Composition teachers throughout the English-speaking world have been pushing this book on their students since it was first published in 1957. Co-author White later revised it, and it remains the most compact and lucid handbook we have for matters of basic principles of composition, grammar, word usage and misusage, and writing style.
Book Description
This is the braille version of the timeless reference book. According to the St. Louis Dispatch, this "excellent book, which should go off to college with every freshman, is recognized as the best book of its kind we have." It should be the ". . . daily companion of anyone who writes for a living and, for that matter, anyone who writes at all" (Greensboro Daily New). "No book in shorter space, with fewer words, will help any writer more than this persistent little volume" (The Boston Globe). Two volumes in braille.

A very good tool.......2007-10-17
This book is an excellent tool for those who want to learn in a practical way the essentials of writing. Whether you write for science, art, or any other area of investigation; this book will help you giving tips and showing with detailed examples the most common situations while you write. I recommend the book to those who want writing as a way of expressing their ideas and to those who are not conformists and like to go further in life.
This book is: Easy to read, practical, and helpful.
The Elements of Style.......2007-09-25
The book was in wonderful condition. It arrived in a timely manner. I would buy from you again.
Great guide for writers of all ages.......2007-09-25
My son's teacher recommended this book when he was in middle school. He still refers to it in college as he pursues his writing career. My daughter needed her own copy for school because her brother wouldn't give his up! You really can't go wrong with this book.
Good book........2007-09-07
It is good book, but you might find some styles are repeating with other books. It is good to learn from this author, but I also suggest learn more from other authors, too.
Read it, Then Read It Again.......2007-09-06
This itsy bitsy tome is an ageless classic. I read it for the first time 20 years ago. Despite having never found grammar interesting before, I became hooked on the sharp little lessons. I read it again, to both delight and edification. And I'll read it once more, to remind myself of the rules that make English what it is and to smile at Prof. Strunk, long gone but very much alive in these pugnacious 80 pages. He's somehow managed to boil down the bones of the language and give you the absolute essentials. If you haven't read it, you're in for a treat and a pleasant surprise, especially if you don't care for grammar. This is truly short and sweet.

Crystal Reports XI The Complete Reference.......2007-10-10
Crystal Reports XI: The Complete Reference (Complete Reference Series)
So far I have found it useful on the job.
Of course, it could have more examples at a level a step or two above the obvious.
Excellent Resource for the Seasoned Professional.......2007-08-31
This book provides an excellent reference for Crystal Reports developers. If you utilized Business Intelligence's online training and did not receive any of the handouts or materials, this book covers not only what was taight in the courses but more detailed examples. This is a great resource even for the experienced developer.
Great reference book for any serious Crystal developer.......2007-04-28
I have worked with Crystal Reports since version 8.5 and for about 4 years now. I am currently a Crystal Reports developer and create reports all day for my job. This book is a great tool for learning and provides me access to all the Crystal Syntax functions and other hard to reference materials. This book is also very in-depth and will provide a total knowledge to someone just learning.
The hardest thing with Crystal is that buidling reports is more an art form then science considering the vast amount of options the developer has to solve any given business problem. The best way to learn is get this book and dive in to making reports.
crystal ix review.......2006-07-08
Great book, am learning on my own crystal reports and this book has met my needs and expectations.
Standard Revision of Solid Reference.......2006-06-15
The text is one of the first available for Crystal Reports XI, and is largely a revision of the same material which has been presented in previous editions (which covered earlier versions of Crystal Reports). As you would expect, it does a solid job of covering all the basics. It even goes into some intermediate details in a few sections.
If you are a beginner to Crystal Reports, then the book will be a valuable reference to you. If you're an experienced Crystal Reports developer or you have used previous versions of Crystal Reports, then this book will not get much use. The book does not have many "hints" or "secret tips" that make developing in Crystal Reports easier. However, the amount of material covered is good in that there is not much left out entirely, so even an advanced developer will find bits of useful information, particularly when using Crystal Reports in new ways or on new platforms, etc. For example, the new features presented in Crystal Reports XI are covered in considerable detail, particularly the various methods of implementing new report parameter features. And, thankfully, the sections detailing now-deprecated software components have been removed or minimized.
If you're familiar with the earlier renditions of this book (i.e., for Crystal Reports version 10, etc.), then you will find this rendition exactly as expected.

