Book Description

Selling Used Books Online is a comprehensive how-to bible for America's newest and fastest growing group of entrepreneurs, the sellers on Amazon Marketplace and other online venues. Author Stephen Windwalker, a successful online seller himself who has also operated a brick-and-mortar bookshop, provides a treasure trove of up-to-date information with verve, clarity, and wit.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has reported that the number of third-party sellers on his company's website grew from over 100,000 in the fourth quarter of 2001 to over 150,000 in the first quarter of 2002, and roughly one-third of these appear to be entrepreneurial sellers who are operating full- or part-time businesses in competition with each other, with Amazon, and with very large Amazon Marketplace sellers such as Powell's, the Strand bookstore, and Alibris. For these 50,000 entrepreneurs, Selling Used Books Online will be a powerful business resource that will help them level the playing field, stay in business, and prosper.

Selling Used Books Online meets the needs of booksellers and business readers who want to stay current on market changes, best sources, insider's tips and tactics, and best practices, and is also a essential addition for public libraries, the small business and entrepreneurship market and related agency and educational markets, and publishing industry and bibliophile readers. Back matter includes several useful appendices that online booksellers will use on a daily basis: a glossary, a list of standard bookseller abbreviations, a casual bibliography of resources on bookselling and collecting, and an online bookseller's "Rolodex."

5 out of 5 stars This book is a "must have" for any new bookseller!.......2007-10-05

This book is a "must have" for anyone learning to sell online. It answers every question a new seller may encounter. I just started selling online and this book has really helped me! I keep it by my computer and reach for it every day! I want to give the best service possible to my customers and what a better place to learn the "best practices" than from a successful bookseller! Thanks to Stephen Windwalker for writing this book!

3 out of 5 stars An Informative but Outdated Book.......2007-10-04

There is a lot of information in this book, particularly if you are new to selling online. That being said, however, there much information that was also missing. In particular, the use of selling aids when scouting for inventory. I would recommend Christine Miller's book for further insight. Her book really did take me up to the next level of my business.

5 out of 5 stars great great book.......2007-09-29

Lot's of useful info packed in here. I little outdate maybe as far as the online selling goes, but the info has so far been right on the money for me!

4 out of 5 stars A Good Book but Not Enough to Ensure Success .......2007-07-08

I can't complain about this book, it helped me get started. After running the gambit of get rich quick scams and schemes, I started selling used books on Amazon, and made more than $20,000 my first year. So, if your skeptical about whether or not this is a real business opportunity, don't be. It really works! However, there are some things, like the history of online selling, that some of us don't have time for, and so many of the early books (including this one), don't cover all of the tools available to help sellers find and buy top-dollar books. Because of this, a few years into my success, I ended up writing my own guide, to discuss things I found lacking in other books, sparing no secrets I've learned along the way. Windwalker's book, and others, contain many step-by-step directions, and sample confirmation letters, etc., so all the set-up work is done for you. But, I haven't found a book that includes real life examples, of successful sellers, and their business/buying models. So, I decided to include profiles of different sellers and their techniques and strategies, along with a comprehensive list of real book titles, and keys to help the newcomer learn to identify books that you can buy-low and sell-high. This is one of the biggest keys to success, yet, even after reading some of the best books available, most of us start out with a few paragraphs about identifyng top-dollar books, that are sitting right under our nose at used bookstores, Goodwill, Friends of Library Stoes, and you name it. I'm sorry to ultimately be plugging my own book, when this book helped me get started and is a first rate book, but I did my best to make sure my books was the most inclusive and the information tangible, gearing it to the stay-at-home mm, because it's developed to make the most money in the least amount of time (which are two things mom's are short of), but this quality ultimately makes it perfect for anyone wanting to make the money it takes to sustain yourself and your family with a home-based, low-risk, low-overhead, low-investment, high-profit business.

Christine Miller author of How to Sell Used Books on Amazon: The Stay-at-Home Mom's Secret Step-by-Step Guide (from setting up your account, to navigating the website, contacting customers, finding, recognizing, and selling top-dollar books, and much more)

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book for Amazon Book Sellers.......2007-05-17

This book gave me clear ideas on how to set up a book selling business. There were also many helpful tips on how to improve a business that is already going. I would buy it again.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best investments I've ever made!.......2007-08-15

I thought I knew a lot about designing an optimal website, using Google AdWords and online marketing. Then I picked up this book, and learned how much more I could be doing, and how many mistakes I had made. There are at least a half-dozen great ideas that can be implemented quickly and at little or not cost to improve your site's placement on search engines, and to attract more relevant AdWord clicks.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Is this complete.......2007-03-21

I have opted into online courses and even have an MBA where I studied E Business. This is by far the most complete, helpful and timely guide I have seen to succeed with an internet business. It is rare that I read a "How To" cover to cover, but this is an exception. It is certainly the first time I have had my highlighter out since Grad school. If you want to succeed in an ebusiness, this is the way to get started!!

