    2 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for..........2007-08-05

    I read this book looking for ideas to help supplement by regular income by doing something from home. This was NOT the book for me. Most of the suggestions were totally useless for me and required a lot of skills/education that I don't have and would have to obtain before I started. For example, two of the suggestions are Accountant and Lawyer (!). This would better have been titled as "Careers That Allow You To Work At Home If You Want To." Also, as a side note, the projected earnings about Medical Transcriptionist was WAY overinflated...I am doing that currently, and my mother owns her own business and makes really good money, but not the $40-$60 an hour stated in the book. That's outrageous!

    5 out of 5 stars 200 Best Home Businesses My Review.......2007-02-06

    I loved this book, granted you could really think of many of these ideas yourself, but truly not everyone is savvy on the internet to research. Finding a home based business is a tough task, you may want to read and re-read many of the ideas that spark an interest with you! If you do not like dogs, don't be a pet sitter. Take notes at every opportunity.

    3 out of 5 stars Home Business Review.......2007-01-19

    I enjoyed looking at the various options, however some "home Business'" were really not logical. However even, this book does stimulate the mind, and gets you thinking about what talents you have that you could put to use as a home business.

    The author mentions many different alternatives for supplementing
    income. These alternatives include review of utility bills for
    large entities. The rendering of expert advice is another potential
    business. The author mentions concert promotion, consulting
    engineering, eBook Publishing, freelance writing, graphic design,
    rare book dealerships and seminar services. This acquisition would
    help anyone seeking to supplement their current income. It could
    be useful for retirees and others on a fixed income.

    4 out of 5 stars A very refreshing book.......2006-07-07

    I picked up this book not knowing what to expect and I was very surprised to find a new type of approach.
    The author has done a wonderful at holding my attention and I highly recommend it.
    I'd also like to recommend that you read Untapped Wealth Discovered. This too is a very smart and refreshing book and the authors have packed lots of vital info into their book.
    Both of these books are well priced, very affordable and great motivators for both the interested and serious reader.

    4 out of 5 stars Wish I found this book earlier.......2006-11-07

    I have been working from home for over two years now. This book would have been a great resourse in my early days as i was learning the ins and outs. If you are contemplating starting to work from home there is some sound advice here. I now do well with my home business, and find reading all I can about this lifestyle keeps me sharp and productive. Books like this are great when it comes to the mechanics, but if you are going to get involved with selling from home by yourself, personal development is key. There are so many great books and cd's in this arena that truly help, knowing how to discipline yourself to persist consistantly is so important to your success. Authors that have helped me here are Micheal Losier (Law of Attraction) Andy Andrews (all his works are great) Dr Wayne Dyer (The power of intention) Dr. Ellie Drake, Jeffrey Combs, Jim Rohn, Joseph Murpy (The Power of the Subconcious Mind). Keep reading and jump in it is a great way to live.

    4 out of 5 stars A very interesting title for a book.......2006-07-16

    When I first read this book I was greatly intregued. I bought it simply for the title because I was very curious.
    The author has succeeded in capturing and holding my interest and I strongly suggest that you buy it if you're serious about changing your financial position.
    If you're looking for another suggestion for getting started on the right track and by this I mean staying away from those crazy foolhardy schemes, then please read "Untapped Wealth Discovered" written by Jeff Marquis and Kerry Harrison.
    This book is a very fresh new approach to helping you discover home businesses and opportunities that are safe and scam free. You gotta be careful about choosing the right option for yourself.

    5 out of 5 stars Sober Advice for Would-Be Entrepreneurs.......2006-03-16

    If you are thinking about starting a home-based business, spend some time pondering this book.

    Peter Hupalo has done all would-be entrepreneurs a favor by presenting a sober picture of the joys and tribulations of going-it-on-your-own. While I am not so sure about the underwear part, Hupalo offers a clear, well-written guide to starting your home-based business.

    I have been home-based for more than 20 years. In my experience, you will need something covering your underwear if you plan to succeed. In my home state, Connecticut, the vast majority of business formations have failed within two years of their filing. To me success is a matter of prospecting, networking, execution and performance. That translates into face-to-face meeting. You will need some cloths.

    Once you get beyond that idea, the book is great. The author covers critical topics such as:
    * Business Models
    * Personal Success Characteristics
    * Naming your business
    * Zoning
    * Insurance
    * Intellectual Property
    * Limiting your Liability
    * Business Expenses
    * Taxation
    * Financial Management

    In my opinion, the best chapter provides state-by-state resources for starting your business. It provides a detailed guide to local and state business regulations, licensing, state taxation, and name registration. This chapter alone justifies the book's price and any time you spend reading it.

    If you have the proper make-up, working for yourself is great. But, as Hupalo correctly points out, there is an opportunity cost. If you understand it and accept the risks associated with that cost, you are well on your way to starting your business. This book will help you clarify those issues.

