5 out of 5 stars If you haven't read this book yet, I suggest that you do ASAP.......2007-10-24

The day when you truly understand 80% of the contents of this book is the moment of milestone of your trading career. As you progress in your trading career, check back with this book to determine how much you have learn. This book is the pivotal standard of all technical traders.

5 out of 5 stars Reference.......2007-08-13

If you use the charts to look for trades, you have to buy this book. It's an awesome reference for charting.

4 out of 5 stars Good Even for a Random Walker.......2007-07-22

This book is a very well written introduction to the Technical Analysis of the financial markets. It covers a lot of ground and for a text book style layout, it is surprisingly easy to read. Murphy starts with a solid introduction including the philosophy of technical analysis and a defense against the criticisms from academics and followers of the Random Walk Theory. The meat of the book is a comprehensive treatment of the core components of technical analysis including Trendlines, Reversal and Continuation Patterns, Moving Averages, and Oscillators. The author continues to dig deeper with Point & Figure Charts, Japanese Candlesticks, and Eliott Wave Theory.

As a big fan of Malkiel's "Random Walk Down Wall Street," I started reading this book with some healthy skepticism. While I was not converted to the chartist's philosophy, I felt like I did pick up some tools that could still be useful in a buy-and-hold strategy.

5 out of 5 stars Everything a beginner needs to know.......2007-07-07

John Murphy's book explains nearly everything anyone who is looking to understand the technical side of the market could ask for.

PROS: Easy to follow. Starts from the ground up into the complicated stuff. Feels like a year's worth of college courses finished in a few weeks time. This is far and away the best overall stock book I've read to date. I'm making money now!

CONS: Spends a bit too much time on futures trading (for which the book was originally written) Doesn't get far enough into how much time should lapse as a pattern unfolds. Doesn't get much into the psychology of the trader's mind. Somewhat outdated on computer advances (not a big deal)

4 out of 5 stars Classic Technical Analysis Book.......2007-06-28

I received 4 copies of this book during my course work at the NYIF, its an excellent referance manual for anyone applying Technical Analysis to the financial markets.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent sequel to Elder's previous book.......2007-10-24

This book really digs deeper into the real truth of trading world than Elder's previous book. For anyone who read Trading for living by Elder and not turned off by the 'Dog Eat Dog World of Trading' depicted in his book and still around, this book is certainly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Clear, Concise Trading Advice.......2007-10-10

I have traded stocks since I was a teen. I have been familiar with Dr. Elder for years. Along the way, I have read many books on trading. This ranks among the best.

Dr. Elder breaks the art and science of trading into three pillars. He calls them his three M's:

Mind
Market
Management

The key to winning the trading game is to win the battle within your mind. Dr, Elder, himself a practicing psychiatrist, explains how to develop discipline and to avoid the traps caused by emotional trading.

Second, he shows how to identify good trades using charts and computerized indicators. In remarkably clear and concise language, he explains the indicators and how to combine them to develop your own trading system.

Finally, he discusses importance of money management. The successful trader manages risk. Dr. Elder lays down the rules to harness it.

After reading this book, there is no doubt in my mind why this book has achieved a "Classic" status. It is well deserved. Dr. Elder has distilled more than 25 years of trading experience into a readable and insightful tome. Every trader who is serious about his or her markets should read it. Its gems of knowledge will cause it to become dog-eared in no time.

5 out of 5 stars A path to follow.......2007-08-17

This is the best trading book I ever read. The technique showed by Mr. Elder to act automatic while the market are open and run fast instead of thinking is one of the best advice I ever heard. To be a sucessful trader you really need a defensive money management approach and a system to follow, it is much more important than simply identifying trends and bet right.

I rated this book 5 stars because I can't rate 6 or more. And yes I did some money with it. In fact this book already paid for itself...

