviews:
Good, easy-to-read textbook. Not not a great guide........2001-01-27
About the book
Based on research questioning about 500 executives who took IPOs between 1986 and 1996. So, most IPOs came from companies who had been profitable for a few years. After the collapse of the Internet stocks, the context is similar, but I believe such profit records may not be as important as during 1986-96.
Published in 1999. So, it has comments to imply "being first makes the company valuable without profits".
About the authors and their style
Authors are experienced in their job of bringing IPOs.
This book is not at all in the class of books by Al Ries and Jack Trout, but more like a text book, covering every related point (from text book point of view). There is no prioritization or difference in emphasis of the importance of various issues involved.
Their diagram on cover of book is confusing because they have used 2-dimensions to show a linear 1-dimension process, which essentially are their recommended steps.
Book's Message
1. Define goal/success. IPO may not be the best way to achieve that.
2. Plan and start working on IPO at least one year ahead of the need.
3. Many specific to-do items: · Revise salaries as variable salaries that include stocks rather than just cash. · Plan personal estates. Give gifts before IPOs to family members to minimize future tax liability. Hire CPA for this planning. · Hire Earnst & Young early. · Clean books of accounts-use GAAP. · Build strong executive team. · Start working like a public company at least one year before-that is-create quarter-to-quarter profitability guidance and exceed them. Create reports such as needed by SEC. · Build external Board. Create committees of Board members.

MasterGuide for IPO (US).......2000-11-30
Aimed at executives considering an IPO, the `IPO Value Journey' is also of use to staff in pre/post-IPO companies to understand about market perceptions of companies & ideal "success factors".
The lightly referenced, well structured chapters span: the CEO's journey; the journey's early vital steps; chart your transaction strategy; chart your personal strategy; create the winning team; complete your IPO platform; be the public company; the IPO event; and deliver the value. Useful appendices span: outline for a business plan; selecting the stock market; registration exemptions and resale restrictions; overview of the SEC and SEC rules and regulations; simplified registration under the small business disclosure system; and glossary.
Strengths include: the concise factual (dry) writing style; good use of exhibits and checklists; and useful easily-accessible content addressing legal, accounting, reporting, board issues (amongst others).
Weaknesses include: need for more sidebar success story anecdotes (which integrate the steps); mostly US focus; and relatively superficial analysis evidence supporting the success factors and `journey' metaphor.
Overall, a very useful working book, to be read with something like `Confessions of a Venture Capitalist' (ISBN 0446526800) or `E-boys' (ISBN 0812930959), for a fuller life-cycle, energetic view of the IPO journey.
IPO handbook for CEOs.......1999-12-03
I found this book had just the right amount of detail for the CEO without becoming tiresome. It gives a very good overview of the IPO process and provides plenty of recommendations to guide you along the way.

Customer Reviews:
The best business plan guide I've seen.......2006-02-14
Everybody says you must have a business plan, but everything I ever saw on writing one was a little over my head and confusing. Terri WALKS you through the process of writing your business plan. By the time you get done with her process, you're excited to start! She's very clear and down-to-earth, you don't get corporatese language thrown at you. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is new to the business world, but wants to get started.
Realistic, readable, helpful, and valuable book.......2000-04-21
It's so refreshing to read a business book with real substance. So many books published in the last years introduce or exploit a new buzzword, have three pages of interesting content, and then go on for another 300 pages of filler. As a result, I've become reluctant to read business books published recently.
But 'Working Solo' goes beyond buzzwords. Over the next few years Terri Lonier's book and her ideas will be an extremely valuable resource in efforts of many people searching freedom and financial success with their own home business.
This book is a gem. Going solo--in a company with your home PC--has never been such an attractive workplace option as it is right now. Computers plus communications creating a new fruitfull environment for personal business of every men/women. 'Working Solo' is the perfect guide for the new breed of entrepreneurs who will create the new products, markets, and services for the 21st century.
Thank you for the new path to the personal freedom and success, Terri!
Great book for budding entrepeneurs and then some!.......1998-07-05
WORKING SOLO is great! Budding entrepeneurs take note! Terri Lonier has compiled, written and devoted herself to the new business owner's lack of knowledge of BUSINESS by doing the work of several people at once. If you need resources and help with your vision statement or business plan get WORKING SOLO. All you need is here to be read and digested, then acted upon. She does more by including two appendixes for more resources. And, check out the last chapter: THE FUTURE IS HERE. This is not a magic "solve your life problems by going into business book". It's real, vibrant and helpful. Get it!

