Simple as a resume should be .......2007-09-16
This is the one to get. Trust me, I write resumes for a living.
Great Insights but not Quite Enough by Itself.......2007-07-30
I enjoyed the author's common sense approach to the resume miracles often promised by other books and resume services. Functional resumes do hide a lack of experience but employers already know that. Tricks with format and fonts might look neat but most resume reviewers are going to look past the presentation at some point. This book focuses on the basics, words that work, emphasizing accomplishments over position, keeping things simple, clear, concise and easy to read. But once you get past the large list of action words, there really isn't much more to this book. Personally, I like the formatting ideas in books like Resume Magic and the emphasis on using keywords which are often how resumes are filtered in the Internet age. While the author of The Elements of Resume Style seems to belittle these stupid resume tricks, they do seem to work.
Still,in spite of this quibble I'm giving this book a good recommendation because I found the information on grammer, fonts, style and basic format very helpful, as well as the grain of skeptism that comes with it. But comparing the sample resumes presented in this books and the ones found in other like Resume Magic, and putting oneself in the place of an employer, I think the visual formatting and style does make a difference. This book is a good start or even a complement but not the last word on resumes.
"Elements of Resume Style: Essential Rules and...".......2007-03-12
This is an easy read. The descriptions are concise. The author explains the reason for his suggestions. There are numerous examples for form and format. The one thing I found missing was how to set up a resume for those who have worked for one company for over 30 years but have had several jobs and titles within that time frame.
This Book is Essential to Getting Hired!!!!!!!.......2006-04-25
Mr. Bennett leaves no stone unturned here...he takes readers through each step of writing a resume so diligently that I feel as if he has practically re-written my resume himself! Throughout the book he reinforces the importance of being honest about work histories and teaches readers how to position job hopping and gaps in employment. (Now I can feel confident in selling myself despite the many detours I've taken in my career!) He puts readers in the point of view of the employer and goes into great detail about how to use language and visual layout of the resume to make the most impact. He supplies tons of descriptive words and shows how to turn terms like, "strong interpersonal skills" and "great team-player" into actionable statements with evidence that actually mean something to employers. (This was very enlightening to me!) He also explains best practices with cover letters, inquiry letters and replying to salary history requests...you NAME it and this book's got it. Mr. Bennett clearly has a lot to teach on the subject and I feeled armed with a powerful weapon in being able to re-position myself on paper and get myself hired. This book is a must buy!
This one is a Keeper!.......2006-03-14
I have recommended this book to people of all ages and disciplines. It has more pertinent information then any other resume book I've ever seen. It actually was entertaining to read, and provided realistic, hopeful solutions to people in recovery who struggle with how to handle gaps in employment.
I hope that it is used in schools because it is a great tool!

Simple, Great Examples.......2005-08-18
The books is organized into small chapters with great example resumes and a list of key words. It allow you to improve you IT resume in a short amount of time and even have suggestion on where to start if you are new to IT.
The Best, don't look further.......2005-01-11
I read this book so fast, the way it was written was so interesting and easy, evey single question I had in mind was answered, nothing is left! I loved the book, unfortunately I cannot get the Ace the IT INTERVIEW book, because it is not available in my area, but I would definetly the interview book too! by the way there is a very good chapter about interview in this book!
four little things i hated about this book:
- much more of network than software development ! but it is ok coz most careers are in Network administration.
- in a resume there was: Modem Software!!, this is called Browser...!
- adding Norton AntiVirus in an IT resume is something stupid!
- PHP and C-Sharp: top programming lanuges not mentioned in the book!
In the market for an IT job? Get this book!.......2004-12-28
This book's objective is to land you an interview. Before reading this book I could only say I had 1 maybe 2 interviews total in a period of a few months. After reading this book and using some of its suggestions I have had several more.
Overall I'd rate it a 4.8 since I feel that Paula is a bit too forward with some of her suggestions (for example closing statements on cover letters that are a bit overboard imo).