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad Overall.......2007-03-13

While normally I go for books aimed at experts (i.e the ones that are 400+ pages and dry as a salt sandwich), this book had received enough positive reviews that I gave it a shot. I was not disappointed.

For someone with my background (experienced software guru and web designer, with a moderate amount of Google know-how), I was still able to gain some valuable insight. So you're not surprised, this book is as much Marketing 101, as it is about Google (particularly the first half of the book). But it's needed to give the book a solid grounding from which to make its Google-related recommendations.

The bottom line though, hasn't changed from prior years: if you do the right thing and make your site rich in useful content, relative to its general audience and subject, you're going to do well with Google. If it's only moderately relevant or lacking in information "density" (the amount IOW), all the tricks in the world won't make your page rank any better. First, make sure you're really delivering the goods (the information your customers want and need and not a bunch of link farms, fluff, etc), *then* make sure your meta-tags, document names, document structure, Ad Words, and all the rest, are Google-savvy. The latter without the former, is useless. To the author's credit, he emphasizes this in several chapters.

Overall, I felt like there was a little too much "Freshman Marketing" and some of it was rehashed unnecessarily IMO (though someone with minimal marketing background would probably find it useful). I think the first 70 pages could probably be distilled down to about 40 or 50, but who's counting? ;-)

Recommended for anyone getting start with a business web site or who wants to make their existing site better.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, well worth the read.......2006-10-28

This book is MORE than a book about Google. It should almost have a different title like "Growing Your Business Online: plus strategies for improving your placement on Google".

The book covers so much more than Google placement. It shares responsible, realistic insight into how to improve your web site with the goal of first improving the visitor/customer experience and second to improve your overall relevance with search engines. Dave's advice comes from a respectable, responsible approach to creating genuine results for your web site. He also provides ample warnings about using web site trickery that could leave your site's relevance & credibility in ruins.

A MUST READ for web developers and Internet marketing folk.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Comprehensive Guidebook.......2006-09-06

This book isn't just about advertising on Google. There's lot more. Of course, complete idiots won't benefit from it, but the book begins from the ground for people not familar with online marketing.

It first outlines the importance of visibility, then touches on how Google actually works. No secrets here. Newbies learn a lot, but not the old hands. Then, it goes into great detail on how the website should be set up, presented and maintained. Again, very useful newbie tips on blogs and content generation are given but I doubt the experienced user will learn a lot of new things here.

There is also some mention about making money from Adsense and affiliate programs, but personally, I haven't had very good experiences with these programs.

The book ends with the future of findability. I find nothing futuristic about the author's ideas. Still, a good book for those just starting out.

There's no mystery about why Internet-centric businesses figure prominently in the popular consciousness these days: they're a great way to make a lot of money. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Starting an Online Business acknowledges that you can make a killing by taking a Web company public and explains, in layperson's terms, a bit about the process. However, the real service in this book is in the way it brings the reader down to earth by puncturing visions of instant e-wealth and then diligently explaining how to make real (read "bankable," not necessarily "enormous quantities of") money. The income streams you can build are generally tiny by Wall Street standards, but they can be very significant on a personal or family scale. You'll get a realistic view of Web business here, and that's why this book is worth reading.

The book suffers a bit when it attempts to explain the mechanics of Web publishing (a huge subject that's covered far better elsewhere), and there's very little discussion of the specific procedures involved in setting up a site to take credit cards. (This is a significant omission.) Coverage of soft matters, however, is good. The reader gets a tour through the thought processes involved in developing a business plan, plus all the details online entrepreneurs have to take care of (including dull things like fulfillment and order processing). Having a good idea and an attractive Web site won't cut it. Rather, a successful business has to know its product, know its customers, and unfailingly provide top-flight customer service. This book shows how to do all three. --David Wall

Topics covered: Selling products and services on the Internet, as the startup process applies to everyday entrepreneurs. Sections deal with defining a business plan, getting money for startup and growth, designing a Web site that draws and retains customers, advertising, marketing, and fulfillment.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2001-01-25

This book tries to cover all aspects of e-commerce on the internet but stays at a "dummy" level in terms of educating the reader about the specifics. It lacked depth and was too general for me to get anything out of it. Plus it is cluttered with many outdated and annoying web references that detract readers from the chapter readings.