I also reccomend Entries & Exits : Visits to 16 Trading Rooms (Wiley Trading) and The Complete Trading for a Living: The Legendary Approach to Trading with the Companion Study Guide from the same author.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly good and helpful !.......2007-06-16

The book is realy very good.
He talked in detail about almost everything.
Talked about psychology better than a whole book in one chapter " I have read a whole book about this topic and never get more information than what he said"
explained beautifuly and nicely, HOW the trade must be executed: from A to Z. I have not find yet a better method than his.
Was great showing us how money could and must be managed.
Disclsing his own trading diary is the top of what he made in the book. It is realy like inviting someone to your bedroom!! But for no pupose but to our favorit, he made it. Don't hesitate buy it now!

4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-05-30

I bought this book for my wife since she likes stock trading. She told me this is a great book which worthes 5 starts. Although I know nothing about trading, I did spent some days on this book just for curiosity. However, I felt lost most of the time since the book talks some terms with less detail (e.g., k tail). I assume that only people who knows TA will benefit from this book, not the ones who know nothing about trading or TA yet. I guess the people may benefit more if buy the author's another book "Trade for a living". So I will give a 4 stars.

4 out of 5 stars The second edition needs some work........2007-07-09

I have had other texts that did a great job at highlighting the key concepts, perhaps creating a sidebar to point out definitions and concepts as they occur in the text. This book assumes that your highlighter will find these nuggets by itself. Also, the chapter summaries were pretty skimpy, and I did not find them to be a valuable study resource.

However, the end-of-chapter questions and problems were fantastic resources to expand my learning and discover weaknesses. I was also impressed by the choice of case studies. These real-world examples contributed to a deeper understanding, and provided a starting point for research.

The range of topics included:
-The International Monetary System.
-Balance of Payments.
-Foreign exchange markets and rates.
-Management of risk due to foreign exchange exposure.
-Sources of global equity and debt.
-International Portfolio Diversification Theory.
-International Tax Management Strategies.

I did learn alot about Multinational Finance from this book, but I think my learning would have been enhanced if the book were developed further.

Book Description

In order to survive and thrive in today's financial markets, you must seriously consider the use of options in your investment endeavors. Options allow you to reap the same benefits as an outright stock or commodity trade, but with less risk and less money on the line. The truth is, you can achieve everything with options that you would with stocks or commoditiesat less costwhile gaining a much higher percentage return on your invested dollars.

After numerous years as a market maker in the trenches of the New York Mercantile Exchange, few analysts know how to make money trading options like author Lee Lowell. In this well-rounded resource, Lowell shows both stock and commodity option traders exactly what works and what doesn't.

Filled with in-depth insight and expert advice, Get Rich with Options provides you with the knowledge and strategies needed to achieve optimal results within the options market. The book quickly covers the basicshow options are priced, strike price selection, the use of Delta, and using volatility to one's advantagebefore moving on to the four options trading strategies that have helped Lowell profit in this arena time and again: buying deep-in-the-money call options, selling naked puts, selling option credit spreads, and selling covered calls. Using these strategoes decisively, he says, is the fastest route to riches in the options trading game.

Get Rich with Options is packed with real-life examples of actual trades and detailed discussions of how options can be used as a hedging, speculating, or income-producing tool. You'll learn how to set up a home business with the best options trading software, tools, and Web sites. And you'll begin to see options in a whole new light and discover how to become part of a small group of investors who consistently win.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A little hype-y, but a very good introduction on how to use options..........2007-08-29

The majority of books I've read on investing in the stock market are focused on buying and selling of actual shares of stock. I vaguely know of options, using puts and calls to leverage blocks of stock for small amounts of capital. But Get Rich With Options: Four Winning Strategies Straight from the Exchange Floor by Lee Lowell does a good job in explaining how that all works, and how best to structure your option trading to incur minimal risk and maximum gain. It just takes a little bit to get past the "over the top" title...

