A Practical & Easy to Read Guide.......2002-04-05
For all women who have any doubts on how to succeed in the workplace and find satisfaction and feelings of accomplishment in their career and jobs. Full of wonderful practical strategies and exercises in easy to follow and read formats.
Also for any woman who needs to rethink and/or recommit to a chosen career pathway.
There Really Are Ways to Work Smart.......2002-03-16
The Successful Woman's Guide to Working Smart demonstrates over and over the types of challenges and opportunities a working woman or, for that matter man, meets in ordinary business life. Caitlin Williams uses examples from real people that acknowledge time pressures and conflicting priorities. Her questions for reflection are simple, yet profound, and can bring to light personal obstacles that are holding us back.
This book is deceptively easy to read and can be read in small bites. Yet, each page has some nugget of wisdom that can be put to use. Ms. Williams takes into consideration that many women were not raised to advocate for themselves. She teaches us how to overcome shyness about promoting ourselves and gives practical suggestions for taking actions that aren't aggressive, but help us feel more participative in our workplaces.
Some of the strengths Ms. Williams writes about are already developed in many women. In this book, we can learn how to build on those strengths even more and feel and act more confident in the future. Probably the quality I like best about this book is it's premise that women are good professional people that don't need to be 'fixed.' I especially recommend this book for women beginning their worklife, whether young or after another life stage. It can give you a good jump start.
Definitely Worth Sharing.......2002-02-09
Caitlin Williams provides inspiration and practical tips for succeeding in an evolving work world. Equipped with real-life stories, the "Successful Woman's Guide to Working Smart," sheds light upon the challenges that women face on a daily basis in the workplace. The personal assessments create a workshop feel, while helping you to recognize your strengths and identify areas that need work. This book is essential in today's world where women are constantly striving to achieve a sense of balance without making sacrifices within their careers.
Invaluable reading for any woman.......2001-12-14
In Successful Woman's Guide To Working Smart: 10 Strengths That Matter Most, Caitlin Williams draws upon contemporary research, keen insights into current workplace realities, as well as the professional and personal spheres of the modern woman's life to establish that while women already have what is necessary to succeed in today's business climate, their are challenges and opportunities that demand new skills and a new mindset. Williams presents four principle themes: Inner Resilience (core strengths enabling a woman to perceive herself as confident, self-reliant, and capable of shaping her life in the way she deserves); Career Enhancement (career-building strengths enabling a woman to increase skills and a sense of competence, explore a full range of emerging opportunities, and flourish in professional life); Quality Of Life (nurturing strengths enabling a woman to take better care of herself and thrive in all aspects of her life); and The Big Picture (capstone strengths enabling a woman to contribute significantly to a corporate bottom line and position herself for leadership opportunities and future success). Successful Woman's Guide To Working Smart is invaluable reading for any woman contemplating entering the work force, as well as those women already on the job and seeking to maximize both their opportunities, achievements, and satisfactions in the workplace.

Book Description
At a time when so many lament the decline of writing skills among Americans, They Say/I Say teaches the core moves of effective argumentative writing. Suggesting that there are certain moves that experienced writers use instinctively, and that the moves can be learned, this book offers a number of imaginative templates for doing so. Praised for "demystifying the tricks of the writer's trade," They Say/I Say grows from Gerald Graff's award-winning Clueless in Academe.

If you are new to grad school or writing; this is a good book for you. If you have been in grad school for a while, then it is a waste of time.
Become A Credible Writer.......2007-09-13
This book is valuable for writers who are not yet experienced with writing extensive research papers or entering ongoing debates that demand a summarization of previous arguments. Though much of this book is filled with writing templates which may or may not help writers of nonfiction, they are a good starting point to open up discussions on important issues. Learn how to summarize what someone else has said, or how to give an unbiased overview of past arguments. I'd say this book is essential for high school level writers, or even young college students, but not for creative writers whatsoever.
nifty book.......2007-08-25
This nifty little book is a great tool for teaching composition to students who struggle with writing. The explanations and sentence templates clarify the structure of academic argument essays, and give students a foothold in writing. The compact size is a plus. I've recommended it to other teachers in my "Teaching Writing to Students with Learning Disabilities/ADHD" courses and workshops.
Great for Graduate Level Work.......2007-08-09
After struggling a whole semester in my graduate program on my writing, I obtained a copy of this book and realized that I did not fully understand the academic writing. I didn't know that academic writing was about persuasive writing.