    5 out of 5 stars A no-nonsense guide to the nuts and bolts of starting a home based business.......2005-12-09

    Written by the operator of the ThinkingLike.com website for entrepreneurs, Getting Rich in Your Underwear: How To Start and Run a Profitable Home-Based Business is a no-nonsense guide to the nuts and bolts of starting a home based business. Chapters cover basic home business models, the characteristics that pave one's way for personal success, zoning and insurance issues, why intellectual property is critically important, matters of copyright/trademark/patent, expenses and taxes to be aware of, fifteen basic steps to getting started, state resources for help in getting off the ground, and much more. Written in a no-nonsense, down-to-earth style, Getting Rich in Your Underwear also warns prospective entrepreneurs of all-too-common scams - such as the Internet scam of someone claiming trademark ownership of a word or expression and asking an entrepreneur to pay a royalty to use or license the expression (this isn't how trademarks work and is referred to as 'naked licensing', which can be grounds for the cancellation of a trademark!) Though highly readable, Getting Rich In Your Underwear does not shy away from details or mathematics, and offers sample calculations and forms to get the reader acquainted with necessary accounting matters. An absolute "must-have" for anyone seriously interested in running a business from home.

    5 out of 5 stars Knows What he is Talking About.......2005-07-25

    I've worked at my own home based business and disagree with the title. If you wear your underwear at work, that's the time when UPS is going to make a delivery. Of course I don't look nearly as good as the girl on the front cover. I've also got to say that I've never gotten rich, but I don't have a boss.

    Basically this guy knows what he is talking about, so I'm only going to comment on those areas where I think I have something to add.

    Chapter 3 is on naming your business. He gives some good advice, but I think he has the chapter backwards. For me, the most important thing is to have a good web domain name. Joe's Plumbing doesn't need a domain name, but most companies now do. He lists three companies to check on domain names. Network Solutions was the original Government set up monopoly. At that time everyone had to use them. [...] for exactly the same thing, and their customer service is great. (I have no connection with GoDaddy except being a customer of theirs.)

    Chapter 4 is on locating the business with regard to zoning. There are a lot of restrictions on operating a home business and he mentions most of them. They come down to don't cause a mess -- a lot of customers parked at your neighbors, a big flashing neon sign, big delivery trucks coming by. These things annoy neighbors. The kinds of things he talks about in Chapter 9 don't need these things, and zoning won't be a problems unless a neighbor complains.

    Most people say to form a corporation, Mr. Hupalo doesn't. I strongly agree with him, forming a corporation is expensive and probably not worth while. There is some protection under the law if you do business as a corporation, but lawyers are very experienced in getting around this shield. If you do want a corporation, you lawyer will do it for you for a few hundred dollars. For this few hundred dollars he will have his secretary type up the standardized papers he used for the last hundred corporations he did. Or you can get these same papers out of several books and file them yourself for only the filing fee.

    One last comment, chances are your business will fail, most do. But with the failure you'll learn something. Work for a while to get back on your feet and your second business will work better. If this doesn't work, repeat the process -- it's worth it.

    Basically this fellow knows what he is writing about.

    Mr. Stephenson covers pretty much everything related to starting your home-based business. I don't know that there is another book on the market with even a fraction of the useful worksheets and resources he includes. I highly recommend this book for anyone contemplating a step-by-step guide to starting a business.

    3 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2006-11-03

    This book covers just about everything from organizing your desk to creating and implementing your business. The only downfall I saw that it did not cover bookkeeping of your business. It talked about finding capital and payment options but no accounting.

    5 out of 5 stars Working from home made easy.......2005-10-05

    Even though I've operated my business from home for over 3 years, I found this book very helpful and it provided lots of valuable money saving tips, as well as lots of ideas for how I can expand my business using easy promotional ideas. I especially liked the information provided on home/business security, and plan to implement many of these into my own home and business. It doesn't matter if you're new to business, or already running a home based business-this book will help you run a better and more profitable business.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent Value.......2004-11-24

      5 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Up! Marketing, Templates & Job Leads!.......2007-03-05

      I purchased this book at a recent Women's Expo. I can't wait to get started with some of the unique marketing techniques Ms. Shirah suggested (some I never would have considered). I also found the 40 or so templates, job leads with website addresses, info on project bidding and sample letters extremely helpful. I think she did an excellent job in the writing of this book. It's not a boring technical manual, but a quick & easy read with practical info and examples that can easily be applied. I give this TWO THUMBS UP!

      5 out of 5 stars Wealth of Accurate Info.......2007-03-05

      I can attest that many hours of research as well as 18+ years of practical experience went into the development/writing of this book. It was professionally edited by an LSU English instructor, so the errors referenced by Nepal are few, if any. After three years, I still find the wealth of information contained within the pages of this 1st Edition applicable. The 3rd Edition will be available shortly on Amazon.

