ASIN: 0871206749 |
Book Description
In 1980, Bruce Joyce and Beverly Showers predicted that staff development would become a human resource development system designed to change the nature of education, the status of school personnel, and the relationship between the two. In this third edition of their popular book, Student Achievement Through Staff Development, the authors offer an expanded guide to making that prediction a reality.
Through case studies of successful programs, evidence from research, and illustrations from their extensive experience, Joyce and Showers help educators design programs that measurably improve student achievement. They fill the gaps in staff development programs by answering vexing questions from both teachers and administrators:
* How can we develop the skill to implement new curricular and instructional knowledge?
* How can we embed the study of student learning into staff development?
* How can we adapt learning environments to meet individual needs?
The focus of the book is on the potential for both personal and organizational growth inherent in staff development programs. School renewal ultimately depends on the individual development of all its members. Joyce and Showers lead the way to creating a community in which organizers, providers, teachers, administrators, and students learn and grow together to achieve the goal of lasting student achievement.

Book Description
"Marcia brings the same enthusiasm she has for working with adults to writing for adults. This is a book all trainers could benefit from, study, and keep accessible in their tool chest."
Stephanie Hirsh, Deputy Executive Director
National Staff Development Council
Actively engage teachers, rekindle their passion for teaching, and take advantage of the ways the brain learns best!
Research and experience prove that students learn better when teachers use brain-based strategies. The same is true with adult learners. However, the very strategies that are recommended for teachers to use in instructing students are seldom reflected in staff development workshops.
"Sit and Get" Won’t Grow Dendrites draws on the latest research in brain-based learning, differentiated instruction, multiple intelligences, and adult learning to provide strategies that not only motivate adult learners but also increase understanding and long-term retention. Author Marcia Tate defines each strategy, explains its theoretical framework in easy-to-understand language, provides multiple professional learning activities that staff developers can incorporate immediately, and includes a guided reflection and application section.
Designed for easy implementation, this practical handbook includes:
- An overview of adult learning theory
- More than 150 professional learning activities
- Several sample professional learning designs
- Opportunities to reflect on and apply the presented strategies
Supported by both learning-style theory and brain research, Tate’s strategies enable all staff development professionals to plan and deliver powerful, memorable presentations that improve teaching practices and increase academic achievement.
This indispensable staff development resource is suitable for anyone who teaches adults, including staff developers, trainers, principals, teacher leaders, and educational consultants.
Customer Reviews:
Brain-compatible and Adaptable.......2007-09-18
Adult learning theory is handily referenced in this neat little book, and it's those references that are just as valuable as the advice Tate offers for the newer professional staff developer (or anyone who teaches adults). The interested reader can follow the research to explore the subjects more thoroughly.
The theoretical framework pages are useful support for Tate's activities. Though some of the material and suggestions are a bit simplistic for the adult audience("...participants work together to create a song that shows what they have learned."), the majority of ideas can be easily altered to suit any level of inquiry required. It's a quick read, which is also helpful to time-strapped professional developers, and it explores the newest brain-compatible strategies as it inspires creative adaptation. I would recommend this resource as part of a working library, especially for newer staff developers.
"Sit and Get" Won't Grow Dendrites.......2007-08-30
Just like her other books, Dr. Marcia Tate takes her brain-compatible strategies and applies them to the adult learner. Often times adults are no more than big children and her techniques help to utilize instructional strategies to 'teach' the adult learner. Her ideas are great for professionals who provide professional development for the adult learner.
Marcia Tate practices what she preaches!.......2005-10-08
The reason I bought this book, and all her others, is because I was lucky enough to be in her 2-day seminar. She DOES practice what she preaches! In her book, she uses 20 research-based, brain-compatible strategies to motivate and engage learners, enabling them to reach higher test scores. During her seminar, she used these same 20 strategies with us and they worked! We actively listened and learned, because she didn't expect us to "sit and get". We were moving, talking, playing games, writing, drawing, etc...using those 20 brain-friendly strategies. I am now using these 20 strategies in my classroom. My math class all tested 100% on their first unit tests! I will use Marcia Tates books and strategies forever!

Customer Reviews:
This book is an easy way to learn speedwriting!.......1999-11-19
I needed to be able to take dictation at 80 wpm, in a very short amount of time, to pass an exam to keep my job. Never having taken a shorthand course & not being able to find a place to learn shorthand, I came across this book. I was amazed at how easy it was - this book takes you step by step through the process of learning the rules of speedwriting, as well as giving you practice sessions to build up your speed. It's a skill that you can use for more than taking dictation - just for writing yourself quick notes. Simple and Effective!.......2007-07-31
This is a MUST HAVE for presenters/trainers. An easy read packed with simple, powerful and effective training techniques. After years of presenting and training, I've finally found the basic "instuction manual" I've been looking for. Fundamental tips, presented in a way that is simple to grasp and just as easy to apply. Now that I've read this, I'm revising all my training materials. Not only are my presentations more effective and engaging for participants as a result of reading this, but they are much more interesting as a presenter.
COMPACT AND COMPREHENSIVE.......2003-08-19
In this short book, Dr. Joye Norris uses her long experience in adult education to show us a clear route towards learning. Reading this book is like taking a course with her! In an accessible and readable format, Dr. Norris shows teachers and designers of adult learning sessions not only how to, but also why this approach works.
I recommend this book to adult educators, to academics who teach adult education and to designers of training in any field. It will give you a sense of the arduous journey we who are concerned about learning, need to take to move from telling to teaching.