But that's my only complaint =)
No matter your position in life be it a freshout of college or an experienced IT vet who's looking for something different, this book will pay for itself many times over.
Ace the IT Resume!.......2004-01-15
This book is excellent!!! If you think your resume is good, think again. Follow the steps in this book and you'll see a totally new person. I used it in conjunction with Ace the IT Job Interview and it got me a job.
Absolutely Horrifying!.......2003-11-24
I do not know where these women got their credentials, but they are WAY off the mark! DO NOT LIE ON YOUR RESUME! No matter what this book recommends! For instance, the authors state: "If your offical title is Tech Level I, you might be responsible for database administration, PC support, and webmaster duties. If you're hoping to move into DBA, list 'database administrator' as the job title and as the first bullet describe your responsibilities in this function." Wrong, wrong, wrong! As a hiring manager and interviewer, if I discover you lied about your job title, especially when you were a Tech I and you claimed to be a DBA, I will wonder what else you lied about. And believe me, I'll find out when I call your previous employers to verify your employment history. No, instead, when in this situation, downplay, emphasize the job title you want, and even omit your job titles, and use the opportunity to emphasize your skills. That way, even if you don't have the right job title, you can demonstrate to me that it doesn't matter. But NEVER, EVER lie or deliberately mislead anyone. Then they'll just feel like you were trying to trick them, which is NOT very impressive.

somewhat helpful in organizing my search efforts.......2007-10-02
this book didn't say anything new that you can't find elsewhere or on the internet. but it surely saves me a lot of trouble googling by putting everything together.
Nice Overview... but there are better books out there.......2007-07-06
When I checked out this book, I was expecting some innovative method that would drastically change my approach to the job search. Instead, what I read was repackaged information that you could find on the Internet. Instead, I would recommend 10 Insider Secrets to a Winning Job Search: Everything You Need to Get the Job You Want in 24 Hours - Or Less. I found that book to be a more concise and thought provoking tool that helped me succeed in getting my most recent job as a Regional Sales Director.
Great Job Search Book.......2007-06-13
I have to tell you this book is outstanding. It was both very informative and entertaining. Searching for a job is never fun. And if you're fortunate, you'll never have to search for many jobs in your life. If you're not experienced at looking for work, the search process can be arduous at best. This book provides a structure/methodology by which to conduct a highly effective job search and helps ease the "pain" of looking for work. I would recommend it to anyone from a new college grad to an experienced executive.
At last....a book that "understands".......2007-02-05
As I read through the Pierson method I was so happy to see a job search method that combines an excellent description of the realities of a job search with a true understanding of the job seeker. Readers will come to know why they balk at the idea of a cold call and spend many hours surfing the internet. And they will also gain confidence in themselves, along with a system that works.
Pierson knows the job search trail and he knows what it's like to look for a job. Bravo for this wonderful book.

Focus, Structure, Accountability.......2006-10-19
The hardest part of a job search, at least for me, is treating the search itself like a job. Pierson provides structure and methodology to your search but also, and importantly, accountability to yourself through the use of a progress chart. He offers a common sense, step by step process that helps you create an effective marketing plan for yourself along with the not inconsequential side effect of a boost in self confidence.

Generalized but included good ideas.......2007-05-12
This book gives hints and advice for any type of federal job applicant. If you're seeking information specific to an agency, you will NOT find it here. However, this book has outstanding sample interview questions- I would have never thought of them but can see them asked in any interview. Also, there are about 15 different resume formats with tips on information that federal resumes require that you would never list on a private sector resume. All in all, this book was helpful in creating a great federal resume and preparation for general interview questions. Again, don't count on it for specific agency information.
If you want to work in the federal government, you must read this book!.......2007-03-19
Having read several books on how to gain employment in the federal sector, Kathryn Troutman has been able to succinctly explain how to position yourself for success in seeking a civil service opportunity. She shares her vast knowlege of the federal hiring process in a way that is easy to understand as well as implement. By investing the time in reading this book, you will have taken the first, probably most important step, toward being granted an interview for a federal opportunity!