Contents:
Part 1 - The Option Basics: It's All About the Calls and Puts; How Options Are Priced; Option Volatility; Stocks versus Options; Why Option Selling Is Your Key to Success
Part 2 - The Strategies: Buy All the Stock You Want for Half the Price; Getting Paid to Buy Your Favorite Stock; Option Credit Spreads - The All-Star Strategy; A Day in the Life of the Market Maker; Put Your Stocks to Work - Sell Covered Calls; A Bonus Strategy - Ratio Option Spreads
Part 3 - Getting Ready to Trade: Tools of the Trade; Brokers and Commissions
Conclusion; Index

Lowell has experienced the option trading life as both a member of a brokerage firm and as an independent trader. His experience comes into play in the book, as there are detailed analyses of some of his trades that illustrate the different strategies. Part 1 was perfect for someone like me who has heard of options, and perhaps knows the bare basics, but doesn't understand why and how they are priced. Now all those things like volatility and deltas make sense. Part 2 is where he gets into the strategies he uses to buy and sell options. A couple of them are pretty easy to understand once you have the basics down (like the covered calls). In fact, it's hard to imagine why more people don't do that. A few seemed more complex and confusing, such as the ratio option spreads. Perhaps with a few more readings, it might have sunk in. But I'm not sure I was prepared by the end of the book to execute those strategies...

The main knock I have against this book is that everything's successful and works in his examples. He's pretty clear as to where the risk lies in each of the strategies. And it's easy to see how options *do* mitigate your potential loss risk while giving you a much better chance of walking away with some profit. But unless you're trading thousands of option contracts with plenty in your brokerage account to cover your exposure, the average trader is going to be walking away with a few hundred or so in profit from these techniques. Not quite "rich", but far better than watching your stock plummet or stagnate over the years. And I *really* would have liked to see him show some of the trades that *didn't* go well. He alludes to nothing being perfect or a sure bet, but you certainly won't see him dwell on the imperfections here...

Overall, this is a good book that covers a complex topic in an understandable fashion. I would have preferred a bit less hype and salesmanship, but it's not so bad as to detract from some good information and advice.

5 out of 5 stars easy to understand.......2007-08-23

I recommend this book for anyone interested in learning about options. It is easy to read and understand and will give you a good foundation.

5 out of 5 stars great for more conservative investors interested in options.......2007-08-12

I thought this book did an excellent job of explaining some more conservative option strategies - such as buying a deep in the money call instead of buying the stock outright. Covered calls and put-sells are also covered plus 2 other strategies I doubt I would ever use. This book does not go into exotic and very risky option techniques. By the way, the title just does not fit the book.

5 out of 5 stars I loved this book!.......2007-07-27

I recently started trading options successfully. The book is right on the money! As it clearly states, you must be right on the time and direction of the market, guessing won't cut it, unless you opt for the delta neutral strategies. I've read many options books and this one is the one I like the most, I highly recomend it.

4 out of 5 stars Worth reading but lacks specifics.......2007-07-12

Mr. Lowell presents useful discussions of option basics as well as his favorite option trading strategies. He gives many examples of profitable credit spread trades, although all involve options on futures rather than securities. There is no explanation as to why options on securities are not included. I was also left wanting for some specifics on how he selects spreads with the highest expectation for returns, and how the he determines when to exit the spread trades prior to expiration. The information on available internet data sources is very good.

In The Little Book, Joel Greenblatt, Founder and Managing Partner at Gotham Capital (with average annualized returns of 40 0.000000or over 20 years), does more than simply set out the basic principles for successful stock market investing. He provides a "magic formula" that is easy to use and makes buying good companies at bargain prices automatic. Though the formula has been extensively tested and is a breakthrough in the academic and professional world, Greenblatt explains it using 6th grade math, plain language and humor. You'll learn how to use this low risk method to beat the market and professional managers by a wide margin. You'll also learn how to view the stock market, why success eludes almost all individual and professional investors, and why the formula will continue to work even after everyone "knows" it.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, simple and easy to follow.......2007-10-22

Great book for people that don't want to spent too much time making money. Accompanying website pretty well does all the work for you. A great book from a great performer in the investment world.