5 out of 5 stars A great reference tool.......2000-07-19

There are a lot of references to resources on the web relating to the topics covered in the book. Just what I needed! The book has straightforward and simple writing about the considerations of starting and running a web site for profit. Then if you want to do more research, there are plently of URLs to start your research on the web about the resources available. Perfect for a beginner. This book also is showing up on bookshelves under the title "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Starting an Online Business" under the same ISBN. Gordon Whyte is not given credit as an author on this version, he just does the forward for the book.

5 out of 5 stars Best Business Guide to Internet.......1997-02-21

Vince and other readers, I just ordered *eight more copies* of 'How to Grow Your Business,' to add to the one I already own. I plan on giving one to each member of my staff, because they keep asking me questions that are already answered so clearly in the book. And I will have a couple of copies to give away to friends, just in case. I have seen Vince speak at conferences, and he really knows his stuff. He's low-key, has top-notch integrity, and cares about people. I have not found a more useful book on the subject, nor a nicer, more knowledgeable consultant. He gets my highest recommendation. --Peter Johnson-- Chief Vision Holder, www.GreenJungle.com

Dear Mr. Emery: I am very sorry to have to register this complaint about your book. I was halfway through reading it when I suddenly realized the book was such a valuable asset that I could no longer keep it in my house. I now keep the book at my bank in a safe deposit box. Unfortunately, this means I can only access the book during banking hours. This is really frustrating because your book is the most fact-filled and comprehensive source of doing business on the Internet I have been able to find (and believe me I've been looking!). Please do not write any more books as I only have a very small safe deposit box (besides the people in the bank are starting to look at me suspiciously because of my frequent visits to the vault). 1 out of 5 stars A thinly disguised ad for Microsoft & Netcom.......1999-11-09

I wanted to learn to market a small business on the Internet, but found just a single useful suggestion; most of the rest of the book was wasted extolling the virtues of the [apparent] sponsors.

Don't waste your money.

1 out of 5 stars A book that was obsolete the day it was put out.......1999-09-04

Basically, this book won't help you if you're serious about putting a business on the Internet. This book was simply published to cash in on the online trend, not really providing any real or substantial information on anything pertaining to small businesses and the internet. I have known Tom and Lori Heatherington for years now, and this book is true to their personalities, so I am not surprised. But that's just me, my internet business is doing just fine, thank you.

5 out of 5 stars REALLY "Complete" and "Easy" for a change!.......1999-08-22

As a computer programmer, I've seen all kinds of books on the Internet, writing HTML, how to use Java, how to clean your motherboard, and every other topic one can imagine. Most have promised they were complete or easy of fast; but, most were none of those.

So, I was extremely pleased to find The Complete Small business Internet Guide was everything it promised, and much more. I bought one copy for myself, and another for a client. Working together with the two books, we were able to put his business on the Internet in less than 2 days, a record for doing anything these days.

Best bargain I've ever gotten in a book, and I'd buy any other book written by Tom Heatherington. He kept his promises.

1 out of 5 stars A lazy book with a misguiding tittle..........1999-08-03

I knew nothing about internet except using email & navigating a bit. Now I still know nothing (or so little more) but I was reminded how to use email or navigate a bit... In the process, I learnt how to copy & paste a section of text ! I also learnt that it is possible to write & sell a book by having a look at the help section of FrontPage (copy & paste ?), add some web addresses (you could find them online) and a few "primary school" marketing tips. After a few weeks of practice, I should be ready to write my own book...

4 out of 5 stars A quick read and great overview of Internet business.......1999-07-08

It would be unreasonable to expect that any one book could be the ultimate answer to every question one might have about the Internet. The authors address this in their introduction. Their up-font and logical direction is a breah of frsh air in this over-hyped field.

I learned what I needed to know to get started. This was perfect for a new user. I also appreciated that they offerd other resources on almost every subject where I could get in-depth instruction on a particular subject.

This is not "advanced" information, this is perfect for the vast majority of us who need a place to get started.