good.......2007-09-16
a good book to get your feet wet. my first 'for dummies' book. I felt a tad foolish buying this, having written loads of programs in the last 18 years, but this book was very helpful getting me started on crystal reports.
Crystal Reports 10- Yay!.......2007-06-14
This is not an intuitive program for me to use for reports and documents, but the book gave me some good pointers.
The For Dummies Approach applied to Crystal Reports.......2007-03-11
The computer was going to eliminate paperwork. That's why Crystal Reports has sold about 13 million copies. Simply put, Crystal Reports is a database report writer.
Most of the data a business wants to look at is maintained in a database. How to produce a report that is customized for what you (or your boss) want to see can be done by going directly to the database, executing a query and then printing it out in a format that you want to see -- bah humbug. Who wants to go program all that stuff?
Hence Crystal Reports. Here is a program that allows you to basically point and click and produce the report you want. It's rather simple to use for a simple straight forward report. That's why Crystal Reports is included in some 200 software packages.
Now, why buy a book on it, and why this book in particular. First, if you've looked at the documentation provided by Crystal Reports you've probably thrown up your hands in disgust. Second, because you've gotten to this page means you probably searched for something on Crystal Reports and found that you didn't have all that many choices that cover Version 10. Third, this is a 'For Dummies' book. It is written in a style that most of use can read and get some sense out of it.
If you're just getting started, this is a good place. If you're already an expert, this will tell you about what's possible in the newest version.
Crystal Reports 10 for Dummies.......2007-02-20
This book is pretty good for a quick tour of the software and it's capabilities.
Dummies and Crystal Report.......2007-01-11
Crystal Reports has more features than can one book can explain, but this one gives a great mini overview of lots of items available. Well worth the expense.

An adequate reference, a good starter.......2000-10-14
I'm an instructor of Business Communication and this is the textbook we utilize for the class. I find that most of the articles in this book are good ones; however, there is a lot of repetition, especially when they are referring to the writing process. YAWN. Boring. How many ways can you reiterate "clear, precise, and to the point" as the main idea?
Otherwise, some of the other articles in there are great for those beginning in the world of business writing.
Book Description
Technical Communication represents the works of five highly respected authors, all writing in their areas of expertise. Scientific examples and assignments within a social context are used for a realistic view of communication issues. This is the only text to extensively address argument, including reasoning, credibility, persuasion, decision making, problem solving, and critical thinking. The topic of audience is also addressed more thoroughly than in any other text. The book covers the traditional parts of the technical communication course but has been updated greatly to respond to the demands that the computer places on communicating.