5 out of 5 stars Basic, but very good.......2007-10-19

Many have criticized this book as being simplistic. And it is. That's because it's really a very simple concept that has been around for a while. That is, that buying a basket of undervalued stocks will provide better returns than the market average. The system presented here is just a refinement of the low P/E approach that has been tested in many studies and that has been proven to work.

I believe the reason it is presented in such a simplistic manner is that it's meant to be accessible to novice investors and people who simply want to earn higher returns than an index fund without having to invest a lot of time and effort into it. Though that's not to say that more experienced investors won't benefit from reading it also.

Another criticism is that the author stresses that you must have faith in the method to be successful. Some have misrepresented this to suggest that you are asked to blindly believe in the method. This is far from the truth. There is plenty of data presented and nothing about this method conflicts with common sense or with other studies. What the author is saying is that you need to fully accept and understand the rationale of the method and not be shaken by periods of under-performance.

5 out of 5 stars Great Starting Point.......2007-10-17

This is the perfect book to start as a Value Investor.

Greenblatt will show you the way to find out of favor stocks that are poised to make a comeback and putting statistics on the table as good books do. No accounting background needed and no need to suffer boring technical stuff and even better is that after finishing the book you won't have to walk alone because Greenblatt offers his website for free to find investment candidates.

After you finish with this book I would suggest you to try the Little Book on Value Investing by Christopher Browne.

5 out of 5 stars A Solid Buy.......2007-10-16

If you're looking to invest in individual stocks and incorporate a method on how to make your picks, don't miss this truly fantastic book that will hold your hand along the way.

5 out of 5 stars Good Investment Advice.......2007-08-23

He wrote this so anyone can beat the market average--especially beat most of the mutual fund adverages with little risk and little tracking. It is O.K. to buy Blue chip stocks at a lesser cost and hold them as the price goes up. This is not for active traders, but general investors who think they can invest at least as well as many mutual fund managers. You can!

4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-08-23

Everything you need to prepare for the Exchange 2007 test. In depth information and a great reference book for "in the field" work.

4 out of 5 stars A Great resource.......2007-05-14

Assisted in my upgrade from Exchange 2003 tremendously. A Great resource amd very complete. Only one glitch (installing Exchange Management console in step 3 of upgrade should be installing Microsoft powershell.)

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful!.......2007-04-07

We spent the past 4 weeks planning our migration from Exchange 2000 and 2003 to Exchange 2007 using this book, and complted the migration last weekend with complete success! (14 backend servers, 1.8 terabytes of mail). The planning and sizing information was very helpful, the step by step guidance walked us through the process, and we're now down to 4 clustered servers with Hub Transport policies managing our incoming and outgoing mail. We also found the tips and best practices to be very helpful, unlike the Microsoft installation whitepapers that walk you through the procedures, this book actually explained what not to do as often as it said what to do which is EXTREMELY helpful when you are trying to decide which option to select compared to another.

I highly recommend this book to anyone planning to migrate their organization to Exchange 2007, the information in this book definitely helped us have a successful migration!

3 out of 5 stars Not bad but not very good either.......2007-03-16

I ordered this book due to the fact that it was the first released book for Exchange 2007 on Amazon but apparently there was a reason. Live a earlier reviewer said there are a lot of errors in this book and it makes you wary if you can trust the things that are being said as fact when some of it doesn't sound exactly right.

Mainly this book is huge! going well over 1000 pages but so much of the book is just the same thing repeated over and over again. Also I don't understand the need to go into some many other topics in this book. This book covers so many other Microsoft products like AD, DNS, security WSUS, MOM, even how to install Windows server 2003! With so many thing going on in this book it's hard to find the real meat on what you bought the book for... Exchange 2007.