Since reading the book, my writing, my thinking and even how I articulate my thoughts have improved exponentially. Not only have I suggested it to my colleagues, who also love it, I will be recommending it to new graduate students. It's an indispensible resource that I plan to read again and use as a constant resource for writing my dissertation.
This will change my teaching.......2007-07-06
This engaging book will help me to help my students improve their writing. I enjoyed reading it and am looking forward to trying it out in the fall.

outstanding read!.......2007-06-06
I can't say enough good things about this book!! The information is presented in an easy to read manner that works for both parent and child. It focuses on topics that matter, which are sometimes hard to talk about with your kid. If you have a daughter in this early teen age bracket, you need this book!
Laura-
Too much information for an 11 year old girl..........2007-02-02
I purchased this book for my daughter who is 11 and will be 12 soon. I decided it would be best to read through the book before reading it with her and I'm glad that I did. I live in a suburban community and try to protect my children from learning too much too soon. I don't believe that 9-12 year old children need to know the details about anal sex, oral sex, masturbation, and the many other topics included in this book. This book would be best for a high school age girl. Far too much information for a pre-teen to absorb or fully understand.
Terrific book--from a teen psychologist and author!.......2006-03-27
It can be really tough to find a balance between providing great information and doing so in a voice that really reaches girls. This book succeeds beautifully!! Girls will love the fun, easy way important topics are addressed and moms will appreciate the nitty-gritty details!
A must have resource for any adolescent girl.......2005-11-29
As a obstetrican/gynecologist AND parent of one teen daughter and one preteen daughter, I have to say that this is a MUST have for any adolescent girl in today's society. I applaud these authors for tackling this often avoided topic. This is the most infomative and "teen-friendly" source available. It is written in such a way that it speaks to girls in a language they can understand and appreciate. While there are other resources that address similar issues, this is the only book that speaks to today's teens about tough issues that were uncommon in my generation. Whether we as parent's like it or not, our kids are exposed to more than we could ever imagine and at younger and younger ages.
This is a great book to read with your daughter (as we have with ours) and a great opportunity to open dialogues in your home. I highly recommend this to all my adolescent patients and their parents.
Book Description
Anyone who dares to teach creatively needs this book. It is a delight and a treasure for creative teaching.
- Herbert Kohl, author of The Discipline of Hope
Nonstandardized Quests reminds us of the wonder and danger that drive all good writing. Even [the] title reminds us that writing is a "quest," one that usually begins with a question, to discover. I cant wait to smuggle David LeCounts ideas into my classroom; theres food for all kinds of minds in this book.
- Jim Burke, author of The English Teachers Companion
Over the last thirty years, English teacher David LeCount has seen the frustration of teachersfrustration with the erosion of choice that they have had in creating their own curriculum, and frustration that students have had little choice in topics for writing. Now, he offers a way to turn that frustration into liberation and inspiration with this collection of quirky, provocative writing prompts designed to release students from standardized writing assignments and encourage student research, reflection, and exploration.
David knows kids and he knows writing. He sees creative and expository writing for English, and other subjects, as multidisciplinary opportunities for self-expression. Thus, his prompts unify diverse fields of knowledge and offer new meaning to them. They also encourage word play, inspire both teachers and students to enjoy their own choices, and discourage the fruitless search for "the right answer" or the drudgery of working for grades at the expense of discovering meaning and experiencing true delight. Think of the results if you should ask your students to write the following:
- an encyclopedia entry that describes the fall of the Alamo from the Mexican point of view
- a transcript of your testimony as a witness of a serious crime
- a short history of aviation from a pelican's point of view.
Much more than a list of topics, Nonstandardized Quests also includes student writing samples woven throughout the prompts. These student responses make the book read like a narrative, a portrait of adolescence in which students find their own voices. It is this kind of "writing to discover" that allows students to free their imaginations and grow as writers too. Use the prompts and discoveror rediscoverthe thrill of writing, just for the fun of it.
Customer Reviews:
What a delight........2007-05-30
It saddens me to remember the days when I considered creative writing prompts dread-inducing. The infamous "What I Did On My Summer Vacation" resurfaced year after year in school, and I felt resigned to a life of dreary, meaningless questions and answers. Imagine my shock when, on the very first page of David LeCount's Nonstandardized Quests: 500+ Writing Prompts That Matter, I found: "Simply Write: A written transcript of at least five 911 phone calls that depict an ongoing instance of spousal abuse" and "Simply Write: A letter to the parent who was not given custody after your parents were divorced". I was stunned; not only are these two prompts strikingly original, they are intriguing in another sense. LeCount addresses tough issues head-on, and causes readers to tackle ideas and positions that are often overlooked. For example, I don't think I had ever considered the mental state of a 911 operator after receiving multiple phone calls from a victim of spousal abuse. Throughout this collection, I was surprised at my deep reactions to these intense ideas; I can only imagine the emotional responses this prompt would have inspired in my high school English class.