Very Good..........2007-06-15
This book covers all the tricks I've picked up slogging through trying to create pivot table reports for the company I work for - and then some. Boy, do I wish I had it before I spent all that time.
Clearly written and easy to follow I think this a good book for users of all levels. You do need some knowledge of Excel and SQL - but not as much as you might think.
Very good quick start guide, focused on reporting.......2007-04-15
This book is an excellent introduction to the reporting capabilities available in Excel. Prior to reading this book I had no idea that these capabilites existed. There is an assumption that you have access to a MS SQL Server for some of the content, but other than that I have no complaints.
Great book from basics to advanced.......2007-04-10
I have looked forever for a book that covers the basics *and* advanced concepts of using Microsoft Query as a tool to access data from a SQL database. This book is it. As someone who has learned how to do this through nothing but trial and error, this book offered a lot of insight on how things should be done and why those strange bugs appear. I highly recommend it.
Outstanding.......2006-07-21
This book has been tremendously helpful to me. If you ever have reason to pull data from a SQL database into Excel, you really owe it to yourself to read this book. In addition to being packed with great information, it is a very easy read. It is one of the few books out there that has something to offer to users of all experience levels. Highly, highly recommended.
Excellent Book!!.......2005-11-14
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in -- or who needs to learn about -- PivotTables, as well as Excel reporting in general. The coverage in this book is comprehensive, providing information on Excel report topics that just isn't available in most other books.
Here are just 10 items that I learned about from this book:
1. Prompting the user for parameters in Excel reports (Chapter 11): Parameters can be used with PivotTable lists or Spreadsheet reports, and they can also make the report run much faster and filter the returned dataset to a particular date range, division or product line.
2. Building Report Control Centers (Chapter 11): I learned how to build Spreadsheet report control centers that accept parameters and support a number of helpful functions, including:
* Automatic report refreshes when a parameter value is changed
* Drop-down lists of valid values that the user can choose to automatically refresh a report
* Specific field formats to ensure that the data is entered correctly
And, I learned how to do all this through simple, native graphical tools - there was no need for complex VBA programming!
3. Creating ultra-fast client-side OLAP cubes (Chapter 10): Given that I'm not actually data warehouse savvy, nor do I have the time to learn Analysis Services, Excel's client-side OLAP was perfect for me. I've been able to use it to organize data into dimension-level hierarchies for drilling-through data. And I was able to automatically rebuild OLAP cubes directly from Excel. The best part -- all 3 client-side OLAP cubes are covered in extensive detail in this book, unlike most other books on this topic which tend to just cover OLAP cubes in passing.
4. Hiding SQL queries (Chapter 6): I learned how to hide SQL queries from users in order to prevent them from viewing or modifying my report query.
5. Retrieving Data from OLTP databases (Chapter 2-9, 11, and 12): This book provides numerous examples of how data can be extracted from Access, SQL and Oracle databases, which has proved to be invaluable to me at work. And, this book also covers Text files (Chapter 3), OLAP cubes (Chapter 10), Web Sites (Chapter 11) and other data sources (Chapter 3). I even learned how to extract data from multiple databases - on the same or different servers (Chapter 6).
6. Fixing annoying problems with field names (Chapter 7): I learned how field headings from SQL queries can get corrupted - this book explained why this happens and, more importantly, how to fix it.
7. Publishing and using web-enabled reports (Chapter 12): This book dedicates an entire chapter to web-enabled reports. It shows how the best features of PivotTable and Spreadsheet reports are combined into PivotTable lists - and how to navigate through all the new functions, features and tools.
8. Restricting the number of rows returned (Chapter 7): This book showed me how to restrict the number of rows returned in a PivotTable and Spreadsheet reports.
9. Comprehensive coverage of PivotCharts (Chapter 9): This book dedicates an entire chapter to PivotCharts - and it focuses only on the important and relevant tools, techniques, features and functions of PivotCharts.
10. Complete SQL reference (Appendix B): I just have a basic knowledge of writing SQL. The appendix in this book was great! It really helped me fill in some of my gaps with basic SQL and I'm not writing more advanced SQL queries - thanks to this book!
The author even helped me out with a few questions that I had about using text files (his email address is in the last chapter). I highly recommend that you buy this book if you have any interest in PivotTable or other types of Excel reporting books. It's truly the best on the subject!
Customer Reviews:
Simplistic.......2007-05-14
I work in a CPA firm and found this book to recommend simplification in writing to the point of absurdity. It is a fact that there is a 'language' for business, and this book spends far too much time advising the reader to take complex or wordy phrases and simplify them to an almost moronic degree. While I agree that business writing is often overly and unnecessarily convoluted, this book seems to ignore a business-like paring down and instead invite the reader to return to elementary-school quality writing. I definitely did not feel that the book was a worthwhile investment, especially at the inflated price for which it retails. It is possible that it would benefit those in the accounting field whose clientele are completely non-business oriented or have little business knowledge.
Excellent for College Students in Business.......2007-03-08
I'm an accountancy major at The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This has greatly helped me on my group cases where I write memorandums and other professional communication. Writing hasn't come easily for me (like numbers have) but this book helps me find my weaknesses and gives me suggestions for them. At first I wondered why such a small book was so expensive, but the price is definitely worth it!