I would say this book is a good reference guide and will be able to help you with your migrations but look for something else to pass exam 70-236 or to get a better grasp into the inner workings of Exchange 2007.

3 out of 5 stars Good & Bad.......2007-02-24

I agree with Mitchell there are some errors in the text..but there are a lot of features i had no idea were available in Exchange like Safelist Aggregation until i read this book. Overall it's still a good investment when learning the new Exchange Server.

Book Description

PowerShell replaces cobbled-together assemblies of third-party management tools with an elegant programming language and a powerful scripting shell for the Windows environment. In the tradition of Manning's ground breaking "In Action" series, this book comes from right from the source. Written by Bruce Payette, one of principal creators of PowerShell, Windows PowerShell in Action shows you how to build scripts and utilities to automate system tasks or create powerful system management tools to handle the day-to-day tasks that drive a Windows administrator's life. Because it's based on the .NET platform, PowerShell is also a powerful tool for developers and power users.

Windows PowerShell in Action was written by Bruce Payette, one of the founding members of the Windows PowerShell team, co-designer of the PowerShell language and the principal author of the PowerShell language implementation. The book enables you to get the most out of the PowerShell environment. Using many examples, both small and large, this book illustrates the features of the language and environment and shows how to compose those features into solutions, quickly and effectively.

This book is designed for anyone who wants to learn PowerShell and use it well. Rather than simply being a book of recipes to read and apply, this book gives you the deep knowledge about how PowerShell works and how to apply it.

4 out of 5 stars Geeked Out on Powershell.......2007-08-06

As a both a Windows and Linux system administrator, this book overall made me frustrated initially, as I really don't want to delve into the introspective nature of compiler design miracles, but rather have a practical book on applying PowerShell. Nevertheless, once I sat down and reviewed key chapters, I was able to learn how to better utilize Powershell and apply it to some chores relating to the nature of system administration.

One of the things I high agree with another reviewer is that the book does indeed delve too much into the "gears and cogs" of Powershell, and many times too much. Sometimes we delve into how behind the scenes, the language takes measures to behave like any other language or shell, and we're scratching our heads, why did I have to understand what I always knew to work and behave. Good example is page 62 on string expansion, where once something is assigned is doesn't changed when accessed. Like that's how everything is suppose to work. Though, then he mentions how to override the behavior, but never drops any code examples for that side note.

Though this book seems more oriented to software developers, rather than system administrators, I would still recommend this book, as you can become really well versed in the Powershell and understand its advantages as it relates to the .NET platform on the recent Windows OSes.

5 out of 5 stars Clearly a Winner.......2007-08-06

Not only does this teach you powershell, it answers all kinds of questions about why Powershell is the way it is, and why certain decisions were made. Ever want to know why we use -eq instead of == ? The answer is in here. This books simply rocks. This book not only shows you how to use Powershell, it teaches you Powershell works, from the inside out. Completely worthwhile. I would highly suggest reading it multiple times, as you learn more and more each time through.

5 out of 5 stars PAGE 205 ... PAGE 205.......2007-07-28

This book gives you the goods and helps you become very productive very fast. As a service ... I'm pointing out that PowerShell is installed in a somewhat crippled state which allows for interactive scripting only. You know, security, security, security.

Most of us, of course want to put the script into a file and execute it and this won't work until you set an 'execution policy'. This information can be found starting on page 205 and further directions on page 451.

Just thought you'd like to know.

Besides that a very good book that stands on it's own. If you've been around the programming track a couple of times you won't need the 'for the absolute beginner' book ... this one will do the trick!

I wish all technical books were written this well.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Make This Your First Purchase.......2007-07-09

Consider this book the Definitive Reference for PowerShell. Written by one of the designers of the PowerShell environment, the author knows all the ins and outs, back-alleys, hidden rooms, and secret handshakes the language offers - and isn't afraid to grab you by the hand and drag you along (like it or not!) for the tour of your life.

