Book Description

Previous editions of this book have helped over 100,000 students and professionals write effective proposals for dissertations and grants. Covering all aspects of the proposal process, from the most basic questions about form and style to the task of seeking funding, Proposals That Work offers clear advice backed up with excellent examples. In the new edition, the authors have integrated a discussion of the effects of new technologies and the Internet on the proposal process with URLs listed where appropriate. In addition, there is a new chapter on funding for student research and a completely written chapter on qualitative research. As always, the authors have included a number of specimen proposals, two that are completely new to this edition, to help shed light on the important issues surrounding the writing of proposals.

Clear, straightforward, and reader-friendly, Proposals That Work is a must-own for anyone considering writing a proposal for a thesis, a dissertation, or a grant.

5 out of 5 stars The Only Proposal Guide You Need.......2002-12-30

As any graduate student will tell you acceptance onto a Ph.D program is largely based on submitting a successful proposal. Thereafter, as long as the researcher adheres to the proposal, graduation is virtually guaranteed. I am a Ph.D student who used the book to construct my proposal, which was summarily accepted by the research committee with minor changes. This appears to be contrary to what many Ph.D hopefuls experience. The book is expensive however I would highly recommend it. The proposal hurdle is well worth overcoming professionally.

3 out of 5 stars 50 Writing Lessons that Work.......2007-05-07

This is good for students who need focus, but not for students who need basic skills.

3 out of 5 stars Too short, and better books exist.......2007-02-19

I was disappointed to discover this book is more like 50 activities, not 50 lessons. I realized only after I ordered this book that it is a slim 64 pages. Each "lesson" is like an idea for a student writing assignment, although many of them are not particularly inspired. I tried to use this book with middle school students, but many of them complained that the assignments were cliche and forced them to write on prompts they had heard before (like write an autobiography, describe someone's personality in a paragraph, write about something that annoys you, write about the weather today, etc.). I felt that half of these prompts were things that as a teacher, I could easily come up with on my own. The other half are fine and good, but brief. For my purposes, this book could be condensed to a two-page list of creative writing / essay topics.

At 9.99 for 64 pages, you are better off spending 19.99 on a 300 page book that will last beyond a few weeks, and do more than list off writing prompts.

This book could be useful if you are teaching 4th-5th grade students, and like to have the structure of a book to guide you through getting the class excited about a single writing prompt. If you're a more creative type (and not a by-the-line, I read a cookbook for every detail type), you're better off giving yourself an hour to brainstorm a bunch of writing prompts, typing them up, and using your own ideas.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book For Motivating Non-Writers!!.......2006-11-28

I have my own tutoring service I have used this book to help my students who do not like writing. The prompts located in the book are great ways for children to use their imagination and be creative in many different ways and capacities. I would suggest this book for any teacher or parent who is trying to finds ways to help that struggling student to enjoy writing.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2006-11-06

This is a generally good book. I like that it spends a little more time on some of the concepts that are generally difficult for students.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource!.......2005-11-26

Great resource for lessons, sponge activities, and substitute lessons. Highly recommend for all teachers who want useful support for their writng program.

5 out of 5 stars Writing That Works .......2007-10-10

This book is a great reference for doing exactly what the title says," Communicating effectively on the job". We used it as our main text for a business writing class I took and I would never sell this book back after the fact. It's an easy read, clearly explained, and there are several examples as well as a corresponding website. It's the first thing I reach for when I need to write any business correspondence. Good buy.

This book was a great reference for me when I wanted to write a business proposal, memorandums, and a rhetorical analysis. Great grammar tools in the back as well and easy to follow.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and easy to read.......2007-10-21

I am findng this book to be outstanding. It is not only informing me, but it is also helping me provide data, examples, and "rules" for use in meetings with colleagues who may wish to add content to the corporate website that is not web-frineldy.

A great first choice for any new web content writer!

3 out of 5 stars Just O.K........2007-01-26

I read this book immediately after reading Krug's "Don't Make Me Think," which is fantastic. In comparison, "Hot Text..." was mediocre. Krug's book--although presenting a bigger picture of the world of websites--truly synthesizes the nuts and bolts for writing for the web. "Hot Text" had a lot of what I felt was extraneous information and text (ironic, because really, what writing for the web is about is brevity and conciseness).