While many of the other prompts are just as serious (and sometimes heartwrenching), many serve the purpose of inspiring vivid description: "Where on Earth is your favorite natural wonder? A waterfall, a mountain, a sand dune? Describe it to a friend who has never seen it before" and "What is the most beautiful thing in your life? Why are you attached so much to it?" are exceptional examples. I found that I especially enjoyed the prompts relating to nature, and considering LeCount's background in poetry (especially haiku), I'm not surprised. He has a way of inspiring appreciation for the little-considered ideas or phenomena in our everyday lives, a quality I have yet to discover in any other author. This brilliance is supported by the varied examples of student work interspersed with the prompts, which seems the truest testament to his ability to inspire creative work in students (and others) of all ages. Rather than teaching his students to produce answers, this author teaches students to really think.
This is the second book by David LeCount that I've read, and I've noticed a striking difference between his prompts and those you might find elsewhere. Other prompts sound like they were written by an instructor; LeCount's sound like they were written by a writer. He essentially revives imagination and the wonder of words, fundamentals nearly killed off by generations of ho-hum ideas masquerading as creative writing prompts. Ultimately, I could not be more pleased with this companion to Dream Writing Assignments. LeCount's mastery of the English language is obvious in his lovable collection of emotional, serious, whimsical, and delightful prompts - all original, and all wonderful.
Immediately Usable!!!.......2005-04-17
This book is wonderful and I cannot say enough about the great ideas. I began using the book in my classroom the same day I received it and now my colleagues want it all the time. The writing prompts are creative and range from fun to emotional. I like to put a few choices up each day so that all students can show their individuality. This is a must have for encouraging students to love writing.
For aspiring writers looking to flex their creative muscles.......2002-11-14
Nonstandardized Quests: 500+ Writing Prompts That Matter by highschool English teacher David E. LeCount is an invaluable aide for creative writing teachers. Nonstandardized Quests is packed cover to cover with ideas for unusual writing assignments meant to get young people to think and put effort into expressing themselves. Each topic (such as "a guidebook for horses on how to get along with flies") has a corresponding website for research, and samples of student writings intersperse the abundant ideas. Nonstandardized Quests is also useful and highly recommended for aspiring writers looking to flex their creative muscles via self-administered mini-projects.
Imagination and Facts.......2002-11-03
This book offers a wonderful assortment of multi-disciplinary writing ideas for the new teacher and the veteran. I found myself saying over and over I wish I had this book when I was a young teacher. With websites at the end, a slight inconvenience, and with remarkable and disturbing student samples, the book provides an alternative to the essay "What I did over my summer vacation."
Many topics are daring but more in line with the students I have in class, and more in touch with their world. The belief that students have untapped imaginations is to say the least refreshing!
Book Description
"The Strunk & White of academic writing."Richard Bullock, Wright State University
As employers, politicians, parents, and other citizens lament the decline of writing skills among Americans, this little book comes to the rescue. An instant bestseller when it first appeared as a college textbook, They Say/I Say gives writers precisely what they need to know in the all-important domain of persuasive writing. Cutting through the clutter of educational diagnoses and nostrums, it goes right to the heart of what writers most need to do, and that is to listen to what others are saying (they say), summarize it, and then offer their own argument (I say) as a response. Offering user-friendly templates to help writers make these key moves in their own writing, They Say/I Say is already being called the Strunk & White of persuasive writing.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic !!.......2007-05-11
I bought this book many years ago when it first came out and absolutely loved it. About once a year or so, I go back and re-read it to get my head on straight about the subject of simplification (pull myself back from slipping into the complicated). Not everything in the book is for everyone (including me), but it really makes you think.
About 15 years ago, we bought a larger house than we absolutely needed and proceeded to throw things into the basement storage area, kitchen cabinets, etc. because "we had the room" and "we might need this some day". After living that way for years, we developed quite a pile of unused stuff and it began feeling very over-whelming. It has taken us several years to eliminate most of the clutter and to begin to let go of stuff we don't need but felt guilty about getting rid of. It is an on-going journey and this book really helps! One thing comes into the house, one thing must go back out.