Therein, however, is the reason I can't recommend this as your first PowerShell book. The book is very logically planned out, the information very well presented in relatively easy to understand language, there is an abundance of script snippets to demonstrate what is being talked about, and the writing style itself is entertaining to read. But the author knows too much on the subject, and like any proud parent, often "too much information" is given, delving too deep into the gears and cogs of PowerShell and the underlying .NET framework for the (often basic) building block component, which might overwhelm the new PowerShell user, especially if the user does not have programming, let alone scripting, experience.

So although I say don't make this your first purchase, make it your second - and probably your last. Start with an "Introduction" style book (like Microsoft Windows Powershell Programming for the Absolute Beginner) to get used to the complex environment (even if you've only had VBS/JS experience), get comfortable with the basics of the shell, then move up to this title. You'll soon find out that every aspect you thought you knew has much more to the story than you thought, and you'll walk away from this read able to do just about everything you want.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you ever wanted to know about PowerShell.......2007-05-12

I don't ever remember reading a computer book from cover to cover, but I got hooked on this book and "can't put it down"... Plus, who ever thought that the history of a program could be as interesting as this one is. After all, the book begins by asking "why another shell language?" By the time you are into a few chapters you realize the question should have been "what took you so long?"

The book is peppered with valuable code examples that show off everything from the basics to the most advanced concepts, and the examples are built incrementally so you can see how and why every character in a command line works. Since PowerShell is object oriented, you easily learn why this is important, and how to extract the power of an OO shell.

I've already put PowerShell to work at the office using it for WMI, Active Directory, and file management tasks and have incorporated it into my AutoIT scripts as well. This book was a great help in getting me up to speed as fast as I have.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent material in 4th edition.......2007-05-12

Similar to many traders who own Perry Kaufman's 3rd edition of New Trading Systems and Methods, I ignored the publication of the 4th edition. Well, such oversight was my loss. Even a quick perusal of the work reveals a wealth of new ideas, techniques, and concepts. Kaufman offers ample inspiration for exploring trading problems in a new light.

Kaufman's encyclopedic coverage is unique. The 3rd edition contains 700 plus dense, fast paced material. The current edition adds another 500 pages of new and revised material. Each topic is examined with care; Kaufman has an ability to focus on the key concepts and omit the fluff. His presentation assumes a sophisticated, intelligent reader with solid software development, testing, and trading skills. Sloppy readers, clumsy testers, undisciplined `traders' will complain that this is not a `trading war stories book'--such complaints are correct; this is a trading SYSTEMS and METHODS handbook.

The book binding has a problem. At 1,200 pages, the adhesive binding is falling apart. This book requires either sewn through or over-sewn type binding. Shame on John Wiley for such embarrassing production quality!

3 out of 5 stars Might interest a mathematician.......2007-04-28

I've only gotten about a third to halfway thru the book as I can't see what the author's purpose is, whether laboring thru the rest would benefit me or not. It reads like a college level textbook of the mathematics behind technical analysis. Boring. In what I read, the author worked thru proof formulas to get to more elaborate indicators. In so doing, sometimes he explained what his formula's symbols meant and sometimes not. I sure don't want to go back thru the book to see if I can find an earlier description of what the symbols mean should I ever want to use one of the new formulas. Then he compared some of the new trend followers like standard deviation against olders ones like moving average and point and figure and behold none are really better than the others. When I get stranded on a tropical isle and am bored to tears, I will page thru the rest of it.

5 out of 5 stars The only book I can depend on for clear system trading information........2007-01-27

After buying a large number of highly recommended trading books (including the books referred to in these reviews), this is the only book that I can depend on to clearly explain in technical detail almost any aspect of system trading that I need information on. This book is well written, comprehensive, and approaches subjects in an objective manner. It doesn't tell you how to trade, but clearly describes the different system trading strategies and indicators, their advantages and disadvantages, and practical considerations. This is a must for those developing rule based and automated trading systems.