If you haven't read Krug's book, "Hot Text" will be a good starting point for you. It contains a lot of information, it also contains some good resources.

I also have to say that I agree with an earlier reviewer--the photographs (which look like poor black & white photocopies) are strange. Example: Chapter 8, Idea 4: Build Chunky Paragraphs! The photograph shows a middle-aged man holding a small bowl or cup up to his mouth. He's looking off-camera; his right hand is by his mouth but I'm not sure why. Maybe he's eating some chunky soup? But what does soup have to do with paragraphs? It's a small detail, these photographs, but they detract from the overall professionalism of the book for me.

1 out of 5 stars not what I expected.......2006-08-13

I haven't picked it up in a while. When it first arrived I was disappointed, it didn't have the pertinent info I was looking for. It's not anywhere nearby to refer to it. Basically, the "hot text" isn't really there. The outline was dull. The photos were kind of sad. I didn't like the presentation and the content didn't seem to live up to whatever the review was in the Amazon blurb.

5 out of 5 stars Everything You Need under One Roof.......2006-07-28

This manual for online writing has it all--and more.

1. Detailed instruction for every conceivable page of Web site content.

2. Super tips and insight on PR content and dealing with editors and publishers.

3. The history of HTML (very cool!)

4. All sorts of useful style tips.

5. How to write your resume.

6. How to get a job.

7. Hundreds of online resources.

The writing (needless to say?)is clear, concise, and conversational. Had the book been written in 2006 instead of 2002, I'm sure the authors would have thrown in much more about blogs. Other than that, the material seems to be up to date.

This book is worth every penny!

5 out of 5 stars How To Write for the Digital Media.......2004-04-25

An excellent book that points out the differences between digital media and paper media. I especially learned a lot in Chapter 3 - What Will the Web Do to My Text? But there is much throughout the entire book. You'll learn about writing in general and writing for the web in particular. And from the web you'll go to email, ezines, enewsletters, weblogs and the gamut. If you're going to write for the web you need this book.

Book Description

A practical, innovative step-by-step approach to the writing process from one of the most acclaimed writing coaches in the country

In A Writer’s Coach, Jack Hart–a managing editor at The Oregonian–shares the wisdom with which he has coached reporters to Pulitzer Prize—winning success. He gives invaluable advice on gathering ideas, writing theme statements and outlines, and using the “ladder of abstraction” to add variety and texture to writing. He provides a lexicon of lead sentences. He shares his ideas for composing and sustaining powerful writing, and for ensuring that what you write will be accessible to your audience. Discussing the ways writers can trip themselves up–procrastination, writer’s block, and excessive polishing, to name just a few–Hart demonstrates how to overcome each obstacle. Excerpts from writers such as Ernest Hemingway and Joan Didion, and from articles gathered from magazines and newspapers, provide inspiration and instructive examples of both inadequate and exemplary writing.

Like a personal, portable writing coach, A Writer’s Coach will be a boon to writers, editors, teachers, and students.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars For the Writer Ready to Move to the Next Level.......2007-09-26

Books on writing often reiterate the same advice we learn over time, the reader sometimes lucks out in using a tidbit or two. Realistically, no one has time to study the advice and put it to practice. Thus, it's not a bad thing for a book on writing to cover the things we've read before. The more we read about it, the more it stinks in.

But you can't read A Writer's Coach in the same way you read any other writing book. This one goes deeper meaning a reader may absorb the information better by reading one chapter at a time to understand and practice the concepts. Coaching an athlete to improve at something doesn't happen overnight. Thus, this book targets the serious writer who needs to move beyond the basic books on writing in order to take writing to the next level.

I try to avoid writing general reviews that tell the reader nothing, but Hart is a master in explaining the concepts of method, process, structure, and everything else he covers. It's difficult to capture them into a little review when I try to avoid long reviews.

