A Practical & Easy to Read Guide.......2002-04-05
For all women who have any doubts on how to succeed in the workplace and find satisfaction and feelings of accomplishment in their career and jobs. Full of wonderful practical strategies and exercises in easy to follow and read formats.
Also for any woman who needs to rethink and/or recommit to a chosen career pathway.
There Really Are Ways to Work Smart.......2002-03-16
The Successful Woman's Guide to Working Smart demonstrates over and over the types of challenges and opportunities a working woman or, for that matter man, meets in ordinary business life. Caitlin Williams uses examples from real people that acknowledge time pressures and conflicting priorities. Her questions for reflection are simple, yet profound, and can bring to light personal obstacles that are holding us back.
This book is deceptively easy to read and can be read in small bites. Yet, each page has some nugget of wisdom that can be put to use. Ms. Williams takes into consideration that many women were not raised to advocate for themselves. She teaches us how to overcome shyness about promoting ourselves and gives practical suggestions for taking actions that aren't aggressive, but help us feel more participative in our workplaces.
Some of the strengths Ms. Williams writes about are already developed in many women. In this book, we can learn how to build on those strengths even more and feel and act more confident in the future. Probably the quality I like best about this book is it's premise that women are good professional people that don't need to be 'fixed.' I especially recommend this book for women beginning their worklife, whether young or after another life stage. It can give you a good jump start.
Definitely Worth Sharing.......2002-02-09
Caitlin Williams provides inspiration and practical tips for succeeding in an evolving work world. Equipped with real-life stories, the "Successful Woman's Guide to Working Smart," sheds light upon the challenges that women face on a daily basis in the workplace. The personal assessments create a workshop feel, while helping you to recognize your strengths and identify areas that need work. This book is essential in today's world where women are constantly striving to achieve a sense of balance without making sacrifices within their careers.
Invaluable reading for any woman.......2001-12-14
In Successful Woman's Guide To Working Smart: 10 Strengths That Matter Most, Caitlin Williams draws upon contemporary research, keen insights into current workplace realities, as well as the professional and personal spheres of the modern woman's life to establish that while women already have what is necessary to succeed in today's business climate, their are challenges and opportunities that demand new skills and a new mindset. Williams presents four principle themes: Inner Resilience (core strengths enabling a woman to perceive herself as confident, self-reliant, and capable of shaping her life in the way she deserves); Career Enhancement (career-building strengths enabling a woman to increase skills and a sense of competence, explore a full range of emerging opportunities, and flourish in professional life); Quality Of Life (nurturing strengths enabling a woman to take better care of herself and thrive in all aspects of her life); and The Big Picture (capstone strengths enabling a woman to contribute significantly to a corporate bottom line and position herself for leadership opportunities and future success). Successful Woman's Guide To Working Smart is invaluable reading for any woman contemplating entering the work force, as well as those women already on the job and seeking to maximize both their opportunities, achievements, and satisfactions in the workplace.
A Must for all women.......2001-11-18
This book about working smart is an inspiring book from start to finish. Wherever you are in your career, you will find this book empowering. This book causes you exam where you are in life and where you are headed. The suggestions and strategies are not only thought provoking, but life changing. The exercises will cause you to look inside yourself and draw from one's inner strength. The use of personal accounts makes the book more genuine. This book is a necessity for all women.

The essay is the one part of the college application that allows an admissions committee to get a glimpse not only of what you are (grades, scores, club member), but of who you are. "Applicants are constantly advised to 'put their best foot forward,'" says Fred Hargadon, the dean of admissions at Princeton University and a contributor to this book. "But I must confess that I always liked the ones who put both feet forward." That doesn't mean that your essay needs to shock. It means you must put everything you've got into it. It means that "if you think the college might receive even one other essay like yours," according to Brooks School college counselor William K. Poirot, "rewrite it."
The bulk of this book, as its title promises, comprises 100 examples of successful college-application essays. There are those who believe that reading essays will make you a better essay writer and those who don't. But reading these essays--and the experts' comments on them--will help you figure out what you want to write and how best to write it. From the essays included here, one surmises that the narrower your focus, the more effective the essay, as long as your narrowness doesn't cross over into insignificance. What matters most is not what you write about (these essays take on late-night TV game shows, self-induced baldness, the picture on a bag of Goldfish crackers, a family drive on the New Jersey Turnpike, and even a seven-inch plastic Godzilla), but what you do with your subject matter. --Jane Steinberg