Extremely Helpful in Preparing for an Interview.......2007-03-02
As a private sector executive with no Federal employment experience, I needed some insight into the hiring process. After securing an interview for a high level position, I used the "10 Steps" book to acquire an insiders perspective. Especially helpful was understanding how creating a "KSA" (knowledge, skills and achievements) document is important in presenting credentials in a way the Federal Government prefers.
Terrific Reference for Every Job Seeker.......2006-06-17
Kathryn -
You may have read so many times before, but your book "Ten Steps to a Federal Job" is a terrific reference for those in need of preparing the ultimate "Proper Resume"... even though it is geared towards the Federal Job Seeker, I used the format to prepare my Private Sector Resume, Job Qualifications Statements (aka KSAs), and cover letter... my new employer (an Engineering Office with clients to the likes of the Army Corps of Engineers and the US Navy) did not need to interview me more than once ... he had everything he needed sitting in one neat and tidy package in front of him during my one and only interview: and I got the job! I will recommend this book to anyone who desires to scribe a real resume!
Thanks again for the book!

If you want a federal job, get this book!.......2006-06-08
I recently completed my master's at a DC area school. I have spent the past year applying for federal jobs. I started off with the Presidential Management Fellowship (PMF) Program application. Despite a stellar resume by any standard, I was rejected in the first round. I think my lack of understanding of the KSA was the death knell for my PMF application. Although the PMF application does not refer to its required essays as KSA's, that is certainly what they are. If I had had this book before applying for the PMF, I am sure I would have made it to the next stage. And I encourage all PMF applicants to pick up a copy. It will give you an advantage over your competition.
After losing out in the first round of the PMF competition, I was pretty discouraged to say the least. The faculty at my school had driven home the fact that the best way into the federal government for a recent master's recipient was through the PMF program. Since this was no longer an option for me, I set out to find alternate ways into the federal government. I began by filling out applications for any and all positions on usajobs that interested me. However, I was never invited to an interview. I realized I was doing something wrong and did my research and found this wonderful book.
What I learned from this book is that the KSA(s) makes or breaks an application. I truly believe that it is more important than any other step in the application process, including the interview. If you don't know how to write a KSA, you will not get a federal job. Hence, the importance of this book. It clearly explaines the federal job application process. It starts with the basics, so newbies to the federal process understand exactly what to expect. The book provides brief examples of what a federal resume should look like. Finally, it breaksdown the KSA and explains exactly what it should look like. The book even gives sample KSA's so you can model yours around it. I found this extemely helpful.
So did this book work for me? Indeed it did. After reading the book, I applied its principles to an application with a federal agency. It was a position I really wanted, and I spent a great deal of time refining my KSAs. And six months later, I was called for an interview. A month after that I got a conditional offer of employment. I am now awaiting the completion of my background check. If all goes well, I will begin working for the federal government very soon. I feel that I owe a lot to this book. Without it, I would probably still be going around and around on the federal government application wheel.

Great to help you develope your cover letters for jobs.......2007-01-19
I recommend this any entry level job seeker. looking fro a little expert advise in there job search.
An excellent addtion to its sister book "resume magic".......2006-12-09
This book follows the path the "resume magic" made. Although I found slightly below "resume magic" it still an excellent reference to write cover letters.
All aspects of building a cover letter are covered in a progressive manner. The task of writing is therefore a lot easier. Examples are very good, and the author did a very good job leading the reader through the task of writing a cover letter.
In the end this book will definitely help you come up with strong, well structured and well written cover letters.
A must have for every job-seekers or just any professional.
Adapted for the times.......2005-03-08
As an IT professional, I found this book packed with good information. The overall style is updated and compatible with the times, and the many examples are creative and varied. Too many "cover letters" cling to the old school of "Enclosed Please Find" formality of another era. In these times, it's equally important to communicate some idea of your style and personality to give an employer a more complete picture of what they're getting when they think of hiring you - that extra something that makes you pleasantly unique from the 500 other cover letters in the pile.