Business and life coaching grows more popular because they're effective in helping people change behavior and improve. In thinking about coaches, I reflected on my childhood years when I played sports. The best coaches point out the right way to swing a bat, serve a volleyball, or shoot a basket. They also help players review their weaker moves so they can fix their form rather than let them continue using bad form, which will hurt them in the end. "Coach" is a fitting word in the title because Hart takes the coaching approach in showing the writer the right form for taking an idea from start to finish.

The book speaks more to journalists and non-fiction writers. However, much advice works across all writing genres -- so those who thrive on telling stories can glean a few valuable lessons from Hart. Expect to find high quality content that you find in the best college textbooks -- except subtract the stiff and convoluted writing. Hart's writing style makes the reading easy. A Writer's Coach contains smart, clear and logical guidance that will take a writer's writing skills to the next level.

5 out of 5 stars A new "writer's friend".......2007-08-29

A Writer's Coach: The Complete Guide to Writing Strategies That Work is a practical and comprehensive writer's companion for beginners, professionals and anyone in between.

Whether you write non-fiction or fiction, Hart offers examples of strategies and techniques for eliminating procrastination, breaking through writer's block, establishing and narrowing focus, and developing a voice-all vital components in any writer's toolkit. Also included are sections on the rhythm of words, and the mechanics of writing.

Hart, a former professor at the University of Oregon, and editor at large at The Oregonian, explains his method in a clear and concise manner easy to comprehend. Mastering the art of language is a process achieved by understanding and utilizing key strategies to expand your skills as a writer.

After reading A Writer's Coach, I have a better grasp on how to assemble my thoughts into a cohesive and focused structure, and convey them for better reader clarity.

Armchair Interviews says: A must-have book for writers at any level!

5 out of 5 stars So Useful!.......2007-03-29

I found Hart's book to be incredibly useful. As a professional editor and writer, it was refreshing to read a text on writing that was so well written. I also bought it for my father who is writing a book.

It reminds me of a good college text book, but with real-world examples and stories.

A key text for anyone considering writing a book, or for anyone who wants to improve their writing in general.

5 out of 5 stars Invest in this one!.......2007-03-24

Of all the writing guides out there, this one stands out for its balance between passion, precision and technique. You'll find some real gems tucked nonchalantly into the most unassuming paragraphs. Most helpful are the check-lists at the end of every chapter.
As a novelist, I gleaned a lot of wisdom and encouragement from this book. If you want to build a library of master teaching, add to this Stephen King's On Writing, and Donald Maass' Writing the Break Out Novel. These three are spot on.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Top Notch.......2007-02-28

Hart not only knows more than most of us will ever know about writing, he knows who else has written a helpful book. "A Writer's Coach" is full of useful and insightful information. Anyone who has to do any writing, whether for work or just letters to relatives, should read this book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Simple as a resume should be .......2007-09-16

This is the one to get. Trust me, I write resumes for a living.

4 out of 5 stars Great Insights but not Quite Enough by Itself.......2007-07-30

I enjoyed the author's common sense approach to the resume miracles often promised by other books and resume services. Functional resumes do hide a lack of experience but employers already know that. Tricks with format and fonts might look neat but most resume reviewers are going to look past the presentation at some point. This book focuses on the basics, words that work, emphasizing accomplishments over position, keeping things simple, clear, concise and easy to read. But once you get past the large list of action words, there really isn't much more to this book. Personally, I like the formatting ideas in books like Resume Magic and the emphasis on using keywords which are often how resumes are filtered in the Internet age. While the author of The Elements of Resume Style seems to belittle these stupid resume tricks, they do seem to work.

Still,in spite of this quibble I'm giving this book a good recommendation because I found the information on grammer, fonts, style and basic format very helpful, as well as the grain of skeptism that comes with it. But comparing the sample resumes presented in this books and the ones found in other like Resume Magic, and putting oneself in the place of an employer, I think the visual formatting and style does make a difference. This book is a good start or even a complement but not the last word on resumes.

4 out of 5 stars "Elements of Resume Style: Essential Rules and...".......2007-03-12

This is an easy read. The descriptions are concise. The author explains the reason for his suggestions. There are numerous examples for form and format. The one thing I found missing was how to set up a resume for those who have worked for one company for over 30 years but have had several jobs and titles within that time frame.