Very good.......2004-11-26
The essays are seperated into topics (eg. Applying to College, work experience, coming to america), and each include good essays.
The book includes essays of the admittants to top tier colleges (Ivies), and some second tier ones. Interestingly, there are no essays from MIT! (No surprise though, considering the rivalry betwene MIT and Harvard -- the book was organized by Harvard newspaper)
Overall, great book.
BUY THIS BOOK!.......2004-04-27
Before I bought this book I thought my essay was pretty good until I bought this book. Then I knew that I could make my essay even better just by just following the essays in the book. I didn't even think I needed to get a guide book for my essay because I thought it was pretty good already without help from an essay book. But apparently this book worked really good because I did not get deferred from college! I got into my first choice just by using this book and I recommend it to anyone even to those who do not think they need a guide book for their essays because they think their essays are already pretty good like I thought mine was.
BUY THIS BOOK!
uninventive and most unhelpful.......2004-02-10
There are a few gems here, but for the most part, these essays are the same well-written but dry, uninventive slop every other high school senior dribbles out: how the abroad student haf a Life Changing Experience! how an athlete Crossed the Finish Line! how when pet Fluffly croaked it was a Formative Experience! If you really want insight into how to write a well-crafted, unique essay, with sounds suggestions, seek out the great book by Harry Bauld.
Varied College Essays.......2001-03-28
I purchased 3 College Essay books (100 Successful College Application Essays, 50 Successful Harvard Application Essays, and Essays That Worked), and have the following comments... I believe that the Harvard book has the best suggestions on how to write an essay, along with the best commentary/critique. However, the essays are a bit too polished. I think for 90% of prospective college students, their essays would be more like those in and patterned like those in Essays That Worked. For varied ideas on essays, the 100 Successful book gives some good ideas, but I believe many of the essays to be subpar. I did each book to have some interesting general reading, especially if one likes "short stories"... or if one is interested in 17 & 18 year olds, and what goes thru their minds.
Reality.......2000-06-03
This book has lots of college essays that could be used for reference when writing an college essay. However, it's too concentrated on Ivy League schools and not other competitive schools. The comments that are suppose to be reviewed by college counselors and admissions officers are poor. Most of them just explains that they are creative. It does not comment much on how the author should redo or learn from their mistakes and do this thing. Not as informative as they claim to be.

Best Book For Trainers.......2005-10-04
This book is wonderful, especially if you plan to get your CTT+ certification. I am reading it now for the second time. Too many other books on this subject cite rules and techniques without explanation. This book gives you the rules AND clear, actionable methods to follow them to achieve results in the classroom.
Good Prep for CTT exam, but you still need much more.......2002-10-09
This is a very useful book to help prepare for the CTT exam; and considering the fact that it isn't that expensive - I recommend it. However, be aware that it is only a helpful tool and not anywhere close to a complete or comprehensive study guide - although, as far as I know, this is the best thing available. That is because there is almost nothing else available. You can go out to the Comptia site and through them get official materials - however, these materials are EXTREMELY VAGUE & EXTREMELY SUBJECTIVE. In my mind, they really aren't worth getting; and I've had both the Competencies Booklet and their nearly useless Videotape.
This book weighs in at close to 400 pages, but it is a really quick read - even for a slow-poke reader like me. And the 2 authors break the book down to analyze the competencies in real human terms, as opposed to the vague generalities that fill the official booklet. They also provide lots of very helpful & useful observations that will help you as an instructor - even if they don't relate directly to the exam.
There are 2 shortfalls with this book however.
ONE, they have quite a number of practice questions in the book. But these will not prepare you in the least, for the real CTT written exam. Their questions are quite good; but way too straight-forward. The CTT exam is the most insane, subjective exam I've ever seen; and as a bootcamp instructor for nearly 3 years; I've taken close to 100 certification exams from about 8 different vendors. Their questions are a good start, but you need to go out to google and search on "CTT practice". I found 2 practice exams when I took this... Both of these practice question sets were wild & flakey; but they got me in the right frame of mind for the insanity that is the: "CTT written exam" - it was much crazier. And without seeing those practice questions, I would not have even scored 25%, let alone pass. There is a certain type of wrong /insane answer that you need to learn how to recognize in order to pass that test.
THE SECOND SHORTFALL WITH THIS BOOK IS THAT IT SAYS NOTHING TO HELP YOU WITH THE VIDEOTAPE YOU MUST SUBMIT AS THE 2ND STEP TOWARDS THE CTT Certification. It does reprint the CTT handbook that was current when the book was published, and that does contain references to the videotape you must prepare - but it is again, extremely vague. The official videotape that you can get through COMPtia, is likewise, extremely vague, and in my opinion
nearly worthless.