For my field, I almost never use paper anymore for letters or for resumes, so I found the info on email throughout the book to be very useful. Most books I've seen barely cover it at all or the authors don't quite grasp its limitations.
I also liked the way the book analyzed the cover letter examples of what worked and what didn't, and why. The exercises were a bit vague but you don't really need them to get the most from this book. It's worth every penny.
Not for serious jobs.......2003-10-05
This book is decent if you're looking for a back-office/blue-collar type job. The tactics are very basic and the examples are childish and the format quite unprofessional. If you're looking for a real cover letter guide for the most competitive jobs look somewhere else.

Customer Reviews:
More comprehensive than other résumé/cover letter books.......2007-10-05
This book is more comprehensive than other job hunting books in that it explains the basics of job searching, professional résumés, and cover letters very well. It gives some advice on where to search for jobs, networking, and how to send in job applications via electronic and written formats. If you are only going to buy one book to prepare for a job search and the application process, I would recommend this book over several others.
The downside of this book is that it does little to prepare you for the modern inevitability of having to submit your application through a standardized and faceless corporate website. Any advice on formatting your résumé, writing a cover letter, or writing professional contact emails is unnecessary when companies force you to "spray and pray" your application to their non-communicative and poorly staffed HR departments. Nothing is more discouraging than having your perfect cover letter and résumé butchered by having to fill in standardized forms on the web.
Excellent Resource.......2007-01-04
This book was very helpful. It has a lot of examples of cover letters and resumes. Also, it has comments from actual hiring managers and some contradict each other. That is helpful because it shows that not all HR departments feel the same way about resumes and the key is to appeal to as many as you can.
Excellent Resource.......2006-03-14
This book was very well done. There are many sample resumes in the back and also sample cover letters. The content of the book explained what to put on your resume and cover letter and what employers are looking for. This is a great resource for anyone looking for some guidance on how to develop their resume and cover letter.
Excellent Layout.......2006-02-25
Excellent presentation of the material in an easy to follow format. Allows the reader to pinpoint exact areas of interest, and contains only information pertainent to the title.
A must have for writing resumes with confidence and skill.
Incredible Resource.......2005-09-14
I highly recommend this book for people who want a complete approach to finding a new job. The author took the time to interview tons of HR people at top-notch companies and share valuable insights with the reader.

Customer Reviews:
Not quite knockin' 'em dead.......2005-03-08
I used this along with "Cover Letter Magic" and "The Very Quick Job Search," and I prefer those over this one. Though certainly an improvement over the old "Enclosed please find" style, the examples throughout the book are still a bit stiff, unnecessarily wordy, and dated. There's also not as much variety as in the other books.
On meail cover letters, he gives a bit of misinformation, which suggests he may not be as up-to-speed on email limitations as he could be. Specifically, he suggests using a signature-styled font in an email. (That only works if the recipient has the same font on their PC.)
I liked the examples of "Resurrection" letters (basically a thanks for the rejection), but their use is never explained in the book, so there's nothing to suggest this tactic is effective. (The only mention in the other books is in "Cover Letter Magic." They advise against them.) My guess is that this would have to be done selectively and carefully. What may be seen as persistence by the job seeker may be interpreted by the potential employer as either not being able to take a hint or a desperate need to have the last word.
It's an okay book, particularly if your personal style is somewhat formal and "old school," but it's not worthy of its title.
Great info!.......2001-05-09
Lots and lots of cover letters, styles and information. Very helpful!
BRAVO>>>>Well done maestro!!!.......2000-10-06
Excellent book it showed me all I needed to write the perfect cover letter and it was incredibly easy to read and showed excellent examples of all different types of job seeking situations. I highly recommend this to anyone...from professionals to those seeking part-time employment, well done Mr. Yate!
You need this book!.......2000-09-08
I used this book when I was job searching during my senior year of college. I read it cover to cover, and followed the author's advice. I was highly successful in my job search, landing my dream job. I was even complimented several times on my "very creative" cover letter. You can't go wrong with this book!