Here is the first really practical book on major gift fundraising. It is a step-by-step guide to ensuring a success.
Customer Reviews:
Worth the Price?.......2006-04-23
Good book for someone getting started in major gift fundraising. Also a good refresher for the old pro, but same information is availabe in other books at a significantly lower price.
How do you get a copy of this book?.......2005-05-02
I loved this book. It came highly recommended from another development director and I checked it out from the library. But I see that Amazon does not carry it. Where can I purchase a copy of this book?
A great resource for board, staff & volunteers.......2002-10-31
If you believe that the best fundraising comes from personalized stewardship, you should read this book. Sturtevant takes his years of experience in the higher education fundraising circle, and translates many of the best practices into a format that anyone can use. He offers a great understanding to the novice fundraiser (be they board, staff or volunteer) and really helps humanize an otherwise scary endeavor.
Even the seasoned fundraiser will learn much from his experience, though you may notice redundancy toward the beginning of the last half of the book. Skip over the stuff you know, and you will still be pleased with the outcome.
I've successfully used this book to help train members of my board and to aid in the development of a pro-fundraising philosophy around the office.
Excellant compilation of knowledge on donor cultivation........1998-11-03
This book was loaned to me and now I have got to have a copy for my own library! Sturtevant not only tells what he is doing he tells us why and starts at the very beginning. He draws extensively on other heavyweight fundraising authors so reading this book is really giving you the info from 3 or 4 of the top fundraisers in the country. A "must have" in any development office.

This thorough examination of the inner workings of the venture capital industry explores:
- Resources available to entrepreneurs, from SBA loans to angel investors
- Proven strategies for identifying and approaching equity sources
- Characteristics of a "superdeal"--from the investor's perspective
Customer Reviews:
Mostly fluff.......2006-04-04
I've been reading a lot of business books to get information on how to grow my business. Of all those books, this one is mostly fluff. Many of the statements are vague and ambigious. There isn't much for solid advice. Buzzwords are used everywhere (Do you want a "value-added investor" funding your business?) Numbers and statistics are nonexistant other than a few graphs that look like they were sketched by hand. The author tends to throw lots of questions at you to think about, but doesn't give any advice on the topics.
There were a few bits of useful information on how other people will look at your business and value it, but it's not worth reading through the whole book for them. They could have been summarized in a bulleted list on a few sheets of paper.
If you're looking for a good book on how to obtain venture capital, check out Venture Capital Handbook, by David Gladstone.
Good Book for Entrepreneurs!.......2005-08-20
Thie book gives good resources available to entrepreneurs that want to start their own business. A book you should also check out is "The Wal-Mart Way" by Don Soderquist, it gives the inside story of the success of the world's largest company.