5 out of 5 stars What more could you ask for in a book???.......2006-10-02

Trading is serious business, although you wouldn't think so, considering the way many people approach it.

The fundamental truth about all types of markets is that the minority gets the money, and keeps it. Of course, there will be times where the market trends strongly in one direction (usually up), and the masses confuse a bull market for brains. But those who are serious about earning profits, and keeping them, need to develop a method or philosophy to separate their thoughts and actions to act independently from the crowd.

If there were college level courses in financial speculation, Kauffman's book would be the required text. All sorts of twists on trend following, counter trend strategies, technical indicators, statistical methods, as well as various charting techniques, are all described. I should also add, the book comes with a CD that enables you to test various methods described in the book using Excel spreadsheets. The spreadsheets are already set up, you just need to input the data.

Some reviewers say that all of the methods are "bad." I'd disagree. This book is a valuable reference, and when you understand the logic of what has come before, you can adapt it to current market conditions. There are a surprisingly large, but finite, number of ways to slice and dice market data. But there are an infinite number of ways to combine a few them into a robust trading system.

5 out of 5 stars Solid technical analysis book.......2006-08-02

This book is worth the money. The author presents solid explanations on the use of technical indicators and statistical calculations of the market. He guides you step by step in order to understand the specific applications and use of technical analysis and use of mathematical calculations applied to the financial markets. The depth of research and examples is very broad and extensive, plus the examples of the actual programming code in order to create your own trading systems is very helpful. Recommended by MTA to complete the CMT course.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Old classic version is much better!.......2007-09-03

Most of the information presented in this book comes from the old classic version from the original authors John Magee and Robert D Edwards. You get more "bang for your buck" if you buy the used older version 4 or version 5 (Revised) and still have some money left in your pocket.
I remember paying just $12.50 for Version 4 in the early 60's. I don't think the supplements(upgrade) to the text to bring in modern stocks is worth the extra money. Charts are always open to interpretation but a stocks value lies in the eye of the beholder. The price patterns are like road signs you should be able to visualize them on any chart regardless what time-frame. Not knowing stock patterns when they are completed is like driving through stop signs. After you have read this book you should be skillful in drawing trend lines, channel lines, and identifying trends. Even today you see the same old basic chart patterns occur as the old fashioned charts a century ago. No oscillators or momentum-based indicators are needed. Experience is your best teacher when you look at chart patterns and there are many more to identify that you don't see in this book. In the market you must look at what is happening now then predict what is going to happen, not what has already happened to make money. The market always looks through the front windshield not through the rear view mirror.

An interesting Chart pattern book I would recommend you to read after you have read this book and check his website for more books /chart patterns. "Getting Started in Chart Patterns" by Thomas N. Bulkowski.

Who was John Magee? Can read about him in this book entitled. "100 Minds That Made the Market" by Kenneth L. Fisher.

5 out of 5 stars Not just updated, completely new and must have..........2007-04-29

If Edwards and Magee wrote the bible of technical analysis in 1948 when they first published "Technical Analysis of Stock Trends." then why do we need a Ninth Edition of their classic? This question was foremost in my mind as I began reading this recently released version of a book I spent many hours with as I prepared for the CMT exams. After reading all 832 pages, I realized that in many ways, the financial markets, and technical analysis, are finally maturing to the point where we can fully grasp the significance of what was first written almost sixty years ago. With a focus on pragmatic portfolio theory, editor Charles Bassetti significantly contributes to the technical analysis body of knowledge especially related to tactics, and has created a book worth a space on every technician's bookshelf.