This book is a survival guide for teachers with the "first year jitters." This book gets straight to the point of what works for new teachers, and in a clear, engaging voice, explains how to do it. The book offers numerous methods for instruction not specific to any one subject or content area. The realities of the modern classroom are reflected in this "must have" guide. Customer Reviews:
Nuts and Bolts.......2006-03-21
Anyone who is either thinking about teaching a vocational course
or hiring someone to teach a vocational course, who does not have a teaching credential should buy this book. It's a little pricy, but it sure beats spending a semester in college for Part 1 of a teacher credentialing program.
It's basically everything in the Designated Subjects Teacher Credential course in one volume. Subjects like classrom decorum, lecture & lab techniques and student evaluation are thouroughly discussed. Normally teachers in vocational programs did not take college courses to prepare themselves to teach, they worked as carpenters or cosmetologists most of their life. This book takes them into the next step in a very productive career.

Raising The Bar On Managing An Organization's Talent.......2004-06-30
Having managed the MBA recruiting and development programs in dynamic, global business environments, I could have benefited greatly from the practical advice and guidelines offered in The Executive MBA- An Insiders Guide. This book provides a great overview of both the employee and employer perspectives and offers valuable guidelines for organizations' to address a myriad of important issues: From linking the graduate business education initiatives to the organizations mission, to selecting program participants, formulating appraisal and financial sponsorship arrangements, to addressing post program issues- the author addresses it all.
This book is a great resource for any organization seeking to develop and retain outstanding managers. Senior leadership can gain insight into setting up and managing EMBA programs and the talented professionals who are attracted to these programs. The author's logical, focused, and strategic approach to create a managed program that can maximize results by synergizing graduate education and organizational mission is clearly outlined.
Managing and retaining the most talented managers in a dynamic, global business environment is quite a challenge. Out of necessity, my approach was to recruit and develop smart, assertive and adaptable self starting MBA's who had a bias for action and could blend into diverse global business environments. In this mode, with senior leadership geographically spread throughout the world, I encouraged local management to autonomously direct talented MBA professionals as they moved through various divisions or companies: this approach can be effective if an upwardly mobile professional can self-navigate. While this approach can generate a natural setting for talent to flourish, it can also generate a chaotic state where talent can be underutilized or even suppressed. The perspectives and guidelines offered in this book can help an organization alleviate or avoid the downside risks and related failures in human resources development that can occur in dynamic, global organizations. Small, emerging firms that are nimble should also consider adopting the sponsorship ideas offered by this book...
My experience in managing and observing numerous approaches to managing graduate education programs has convinced me that most programs are " home grown" and could improve their effectiveness as measured by employee satisfaction and organizational achievement. Senior executive and human resources leadership could benefit greatly from the perspectives offered by this book. As the US economy continues to compete on a global basis for management talent, I believe the competition will stiffen and the bar will be raised thus requiring winning organizations to create thoughtful and globally integrated approaches to developing and retaining their future leadership; and this future leadership can effectively be developed from within the ranks of the talented and aspiring cadre of MBA credentialed professionals.
This book opened a world of options.......2004-06-09
I am an IT manager currently employed but seeking career alternatives, because growth opportunities are limited with my background. My position is considered middle managment, yet I can't leave my job to expand my horizons. I had no idea EMBA programs even existed. This book gave me a whole new perspective on working and learning. It opened a door to a potential future with a plethora of helpful and practical ideas, including funding, an important concern. In addition, I see EMBA programs can be highly flexible, yet challenging and versatile, with an abundance of opportunities that fit my interests. I loved the comments from those who went through EMBA programs, and really appreciated the wide range of people who attend these programs. The book is clear, concise, well written and reflects an enormous amount of research.
Recommended for Anyone Considering an MBA, Especially Women!.......2004-06-09
I work for an inner-city bank and as a working mother my options in getting ahead are limited in my company. Certainly an MBA can help and the executive MBA route seems viable. I don't see myself CEO of the bank, I am not that type, but the delivery of the education and types of projects plus accommodating work and family seems appealing. After reading this book, "executive" is just the name of the style of the delivery of the education and most who attend the EMBA are simply aspiring professionals looking to get ahead like me with around 10 years or more work experience. The section for working mothers was excellent and the sample schedule and testimony from actual women was great. I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in getting an MBA. Helpful and practical advice.
A Great Gift for my Stupid Boss.......2004-06-09
Great tips on getting financing and negotiating with my employer. Now if I can only get it through my boss's head how important it is to continue with professional education and get the company to back me up. THis book is an unbaised look at this very interesting form of business school education. Well worth the investment. I think I'll leave it on his desk.
Informative and helpful information about the Executive MBA.......2004-06-09
The book illustrates important issues about working full time and getting an MBA. I am not in a position to drop out of the workforce to go back to school full time. I would prefer to continue working, besides, I am also a single parent. The executive MBA may serve my purposes and the book provides valuable and practical issues to consider.