Many people think of simplification as moving to a cabin in the woods, but the reality for many of us is that we need to simplify in place. Look at your existing situation and make incremental improvements. Over time, they really add up and I feel much, much freer than when we started this program. The simple wardrobe has significantly cut down the amount of time I spend shopping (and has saved hundreds of dollars), the suggestion for don't answer the phone just because it's ringing has saved us many a meal-time (or just quiet time), keep your plants outdoors was obvious once I read it and wonderful in practice.
There are also some very "deep" steps such as cleaning up relationships that are no longer working for you which are enormously helpful. I have spent the past couple of years making sure that friendships I develop are healthy and fulfilling and cleaning up some old relationships where I just got sucked into relationships with needy, toxic folks. That alone saved hours of time and a great deal of stress and strain.
I just can't say enough about this book as well as her other publications. The whole approach is simple and logical .... just start somewhere and get going. You will find yourself in a store thinking about purchases before you make them and only bringing things into your home and life that truly add value.
What an absolutely fabulous book for a beginning simplifier or someone who needs a refresher on a different philosophy of life.
A Real Eye-Opener.......2007-04-18
I can't agree with some who have condemned this book. While some of her ideas did not apply, that doesn't mean that the book is no good. I lived in a large city when I first read this book, and after I was done, I immediately sold the extra auto and threw out any junky breakfast food that was hanging around. My next trip to Goodwill was much more generous as well. To me, Mrs. St. James gave us all a real wake-up call as far as how we're living and to think about what we really need and what we don't. Now that I live in the country and have entered into a vocation that requires a car, I can't do a couple of the things I used to, but I still continuously take stock of my stuff and try to keep things pared down, and don't allow myself to get committed to things I know I don't want to do.
Some good advice, but for what demographic group?.......2007-04-15
First, I really did find some good suggestions in this book as far as how to make my life simpler and free up some of my time. From that standpoint, it was worth the money. However, some comments in the book left me wondering what planet she lives on. For example, the advice that once you start simplifying your life, you will no longer need the cook, the chauffeur, the gardener, the fashion consultant, etc. I mean....she's kidding, right?
A "gem"? Only if that "gem" is made out of faceted crap........2006-12-20
I read this book when it initially came out, and it fascinated me. In fact, I read it many times, figuring that I had SURELY missed the significance I heard so many people going on and on and on about. Well, I am sorry to say that the only significance here lies in giving yourself permission to be selfish and adopt a worldview that is totally egocentric.
Let me give a few examples. St. James suggests that you not open the door to a visitor if you don't want to. She suggests you avoid social situations you don't want to attend. She also suggests you avoid the holiday celebrations if you don't like them. Perhaps she is forgetting that we GROW through doing things we don't want to do--expecially if we are able to touch the lives of those around us in the process. I think that is what disturbs me most of all about the book: most of the suggestions would leave the people who followed them alone, poor, in a tiny, bare apartment with no friends. There comes a point where another visit to the library and evading yet another person at the door lose their luster.
Personal growth often happens when we push ourselves to do things we don't want to do. Sometimes we do things for the wants and needs of OTHERS, not ourselves. Going to a holiday gathering gives me the privilege of honoring my parents. If I took the book's advice, none of this would happen. That, to me, is tragic. I am NOT the center of the universe, and neither are you. To believe otherwise isn't simple: it's silly.
To be fair, some of the suggestions do have some practical benefit. For example, I stopped trying to match socks to outfits (since I'm a man and my socks are infrequently seen) and switched to the same black socks. She is right; that does make washing and wearing socks easier. I also like her suggestion about reducing clutter. However, the story about an Olympic medal winning athlete wanting to get her Olympic medals out of her house was just bizarre. If I had an Olympic metal, I can PROMISE you that it would remain in my house, and I wouldn't consider it "clutter." Sheesh.
I can't imagine some of the more "hardcore" suggestions, like buying and wearing seven pairs of the identical outfit to reduce the difficult task of choosing which clothes to wear. Trust me, it doesn't sound any less silly when you read it in the book.
If Ms. St. James helped usher in a "self-help" movement, then I applaud her. Her book did make me think, and it did give me a few strategies to make life simpler. It also helped me assess my moral values and realize that OTHERS are far more important than ME. Simplicity comes from focusing on the needs of others instead of the needs of self. Only then can life be really simple, because all the "stuff" that complicates our lives ceases to be important. That, my friends, is TRUE simplicity.
to the naysayers:lighten up!.......2006-11-08
I found this book to be profound. It got me questioning a lot of my spending habits, my lifestyle, and what is really important to me. This book has been an inspiration to me. She wrote this book to help people. Maybe the reviewers who are unnecessarily negative about this book should keep that in mind.