Effective Preparation for Certified Technical Trainer Exam.......2001-08-09
Major computer hardware and software vendors such as Microsoft, Oracle, Sun, Cisco Systems, Adobe, Novell, and others demand competency in their instructors. Acceptable proof of competency is a Certified Technical Trainer (CTT) certification.
It's a multiple choice test, and as a holder of 2 Engineering degrees from the University of Illinois, extensive experience in Project Management, and being a Certified Toastmaster, I thought "How hard could this be?"
Frankly, its the toughest test I ever took. Whoever wrote it, was diabolical. And, I had prepared and prepared well. An essential --but not the only-- preparation was thoroughly reading this book and working ALL of the exercises twice.
The book is well organized, well written, includes good exercises, and clear instructions on how to apply for and take both the computer portion of the test, and the video tape submission. However, do not expect to pass the test after reading this book alone. Seek out practice exams, talk to others who have taken the test, and of course, actual class room experience should be part of your preparation.
I would have appreciated citations to additional preparation resources such as practice tests, and websites.
Book Description
W. W. Norton & Company is pleased to announce the Fifth Edition of Successful Writing by Maxine Hairston and Michael Keene. This new rhetoric builds on the strengths of earlier editions, offering students clear and useful suggestions for strengthening their writing and showing them how they can develop a piece of effective writing through a process that is manageable and reliable.
In the twenty years since the first edition of Successful Writing, the elements of good writing have not changed. But the kinds of writing college students now do and the ways they deliver their writing have changed a great deal. Students today still write essays and research papers, but they also create Web sites, give oral presentations (and thus write and design PowerPoint slides), produce brochures, and of course write a lot of email. The new edition of Successful Writing offers students the kind of sensible, real-world advice they need for these and many other writing situations.

Ghost Instructor.......2000-11-01
As a community college instructor, I am able to help my students only one evening a week. Maxine Hairston, on the other hand, helps them as many evenings as they want, and she is available on weekends, on demand, for as long as they keep the book. When she talks with them, she reassures them that writing is not impossible, that they have great things to say, and that following some clear steps will make life much easier. She counsels them on how to get started, how to make their writing both clear and coherent, and how to end. Without Ms. Hairston, our writing lives would be much less satisfying. I highly recommend her assistance.

Every year thousands of graduate students face the daunting–sometimes terrifying– challenge of writing a thesis or dissertation. But most of them have received little or no instruction on doing it well. This book shows them how in ways no other book does. It combines the practical guidance and theoretical understanding students need to complete their theses or dissertations with maximum insight and minimum stress. This book offers useful strategies for each phase of the process, from choosing advisors and identifying topics through writing, revision, and review. Coverage includes

Recommended read before you start your thesis or dissertation work..........2007-02-03
Never having gone the route of graduate school, I've never had to contemplate writing a thesis or dissertation. But it's always sounded like a monumental task to me. In Irene L. Clark's book Writing the Successful Thesis and Dissertation: Entering the Conversation, she covers the steps and mindset necessary to successfully complete the chore. It's still a lot of work, but at least she puts a framework around it that makes it do-able.
Contents:
Getting Started; So What? Discovering Possibilities; The Proposal as an Argument: A Genre Approach to the Proposal; Mapping Texts: The Reading/Writing Connection; Writing and Revising; Writing the Literature Review; Using Visual Materials; The Advisor and These/Dissertation Committee; Working with Grammar and Style; Practical Considerations; Index
I appreciated Clark's analogy of a thesis or dissertation. Imagine you're in a large room of academics who are talking about a subject. You hang around and spend time listening to all their points of view. Once you've understood and heard all they have to say, you then add your voice to the conversation... your viewpoint or slant on the issue. Your thesis is your conversation. All the books and papers written on the subject are the conversations of others. Your contribution is akin to entering the conversation. When put that way, the concept doesn't seem quite as daunting as it did before. Once you have that mental image in place, she takes you through the entire process; from coming up with an idea to the act of writing, through the process of review and acceptance by the committee. When you finish the book, the effort facing you is still the same. But the monster now has discrete parts instead of just sitting there as a massive blob that's intimidating.
I would strongly recommend that anyone looking at the thesis/dissertation route take the time to read this book early in the process. You're still going to work like you've never done before, but your chances of success (or at least survival) should go up significantly.