Letters are all the same and don't offer much variety.......1999-01-20
I think the letters in this book are just average, and they focus on me, me, me. There is nothing that helps the writer craft a letter to meet the needs of the employer. A good title, but this books misses the mark.

Helpful for the cover letter 'rookie'.......2007-01-26
101 Best Cover Letters is a good buy if you are struggling with putting together just the right words for a great cover letter. Gives some "common sense" tips, but also a variety of styles (i.e. responding to classified ad, how to incorporate a reference, specific careers) for your letter. Obviously you still have to make your cover leter your own, but this book definitely helps get the wheels turning.
101 Flattering cover letters for sycophants.......2006-06-16
The example letters are uniformly dreadful. Marginal grammar and usage combine with a sacherine style aimed at kissing up to second-raters. These letters are guaranteed to repell anyone with whom one would really like to work.
GREAT Book, BUT NOT in Digital Format.......2004-02-12
Great examples of cover letters with explanation of what makes them great, but I only know this because I bought the printed version after not being able to read the examples AT ALL in the downloaded digital version. I even tried reading on a 19" high resolution monitor using the PC version of Microsoft Reader, .
The problem is that even though Microsoft Reader allows one to change the fonts of the print to suit the reader, scanned images like ALL the cover letter examples are not scalable, so it is impossible to distinguish an e from an o, l from an i, and so on.
Amazon should not sell books with graphics and fixed images in digital format, or at least should warn customers of the issue before they pay to download a book in digital format that has over 70% in unscalable, unreadable format.
GREAT FOR THE NEWBIES or EXPERTS OUT THERE!.......2003-06-08
This book was a great investment! The cover letters give you examples to use in your own letter and show you the strengths found in each cover. I actually took a highlighter to this book and highlighted my favorite lines and ideas out of certain letters. I then implemented them into my letter. Great for everyone, the professional or the inexperienced. YOU NEED THIS BOOK!
I was very disappointed with this purchase........2002-08-28
I was very disappointed with this purchase. The only subject the letters cover is for use in getting a job. If I had known that it was strictly targeting getting a job I would have never purchased this. I was looking for a book that had a variety of letters you would find useful in the business world, not getting a job.
Book Description
A 192-page book, Real-Resumes for Teachers shows actual resumes and cover letters that helped real teachers, counselors, and administrators find new jobs and advance in their field. By tradition, teaching professionals use either a one-page resume or a lengthier curriculum vitae (CV) when they seek new positions or advance in their field, and this book provides insight into the most effective formats for the popular one-page resume as well as the lengthier CV. Real-Resumes for Teachers is designed to show the most effective formats which can be used by professionals in the teaching field to present their credentials and qualifications. The Table of Contents is designed to show individuals in varying roles in the teaching and education field. Resumes and CVs are shown of administrators, assistant principals, teachers in child care and social services environments, college teachers and professors, counselors and librarians, elementary school teachers, high school te! achers, as well as military science and ROTC instructors. There are resumes of teachers embarking on a second career in teaching, and there is even a section focusing on teachers changing careers from teaching to a new field. Since all resumes and cover letters were used by actual people in real job campaigns, each resume and its companion cover letter shown is a picture of a successful job hunt, and the theory behind the book is that a picture is worth a thousand words. Real-Resumes Series editor Anne McKinney has handpicked these resumes and cover letters based on her 20 years of experience in working with teachers. Other titles in the series being released in the year 2000 are: Real-Resumes for Career Changers, Real-Resumes for Students, Real-Resumes for Sales, and Real Essays for College & Grad School.
Customer Reviews:
Honestly - this is the #2 source for you. .......2007-04-27
This book has some great advice in it along with some excellent cover letters. The resumes are very professional in appearance, but the layouts really aren't that interesting. This is definitely an excellent second source to have on your shelf! You should only need two books on resumes (this one and the one I've listed below) to get the job you're looking for.