5 out of 5 stars This Book is Essential to Getting Hired!!!!!!!.......2006-04-25

Mr. Bennett leaves no stone unturned here...he takes readers through each step of writing a resume so diligently that I feel as if he has practically re-written my resume himself! Throughout the book he reinforces the importance of being honest about work histories and teaches readers how to position job hopping and gaps in employment. (Now I can feel confident in selling myself despite the many detours I've taken in my career!) He puts readers in the point of view of the employer and goes into great detail about how to use language and visual layout of the resume to make the most impact. He supplies tons of descriptive words and shows how to turn terms like, "strong interpersonal skills" and "great team-player" into actionable statements with evidence that actually mean something to employers. (This was very enlightening to me!) He also explains best practices with cover letters, inquiry letters and replying to salary history requests...you NAME it and this book's got it. Mr. Bennett clearly has a lot to teach on the subject and I feeled armed with a powerful weapon in being able to re-position myself on paper and get myself hired. This book is a must buy!

5 out of 5 stars This one is a Keeper!.......2006-03-14

I have recommended this book to people of all ages and disciplines. It has more pertinent information then any other resume book I've ever seen. It actually was entertaining to read, and provided realistic, hopeful solutions to people in recovery who struggle with how to handle gaps in employment.
I hope that it is used in schools because it is a great tool!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars good to start with.........2006-11-09

Good book to get you started on your essay, but the sample essays are not by the avg med school applicants

3 out of 5 stars Useful but not completely.......2006-06-29

This book has a lot of good advice but all the sample essays are from people who got accepted to Harvard Medical School. I know most of us haven't volunteered in a 3rd world country or published research papers or saved someone's life, so it would have been nice to read some essays from a non-superhero applicant. Also a little variety as to what schools they were accepted to would have been nice. They were all Harvard and other Ivy League schools. It also sounds like the authors consider those to be the "top schools" but they may or may not be depending on whether you're talking about research or primary care. Bottom line: needs more variety of example essays. But overall it was a pretty useful guide.

4 out of 5 stars A good place to start........2006-03-22

Basically, this book tells you to write about yourself. It shows some good ways to transition into the varying aspects of the essay. But, the best thing about it is that it features a background summary of each applicant. It's easy to find the ones that are most similar to you. But again, it only helps for ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Just write a thoughtful and sincere essay!.......2004-01-01

The best lesson from this book is actually the step-by-step process described in the beginning. The essays are just there for you to get an idea of how unique you can get. By following their process and getting the most of what I have learned from my own life experiences, I ended up with a great essay - something that I am proud of submitting. How did I do it? Just read and completed all of their practical exercises. Otherwise, some of the essays are inspiring and they give you some ideas that may be relevant to your application. Don't listen to the post about this book being all for Ivies. I came from a state school and I still ended up interviewing at the very top schools. What gets past the admissions is your true character and sincere expression of why you want to be a doctor.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting essays with some useful pointers.......2001-05-26

I found this book not as useful as it claims to be. The essays feature here are usually too unique to be used as "model essays". Most of these candiates are best of the best students with tons of great experiences or personal accounts. I still enjoy reading through many of these essays and the pointers the book provides. However DO NOT expect to use these essays as model for your personal statements. This is not what this book is for.

Product Description

The Whens, Whys and Hows of Expressing Terms of Endearment It has been said, Words can bewitch the soul. Effectively used in the modern love letter, words can work to the advantage of all those who seek ever lasting happiness. Love letters have power: the power to sustain good relationships and move them forward, the power to improve failing ones and make them better even the power to save those in serious trouble. In How to Write a Love Letter That Works, the authors express their belief that a return to what worked in the past is not old-fashioned as long as it is updated to account for modern times and trends. The fifty chapters, each of them devoted to a different situation in which a love letter can and should be used, is divided into four sections: His Feelings, His Letter, Her Feelings, and Her Letter. The feelings sections gives the reader insight into their own motivations and allows them to examine the problem from the other person s point of view. Each of the letters, beautifully and effectively crafted, offers readers the opportunity to borrow selectively ideas or language, filter them through the prism of their own personalities, and create their own love letters that work. Selected chapters: When Friendship Turns to Love Letter to an old flame: Do you remember when...? We re going to slow We re going to fast Goodbye for now Ending an affair The three-dimensional love letter ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Sidney Berstein has enjoyed a distinguished career as a lawyer, legal author, and popular lecturer. Formerly, he was president of Kluwer Law Book Publishers, Inc. He is past-president of the American Society of Writers on Legal Subjects and is an elected member of the American Law Institute. Mr. Bernstein lives in Nyack-on-Hudson, New York, and is very much in love. Linda Tarleton is a professional writer and artist. Over a twenty year period, her books and articles have spanned the fields of biography, medicine, political history, and poetry. Ms. Tarleton is herself as poet and she has published two New York-based poetry journals. She has three children and lives in Port Washington, New York.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!.......1999-10-26