Book Description
Professional financial advisors will prosper with this financial planning conference between two covers.
The collapse of do it yourself investing has created a huge market for professional financial advisors. Wirehouse representatives, lawyers, CPAs, and others are entering the field. While a few individuals have become wildly successful, many planners struggle to survive.
Success as a financial planner depends more on an individual's overall management skills than his or her stock picking ability, says veteran financial writer Richard Koreto. For the first time ever, he has compiled advice from some of the nation's leading financial services professionals into a single book. &Iun It Like a Business: Top Financial Planners Weigh In on Practice Management takes readers step by step from starting on their own to selling a practice at the end of their career. Each chapter features one or more expert ""guides"" insight from recognized leaders in the profession explaining how they did it successfully.
In addition, Richard Koreto draws on the scores of conferences and seminars he's participated in over the years. Readers will learn how to:
* Set up an office.
* Attract the best clients.
* Create a marketing plan.
* Manage a staff.
* Choose effective strategic partners.
Customer Reviews:
Waste of Time.......2005-07-05
I've had email communications with Koreto and found him to be arrogant, surley, and intolerant of anyone who doesn't agree with him.
Also, I'm familiar with some of his "experts" who post their drivel on Koreto's magazine's website. As a financial professional, I wouldn't want anything that they have to offer.
Save your money, this one isn't worth owning.......2005-05-10
One of the things a prudent business owner should seek to avoid when adding to the library are books that are the same garbage they've already read somewhere else. This book is a quick and dirty version of several other author's materials, rehashed and reworded, with some quotes from people who aren't high on the list of those one would want to emulate. Plus, anyone that quotes Nancy Langdon Jones on the first page as an "expert" on how to build a successful practice cannot be taken seriously. Dick Koreto has never been a financial planner, nor has he been a successful business owner. His selection of so-called "experts" shows how little he really knows about what it takes to survive and thrive in the craft of advice. Save your money and time, and keep browsing for more suitable material.

Koreto knows the financial planning/investment advice industry very well. He's done an excellent job of gathering the best practices from the top people in the industry and putting them in a book that is practical and easy to read.
If you are a financial planner/investment advisor or are thinking about becoming one, this book is a must-read. Regardless of how long you've been in the industry, you will get value from this book. Plus you'll just enjoy it.

Stash more cash.......2007-03-30
I consult to jewelers on QuickBooks; budgeting and cashflow. This book is very easy to understand how to plan 6 weeks out if you will have any money to pay your bills.
All small businesses should read this, this is EXACTLY what big business does and it's rather simple. You have to LOOK at it once a week, but very simple.

A "Must Read" for All Business Owners.......2005-09-12
Philip Campbell does an excellent job of simplifying cash flow management principles. Cash flow problems are one of the leading reasons for business failures. Following Campbell's easy-to-use program will eliminate cash flow surprises. This book is written in a manner that is very easy to read, comprehend, and implement. This should be required reading in all college accounting classes. We thought this book was so good that we bought a bunch of copies, and sent one to each of our customers.
Essential - Practical - Wish I had this sooner! .......2005-01-08
Never Run Out of Cash is an excellent book. It's easy to read and understand while at the same time contains exclusive methods for managing money that I've not seen anywhere else before. Mr. Campbell doesn't waste the reader's time with empty or simply regurgitated financial advice that you can get anywhere, like many books. His tips are accessible and easy to implement. I really wish I had his methods earlier in my entrepreneurial pursuits - would have saved me a tremendous amount of wasted time and energy and more importantly, I believe that many of the poor money mistakes I made in business, would have been different if I had known what I know now, after reading this book. Simple and Essential - that's what I'd call this excellent book!
Wow! This is a really great book on cash flow!.......2004-10-05
"My profit & loss sheet say I made money...but where is it"? This book shows in simple, easy to understand language how to "get a handle" on the cash flow of a business. Profits don't mean much in the day to day operation of a business if you can't manage the flow of cash, an integral part of the business. This book lays out the most direct, simple, rules on how to do just that.
Thanks to the writer for making my life easier.
Finally, cash flow anyone can understand.......2004-09-20
This is an excellent book for any business owner/manager wanting to understand and get control of their cash flow before it controls you. This book makes a difficult subject easy to understand and provides invaluable tools to get control of the cash flow. You don't have to be an accountant to understand the practical steps and easy to follow ideas presented.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone ready to grow their business and to eliminate cash flow worries. This book teaches how to understand your cash flow and the importance in projecting your cash flow so the business can flourish and grow at the "right" pace.