In this edition, Bassetti delivers much more than an update - it's actually a new book. He focuses on strategies for increasing profits:

* The basics of traditional chart analysis are clearly presented, just as Robert Edwards meant for them to be. In keeping with the practice of earlier editions, Bassetti retains the original charts showing examples of patterns from the 1940s and earlier. He also includes more than two dozen new charts, demonstrating that the same old patterns still work today. The detailed discussion of the market psychology that forms these patterns may stimulate modern analysts to program the patterns.
* Adds a comprehensive explanation of Magee's "basing points" procedure for setting initial and trailing stops on any position. Bassetti adds a chapter and charts to clarify this powerful concept, which in itself is worth more than the cost of the book.
* For what may be the first time, Bassetti provides an annotated chart of the Dow, combining an in-depth discussion of Dow Theory with a visual history of the signals. We've all seen tables showing the sell signal in Oct 1929 or the buy signal in late-1990 which lasted more than seven years, but the chart erases any doubt that Dow Theory is a valuable timing tool. Creating a comprehensive source on the Dow Theory, he also includes an overview of Robert Colby's method to automate the signals.
* Provides a link to www.edwards-magee.com, which offers downloadable material that supplements the text. As one example, readers can download pdf files of the Dow Theory signals for closer examination.
* Offers new perspectives on short-term and futures trading. The extensive new material on commodity trading, including a complete trading plan, was not addressed in previous editions.

Bassetti also ensures the reader understands the similarities between Magee's Sensitivity Index and Modern Portfolio Theory's Beta; and the striking resemblance of Magee's Composite Leverage to the financial engineering concept of Value at Risk. Readers of previous editions may not have realized that Magee developed these concepts decades before Nobel Prize-winning work was undertaken in these areas. Magee wrote in the language of the trader (semi-log charts), rather than the academician and his ideas have been overlooked by economic theorists.

A classic book is one that stands the test of time. No one can argue that Technical Analysis of Stock Trends fails in this regard. Patterns that worked a hundred years ago are still found in financial markets and they still work. The forecasting ability of patterns lies in their ability to document the history of human nature, which remains unchanged over many centuries.

Another feature of classic works is a unique style. Edwards and Magee filled their work with examples - current at the time of publication. They wrote with clarity and ease of style not usually found in textbooks. Their text was a practical "how to" manual that explained the "study of the action of the market itself" in concrete terms. It appealed to those seeking the Holy Grail on Wall Street, and to those serious students of the markets seeking an edge. In this new edition, Bassetti retains all of their style and introduces his own, which in all ways is similar to the original, but with a modern edge.

Bassetti believes that Magee's concept of basing points is worth a great deal of additional study. This is one of the most significant contributions he makes to the new edition, updating this section in the tactics to ensure that all traders understand this method of stop placement. His example is clear, and the reader can instantly implement this technique, which Bassetti thinks of as one of the most valuable in the book.

Some question whether classical chart reading is still a valid discipline in an era defined by cheap data, powerful scanning and backtesting software, instantaneous execution and quantitative analysis. After reading this book, you'll be left with a deeper appreciation of the value of chart reading and will become an even stronger proponent of technical analysis in modern markets.

5 out of 5 stars Get T/A info from the source!.......2007-04-13

I believe this is one of the original books to have been published on stock market technical analysis. Magee and Edwards do an excellent job explaining Dow Theory and stock chart analysis. I bought the 5th edition because it was the last edition that was actually edited by the original authors. This book is the source of most modern technical analysis theory. It covers reversal patterns, gaps, support and resistance, consolidation patterns, trendlines and channels (by Edwards); and then goes into stock selection, stop orders, how to build a chart, and the practical application of those patterns and how to use them in your trading (by Magee). I read the book from cover to cover and refer back to it all the time in my technical analysis. It's an excellent resource!

5 out of 5 stars Technical Analysis of Stock Trends.......2007-03-27

Informative and a very good resource tool when I need it. Easy to read narration which is a feature when the content can be a little dull at times.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Dow Theory Explanation.......2007-03-25

Robert Edwards description and analysis of the Dow Theory is, as Professor Bassetti so astutely states on page 48, a "magisterial presentation". I am proud to have been asked to add my interpretation to the update since Dr. Edwards death. Believe it or not, the Dow Theory is alive and well in the 21st Century and this book will help you understand why.