Let me tell you, I have just read through four resume books specifically aimed at teachers (this book, the one listed below, Resumes and Cover Letters for Teachers, and 101 Grade A Resumes for Teachers). If you want the ultimate book, you should take a look at Expert Resumes For Teachers And Educators (Expert Resumes). Between these two books you should have all your bases covered!
A lot of help.......2004-01-21
I expect to graduate in May of this year and want to teach high school history. I have no professional experience in the teaching field, so I had no idea how to prepare a resume that would highlight my qualifications and experience that I gained from the office jobs I've held over the last 9 years. This books has several examples of resumes and cover letters from people just like myself. It has given me a lot of ideas.
Fraudulent Reviews?.......2001-03-12
I AM Chris Guin, and I can assure you that I did not provide the "editorial review" listed on this site. I am a former employee of Ms. McKinney, and while I enjoyed my time at PREP and feel that, in general, their resume and career books are of reasonably fair quality, not only do I resent their use of my name on a review that I never wrote, but I have to wonder -- in light of this fraudulent behavior -- how many of the other "reviews" of PREP's titles are equally fraudulent. Doesn't Amazon put ANY effort into verifying the content that is posted on this site?
Awesome resource!.......2001-02-28
This book is ESSENTIAL for anyone applying to grad school, for fellowships, government teaching jobs, elementary, middleschool, high school, college, and counseling positions--just to list a few! The essential cover letter and curriculum vitae is in there too--no need to buy another book! There is too much inside the covers to go over but suffice it to say I created an awesome resume and cover letter using the examples as guides. You can't go wrong with this one!
Powerful Examples.......2000-09-24
With a cover letter and resume for every teaching position under the sun this book is a must have. I personally learn from example, and this book is chock full of them. College professors; counselors; elementary, middle, and high school teachers in all grade levels and subject matters; and administrators will all find this book helpful. A variety of formats highlight both the resumes and cover letters. Use the best from the 180+ page reference. MUST HAVE!!!

Great Resumes for Educators !!.......2007-05-19
Most teachers do not know how to write a resume....this is a GREAT SOURCE of information. I highly recommend it for an educator who is needing to write a resume. Well worth the money !!!
Good resource for applying for teaching positions.......2007-05-13
This book helped me to organize my resume. It is a good resource for key words that are attention grabbers so that your resume will get noticed. I am sure I will use this reference book to help me update my resume in the future too.
This is THE BOOK!.......2007-04-27
Let me tell you, I recently checked out four books from the library that are specifically aimed at teachers (this book, Resumes and Cover Letters for Teachers, 101 Grade A Resumes for Teachers, and Real-Resumes for Teachers). If you want the ultimate book, this is it!
I was utterly amazed at the quality and uniqueness of the resumes included in this book. I cannot tell you how impressed I was with the various concepts that the authors have touched upon. This book is A-1, perfect for the 21st century teacher - regardless of where you are at in your career or what subject you teach (there is a specific section aimed directly to you and your situation). If you want to stand out from the crowd and get your resume pulled out of the stack of thousands then this book is the way to do it. Incidentally, if you're looking for an excellent secondary source check out Real-Resumes for Teachers (Real-Resumes Series) (Real-Resumes Series). It won't replace this book by a long shot, but it will give you some additional ideas.
The best resume book for teachers!!.......2003-11-19
I got this book along with several other resume books for teachers from the library. I thought this book was the best of all of them. It is filled with actual award-winning resumes by real teachers. The authors point out the special features and strengths of each resume. What I especially liked is that they focus on the visual style and formatting of a resume along with the content.
Using the examples and tips in this book, I re-formatted my resume to showcase my strengths and be easier to read. I had sent my old resume to someone in response to a teaching job he had, but I never heard from him. Still hoping to get in at this school district, I sent my new and improved resume to a different person, hoping she might have some openings instead. Well, she gave a copy of my new resume to the first person and he called me the same day for an interview!! I know it sounds like a cliche, but it really happened. My new resume got me in the door, and I got the job!! I highly recommend this book!