Crystal Reprots 10 - complete reference.......2007-02-20
This is a very good, thorough book with lots of examples included. I have bought other books by the same publisher and have been very pleased with all of them.
Best Book on Crystal Reports 10.......2005-06-17
This book has been an invaluable resource in creating and publishing reports with Crystal Reports 10. I've been able to give it to new designers to get them up to speed and also use it to look for answers to quick questions on new features. Overall, this is the most versatile book I've found on Crystal Reports 10.
Complete but not for learners.......2005-04-02
This book delivers exactly what the title promises. It goes through Crystal Reports 10 screen by screen and feature by feature. It is well laid out and has lots of screen prints. There is way too much verbiage, at least for this reader.
So what's the problem? The book desparately needs examples of how you actually DO some of the things it talks about in such detail. Crystal gives you some really nice sample reports, but they are all finished, not exactly easy to break apart and understand. If this book had some case studies (eg, now lets build the chart report of Quarterly Sales by Employee), I would have found it a whole lot more useful.
Come to think of ut, I would trade this book in a minute for something more task-oriented and hands-on.
Good review -- lacks advanced depth.......2005-03-30
The text is one of the first available for Crystal Reports 10. It does a good job of covering all the basics. It even goes into some "intermediate" details in various sections. If you're new or fairly new to Crystal Reports, then the book will be a valuable reference to you.
If you're an experienced Crystal Reports developer, then this book will probably not get too much use. It lacks the hard-hitting details that would make it an excellent standard resource, and it's shy on the "topics for gurus" sections commonly found in complete references. One thing that is good about the book is the scope--there is not much left out entirely, so even an advanced developer will find bits of useful information, particularly when using Crystal Reports in new ways or on new platforms, etc.
If you're familiar with the earlier renditions of this book (i.e., for Crystal Reports version 8.5, etc.), then you will find this rendition exactly as expected.
Book Review.......2004-07-16
I have to say I'm disappointed in this book. Normally I don't buy McGraw-Hill "Complete Reference" books because generally I find them lacking sufficient detail and depth to do any real programming. I bought this book because there aren't an abundance of Crystal 10 books out yet and because Crystal Reports documentation is notoriously bad, but this book has lived up to my McGraw-Hill "Complete Reference" expectations. I find the book lacks sufficient detail and code samples to be of any real use for integrating Crystal Reports into an application. Specifically, I'm working with Part II, Crystal Reports 10 on the Web.

Good but old.......2006-06-25
The elements of business writing give good point to look at.But the book is old and sometime give weird information. It's not an important book to have but, but still have some info.
Very helpful, easy to read........2006-02-01
This book was easy to read and very helpful in communication skills.
One the best guides for business writers.......2005-03-16
This book, with an obvious nod to Strunk and White (which it surpasses), lists 67 principles of good writing, with about two pages each of details and examples. It's on the short list of recommended resources in my book The McGraw-Hill 36-Hour Course in Business Writing and Communication.
A valuable writing guide.......2004-02-21
Remarkably concise and informative, The Elements of Business Writing: A Guide to Writing Clear, Concise Letters, Memos, Reports, Proposals, and Other Business Documents by Gary Blake and Robert W. Bly is more than just a tool for business people. Taking a common sensical approach, as opposed to a lofty educated tone, Messrs. Blake and Bly do not restrict themselves to business writing, in spite of the title. For the most part, The Elements of Business Writing is a valuable writing guide for just about all forms of writing. The book is strong on: knowing your audience; clarity; precision; and persuasion. When you think about those four elements, you're thinking about effective communication in general. This is something everyone--not just business people--can use in their daily lives.
Very useful.......2001-04-26
If you write letters, emails, business proposals or marketing plans, this book will be useful to you. It is very easy to follow. The book offers a number of suggestions for writing clearly and with style, and explains each point in detail. I used this book for a graduate level class, but it would be useful to anyone!