      3 out of 5 stars Full of information...and typos!.......2005-06-10

      As a court reporting student I occasionally take on a transcription job for a little extra income. I bought Ms. Shirah's book hoping to learn a little more about the business of home-based transcription. The book turned out to be incredibly thorough and super informative, a valuable resource. In that respect, I almost feel bad about giving it three stars instead of five. So why did I?
      Unfortunately, the book is riddled with typos and fairly obvious grammatical mistakes. As a court reporter, scopist, transcriptionist, or proofreader, our long-term success is completely derived from our work product. Professional-looking business cards, invoices, and information packets are wonderful tools. However, our most important business card -- the one that will determine if we remain successful -- is simply a good, clean transcript (or other piece of written work).
      When I'm reading (especially something that I've spent money on), I lose a little confidence in the writer with each typographical error, misspelled word, or basic grammatical mistake that I encounter. By the end of this book I was definitely disappointed.
      I am returning this book for the aforementioned reasons, but I have to say, the little boxes containing Bible scripture at the bottom of many of this book's pages were unprofessional, irrelevant, and just plain irritating.

      5 out of 5 stars What a great book to get started with.......2003-01-24

      I knew I wanted to start a home daycare when I got pregnant with my first child so I could stay home and enjoy her rather than going out to work. I came across Start and Run a Home Daycare on another Web site and knew I had to order it. Am I glad I did. This book took me through the process in a way that made a lot of sense. What I liked the most were the forms I could use to operate my daycare and the information on child development and child safety. Being a new parent I found this information most helpful. The book's inside design is also charming and the recipies and activities with each chapter are a nice touch. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to start a daycare. It's my business bible.

      4 out of 5 stars Making a Profit?.......2002-03-05

      When it comes to making a profit.. the bottom line is budget.
      Can you honesty say that children are not worth every penny?
      NO.
      This book has a reality to the cost effectiveness of running a
      seldom lucrative business. Ideally this woud be the case if you
      planned a business to take advantage of the core market. In this book the author is trying to guide would-be daycare providers in a more acceptable way to manage a daycare. It definitely takes time and money to nuture a child... but it also takes love, patience, understanding, determination, committment to guide children in everyday development. It is true that one should not take on the responsiblity of handling several children at one time unless their capable and willing to make everyday sacrifices.

      5 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful!.......2002-03-05

      I have referred so often to this book the edges are tattered and worn. Besides being a great reference tool for working out my policy statement and my rates, the book took me through every step I needed to get my daycare home organized. Even helped me list all the supplies and furniture I'd need, not to mention all the safety issues and recipies it has. I simply won't part with my copy.

      1 out of 5 stars waste of money.......2001-12-25

      This book is a waste of time and money I think the other review must had been written by the author because it had you thinking it woould be reliable but it is just not realistic

      5 out of 5 stars Enormously helpful guide in getting me started in day care!.......1999-10-01

      I owe the library a fortune because I can't let go of this book! My day care is only a few weeks old and I'm still referring to C. Pruissen's book. I found the policies section got me writing my own Policies and Procedures Statement with confidence. She is detailed in her samples and advice so that every area of need is addressed thoroughly. Best book on the subject-and I've read many. Hope it's reprinted soon!

      3 out of 5 stars good, but brief.......2006-11-22

      I checked this book out because I'm interested in the possibility of selling knit goods. I found it to be good as an introduction to craft business. It covers everything from selecting and producing crafts to places to sell and managing small business. However, it covered each topic very briefly, not getting into much detail. For an overview of craft business, it was good at getting me thinking about possibilities. If, however, I pursue the idea more seriously, I'll have to read more books, as this one would be rather insufficient alone.

      4 out of 5 stars Great Book for Craft People Looking to Sell Their Products.......2001-06-23

      This book covers the A-Z of starting and running a craft business. It does not cover how to make crafts but it does give a long list of the types of crafts people can market. This book has helpful suggestions for beginners who want to start a craft business, as-well-as, seasoned professionals who want to expand or improve their craft business. The information in the chapters on production, getting loans, and market research are extremely helpful. Also included are helpful tips on how to pick the best craft shows. The author, William Hynes, shows his extensive knowledge of the craft business and shares his knowledge in an easy to read, straight-forward manner.

      3 out of 5 stars barbara brabec's book is better.......2000-02-28

      i bought this book and barbara brabec's book. They both have the same kind of information, but spend the extra $ for her book as she dedicates a few hundred more pages to these subjects.

      1 out of 5 stars extremely disappointing.......2001-08-31

      Waste of money to buy. Most of businesses are for professionals whom I doubt would need to buy this "self-help" type book. More information is readily available on the web than this book even chips away at. Go to the library or use the internet.

      3 out of 5 stars Designed more around professionals wanting to work at home........1999-07-21

      Slightly dissappointing. I thought it would give more of an insight to "simpler" jobs at home rather than professionals wanting to work at home - which is what a large majority of what the book covered. The book also covered ideas that would work better in larger cities and areas. For the items that were listed, the descriptions on some were vague, others went into great detail.