I love this book! sometimes through the ART of writing love letters can relationships really prosper and move on to another level. After reading this book and apply some of the techniques you learn, you'll soon realize that your relationship with that special someone will soar at an unstoppable rate! it's fantastic..cuz it worked for me

5 out of 5 stars This is a very good book!.......1999-07-17

I had tried for close to two years to convince Sandy to marry me. We had a great time together, but she had lingering doubts. One of my college roommates, who was well aware of my situtation (since it was all I talked about) bought me this book -- I think as a joke. It was no joke. I read the whole book in a weekend, and much of it twice. I did not copy any of the well-written letters, but it helped me to express MY OWN feelings in a way I could not otherwise have done. The letter I wrote -- which I titled "I want to spend the rest of my life making you happy" worked. Last month, Sandy and I were married in St. Barts. This book deserves a lot of the credit for our happiness. It may not have the same profound effect on you that it did on Sandy and me, but I assure you that this wonderful book will help you to express the world's most important emotion -- true love!

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST THING WRITTEN ON TRUE LOVE AND HOW TO EXPRESS IT.......1999-04-06

This is the book for those of us who want to express our love, but are not always sure how to do so. The love letter is a lost art. We tend to be too self-conscious to express our true feelings in writing. We would rather communicate orally or by email or voice mail -- just so our thoughts and feelings will not be recorded in a permanent way. But this is unfortunate, because those who we love deserve the great joy of receiving a written expression of our feelings -- one that will truly make an impression and will survive even when we are gone. This wonderful book may bring back the lost art of the love letter. It provides real world advice for many situations, and sample letters. It will open up your mind, help you identify your feelings, and give you ideas of how to express them articulately and meaningfully. Another great thing about this book is that it is not limited to the love between spouses, significant others, etc. -- it addresses all kinds of love. You can write a love letter to a child, a parent, a teacher, a friend, someone you would like to get to know better (or even someone you would like to break-up with tactfully). These letters are not often written, but they should be! Why not express your feelings -- especially if, with a little help from the authors, you can do so eloquently. The advice is simple and easy to follow, and the sample letters are beautifully written. And because the authors are a male-female team, people of either gender will find ideas they can relate to. This is one of the relatively few books that could truly change your life (and the lives of the recipients of your letters!). One reader's advice: buy a copy (before next Valentine's Day!)

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book!!.......1999-01-01

Aside from being poorly written, this book had very little information that really would be helpful. The authors seemed to think by stating the obvious, they were somehow instructing the reader in the art of writing love letters. Most people already know what they want to say; the problem lies in how to form their thoughts and ideas into a coherent and romantic letter. This book is offers no real help in this area.

Aside from the above problems, the final reason which made me return this book, is that the authors tried to instruct the reader on how to write a letter to someone you'd like to have an affair with. I found this not only evidence of poor judgement on their part, but quite repugnant.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A couple of points ... .......2004-07-22

First, just to clarify, this is a book for people who own a small business and want to start an e-newsletter (written & edited by themselves) about it; it's not a book for people looking for information on getting into the business of producing e-newsletters.
Second, I found some of the advice ... well, here's an example:
In a chapter titled "What do I do if I can't write?" the author says "The most effective e-newsletters are those that sound as if the company leader is just talking, filled with all the slang, run on sentences and joking around that comes out in person."
That just doesn't sound right. It would have been nice to see an example from a highly successful e-newsletter in this style, but the author doesn't provide any examples to support this assertion(or any of the other dubious-sounding bits of advice in the book).

5 out of 5 stars A Must Buy -.......2004-01-20

Michael Katz is a repository of hands-on real-world knowledge about newsletters. His 141-page text was a quick and informative read, and serves as a handy reference. This excellent book is worth every cent if you're interested in writing newsletters.

5 out of 5 stars must-read A-to-Z resource for e-newsletter publishers.......2003-11-11

This is a valuable A-to-Z resource for e-newsletter publishers. I was a partner in a successful e-mail marketing firm for several years; access to Michael's book during that time would have saved me countless headaches and missed opportunities.

Readers new to e-newsletters will find this book a terrific "how-to" guide. Michael's humorous, down-to-earth style is engaging and entertaining, as he demystifies the process of launching an e-newsletter.

Experienced readers will find Michael's book a great checklist and reference for both new and on-going e-newsletter programs.

It's a quick read, but an essential one if you're serious about succeeding with e-newsletters today.

5 out of 5 stars What a Tiny Book! Is That All There Is To It?.......2003-07-15

It's the smallest book I had seen on anything related to the Internet and I had a whole lot of BIG problems with my e-newsletter that I needed solved.

I finished reading it in an hour or so.

Type a few extra words here, click a few buttons there, start a better (read simple and profitable) business relationship over here, and BINGO! Big problems are all gone, bye-bye.

Yes, the book is funny; Michael Katz is a very witty guy.
Yes, the book is easy to understand; the author has laid the whole thing out in a "FAQ" format and has obviously had it proof-read by a smart 8-year old to make sure he has communicated all his points as clearly as possible.
And Yes, Yes, Yes, the book is not obsolete within 3 minutes of publication; the typical fate of anything related to the Internet. The material deals with Internet publishing on a level that makes it virtually timeless.

I wish every business book I purchased made as much sense, solved as many of my business problems as quickly, and made me WANT to write a review that glows in the dark!

BUY THIS BOOK! It's worth your money.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific!.......2003-05-22

Just what we needed to get started. I didn't even know where to begin, and this book moved us through it. What i liked most is Michael's emphasis on relationship and content in being successful and breaking from the pack. A clear, funny and useful book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read!.......2007-09-04

This book is truely packed with valuable information! A "Must Read" for all you "multi hat" type small business owners!

1 out of 5 stars Careful--He has people in his coaching firm write the reviews.......2007-07-22

I saw this book on business coaching advertised in Entrepreneur magazine next to a large advertisement for Action Coaching--a franchise. Is it not strange that the names of each reviewer can be "googled" and most, if not all, are members of "Action Coaching." Evidently no one outside of his "firm" found the book worth reviewing. This smacks of unethical behavior--your subordinates and friends writing superlative remarks about your work.

His books may be worthwhile...but I won't pad his pockets.

5 out of 5 stars Quit Running Ads that Don't Work!.......2007-06-18

There's a big difference between an ad that sells your products and services and one that simply drains your bank account. This book shows you how to effectively use your hard-earned dollars to generate the maximum impact for your business. Brad Sugars discusses 149 different strategies to help you pinpoint your ad budget for greatest results. I particulary like the marketing campaign analysis which helps me objectively decide which ads to run and how much to spend. The book covers direct mail, print, radio, TV, and internet mediums and helps me to determine which is best suited to my business. I enthusiastically recommend it to any owner or decision-maker who spends money to advertise their business!

5 out of 5 stars Instant Advertising.......2006-06-30

A must read for anybody who wants the maximum benefit from his advertising budget. It is simple to read, gets straight to the point and unlike most business books addresses the practical ways of getting things done. I can never look at ads the same way again after reading this book. What is amazing is that after the reading this book, I applied the concepts in the book to look at my clients ads. I have a new client thanks to the knowledge I gained from this book. Worth your money 10 times over!!!

The Author Bradley J Sugars takes you right back to the basic principles of writing a successful ad. Instant Advertising shows business owners how to avoid these common pitfalls and how to design ads that will increase sales and visibility.

No business owners should advertise without reading Instant Advertising first...
